Yes I love piercing arrows. I use it for sPvP and WvW. I switch to eagle eye for longer range if I’m on a tower wall.
I focus on healing power/power/toughness with longbow/greatsword and do great in WvW. I can solo camps by myself and do pretty well in a 2v1 situation.
It saddeness me to write this, but inside two months you ve managed to kill the game for anyone that doesnt stick by it everyday for hours.
I ve dedicated quite a lot of time in august and september to the game, then played occasionally in october. I come back and start playing more in november, but there are barriers that are unpassable by me.
I cannot complete some dungeons – there is noone playing anything but fractals. By extension i cannot get any dungeon armor or weapons. Again by extension i cannot do monthly achievement. Which puts me at a disadvantage to a group that can making me even poorer by comparison.
I cannot participate in pvp – without tournament group all i can do is mindlessly grind glory. Which maybe i should do, because nobody will believe me that i reached rank 20+ solely through tournaments. PLaying tournies without a group is an excerise in futility. I d rather waste time watching paint dry then have 150+ points each game, only for the rest of my team to have 10,10,10 and 0. So by extension – no monthly pvp achievement.
I play a mesmer, which means i have zero or next to zero tagging capabilities – no dynamic or world events for me. At the same time, anyone being able to generate gold is getting ahead of me more and more – if not by directly generting gold, then by flipping.
So all in all, I cannot enjoy pve, cannot participate in pvp, and in general, im left out of everything. All because of silly design choices like: reward seperation between different dungeons in pve or no separation between premades and randoms in pvp.
Come to Isle of Janthir and join my guild and my small guild and I would gladly do dungeons with you!
I have noticed a big difference in rare/exotic drops. Mostly rare drops from normal mobs.
At least this is in factals. I’m sure it is across the whole game though.
To be specific. I got maybe 1-3 rare drops from normal mobs since playing the head start. this weekend I got 3-5 rare drops from normal mobs.
Ranger. As someone said above, they are deadly if you master a playstyle you like.
I can’t recall the animations in Aion, but TERA is kind of fresh in my mind and those combat animations definitely had the impact you are describing.
I for one love the animations in GW2. Not many MMO’s pay attention to transitions between animations. For example, start running forward on your character then stop and see what happens. Or change direction. There is definitely weight there.
However unlike in TERA, you can cancel and move while using a skill and are not rooted by the animation with some exceptions like swoops or leaps. I imagine it was a tradeoff on ArenaNet’s end.
ArenaNet,
I LOVE the new dungeons. I am NOT a dungeon person. I have done half of the dungeons in the game and they are all pretty cool. These fractals are on a whole new level in my opinion though.
Things I like:
1. They are generally shorter to complete
2. There is usually a unique mechanic to the dungeon (I love the snow and wisp one)
3. They are intuitive and have a nice flow
Time to gush:
I love the snow dungeon. I like the frostbite condition and needing to light fires to stay warm. I like when you wander into the forest and it is really dark. The only light is from the torches we are all holding. It was spooky and was super cool.
I love the wisp dungeon. This was the hardest one I have done with a PUG so far, but it was tons of fun figuring out what to do. We ended up ignoring all enemies and had a mesmer throw down a portal to make it a bit easier for all of us to get the wisps in place in time!
Great job to everyone involved with these new dungeons. I hope to keep seeing more fractals added!!
I LOVED the event! It was really cool with Phase 2 how we were clearing the beaches and discovering this new island as a community. My guild and I split off from the event zerg and were just exploring. It felt REALLY cool to explore this map knowing it was brand new to everybody.
The event finale was awesome too. A tad bit long, but it felt epic. The chest at the end was filled with rares/exotics for me which was a SMART move ANet. Loved it!
Maybe if you got 2 chests for 1 piece of grass… but just ‘maybe’.
That said, I’m sure Anet is making a ton of money on these things. Until they don’t, these will be around.
Or until a lawyer realizes that they are running a gambling scheme and sues them. I’m pretty sure there are laws to regulate gambling and that’s exactly what these chests are, a gamble system.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………. You are trolling right?
After playing with the skill builders from what I can tell both Warriors and Thieves make better Rangers then Rangers themselves. I’m leaning towards deleting my Ranger and rolling thief and going full P/P, SB and playing it as an archer, who wouldn’t want an invisible Archer. My only issue is Thieves range is 900 with the exception of I think 1 ranged ability, so for actual range a warrior might be the better choice. Oh decisions decisions.
Go play a thief. My wolf likes to eat them.
You have my bow Sparrow Silverstar!
