If you are that [Prot] Norn Ranger that I and my Thief roaming partner ran into on Sunday, my hats off to you. Came around that corner and boom, we were in a cat fight. Two on one, I think the outcome was a foregone conclusion but you put up a heck of a fight. Afterwards, both of us commented that you were one tough Ranger.

A: Zergs
B: Cowards (Even when they outnumber us 2:1)
C: Equal size groups that get utterly destroyed

The only semi decent fights we have run into are JQ and a few GEN peeps.

I miss when match up threads were filled with friendly conversation. Especially in regards to calling out good fights with people from enemy servers.

Yea I’m going to stick close to bunker. I’m taking away some healing power and some passive regen to pump up my power so i can actually do direct damage (went from 1.1k to 1.7k power) and give pets 30% crit dmg. I’ll see how that works out tonight.

In the end, would most of these types of mesmers be more susceptible to direct damage or condition damage? I can stack burning and bleeds pretty easily, but other than that, I do crap damage. All my damage is from my jaguar. I have to wait for a good opportunity then put jag in stealth, activate sic em, then entagle the mesmer and hope that burst and immobilize really hurts them.

I was thinking of swapping axe/dagger for greatsword so I could use hilt bash to interrupt their heal (as i have no interrupts right now). As well as being able to jump on top of them when they blink away. Not sure how that would play out though. I really do not like axe XD

1) phantasm mesmer will always win but if they make mistakes you can kill them.
2) Use Jaguar but dont blow signet of the hunt since your pet needs the speed.
3) Concentrate on dodging the phantasm and kill them, leave pet on the real player, ignore clones.

Anyone else have any ideas? Right now it seems most my damage comes from jaguar stealth + sic em + signet of hunt activate. Which isn’t bad, just wondering if there is other ways to combat these really good mesmers.

Im using axe/dagger and sword/torch right now. Maybe i ill drop axe for GS. Which drake do you recommend? Maybe I will drop my lynx for a drake if their aoe is strong.

So for dueling purposes, I am trying to come up with a build that can defeat mesmers 1v1. I think I made one that needs a bit of tweaking. It is a bm build that uses cats and I have 800 or so condition damage for myself for bleeds/burning with torch.

Anyone know of any tactics or builds themselves for fighting mesmers? I am talking about the ones who blink everywhere and use their clones to deal all the damage while they kite around the battlefield.

I don’t think the game is ready for an improved Joey! Servers will crash, quaggans will start eating their young, and Thieves will lose their ability to get away from fights. Don’t do it!

I am not bragging. I am stating facts. I am a respectable ranger on my server and I worked hard to get there. I want to encourage others to play this profession because it truly is very strong and has a lot to offer. I have played my ranger since headstart because it was my favorite in GW1. So yes, I made a ranger for fun.

OP: My best advice to you is play whichever profession you want. Don’t worry about being kitten or being seen in a negative light. Because it is extremely satisfying to prove people wrong

Ask anyone in the WvW community on Isle of Janthir if they know Estel Wolfheart. Their answer will further backup my points made here.

Keep your pet close and go kick some butt.

Shortbow is a great weapon. It shoots quickly and has some great skills. Really can’t go wrong with it. Greatsword is a very defensive weapon. It is my favorite

Same as far as PvE knowledge goes. I do fractals with my guild and I’m usually the one reviving others.

For both WvW and sPvP, I switched to pure melee weapons and love it. Don’t listen to the QQ threads. Ranger has problems, but ALOT of them have been addressed.

This class is one of the most broken classes since gw2 launch day. Broken traits, broken utility skills, broken weapons skills, broken pet AI.
DPS? sub-par
Survivability? only like one viable build
PvE? sub-par
Dungeons? like engineers, nobody likes us

WvW roaming? on par. but somehow we’re getting some ridiculous pet nerf
Overall maintenance of the class? devs are slow at fixing us. fast at dropping nerf bombs

actually, tagging is the only thing rangers excel at…. Axe #1 (bounces), LB #5 (barrage), LB #2 + Piercing arrows (piercing chaingun), SB + Piercing Arrows, Traps, pet AOE (Murwellow, Drakes, Devourers)

No. Rangers excel at actually being a competitive profession. At least in PvP. If you don’t believe me send me a pm and we will dual. Though 1v1 is not an example of balanced play, skill plays an important part and I will gladly prove to anyone that ranger is a great profession.

I don’t win every fight, but I make the other person really work for that win.

I mostly do solo/small group roaming WvW and my ranger is incredibly viable there. Just switched to pure melee and I love it. My damage is pretty good, but that is only so because I also have really good defense and healing too.

