If you can pick any skill set for your guardian to go into the middle of 15 people that doesn’t work. Because I can do it with my “regular” pvp set. I don’t need a special set to do it.

I’m not saying guardians don’t have any advantages, but I disagree with saying the -only- advantage elementalists have over guardians is aoe. Even if that were true, aoe is still a huge advantage heh.

I’m saying you can’t saying you can’t base your chances of “moving up” or “winning” on one person. If a good commander leaves, someone else has to step up. If that’s the other commanders already there, or a new one whatever. You can’t blame someone for not logging in.

Supposedly it’s being fixed today (or whenever the big patch is) from what I read before, but I’m not holding my breath. Last time they tried to fix it made things 10x worse.

It’s playable right now, but it’s still really annoying when thieves take a good 5-6 seconds to appear on your screen. By that time they can already stealth again.

Portal bombing is also an issue because of this.

Condition damage does ignore armor. However there are many ways to get rid of conditions. So it’s best not to throw all your stats into condition damage, but having some of it is good. It’s kind of up to you to decide how much you’d rather do damage over time, or straight up damage.

Over a month makes them non-existent. Mara, Owl, and Mia are the only dedicated commanders I’ve encountered that actually spoke in /team to rally the troops. Losing just one of them crippled our chances of making tier 1.

So you’re blaming the chance of making tier 1 on ONE commander. What do you want them to do? Log in 24/7? You know people do have lives…..

By that statement you’re actually saying how good of a commander Mara is if it’s only possible to go to tier 1 with her there. It’s also kind of insulting to the other commanders who are still there.

I really don’t understand you’re logic, or why you think it’s “funny” or related to being voted a good commander and then “disappearing”. People stop playing for all kinds of reasons. You’re jumping at shadows.

What’s the big deal about tier 1 anyway? It’s pretty obvious rankings don’t mean a whole lot in this game since transferring is still done easily enough. So your bragging rights really don’t mean a whole lot in the end anyway.

That game was so much fun, though it was really short.

What I’d really love for them to do is give RTL a super speed buff. So you it speeds up your character but you still have control of it. You now have control over where it goes. It would take a while to get used to, but it would be incredible.

But…I’d be happy if the “stun” bugs were fixed regardless.

That’s kind of the point of playing the game isn’t it? Because you enjoy the class? If you don’t enjoy it why are you playing it?

Sometimes I really wonder about people.

Guardians have like nothing for ranged combat. Guardians can’t escape as well as D/D elementalist. Guardians don’t have as good group heals as elementalist. Guardians don’t have knockdowns (except the pet, which no one uses). Guardians don’t really good a good form of swiftness. They have it, but it’s not that great.

If you go into the middle of 15 people with a guardian, you’re going to get owned. Elementalist can live just fine provided you have some cooldowns up. There are plenty of things an ele can do that most other classes cannot.

Aoe is a big deal in WvW. How is that not a huge difference? I’m baffled.

Anyways, I’m probably done responding to posts like that. People will continue to moan regardless. Some small buffs aren’t going to change that. It’s because of the way the core class is designed. Cheers.

I can 2v1 pretty easily. I can 3v1 with some luck and depending on the classes involved.

I can port into the middle of a zerg, unleash aoes in the middle of them, down 4 people and get out. I can rain down aoe from walls. I can heal allies. I have the best mobility in the game. I’m pretty much as tough as a guardian.

Wait….what’s the problem again? I think the difficulty is rewarding me just fine.

I wanted to play a warrior. I almost always play some sort of melee / tank in most MMOS. But it turns out I don’t like the warrior here. Too much of the same 3 buttons over and over. So I switched to elementalist and I love it.

So should I be crying that I don’t like to play my warrior?

You know this happens in basically every single video game that has multiple classes right? Especially MMOs. There’s always a class that is “hard mode” and one that is “easy mode”.

Asura or Human ele?

Asura have the best animations in the game hands down. However, their armor designs leave a lot to be desired imo, and the humans just get way better options as far as looks go. Weapons and armor are more noticable on a human so if you want to show off human is the way to go.

