Elite Specializations & Hero Point Feedback [Merged]

Oh btw, from a game design standpoint, having a level 80 go through an incremental unlock process with a new spec makes no sense. It makes sense when leveling and when you are leveling, the content is designed for incomplete builds and limited ability use. Level 80 is balanced around full specs and full gear.

So basically, anyone who uses a partially unlocked elite spec is going to be gimping themselves for no good reason in content that is designed for fully unlocked specs.

Bottom line: Incremental unlock is a big no-no. Make it instant once you’ve filled out the requirements. As in, you get it all at once or not at all. Halfway specs are for games with true level cap increases and content to match, not games putting you in level 80 content for level 80 characters with level 80 specializations unlocked.

Gaile gray’s post implies people who have a problem with long grind for their basic elite skills and traits are in some way just silly.

But… all the complaints are silly. The common denominator for all of them is “I don’t want to play to unlock this, I want it now.” Anet Devs said previously that they pay attention to legitimate complaint posts, the ones that actually provide constructive feedback. And they take that feedback and make changes to the game.

Edit – Somewhere buried in the forums, Colin or MO actually gave examples of changes they made based on player feedback.

People have provided constructive feedback. Lots of it. Just because there is whining mixed in doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. In fact, I’m sure there are loads of people playing this game who would be happy to have sat down in the development stages of HoT and helped the devs make a system for elite specializations that most people would be happy with. But as far as I know, there was no such conversation.

So you can be an apologist and talk about how they respond to feedback, but we both know they tend to be slow-moving when it comes to anything beyond bug fixes. Talking about giving them feedback now, when the stuff is done and released, when they could have gotten such feedback months ago by being a bit more forthcoming with details… it’s a bit insulting.

I’m not saying they should have consulted us. It is their game and their business model. But if you are going to talk as if we should be telling them how we want the game to be, then they have to give us details before it’s too late to make changes. It’s a two-way street and we are the ones paying them, not the other way around.

I am tired and cranky, and frankly annoyed at the attitude of “please give constructive feedback!” As if we are worker bees and owe it to the queen bee to act in a certain way. It’s not just guild wars 2 that grinds my gears about this. There’s almost this extremism effect in video games now, where players whine more and devs ask for more from players. Instead of a balanced environment, it’s “we want what we want, give it to us” (players) and “then you make the game for us” (devs).

Almost like it’s reaching this point where the devs are just like, f it, you design the game and we’ll put a bow on it so it looks fancy. Except then the devs inevitably go off in some other direction half the time because they have an internal process and are never as in-touch with their playerbase as they’d like to be because none of them have the time to log 16 hour days. And because they have their own ideas and aspirations about what a game should and shouldn’t be. And because they have the almighty dollar hanging over their heads at every turn.

I mean, honestly, maybe these companies should pay a few people to log 16 hour days… people who really love their game and would play that much anyway… and report back to them on what the game is and what the playerbase is like and what they want. Cause no matter what they say about playing the game themselves, I’ve yet to see a company that truly understands its own game in the way that most of its players do. They are always one step behind because their long work days mean they are going to be casual and detached most of the time.

This was my concern and why I’ve not bought the game. I’m still trying to get a grasp on how much new content there actually is. The length of time to acquire it isn’t bothersome if there’s plenty of it and it’s fun to play. I shall have to hop on and actually see the zone sizes before making the ultimate choice, $50 is not cheap afterall!

My initial thoughts… the masteries make it worth it. So far it seems like there will be a LOT of cool stuff to play around with, especially as you get into higher level masteries. And you will likely feel a lot more powerful with those masteries (the one caveat is, the maguuma masteries are gonna be maguuma use, as far as I know, so you use them in maguuma maps and that’s it).

Elite specs are a wash due to being gated and basically worthless until you’ve got it all unlocked, cause who wants to operate on half an elite spec, but time will tell what happens there.

The first map tries to feel big with all its canopy and vine stuff, but it’s not that big. There are a couple that are ginormous though. You will probably be able to see the details once people start putting out screenshots and such.

Story has some refreshing variety to it, takes into account a lot of the complaints from season 2, and overall is good fun + easy XP for masteries. I’m not sure how far the story goes. I did a bunch today, but I imagine there’s quite a bit more.

