You mean “add” points by playing and earning them, not buing them somehow, right?

Yes, you earn points in the HoM by playing Guild Wars 1. You can ‘buy’ points by trading for consumables for certain titles such as sweet-tooth or party animal but you have to get those items from other people in the game.

To get all of the HoM skins that are available, you have to get 30 out of 50 HoM points. That is not all that hard to do in fairly short period of time.

I wouldn’t say that. It is pretty time consuming. Depends how familiar you are with GW1. I’d say you are looking at months to go from 4 to 30 points.

Prisoner's dilemma

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki kitten for_tat is a highly effective strategy in game theory for the iterated prisoner’s dilemma.

The strategy was first introduced by Anatol Rapoport in Robert Axelrod’s two tournaments, held around 1980.

Geez i got an infraction by saying kitten for-tat solves prisoner’s dilemma. Geez these mods should do their research first.

t i t for tat wtf is a kitten for tat?

Haha that is their auto filter at work. One time I had to change the word “fun” into something else because it came out as “kittenn”

Whisperer's Armor

in Players Helping Players

Joey.3928

@Joey – Yes.

Ranger (at the time) 65ish.

Guardian to 27 to join the Vigil, go shopping, buy leather pants from vendor, transmute onto white low level pants, merging the display, but keeping the low level white stats (stats on level 70 item gone) and the result is an ‘account bound’ really bad piece of white armor…that looks really nice. Drop it in the bank, Ranger picks it up and transmutes it onto whatever (just pulling the look).

Ironically, ‘after’ I had already bought the leather legs, it was at that point that I had the concern that I wouldn’t be able to transmute it because it wasn’t an item a Guardian could use. Luckily that doesn’t matter. The soulbound warning ended up being account bound, and I had read a bunch before hand and the consensus seemed to be that wouldn’t happen. It was a nearly 2g gamble, but it paid off.

Just in case, here’s my Ranger with Whisper (chest)/Vigil (legs). Hands are crafted, I think the boots might be too. Was looking for the least bulky things I could find. I suppose I could have photo shopped it, but I’m not that smart.

Edit: And to reiterate, it’s the Guardian that does the first transmutation. The guardian will need a ‘fine’ stone (since the source is level 80), and your Ranger will need a fine stone if applying it to 80 armor. The first transmute is done to a vendor white. I wouldn’t risk doing it to a blue, green, crafted, etc. Vendor bought cheap white bought with your lowest level character.

Thanks! Now I have more motivation to level my guardian!

Whisperer's Armor

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Joey.3928

Joey.3928

Unfortunately, there’s not. You’re stuck with whatever faction you chose for that character, and since all the armor is soulbound once you purchase it, it wouldn’t work to make an alt join the order of whispers either.

Actually, this does work rather well.

1. I ran an alt up to around 26-27 and joined the Vigil (I wanted the leather pants).

2. As soon as I joined, I was able to run out to the vendor and buy the pants with my Guardian (who can’t wear armor of that type, which is important later).

3. Used the lowest level character I had (I’m cheap :p) to buy the cheapest ‘white’ leather legs I could from an armor vendor in a city, and threw it in the bank.

4. My guardian picked up the white pants from the bank, and used a ‘Fine’ transmutation stone (since the source is a level 80 item), to transmute ‘only the look’ onto the white lets, keeping the stats of the white legs intact.

Two things to note here:

1. You are allowed to transmute things, apparently, using a character that could never use those items because of class restrictions.

2. Even though it warns you that the resulting item will be soul bound, the item I received was ‘account bound’. Whether this is a bug that will be patched later or not, I can’t say, I did this less than a week ago. It would be a shame if they did, I can’t think of any reason to put in such a punishment. They got me to spend money, what do they care?

5. Put my new low level ‘account bound’ white pants in the bank (with the look of the Vigil legs).

6. Login my Ranger, pick up the ‘account bound’ white pants, and used a ‘basic’ transmutation stone (because I was not level 80 at the time and wanted to put them on the pants I was currently wearing, though I know I’ll need a ‘fine’ when I eventually morph them on my final Exotic armor) to apply the look to my current legs.

7. Result: Whispers top with Vigil leggings.

Very interesting! I am a little confused though. Is your lvl 27ish alt the same as the guardian who bought the pants? And do you have to buy the armor on a different character right away after joining an order?

So I have a lvl 80 ranger in order of whispers. I have a guardian who i am going to join vigil with. When my guardian joins the vigil, I buy the armor on the guardian in order to get it on my ranger?

Here is the problem I think. It is VERY hard to have multiple builds on one character. This was never an issue in GW1. It was very easy to switch things up on the same character.

Now I really think GW2 has MORE potential for diverse character builds. The issue is that there is no easy way to switch things up OUTSIDE of sPvP. Once we can load/save traits it will be better.