Asura does have the added benefit of being smaller in WvW but it’s not a game-changer or anything.

Help me improve my gameplay :)

Ah I thought you were like…level 1 and just starting out.

If you’re just wandering around maps and killing stuff then I would say most people go with power, precision, and crit damage or beserker damage. However this leaves you very squishy and you can easily die. If you want more survivability throw in some vitality and toughness.

As for builds, I’m not really an expert on staff builds. I mostly stick with dagger / dagger 98% of the time. Fire traits are kind of lackluster atm and don’t seem to be quite as useful as the others, however it still gives you +power which is good for dps. Going into water will increase your survivability by a lot. There’s also some good traits in arcane such as the one that gives you boons each time you switch elements. But if you’re not switching very much that one wont get much use.

The good news is, it’s pretty cheap (3 silver I think?) to go back to a trainer and change your traits so I would just experiement with some different things and see what you like. You can switch the traits around in each line whenever you want, you just have to pay to move your “points” around.

Even if you go 0 into fire, that doesn’t mean you can’t use that attument you just wont get the added +power and perks of that particular trait line.

Bug fixes. Ride the lightning needs to stop stunning me. Grasping earth one I haven’t really noticed in a while except when I try to use it on dolyaks.

Out of weapon combat swap would be lovely.

Start out slow. Since this is your first mmo there’s going to be a lot to learn.

Your 1 is your standard auto attack in fire. 2 is a ground target aoe. If you have troubles aiming it, when you attack a monster, drop it at your feet. That way when they get to you they’ll take damage. Then use #4 to back away or use evade. Meteor shower is best for groups, but you could do the same thing by dropping it over your character. Just be careful because it has a long cast time.

After you get used to the game a little bit, you’re going to want to learn how your other attuments work and get used to switching between them. Water is your heals and slows. Earth is your dot damage, cripples, reflect shield, and root. Air is your movement and aoe stun field. So you will rotate between them based on the needs of the fight.

Honestly for a first timer, I would suggest vitality and power. Vitality will give you health which will enable you to stay alive a bit longer. Power and condition damage are both good, but it’ll be a lot easier for you to die. Just my opinion though.

Make friends with the trading post. Save up your coin and you can buy things cheap off the trading post. What you do is search for items you want. Then select to bid on them. Not buy straight up unless the price is cheap enough already. The trading post allows you to upgrade your equipment easily if you need it, but dont worry -too- much about it. I’d say at least upgrade everything once every 10 levels.

Salvage white armors / weapons with a salvage kit. Sell green / blue weapons / armor to a merchant (unless you can use them of course). Later on when you get yellows / exotics hang onto those. You can try selling some of the greens on the trading post, but most of them are put up for merchant value so it’s generally not worth it.

You can buy gear from the “hearts” you do on the maps. This is an easy way to get free gear that only costs “karma” which is gotten from doing dynamic events. So after you complete a heart quest make sure you talk to the heart person and check the list of items they offer.

This allows you to talk to the other players in your area, in my experience most people are usually willing to answer questions about gameplay

Couple basic tips. In the top right corner of your inventory “deposit all collectibles” is your friend. This will send all your crafting stuff to your bank. And also the combine bags or whatever its called. This will make it so you have one giant bag instead of seperate ones. I would invest in some bags fairly early, 8 slots will last you quite a while. Someone can make them or you can probably get them off the trading post for about 3 silver.

You act like every single class in every game are balanced equally. They’re not. They never will be, the best you can do is get them relatively close.

We can go round and round with this. Some classes will always have a higher skill cap than others. Druids were horrible at the beginning of WoW. Hardly anyone played them, but I liked it because it required more attention than other classes. Later on druids got a bunch of bug fixes and some buffs, but the fact remains that the people who were terrible at the class before were still terrible and struggled. (This is before everything became easy mode)

I’m not against some small buffs / small bug fixes. Mostly bug fixes. But if you think getting buffs is going to change your ability to play the class. You’re in for a surprise……

I didn’t make the game. Anet chose to make elementalists more complex than the other classes. In every game, there’s always a class which takes more effort and research to make it work than others. In this game, well it’s elementalist. If you don’t like it play something else.

