….or you know, mounts. The logical thing that everyday people use when traveling long distances, whether it’s a train, car, or plane. Almost every MMO has them, except GW2, and they don’t just have them for vanity. They are needed to travel long distances inside the game. Ironically, waypoints are still inconveniently insufficient, when you still need to switch out skills, weapons, and traits, which are an inconvenience.

-Awaits the irrational hatred against mounts from illogical, pro-waypoint, signet-switching swiftness players.-

Well honestly, if they made +33% the standard and tossed out anything swiftness-related, I think people would feel a lot better about not having mounts.

Better yet, they could make a toggle-able “sprint” type of skill like some games and have it be independent of your normal bar.

For the past week or so I have been playing a lot of GW2 and having tons of fun. I have 5 characters, 3 of them around level 20. I enjoyed the challenge of the game, and the ability to go where I wanted, and level how I wanted. With this update, the game feels terribly linear. So many cool, unique things that were in the game are not blocked off for me. I’ve tried playing since the update, but I jsut done feel it’s worth my time anymore. I’ll check back in a few months to see if anything has changed. This may seem overdramatic, but really, I’m just not having fun leveling my new characters anymore, and if I cant have fun, what’s the point of playing a game? Congratulations, anet, you’ve lost one of your newest, enthusiastic players. Which I believe was the complete opposite effect of what this update was supposed to bring.

In the spirit of fairness, I suggest you give them some time to iron out what is apparently a lot of bugs surrounding the new system and see if the experience is any different.

Ah, but the majority of the zerg is waiting inside the gate for Ulgoth, and not participating in the pre-events. Which would make it an equal size pie to be shared with at least 60% more contenders.

Good catch. Had not thought about that.

I think the simplest answer here would be to tweak the scaling or the tagging for when the number of players nearby goes exceedingly high. It seems like from what I’m reading (and from my own experiences) there is a sort of threshold for when things stay somewhat reasonable in terms of tagging and once the number of players goes past a certain point, it’s just a mess.

Tweaking scaling (e.g. making stuff harder to kill) could present its own set of issues (such as on bosses like Teq) so my recommendation would be to lower the requirements to get credit as the number of players near a mob goes up. This way the difficulty to tag stays roughly the same, even amidst the chaos of a full map population in one area.

This accusation gets tossed around a lot – that certain people who post such high praise for Anet’s decisions might be rewarded in some way. I haven’t reached a decision on this yet, so I thought the best approach is just to come right out and ask.

Will someone at ANet please tell the rest of us if you reward certain people for their forum comments? If you could just issue a flat out denial then that might diminish the number of accusations, especially right now.

We do not pay players to post on the forums nor do we make use of shill or sock puppet accounts. Honestly, I’m surprised if anybody takes these accusations seriously.

And I’m surprised you guys commented in the thread without locking this kitten

I wonder if champ bag drops (or just loot drops in general) are buggy for some mobs. For example, I almost never have a problem getting a champ bag from the Champion modniir guy leading up to the gate for the Ulgoth event (and that’s even only getting a few hits in). But then, I almost never get a bag from all 3 War Beasts or all 3 Champs right before the Jungle Wurm spawns in Caledon.

And then there is the issue of tagging groups of weak mobs, which I guess a lot of people are ok with? But it’s kind of a mess, imo.

I sacrifice a skill just to run faster...

I exclusively play Engineer and two years ago… Movement Speed wasn’t a concern for me at all.

I came back to playing back in Feb 2014 and the first thing I noticed is: Why am I so slow? Was I always this slow? Why am I even SLOWER in combat?

So I took up the trait for 25% increased movement speed and was like “Awesome. This feels right.” However, I did some testing and it seems I don’t go that faster with the trait AND swiftness boons. And if I just use swiftness, that feels like the same thing.

Is the trait useless? Well, like you said, I don’t want to sacrifice a skill just to move fast…but I don’t want to sacrifice a trait to move fast either. Worst of all: in combat, I’m still slowed to hell.

