If you are the top 0.5% of rangers skillwise you are probably right I wont kill you in 6 secs, but the historical fact is you will die at some point (less than 60 secs). Your “protect me/SoS” doesn’t worry me. If i was truly concerned about it at a certain part of the fight I would simply cloak/dagger off your pet till it wore off or I would just shadow refuge and watch it wear off you, after that, most of your defense is gone and I would lay down so many bleeds your non regen build would not be able to keep up. You would see me very little as I would have continual c/d off your pet, I wouldn’t even need to be close to you to bleed you to death.

I’m not saying this to be an kitten, I’m saying it because that’s simply how you beat rangers in this game as a cond thief, its Anets fault that cond thief can rip apart most rangers in secs, not my fault.

Dont get me wrong either, not trying to brag or say I am super skilled (probably should have left out personal reference but wanted to say I was speaking from experience)… just the way you describe it sounds like traited sigil of stone was used, not just regen.

Also wanted to mention that stealth doesnt do anything against rapid fire which can exceed 12k damage, especially to paper thieves, so there is more than one spec for dealing with thieves. Usually thats the only button I have to press to kitten most thieves. Edit: if you add hunters call its another 5k. How much health do most thieves have?

Thanks for all the responses. Yes, I was hitting him and frequently but im a p/d cond thief so i never see huge drops in health very fast, it was like he was out regen’ing my bleeds. on top of that he most definitely was perfectly timing condition removals, where it seemed i almost never had any on him. He was unable to be immobilized or locked down it seemed. Again, I’ll say I have never and i mean NEVER had a problem killing a ranger even the best ones, but this guy was special. I play on FC this ranger was from DH or DR and we were fighting him at the door to bay in the NPC rt beside the supply camp. If its one of you, we need to be new best friends. It was this past week if that gives you an idea.

As for my ranger I got him to 60 today and tried out the regen stuff, I see how if i load the shout deal and spam shouts i can get like 60 secs of regen, but it doesn’t pulse high enough to stay at full health like the ranger in question was. I’ll admit I don’t know a lot about this mobil play style on the ranger but i’m 100% convinced it is the ONLY viable option in WvW, A Ranger with a bow will die to me in less than 5-6 secs. but because only regen stacks in duration and not amount not sure how this guy was 1v5ing us that day. He didn’t do massive damage to me, but it was constant, and I dont think it was his pet, i usually welcome pets it makes it so much easier to cloak/dagger off them and not have to chase the ranger which then i come from stealth with 5 stacks of bleeds. i just rinse and repeat and ranger is dead very quickly. But not this guy. So even with my lack of knowledge i doubt he would have traited that heavy into beastmaster.

Im kitten ed I didnt video it or at least get his guild.

Sorry but you wont kill me in 5-6 secs and I am not regen. Traited sigil of stone ensures you dont get started until 6 seconds are gone. If I use “protect me” that means 12 seconds. Theres no way regen can counter 5 people, its not that good, not enough to counter 5-10k dps. Theres something important you are missing about that engagement.

With so much regen, its hard to believe he did much damage with sword. You basically have to accept your pet is your weapon if you go that route, since all +damage traits are in exact opposite trait locations.

As many have said… this is a roaming class. If you enjoy playing a condi bunker/regen build you’ll be fine. If you want to play anything else, you should look anywhere else. Anyone who tells you they play full berserker in WvW should be ignored outright. It’s not a serious way to play and is only good for WvW videos where you show that 1 fight in 10 against some uplevel who didn’t crater your skull into the pavement. Don’t get me wrong… it’s fun. Rapid fire into a zerg in full zerker when you’re buffed and have signets active is insanely enjoyable. When you’re 1 shot by a thief, not so much.

A zerk ranger with a long bow is not a useless thing in a zerg. If you sit around worrying about the odd time a thief hits you you’re not playing to your strengths. There are many tools to deal with thieves burst including traited signet of stone, traps, rapid fire, fear, and lately sic’em. These are all tools a zerk ranger can employ to kill a thief that will not interfere with their ability to bring full dps to bear.

I’ll admit I’m not full zerk but a thief is generally nothing but a fun diversion from the chaos I’m causing at 1500 range. 1-1 I know there are many builds that can kill me too, but thats why I dont fight fair in those cases, I have great mobility too.