Truly. And people usually call those classes “unbalanced” or “underpowered”. Which in turn results in class adjustments to bring in on par with the rest. Or, what, a mediocre player isn’t allowed to enjoy the game? If I’m not uberpro, I have to settle for a class I don’t like, because the one I like is reserved for the best only? How does that even make sense?!

I know plenty of elementalists who are mediocre players who enjoy the game. Yeah they die a lot more than me but they dont come to the forums crying about everything thing they ask questions and get better or they just shrug it off and keep playing. If you spent as much time learning your class as posting on the forums you might do a little better. So elementalist is a little harder? Big deal? You can still enjoy the game just fine. Or by “enjoy the game” did you mean “faceroll it”.

If you like mesmer then go for it. Yes elementalists get owned when glass cannon. So do mesmers against any decent opponent. The only mesmers who last more than 10 or 15 seconds (assuming you dont run into culling issues when they go invis and what not) against a good D/D elementalist are the ones who dont go glass cannon.

The problem is people have this super tunnel vision about doing massive dps when it’s actually better to build towards outlasting your opponents. You go from doing okay in 1v1s to taking on 2 and 3 people at once when you stop building glass cannon. But whatever, go with your glass cannon stuff, I’ll continue to pull off stuff no other class can even come close to.

Glass cannon mesmers dont get immediatly owned by ‘decent’ people what the hell are you talking about. When people think of an ele they see big flaming balls of fire and explosions and lightning. High damage. Well currently that playstyle is on a Mesmer. Confusing opponents is for Mesmers right? Well as a D/D dagger i am totally confusing people by jumping, shooting, and blasting everywhere.

Saying a mesmer dies in 10 seconds is kittening ridiculous. Hell, MOA lasts 10 seconds. They can stealth for up to 8 seconds. 2 seconds immunity every 8 seconds. Distortion. It’s people like you who keep parroting the ‘ele is just so seriously deep, dude’ mantra that are bad to the class. You said it a millions times while we already know this, we get it, great job. Now raise your pants back up realise that glass cannon ele’s dont deserve to be this crappy when a mesmer takes a dump on everyone’s dog and mother. And yes, i play BOTH, so i actually know what im talking about. No, my ele doesnt have a kittening berserkers amulet. Nobody’s been wearing one for ages, keep up.

Your average glass cannon mesmer DOES get owned by decent players, simply because they know all the mesmer tactics( double daze chain-staff n2 teleport-decoy-swap clone combo etc etc)

I simply don’t want a ripetion of GW1 , where eles have been reduced to a level where even an hamster could appear as a “pro” ele by spamming 1-2-3 earth KD combo, what happenes was that suddenly GW1 population was composed up by eles for like 70% ….earth eles with zero skills but able to spamm 1-2-3 on the keyboard

I dont know, if you look at the synergy of say D/D I have a hard time thinking they didn’t mean for you to attument switch all the time.

If they didn’t mean for it to be complex, I’d be really surprised. And if they were to ever “nerf” the complexity of it, I’d probably quit the game. Just personal opinion.

Sure the concept is simple, but rotating through all of your attuments, and having every ability memorized so that you know which one you want to use? They had to know people would do this.

Elementalist is harder because it’s not your typical mage class. The best thing I could compare it to is like a druid from WoW. You get some healing, you get some defense. you get some offense. It’s a jack of all trades. People who used all their forms and abilities shined above the rest. People who sat in cat form and spammed 2 generally didn’t get quite as good of results.

Bottom line is, the class is the way it is. Unless they make some huge changes it will remain that way. If you don’t like it fine. Play another class.

Elementalist are harder because you have twice as many abilities to use as other classes.

One of the reasons people probably aren’t liking their elementalists is staff. Everyone wanted to be a staff elementlist. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with staff, but for pve in general it’s awkward solo. It’s much easier to go scepter or dagger imo but it requires a much different playstyle than a “generic mage” in most games.

