Two Months Old Customer Felt Betrayed Already

Kill.3458

I’ve been playing since release pretty much, paying $120 NZD for the game (not even deluxe I had to buy gems for the upgrade) and with the amount of hours I’ve played and the fun I’ve had all I can say is money well spent. Was pretty excited finding out that an expansion is finally coming and originally thinking it’d be $60-80 NZD for me and I was prepared to pay that much. With the pre-purchase info out I was pretty disappointed that they couldn’t at least add a slot but I had one ready just in case. As for the base game being “free” to new members who pre-purchase HoT, im completely fine with like c’mon new players, more people to play with they added that as an incentive so more people would start playing. I do feel for people that purchased the base game recently just because anet said it was a requirement to play HoT and then later giving it for free with an expansion purchase but they made a mistake, $10 suck it up. For the amount of gameplay you get with no sub fee I dont see why people are kittening about the price.

Did you really just call the FAQ problem a “mistake”, a “mistake” gets fixed immediately and typically they address the community on the “mistake”. They dont use the “mistake” to advertise for months under a different banner then quietly sweep it under the rug when they change their minds, thats called false advertising, its hardly a simple “mistake”.

Click the link below the comment box that says “Buy GW2 today”, where does it send you. Using other retailers to try to strengthen your argument actually does the opposite. ANet has since said there are NO plans to sell the core game and expansion separately. So what does this mean for other retailers?

As time goes on they’ll all be selling GW2 HoT and its separate editions as the new base game….

This is true. It is also true that I will not buy a bundle which includes software I already own.

I wholeheartedly and with you on this one, I merely stated the obvious to the ignorant people trying to use outside retailers as justification for ANets actions.

This thread is so corny it made me cringe. But I’m glad you are happy, you are in the minority I think however.

Lol. You know the majority of the players are just logged into the game and not on the forms right?

The fact that its spreading is reason enough that a VERY large portion of the GW2 community is ticked off at this shoddy marketing on ANets part. The fact that the issue is still a hot topic though its already been 4 days speaks volumes of this

For the final time the price isnt the issue, the issue resides in the value of the purchase. If ANet feels that the expansion is worth $50 id like to see what exactly makes it worth $50 before making an investment.

Exactly. We need to know:
a) what “Challenging Group Content” means (something instanced for guilds I hope)
b) how many maps will HoT have (I think we need at least 10 new maps, more if they are all SW sized)
c) how lengthy will the story of HoT be (at least the same as the entire LS2, hopefully longer)
d) obviously the rest of the specializations

People call HoT “just LS3”, I disagree, I call it an expanded Feature Pack, because we don’t know much about the length of the actual story yet.

The second fault in value being that clearly existing players are getting the short end of the stick, not to mention that if you purchased in the days before the FAQ change on 05/16/15 you were basically lied to. No matter what way you look at it we are being FORCED to repurchase the base game without getting an extra copy of the core game (HoT has essentially replaced the core game as its the only offering of GW2 being marketed by ANet on their site).

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think they are already giving refunds for those who purchased the game during the sales? At least, they’ve done it in the past, people who bought the game just before a sale got refunds so it makes sense to do it now too.

A. Something was added to the standard edition (*cough*Char. Slot/800 gems) to make up for the fact that existing players will not be getting a second copy of the core game.

There is a slight problem with adding new things to the standard edition. Players who already pre-purchased did so without knowing the extra character slot will be in the standard edition, which will make the Deluxe pointless. Those few extras it gives aren’t worth 25$. I believe they didn’t add an extra character slot to the Standard edition in order to have 3 packages. They could’ve easily had 2 packages only, Standard (with a char slot) and a Deluxe with the extras and 2000 gems at 75$. They added the “extra” package in the middle and increased gems to 4000 to create a third package, a package that shouldn’t exist.

I think a good way to reward loyalty is to give an extra character slot to all veteran players on their 3rd birthday (maybe only if they pre-purchased HoT?). I suspect HoT will be released either close to the 3rd birthday of the game, or at least after it, I don’t think it will be released sooner, so adding an extra character slot to veteran players will be in time for HoT and won’t change any of the current packages

Hmm that’s a very sound solution for the char. slot issue, but the title ‘veteran’ is something I personally define as someone with 1- 2 years experience in the game (joine during release, 2013/2014), so the birthday gift would have to be pretty universal or else the issue of fairness would rise again.