Also I wish that PvE stats were set up the same as in sPvP. An amulet/jewel holds all stats. If that was somehow an option for us to do, that would make it very easy to swap builds. All you have to do is swap out two items.

Yea. At a low level and especially for a new player, it is definitely safety in numbers. I’d say you will start seeing an easier time playing your character in WvW around lvl 20. Since you will have both utility slots unlocked.

Just know your limits and have fun. Best thing about this game is you have a lot of options to play how you want. Go ahead and lvl from 2-80 strictly in WvW!

Let's talk about WvW incentives & rewards

in WvW

Posted by: Joey.3928

Joey.3928

I prefer to play in a dynamic WvW, so I do not agree on rewarding more holding a point, that would make people sit inside a tower/keep and very few would attack objectives.

But I agree on rewarding more people escorting Dolyaks and doing repair runs, also I would like to see support being rewarded as now the only thing which will net our precious bag is damage.

I don’t think there’s an easy solution, because if you reward defense more then few/none attacks, if you reward attack more then very few/none defends. It’s already bad when the three servers cycle trough maps to conquer objects and never clash in a battle, granted that I haven’t seen it happen very often, but it still happened.

So the current balance of attack and defense rewards will have to do untill ANet realizes a brilliant way to dynamically scale it.

I’ve said this before, the fights should be the incentive. Why do people need incentive to PvP in a PvP function of the game?

Because this PvP mode has money sinks, so it needs to reward people for their succes, otherwise you’re forced to PvE too keep up with costs and that’s not an option for many.

Not many people stay behind a cap’d tower etc to stand guard. If you do that you are missing out on badges, karma, xp, and gold. I really do think something should be done about this. As long as the rewards can not be farmed by people sitting in a tower, I do not see the negatives.

As of right now only offensive play is directly encouraged because of the rewards. I’d like to see pro-active defense encouraged too!

I LOVE WvW. It is all I do usually when logging on to play. However, I logout a lot now due to many of the things that I see are problems in WvW. I just get bored.

I do not have a large group of people to play WvW with. Which leaves me playing solo, or with 3-5 people. Usually when I play, my side has the outmanned buff. My small group can take a camp or even a tower. We can setup some arrow carts etc to help defend. However, the enemy zerg will come and demolish us within seconds. It is just very demoralizing.

You hinted at something about tallying up participation throughout the week. I LIKE this idea. I think if ArenaNet did something like this, but even on a daily scale it would help people feel more accomplished. So people could see, “Hey, I contributed +100 points today for my server.”

I REALLY like your ideas about rewarding defense which in turn would split up the zerg. Which are two separate problems that can be solved by something like you suggested.

I usually run solo and will cap/defend supply camps. I know I am helping my server, but it can be awfully boring. Some kind of reward system would GREATLY diminish this bored feeling.

Another thing that is very boring is escorting dolyaks. You are not rewarded for it at all which in turn DOES make it boring. I have limited time to spend in WvW. I am trying to earn gold, have fun, and help my server. If I am escorting a dolyak, I am only accomplishing one of those. Why can’t I get some kind of reward for doing those actions?

I really don’t think WvW needs sweeping changes that will change how people play. I think there just needs to be more incentive/rewards for doing the above actions. This in turn, will actually change how people play WvW and I think it would solve a lot of problems people are having.

So I’m about to get my first character (Guardian) to 80. I’ve been wondering what to do after that. I’ve also never done dungeons but I do play WvW on a daily basis. I’ve come down with a few choices

1. Level an alt (Thief/Ranger) so I can enjoy WvW more (somehow I don’t fully enjoy it as a Guardian, probably because I don’t have a solid group to do WvW with).
2. Farm for Exotics / Equipment (whether via field or dungeons)
3. Run dungeons? I don’t know what rewards there is yet.
4. Attempt map completion (but waypoints are hell expensive for my money right now).

I’d appreciate it if anyone can give me some insight/advise on what to do. Thanks!

I use greatsword/longbow in all forms of gameplay with Cleric armor (Healing/power/toughness) and dwayna runes. I survive just fine usually. Counterattack on greatsword, point blank shot on longbow, and protect me do a good job at countering 100 blade warriors and bursty thieves.

Instead of stacking more cleric armor for my jewels and accessories, I am thinking about getting some precision on my accessories to boost my crit chance as it is currently only 4% right now.

Related to this I’d also like to the see the target nearest enemy work function actually target the nearest enemy regardless of whether they are in front of, beside, or behind me. I’ve bound a hotkey to this function (used “C” similar to GW1) but it only targets a foe when I’m facing their direction. I’d much prefer that it target the foe that is truly closest to me regardless of the direction I’m facing.