I’m glad they did make it complex, because otherwise I would have quit playing a while ago. Other classes are so boring being limited to 2 “weapon sets”. The majority of those skills aren’t real exciting either.

Edit – See Warrior tanks in WoW. Very few people were any good at it (before Lich King when it became faceroll. You could push random buttons and -maybe- get through a dungeon. After that expect hate mail from your healer. Really good warriors were few. PvP for a warrior was much like elementalist is now, lots of stance dancing and using all your skills while rogues just sit there and mash sinister strike or whatever. Or better yet……huntards. Talk about facerolling….

If you don’t want the “harder and more complex” class, then choose something else, or just admit that you’re not playing it to its full potential.

The PVE cries are ridiculous. ANY class is easy in pve in this game. It’s just not auto attack and go afk on an elementalist like warrior / guardian and that’s what people don’t like. I don’t want to think about my skills, I just wan’t to push the 1 button and get loot.

I like bloodlust. Some condition damage is good, but having most of your stats into condition damage isn’t very good either. But if you don’t have any condition damage, then some might be good.

If u don’t bother to check your conquests in case there’s someone hiding you deserve to lose it. I do agree that “portal bombing” is lame due culling issues but then you could ban all thief’s from w3 as well. Stop calling nerf’s due to your own shortcomings.

The rendering bug fix that will come down soon will negate the “portal bombing” strat. It will also but a stop to the permastealth thieves. I highly expect a drastic decline in thief leveling at that point.

I really hope that this comes true. Sooooooooooo many thieves are going to get their hides kicked when they realize how much they’ve been abusing the render bug. I’ll believe it when I see it though.

Yup ranger. Because there are no “skilled” rangers yet because they don’t exist. You will get owned in duels as a ranger because the class just isn’t that good right now except to keep people off walls.

While I expect so of the many elementalist bugs to get fixed, I highly doubt they’re just going to throw a huge damage increase our way like many people want. Until they rework the whole elementalist this will remain the high skill cap class (or unless they rework all the others…yeah right). Some people will be good at it. Most people will be really bad at it because it’s 4x more complex than all the other classes.

Some of them are great. Others such as “I can out run a centaur!” get old when it’s every 30 seconds. However, I believe there was a post saying they were looking into decreasing the frequency of some of these.

Every class has broken traits. Elementalist is hardly the only one. OP is complaining about dying in 3 hits. That’s not a class problem, that’s a user problem. If you want to go play warrior or guardian by all means go do it. But don’t come to the elementalist forums and complain about builds that work, or that -you- can’t make the build work.

Thidrank was amazing. My favorite times in DaoC was in that BG. I spent so much time there…….

Eternal Borderlands is pretty cramped. Needs to be bigger.

Aoe cap limit on player abilities needs to be gotten rid of as soon as they fix culling issues.

Or they could get rid of the downed state in pvp, but I dont ever see that one happening.

There’s no incentive for a “smaller” size group. You get a smaller group together and then you just get run over by the zerg. You can occasionally do some 3v6 or something like that. But whenever you’re outnumbered if you’re opponents are even close to average skill it’s going to be really hard.

Rangers are pretty much a free kill right now for most classes. Supposedly a bunch of changes are coming on the 15th though for them.

No one cares if you want to play a guardian or a warrior. If you want to do so, then do it! More power to you. But coming to the elementalist forums and making a post like the OP did just smells of not even trying. You picked the most complex class in the game, deal with it.

Yes there are bugs. Yes there needs to be some changes, but you can still own it up provided you are skilled enough. If you dont want to put in the effort, then you wont like this class.

Mist form is your friend for stomping and finishing downed enemies. One of the best tools for it, however it does have a lengthy cooldown.

Confusion can be gotten rid of easily with water attument. Moa does suck, but I’ve never seen a mesmer be able to kill me in the time that it takes to wear off, then you just turn around and kill them, assuming they dont have back-up.

There’s one guardian build that will own you if you’re not careful. It has average dps, but high healing. However, there is a counter to that. If you’re a human you can use Reaper of Grenth (about the only time it’s good) for the -33% healing and that pretty much shuts it down.

