Magic Find is a Myth

This, exactly this. I’d love it if Magic find worked on chests and or bags like it does in SW. To me it’s now just an annoyance salvaging material and having all this luck essence taking up space. Or it would be nice if you know, you completed an event and say if you didn’t get an exotic or precursor, you’re chances for getting one would go up…..would need refinement obviously, but seems like it’d reward people more. Could make it so repeating an event doesn’t increase your chances if you already did it for the day.

Yup. There are definitely things they could do to make it more enjoyable. One method would be tokens. You get enough of a particular kind of token and then you can get an item.

But I think it’s a game of psychology more than anything. They don’t want people to think about the long-term grind. They just want them to keep coming back for the next chance at a shiny from the roll of a die. Like gambling.

I assume one reason Anet chooses not to tell us the numbers is that if they change them we would scream holy kittens.

One of Anet’s main jobs is to control the economy. They do this for many reasons but the main is to continue to promote the use of the Gem Store. It’s the answer to most “why” questions. Why doesn’t Magic Find effect chests and bags, because they can predict the increase in market gold without having a wildcard MF factor.

Could be, could be.

Gaming forums never fail to blow my mind with the audacity of people. If you think he’s complaining or trolling, go re-read the OP.

He basically said the current system frustrates him (not frustrates the community, frustrates him) and requested a simple change, so that it would be less frustrating for him.

Some people proposed existing solutions to his problem and he said he doesn’t want to go that route. That should be end of story. Instead, people are getting kitteny with him because he won’t use their solutions?? Give me a break.

Magic Find is a Myth

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Labjax.2465

It’s not a myth. It’s just that people see numbers like 100% or 300% and (understandably) think that because those numbers are big, the effect will be big.

But the effect is not proportionate to what your mind imagines when it sees the big numbers. The effect is subtle and mostly noticeable with a program only the devs would have access to that allows you to calculate a massive amount of loot over a simulated length of time.

In any given day, unless you are daily killing and looting thousands of mobs, it’s unlikely you’ll get anywhere near the number needed to see an accurate sample.

The one part I don’t understand is the thing about it supposedly not affecting bags and if so, why. Especially in SW, where just about everything comes in bags or chests, but it also gives a big MF boost? There must be an explanation on that that I missed somewhere along the line. Cause it seems like a big prank when you stop and think about it.

HoT release and raiding would be a good time to make this kind of change. IMO, if they were to remove the laurel cost off of the recipes, they should keep the gold part where it is and consider it a minor nerf to what’s in the way of making ascended gear.

World completion is the worst.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Labjax.2465

It’s definitely easier now that they’ve got the little “go here” suggestion arrow thingy that you can use. I didn’t have that the first time I did map completion. I had to actually look at the map and make decisions as to where to go. Now I can basically let the automated thing tell me where to go and let my mind wander.

It’s a lot more relaxing now.

Still tedious as kitten, but at least it’s not “farm 250 vials of powerful blood, or 3450430430234235 gold.” Plus there’s the map reward, which is always nice.

If I could change anything about map completion, my first thought would be: Don’t count the POIs that are inside of an instance. It’s a pain if you are, for example, a human and you need to track down Charr POIs inside the Charr home in Black Citadel. If you really want to keep them, let people unlock the POI by going to the door or something.

Instanced map completion is just weird and kind of annoying.

You know, I was thinking about this the other day and last night I got into a T6 Dry Top through LFG with ease. I had been thinking “surely Dry Top is dead by now,” but there are a lot of people still running it, probably for the fossils and somewhat for the love of the map design.

The new areas will be alluring at first, but people will trickle back to whatever gives them the rewards they’re looking for.

What Anet should keep in mind for the future more than anything is this: Beware of creating too many maps with rewards that’ll keep people coming back to them near indefinitely (such as Teq for chance of weapon or Dry Top for chance of fossils to make DT weapons). Too many maps with a design like that means people will splinter more and more over time, as their priorities differ for which rewards they want to go for.

Right now, I don’t think it’s even close to an issue, but it could be become one down the line.

HoT Price Feedback + Base game included [merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Labjax.2465

Labjax.2465

The point of the OP is:

Why do original players have to pay $50 TWICE to get what new players will get come expansion??

It IS an issue!

Original Players: $50 for GW2 + $50 for Xpac
New Players: $50 for Xpac/ INCLUDES Original Core Game

Not fair at all to those who bough the game originally.
A Free character Slot is NOT worth the extra $50 at all.