That has to be my number one complaint that I just don’t want to admit because I feel like no one else has these feeeeels.

Speed goes to whichever one is highest. So Swiftness’s 33% is the highest you’ll see, making the 25% seem useless while you have Swiftness up. It also may be hard to notice the difference. If you’re accustomed to running at +25%, an extra 8% is hardly noticeable.

I guess what raises eyebrows is when a single player account makes 500 post’s in a week all praising Anet. That volume seems to be unusually high.

It is hard to face up to rabid fans of something and not be a little surprised at just how hardcore defensive they can be about what they love.

Unfortunately for the surprised party, the rabid fans are usually just rabid fans and there is no great explanation, other than “they really love this thing.”

You should be happy you’re not a mesmer. We don’t have a speed signet, no out of combat speed traits, and one reliable (but unreliable) source of swiftness on one off-handed weapon.

I hooked my mesmer up with swiftness on kill sigil and runes of air + healing mantra for just this reason. It’s not as cool as equipping a speed boost signet, but it sure as heck beats plodding along. Oh and Blink too. Invaluable.

You do realize that comment was referring to Usability Testing, don’t you?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usability_testing

He said they had players of different types evaluating the system and giving their feedback on it over a year. A heck of a lot was probably changed over the course of that year, because usability testing is usually one of the final phases of testing, after everything has already been tested for quality and functionality by in-house testing.

We don’t know what the system used to be, just what it is.

Good catch.

For those who don’t know, usability testing is not the same as testing for bugs.

The purpose of the former is essentially to make a system as intuitively user-friendly as possible (e.g. so that a complete newbie to the system will understand it with as small a learning curve as possible). The purpose of the latter is to ensure that systems are functioning as intended on a technical level (e.g. checking to see if hitting Space makes your character jump as intended).

Perhaps the hardest part of tracking down bugs is that some of them are difficult to reproduce. This is one reason why you’ll see bugs that have been around for ages but never get fixed; if a tester cannot reproduce clear steps leading up to the bug occurring, it is nearly impossible for a programmer to pinpoint what the issue is in the code.

Some are higher priority as well and that doesn’t help. If a bug is largely trivial and is only being experienced by 5% of players, then it’s going to be difficult to justify putting a lot of hours into reproducing it and fixing the issue.

Edit: That said, I agree with Kamui. The beauty of a Public Test Server is that you get a lot of people with time on their hands who will happily try to reproduce bugs for you.

I guess if you’re satisfied by the official response, you will get something out of asking, but like others have said… if they were actually doing something like this, they would have absolutely no reason to answer truthfully.

If you want to believe in a conspiracy though, you can probably find much more interesting ones. Like Bilderberg something or the Illuminati.

I just look at it logically: We pretty much know for a fact that MMO forums are not watched by a high percentage of players, so what company in its right mind would waste money on hiring people to post positive stuff for a tiny overall audience, when they could just take that money and put it into producing more content? It’s a nonsensical business decision when you really stop and think about it.

And rewarding people is an even worse idea. Then you run the risk of some jaded player whistleblowing on you and ruining your entire reputation as a game company.

its unfair to others who likes the feature patch.

Don’t read the forums?

I mean, I don’t often use the whole “just avoid it” answer, but it’s not like you need to view the forums to download the latest patch and play the game.

There’s something you, and others who make similar threads, have to realize about internet forums: An internet forum thrives on controversy. How often do you see a thread full of positive feedback and general goodwill toward anyone and everyone that lasts more than a couple of pages?

The reason such threads get buried isn’t because posters have nothing but bad attitudes. It’s because people quickly run out of things to say. Controversy, on the other hand, keeps threads alive and kicking because human beings are experts at extending arguments into infinity, endlessly thinking that something will come out of it.

Are “hate” threads necessary? (e.g. threads that can’t even be called feedback) No. They aren’t. And many of them get locked. But threads that have a distinctly negative perspective are just part of what keeps the forums active. Kind of like yours here; despite your message being an intended positive one, yours is essentially another “complaint” thread.

