I love to play a game when I can really get into the playstyle I want. I don’t even mind grinding a bit for gear that supports/enhances how I want to play.
The trouble with GW2 is that there is no gear anywhere in PvE that provides the stats I’m looking for. There’s plenty in PvP. Why was this decision made? It’s stupid. Why rehash the same basic six stat combinations with tons of different looks in crafting, karma vendors, dungeons, and WvW? More stat combos support people trying out new builds and new chars. Why was PvE shafted in this regard?
I don’t even want to spend the time or money getting an exotic set if it’s not something I want to play in.
Can we please get more stat combinations in PvE?
What would be your ideal stat combination?
I currently kill most people easily (minus really good thieves) on my ranger. With this update I am hoping it will make my life even easier!
I use snow leopard in WvW and I wouldn’t really take anything else atm. I have used it countless times to escape a situation where I couldn’t win (usually an enemy zerg came out of nowhere). I have also used it to catch up to and kill a running enemy I probably wouldn’t have caught up to otherwise.
<3 snow leopard
I like it, definitely sounds Norny to me, moreso than my Ranger.
Arya Ivorywolf – Formerly: Arya Tennfjord, but she took the name of her clan as her own, as its last surviving member.
I like the first name a lot. The surname is kind of a mouthful for me. But i love wolves
Mine is: Estel Wolfheart
I am excited for Jormag. Jormag is one of the bigger dragons so I am eager to see what that one looks like.
I personally think the Zhaitan fight was as lackluster as it was due to time constraints. Now that the game is released, I think the next dragon fights will be a lot more memorable.
I would love to see greatsword/melee combat items get some reworking
Traits need some reworking too…
some is a understatement. none of the ranger trait lines are properly organized. But yes I completely agree with making GS usable.
What about GS isn’t usable? I use longbow/greatsword on my somewhat tanky ranger and it is AMAZING.
GS has such great utility. If they change anything on that weapon I will be mad. Unless they make things better then sure why not.
I don’t play a mesmer (yet), but I excitedly have one stowed away so I can use portal in WvW. I think it is such a cool skill. MAYBE they can have a limit on # of people that can go through. I think that would be a fair enough change.
Yes. I would love for F2 to work WHEN I say it should work. Many a times I have been frustrated because my pet will run towards target to use F2 when I wanted the skill to activate by me.
Chesire’s point are solid. I use my longbow for defense and my greatsword for most of my damage.
All I can say is, when I am using the treb in Khylo and an enemy comes, it is really fun to knock them off the side and they have to run all the way back up for me just to do it again.
Forgot to address the greatsword- it’s prbably my favorite melee weapon in the game. It’s got a perfect mix of offense, mobility, and defense. 4 is one of the best blocks in the game, doing both decent damage and an interrupt, and 3 is one of the best gap closers with very long range and short cooldown. GS’s one downside is no burst, but combined with the control the weapon brings it makes a very good attrition-type, wear the other guy down kind of weapon.
Both types of swords combine extremely well with traps- if you’re in melee range anyway, dropping them at your feet will always set off the trap. You can get a lot of extra damage or utility that way.
Yea after a weekend of WvW and sPvP with my tanky build using greatsword/longbow I am loving it. I’m in love with the utility of both those weapons and will not drop them!
It is an interesting concept. It is really annoying fighting a thief, but isn’t that the point of a thief? Being all stealthy n stuff.
I think a 30 pt major trait would be a good way to go. That way not all rangers have this ability. But only those who spec for it.
This is my current and almost final build. Im going for a daggers theme, so daggers on coat, daggers on shoulders and soon to get daggers on boots from Whisper’s Boots with a gold/black theme.
What bow is that?
I would never give up my pets. Despite the current clunkiness of them, they are so useful. I would die for my pet! And my pet would do the same for me XD
Largos would be a cool playable race, but I’d pick kodan over them. I NEVER play bestial races in mmo’s, but I would play a kodan for sure. They just look SO COOL.