They don’t though? I’m pretty sure it’s been said that putting the core game in with the xpac is, in terms of “price,” a gift to new players. As in, they are selling the xpac to everyone for $50 base pre-order price. If you are totally new, you get the base game wrapped up inside with HoT.

In a sense, yes, it comes out to overall less money to spend for the new player than the guy who bought GW2 at full retail price on release and is now buying HoT pre-order. But the new player doesn’t get any of the stuff that existing players have already received by being around for a while, such as Living Story (the new player can buy access to LS, afaik, but they don’t get it for free).

So basically, new player gets core game for free, but doesn’t get all of the content that happened while the core game was released (not for free anyway). In the end, the new player might be saving some money, but if you factor in content, the vets are still far ahead on having reaped the benefits of being around.

It’s a fine distinction. Mostly psychological.

c) pigeonhole people with a stereotypical profession look.

This, basically. For instance, who says a Necromancer needs to look like a minion from Hell? That’s your preferred interpretation of a Necromancer look, which is quite personal. Granted, a lot of people go for that look. My 2 Necromancers fit that stereotype, but the idea of making one that looks nothing like what you’d expect has wandered around in my head for a while now (or I might just change the appearance and skins of one of them completely; I tend to do that at times). Profession based skins limit creativity and force a certain look on you. Besides, there’s no accounting for taste, so let people look horribly mismatched if they choose to. I’ve seen my fair share of those (from my perspective) and it always gives me a good laugh, or at the least a hearty chuckle.

Yep. One of the looks I’ve done on my necro was a celestial priestly thing, where she’s supposed to appear alluring and innocent on the outside, but then there’s the dark shroud part that comes out in battle.

You can really go for whatever interpretation of the class and weapons that you want. That’s one of the things I like about the extensive dyes and wardrobe in this game.

Halloween

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Labjax.2465

Maybe they wanted people to have a chance to get tons of exp on their level 80s while playing the holiday content and have the ability to progress their Tyrian Mastery tracks. If they have the Holliday before the expansion, all those levels you gain on a level 80 in the Labyrinth are worthless.

Possibly. Though if Labyrinth returns, you can bet peoples’ attention is going to be split between stuff like that and the new areas for HoT.

So I dunno. Doesn’t seem like the most prudent decision ever.

More likely, it’s that they have something HoT-themed they want to release with Halloween, so Halloween has to come either day-of HoT or after, and after would put it way into the end of the month.

Or how bout this, since it’d fit with Mordy related stuff: Giant vines that you have to tame through a group event. You can then use them (until the event resets) to travel across large expanses of forest in a train-like fashion (the vines would move you on their own). And you can let go and start gliding at any time, too.

That would be a cool integration, I think.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Labjax.2465

As far as I can tell, no, it is not P2W. It’s just Pay to Participate, in expansion content.

If, after the dust has settled, certain elite specs are required to be the best in your class in any given content, then I can see a pretty good argument for P2W. But even then, it would only be the expansion you have to pay for and that’s it. P2W is usually a term reserved for game design that forces you to make repeated micro-transactions to compete with other players.

Guild Mission/Favor problem for 1-2 p guilds

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Labjax.2465

Labjax.2465

I don’t think some realize exactly how much work goes into building and maintaining a guild of any actual size. While the idea of free rewards for everyone sounds nice, there should be some payoff associated with the effort larger groups put into building communities.

Smaller guilds should be supported, but there has to be a point at which we say, that isn’t really a guild, or else the concept of guilds loses all meaning.

That said, I do believe Anet should explore enhancements to personal housing instances.

I don’t see where anyone is asking for free rewards? If a guy like the OP wanted free rewards, he could join a giant-size guild and mooch off the efforts of the rest of the guild.

I helped run a guild in another game for 2-3 years. I know all about how “free” and “effort” work. Moochers will be moochers.

Theoretically speaking, 1-2 person deal who tries to build and upgrade a guild on his/their own is putting in the top amount of effort a person can put into building and upgrading a guild. Free is the farthest thing from it.

I do get the part about guild concept and what a guild means and all that. I think that is a fair argument. But if we’re talking about 1 person, or a married couple, who are never going to join a guild outside of their small setup, then is the concept of a guild truly being harmed by their being able to accomplish something on their own?

