Skirmishing has many things : traps/bleed, precision, but it’s mostly focused on Weapon Swap, which gives Fury (and other things).
I went full blown Axe trait + SotW + Vicious Quarry to see how much ferocity I could get and why not use Rune of Rage… Went to 270% with a 100% Critical Chance. Of course, on glass ranger.
Very bursty indeed. Of course with some shaving, changes and working around, add Signet of the Hunt and see people get bursted.
Best skill in the game for 5 years, SoR, just got obliterated. I’ve lost any desire to play for a while.
What? Signet of Renewal just got a major buff. The passive condi clear never procced when you needed it, and the active just killed your pet.
People are being dramatic over the 1 condition clear on a 10 sec ICD…
This new SoR is way better : shorter cooldown and your pet won’t die from getting all the condis.
In PvP, it opens up the slot SotW took to generate Astral Force. Now you’ll only need SoR.
The most serious nerf in this patch is that you can not get 3 might from “Zephyr’s Speed”.
For the ranger that is difficult to get Might, 3 might from “Zephyr ’s Speed” was valuable.
It was the main combo of shout ranger to amplify that might by the synergy of Fortifying Bond and “We Heal As One!” And to get 9 might.
In other words, this nerf means 270power has decreased from the shout ranger.
This nerf will have a major impact on PvP and WvW.
lol, what ? Did I miss a /s ? It’s even easier for Ranger to stack 25 might now. Major Impact for pitiful 9 might !?
Predator’s Instinct and Companion’s Might got buffed. I’ll take a traited WK Zephyr’s Speed over 3 might on swap any day.
Good PvP buff coming from Stoneform, Signet of Renewal and Signet of the Hunt.
SotP still bad. I don’t even know which Ultimate to get anymore, but will take SotP, because Stability.
Drakes still not fixed. Will do Tail Swipe, then to forever do Bite.
Overall, I’m ok with the patch. Did I expect more ? Yes, of course.
2 weird things : SotW and Winter’s Bite buff but leaving Splitblade behind ?
Yep, I was wondering what was wrong with my F2 not working.
1) Being able to be ’’petless’’
2) More flexibility and choices
3) Major buff to melee ranger playstyle
MH Dagger is meh, so are Stances. Beastmode is the savior of the spec.
TBH, making them throwable again would be just fine to make them viable. Not 600 range, at least 900. Nowadays, people fart AoE everywhere, so I don’t get their arguments that they didn’t want to make traps become ’’nades’’.
Also, buff to Frost Trap.
We’re still missing info on a 4th stance, aren’t we? Realization I had.
And you made me realise that. It’s Moa Stance, no info.
Maybe we will get a Stun Breaker somewhere. I wouldn’t be surprised it’s support/defensive oriented.
Most likely to be https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sharpen_Spines.
Same argument tho. Gotta use the elite spec to use it.
I was initially perturbed about not getting the pet F2 skills, but upon further discussion I think it would be too hard to balance, because a lot of them would need to be adjusted to be player-centric.
I agree, I’m a little upset by it, but understand why they made it that way. At least, it won’t invalidate the pets and we will still to use them for their F2 abilities.
I was already suspecting it when they announced it and I got even more suspicious with the hidden bar video of Aurora Peachy.
When the Warthog merges with the character, you don’t see Forage, you only see Maul, Brutal Charge and another one. Let’s call the last one, the BeastSkill for now.
Then, I’m reading the new post about Soulbeast on Reddit : https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/6r21vn/soulbeast_skills_mechanics/. It says :
- Beastmode: Lasts indefinitely, 10s CD to switch “modes”. Gain a leafy aura while merged, doesn’t seem to vary with pet type. F1-F3 become abilities that vary with pet. Only saw a few examples (see below).
- Treant pet (new) seems to grant healing abilities and a lightning storm
- Flower pet (new) has ranged condi abilities, and a PBAoE bleed + vuln + damage
Since we don’t know the new pets skills, we can’t speculate on it, but… :
- Krytan Hound gets cripple leap (5s cripple/10s CD), knockdown leap (2s KD / 20s CD), and a big splashy AoE stomp (2k damage PBAoE / 25s CD).