I do wish the patch notes included everything. i never knew they changed the female norn’s greatsword running animation. It is a good change! If it was said in patch notes, I would have admired it sooner in game.
Here is my build as of now.

Any idea what a good sigil to put on my greatsword would be? I’m a fan of chill so I like hydromancy.
I run 0/0/30/25/15, and wear Power/Toughness/Vitality Gear, with Knights Accessories.
The Greatsword has a couple of things that Sword/Dagger doesn’t have.:
-massive amounts of evade while in quickness
-a huge gap closer
-a block/knockdown (or a cripple, but the knockdown is too good)
-a daze/stunWhile the Greatsword may not be for you, here’s a link to my guide. Specifically, you may find some of my stat discussion interesting as a melee Ranger, even if you decide to stick with Sword/Dagger.
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/66729-how-to-be-a-great-greatsword-ranger/
Coll I’ll check it out. As of now I am longbow/Greatsword and liking it!
I did some sPvP last night with a modified version of the build Tracker posted and it seemed to work pretty well. I blame any shortcomings on me not being used to greatsword or a melee weapon. I was running healing/power/toughness and I think I like that setup more than my original power/toughness/vitality.
With two forms of condition removal, conditions seemed to not really be an issue at 15k hp so I’d rather take beefy healing power and 15 pts in beastmastery so my wolves match or usually surpass me in damage.
Cool man I will try it out. Gonna debate whether or not to give up quicker pet swap for faster recharge of bow AND sword skills.
I wanna keep piercing arrows. I love knocking back multiple people with longbow. Plus i can use the long range trait in WvW then.
Thanks for the help!
Hmmm. Not sure what kind of playstyle Longbow would be good at with Greatsword or Sword/Dagger.
Problem being that if you want Longbow as main weapon, then dps is really poor. If you want Longbow just for the knockback, then you have to wait a bit with no real defense till your weapon swap is back for your defensive weapon.
Play around with it – who knows, you may come up with something different and fun that works for you.
The playstyle I’m going for is to be able to outlast someone 1v1 while I widdle down their hp. For 2v1 I dont expect to win but at least maybe down one and draw out the fight. I kind of do that now with my two bows. I do alot of pet swapping and weapon swapping. Basically I want a lot of control with cc and distancing myself from enemies.
I will definitely mess with it. originally I wanted sword/dagger but yea idk :P choices choices!
The cripple on dagger seems really nice. Maybe sword/dagger would be good with longbow and greatsword would be good with shortbow.

It also depends on what you want to accomplish with your build. If you want to be an on point presence, I think GS with it’s AoE is best.
If you just want to have an option for survivability as a backup weapon set to compliment a shortbow build, then I would recommend the sword/dagger.
i was thinking using longbow. For the knockback as well as pet swiftness.
This is all very helpful guys. I posted a link the build I have now. I really like my canine pets. So that 15 pts in beast mastery is key for me and I really do not want to lose the 5 sec faster pet swap.
Maybe I will do greatsword. And Tracker that build is interesting. I was using a soldiers amulet, but maybe 5k less hp and alot more healing power might be worth it.
Sucks though because I just finished getting Power/Toughness/Vitality exotic gear. I want this build for WvW too. Maybe I will keep those stats but add on some healing power with my accessories.

Yea forgot to say this is for PvP. I will update my first post with a build of something I am thinking. How the heck do you have 2,700 armor?
Hey guys,
I’m changing up my weapon setup. I am focused on steady damage with around 1,800 toughness and around 20k hp.
I used to use longbow/shortbow, but I think I want to swap out shortbow (or maybe even longbow though i really like the control with longbow) and replace it with one of the above weapons in the title.
Sword/dagger seems interesting to me as I really want a lot of mobility and control.
I haven’t really messed with greatsword, but love to know what benefits it can offer me.
So I’m looking for pros/cons that will benefit my playstyle of a ranger more focused on survivability rather than pure offense.

I use Power,Toughness, Vitality, and healing power in that order. I used to use lonbow/shortbow but I think I am going to try longbow/sword and dagger.