Here’s where I see the validity of your argument: If there was a sizable number of people who would otherwise join a guild together, but are not doing so because it’s easier/simpler to run a 1-2 man guild. I don’t see that being the case though, even if micro guilds are capable of making monumentally slow progress.

How you keep things in line would be relatively simple (and keep in mind, I’m not well-versed in what the current/planned guild mission design is): You have a tier of missions that is only unlocked if your guild is 1-2 members. This tier is soloable, but gives a fraction of the advancement that regular tiers do. So if you are doing a micro guild, there is content for you, but the incentive is still there to join a “real” guild if you want to progress at the same rate as other players.

Bada-bing, bada-boom. Problem solved.

Guild Mission/Favor problem for 1-2 p guilds

Labjax.2465

The premise of the OP is that all content in the game should be available to everyone, regardless of playstyle, skill, or frequency of participation. This has never been entirely true and it’s becoming less true with HoT.

Some players like this philosophy; some don’t. If you’re in the second category, I recommend you consider adapting to these sorts of changes rather than getting frustrated by them.

In the specific situation:

  • Almost the entire core-game is suitable for small guilds, including 2-player guilds.
  • Almost none of the core is designed for large guilds.
  • HoT will include some content that is designed for large guilds.

In other words, small guilds are only theoretically prevented from easy participation in a tiny amount of the game. I think that’s a reasonable compromise.

That’s not really what the premise of the thread is. The premise is this guy would like to do guild content on his own, or with only one other person.

Is there even a purpose for building up your 1 man guild?

If you want personal guild bank, you can just queue up now. Other than that, all you can get is a really really tiny guild buff.

Is there even a purpose to playing guild wars 2?

I have a one man guild. I started it originally for the purpose of having a tag, so that people would stop trying to recruit me to their guilds. I never expected to be able to do anything with it. But I did get a few upgrades, one of them a guild bank. And it has been useful to me on occasion.

"Shards of Glory" tradeable

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Labjax.2465

Labjax.2465

It’s not a big deal to me, personally. I don’t think doing different aspects of the game would be a big pain for me. As it is, I kind of already do.

That said, I’m not sure I understand the whole “do all aspects for a legendary” design choice, in principle (and yeah, I know Shards will be tradeable – I’m talking about the general idea of non-tradable aspects).

It sounds great on paper, but how many players are there who stick to a few different types of gamplay (sometimes even 1 single type) and are avid, active players? I don’t have any numbers on that, but it seems kind of short-sighted to force those players to participate in virtually everything to get a legendary.

In terms of game accomplishment, what is more impressive? Being a jack-of-all-trades? Or being an expert at PvP? Or an expert at dungeons? And so on. I don’t see how diving into different game modes makes you legendary. It makes you versatile, I guess, but now you will be semi-good at a few things, instead of super good at one or two things. It feels like a cheap excuse to make people explore all aspects of the game and always has.

But maybe it is born out of some kind of game stereotype of the whole “lone explorer” character (kind of like in Fallout) who traverses everything and comes out on top and is basically a “legend.” It makes more sense in that framework, but it doesn’t make sense in terms of what a legend is, as legendary people in RL are usually somebody who excelled in a single field, not people who were jack-of-all-trades. Or were amazing at everything (as far as I can tell, amazing at everything would be closer to the definition of a god, rather than a legendary figure).

Legendary gear is not "Legendary"

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Labjax.2465

Labjax.2465

I disagree with your idea, mainly because all it does is a) add more coding and art work b) make it more confusing what you’re getting when you get the piece of gear and c) pigeonhole people with a stereotypical profession look (which is little different from pigeonholing them with a psychedelic rainbow look).

In other words, what it adds will please some people and annoy others, and it will be extra work for all of virtually no change. Now if there was more than one skin for a legendary that you could choose from, that would be a step up. For example, if they were going to make class-specific skins, then you should be able to choose which class’s theme you want equipped, rather than having it forced on you.

The wardrobe system in this game is very robust and taking the time to basically add new legendary skins, for the sole purpose of forcing them on different professions as stereotypical looks would be antithetical to the system we have in every way.

What class will you play at the release?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Labjax.2465

Prob my engi. Been getting comfortable with the class in SW, even using a squishy build. Will def level a Rev, but will prob use a metric ton of scrolls and tomes, so I don’t have to do much actual leveling.