And so as it goes, people who disagree with your complaint will argue it until the end of the universe.

Misconceptions regarding Level gating.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Labjax.2465

Labjax.2465

Hey folks,

Wanted to pop by and give another update on where we stand, as well as to help provide some information on some of the more common misconceptions we’ve seen floating around as well:

- There are bugs! We’ve seen the content direction system (the little arrow) pointing people at super high level maps when it shouldn’t, some systems/features not unlocking as intended for all characters on your account once your first learns them, some systems level gated that aren’t intended to be, balance issues where certain levels appear to be very out of whack, etc. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, our team is working to figure out what happened here and fix these as quickly as possible.

- There is misinformation: Numerous systems that show up in the level up guide that teaches you about things in the game when you gain levels are not locked out, the system simply tells you they exist in the game to help give you a better list of things you can do. Just because it’s included in the level up guide, doesn’t mean it’s actually locked out. You can dodge from level one, jumping puzzle from level one, etc. There also appear to be a lot of folks chiming in who haven’t actually played with any of the system, and are making claims that aren’t remotely true.

- There are some things happening at the wrong levels. Things like utility skills and elites are intended to come at approx. the same time they used to in actual game time, we sped up leveling for levels 1-15 and had them slide back in levels a bit to offset that pacing, they are not currently where we want them to be in the level up system. This was an oversight, and will absolutely be fixed.

- Not all of these changes were made as ways to teach the game, some of them are to provide a better sense of pacing, reward and progression. Early on we want to give a sense that you’re rapidly gaining new abilities, rewards, and learning new things as you level up. We added the level up reward messages, and the actual rewards themselves, and took abilities you’d usually use around that point in total game hours and presented them as unlocks (or things we teach that are already unlocked) to help give a better sense of pacing and progression.

With the addition of the new rewards, messaging, and level up screen to make leveling more exciting: we also wanted to make sure you had that feeling of excitement more often early on in the game, and presented new learning on a more regular cadence. So we greatly sped up leveling from levels 1-15. Many of the things unlocked at later levels are earned at about the same time period you used to start using them in the old system in actual real game time, we just staggered them out across the levels since we sped up leveling to make the game feel more rewarding early on.

- In general, this system is intended to be not only better for new players, but our hope is by the time it’s all in place you’ll find via the better rewards from levels 1-80 via the level up guide, the better rewards from personal story, the faster leveling from 1-15, and the ability to toggle the content direction system to help you with map complete will make this a better for experienced players as well.

- Over a years worth of testing with new players found we were absolutely able to keep them both more engaged, and more likely to return to keep playing Gw2 as a result of the intended system. That is at the end of the day, a win for all of us since all of you need more people to play with! However: if we find in the live environment that isn’t true and we’re not retaining new users better, we’ll absolutely both share that information with you, and continue to iterate to make it better. We keep very real time metrics of player retention for new users, and we’ll know very quickly how effective the work we’ve done is. I want to make it clear: what we used to have absolutely wasn’t good enough for our standards of retaining new users. Before we do some of the other things we want to do with Gw2, we had to fix this, period.

- Finally, I want to add that a few things (hello traits!) are things that can be improved for players who make multiple alts, we’re aware of this, and though company policy prevents us from discussing what’s in development: I can say we know Gw2 can be an even better game for people who love making alts in the long run, more info: when it’s ready™.

Thanks for the detailed info on the situation. I am curious to see what the leveling system will look like once it is in the “fully intended” place.

I suspect the problem in that regard is that WoW mostly knew what it was from the start and even though it went through some changes, it never really stopped being WoW.

Whereas these other games keep trying to be different and escape the WoW hate, only to realize down the road that the demographic for “different” is just not big enough, comparatively. Which puts them in a nasty identity-crisis-causing situation.