I may ditch some vitality (Im currently around 20k hp) for more crit dmg but we will see!
Just use longbow for the skills it has. Every skill besides auto-attack on the longbow is useful depending on the situation. After you have exhausted your skills on longbow, switch to your 2nd weapon set and use that.
And yea, piercing arrows and point blank shot is awesome. #4 on longbow is my fav skill. Position yourself correctly and you can knock people off so many things. Lots of control.
I heard a track from Eye of the North in Hoelbrak yesterday. I got all giddy.
I don’t think so. A work around though would be to take a screenshot of the loading screen then crop out the bottom map points.
I just feel like I’m running around fairly aimlessly killing x numbers of this and y numbers of that. Nobody talks in chat. The quests seem to peter out. I have no idea how crafting works because I have no idea how to gain a craft.
My warrior seems pretty fragile at the moment. I expect to have issues with a new game. I don’t expect to be turned off so quickly, so I’m trying to figure out what I’m missing. The manual being so complete.
It’s just a really different game. Even for a seasoned mmorpg player. If you are bored of the actual mechanics of the game though, it doesn’t really change. Which I love.
Yea I never had it happen where I wanted to do a dungeon and couldn’t find a full group.
I still see lots of people around in my server. I’m almost done getting my exotic gear and when that is done, WvW all day everyday.
Haven’t they said WvW changes are coming? I don’t think they can say much. Since they are probably doing a lot of iteration.
Of course I would love not to be left in the dark as WvW is my favorite thing to do in this game.
I mean it would definitely take time to get that many points. Especially if you never played the first GW before.
I hate knowing that dead players are able to see what is going on around them and there is nothing that can be done about them. I would love to be able to burn the dead (especially some of them [Thieves
] sending them to the map screen or back to their original spawn location.
I played a game called Rubies of Eventide where you could pick up dead players and move them which would also allow to move these spies to non critical locations.
At the end of the day, dead players shouldn’t be able to talk, see or gain any tactical advantage. There are many solutions that have already been posted, blanking the screen, forcing map view, making enemy players invisible or auto respawn timer would all be sufficient.
I just hope that it is on ANets To-Do list of things to resolve.
OMG. I want to be able to pick up corpses of defeated players and throw them off cliffs!
Freelancer has interesting points, but he’s forgetting something when he talks about orange swords. – PvDoor much? I like his ideas, but ultimately there has to be something ELSE to fix this.
That’s why the idea of making siege weapons more important is interesting to me. Especially if you make it so a zerg of players beating on doors will do nothing. I have a lot of blueprints in my inventory, but I never use them.
They will just get destroyed so quickly and like I said earlier, it is frustrating to put all this effort in setting up a defense only to get wiped out. And not wiped out by a smart group of people, but wiped out by people just because of their numbers.
or they will just stay in a zerg and sneak attack everything
5 man attack teams are actually what most people want to promote, by zerg we mean a huge group of 100 people running around capping something then moving on to the next target without any thought or strategy behind it.
Exactly! And the thing is people do this BECAUSE it is encouraged by how everything works. Using that number of people will demolish anything in its path. Siege weapons on that large of force doesn’t do anything since AOE is maxed at hitting 5 people.
Well seems everyone doesn’t like this idea. I just think SOMETHING needs to change. Right now there is no motivation to defend something you capped.
You spend all this gold and supply on upgrading a camp or a tower and all it takes is a group of 50 people to mow you down like it is nothing. it is very discouraging and doesn’t feel epic at all.
I think more emphasis needs to be placed on siege weapons then. Maybe make npc guards more useful. I’m anxious to see what changes are brought to WvW as it is my favorite part of GW2.
As discussed in this episode of Tales of Tyria at the 40:36 mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rnpqzt44Pag&list=ELuHTiNdxCjFQ&index=10&feature=plpp_video
I agree that removing the orange swords would help solve this zerg issue. The actual rewards and ease of difficulty is way in the favor of forming huge groups rather than having small ones.
