Stealth is the best aggro management tool in the game. An invisible ally has no further attacks launched at them. Considering this, shadow refuge can be considered a 10 second immunity to targeted attacks, affecting up to 5 people. Also in shadow arts anyone in stealth gets a 25% damage reduction.

Unless the NPCs still follow you while you’re stealthed – common in wvw. Also it doesn’t protect the other members or your party if they aren’t thieves who are traited in SA (you made it sound like it would protect everybody)

My glass cannon thief carries pugs. And not by soloing content. The defenses it provides are so strong it can keep a group of random, uncoordinated players alive through thick and thin.

If people know shadow refuge, that is. If they’re uncoordinated to start with… good luck with that.

But in general you’re right, if I will buy HoT and participate in raids I likely will still be doing so as a zerker thief (in the end I survive in wvw zergs already, don’t think that it can get worse) but all of that doesn’t mean that anet shouldn’t rework thief as they’ve proven to not care about our class by introducting reveal stuff and not giving us anything in exchange, so I don’t really count on them thinking about thief when designing new content.

Bolded, couldnt agree more, SR relies on coordination and timing; if timed wrong you’ll die while waiting to be full stealthed, this isnt helped when party member mistakes the duration of SR and steps out early.

But again that is essentially where our main party support ends (SR and Venom Share that is), scorpion wire is annoyingly still unreliable and smokescreen is our other support option to ranged counter(but considering almost everyone can do this better than we can I usually don’t use it unless its an absolute must). Stealth revives are great when they can be done but usually what originally downed the person is probably still attacking them in that downed state putting us at increased risk of death to attempt to save them. Reveal changes have also made stealth upkeep a pain so there goes our self-protection and blind isnt NEARLY as reliable as it once was.

Dont get me wrong you made some great points Blood, I too have carried parties utilizing thiefs superior evasiveness and tactical attack strategy, but of all the classes seems like Necro has passed the baton of most selfish class to us :/

Good point on Ele, but dont they typically just easy mode range attack so they don’t die fast? Unlike us(outside of P/P) they can hit HARD at range.

When I was an early thief I thought initiative was bugged because it didnt instantly replenish itself after it was depleted. I went on complaining (sending error reports) about it for a solid week or so, before a fellow thief enlightened me (to put it nicely) during a map chat where I insisted it was broken, that initiative NEVER worked like that and never would work like that…

I dont like young thief me, he was not bright…

Reaper. Nuff said

JK, but for me I liked its versatility its a light armor class with amazing survivability, decent condi output, good group support, and in general, the deathly theme of being a Necro :P

I personally run a condi Necro that I plan to make into a hybrid reaper when its introduced and love destroying mobs roaming PvE and the condi transfer/Blood Magic support I provide in fractals and other aspects of the game (saved many a person from insta-gibs with transfusion)

I’m surprised Berserker is so low. I feel that if the poll asked us to put them in rank order, it would move further up. It’s not the most exciting thing, but it’s a solid trait line that actually has synergy with the class as a whole… which is more than Tempest and Dragonhunter can say.

I think you answered your own question. Berserker may be solid elite but its essentially just another way for the class to do DPS and thus not much of a change from the core mechanics. Druid and Chronomancer play entirely different from the core classes and could have been marketed as a completely new profession, thus the excitement to play them.

Also, I haven’t looked at all of the elites but it seemed pretty apparent that the Devs realized which professions needed the most help (Ranger, Mesmer, Necro, Engineer) and thus made a conscious effort to give these classes more of a buff in the expansion relative to the other classes (Warrior, Ele, Guard).

And then the class they have no idea what to do with: Thief.

Cant wait to mess with a Hybrid Reaper!

Honestly I was cheap as hell and held back my CPU (I have an AMD-FX8350) and invested more into my video card which is a GTX 970. Run the game on all high and max outmy FPS typically at 70-80 in emptier, not super dynamic areas. During heavy player load (or general LA roaming) it can drop to a 20-30 FPS which honestly isnt to big a deal imo

May update in the future but i’m waiting for dx12 to deliver on its promise before i make up my mind

If you plan on playing anything other than GW2 on your rig, don’t waste your money on an Nvidia card right now, since they don’t actually fully support directx 12. Might as well go for a high end AMD and actually get what you are promised.

Edit: the 900 series are all DX12 ready wha…

(Suggestion)Trinity Gear

Kill.3458

What about weapons? Also, I can’t see this happening. This will be a new gear set to get. ANet have said ascended would be the last, now they have dropped legendary on us. Legendary will be your trinity gear. But minus the rune swapping.