The game was losing subscriptions, but it was not hemoraghing before the CU, just a steady decline. Player representatives and developers had come up with a list of changes everyone could agree on, which was to be the combat upgrade. And then, suddenly, in an extremely short period, a completely DIFFERENT update happened.

It has always been rumored that the prime cause for the change was the success of WoW. There you had this barely known IP, made into a (at the start) very buggy MMO, and it had over 1 million subs pretty much from the start. And LucasArts said ‘hold on a minute, our IP is Star Wars, we should be doing better’. And hence a chance that completely ignored all the veteran players wanted, in the hopes of drawing a new public. Sound familiar?

And we have SOE’s own word for the fact that the CU caused the game to bleed players at an enormous rate, they admitted this in an article a few years after the fact. They also admitted they panicked and tried another change, the NGE, which was even LESS desirable to the remaining players, causing another even bigger exodus.

Please read this blog:
http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/feature/3961/page/2

Scott Jennings, otherwise known as Lumm the Mad, legendary game developer, calls it the worst MMO failure in history. Most everyone else in the branche agrees. SWG only survived on life support, because people who had SOE’s all-games-sub had access to it. Conservative estimates have it at maximum of 40,000 players, even then. Personally, I think it was closer to 20,000.

Sounds about right. And that’s just the thing. Everybody wants to be making what WoW is making. :/

As a former Bloodfin player, I do hope you’re being sarcastic there… I saw my guild reduced from 120 to 40 (CU) then 5 (NGE) in half a year’s time thanks to those brilliant changes.

I despised the changes, don’t get me wrong. But SWG survived for quite a while after the NGE and I think it was bleeding players even before the changes. It just obviously bled a ton of angry veterans in the process.

Anyway, what I was trying to say, as it pertains to GW2, is that they may be steadily bleeding players similar to how SWG was and this is their way to try to keep the ship from dipping significantly underwater (at the most likely planned for expense of some angry veterans).

I don’t doubt they did the right thing from a monetary standpoint. I don’t doubt SWG did the right thing from a monetary standpoint when they implemented the CU and later the NGE.

From a game design standpoint, however, I feel it’s tragic for the people who put their heart and soul into innovative designs and eventually end up with something that is like the game equivalent of a blockbuster movie.

I am just imagining people constantly asking “do we have a commander?” only to realize that they have tags turned off and forgot. >.<

Perhaps the toggle off could work the same way as when you toggle names off, just press Alt key and the commanders are visible. The developers are paid a lot of money surely they can come up with something that works. I’m not on the payroll, so I don’t won’t to commit hours out of my day to form a focus group and do the work for them.

In any event I’ll take the band aid. As I mentioned above. Once the trivial task of turning the commander tags off on the clients side. They can then focus on how further to fix commander tags.

Just turn off the arrow and do what you want. I will after I’m done testing.

Do what I want with my level-locked skills you mean? Explore locked skill points and take the path less-traveled, gathering non-existent nodes?

As far as I know, those are now all things that you unlock.

My point is that the leveling experience is on rails now, like a traditional WoW clone. You can only “do what you want” to a small degree, before the game will remind you that “no, that is not something you get to do yet – keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times!”

I mean, I guess you can still do EotM. If you consider that “doing what you want.”

People don’t like change that is at the heart of it.

Somewhat true, but for me, the saddest part is that now GW2’s leveling system is showing itself to be (drumroll…) every generic leveling system in any MMO ever (e.g. “just another WoW clone”).

So far, the only major difference I can think of is that you don’t actually need to pick up any quests, like in Generic MMO Leveling 101. Instead, you just follow the arrow and it does that step for you.

It’s the tragic loss of yet another unique and interesting game system because, “People don’t understand games.” It is the same kind of thing that happened with SWG. That game had an amazing system in its pre-CU form, but the fact was that it didn’t sell well enough.

WoW set the financial bar way too high for everybody.

As for a large company, Anet barely do ads now a day, they rely mostly on word-to-ear communication of the community, I recluted 2 co workers, 1 friend, 2 cousins, I was excited for the game, all of them are avid MMO players overall, only 1 of them remains, and none recommends the game anymore, just like I wouldnt anymore.