I am playing a ranger for a long time now…the way the traits/skills are functioning right now at least for pve/WvsW you have practically only 1 option: glass cannon. just stay as far as possible from zerg/mobs etc and dps…everything else is a joke. “Tanky ranger” simpkly does not exist unless you are referring against another ranger. The only benefit I have right now having played ranger is that i am 95% confident that I can kill one when I see him in battlefield while playing my alts even my guardian:)

This is so incredibly incorrect it hurts my brain. There are actually a few “tanky” Ranger builds that are difficult to kill and can still put out some serious damage. I know there’s at least one other person on the forums who has a tanky build that’s similar to the one I’m about to post that I use in sPvP. It’s really tanky with relatively high armor and health, lots of evasion, lots of healing, and good condition removal.

http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mcoVMzmzMmvagMmvagM9MxaxcRqcmsb8kir7khV7kir7khf7070z7kIM70V7owY8ofy

How do you do against conditions? How often does that trait tick where pets take a condition from you? I’m using signet of renewal and healing spring, but both of those are long cooldowns. Also, how often do you crit? I see you have sigils that react based on when you crit. Do you see those sigils being activated a lot?

Empathic Bond removes all conditions every 10 seconds. Between the regen from Natural Healing, Rejuvenation, Troll Unguent, Signet of the Wild, and Oakheart Salve, conditions that aren’t removed quickly are basically nullified.

I’m pretty sure crit chance is around 25-30% (I’m at work, I can’t check), but with Call of the Wild and Rampage as one I can get over 50 seconds of Fury (with Water and Monk runes) which puts me around 50% crit chance. It doesn’t proc much with the axe, but with sword it goes off pretty regularly. I can’t say how often exactly, but I see the fire burst regularly enough to know that it’s working.

Natural healing only effects pet correct? What is this rejuvenation you speak of? I’m using dwayna runes as well as longer regen trait and healing spring and i usually have regen up at all times. This is interesting though since you have different kinds of health regen that all stack on top of each other rather than just stacking in duration like me. I wonder if I should try the same thing.

No, Natural Healing also heals the Ranger. Rejuvenation is the minor Nature Magic trait. It applies regeneration at 75% health.

Yes, there are multiple heals applied to me at all times, which is pretty nice. In addition, a good portion of the heals can’t be stripped or stolen, unlike the regeneration boon.

Ok THIS is why ArenaNet NEEDS to have better tooltips for traits specifically. I did not know this. I’m pretty happy with my traits right now, but I am liking that Natural Healing trait now. Thanks for all the info!

Also, based on this fight with the thief, I noticed you kind of spam your shortbow skills once they are off cooldown. I would wait to use them until a particular scenario arises. For instance, the daze/stun on the #5 skill should mostly be used RIGHT when the enemy is trying to heal. You might find that more beneficial. Keep at it. Ranger is tough to play well.

Yes, damage isn’t everything, I agree. I wouldn’t say to not look at damage though, because in the end, you still gotta kill your enemies.

I have nothing against the GS and Longbow as primary weapons and agree that they do work well in the right build. However, the short bown isn’t solid just because it outdamages other weapons. It still brings a dodge, a cripple, and a stun for mobility and defense as well.

Yea shortbow has everything. It was very hard for me to pick longbow or shortbow. Honestly I picked longbow all because of the knockback.

My advice (if you dont do this already) since you enjoy rescuing downed allies: Use longbow #4 skill to your advantage. If you see an enemy trying to finish off an ally, run in close enough to knock that enemy back. Use quickness (from pet swap or quickening zephyr) to revive people faster!

Your favorite attacks and why.

1. Longbow #4: Point Blank Shot – I like knocking people off cliffs, interrupting enemies trying to finish allies, and my favorite is interrupting a warrior as he tried charging at me.

2. Greatsword #4: Counterattack – I like to block ranged attacks. I REALLY like to block melee (especially a thief who tries to backstab me) and then kick them in the gut. It is a really cool animation and makes you feel like a badkitten.

3. Lonbow #2: Rapid Fire – Pair this with quickness and you can pump out damage pretty quick with your pet. Also the animation with quickness looks awesome.

Just because one weapon might not do as much damage as another doesn’t make it useless. I run longbow/greatsword (supposedly two bad weapons with low dps) and I kill people just fine. Don’t forget about your pets rangers, we are nothing without them.

My advice is try all the weapons and do NOT look at damage. See what each weapon brings to the table as far as skill usage (keep in mind combo fields/finishers). Decide off that.

I’m never going to drop my longbow or greatsword with my current build. Plus having a thief stealth to try and backstab me as I counterattack them with greatsword and dropkick them in the gut feels AMAZING.

On increasing the level cap

I do not want more levels. I was max level 20 for six years in GW1 and look how long I played that game. Stuff like that doesn’t matter to me. As someone above me said, give us more stuff to do/improve upon existing content (PvP for me please!)