Had fun in FC BL this morning/afternoon

We had most of the bottom of the map controlled until FC came in force.

Don’t run longbow for duels. A s/d thief cannot be successfully kited if he’s any good. He’ll be in your face pretty often, and thus the value of your longbow is greatly diminished.

2 things about this thief:

- His main damage comes from the autoattack and the 2nd chain of his Flanking Strike (the stab attack after he evades).
- He can stunlock pretty well if you don’t bring stability and don’t position well to not give him your sides or back for his long kitten daze sneak attack.

Never wait to heal when you’re low against a s/d thief. They’ll stunlock your heal attempts and finish you off with the auto.

Basically, take the evade attack, and save the dodges for the stab and the final chain of his autoattack (also a stab). In other words, save your dodges for his stabbing animations, not his slashing ones (the stab part of his auto chain inflics weakness, which will cripple your endurance regen).

That is helpful thank you. I normally would stay in greatsword against these thieves. Maybe switch to longbow to get off a knockback or try and burst with rapid fire. Maybe Sword/dagger would be better against them instead of longbow.

So a good method is to stay toe to toe with this kind of thief?

I’ve slowly been pumping more offense into my build and taking points out of the bm tree. I was at 25 pts but at 20 now. Might go to 15, bu no lower than that. I love faster pet swapping. What is a good counter against skill #3? I use QZ, protect me, and sig of the wild for utilities right now.

I am willing to change things up if there is a good counter out there.

EDIT:
If I bring owl or alpine wolf, I have access to chill. But didn’t want to do so since they can purge conditions quickly.

As title says, this type of thief gives me the most trouble in a 1v1 scenario. I use greatsword/longbow. Pretty decent crit % and crit dmg. Good toughness and power. With the kind of build I use, are there any strategies and/or utilities I can bring to make it easier to fight them?

Their shadowstep on sword is tough to fight against. I can’t cripple or chill them because it will be removed when they shadowstep back.

For the bursty thieves, maybe bring protect me. That is my defense against them if they get the jump on me.

Ugh longbow is NOT terrible for 1v1. PM me in game so we can battle and I will prove this to you

There are already prestige items out there. It is nice to have some skins that are easier to obtain. Plus it might be a prestige item down the line. Since it is for a limited time. (I think)

Shout out to the group of DH and SF in southern IoJ just then! Was an awesome three-way fight. Had a lot of fun with the human mesmer from [KING], and the two thieves from [PvP]. I was the little asura with creepy eyes from [HARD].

Also, how about we get a fight club organised for this tier some time soon? I’ve run in to a lot of small groups, and a lot of them have told me that they’re definitely interested in duels and small fights. I’d organise it myself, but I’m not very accustomed to American time zones as I’m one of those terrible PvD guys from Australia.

I much prefer the large array of tools the ranger has when compared to the thief. Yea the thief can do a lot of damage quickly, but when that fails against my ranger, the tables are turned in my favor really quickly and it is the thief who is running away from me

The thief is probably the most mobile, but ranger is also very mobile as well. You need specific weapons for it though.

My defense against thieves is protect me. It kind of stinks I have to use a utility slot for defense against one type of profession, but I guess it is a useful skill regardless.

Longbow is great. I use it with my greatsword. Just don’t sit in longbow since the autoattack is slow. Swap to it for the other skills as you see fit. Rapid fire is actually a good burst skill with quickness.

I enjoy dueling out in WvW. If there was some kind of official dueling system I think I would miss how it is right now in WvW. Most servers do the ‘fight club’ behind the windmill which is super cool. I have also just come across other people roaming around and we do a /bow and duel it out.

Honestly, thieves are not that big of a deal to fight against. You are either built to defend against them or you are not. You have to make that decision. If you aren’t built to go toe to toe with a thief, run in a group.

I might be biased because I am a ranger, but I think all the crying about thieves is not justified. Most of the thieves in WvW are glass cannons and rely on stealth for defense. Make sure they can’t go into stealth. Win.

I have an aoe fear that is helpful for many uses. aoe regen. Healing spring. Quickness revive/stomp. Lots of interrupts.

I feel very useful to my team in WvW.

I mean, did you see that??? he actually got the guys targeting you while using a skill TWICE, while still using next to every ability as soon as it gets off CD!!!

3 signets??? without even the cleanse one?!?!
To boot you’re running axe mainhand but can’t land a splitblade to save your life.
Go shortbow if your gonna be a nub.

Oh and the jaguar is much better than a bird, its stealth critting is intense, especially since anything but TPvP lvl players won’t be able to effectively kite the guy at all.

The owl chill is actually very good. Long duration and low cooldown…Not everybody has to run the same ranger spec.