So they use Crippling Leap and Brutal Charge then a skill that is not their F2 ability. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Juvenile_Krytan_Drakehound
- Warthog gets knockdown leap, bleed, and a PBAoE bleed + vuln + damage (same as 3rd ability on flower)
Gets Maul and Brutal Charge and a shared ability with Flower Pet. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Juvenile_Warthog
So, no, what they say in the official videos is not 100% true. It’s more a white lie. ‘’When the Soulbeast merges with their pet, they gain its unique abilities, as well as the abilities of its archetype’’.
No wonder they didn’t go in depth and details with Soulbeast, because it’s not what we think it should be with their wording. Disappointing isn’t it ?
When you use ‘’unique abilities’’ it means their F2 and when you say ’’archetype’’ it means the skill they share, which could be Maul or Brutal Charge when it comes to the Porcine family. Apparently, it’s not.
The ‘’unique abilities’’ seems to be just new skills they created and that will be shared with some pets.

Sure, we can make the comparison, but Berserker mode needs to be charged. As for Beast Mode, you can stay on it forever.
Dead or Alive, if you know a Warrior has it, you just don’t down him in Berserker Mode. As for Ranger, there’s no counter, but to keep doing damage.
Looks fair to me. Ranger gets a less annoying version, but less effective.
How many weapon skills are on the dagger?
Looks like a chain of 4 on the AA, a first.
And then the lightning blast, and the leap, and the double slice thing
The Lightning Blast (Call Lightning) is a Beast Mode skill, I believe. It’s at 1200 range.
The Leap (Instinctive Engage) and the Double Slice (Double Arc) seems to be either #2 or #3.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
How many weapon skills are on the dagger?
Looks like a chain of 4 on the AA, a first.
I hope dagger is kinda power based but the spec itself is capable of being played hybrid. I always wanted poison ranger and boooooii i am gonna get it, it seems.
Just think about the Spiders wannabe Thief’s Venom + Poison Gas !
Justine OP Devourers will get a play with Poisonous Cloud and Retreat. Use 2 Devourers, get 2 Retreats (Evades) ! Now, not even adding Evades from SB and Lightning Reflexes !
Stealthy LB Ranger ? Use Jaguar and Siamoth !
EDIT : I just watched Aurora Peachy video again closely and we don’t seem to get the F2. I see MAUL and BRUTAL CHARGE icons from the Warthog, but not Forage when you get in Beast Mode.
The third skill has the same icons on all the other pet she merged with after. Maybe the ICON is a place holder, but it is shown that you get a ’’Beast’’ skill from the third skill, from the new plant pet : https://puu.sh/wYXNZ/455f975904.png.
I guess we will really know how it all works next weekend…
(edited by Krispera.5087)
- Source(1:15)
Notice he press F5 enter “beast mode” and it’s 10 sec CD. Which means in and out play style. Also how the weapons skills bar changes(you can see the icons being changed).
That only means you can’t go in, out and in within 10 seconds. It says nothing about how long it lasts.
Yep, that’s what I think too. It has a cooldown of 10 secs after getting out of it, I suppose. It’s how Necro’s DS/RS works.
Now, what we need to know is do the Pet and the Character get a shared cooldown on the skills they share, or not. Or will you need to get out of the Merge to swap pet ? This will change the playstyle. Of course, if someone wants to sit in one pet merge, they can too.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
Ranger videos were so quick. I’m not sold to the Dagger and Stances, they look simple and boring.
Now, the merging with pet opens up SO MANY POSSIBILITIES (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/List_of_pet_skills). If I understand it right, you’ll be able to use the F2 and also the Third Skill (ex : Tail Swipe from the Drake).
Condi Ranger with condi AoE poison field from Spiders ? Power Ranger with Spike Barrage ? Furious Pounce with Remorseless ?
Bunny Thumper! GW1 people would remember them… Just give us a hammer and let us go wild!
I was actually disappointed with the next elite spec weapon. That would have fit so well if it was Hammer with a Pet/Shaman oriented mechanic, which the name seems to tell.
Now I can only see the weapon of the spec to be Condition or Sword 2.0.
Some 5% damage buff. Like Crossfire getting 5% power damage buff.
No pet changes.
No skills or traits changes.