Otherwise once people reach the new max level, what then?

"Progression" in MMOs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Joey.3928

I think ArenaNet should focus on making a game for the people who actually LIKE the game. GW1 had the same kind of progression as GW2. I played that on and off for more than five years. I strictly did PvP in that game for the last few years.

I love GW2 to death and I think the PvP is super engaging and requires a lot of skill to truly master. I have played a ranger since head start and I have just NOW mastered ONE build.

If you don’t like the game, don’t play it!! GW2 is different than all these other mmo’s with progression you are used to. Just because it offers a different way to play does NOT make it a bad game.

I look forward to ArenaNet’s features/changes for sPvP and especially WvW. I will be playing this game until I am not allowed to anymore.

I think the problem is players are spread too thin rather than not having people actually playing. I have no need to go to Orr personally. I have my exotic armor. I still need map completion so I will go back to Orr one day. I just do sPvP or WvW whenever I play though.

Ability progression like GW1

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think I can see ArenaNet creating more utility skills. I also can see them giving us the ability to choose from specific skills for our weapons. For instance, you can swap out skills 1-3 on sword, but skill 1 will only have 3 skills to choose from, skill 2 the same etc.

However the reasons they chose to have skills tied to weapons in the first place was for balance as well as making sure players are not useless.

I encountered many people in GW1 who would put their skill points in areas that was not benefiting them at all. As well as they had skills on their bar that absolutely did not help them.

Before we hope to see any of these changes though, they have to continue focusing on fixing what is already broken in game with skills not working as well as making sure every profession has traits that make sense.

Why is WvW such a grindfest?

I really do not see a lot of badges drop either. However I probably have a spent 50% of my time in WvW since Aug 25. I have 104 badges right now. Factor in some siege I bought, I probably only have had around 150 badges so far total.

I think some kind of increase or giving badges for other activities and not just getting lucky off loot drops would maybe help.

WvW Suggestions?

in WvW

Posted by: Joey.3928

Joey.3928

Here are mine:

1. Outmanned Buff should reflect a buff in stats like you suggested. it would prove more useful.

2. Player/Server rankings. Player rankings would maybe help individual players feel more…useful. Especially in situations where they are outmanned and cap a single supply camp only to have it wiped off the map in seconds by the enemy zerg. Their actions are forgotten. YOU know you capped that camp, but you don’t feel rewarded for it. At least i don’t.

If there was a way for me to know how many points I helped accumulate for my server in a play session or throughout the whole 1 week battle, it would help with my morale.

Maybe no mechanics need to be changed/added and all that needs to be done is better player feedback. Show me what I did in this play session or in this week long battle. Because I do not run with the zerg or in a big guild, I often feel defeated because I can kill dolyaks and cap supply camps, but it never lasts. I don’t FEEL like I am helping at all.

I am a good player. I consider myself very skilled with my ranger. However, I just constantly feel defeated due to constantly being overwhelmed, not by skill, but numbers.

Server populations and ranked system

in WvW

The outmanned “buff” is a joke. And I hope it is something they are looking at closely internally.

Many a times on IoJ I have been playing (usually with outmanned buff, but I always go on a map where we have the least points capped) and it sucks. All I and the few friends I have can do is cap a supply camp right before counter is 0 and kill yaks.

As soon as we cap that camp, the enemy zerg will be there.

One time over this weekend me and three others held a supply camp from 5-10 SoR or BG (dont remember). It was really fun even though we eventually got severely outnumbered. I just wish we were more rewarded I guess? If there was some way our efforts actually meant some sort of difference. Either personally or for our server. Otherwise we just literally get wiped off the map and our efforts are forgotten. It is very demoralizing.

This weekend I found myself logging off the game because I just felt so beaten. We have 0 points on the map and I am a good player! I can solo a camp by myself and do all this, but it doesn’t matter because all it takes is a zerg of players to take it back within seconds. I don’t know what ANet can do to help people like me feel like we are helping our server who are not part of a large guild and do NOT want to follow a zerg around.

Some sort of ranking system would be cool. Especially individual player rankings.

What Happens If Homeworlds Merge?

in WvW

A better question, do you think the current way WvWvW works is broken?Should it really be FA vs TC vs YB or SoS vs SBI vs JQ? What if a server is primarily focused on dungeons and PvE content? Should the players in that server suffer since the server would be considered “full” still.

Server may be full, but full of what? Botters? Dungeon runners? Non-wvw folks?

That is interesting indeed. So more like a classic server selection where you pick a PvE server or WvW server. I guess with these free transfers if people think their server is dead in the sense of WvW they can move off, but then you have that whole issue of your guild losing all upgrades.

Right, I am not saying it is something they have to be thinking about right now. However it is inevitable. So it is just a curious question as to the course of action they would take.
