Also I’ve never seen the ranger as useless and don’t get what people are talking about. I definitely win more than 50% of my 1v1 in WvW.

As far as my build, I use mostly cleric stats with some precision thrown into some of the accessories (forget which kind). I just changed over to runes of the flock though I might change that up again. Dual wolves with longbow/greatsword. protect me/QZ/and i usually swap out the third.

I try and outlast my enemy with my high toughness/healing power and good use of cc to prevent the enemy from healing. Two knockdowns, a knockback, a daze, a fear. I have weak condition removal, no aoe damage (besides barrage), pretty low crit chance, and minimal burst damage. So there are tradeoffs for sure, but that is my current choice!

I usually always play my ranger and it is troublesome that I still see people(especially rangers!) thinking our profession isn’t threatening to others. Quotes from enemy players who I skirmished in WvW from this weekend:

“Ran into a Longbow/Greatsword Ranger with Wolf Form about 7 times, was only able to kill him once I think. Was an IoJ ranger from [Prot], many are curious about your spec; nice job kiting!”

Don’t give up! I finally developed and mastered (though i am still learning) a build I like playing. You can too!

They did. They said many times that this update was to lay the foundation for the upcoming big ones.

‘All weapon and armor skins now have the option to be converted to PvP skins. When activating a skin you will be given the choice to either apply the skin to a PvE item or convert the skin to a PvP-only item. Either action will consume the skin. This change applies to all unused weapon and armor skins in the game, regardless of when the skin was first released.’

A little confusing. Does this mean if I buy cultural armor, I can convert that to pvp armor?? Or does this only work with consumable skins? Like the halloween/wintersday stuff?

Haha sweet! I love my ranger and my pet wolves. Greatsword is an underrated weapon for ranger. Generally other rangers complain about the low damage. There is so much more to that weapon though besides that. Glad I changed your mind about rangers!

Yep. I would buy a collector’s edition version too if that was an option.

It may come down to how good you are at managing your pet. You have to treat your pet as an extension of yourself to play the ranger to its potential. So that might be the determining factor.

What Damaskinos said is the best advice. Try out professions in the Mists.

The elementalist learning curve can be considered higer than others. To play one well, you need to master the skills in all your attunements and switch to them appropriately. So you are managing 20 abilities.

I play a Ranger mostly and love it. Have to pay very close attention to your pet and treat it as an extension of yourself.

After getting best in slot gear for your character, what you do is up to you. I’m passively working towards a legendary. PvP is what I do though. It is never the same, thus never boring for me.

I think so. Some of those item skins are really good. I love the felblade and fiery dragon sword. I still use the felblade skin on my lvl 80 ranger.

I agree with Blacklight. Ranger has lot of good crowd control. In my build I have two back to back knockdowns, a knockback, a daze, and an aoe fear available to me.

However what everyone else mentioned is what we have. Try and bring the fight to the water. Spear#3 can travel a good distance.

With my current build, I seem to be best at solo capping supply camps and supporting my team with heals and crowd control.

For the upcoming WvW patch, what is the other focus besides character progression and rewards? Is there going to be any big changes involving the mechanics and how WvW is played?

Right now it seems the meta is whoever has the bigger zerg wins. I’d like to see more strategy encouraged as far as starving the enemy of supply. More emphasis on siege warfare.

Which traits you using? What stats? It could be build/weapon choices for your playstyle that might not be working out.

I used to run longbow/shortbow with power/toughness/vitality and did ok. Now I run longbow/greatsword with healing/power/toughness and do a lot better.

This weapon set fits a lot better for me. I also got a lot better at managing my pet and using my skills at more appropriate times.

It could be that you just need more practice in pvp with your ranger and not so much your build choice. Always watch your pet and learn to use it. That is my best advice. Also, what heal skill you using? Maybe you are using your heal too early/too late.

I really should experiment more with pets. I use two wolves. Fern hound and the wolf that uses fear.

I pet swap a lot to take advantage of their knockdowns. I like the wolves because they are pretty balanced as far as dmg and survivability. Plus I love wolves

Well GW1 had elite missions. I think it would be cool if it was something like Fissure of Woe or the Underworld like in GW1.

Please no dragons in WvW. Please no world bosses in WvW. Nobody in the WvW community wants that. That line story event sounds kind of shady. “Escort mob X to position Y” type of thing is always a failure, because it will just turn into a PVE farmfest. It’s always easier to just SvE (Server vs Environment) than to actually fight the opposing faction, and remember, people choose the fastest possible route to their gear. If that route excludes killing players, then they won’t attack each other.

I have 50K kills and over 10K badges. Nobody I’ve ever met wants more PVE in WvW.

Whoa whoa. Dragons in WvW….. That actually sounds amazing. Can you imagine doing this huge battle then all of a sudden you see a huge shadow on the ground and a dragon lands right in front of you like the shatterer?!

Fending off player attacks and dragons sounds epic to me hah.