In all seriousness, it’s most likely the last balance patch before expansion. Most of time, in all other games, it means LOTS of change, but it’s ANet so I expect nothing,
Sure.
Or use Clarion Bond.
To put that in perspective, the player hitbox is 30 units in diameter, so the margin of error is small.
Wow, I didn’t realise that ! It’s pretty bad indeed.
Increasing the radius to 60 (double) or 90 (triple) would suffice, but I’d also propose it be altered to a free-aim projectile that does not travel along the ground. I’d love to use it to pull people off walls and cliffs.
I totally agree with the radius increase and not travelling along the ground ! I think most ’’bugs’’ come from because it travels along the ground instead of be a free-aim projectile.
Spear of Justice can do it, why can’t this one too ? I mean, if you think about it Spear of Justice is a more reliable pull than Path of Scar. It’s also unblockable…
I would like to see something like phoenix or envoy of exuberance.
Both are unblockable and not projectiles too ! It’s the reason why they come back to the player without being lost in the way.
Giving it a 240 radius on landing like Phoenix and Envoy of Exuberance would be nice, indeed.
Maybe give it a mini Daze instead of Pull if too OP with unblockable. That way, it would work more easily with Moment of Clarity.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
The pre-blade of Phantasmal Berserker from the Mesmer is way more reliable than Path of Scars. It actually hits and come back, unscathed.
I think it’s because the blade is unblockable and also not a projectile. It doesn’t get blocked and it’s not getting lost from a projectile reflect or from the pathing.
An update on Path of Scars pathing would be nice… Would making it unblockable OP ?
Never thought I’d see the day that people complain about GS…
You guys got baited.
I just want the pulsing fury and reduced cooldown back. Instant would be nice.
I mostly come back to Ranger, because it’s familiar and it has access to mostly everything, except boon removal and good aoes. Range ? Melee ? Tanking ? Condi ? Good condi clears ? Good stun breakers ? Mobility ? All yes.
Yes, pets need a complete rework. Nobody use Devourers, except Justine . I feel they are even worse when you don’t trait in Beastmastery. Completely unreliable, except Smokescale that can port to enemies.
I do have to say tho, like Prysin said, Ranger is easy. When I need something more engaging I go on my engi, mesmer or ele. As for now, I enjoy more engi.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
Well, as the outnumbered “Buff” doesn’t offer any benefits in a fight, I don’t really see a Problem with that
You’re absolutely right ! Shows my lack of knowledge about WvW mechanics. My bad !
And yes. Dmg-wise MM or BM would definetly give me a boost, but often i’ll find myself in situations where i value the (passive) defensive boost of NM more, simply because
a) in the group we run i am the target most of the time and
b) it complements a more reckless style of play in even numbered Situations
So as you said, personal preference. x)
I totally understand the thoughts behind your build. It’s a well balanced one. It reminds be of the old Regen Ranger tank/bunker before HoT.
At the same time, Troll Unguent and passive Regeneration you get from traits are enough to cover your CA generation without using Staff. Which is refreshing to see in the sea of people making videos of them camping staff with a Bristleback doing the job.
I’m craving Ranger videos. Thank you for your contribution Cayline/Hepatolith !
Only thing I noticed, is that 3/4 of the video you have the Outnumbered buff. Overall, good fights and rotations.
Don’t you think you will be better with Marksmanship or Beastmastery over Nature Magic ? Marksmanship for LB trait and unblockable pet on Swap ?
Wilderness Knowledge already covers your condi clear, so Evasive Purity can become redundant. Instinctive Reaction can be replaced by a more reliable Zephyr’s Speed and Protective Ward by Wilting Strike (minus Protection). At the end, I do understand it’s a personal choice.
I see you want to have a higher boon duration of Regeneration and Protection, with all the synergies coming from other traits.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
Not really in need of training, but always fun to watch PvP videos when I’m not at home
Yes, Gladomer is one of them, but he’s mostly roaming in WvW. I do like and watch his videos. There is one Asura player with S/Wh Staff and also the Charr player with GS that I like to watch, which I forgot their names.
I just prefer to look sPvP.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
Hello, I like to watch PvP videos so I can get better as a player.
I always have problems when I try to look for good up to date PvP videos for ranger. In comparison, when you try to find for ele, thief and mesmer, you find plenty of good ones.