I was planning on doing a mixed leveling thing (like use a tome every time I gained a level), and then I realized that before lvl 80 all exp I earn goes only to leveling, whereas all exp I earn after 80 goes to masteries.
So since I have enough scrolls/tomes to hit 80 not doing so would be a massive waste of exp that could have gone into masteries instead, so I’m now in the insta level camp.

Yeah, that’s part of the reason I want to use tomes if I’m gonna level a Rev at all. I will prob do one on the side as tomes are available, cause I don’t have enough for insta-80 at the moment. I don’t want to push aside my mastery progress for days while I slowly level a Rev to 80.

I was wondering about tomes and masteries at 80, but I spose it makes sense that they wouldn’t help cause then you’d have people hoarding tomes and scrolls who cap masteries within a day of release. I think they should consider adding unique type of scrolls for mastery XP itself though.

Raid Feedback

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Labjax.2465

Labjax.2465

I see some people in here who I guess are new to raiding? Enrage timers are pretty standard design for raid bosses. The idea is nothing specific to GW2. The concept is simply that if there is no enrage timer, then you can take as long as you want to kill the boss, if you stay alive.

This is problematic because if you can take as long as you want, then you can substitute skillful play for heal/support stacking (basically you spam support healing and support skills, so that people can get away with tripping into mechanics over and over).

I’m kind of ??? as to why people seem surprised by it though. Most (if not all) world event bosses have a kind of enrage timer – it’s simply done in reverse. Instead of the boss enraging when you run out of time and killing you, the boss disappears and the event is over.

It’s possible the timers need to be tweaked to ease up time a little (I have no idea if they do – have not tested the raids myself) but removing them entirely would go against one of the fundamental mechanics of a raid.

Have some faith, young grasshopper. Dungeons are quite different from raids. You can’t go out and find 10 good engis in a jiffy because you want engis or something. If the raids are at all challenging, that’s so not how it works.

You need people who can work together and are good at both damage and raid mechanics. Sure, some classes will get passed up on occasion in elite guilds/groups, but as a general rule, pulling good numbers and doing mechanics well is what makes you stand out in a raid.

What makes me scratch my head is… how the heck people are gonna figure out who isn’t pulling their weight without damage meters.

I pretty much play this game 100% solo, but I get by on the open world content. I’m a little afraid that the new stuff isn’t gonna match up to what I’ve seen in SW, which I really enjoy. There is enough end-game content in the form of open world play that you don’t need to be doing the instanced stuff to entertain yourself.

What bothers you about crafting?

With a guide and enough gold, you can breeze through any profession. In fact, in my experience with crafting in this game, the only time-consuming part is if you’re trying to be frugal. If you can throw gold at the problem without a care in the world, all you gotta do is buy the components you need before you start, from a list, and clickety-click your way to the top. Probably be 0-500 in 30 minutes or less.

Also, pop crafting booster before you start and you’ll need like 2/3 of the normal components required, cause of all the crits you’ll be getting.

Labjax.2465

The easiest way to actually fix this is an obvious answer that Anet has not supplied…make ascended gear tradeable and sellable on the TP. There, we’ve fixed the problem because now ANYBODY can gain access to it if they have a friend willing to make it or enough money to buy it. I do understand why they haven’t though, considering it’s currently just like how exotics used to be before you could start buying them. Now everybody and their mom has exotics.

The interesting thing is, ascended gear pretty much is buyable with gold, it’s just a long, complicated process. I guess there’s a karma requirement or two as well, but that’s about all I can think of. If you have the gold to buy the mats, getting to 500 in the relevant professions isn’t hard. Just expensive. Same with many of the mats.

I bought it cause I had a little extra $ and I’m banking on the fact that the updates they do as time goes on will make it worth it in the long-term. Plus, I just think it’ll be kinda fun to be in on the ground floor for once, which is something I almost never do with games.

I imagine there’ll be a lot of bugs at first, but it comes with the territory. I don’t blame anyone who is holding off. If it wasn’t for the little extra $ I had to burn, I’d be doing the same as you… waiting for price to go down way after.

Time will tell what the expansion is worth in gameplay. It’s a hard thing to estimate and depends a lot on how you feel about new features and such, like the masteries. If that sort of thing doesn’t interest you, then that’s a chunk of the expansion content right out of the gate that wouldn’t count in “making it worth the money.”