Well that’s just the thing. From the look of it, they’re now going for bottom-of-the-barrel-never-played-a-video-game-before audience. And I’d be astounded if they didn’t already predict fallout from veterans due to these changes.

The way I see it, they are making a financial gamble, banking on revenue from the super-mega-casual crowd, at the expense of a chunk of loyal players.

Not just because of gold cost.

I don’t think you can get much more than 40 levels anyway and that’s getting 400 on every profession. I suppose if you’re super rich, you could go to 500, but holy crap that’d be one expensive alt.

Yeah but even leveling to 60 would be enough for most people. I doubt most would worry about having to run 20 levels in EoTM, or just running around Sparkfly.

It’s a terribly costly method either way. That was my point.

Again, by design. Did you ever play McDonald’s monopoly when they had it out. One property was ultra rare and all the other ones you can get.

They want people to get the easy ones and be left with one.

Because if it was all RNG a lot of people wouldn’t do it at all. This is part of game design theory. Gamers often have inertia and need a push. It’s true in all games. The games are designed to push people in certain directions. It’s done with holiday content. In older MMOs it’s done with end game zones. Keeps people together and doing stuff.

This isn’t really any different.

Which is absolutely true…

Except that they introduced several sets that directly contradict this design methodology, such as the rare regalia and the exotic thingamajig-whatever-its-called.

I have mixed feelings on this. I’m sure the prices will go down eventually, but they are never going to as low as they once were (as would be expected). The problem is, making 95% of a collection easy to get and the final 5% based on RNG or paying some big jump in currency is just… jarring (ba-dum tsh).

No, but seriously, it would be like if the rare regalia set had an exotic piece thrown in there that you need to acquire. It’s just kind of weird.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad idea, but it’s going to trip people up. A lot.

Yes I think it should be an option. I would think it would be trivial to patch in aswell since the implementation exists to toggle it on and off already.
Honestly the feature should have already existed, recent changes have just highlighted the oversight.
Anytime something can be placed can potentially be spammed by many users it should have a toggle to keep the playing field clear of obstruction. The same that I can turn player names of so the screen is not a big green mess. See. It’s nice to see players names without having to press ctrl however the potential to have to many green player names on the screen at once warranted a toggle to hide the names.

edit: sorry the grammer of the past 2 paragraghs is not so great however I think the ideas presented come through just fine. English is not my first language and it is getting very late.

No worries. It is late for me as well and I’m not a stickler for grammar anyway, so you’re good.

I am usually 100% in favor of more customization options. I just feel like in this case it would be nothing more than a band-aid that undermines the point of commander tags being something that are visible map-wide.

On the one hand, I would love to be able to shut out the noise, even myself. On the other hand, I would hate to be a serious commander and have half the people ignoring me, out of a mixture of forgetting to toggle tags on and generally not paying attention.

I am just imagining people constantly asking “do we have a commander?” only to realize that they have tags turned off and forgot. >.<

New TP Sell Interface Confusing

It’s missing the projected profit. I know the old one wasn’t correct but this was the perfect time to fix that.

The sell count should be set to sell max automatically or at least have a button to instantly set the value to max.

These are the glaring problems to me. ^

Otherwise, first impression is that it works pretty well. I just find that I’m probably going to start ignoring the listing/exchange fees completely, unless I’m selling something really valuable. I can do simple subtraction estimates in my head in a few seconds, but I don’t play this game to do math problems every time I want to sell. So it is just moving into “not going to bother at all” territory for me.

Regarding the no “sell max” option, it’s just extra tedium to grab the stupid slider and move it over every time. Also, it resets your quantity if you change from Available to Ordered, which seems like an oversight, since it doesn’t happen in reverse.