For rangers, Balouga is a pretty good one and informative, but I can’t seem to find something of this level or quality.
Most of time, I find videos with people camping Staff for 20 mins, use questionable utilities (such as Signet of the Hunt, Spirit of Nature and Glyph of Unity), never use their pets (perma stowed), never use their pet f2, never swap their pet, 2 people cap, people just showing their whole games and not just segments, etc.
Any suggestions ?
Ranger LB is more reliable and do more damage than Guardian LB in most of situations. Solar Beam can do okay-ish damage on Power set, but you aren’t supposed to sit on Staff.
While in CA and soloing, you mostly just use 3 and 4 for heals, then you get out. Don’t sit in CA and do 1 and 2.
Like Fluffball suggested, be sure to always have a Stun Break, a Condi Clear and maybe an Immunity. You can go pretty far by just using Signet of Renewal and Signet of Stone.
As for pets, change to HoT pets as soon as possible : Smokescale, Bristleback, Electric Wyvern or Tiger.
Brown Bear would be better than Arcturus.
I really have no problems with Ranger. While doing my elite specs on all my characters, Ranger was the easiest, because you have easy access to CC to break bars in HoT. Would be really curious to see your traits.
Ok, people really need to stop suggesting going Magi for someone new and for Open PvE. Not only he will hit like a wet noodle, he won’t do far with that soloing PvE.
CA healing coefficient got nerfed many time. You either need to invest a lot in healing power or don’t.
You aren’t supposed to sit on Staff to do damage. You sit on Staff to get your CA bar up, to heal, for mobility or to go through reflects.
For the rest, get on a Power or Condi set. Power preferably if you’re new. Do you use your pet efficiently ? You should post your build so we can tell you what is wrong.
What can help you greatly is to watch people PvP/WvW Roaming with Druid on YouTube.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
lol Justine.
More seriously tho, Staff 2 and 4 need to be looked at. So boring. 4 is just terrible.
Mainhand axe is a condition weapon… not this weird hybrid weapon Anet keeps trying to push on us.
You think Axe is only a condi weapon because of bleed from Splitblade and Winter’s Bite. Meanwhile, the AA always been power focused and even more with the trait.
The problem is that SB is a 900 range condi weapon and there is no 900 range power weapon. Same with melee range, you only have Sword as a MH for power. I guess their only way to make it mesh together is to make Axe hybrid. Ranged power AA (Ricochet), Melee condi (Splitbade) and both (Winter’s Bite).
.At least in PvP and WvW, no one uses MH axe for its autoattack. In fact, there are only a handful of weapons in the game that are used mainly for their autoattacks but MH axe isn’t one. The most damaging skill on MH axe is Splitblade and it’s used for the bleeds, not the physical damage.
Shortbow autoattack is also very effective with Sharpened Edges, Sigil of Earth, and Sharpening Stone. These give SB the potential to apply 4 stacks of bleed with each shot.
Alright, just playing the Devil’s advocate here, because I know very well Power MH Axe is not used in meta builds.
On paper, Ricochet can be the highest power AA of Ranger weapon skills. Yes, even more than 1000 range Long Range Shot of LB and Sword AA. You can get 25 might easily with MH Axe + Nature Magic + Warhorn. It’s an alternative to Longbow, it just lacks utility (knockback, stealth, etc.), that’s why it’s not used.
The nerf to SotP (indirectly Remorseless, which could be used with Power Axe) made people use it even less (which, again, was not that used). Yes, you could stack 25 Vulnerability in a instant on someone while having 25 might on yourself and an unblockable 25 might pet. After all, a niche build that got nerfed, so nobody heard of it.
So, it means on MH Axe, you have the Ranger’s highest power AA and also a high condi damage skill (Splitblade).
And yes, as I said, SB is the best condi weapon to use, followed by Axe (mostly instances).
The buffs, even if small, are welcomed. Ranger Axes still need buffs, but I think it’s on the good direction. If only they could make Path of Scar more reliable and with a bigger radius, then do something about Whirling Defense stationary problems.
Oh for kittens sake its worse then I thought. Winter’s Bite is only buffed in PvP too. Tool tip doesn’t show it but I tested on golems.
