@Kahziel:
Sorry but that doesn’t make much sense. I’m pretty sure when someone asks if you want to “have some cake,” they don’t expect you to hold on to it without ever eating it. I’ll stick to “having” cake by eating it, thank you.
I apologize, apparently this figure of speech is going right over your head. There is no spoon. Or cake for that matter. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_can't_have_your_cake_and_eat_it
Can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Well then what do you expect me to do with it? That’s why you bake it in the first place. That’s like saying I can’t charge my mantras and expend them, too. They don’t do anything unless you charge them first..
I guess you aren’t familiar with the expression…? If you eat your cake, you no longer have it, it’s gone. If you want to keep your cake, ie have your cake, you can’t eat it. It’s an expression meaning you cannot have both of something. In relation to this discussion I was saying you have to give up some good traits in order to have other good traits, you cannot have everything, or it would not be fair or balanced.
Here we go… here’s the costume described above. Color scheme goes like this:
Head – Gunmetal, Abyss, Cotton Candy
Shoulder – Lipstick, Gunmetal, Abyss
Chest – Gunmetal, Ocean, Abyss
Hands – Gunmetal, Abyss, Dewdrop
Legs – Gunmetal, Ocean, Abyss
Feet – Mithril, Gunmetal, Abyss
What gs is that?
You said there were a lot of traits that didn’t match up easily and that a person had to give up good stuff to match traits… I said if we didn’t have to give up stuff that would be OP.
I don’t see all these lackluster traits and utilities you complain of, just as I don’t see torch and scepter to be crap like so many people say. I see a lot of things that are great when you build for them to be great otherwise they aren’t so great. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.
I’m also going to throw in a I completely disagree with Fay…. Mesmer has so many really awesome traits and utilities that there’s a reason there are “useful traits that would work well together can’t be matched up without losing other valuable things.” Yeah, you have to sacrifice some traits to get other traits but if you didn’t talk about OP. You keep mentioning how much you play mesmer, have you tried playing other classes as well? Because I really don’t see this identity crisis thing you bring up at all and as far as oompf I really doubt that’s the case when I can use Pyro’s build and pretty much 1v1 anyone and often 1vX and win. I think maybe you’re spending too much time trying to make mantras match up to other mesmer abilities/builds when they just don’t, not in the way you’re trying to use them anyway.
So, the Mesmer has really intrigued me for a while now and I think it’s time to roll one.
Any advice/suggestions on a build or weapon choices or anything like that?
I know these posts pop up relatively frequently, sorry for the noob questions >.<
Actually reading the forum would probably be helpful. Build list is stickied at the top.
OP should not worry, fact is we got nerfed in january, dint you guys know we got unviable after this?
/Osicat
WvW not really a great comparison
Too many people play PvE on WvW and never PvP content. Many WvW players are not exposed enough to fight against mesmer. My guild leader have over 2 stack of honor badges and I usually wipe the floor with him in heart of mist.
The video is not proof. Those theives never really attack the mesmer to be considered properly experienced
The only way Anet can migrate the Mesmer problem is to create a dugeon boss that has the same mechanics as a mesmer
There is that one boss in storyline that has psuedo mesmer effects. He has 3 clones at all times (if you kill them, they respawn), but you can easily tell it’s him or not based on the healthbars and your quest healthbar.
There’s a mesmer you fight as a skill point in one of the camps in Malchor’s Leap. The priestess of Lyssa is a mesmer. There’s a mesmer you fight to get to a skill point in one of the snowy areas whose name I can’t remember.
I use the OOW helm with a mix of T1 & T2 cultural armors. I really like the aristocratic look on a Mesmer. Sorry for the dark screenshot:
Cool pic!
Thus, they are best used in a sustained skirmish where you can engage/disengage fairly often. In WvW this basically occurs all the time around most of the map.
yes this ^ but that doesn’t make them very versatile unless zerg fight is the only thing you’re interested in. I like to do a lot of small team yak killing and camp flipping tho
I gotta agree with Pyro here, I tried out a mantra build and while it did big numbers phantasm and direct damage wise it had no survivability outside a zerg setting where I could try not to be directly targeted. The trouble with it was I gave up my awesome utility slots for a couple mantras that despite the restorative mantras trait did little to help me stay alive.