This. Anet, remember the HUGE backlash from your 2nd version of unlocking traits?

Lol, I’m beginning to see why this is an apt comparison.

You know, it gives me no joy at all to have to say this, cause I hate to crap on months work of development, but Anet… you guys basically just made the old trait system, except you replaced trait unlocks with elite specializations.

You made the same mistake as before… HPs are not repeatable in any way, so you have to go complete certain ones to get your elite spec fully unlocked. Granted, you rectified this in one area, with the WvW unlocks, but then you left the PvEers out to dry. And it’s definitely better than the old trait system was in the sense that elite specs technically aren’t as vital as traits and you don’t need to do every challenge, just most of them (unless you have world complete level of HP done on non-HoT – then you only got about half to do).

So it’s not AS bad. But the distinct scarcity of options for how to go about unlocking your elite spec is pretty depressing. You could have made jungle challenges that are repeatable, soloable, take some skill, and ultimately allow you to go your own way to get there. Instead you redressed the old skill system, almost as if you ran out of time and kinda went, “Eh, we’ll go with what we had before.”

It makes me sad. I hope that I’ll care less over time, but something tells me the complaints are going to persist rather audibly.

On a nicer note, I’m thoroughly enjoying the story and the masteries.

Honestly, I think people are just upset because they wanted the elite specs on day one. Having to go through walls to get them does feel a bit odd, as far as expansions and new specializations usually go. I can’t deny that.

I just wish they were account unlock. I don’t look forward to unlocking them on every single class… and I have… every… single… class.

There’s a kind of Thrasher that heals if you stand in its ground AoE. I assume that’s the 6k you’re seeing. Keep in mind this is a champ and it looks like you’re doing it with two people.

I do think this is going to be a problem later on though… that some of these are all but imossible to solo and (as I mentioned in a thread of my own) that there’s basically no motivation for helping people once you’ve done it, other than the kindness of your heart.

Hero Points (helping others)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Labjax.2465

Labjax.2465

As far as I can tell, helping kill a Hero Point boss gives absolutely nothing if you’ve already done it. But here’s the thing…

Now that we’ve got Champ challenges that require at least a handful of players (esp. because of the time limit) I think repeat HP should give a small amount of event completion XP (or, at least, some mob kill XP… something). Reason being… there is no motivation to help people out once you have a HP done, other than the kindness of your heart. And while I’ve helped people out several times already, the kindness of my heart is going to wear thin pretty quickly, as is the number of people who are running around needing Hero Points.

Which will leave us with a situation where people who are late to the party have to get others to help them for nothing just to get the things done. This was never an issue with regular skill challenges because they were all soloable.

It seems like a valid concern to me at this time. Only way I see not is if I’m missing something big to do with how HPs work.

They aren’t going to do that. That’s never been how this game works.

Good point. I’ll settle for a potion of reasonable length that every time I get A Hero Point, I get 2 instead. Because the boost prove that the game does in fact work that way.

At least it isn’t pay2win up in this bi…. Oh who the hell are we lying to, it is exactly the way the game works.

Except that you can get boosters with relative ease through areas other than the gemstore.

There is a fine line between boosters, what you’re proposing, and what the OP is proposing. They are not the same thing simply because of semantics. The game design impact and implications are vastly different.

Playing Nice and Exploits

Labjax.2465

Sorry but this posting just makes me laugh so much.

Nice community is pretty darn subjective from one individual to another.

As for asking us nicely to be good people and report exploits bugs etc for you.. well yeah sure, for many of us that goes without saying, but it sounds to me that ANET have already identified things but aren’t going to delay launch in order to fix them.
As for exploits in general, how can you ask players to take this seriously when ANET themselves muddy that idea in the current core game in allowing the endless purposeful failing of events and event chains in order to exploit the reset timers for personal gain.. how long has this kinda stuff been reported up and ANET come back and suddenly allow the exploitation of game mechanics. Sure things have the ability to fail but to allow them to be endlessly exploited like the Jofast events without making any effort to complete… makes this request to be nice just plain silly season.

Then take a read at others that have posted here about the level of hacking that has and continues to happen in WvW.. I still have cold sweats over the invisible golem hacks, the Mesmer flying portals, the speedhacks.. and lately the re-occurrence of the resource node hackers, the AFK faming exploiters… fix the stuff, manage those nice rules and policies you have implemented (yes LFG abuse I am looking at you), instead of sending emails to advise your not penalising this or that at the moment – then you might get more players to take this kind of request seriously.