Anet can kitten off, massive slap in the face.
LOL. I was also confused why it was telling ‘’This skill is unique per game mode’’ and suspected it. Also, suspected the tooltip wasn’t updated.
At the end, nothing worth of mention for Ranger. Those pitiful won’t change anything for Ranger Axe in PvP.
Back to your LB, Staff, S/D, GS bois and gals. Nothing to see here.
I don’t understand why Splitblade buff in PvP only ? I guess it will most likely to come on PvE later…
Also, Winter’s Bite doesn’t seem to have been buffed. Maybe the damage was so low I didn’t notice any changes ? But, I think it’s not updated.
Give the Bounce back please and buff OH Axe.
Tested Ricochet and it seems that it bounces from any directions. Exemple, if your target is in front of you, it can bounce to a target behind you. I don’t believe it was this way before, if someone can confirm it too…

Beastly Warden + Clarion Bond is the way to secure a rez or stomp.
The last part—- Beastly Warden and Clarion Bond securing a rez or a stomp.
I understand why Beastly Warden would help, but why Clarion Bond?
Why assassins signet over berserkers?
Clarion Bond is just Call of the Wild on Swap and it makes the pet unblockable for 4 seconds. Sometimes people have Aegis or other stuff on. It’s just to be sure to land it.
It also helps in other situations and not just rez/stomp. You don’t need to use both either. Sending an unblockable Smokescale with Smoke Assault (it uses Takedown after, all in those 4 secs) or Wolf with Brutal Charge (which are skills they will use right after swapping). Then chain with a F2’d Beastly Warden, then PBS… lol
Blasting Sublime Conversion or Rejuvenating Tides (It’s the only way for the Ranger to self blast it, not counting unreliable pet skills). Trying to run away ? Getting chased and need that extra heal ? Pop F5, Rejuvenating Tides, Swap Pet -> Healing Blast, send the unblockable pet to Knockdown or Beastly Warden the chaser.
Terrifying Howl has a radius of 600 and Beastly Warden only of 240, so it helps a lot in a team fight to have an unblockable Terrifying Howl with Clarion Bond.
Assassin is just a personal decision. It just gives more Precisions, so Critical Chance. Nothing wrong with Berserker, I just like seeing crits. The difference is not that big between them. Also, I use Marauder. It’s really about how I feel, but Marauder is more balanced. I love playing with Assassin, but I know very well that Marauder will give me more breathing room.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
Trappers Expertise:
Traps are throwable again, decrease CD. no other effect.
Man, if they make Traps throw-able again, I’m becoming full time condi ranger.
Most useless trait in Ranger is probably Most Dangerous Game. Just remove it and make something new at this point. Nobody will use it over Quickdraw or LoyF.
Solo, sometimes Duo. Gold T3-Plat T1, keeps moving up and down.
Staff + LB. Assassin or Mender (Depends of the team combination. If too support oriented (Tempest and another Druid), I move to Assassin). Rune of the Soldier.
Utilities : WHaO, SoR, SotW or Protect me, SoS, SotP.
Staff : Annulment, Escape.
LB : Seperation, Opportunity.
Smokescale and Wolf.
Marksmanship : 3-1-3
Beastmastery : 3-1(or 3)-1
Druid : 1-1-3
Beastly Warden + Clarion Bond is the way to secure a rez or stomp.
A buff need to happen to one or both, for sure. They are so plain and boring.
I wouldn’t mind a stun break on SotW, because it fits. You stun break and get stability. As for SotP, it should be instant now that it’s nerfed.
Normaly, 80.
DS’s tigers can only be tamed after winning Meta.
Do the last LS, which you are supposed to have it unlocked, and you should be able to tame one out of the submarine. (Ring of Fire, Draconis Mons, Mariner Landing)
I am planning on making him a Healer for Raids and Fracs, as Viper’s is stupidly expensive and hard to get. Which build (Specs, Stats and Weapons) should I use?