Option: Disable Commander Tag

There absolutely should be an option to turn commander tags off for the players that have no intention of using them. It falls in with all the other things on the screen I can toggle on and off.
After that they can implement whatever changes they want to the commander tags. This post is about players having an option to turn a feature off on our screens that we don’t want to have on our screens. The title does not say “What can be done to fix commander tags”. That is a very good topic but deserves it’s own thread and is a seperate issue.

I get that, but can you honestly say that you would still want a toggle off so badly if there was only 1 or 2 commanders running around at any given time?

Crafting back packs - why?

I’d say the main purpose is to provide a way for players still progressing through the levels to have a back item without relying on the extremely limited stat combinations you can get from the handful of story reward packs you get.

Yeah, for me, they are a godsend. Prior to the patch, I had basically nothing but crap backpieces. Good ones are hard to find or super expensive, more so if you want a specific stat that isn’t on one of those dang karma merchants.

No longer the case now.

This does need some kind of solution. The account-bound feature has pushed the tag situation solidly over the edge into gameplay-hurting territory.

The system has always had its share of issues – it’s just becoming more apparent now.

I don’t think a toggle setting is the answer though. The beauty of the system is being able to walk into an area and find a leader through their commander tag. A toggle just makes tags pointless – it still doesn’t solve the problem of trying to sift through and find a commander who is actually trying to be a commander.

Yeah, you can join someone’s squad, but it’s not the most robust or user-friendly of features. And it doesn’t help that squads are limited to 50 players.

The announcement could be made in all venues at the same time. The fact would still stand that somebody would be sleeping/working/school/whatever at that time and miss out on making money. Such is life. There are people who spend their game time watching the market and flipping things. Hey, if that’s fun for them, more power to them…I prefer to be out and about in Tyria.

This happens every single patch, announcement, data mining, rumors, speculation. Something becomes the next big thing and the prices spike. You’ll also see that most things that spike come back down in price. There will always be people preying on the people that must have it now must have it first!

It really just sounds like a temper tantrum to me. Op wants more money…don’t we all…and feels cheated out. /shrugs

And as I said already in a post in this thread, yes, there is no solution that will make it equal for everyone. But… letting a few select people in on it is about guaranteed to be the most unfair way to deliver the information. And disseminating through big name social media players that most of the playerbase doesn’t even know about, much less closely follow, is not a whole lot better.

No one is saying they can do it perfectly. But they can do it much better and I’ve yet to see a good argument for why they can’t.

Huge performance hit since patch (FPS)

So I fiddled with my settings a little bit. The only one that appears to have had any noticeable impact is unchecking “High Res Character Textures.” It didn’t bring my FPS back to what is “normal” level for me, but it seems to have helped a little. Makes me wonder if there is an issue pertaining to character textures and GPU?

This is what my graphics settings look like at the moment, for what it’s worth. I’m running a dual-core 3.0 GHz processor and a GTX 560 graphics card. (And don’t be deceived by the FPS number in the screenshot – it dips terribly the moment I move.)

Couldn’t find a topic on this. Basically, my FPS is terrible since the patch. I didn’t notice it at first cause I was just running around cities, but when I went and tried to do Mel Pre in Cursed Shore, I was practically getting picture frames on the second beacon.

I thought it might have to do with lots of commander tags, so I followed someone’s squad and that didn’t help at all.

As far as I know, nothing has changed on my end.

You get to choose the stats on the Exotic version. Haven’t checked the other ones, will check shortly here.

Edit: Checked the first level version and it lets you choose stats as well, so I assume it’s for all of them.

My brain hurts from the sheer stupidity I have read on this thread. Honestly people stop being a bunch of kittening whiners. You’re complaining because why? You did not get to make a profit off this when some people did? Oh they have information that I don’t because they look at guides and previews to the patch and put more effort in than I did. How dare people be like that.

Oh my god he worked more and put more effort in than I did, and got paid more than me for it, that is so unfair and my boss should compensate me for it. This is how most people on this thread sound like to me.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^this.

It’s not even true though…

For example, I’m arguing against it on principle. I probably wouldn’t have tried to profit off of it anyway, had I known sooner.