They need gold sinks to keep gold to gem steady and to keep the economy healthy. The edition of this gear would slowly devalue runs. It would crash the market over night it would over the course of months kill the rune market, and have a knock on effect on armor. Why spend gold on armor when you have this? This in turn would devalue mats, as once you’ve made your armor, why make anything else? I can see something like this having too big of an impact on the economy in the long run to.be implemented.

did u checked the rune price from 90 % of them? they going for under 10 silver about what market u speak of? is that a game for play and have fun or a economic simulation game ? where people play the TP full day.

I see you failed to understand my point. ANet was a healthy in game economy.that means trying to keep everything to have a value over the vendor price. This armor set would end up “junking” alot of things in the long run.

Let me give a fictional example. Imagine if you will, a company comes out with a device that lets you watch all your TV, DVDs, blurays streaming services music all.one one inexpensive device. So you’d just have this one thing, no longer needing the rest so your saving space etc. now if you could get this item, why would you bother getting anything else? Getting it would be cheaper that getting all the other items individually, not to mention the free space you’ll have. In order to try and shift the other items they would need to fall in price to make them worth buying again. Or fall.in price so.much they would just be considered worthless and just be trashed.

not the first unvalued thing in game isn’kitten plus there could be a new value created for runes anytime anet want. But why put gear skills behind a paywall?

should not skill decide if u play good and not if u are willing to spend 200 gold on a rune? (extreme example but it happen with sigils)

to follow ur logic all armor repair companies in tyria should created a disaster to the economic since it went free.

I tell u play fun is more worth than peoples digital wallet.

Skill does decide, and in spvp you don;t have to spend 200 gold on anything. PvE, well that is a different story.

Gold sinks are a requirement in mmos that are designed like GW2. Nothing you say will change that fact.

People are really narrow minded its an MMO there will be always a tank and a healer u cant change that. Its an MMO there will be always mounts

u don’t own facts my friend, is it so hard to transfer the freedom of spvp to pve? what will change if I can fully focus on my pve skill ?

Calls people narrow-minded, proceeds to say how he thinks the game should work, this thread is a joke. Abandon ship

I imagine following situation will hit in HOT Raids.

10 Man Raid Need
2 guardians
1 Warrior
2 Reaper,
1 Druid,
1 Ranger
1 Mesmer
1 Cronomancer
1 Daredevil

2 Mesmer join the same time

oh one of u can go Cronomancer?
ehm cronomancer need Traveler runes and Cleric Gear ( just to show the madness)
2 Mesmer explain: I only have a full ascended gear for berserker and Soldier but I have a exotic Cleric set!

Raid leader looks to the floor ok lets roll the dice which Mesmer can stay and we wait for a Cleric Cronomancer.

(the cleric cronomancer is only optimum for this one raid boss, he is unwanted for every other encounter inside the Raid)

Err this proves literally nothing, its a loose assumption of a situation that may not likely ever happen. If party needs 1 mesmer they would sure as hell take the Chronomancer because they offer mesmer utility as well as added elite spec utility soo…

u never did high level fractals I guess ?

Yes that may be true (At 25 atm), that still doesn’t improve on your argument (using an ad hominem also doesn’t help), a Chronomancer has more utility to bring to a party than a mesmer spec on its own does, now if you were arguing DH vs bringing a support Guard maybe your argument would make a little more sense, as arguably DH bring nothing really to the party or the guardian spec as a whole outside of having a long bow.

Your gear still won’t be implemented as it is STILL a new tier, and ANet has said new tiers won’t ever be a thing, does it have a chance at becoming a feature for previous gear, maybe, but I wouldn’t count on it.

To be far:

Well our defense can get pretty high with PVT + 25% damage reduction trait on stealth + Protection from a external source (this is a raid of 10 players after all)

Point is, wth can we do without Crit% and CritDmg for the rest of the Raid tough.
C%D + 100% crit backstab?

Yea, we trade way to much damage to arguably provide decent support outside of a venom share build, and even then our raw damage just took a huge hit :/

Legendary armor is not a new tier of gear stat wise. It’s a sidegrade with benefits, but no increase in power (thus no powercreep happening).

its a grind nether less, and who says my idea has a stat increase? are u reading or u just trolling?