For Open World !? Simply just go Shout Power/Berserker Ranger with LB/GS or LB/Staff. Look up the Metabattle one for Conquest, which should be close enough. Change things as you wish. That’s what I use for Open World : http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQJATRnUqA9rg1CCOsActgFCBDureWbrPfhaQubp0FAqalMtxA (+ Runes of the Trooper/Soldier + Beserker/Assassin set)
You shouldn’t have problems with breaking CC bar at all. When you get used to Ranger and get more money, then you should worry about being a healer or condi ranger. Meanwhile, don’t bother.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
With the quickness ’’buff’’ to Sword trait and ’’buff’’ to Axe trait that can be used on offhand now, S/A is a good option. Dagger has a mini evade that can be used with Sword trait to triggers Evade/Quickness more often.
I still have hard time manoeuvring Sword with all the back and forth. I just wish Sword 2 was a single leap (Monarch Leap) and to move Hornet Sting (Backward evade leap) after Serpent’s Strike, but that’s just me…
So, at the end of the day I just end up using GS because it has an easy leap and a block.
Boon eater pet.
Maybe a corrupted-ish from the Dragonbrand (Chaos/Ethereal theme)
One: SOTP becomes instant cast and breaks stun. Same cooldown. Same current affects. Further nerfing would simply make this change pointless.
Second. SOTP gains a MUCH shorter cooldown. Like im talking 30-40 seconds when traited shorter. Same Current affects and boon durations. This makes it more likely we can use our elite again during the fight if we do somehow manage to survive the initial lockdown.
1) Not bad idea, it would be more useful than it is now.
2) It was on a shorter cooldown before they increased its cooldown when it was on the pulsing version. They didn’t even bother to change the cooldown to 60s untraited like it was before. I agree, it should be even lower considering it’s just a minor buff.
It was also direct nerf to the pet burst/damage potential. To make things worse, they nerfed Smoke Assault of the Smokescale, which I mostly used Remorseless/SotP with.
I don’t really get how it was supposed to be hard to wait till SotP runs out (10 secs!) to do your CC ? Do people expect to always CC without looking what buff the target has ? Isn’t it the point of an ELITE to have great effects ? Now it is not elite worthy at all.
Other ’’transformation’’ such as Rampage and Lich Form didn’t even get their Stability pulsing removed, while they do something more special than give might on each attack…
No CONSISTENCY at all
(edited by Krispera.5087)
Rezzing my own thread.
Can someone explain me why :
1) Thief SB got buffed and Ranger Axe still doesn’t have its bounce back ?
- Trick Shot: Increased number of bounces to 3. Now deals 25% increased damage to poisoned foes.
- Detonate Cluster: Increased number of bombs to 4.
- Choking Gas: Increased damage by 200%. This skill now briefly dazes foes with 5 or more stacks of poison every pulse. The same foe cannot be dazed more than once every second.
2) Splitblade and Winter’s Bite damage is not increased like Choking Gas ?
I don’t care if you keep saying those skills are condi, it’s not an excuse to do terrible damage. One blade of Splitblade do 34 damage (170/5). Winter’s Bite is not spammable like Choking Gas (Unblockable) and still under its damage ?
3) Warrior Axe got a buff on many skills, but not Ranger MH and OH ?
- Axe Mastery: Now gives 300 bonus ferocity as long as you have at least one axe equipped. (Same as us, minus the 50 ferocity difference)
- Throw Axe: Increased damage by 27%. (Oh, they Throw Axes harder than Rangers now)
- Dual Strike: No longer gives fury. Now gives quickness for 1.5 seconds per strike that hits. (Easier than to trait sword and evade to triggers Quickness)
- Buff to AA and Burst/Primal : Not cited.
(edited by Krispera.5087)
Once again a good sheet to show how useless Bearbows are. A lynx or tiger literally outdamages those useless ursans by 3-4.
At least now those Bearbows seem to become Wyvernbows after getting their first ’’dragon’’. A DPS and CC increase !
Now, if only they could stop using the Fire Wyvern (badbonfireversion) and use the Electric (CC god) one instead…
Oh, and how about a boost to our traps? Ours need to be on par with Dragon Hunter traps.
lol @ Frost Trap and Spike Trap. Frost Trap should be the equivalent of Procession of Blades (The latter do nearly 4x the damage of Frost Trap). Spike Trap should also pulse. Aren’t Spike a real physical thing ? Then why is it doing such a bad damage.
This way, you have 2 condi traps and 2 power traps.