Lies everyone knows your wolf can’t catch a moving target I call shinanagans
Ah, but with hunter’s shot on longbow, he can
I love my ranger too
I do a tanky/healing power heavy greatsword/longbow with dual wolves and I do great.
Good thing they added another Drake pet that has 2 abilities broken that it never uses and a condition based F2 that sucks because of long casting time + the pet itself having like 0 Condition Damage.
I use the salamander drake? I think. The one that boils the water. It casts instantly. Though that might just be on pet swap with quickness.
I still do fine. I actually made a new build and it is working amazing for me. I only have trouble taking down really good thieves at the moment it seems.

Guild Wars 2 is still very much like Guild Wars as far as gear goes.
You’re kidding right? Almost everything about Guild Wars 2 is different from Guild Wars.
Guild Wars has easily obtainable best in slot gear. Same thing applies to Guild Wars 2. Are YOU kidding?
Best in slot is legendary and you’re saying they are easy YOU are kidding. GW2 is not remotely related to GW1 or that manifesto anymore.
Best in slot is exotic. Minus the rings and back from these new ascended. You can get a max level armor piece from AC in 3 runs. That takes what, 90 minutes tops? How is that a grind.
Good post. I agree with everything. This industry can be very demanding especially at times like this with major updates. They work their butts off and put their heart and soul into this because they love it.
They could be doing any other job that pays better and is 9-5 everyday, but they don’t. Wish more people would realize that.
No, Anet have said so many things and did a 180 turn on them!
“No death penalty, Anet thinks DP isn’t fun etc”, “dyes account bound”
We now have delath penaty and dyes are not account bound, the list goes on
I’m still undecided how I feel about dyes being soulbound. I like collecting them so I don’t mind.
And we don’t really have a death penalty. Definitely not to the extent as we did in Guild Wars. Having 60% DP was pretty catastrophic.
Wow you are right! Thanks!
Thing is you are allowed to use consumables in WvW such as food and boosters. As well as racial elites (Snow Leopard is “op” for escaping or chasing down someone). I don’t see nearly the negative reaction regarding these as I see with this “new gear grind”.
Because broken skills can be fixed with rebalalancing or countered with a large enough zerg. Consumables have been there since launch, so it’s not surprising to see people use them.
Fixing the gear grind after implementation is much harder.
I NEVER reached best in slot gear for any other MMORPG I played. I play Guild Wars 2 anywhere from 5-20 hours a week. I think that shows how Guild Wars 2 is NOT a game based on gear grind.
There is no way to prove me otherwise. How else could a “casual” player have exotic gear minus accessories with only playing that amount of time since August 25th?
Ascended items change that. Lets look at the cost of one infusion shall we:
Well i just tested this recipe :
1 Eldritch Scroll
20 Mystic Coin
250 Karka Shells
100 Ancient Bones
http://i46.tinypic.com/21nffvn.jpg
Results :
Vital Infusion
Stats:
+5 Vitality
+5 Agony Resistance
“ACCOUNT BOUND”Or as someone else put it, that’s 700 skill points to infuse all your gear. Plus materials and ascended items.
They did not release all ascended items yet so it will not cost 700 skill points. If a new person comes to the game months down the road, they aren’t forced to get this gear. They have this option though if they want some kind of stat progression.
I for one am playing Guild Wars 2 because I am not forced to get this new gear. Going to do it at my own pace. All I want is that quiver back piece asap.
I will continue to be on the same competitive level with others in WvW because the game allows me to be. Everyone else can continue to complain.
I do not have full exotics on my ranger in WvW and I do JUST FINE. I can 1v1 and 2v1 very easily and win.
I have level 65 rare accessories equipped for goodness sake. Everyone is completely blowing this out of proportion.
You know, I’ve seen this argument from a few people now.
Ok, I know you think you are hot stuff. Maybe you are. But let’s say ONE day, you fight someone who IS on your level. He has gear that is 5% better, he’s got 5% more HP. He kills you, and has 4% HP left. Are you going to go “Haha, you got me, good job.” Or are you going to fume that you would have been victorious if only you had the same level of equipment?
Bottom line is, a competitive game should not be influenced by who has spent more time farming in PvE. Especially a game which has STATED THAT in its manifesto.
Thing is you are allowed to use consumables in WvW such as food and boosters. As well as racial elites (Snow Leopard is “op” for escaping or chasing down someone). I don’t see nearly the negative reaction regarding these as I see with this “new gear grind”.
I don’t claim to be hot stuff. But lets just say I am doing just fine without max stat gear on the “most broken” profession in the game.
The only grinding I did in this game was running Ascalon Catacombs about 10 times to get some armor. I did 0 grinding for karma and I have a few pieces from Orr.