While I agree with pretty much all points brought up, you have to remember that most of what everybody has said was added to the game AFTER launch. I think if we give GW2 a chance to grow into itself, we will see all these things or iterations of them in the future.

I got really lucky with a drop. I have no special magic find gear. I think i am only lvl 2 fractals. Back when fractals was introduced I ran them a good amount of times and got lucky with a drop off a grawl. Keep trying! Maybe don;t focus on getting the drop and just have fun and you will get lucky like me

Haha ok. Yea those numbers seem better. I have around 1k healing power. I think I’m going to stick around there.

I did recently swap out my dwayna runes for flock runes. I miss the near constant regen duration though. Might go back…

Thoughts on this pure support ranger build? I’m thinking of trying this out in PvE dungeon runs and wondering how useful it would be?

With Full Apoth Gear + Full Dwayna + Saffron Soup, I look to be putting out AT LEAST 5k/4s regen with basically full uptime and that’s w/o leveraging the field finishers to stack duration. 30s CD on Spring, 6 ticks of regen boon over 15s, each regen boon lasting 15s. So if you nab first regen tick and last regen tick, you’re regen will run out at the same time the CD finishes on Spring.

If you run double moa’s, you also get the moa’s passive aoe regen + Protection (blue) and Fury (20s) (red).

How much healing power are you at? I had a similar armor/rune setup, but with less healing power. I was thinking of going back to Dwayna runes to increase my regen uptime again.

And to clarify, that is 5k hp every 4 sec right?

Just need tier 3 cultural legs and I am done with my look!

I would never give up my longbow. I do all forms of gameplay (mostly WvW) and I use longbow/greatsword.

I think piercing arrows is a must if you are using longbow. Longbow has low dps because of auto attack, but you shouldn’t be using auto attack on longbow. Switch to your other weapon if you find yourself doing this.

Longbow is a good defensive/offensive weapon. I am talking mostly about point blank shot and barrage. Use the knockback to stop an ally from being stomped or when chasing down an enemy to knock them on their butt.

Use barrage to slow an incoming enemy force or to stop an enemy from running away.

It is a great weapon!

At least personally, I rarely upgrade due to the money cost. I do not have a lot of money. I have upgraded supply camps in the past and I stayed to defend those camps because I spent a lot of money upgrading them. So I felt ownership like it was my camp. However an enemy zerg would just always come and wipe it out within seconds.

I know in the Feb patch, we are going to see more progression in WvW. I hope that they will be doing something like you suggested here as well. I too like to defend points and realize the importance of doing so. It is just boring and offers no incentive for doing so unfortunately.

This is nice like Adine said but not needed, I just pay attention to my conditions, I know if I just lost one and the timer wasn’t up on it then I know that I have 9 seconds till another one drops. If it is that detrimental that I lose the last one I use something to remove it otherwise I am careful if it is confusion or and just let it stay.

That is what I am guessing part of the skill involved in the game, it requires you to pay attention, unlike in some games that have an “Idiot light” that tells you when to use skills when you have something wrong ect ect. From my experience most your good players know the timings, if your running PvP of any type and your wondering if you should pop a signet or wait… your answer is.

• have confusion on and you can spike
  use signet
• have confusion on and your running away
  let passive do it’s work
• have condition on that will kill you and your running away
  use signet

although I assume your talking about pve so

Can we get some kind of feedback as to WHEN a passive action will take place?

For example: the ranger skill Signet of Renewal. Its passive ability is every 10 seconds, it removes a condition.

It would be really nice if on screen or on the skill itself it displayed when this action is going to occur. So if I have confusion on me, I can analyze the situation and see “Ok, the passive is going to activate in 2 seconds so it would be a waste to activate the signet right now and blow the 60 second cooldown.” etc etc

This would help me and I am sure others a ton.

I agree. I have my longbow/greatsword ranger built mostly on cleric stats (healing/power/toughness) and I feel I can hold up for a long time during battles. I have played a ranger since head start weekend and just now I am finally comfortable with my ranger. I have found a good build and weapon setup I really like.

I really think though that it took this long for me to get a nice solid build because our trait tree is kind of all over the place. We have really strong minor traits, but I don’t know. It feels hard to make a synergized ranger build at the moment.

I must say though, the change to signet of the hunt is great. I never had that on my bar and now I always do for WvW. So I am excited for the future changes coming to our profession.

I really liked Soule’s music over the years but I felt Guild Wars 2 was his weakest work. Some tracks are good, but all too much do I hear repeated music in different zones and some of them are just too uppity and cheerful.

I know Guild Wars 2 isn’t necessarily a dark game but Soule produced some really mesmerizing and deep tracks for other games that I just don’t see in this.

In GW2 it just sounds like your typical sword and shield fantasy adventure tunes.

Edit: I also think GW1 had a MUCH better soundtrack

So how am I supposed to finish it while I get two shot whenever I have the box?