Thieves are only annoying because of rendering issues.

I’ve met two engineers that had some scary burst with rifle, but it was something I wasn’t expecting so it kind of caught me off guard because most engineers are a free kill.

The hardest counter to D/D elementalist though?

Ride the lightning bug :P

If you’re only interested in Map Completion, I would just find a server that controls the majority of the maps and go there. There’s usually at least a few match-ups that are really lop sided. That’s if you have no interest in WvW.

If you have some interest in WvW then I don’t think people care if you’re trying to get map completion while pvp’ing as long as you help out every now and then.

They should have left world completion out of pvp imo.

Elementalists are a high skill cap class. Therefore you will run into people who will either own you (because they’ve practiced a lot), or they’ll be a joke. D/D elementalist can kill a mesmer pretty easily as long as they watch for confusion and cure it instantly.

And yeah, a lot of fights start out horrible for me because RTL decides to just stun me for 5 seconds. That’s always a good start :P

As others have said, burst / beserker gear is fine for regular pve, but -most- people need some vitality for dungeons. 16k was a good number for me, but then I’m D/D so you might be able to get away with a little less, but anything less than 15k and you’re going to run into problems imo.

WvW the way it was meant to be:

- walls and doors harder to break takes more time to break through giving the defenders a chance to actually get there
- secondary entry points to keeps this makes it more strategic for siege equipment placement and troops positioning
- only siege weapons can damage doors and walls stops players from zerging doors and walls
- remove AOE 5 player dmg cap from siege weapons, makes siege weapons something to fear again
- remove orange sword they promote zerging removing these swords forces servers to have defensive strategies, player communication, scouting parties and less zerging. It also places a vital importance on having lookouts at key map locations to convey enemy troop movement.

1. Walls are fine. Un-upgraded doors could use a slight buff in the number of HP they have.

2. Dont understand the second one, keeps already have multiple ways into them.

3. Pointless, if you can’t defend a door from enemies not using siege weaponry then something’s wrong or the door was already severely damaged to begin with.

4. Players have aoe cap on their abilities but no on siege weaponry, not sure what you’re trying to accomplish here.

5. And this would solve what exactly? Zerging would still happen, except now you lose your upgraded keeps in a matter of minutes when the enemy force portals in 4 golems and takes down your reinforced doors in a matter of 1 minute or so. Except now, you have even LESS time to defend. Weren’t you complaining about defenders not being able to get there in time and you want LESS time to defend things?

Having scouts is one thing, requiring someone to stand around at certain locations because they have to = boring.

I will agree with someone else’s post however. Get rid of the stupid downed state. However, culling issues and thief burst would have to be adjusted for this to happen.

Downed state promotes sloppy play. You can go in with superior numbers, lose a ton of people to downed state, and get them all back up. If there were no downed state smaller groups would have a much greater chance at thinning out the zerg enabling them to actually win the fight. You would also have a much higher chance to defend things as you could do the same at a siege.

It still exists pretty bad especially with thieves. It’s “suppose” to be fixed on the 15th, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

This has nothing to do with people’s machines.

You will get owned against any good thief with staff. If you’re not having troubles then you’re facing reaaaaally bad thieves. Staff is horrible at dueling.

Teleport will get you out of the ranger immobilize. Cleaning fire works. Or if you’re D/D switchign to water and using #5 will get rid of the majority of your conditions.

Anyways, S/D and D/D does fine, for scepter you just have to lead your targets a bit and it’s sometimes a bit trickier to aim. D/D does better single target damage than staff on moving targets (which most of the time this is the case). It’s just more risky, you have to know what you’re doing.

But use whatever you enjoy or gets the job done. Dungeons are easy enough it really doesn’t make a whole lot of difference what you use.

The ones I see doing this are embarrassed they lost the majority of the time.

One guy I found 3 times. First time he didn’t alt-f4 till he got downed. Second time he alt-f4’d at half health. 3rd time just he just straight up alt f4’d when he saw me (he was in combat, so couldn’t have been WP). Was pretty hilarious.