Finally finished gathering the gear to try out this build and I love it. I tried it once before but with my Knight’s gear and it just wasn’t enough hp, it didn’t work well at all, but with the Soldier gear it works awesome. I ran around and did a lot of solo yak killing and camp flipping. A number of different times I had thieves try to kill me and run away as they found themselves suddenly near death, only managed to catch one tho haha. D/d eles drop like boxes of rocks. Had two d/d eles try to take me at a camp I was in the middle of flipping and they were downed before they knew what happened. The eight guys that came in behind them killed me tho xD
Edit: According to the wiki, the lyssa boons last 5 seconds. This is perhaps false, but if that information is accurate, then the runes are easily the worse choice, no discussion even needed. The 70% boon duration would barely scrape you past 8 seconds of boons.
This is true, only 5 seconds. I have a rabid set that has Lyssa runes on it currently. They’re good for some things and I rather like them as they can provide that little extra push needed sometimes if you’re fighting multiple people/trying to finish someone in a group/stay alive but they’re not great for party buffing because the up time is so short.
I rather like DE clones attacking nearest target. It used to bother me at first but I’ve gotten to where I can pretty well get them on the target I want, or close enough that when I shatter it doesn’t matter. There have been times when DE clones randomly attacking some mob in wvw has saved me as they brought a mob in for me to rally off of.
Mesmers are so epicly awesome later on that it has to build up slow or it’d just overwhelm you.
I think I may just have to try the scepter so I can run with 2 off hands, but it’s going to be really hard to give up the staff. I can see myself on my kitten a lot.
I’ve been toying around with this idea too, I’m so used to the staff it’s practically lazy mode.
Don’t be lazy Jalliel!
/hides
PS: Need moar AC runs.
I’ll be home in a few hours and we can do AC, I only need one more run thru of the three paths and I’ll have the whole armor set! And then to try out this new build idea I have uh crikey! ;o

Phantom Galatea
Where is that mask from? o.o
Check the “show us your Mesmer” thread stickied at the top of the page for ideas.
Oh I’ve done that Alex, so embarrassing
I prefer using sword with torch. Try watching Seven Mirror’s videos or Osicat’s to get an idea of how to use the sword. Mesmer has to move in and out of melee range to be most effective, if you try to stand there just hitting stuff it’s not going to go well for you. FLIMP’s video in his guide is with scepter. His is a stealth heavy build also, like Seven’s. Osi’s vids show lots of tactics on how to move when fighting and are worth watching even if you’re not running a shatter/crit build.
Check out Mr Prometheus or Lazy Kai guides to leveling. Theyre in the build list. That should answer most any questions about lvling, your end game build will be determined by your preferred play style and what you want to do.
Either are viable. Sword just takes some getting used to how to move around with it if you’re used to ranged attacks. What off hand are you using?
Hmm, weakness is a matter of opinion.
So what are you here complaining about? o.o
I farm quite well on my mesmer. If you don’t like the way mesmer tags mobs quit your cry babying and go roll one of those other classes that you seem to think are better :P
You can tag mobs fine in a situation where there’s not a hundred other people vying for the same mobs- in that situation everyone is going to have trouble tagging mobs. And why the heck would you even bother trying? There’s tons of places where you aren’t competing with so many people that mob tagging is a problem. Try using your brain, open your eyes, and go check out the oodles of other events or non events to farm at.
Mesmers can tag all mobs, even if there are multiple groups at a time.
That is BS. Unless you are on a low pop server there is absolutely no way
Wording, mesmers can tag all mobs.
Yes, they can, doesn’t mean they will do it 100% of the time.
Kai and Esplen have it right, Mesmer can tag mobs easy peesy. Shatters are AOE after all and we have more than enough illusion generation capabilities for shatter fodder, add in your regular attacks and it’s no problem. Just don’t camp at pent/shelter where there’s 500 people and you won’t have any trouble at all lol. I bet even ele have trouble tagging things at that kitten pent/shelter event that everyone sits at :P Best ones for loot are the temple events. If you keep looking at Lyssa she will keep spawning oodles of adds for you to tag = oodles of loot. But the guys who actually want that temple open will hate you xD
I figured the time zone thing wrong and was there an hour early, so I left and went to wvw with guild and wound up missing the meet up entirely
Maybe next week!