Try and hang in there for a couple more months! Big WvW update is coming in Feb. Hopefully we get news on what is included as the time approaches. I know it is going to be huge though and change a lot.

Hmmm as far as I know, we do not yet know what Blackgate is. It may be a nickname to something existing in game already or something that is yet to come. Which is entirely possible since there is a lot of world yet to be explored.

Might be like in PvP. After a match if say you get the most revives on your team, you will be awarded with top player for teammate revivals

I’ve come to realize that this games’s community is the most entitled and loud community I’ve ever seen.

Sure ArenaNet is handling this event much like Halloween’s, they keep the RNG in some places, but at least they are moving forward, you can get 2 toys for free by playing a dungeon each day, you can get all sorts of stuff for free apart from these toys.

They built a freaking “guitar hero”-like mini game, I’ve never seen any MMO give so much content for free. The new jumping puzzle is doable after the 2nd or 3rd attempt. The snow ball PvP is just pure awesome.

If you don’t like the offerings in the store simply don’t buy them, that’s how you vote, that’s how you are heard the best, stop coming to the forums and being so loud please, you are hurting the community, if you spent 75 bucks on gems and then find out that your money was poorly spent maybe you should have spent a little less and try out the RNG first, it’s gambling and the worst you can do is going all in at the start, wait a couple of hours or days, hear the people in local chat talking about how good/bad a box or item is.

Coming to the forums to flame on free content is plain stupid, ArenaNet knows that forum dwellers are a minority, all you are doing is reducing the credibility of the forum users as a whole, and like I said, the best way to “complain” about store items is simply not to buy them.

So to ArenaNet, thanks for Wintersday, it’s a HUGE event, I love how everything was decorated, I know this must take a lot of time to plan, implement and test, and you do it on a F2P game hoping people will buy some stuff and keep supporting the game and I appreciate how everything is done, if I had just a little suggestion is to simply drop the RNG, sell the people the items they want (they are cosmetic anyway) and just sell them at a price at which you feel comfortable, more people will get into it because it is RNG free, you get more store customers, we get more items, everyone is happy, win-win situation.

I think selling all the stuff on the gem store might be a good move for them in the end. Especially if it is for holiday events like this. I might be bias though as I reallllly want the permanent hair style contract! I’d pay $20 for that easy. (Probably more)

There is a big WvW update coming Feb everyone is looking forward to. I have a feeling that patch will drastically change how WvW is played. And I think it will be for the better.

So I have a character back from the old guild wars 1 game, and I just realized today I can get pretty much ALL the rewards, only 1 problem, I never bought eye of the north. I played guild wars 1 for like 2 straight years and did pretty much all there was, I quit when I had finished nightfall hard mode. Now in guild wars 2 I see all the reward and mostly I want the gear, and the sword, is there any way at all to get access to them without having eye of the north ? Thanks!

You can probably get EOTN for like $10 or less. I’d say just buy it. It is worth it for all the skins you get.

Haha yea counterattack on GS is beastly. Thief goes into stealth, use counterattack, drop kick the thief in the gut and they land on their butt. So satisfying.

I like rapid fire on longbow when you are using quickness. You fire so fast and it looks awesome.

Not even that, even little things like point blank shot showing a powerful gust of air infront of the arrow. something little like that. the first 4 longbow skills are literally all the same.

When you use point blank shot when not moving, watch your front leg. I actually like it. Makes me feel like a badkitten. Especially when fired at a charging warrior.

I like when they apply confusion. They let out a scream and it is both cute and terrifying.

I hope nobody comes all in and says I will regret the decision because all I want to do is kill my time, but that’ll be on 25th and that’s two weeks left for that. Reason I make this post is if I could get some guides on what to do when I start my adventure and what profession fulfills my expectations.

I want to be a tanky support profession to heal in PvP and be able to take some hits before someone comes to help and I’ve been searching the wiki and the first one it came up was the Guardian. If Guardian’s the one, what weapon/off hand choice do I need to use to fulfill these two roles (or one of those two).

Also, I’ve been looking at the wiki and saw every profession had something called “Traits”. When I see it it looks like you get certain bonuses for choosing that trait and my question is if you can pick two traits at once and if it’s recommended if you can.

Last, but not least, my last question is the race. As many MMO’s I’ve played I see races have racial traits which enhance your gameplay like Charr Engineer, but my case is which race goes perfect with Guardian?

Hmmm I think what above people mentioned. Try out a bunch of professions. Race doesn’t matter for stats or anything in this game. So don’t feel like you need to pick one over the other to be competitive.

As far as your playstyle, you can achieve it with any profession. Each profession will accomplish this in their own way. Some maybe EASIER than others (guardian and elementalist I’d say). I play a ranger and I play support in dungeons with healing and buffing my group.

Tanking in this game is ineffective and hard to do. Every profession can do everything. It is just a matter of finding the one that you find the most fun to play.

When you are level 2, go to the pvp crosssword icon in top left of screen. Go to heart of mists and test out the professions that way.