Edit: Your gear set does something completely unique to trinity armors, thereby a new tier, if it was implemented as a change to exotics (which will probably never happen) there’d be nothing to say on it.

So thief’s survivability is regulated to other people because we can’t mitigate damage ourselves? We already have super limited party support outside of SR and Venome share so i’m not sure what your on about?

Not Thief. EVERYBODY. If you’re not bringing healing in some form, then party wipe.

That healing can be coming from the thief. Everybody has options to self-sustain that go beyond dodges and your simple self-heal. But somebody is gonna have to actually bring those things in the future, either for themselves or for their teammates so those teammates can stay in hard hitting configurations.

The Thief is not being singled out and the Daredevil is not being singled out. “You won’t be able to dodge all the damage” is a very broad statement and it impacts every profession and party composition in particular. Because if you can’t dodge it all you’ll either need extra heals from yourself or the guy next to you. And you might want to look at where you can squeeze in a little more Toughness.

Ok but read what I just said what exactly does the thief bring that TRULY contributes to this group survivability? Stealth (primarily SR) with help from the Shadow Arts tree? Most classes can stealth/group stealth so outside of the regen we don’t bring much. If we get loaded on condi’s, we die, boss does a big unevadable move after sending out a series of AoE’s and we are somehow too far away to receive some kind of protection, we die.

The thing about thief survivability in PvE up to this point is that it is almost entirely been relegated to dodging mechanics well and timing your attacks. We’re now finding out that that will not be the case in HoT especially in Raid Content.

Your solution suggests again that the thiefs survivability hinges on the group which is true, but guess what people flub up and if a thief flubs up its usually an immediate game over for the thief…

I’ve been theorycrafting a build using Valk weapons/armor and Cavalier’s trinkets, and dropping Spite in favor of Death, for the 7/14% toughness to power conversion, and a ton more survivability. If we have decent support, we won’t need Spite for the might stacking, and the only think we’re losing out on is Close to Death. So essentially trading 20% damage to foes under 50% in exchange for boatloads more toughness, some protection, and either some condition removal or just more raw tankiness.

Still holding out on dropping Spite, the tankiness will only be useful in certain scenarios so i’m not quick to miss out on the near perm might stacks and damage I could be dishing out for needless protection

DD is Acro 2.0 because the devs thought it was cool to destroy acro so we all need DD to be more evasive which apparently will be pointless in new content as not all damage can be dodged…

So, if I understand you correctly, they are giving thief back Acro just in time for it to be ineffective? That doesn’t seem to make much sense. Why give a class with very little base survivability a core survival mechanic (as well as base an entire “new” Elite Spec around it)while knowing ahead of time that will be generally ineffective?

I mean, that takes the redesign from the realm of lazy and uncreative into the realm of spitefully and knowingly aiming for failure.

Again, I hope I am missing something, because i love this game and love thief but am having a hard time justifying buying the expansion from what i’m hearing.

Honestly, even i’m struggling with the incompetence demonstrated in our Elite spec’s design, it could certainly be a cool concept but is missing far too many features to be viable in the content that they’ve described. We have one of the lowest health pools, terrible damage mitigation/condi cleansing, our range is sub-par, stealth has become less and less unique, traps are STILL one of our most unloved utilities, and now our evasiveness isn’t all that amazing anymore

I personally will still train my thief into it just to mess around with builds, but I honestly primarily bought HoT for the story, Guild Halls, Revenant, and Reaper. It sucks that one of my favorite (and first) professions is constantly getting butchered at the mercy of the other player bases/dev faults.

Ideally there would be a power major & ferocity + condition damage minor stat set. That would give reapers the best damage, but since it doesn’t exist the strongest you can get is berserker gear + greatsword (gravedigger spam <50%) and dagger/X (>50%). Alternatively, you could opt for valkyrie armor and berserker trinkets and still have a 30%ish crit chance (80% with decimate defenses & 100% with fury) and not really lose any damage but gain some health.

tldr; obviously power

Would Sinister work well?

Not necessarily, our traits take care of most of the precision we need. With the current available stat archetypes, we are lacking an ideal set with ferocity.

That’s assuming we run those traits. I think anyone sporting Sinister gear would skip Death Perception for Dhuumfire and Chilling Force is really handy, so they may not even be running Decimate Defenses.