“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.”
Yes or No?
If you don’t think the ascended gear sounds like a hell of a grind then I don’t even know what to say to you. What the hell.
Noone is forcing you to get this gear. If you want to go deep within this dungeon you will need this gear. If not, then you don’t.
I do not have full exotics on my ranger in WvW and I do JUST FINE. I can 1v1 and 2v1 very easily and win.

I say go to the mists at lvl 2 on both and try them out. Don’t let other people decide what you should play!
If I did that, I wouldn’t be playing my ranger whom I love.
I have a lvl 2 Ele and Necro. I personally am going to level my necro as it seems really fun and I like the death shroud mechanic.
Ele is a very complex class as attunement swapping is usually very important. it is like swapping between 4 weapon sets.
I play ranger as my main character. IF you don’t mind spending money, I’d recommend the Razer Naga mouse. I use it and it works perfectly for me.
For the pet skills I use ctrl+1,2,3,4.
http://www.gw2db.com/items?filter-filter-item-type=12&filter-item-rarity=8
That shows the new back items. Can’t wait to see what they all look like in game.
Uh I see no difference with those quotes and what the game is today. Especially the last point. Guild Wars 2 is still very much like Guild Wars as far as gear goes.
I know this because I have a very very busy life. If this game was a gear grind I would NOT be playing it. Reason being I have played all other MMORPG’s that ARE gear grinds and I stopped playing all of those.
That is the truth.
Ooh, interesting. Anyone found any info on where exactly to get it?
My guess is it could be in the new dungeon.
I hope warriors will have them too. I’m curious what will be other back pieces.
I am sure anyone can equip them. Like the backpacks right now.
From kotaku’s Q&A with Isaiah Cartwright:
“We do have some more back items this update. You will be able to find a quiver, we know we only shipped with a few back items and we do plan to add more.”
Awesome! I am definitely getting that for my ranger!!
PLEASE!
as well as these other guild options:Guild Suggestions:
-Ability to send Guild Wide Mail
-Ability to send Officer Mail
-A Chat channel for Guild officers
-a Log in or log off indication in guild chat of members
-Message of the day being auto posted in guild chat upon log in.
The message of the day notification like in GW1 would be a great feature to add.
Hey ArenaNet,
Something I noticed is that smaller (but not less important) changes are never included in patch notes. A previous update I enjoy was the animation change to norn females running with the greatsword. I love it! Why wasn’t it mentioned? I would have checked out the change sooner if I knew it existed.
In this Nov 15th update, I noticed a couple small things which I love that I wish were mentioned.
1. I noticed the character select screen is different and on the left side lists info about your selected character. It is really cool! It deserves recognition so everyone can see.
2. You now have a notification when you have coin to pick up from the trading post. AWESOME!
Why is stuff like that not listed in patch notes?
Thanks for reading!
Just one more thing before I go to bed sorely disappointed…
You said you need to focus on “things you know you can fix”
Let me give you a short list of things I KNOW you can fix. Today. Now. That would take you 10 minutes of coding and would have a massive impact. We’ll test it for you.
• Longbow/shortbow projectile speed. You don’t need to test it. You’ve got faster projectiles in game. Increase ours so our shots actually hit moving targets in PvP. The greatsword change is appreciated… but the VAST majority of Rangers love bows and want to use bows. Side stepping against a ranger in PvP negates 50% of their longbow damage. Side step back and forth and it negates 100%. Leet strats.
• Base movement speed of pets. Increase it. 20%. Do it now. Our pets will start to actually hit moving targets. I promise this won’t break your game. They will still die ridiculously fast in WvW, but at least they might get one or two hits off instead of zero. It’ll have next to no impact in PvE. Please do it right now.
• Signet of the Hunt. Increase it to 25% movement speed. Do it now. It won’t break the game. Thieves have it now and it would mean we have an actual useful signet on our hotbar. Don’t test it. You already tested it for thieves. Just do it right now.
That’s it. Those 3 items. 10 minutes of coding. Would give us 1000% more love then what you’ve given us today.
This. Add in stow pet and you would have had kitten near every ranger praising your name. How hard is it to actually keep the pet from popping up, for real real?
4 bullet points > 14, I wonder why people are unhappy
Wow man. How exactly do you know it would take ten minutes? You know NOTHING of game development then. Otherwise if you knew a way to fix/test these changes in ten minutes, you would be working at ArenaNet.
Can’t forget about QA and balance you know. It takes the longest.
Rift just launched fantastic player housing (works for guilds too). I’d love for something similar to be in GW2.