One thing I’m curious about is whether the raids are actually going to induce any sort of competitive scene, or if they will just be aggrandized dungeons… farmed into oblivion with little challenge. I mean, if it does induce a competitive scene, that could add a whole other dimension to this game’s community.

Heart of Thorns "Farming Map$$"

I enjoy the mechanics of SW. Haven’t joined a chest farm map once. I just do event runs. It’s fun doing the distributive mechanics with teams and the four bases and all that. It feels much more like a community effort than past maps I’ve participated in, such as Cursed Shore. In CS, everything was “go here, go there, every group does the same thing at the same time.”

In SW, it’s more spread out, so you have the bonus of numbers, without the hassle of 100+ people trying to tag the same mob.

Also, the whole thing about blues and greens coming in a special “bag,” instead of as individual drops is A++

If you own the core game before the HoT expansion announcement, and apply the expansion code to your account before it goes live, you get a character slot.

If you bought the game from a retailer after the announcement of the expansion, but before June 16th, you’ll get a character slot if you apply the expansion code towards your account before it goes live.

If you meet the requirements (listed above [Own core game pre-Jan 23, and apply a HoT serial code before Hot launch]), you will receive a bonus character slot, above and beyond any that may be offered with a particular edition.

One (total character slots) with Standard
Two (total character slots) with Deluxe
Two (total character slots) with Ultimate

Ok, thanks so much for clearing that up. ^^

I got a question, something I’m not really understanding from the buy page: Ultimate lists as giving a character slot.

But then the “learn more” says this:

If you registered your core Guild Wars 2 game before January 23, 2015 and register a pre-purchase serial code for Heart of Thorns any time before the expansion is released, you’ll receive a free character slot! Once you apply a pre-purchase serial code, you’ll be eligible for the slot regardless of where you bought the core game.

If the serial code you used to register the core game came from a retail vendor (rather than buy.guildwars2.com or in-game) and was applied to your account between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015, you’ll also be eligible for a free character slot if you apply a Heart of Thorns pre-purchase serial code before the expansion release.

All accounts that become eligible by July 9 will have their free character slot applied by July 10. Eligible accounts that are upgraded with a pre-purchase serial code after July 10 will receive their slots on a weekly basis after that.

So did they make it so that any pre-order gets a char slot, as long as the account was around before a certain date? And if so, what’s the point of the char slot on the ultimate edition?

I r confused.

Edit: Or was this only for super early pre-orders back in June/July??

What do you guys think about Dungeon Sellers?

What would you filter? Anything with “sell”, “selling”, “sllng”, “dealing”, “hawking”, “providing”, “exchanging”, “any-new-word-made-up-to-escape-the-filtering.”

It doesn’t seem viable to create a filter for language – people are pretty smart even if they can’t get around kittens.

What would be the motivation for people to dodge a filter though? The guys who are selling dungeons want to reach those who will buy, not those who want to shut them down. If it is designed as something that people can choose to filter or not filter for themselves, then those who are interested will use no filter and see it, and those who don’t care to see it will filter obvious words for selling dungeons.

It might just be simple enough to work.

The best thing anet could do, i think, would be to implement a ‘tag’ system and allow us to filter by tags.

so if you’re selling a path, you tag your LFG with “sell” and players can filter out that tag; or you want to make really certain you never see a sold path, so you search for the tag “nosell” and the only results you get are the ones that have specifically tagged their group as NOT selling.

Anyone attempting to exploit such a system kindof shoots themselves in the foot, as you can quite reasonably join any group tagged ‘nosell’ and expect not to have to pay. Plus, it’s general enough that ANet could implement it without giving the appearance of directly supporting path sellers (which i don’t think they want to do, even as they don’t want to try to outlaw it)

Yeah, sounds like a good solution to me.

Time to nerf SW farming and more guild stuff

I love when people throw out numbers about how much they can make from farming and then act like it’s the standard that everyone is making, all the time.

Take it as a compliment, if you’re making 40g an hour in SW, you’re probably in the top 10 percentile, if not top 2.

There may or may not be aspects that need nerfing, but you gotta keep in mind the above. Your standard of loot gain is not necessarily what everyone else’s is.

Omg. Profane. (Shudder). It’s funny how just a few changes to it changed it from cool armor to wtfweretheythinking armor.

Guild Wars 1 profane armor.

What I want to know is, what the deal is with those straps. That thing must be the biggest pain in the kitten to put on.