Also the refund only counts if you bought the game within 60 days and ANet was the retailer, it also may accompany the total termination of your current account. So it’s quite a scary solution unless you haven’t done much in the game since your purchase (1st week of purchase?)

Could we please get "raids."

Theirs no point arguing with White Knights, they see the issue as black and white and ultimately support ANet despite the clearly questionable actions.

Many of the complaints probably would have ceased to exist if:
A. Something was added to the standard edition (*cough*Char. Slot/800 gems) to make up for the fact that existing players will not be getting a second copy of the core game.

B. Releasing more info on what exactly the expansion includes, not ambiguous rumors as to what exactly we will be getting.

I for one will hold onto my money until ANet address the community on the issue. Also for the love of god, stop comparing this game to P2P models or saying the price is simply justified by the fact this is B2P…

To those who are saying they are buying the base game again, what evidence do you actually have for this. If Anet already decided to sell the expansion for $50 and included the base game in the package, you are buying nothing.

Suppose that instead of “including” it in the price of HoT, Anet just said the base game is now free. That’s it. Suppose Anet give a $10 coupon to everyone to bought hot for the base game, and permanently set the price of the base game to $10.

You’re making an assumption that you’re paying extra for something…but you have no evidence for it. Three times already, Anet has sold the base game for $10. For years they’ve been talking about not dividing the playerbase. Why do you you believe this isn’t just another attempt to keep the playerbase together?

The only way you can say you’re paying for the base game again, is if you can prove somehow that Anet is actually charging for it. All you really have is your own belief, because there’s no evidence for it.

Anet is removing the barrier to entry many games suffer. Do you know if you buy the current WoW expansion you get all the previous expansions without paying for them…as long as you pony up $15 a month.

This is a much better deal. But again, what evidence do you have that you’re paying extra for something, rather than it’s just being included for free?

Because the Vanilla game is not being sold seperately from the HoT purchase, and no dont try to argue that point by pointing me to other sellers, cause without a doubt it will disappear there as well. WoW is how many years old, with how many levels? To answer that. its a 10-year-old game with 100 levels, now tell me how its NOT a smart business move on Blizzard to offer new players the previous expansions outside of Warlords of Draenor. The answer is you can’t, getting new players in a game as old and established as WoW is hard enough, getting them to pay each month even moreso, this decision removes a HUGE paywall that would have intimidated new buyers.

Now here’s the fun part Vanilla WoW wasnt immediately devalued to $0 as a result of this decision, you still need it to get access to the content in the expansions.

On the contrary, GW2 has been out for about 2 1/2 years, its Vanilla game has as of 06/16/2015 been devalued to $0 under the banner that it is a free inclusion to the expansion. This is where ANets error lies, why was the base game suddenly devalued to zero and then bundled “for free” with the expansion, why was the FAQ changed after months of advertising under a different banner that the core game was needed for the expansion (you know the system WoW employs).

Effectively to enjoy GW2 you HAVE to purchase this bundle hence the belief that you are repurchasing the base game.

I buy HoT. Some people pay over 50€ games like witcher 3 and they won’t even play it over 6k hours.

The Witcher 3 is a masterpiece of a game in just about every way. From a story telling perspective to the game play and how the world is designed and how you interact with it and it’s technical aspects.

Besides that a big difference between The Witcher 3 and GW2 is that GW2 is an mmo which is designed to suck up as much of your time and money as possible. The Witcher is designed to deliver a story that has a definite end. Unlike mmos.

To say the witcher 3 is not worth the price is to say that you do not enjoy video games.

My only complaint with the Witcher 3 is the combat system, even though i despise Shadows of Mordor, its combat was really nice and responsive. Otherwise for the money Witcher 3 was a GREAT purchase.

As you said you cant compare standalone games to MMO’s as different expectations are held depending on the platform being argued.

Kill.3458

Erm, that’s not why many people are upset.