Ill probably play around with Sinister, Zerker, and Soldier gears still havent gotten a hands on with the Reaper yet, but from what I hear they’re survivability is high accompanied by nice damage (avoiding BWE to really go into HoT fresh)

Dont understand the obsession with trinity, in non-action combat games its boring and mundane (Tanking in a nutshell: stand, move abit, press some buttons. Healing in a nutshell: Move around a bit heal tank, heal stupid DPS’, repeat).

Yep, I can see you don’t understand it.

I’ve got a neutral stance on this. There’s just so many possibilities to make an interesting game, that you don’t have to one tried schematic, I wouldn’t mind if they re-used the concept of “tanking” and “healing” roles if they could fit it into the game’s combat style and design.

Why?
Because the role system is not the biggest contribution to how interesting structured PvE is. The encounters are. You can have interesting encounters in the behated “trinity” system. You can have boring encounters in GW2’s dynamic role system.

I don’t understand the strong feelings against it. From your (and many others’ posts) I see you’ve either no idea how a real game with such system looks like, or you just really personally dislike it so much that you have to exaggerate. Accept that there’s a lot of people that prefer it this way, and a lot that prefer the other way.

Oh please I know what tanking/healing is, as mentioned i’ve come from games where I played entirely support roles (frankly I love being a tank in games where the combat system was more action based such as DCUO, Dragon Nest, TERA). I said i’d be perfectly down with ANet including a trinity if its handled as well as it was in those games, honestly had a blast playing a tank in DCUO from past experiences.

If you noticed I said mundane support from non-action based MMO’s which honestly in a nutshell is exactly what I spoke on, its one of the reasons that despite everything I just couldn’t get into playing WoW.

“Tanking” in some way or form has been a thing since release too, just see bunkers in PVP. The reasons tanky specs aren’t used in PVE is because there is no need to hold points /defend an area until help arrives, which is the point of a bunker. Maybe in the raids some players will need to guard a specific area and hold enemies for a while, until the rest of the team can do something else.

You have never heard of a “Dedicated tank” i believe and you assume it being dull for EVERYONE is hilarious

Healing have been a thing since release. It is nothing new. Tanking on the other hand wouldn’t really work all that well in a game where the main way to survive is avoiding damage rather than soaking it up.

You have never heard of a “Dedicated healer” lmao

Dont understand the obsession with trinity, in non-action combat games its boring and mundane (Tanking in a nutshell: stand, move abit, press some buttons. Healing in a nutshell: Move around a bit heal tank, heal stupid DPS’, repeat).

Frankly id be down for trinity if it was handled as well as it is in some action combat games (TERA, Dragon Nest, Vindi, etc.) but I’m honestly not in the mood to remain in a LFG for hours waiting for someone to fulfill some role (perks of running support in most MMO’s was that I was ALWAYS needed and never had issues getting into parties.

Anyway Druid really has shaken things up on how we view classes and support capabilities but I would be so quick to believe this a sign that a dedicated trinity will be making its way into GW2 soon

It’s not a strong nerf. The vulnerability won’t really affect me. Just cleanse it with something else or send it to a foe etc.

BTW: Wrong sub forum. Move it to the necro threads.

Cleanse maybe, but that would involve shrouded removal which may end up being a waste. ITs an utter waste to attempt to transfer it as it lasts 4 seconds and by doing so in an escape situation you retain combat status much longer (having to face the opponent to transfe, etc.)

While doubtful to them appearing on other continents (ESPECIALLY xenophobic Cantha), very high chance we’ll encounter sylvari of other tree’s under the control of Mordy as they are his minions after all.

Its safe to assume the “darkness” in the Dream was actually Mordy’s original hold on the Sylvari of the Pale tree

Ugh... is it RNG or... I swear I'm hexed.

Never seen a precursor in all my play time, BUT RNGesus has been faithful and i’ve landed a Teq Hoard, Zoija Wep Box, and 2 Ascended SoldierArmor chests.

Remain stout in your disbelief/belief in the power of the RNG my friends

Sorry to burst your bubble, but for every buff condition Guardian is getting, classes with real condition builds are getting buffed at least twice as hard.

Looks At Necro Lolz, in their case nerfed twice as hard xD

As with the gem store, there’s always that one guy willing to spends hundreds of dollars.
For every person who’s not buying HoT (like me) there’s probably 3 people who couldn’t care any less what HoT adds or doesn’t add to the game, how bad or good it is, etc.

The sad truth about most gamers I’m this Era, the same gamers also enjoy complaining when the game the pre-purchase doesn’t meet their expectations/the expectations it set for itself