Nah, they have plenty of sexy, cold, lifeless hands to help them get strapped in and out.

LOL.

As long as no one is scamming each other, I don’t see it as a big deal. Though if there was a way to filter LFG with certain words (e.g. filter out words like “sell” or “selling”, so you don’t have to see it if you’re not interested) that might be cool. I’m assuming a feature like that does not already exist, or people wouldn’t be complaining.

The whole thing about it devaluing dungeon gear is kinda nonsense, since a) it’s not tradeable, b) there’s no way to know how somebody got dungeon gear without asking them and c) it’s not like dungeons are super hard in the first place.

Invest in Silk

Watch Anet put ridiculous masses of Silk into new HoT crafting bags right after you invest.

Exactly. An expansion would be the perfect time to mess with what’s the best gear and/or how easy it is to get the current best gear.

If ascended is required for raids, you can bet that it will be both easier to craft and there will be better gear in raids. And you can bet that ascended will either instantly, or gradually, become the new “exotic.”

We said we didn't want the trinity

I am definitely not interested in these discussions about whether or not a game changing over time is betrayal or other such nonsense, but I’ve been seeing some frankly alarmingly wrong arguments being made in these types of threads and I can’t sit by and watch people spout them anymore.

To everyone saying corner stacking or face tank stacking is a hallmark of trinity mmos: you’re embarrassing yourself. As a long time veteran of mmos like WoW, Rift, FF14, and more, that is practically never true. Stacking literally only happens when there’s an environmental/boss mechanic that requires it or a damaging aoe is so specific that everyone needs to stand in one spot, lest they die. Other than that, no one is stacking. Everyone is moving around to avoid attacks, or to get a better vantage point, or even just for the hell of it. Yes, some melee classes will be standing near each other on the boss but I mean come on, that’s the definition of the word melee. Saying that stacking is not only prevalent within but a hallmark of trinity mmos is complete bs. Hate the trinity all you want; that’s fine, that’s cool. I don’t blame you and you’re entitled to your opinion. But if you truly think that corner stacking is just as commonplace in other mmos and isn’t a problem pretty exclusive to GW2, you’re just lying, whether on purpose or accident.

So much +1.

As for the debate about multiple sets of gear, if they add raids, the raid bosses will no doubt drop gear that is ascended equivalent, much like how raids operate in other games (the hardest bosses drop the best gear). So having multiple sets will be a bit of a pain, but nothing like the pain people are imagining from the current ascended grind.

Standing still and mashing a rotation is exactly what you get with the trinity.

I played a trinity game for 2+ years, helping run a raiding guild. “Standing still and mashing a rotation” is a gross oversimplification of what trinity play looks like and is frankly insulting to the skill required to coordinate and execute said play, when dealing with highstakes twitch mechanics.

Dodge roll in this game makes dodging mechanics so easy, compared to the average trinity game, where you actually have to anticipate your positioning and start moving INSTANTLY, or you’re dead from a mechanic (typically, the only person who can take a boss hit or two before dying is the tank and I really mean a hit or two, not four or five).

In a typical trinity game, the only thing that’s going to save you from poor awareness and positioning is heal spam, which only goes so far in the context of a timed boss fight with enrage mechanics if you don’t have good enough DPS.

I could go on. Point is, if you don’t like the idea of trinity design, good for you, but don’t misrepresent what it is.

Something tells me this is a decision from on high that the team we interact with can do virtually nothing about. Arenanet undoubtedly has to answer to NCSoft and justify the monetary costs of an expansion of this size with certain price parameters.

This is also pre-order pricing (it will probably go on sale some time after release) they are not a sub-based game, and there is no guarantee that the expansion would give a significant boost to gem store sales, so they have to make up the cost somewhere.

I’m sure all of the grindstone devs wish they could give everybody a free expansion. Probably wish they could give out free candy to all the GW2 fans, too. But keeping the lights on costs money.

The pricing choice may bleed out some old players, but if you look at it from a business perspective, it will probably bring in a lot of new ones too. The idea of giving out the original game free with the expansion means no intimidating wall to people who haven’t played the game before, but hear about it because of the expansion. It is still only a single purchase, which may (at release) be more costly than buying the original game to try it, but psychologically, it’ll be more appealing than two separate purchases.

It would be nice if they found a way to throw vet expansion purchases a bone or two, but I doubt they can do anything about the price itself.