As said in the show, the swords right now act as a point on the map for zergs to ping pong between. Removing them will force communication across the map as well as the need for people to split their force into defense groups.
What do you think?
OMG try “Less violence, more violets” when you’re crafting near Sylvari. Oddly enough, it makes me want to show her more violence…….
But you must never let a wrong ripen into evil!
I hear “SHAKE IT OFF!” a lot. Human male warriors say that line so cool and I’m gonna make one of those just for that reason.
Haha yea. it is kinda funny though. I really hate when my norn says “Might makes me right.” Sooo cheesy.
I will say though, Whenever I hear a male human warrior say “SHAKE IT OFF!” I think it sounds so cool. So cool in fact, I’m rolling a male human warrior just for that VO.
@Cosmos Honest suggestion, maybe play WvW on your thief? As soon as you get out of tutorial area at level 2, just play WvW to level. Nothing wrong with that.
I did that a lot on my now lvl 80 ranger. Which is why I only have 30% map completion.
Anytime you are scaled to below level 30, there is is a strong disparity in strength, but it is not because the scaling is messed up.
A character below level 10 probably does not have a full set of armor.
A character below level 20 probably does not have a full set of jewelry.
A character below level 30 does not have a full set of skills, and likely has a sub-ideal collection of skills. When you are level 80, you are a seasoned adventurer that has already overcome these shortfalls that novice adventurers have.
Oh, but exotic gear, and traits, you say? From level 39 onward the impact of traits shrinks as you level. Higher tiers of gear are needed to offset this, as level 80 blues scaled to level 20 are the same as level 20 blues. Major and Minor traits, better skill selection, and gear that is the best you can have for the level (until 80, “best” is a moving target) all add to your strength, but this is not the cause for the massive disparity seen when you take an 80 to a level 2 zone.
If you really want to scale appropriately to a level 2-5 area, take off your gloves, hat, shoulders, rings, accessories, amulet, back piece, and use only your weapon and heal skills—no utilities or elite. The scaling is right, what is wrong is the expectation that a fully geared adventurer is supposed to fight no better than a poorly-geared one.
It is that expectation because that is the philosophy behind the game. I think it needs some sort of tweaking. They did take an awesome step in the right direction. I never visited old zones before with a max lvl character in any mmo. There was never a point.
I think they are fine as is. They do not want to make it so you have to choose norn in order to be competitive.
I use snow leopard in WvW. If I don’t wait to use it, I can escape any zerg. The dash is just crazy with the speed/distance you travel. Love it. I only use it when I need to bail out.
You get it by buying chests with glory and opening them. i know you can use a pvp salvage kit on pvp armor and throw stuff in the mystic forge, but havent messed with it yet.
I think the gold chest at any rank will give what is normally the coolest looking gear. Since all gear is normalized, there is no best gear as you say.
We are a small guild composed mostly of friends and friends of friends looking to expand more. We do not want to be a massive guild where you don’t know anybody. We like to have a tight knit group.
We want to do all kinds of content as a guild, but focus a lot on WvW and hopefully tournaments.
If you are interested in joining a small/medium sized guild, reply here or message me in game!
Yea. Plus you would rob them of any potential loot because they wouldn’t be able to get a hit off.
Hey all,
This is an extreme example. I was on my lvl 80 ranger in the norn starting area just doing events and killing stuff because I haven’t been there in awhile. I noticed though I do not one shot anything, I still kill things very quickly. I’m not even an offensive build, but more balanced.
I think it would be better if my stats were reduced even further so I am doing closer to the same damage as a level appropriate low level for the zone. So I’m doing low level damage, but at least I still have my traits and elite skill.
Otherwise it is just boring and other than playing with friends, serves no purpose in revisiting old zones.
Where/how does the event work to make Temple of Melandru uncontested so I can get the armor I need?
I see “The pact are preparing to attack the Temple of Melandru” but not sure what needs to be done or if it is a series of events that needs to happen before I can help the pact.
] sending them to the map screen or back to their original spawn location.