It’s a sterotype, but most of them are thieves that get their egos all bruised up when they lose to an elementalist.

Beginning racial stories are great. Full of personality, humor, each race has a unique story.

After you join an order the stories really tank hard. Helping a faction is a cool idea, but it ends up being bland and generic. Then it gets even worse once you get to the “main” story. Your hero starts spouting off generic, over the top, dramatic lines along with Traherne. All personality between the races are erased and everyone becomes the same.

Another huge let down was your personality choice at the beginning. Which does exactly…..nothing. Choices in story consist of do mission A or mission B. Once or twice there was actually a cool decision like save the boy or save the town, but very infrequent.

Contested raid mob in WvW would be a bad idea unfortunately. If you want to look at a disaster example just look at the Grub. Hey guys, let’s go kill grub even though we’re losing all our keeps! Yeah, not a fan.

Now on the other hand, if you could summon a boss mob to help you take over keeps, something akin to what they had in Alterac Valley, then that would be cool. Or perhaps an army of elite npcs to help you take over Stonemist. Right now the Ogres, Hyleks, etc don’t really do a whole lot. I’d buff them up some more so they actually mean something and are effective making you want to fight over them. But not so overpowered that you -have- to have them.

In April 2002 Mythic introduced a new dungeon. The ‘new’ idea behind this dungeon is the fact that only one realm at a time is owner of the dungeon and can enter through the homeland and the relic-keeps. It is the realm who holds the most of the available rvr-keeps. Whenever another realm conquers more forts the entrance for the opposing realms will be closed but other realm-members still in the dungeon can remain and will fight to survive against monsters and realm-opponents.

The thing was pretty huge, you had to travel quite a ways to get to the other team’s side and there were 3 “sides” and then a big raid in the deep parts of it. You weren’t kicked out when the other side took control, and there was a message when the other team took it, so you knew that you could be in for a fight soon. It made things more exciting.

It was a good place to make money, and everyone wanted the armor / weapons from there because they looked cool and had good stats. So people always wanted to control it. There was also a raid at the end which was a ton of exp and loot.

Had some great fights in there, whenever it would switch sides. However at other times it was just a matter of ganking someone when they got low on health from a mob. But that was the price you paid for being in there. More so if your did not control it.

But like I said, it’d be hard to balance.

Semi-survivable dual dagger ele build?

Believe what you want. First you say “double dagger is useless in dungeons”. You’re the one that brought up Lupicus. I never said it was optimal either, I said it could be done. WvW defending can mean a whole lot more than just sitting on a tower. I’m sorry if you get burst down in 5 seconds, but I rarely do.

Again you’re putting words into my mouth. I never said I use it all the time for every dungeon path or defense. I said I have done it on every path. That doesn’t mean I do it all the time. Reading comprehension much? I also mentioned that if there’s a zerg outside I will switch to staff. Again that whole reading thing. But if there’s only like 10-15 people you bet I will go outside the walls and wreck some havoc with D/D.

Staff you will get picked apart on the walls just as much as going out with d/d. You were assuming good opponents there right? Because they’re not going to let you sit up top and bombard to your heart’s delight either.

Where did I say D/D was useless in dungeons. I said if he plans to do them he should bring a staff because, and I quote “there are certain situations that you must use a ranged weapon for.” Not every situation. Not even every situation of every dungeon. But certain situations, of which lupicus is one of the easiest examples to point to. You’re the one who claimed he used D/D for every boss of every path (which means you were playing sub-par and were dragging down your team for quite a few bosses)

I play in the tier 1 bracket. I held off 30 JQ people without defensive siege with only 6 other people on the wall with me. I assure you, nuking people from the wall is cake compared to jumping down. Even in lower tier brackets, hopping down into 15 people usually means death, just about everyone has some form of immobilize or cripple. And 15 people can wreck you if ~4 of them are paying attention.

Correction. I held off “30 idiots” with 6 people not using siege. If that’s the tier 1 bracket, then gee that must be some “awesome” pvp.

Anyways, done with this post. I offered advice. Take it or leave it, makes no difference to me.