Conditions DO NOT round up/down to the nearest second. If you apply 4.5 seconds of a condition only 4 ticks will happen, the tool-tips sometimes round to the nearest second however the condition applied will not.

Yep. The only “rounding” that happens is for damage ticks, where it rounds down since it needs to hit the full second to tick. The exception is if there are pre-existing conditions on a target, since all damage ticks harmonize, it might get an additional tick in. You can still be crippled, immob, etc (non-damage) for fractional periods.

I played necro up to a couple months ago, enjoyed it for wvw but its a bit overpowered for my tastes now. If you want to win 1-1 and mess with people a lot try mesmer, its a really different class in mmo’s. Where do you want to excell?

Also dont let all the complaining get to you, in wvw/pvp at least its still very playable and excells in areas.

Engineer is a very gimmicky class. I found the repetive clicking to keep swiftness up tough on my wrists, its carpal tunnel syndrome inducing. Out of the two, if you want to keep the feel of a duo I’d feel thief might synergize better, since they are both “rogue-like”. But really all classes can work together so its hard to make an argument either way.

Greatsword is a lot of fun to use, while sword is quirky and not for everybody. You’d lose some dps but in my quick testing (time to down a heavy golem) it doesnt seem that far off, it got a small buff last patch.

Axe just takes away too much dps. The main reason I would consider it is if you are stuck on an offhand weapon but want to maintain range. Also the sword has a leap which is pretty cool for escaping, I consider it essential for mobility to have at least one leap on a short cooldown.

Although the ranger needs some fixes I still feel its a solid class and I enjoy the mechanics. Besides I just got him to 80 a month or so ago so I’ve got to play for a while.

What do you feel is the biggest change we need? I’d like something done with sword to unglue us from our target, and more pet survival in zerg situations. Somehow they need to buff the pet but not so it makes us more powerful in small groups.

i fired up my trap ranger and noticed the potency trait is now +50% duration, down from +100%.

quickly logged out and switched to my guardian.

i didn’t realize traps were OP and needed nerfed.
Anet really does hate rangers.

I was totally melee until I saw how a long bow can melt stuff with the right spec (+10% damage for endurance & flanking, +5% for trait, “quickdraw” for lots of rapidfire), and at range where dps isnt interrupted by cc. Now I dont see why there would be any complaint about a ranger with a longbow in the group.

So the DAOC system is refered to as Stealth despite the fact that you can be conditionally seen while it’s active, is it not?

Haha nice try, but its because their stealth has failed at that close distance. I’ve discussed this many times over the years, at least for the person in question. There is a bit of duality there however.

I dont see them changing stealth that drastically at this point. They seem to like playing with “revealed” more than anything.

Let’s not get carried away with semantics.

However, I would welcome any discussion on why you think these changes wouldn’t be better for the Thief profession and the game as a whole.

Its not getting carried away. Since the beginning of rpgs, if someone is successfully stealthed, they are completely unseen and effectively invisible. Its the one-sided nature of the ability.

But anyway your idea is similiar to daoc, when close enough (very close) your enemy would see a transparent outline as described and could target you in a limited fashion. The distance at which you disappeared completely was determined by your stealth skill. This allowed people to hone in and attempt to engage a stealther even while stealthed, a much better system.

A person who is stealthed should not be seen, that is the point of being “stealthed”.

What I disagree with is continually disappearing after engagement. Should have kept it more like daoc, where once the fight was on its very difficult to stealth again.

Its really a minor problem, that can be rectified by deliberately seeking out skill point challenges and making up the difference. Like said you’ll eventually have every single one of them anyway, so its not so much a matter of having to choose, except in short term.

I’ve seen amateur Hl1 modders perform better AI programming feats than Anet, it’s a little embarrassing. Look at Sven Coop and how well Sniper managed to blend the movement and attack sequences of the aliens and hgrunts, it’s astounding. And these aren’t kittening professionals doing it – just passionate mod developers.

Seirously, is it asking too much from Anet to make our pets stop what they are doing, remove the aftercast delay, and just perform the F2? It’s not bloody rocket science anymore, it’s 2013. Get with the times for Christ’s sake. So many times would I have killed downed players with the finish in Tpvp if my Raven just blinded the target when I demand and not 4 seconds later.