ArenaNet HAS to match or exceed Trion’s implementation of housing. RIFT set a whole new bar to instanced housing.
Being able to open up your house instance to the public and add/retract editing privileges is really cool. Creating guild houses, jumping puzzles and visiting other people’s creations is a very very very cool thing.
I think the housing in GW2 will NOT disappoint
The ONLY thing I miss from GW1 would be: Competitive PvP missions like Fort Aspenwood, and the PvE missions. All the other things like guild halls and GvG will be coming later down the line anyways.
That’s it. I think GW2 is superior in design in all other aspects. But it is really a different game.
I finished my spvp daily in 2 matches. I love the new daily/monthly achievements! Awesome addition.
WHAT! I didn’t know you can block the whole duration on range attacks. AWESOME.
I only played one round in the new map, but it was very very cool! Good job with it and I look forward to playing in it more!
A fair amount of profession changes this patch, but a lot of concerns I read from players on these forums seem to have gone unaddressed. When can we expect a truly big update to address balancing and bugs?
I also feel communication isn’t that great. Can you guys be better about letting the community know what profession issues you are looking at? Can you defend/justify your balancing decisions to the community? Nobody likes being nerfed, perhaps if you would elaborate on your design decisions that would promote more understanding… and less resentment.
I see nothing wrong with this. It would make for more lengthy patch notes as well as more time on their part to explain the changes, but I think it would ease a lot of tension on these forums.
So… The change to traps, intentional or not, is a little surprising. That’s a pretty big kick in the baby maker for trap builds.
What happened to traps?
Cooldown nerfed to 30 secs across the board it seems.
Ooooh really? Fire trap was like 15 or something right? Interesting.
Let’s be honest, they had to cut a few of the ranger notes out due to balance issues, and we will have to wait another month for Signets and shout changes, and changes to the feel and pace of weapons…
That is most likely the reason. Thank you for being logical!! (seriously)
So… The change to traps, intentional or not, is a little surprising. That’s a pretty big kick in the baby maker for trap builds.
What happened to traps?
What? How? They made zero changes last update, which means they had plenty of time to fix/balance/test changes. Besides, they didn’t even fix any bugs, those don’t need testing.
Yes, but I am sure they do not have a QA team JUST for Rangers. The fixes we want are actually very drastic and major. It will take time.
You guys are all a bunch of whiners. I play ranger as my main and yes I was hoping for the changes we all were hoping for too. But you all are acting like a bunch of babies.
They probably didn’t have enough time to properly test the changes so they were left out of the build. It isn’t lack of listening on their part.
Speak for yourself white knight.
No I am just being rational. Obviously the changes weren’t ready. I just understand how game development works.
Yes, and then I guess you don’t understand how PR works. If the company comes in and says “Hey, we hear your complaints and we know we need to fix something, sit tight and we will get it done in mid November”.
You just don’t drop the bomb in exactly mid November without so much as an anticipation that it isn’t what we were promised or, better yet, it is and this is what they think it is necessary. Seriously, anyone could see that Ranger forums is falling apart and then we take the “animation glitch fix” and then the “substantially worthless changes in mid November” without a shred of honesty or decent communication from the developers?
Face it, ANET PR has failed to deliver a proper communication with its customers. You can take all the time you want to fix the game (it has been a long time since games need to be released and fixed cause there were no future patch possibilities) but to not keep an open and honest communication with your customers (specially in a game that is designed to keep customers in for a long time) is an amateur mistake at best.
Take a look at the forums and you will see this is the biggest problem people have with this patch.
I agree an update or explanation would be nice. i’m sure one will be coming soon. Especially after this reaction.

Do you know how customer satisfaction works?
Please. This does not relate. There could be many reasons why the updates we wanted were not included in this patch. One of them is not being that they don’t listen or care what we have to say.
Instead of everyone acting the way they are, just take a step back and breathe a bit. I was disappointed too with these notes (minus greatsword woot!) but it is what it is. Someone above mentioned a test server. That could be a good idea. Maybe if enough people expressed that interest, they could implement that if they found it would both benefit us and them.
All I am saying is, the devs will take us more seriously if we give them constructive posts rather than what we have here.
I speak from experience. I see gamer rage first hand at our company and it doesn’t magically make things work out how everybody wants.

I love my ranger. I love the greatsword changes! I was hoping for something with longbow and pets and shouts etc, but I have been functioning just fine as is. So I can wait till the fixes are ready.

Maybe there was not enough time to fix/balance/test the changes.
I would say a ranger is NOT really best for a beginner. It requires a lot of attention to be put on your pet.