It’s a friendly reminder from a staff member, who is going out of his way to communicate with the community. Something that used to be begged for.

For some, it may be reassuring to know that their friendly neighborhood Banhammer Man™ is on patrol and ready to respond if you see something problematic.

I guess there is some open wound that a few people feel this is pouring salt into, but I’d advise you to take it for what it is (a friendly communication from the GW2 team), report something if you see it (if you feel like it), and let them do the rest. They are not asking us to discern what is and isn’t an exploit – that’s their job. Nor will we always agree with them on what is and isn’t an exploit.

Our “job” is to enjoy the game. The rest is optional. In fact, we don’t even have to enjoy it. We can hate it too, if we like. :p

P.S. Some food for thought for the road… not all issues are easy to fix. Hate to be the breaker of illusion here, but code is not magic and some bugs are hard to address. Call me a GW2 apologist tonight. Next week, I’ll be a hater. You never know.

1) I sympathize with your efforts feeling diminished. It’s no fun to feel like you’ve wasted time.

2) Anet’s expansion goals can’t be centered around pleasing people who prepare.

Trying to be one step ahead of the competition, trying to be ahead of others out of the gate, in general, in life, is something that can easily waste your time. There is risk in trying to be ahead – the risk of going in the wrong direction.

It’s one of those things in life that comes with the territory, unfortunately.

This is essentially what even seasoned thieves go through. The current balance says that if a thief chooses to engage, be that contesting a point or anything that isnt +1, he’s going to melt. It isnt that the cap is high, its that thief is supposed to be anywhere people are not.

Which is pretty contrary to the whole concept of a thief might I add.

If that’s true, I would say it’s not so much a contradiction of the thief concept, as it is a contradiction of what PvP is. If PvP is largely defined as combat between players, then a class whose primary role is to avoid combat is ill-fitting to that definition.

PvP is obviously not only combat, but combat is the primary determining factor. So a class whose role in combat is diminished is a class that is arguably worth less in casual scenarios. (I imagine competitive, team meta is its own beast entirely).

That is the role they are given. And a role they have held since the beginning of the game. But the usefulness of the role is at ita strongest in casual play.

What would you change? What would you alter to achieve that change?

Presumably better ability to handle direct fighting, with some tweaking done to ensure that tankier Thieves have weaker access to stealth (e.g. cannot be best of both worlds).

Mind you, I’m nothing akin to an expert on GW2 PvP or Thieves. I’m simply following the line of reasoning with the information that other people are giving me.

Having a good team attitude (in general) does way more than most people realize. A lot of people are quick to give up and even the tiniest belief that your teammates have got your back can make a big difference.

It’s not going to get you a win every time, but it helps. Similarly, toxic/negative attitudes drag teams down.

One thing to note about positivity tho… especially in regards to praise… it’s good to use it sparingly and apply it truthfully. Teams that are winning too fast too quick can get kitteny because they think they have it in the bag.

So what your saying is that telling your teammates they’re all tall and handsome and well endowed (their gear, like the staff) wont work?

What, pray tell, is so hard to understand about the term “unique”?

No, really. I’m seriously. What needs to be fixed on ANet’s end over this? Do we really need a tooltip that screams “OMFG YOU CAN ONLY WEAR ONE OF THESE AT A TIME THAT’S WHY WE CALL IT UNIQUE”?

Because if that’s the case, I need to find another game. I saw what dumbing stuff down did to WoW and SWTOR. I’m simply not interested in running around a world where players have to be spoonfed – it’s BORING. -Sid

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usability

Usability design is not the same as dumbing down. Usability means you make things intuitive, rather than confusing. If you have ever picked up a new system effortlessly, it was probably because of one of two things: a) You are really experienced with similar systems or b) It had a lot of careful usability testing done that resulted in a very intuitive system.

Good usability design means that an amateur can pick up a system and feel like a pro, with little time investment. It’s not about reducing complexity; it’s about changing how you deliver complexity.

Usability is essentially communication.

Also, “Unique Equip.” The simplest change imaginable and the meaning becomes clear to all in an instant.