Moa fury buff was always 50/50 for me, but never had a problem with wolf fear for some reason. Maybe because the wolf was aggroed already and the moa was passive and prioritized keeping up with me… ? Hard to say but yea, I gave up on the moa fury nuff said.

Signet of stone with the 30 marksman trait to make it affect player also is a good way to absorb the initial burst and give some breathing room. Condition removal is key.. whenever I die to a thief its because Im entangled.

Give the pets “ascended hate”. :P It worked for buffs.

Anyway, at some point they will just have to buff the pets to keep up, this makes sense. They could just give all the non-ascended gear a bonus against pets to even it out.

The idea of eagle eye working on both weapons makes some sense. If shortbow is 1200 then longbow is 1500. However….would probably be too strong on a person that uses both. Maybe switch out remorseless for a shortbow 1200 range trait ..does anyone use remorseless?? edit: I’d like to see them demote signet of the beastmaster to master too, so you could get both.

Long bow does a good amount of damage. With rapid shot im hitting well over 2.4k dps sustained. I actually prefer sword but I’m finding it too good not to use, since i dont have to worry about cc and the need to heal interrupting my damage output.

Almost all necros have the ability to transfer their conditions to their opponent on a regular basis, and the heal eats them for lunch. I’d never met a ranger I couldnt steamroll on my necro. That said, any kind of stun hurts a necro very bad.

Never played DAOC. I watched some FF gameplay, the combat seems very uhh… stationary? it doesn’t seem like it has the fluidity gw2 has (leap, dodge, etc around). I’m hoping Anet will drop an expansion to compete with all the big mmos coming out.

DAOC was good in its time…. its where a lot of the ideas in this game were conceived. People take most of it for granted now but were huge concepts at the time. I feel like a history prof now :p

How do you deal with Sword auto-attacks?

Axe damage is decent if you spec power, its about same as long bow auto (at close range) with zero bounces. Tested this lots last night. With a bounce its really good. I prefer it for zerg surfing though, when I know I’m getting that bounce. Also its always zerg lag that gets me killed with a sword due to lack of control combined with lag.

However I prefer sword for roaming. I deal with the auto-attack mainly by deselecting, or hitting #2 once only, since that puts you out of range for auto attack (hopefully), then deselect and carry on with whatever you had planned next. I wish they had a deselect hotkey. :\

They arent getting rid of pets. If anything what we need to request is a transformation of the idea into something that might make us happy.

For a start, let me suggest “spirit” pets. They get attributes like real pets etc, but they dont actually need to manifest and run around to attack, they just appear at the person and automatically get their attacks, albeit weaker than ordinary pet.

3-Server Obviously Didn't Help With Balance

3 servers is much much (x1 million) better than 2 server. WvW has survived this long for a reason. They need to tweak it however.

They tried to copy DAOC geography, but they missed an important detail. The enemy factions should come into closer conflict on entering a foreign borderland, the first keep should cause direct conflict. As it is 2 servers can easily eat up another server and barely have to fight.

Sword 1 Combo Chain :

  1. Pounce – Leap and Damage (the only leap in the chain, 250 range), 1/4s Activation time
  2. Kick – Cripple and Damage (no longer a leap) ,1/2s Activation time
  3. Slash – Pet Might and Damage, 3/4 Activation time

The chain will have same execution time (1/2 + 1/4 +3/4), but you will be rooted for only 0.25s.

Yea if anything just a leap on the first of the chain would be most useful, to get into range (then preferably just cycle between the other two). I think they didnt do that however as it would be used to bunny hop all over the place with no cooldown.

…maybe just make sword #3 a short gap closer instead of the round about thing?
(edit: actually it kind of already is, it will close a short gap… maybe a bit longer then… lol)

I think they could take off the leaps on sword autoattack #1 and it wouldnt hurt me a bit. Even when I know to dodge, wvw can be so laggy I’m totally locked in place anyway. Everything else about sword I really enjoy.

This change makes sense, since its an escape skill that doesnt work properly otherwise… and Engineers basically got this done with rocket boots, except in reverse since they got a stun break added while immob cure was already there.

I’m finding it bad for another reason… they encouraged small group play with the bloodlust points so much that there is a “zerg” of guild groups and not much for us pick up and play players, except get slaughtered by large guild groups.

I’m not much for doomsaying but I can even see they’ve started on a downward spiral with this.

What I dont like is you dont know if you hit them or not when they are stealthed. Should see a number or something.