It’s sooo much better for me it’s amazing, I don’t understand why others are having different results o.o
I hate the no res thing, it makes it practically impossible to do dungeons with random or inexperienced groups :/
Not sure what you just typed there… and well To be honest if it was supossed to be funny I’ll say: Try again.
The Shatterer is a dragon in the game.
Nice job on the guide, this is a very solid build
I know what the thread is called, but having the name nerf/change doesn’t make the change any less of a buff. It took a useless weapon with horrible damage, and wimpy boon stacking and turned it into a potent condition damage weapon capable of stacking a condition that isn’t nearly useless.
Read the actual content of the thread before you talk any more nonsense. You’re making yourself look like a fool.
Maybe you should actually read the content of the thread before you talk nonsense because despite the title of the thread the majority of the posters in there think the changes were good lmao
Main reason for prec is for the nifty vigor minor trait in the dueling tree that allows you to dodge up armies of clones. I have a build I’ve been working on actually that rather fits your description. When I get home on my computer I’ll post up some info.
Basically I think in Germany anything with copyrighted music won’t be view-able as I understand it.
Yaks is the best name!
I’ve farmed and gathered and story quested Orr with a variety of builds and they’ve all worked fine. I think that most builds will work for pve it all depends on play style and gear. What type gear are you using and what weapons do you prefer? You like shattering?
Here is the big trick though, and requires a ton of battlefield awareness. You can drop the curtain, then detonate it for the pull. However, the combo field still persists on the ground for the normal duration, even though the actual curtain is gone. This means you can yank someone to you with the detonate, and then still get the 14 seconds of retaliation from the invisible combo field.
Oh oh oh, I thought the chance at using it for leap was gone after detonate which has caused me some indecisive moments but that is pretty epic, very very handy to know thanks!!!
Quex, why were you infracted for this post? whats the matter?
I’m guessing because he had caps locked the title of the thread (which I thought was fine, it was representative of yelling ‘avengers assemble’ and funny I thought haha) but I guess the forum mods didn’t like it and got rid of the caps :/
shak, I do the same thing using the cry grants retaliation trait, works great with all the people hitting you getting confusion and retaliation hehe. I have also been using focus, a mix of t/p/p and p/t/v gear/accessories. Works well with a lot of survivability.
You just gotta learn where to roll. If I want one to be on a certain target I run close to it and dodge, the clones aggro the closest target. However, most of the time I don’t care, shatters are AOE so the more mobs the merrier.
Yeah, what Pyro said, the build thread ought to be designed more like the ‘post your videos’ thread where there’s an organized list with links to what’s what. Linking to other threads also allows long discussions in those separate threads about the builds that just isn’t going to happen or will just add to confusion in that "Post your Builds Thread’ that was linked.
I would look in the Mesmer forums. . . there are several great threads about Immortal Mesmer builds and Bunkering etc. Good luck.
Edit: Apologies, there might have been a bit of sarcasm in this post, I’m generally not one to inject that into my posts however it was funny to see this thread when the threads all over the first page are about bunker builds.
People are too lazy to read anything :o
Get one of everything! And mix and match it so it looks purdy
I think the mesmer video thread should be stickied. I don’t really think specific builds should be stickied but I think a post with a categorized list of links to each build thread stickied would be nice.
Are you talking about mesmers in particular?
Or do you feel there’s a proportionate amount of viable builds across the variety of other professions?
Mesmers in particular as this is the class I pay attention to the most, speaking of QQ threads in particular where people say ‘such and such weapon is garbage’ and ’there’s only one good build’ (currently mainly directed at shattering), or the epic cry babying about not being able to run really fast 24/7.
I still think the shatter mechanic is garbage, even with illusionary persona. My character feels stronger when I never shatter at all, and build for durable phantasms.
This is why I lol at the people who say there is no build variety. IMO there are tons of ways to build your char and none of them are invalid.
I really wish they’d sticky this thread, this is an awesome resource for anyone playing Mesmer. Much thanks to kylia for organizing everything