Please Make Map Completion Account Bound

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Labjax.2465

Labjax.2465

Only thing I would be in favor of account bound for map completion is waypoint discovery, but then, people would probably say that map completion is too easy once you done it a single time.

The reason I’m in favor of waypoints at all is because it’s a pain sometimes going and discovering things like world boss areas on each character you have, or forgetting which one has what place unlocked.

But I could equally see an argument that having wps unlocked means a huge % of the work is already done for you and the rewards are too easy to get the second or third time around.

Something compromise-ish could be a thing like… once you’ve discovered the entrance to a map, that initial entrance wp is now unlocked on all characters, new and old. But only that wp and any other wps you unlock that qualify as an entrance don’t count toward the account unlock.

The idea would be that it’s a little easier to get around on alts, but not so easy that it undermines the spirit of map completion.

Hello there! I’m doing a forum-based Halloween Fashion contest with the help of my fellow judges, Moonlit and Chesh. Named after that mischievous asuran Taimi.

The details are as follows. Have fun with it!

PRIZES (Change: Tested sending items. This is now open to EU entries.)
1st:
Mini Zuzu, Cat of Darkness
Blood Dye
5 Transmutation Charges

2nd:
Ash Dye
5 Globs of Ectoplasm

3rd:
Quaggan Killer Whale Backpack Cover

SUBMISSION RULES

- Entries should be in 3 screenshots: Front view, back view, and side view (either side will do).
- This is NOT a screenshot contest – we’re only using screenshots to see what you put together. Your goal should be to provide screenshots that best show what your composition looks like.
- “Preview” entries are disqualified. (That means no previewing items and submitting that as your composition. Note that you CAN use the Hero Panel to take your screenshots, as long we can tell that your composition is not made from previewing. This is to encourage people to create outfits that they will use for Halloween, rather than outfits that they can’t use but that look cool.)
- One entry per person. (If you find you are unsatisfied with your initial submission, you can overwrite your first submission with a new submission ONCE. This will count as your single entry. If you post a second entry, we will assume that it is your intended submission and ignore the first one. NOTE: If you wish for your entry to be group themed, i.e. a compilation of Sailor Moon characters, this is allowed. It will count as your single entry.)

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM JUDGING

Compositions will be judged on three criteria, with ratings from 1 to 10 (note that you will not see your actual rating — you will only see whether you won a prize) -
Theme: Does the composition have a clear theme? If so, how well does it exemplify that theme? (themes are anything from looking like a Nurse to looking like Captain Jack Sparrow to looking like an Axe Murderer)
Originality: Does the composition stand out from other entries, in design choices and/or theme choices? (e.g. are you the 15th Sailor Moon? If so, have you at least done it uniquely compared to other entries?)
Appeal: Is the composition pleasing to look at? Are colors and clothing types combined well? (for example, using a hodgepodge of mismatching colors will likely get a poor rating, unless you manage to make the hodgepodge work in a way that is pleasing to the eye)

Submission Period: Submissions will close at 11:59pm on October 30th, Eastern Time.

Winning: Winners will be announced on November 3rd Eastern or earlier, depending on availability of judges’ time. If there are delays in getting entries judged, I will mention it in the thread. Prizes will be delivered after the winners are announced.

Wiki is saying you can send mail from NA to EU. Is it only items that are restricted or is it all fair game? I’m a bit confused on that.

And mods: This is not an in-game event. It’s all going to be done through the forums. Not sure why you moved it here..

Why do we have weapon swap cooldown?

I admit I am not an expert on the ele class, but I fail to see how no (or lower) CD on attunement swapping would do little more than make it easier to correct a mistake in a rotation. The abilities themselves would still have the same cooldowns.

Let’s repeat that:“make it easier to correct a mistake in a rotation”.

Again:“make it easier”.

And again:“easier”.

Get the drift?

EDIT: just in case it went over some peoples heads. There is more than just pve in this game. Over simplifying the combat system is not beneficial for other game modes.

I had the drift. Then you buried it in oversimplification. There is a difference between simplifying the combat system and making it so that mistakes are easier to correct.

Engi is not an easy class to pick up and do well with, for example, despite the ease of switching kits.

I’m not sure that I’m invested in this particular feature, but on principle, I don’t think your argument is a good one.