I expected kitten-$99 price tag. I budgeted for that. What’s kittening me off is that it includes the base game — I have no choice but to buy the base game — there is no other version.

This means that I, being a LOYAL customer, bought the base game, and then pay another $50 for the expansion. John Doe, however, pays $50 and gets both base and expansion. Which means because I am a loyal customer, I pay more.

I would have no problem paying the $99 if, instead of the base game, it was removed in favor of some sort of small kickback. Or, if there was a version of the expansion that was slightly cheaper/discounted if you already owned the base game.

Look at the Sims franchise. You CAN buy a base game+expansion combo, but it’s more expensive than the expansion alone.

Look at hundreds and hundreds of DLC on many, many other games. The DLC/Expansion/extras always (in my experience) have a separate, cheaper version without the base game. OR, provide some sort of special kickback for those already who own it.

This War of Mine gave me, who had bought the beta early access, the soundtrack free but made new players buy it. Or, FTL gave me the expanded edition since I already owned the game, but all new buyers had to buy it separately.

Over and over again, games make sure to make their old player base feels as valued as the new. Right now, that’s not how I feel. Right now i feel like Anet thumbed their nose at the old players (who are the ones who likely funded much of this expansion) and are ignoring us in favor of the new.

It isn’t the price tag. It’s the principle of treating your old player base like dirt. If you’re going to incentivize new players, you should do the same for those who have been with you and supporting you all this time.

So then it is the cost? As a veteran of GW2 I understand that a mmo needs an active player base and that active player base needs new players. As a veteran I am glad they are including the base game for the new people as it makes it much easier for them to jump into the game. Look at the bigger picture and dare I say it, stop being so selfish.

I swear its the same story with blind ANet fanboyism.

People are complaining that we are literally buying the base game again! We were lied to by ANet through their FAQ for MONTHS telling us that the base game was required in order to play the expansion, to add insult to injury they advertised past sales of the game under this banner.

We’re complaining to see content that justifies the $50 price tag that ANet deems worthy of this expac, of which we know little and yet they want us to hand over our money. Money isn’t the issue here it’s the practices ANet has been employing to get that money.

How can’t you blatantly see that vets or really anyone that bought the game prior to the FAQ change/date Pre-Purchase rolled out are getting the cheap end of the deal. No matter what way ANet would like to spin it the inclusion of the base game isn’t “free” its merely being added to the cost of the expansion and being marketed as such when really it’s now implied that HoT is the new base game.

Blind optimism never helped anyone or improved on anything please don’t be so ignorant to the situation.

Veteran player here to say Thank You Anet!

Consumer bias, he won’t change his mind and will continue to blindly defend his purchase in an attempt to block out the naysayers whose assertions actually hold weight.

This entire fiasco could have been avoided, but the marketing committee decided to play a game of russian roulette with their game. Yea theyve said that SW/DT is how they want maps to look like in the future, small with concentrated event activity. Funny enough I enjoy the larger maps its too bad that end game maps lack the size of some maps when leveling (Mount Maelstrom/Lornar’s Pass).

What dev team thinks its wise to hold back content info but release a price/purchasing bundles before people actually knowing the full extent of the content they will be getting. When EotN released back in the day we were fully aware of what was included and felt the price was more than justified for what people were getting.

From what i’ve seen of HoT it looks more to be a $30 feature pack than an actual expansion.

Eye of the north was $39.99 when it was first released.

Thanks for that, I will say that I was late to jump in on EotN, felt I didn’t need it since I already enjoyed Prophecies and Nightfall so much, but for what it’s worth the launch price still felt justified considering ANet had already released 3 great campaigns filled to the brim with content beforehand.

EotN was completely optional (unlike HoT where no doubt Vanilla players will miss out on Living Story updates) loaded with ample story content and huge new portions of the map to explore, something HoT already lacks ( its 1 map split into 3 zones or biomes) perhaps it will make up for it with future LS updates but for what is currently known, the current price still just doesn’t feel worthwhile.

The only regulatory mechanism for business practices that are not outright illegal is the consumer. If the consumer doesn’t react in kind, the market doesn’t regulate. Everything is working as market mechanisms intend.

I’m a consumer, but I don’t react like the people on this forum.

I quietly put back whatever I was looking at buying, and walk away.

GW1’s HotN was $20, it included 3 new parts of the map to explore, the introduction of 2 new races, a plethora of new dungeons and enemies, a great original story, and of course plenty of new items. The price felt justified for the content provided

GW2’s HoT from what’s been seen includes: Magumma wilds opening up (how much of it is opening up is still unknown), Masteries, Elite Spec’s, Guild Halls, a new class, more story (length unknown), revamped precursor system, and new items.

I honestly feel that warrants a $20-$30 dollar price tag, not the cost of the base game. I’d probably happily pay that much if a whole new continent were opening up (Cantha/Elona) but in HoT’s current state I’ll gladly hold on to my money

the only people who don’t have issues with her and insult anyone who complains about Mai Trrin, are people who play bunkers with blocks… if you don’t play such class you might as well disbann group

i really hate how they keep making content for warriors/guards lately… mai trin mechanics in itself are just completely against this game philosophy:
- you were supposed to be able to play any class, with Mai you can’t
- dodging in time supposed to be rewarding, well in her case you can’t dodge her one shot combo
- her model is so small and animations are so minimal, if you run with pet classes or just have flashy animations you just can’t see anything she does and can’t dodge her aoe

Frankly I managed to solo her for a solid 5 min on my thief, so evades really arent the problem (well except for the cannon phase and your a slow class with no movement skills). The problem is her obscenely high amount of damage, that kitten ed shield and its stacks, and of course her small character frame. Honestly the fight isn’t that bad but one shot damage on nearly every aspect of the fight just isnt fun and is plain ridiculous.

I also agree, the Heavy armor meta is getting annoying, this fight is ALOT easier if a guardian is on the team.

I remember that sword ….

How I HATE it still.

A Mesmer carrying that sword is hit hard. Loosing 2x Clones, 2x Phantasms (Remember, no weapon swap either), and being stuck in melee without Blurred Frenzy, Chaos Armor, or Chaos Storm? Nightmarish, and made me glad the sword got stuck in Trahearne’s hands. Thats not even considering if they allow Dodge Clones to work with it or not, as I can’t recall if it did at the moment.
(Though I wouldn’t mind having the Skin for Sylvari racial specific weapon though.)

My basic thoughts when carrying and trying to use it was …

“No WONDER why everyone else who carried the blade before me DIED!”

Trahearne would’ve of added to the many “favored” Firstborn death toll if we hadn’t been put on full on guard duty…

My sylvari is a thief by the name Forenzo, I think why I chose this name was because he was born in the cycle of night and I was in the mindset that as a thief, I live for the night where my abilities truly are at their best.

Something along the lines of “Forever of the night” thus forenzo was born

Yep shadow, spot on, you sire do know everything about this GAME, you were definitely there when the developers talked of the plans for Wintersday, and your definitely not trying to show off your “genius” on the forums rather than in real.life where it could be of some minor “benefit” others.

You my friend are nothing more but a troll, and though you may not believe so, you have shown yourself to be a socially inept individual whom lacks the ability to know when he’s wrong.

Hope ES is all you dreamed it to be, Good Night sir and good riddance

Shadow I’m not sure if you noticed this but in the post previous to Wesley’s you called anyone who disagrees with you stupid.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that sounds like placing yourself on a high horse, that your opinion is somehow right rendering all else obsolete and worthy of ridicule.

Quote: “Having the other races…”

That’s the problem its always about ASURAS.

I have heard no content involvement or update about Sylvaries, Charr, Norn, or Humans.

Its always “Asura” this and “Asura” that. That’s not lore, its just choosing a single race to base the content on.

So the Mad King was secretly an Asura and the clocktower was his greatest achievement? The karka are related to the asura only born with freakish faces, tendencies to spit poison, and armored plating which makes them a pain in the kitten to kill.

No, the only thing “asura” about those events were NPCS, one who sought knowledge about the deceased HUMAN king and another who was just an annoying pain in the kitten…

OP calm down, I agree with Gil that its just an asura seeking international respect and glory. Also lets not forget this is 500 years in the future… a lot of things can change in 500 years.