That’s a really cool idea! ^^ I’d love to judge too, if you may. I’m from EU, if that matters, and wuv dressing my characters up, but don’t have enough cool skins to participate, yet.
As to my knowledge, you can send money between NA/EU, but not items.

Welcome aboard.

If that is the case, we’ll have to limit participation to NA. I can still have you as a judge though.

I’m gonna go type up some rules and prizes and whatnot, and send you and Moonlit a PM with the details when I’m done.

Hmm well it would require a lot of work to rebalance weapon skills (especially cooldowns) to prevent crazy combos, and then there’s ele as well – can you imagine what it would be like if there was no cooldown on attunement swapping? kitten scary to think of that – eles would reign supreme.

I admit I am not an expert on the ele class, but I fail to see how no (or lower) CD on attunement swapping would do little more than make it easier to correct a mistake in a rotation. The abilities themselves would still have the same cooldowns.

Also, as an aside for the thread in general (something to keep in mind about Engi) I’m 80% sure that Engi swap has a global cooldown (something like 1 second). Whereas normal weapon swap has no global cooldown. I might be a little off on the details, but I think that’s what it is from memory.

Point being, there is a little bit of a difference in how it’s balanced.

Not quitting at ecto gambling when I had 500 ectos from 399. I lost everything but 66 Ectos. Never going to gamble ectos again.

I feel your pain man. Months ago (maybe even a year by now) I did the same thing with gold. I’d been popping exotics into the mystic forge here and there and lo and behold, I got lucky and the precursor hammer dropped. Well, I was all ecstatic and after a lot of thought, I sold it, cause I didn’t think I’d ever want to make the legendary hammer.

Got something like 600 gold in profit from it. Spent some on gem conversion to get an item in the store… and then I went and spent most of the rest going back and gambling more exotics in the forge… with no profitable results…

After that, I was like… NOPE, not doing this anymore. T_T

Oh, forgot a question: Moonlit, I’m thinking single entries at the moment, just to make it easier when it comes to judging.

Quick questions about the contest. Is it just a fashion contest, is it supposed to be scary/spooky Halloween looks, or are people supposed to dress their character up as something (anime character, movie character, etc)? Also is it only one entry per person or are you allowed to submit multiple/ group entries? Assuming there can’t be any repeat entries as well (example being a bunch of being being sailor moon characters lol).

Also provided the submission is entirely on the forums I could be a judge for you. I am a huge believer in fashion wars 2, it being perhaps my favorite aspect of the game. I currently have around 20 characters, with 5 more soon to be on the way, just because I keep finding new looks I love lol. Up to you though, if not I’ll prolly end up submitting an entry so either way I’ll participate lol.

I’d be happy to have you as a judge.

My original thought was, something halloween-themed (e.g. spooky/scary), but now that you mention movie/anime/etc…. almost like a halloween party… I’m liking the concept of it. Might be we’ll go with that.. that one of the parameters is people are basically making a halloween costume, much like in RL (e.g. anything from trying to look like Michael Jackson to dressing up like a Nurse). Let me know which one you’re more into.

I’ll make an executive call on it one way or the other once I have another judge on board.

At a minimum you might want to state whether you’re in the NA or Europe server group. If you’re in NA and get a bunch of Europe applications, you’re gonna have a bad time when you find out they can’t come to your event.

I am in NA, but it shouldn’t matter much, since I plan for this to be done through the forums. As long as there are no issues with getting people their prizes afterwards (can NA mail be sent direct to EU characters or would that pose an issue?)

I’m planning on putting together a halloween contest for “best dressed,” but I’m not gonna do it unless I can get some volunteers to help me out (I don’t want to be the sole judge).

Right now, the goal is to have 3 judges in total, including myself. If you’re interested, let me know. I’m looking for people who have some kind of fashion sensibility and/or interest in fashion.

The details are still being ironed out in my head, but I plan to get the submission stage going as soon as I can get some judges on board and slap together prizes/rules. I want to give people as much of a window as possible to use leading up to the 31st.

Ok. I found some videos from That_Shaman.

However they are up to 9 months old. Remember that after 9 months time, there is no guarantee they will be in game or look the same after all these months, so take with a grain of salt.

Light Ley Line

I hope those aren’t right, given the theme of this thread, cause they look like more of the same repetitive design choices. :/
