Thief build for Fractals

Lady Minuit.3186

Hello,

Here is the build I used for fractals for a while. It also works well for WvW (but put Fleet Shadow and run signet on): http://goo.gl/qGgg8H .

Variation for more survivability : http://goo.gl/J0AZM0 .
You can also switch to Fleet Shadow if you need running while in stealth, or put on running signet.

I used this build up to 48. You can use full zerker gear instead if you don’t have knight, just be more careful.

This is a good build for support and rez downed people and still nice damage.

I actually don’t run this build anymore I now run full zerker build, because everything one shot you in 48 anyway.

Here is my new build: http://goo.gl/QyRQTF.
Lot of evades lot of damage.

Put Shadow Refuge or Smoke Screen on your bar if you feel you need it sometimes. Adapt.

Works well for WvW zerging as well. If you find yourself alone, put stealth skills on to quickly disapear and switch to Fleet Shadow.

I love using S/P and SB. Lot of evades really easy to survive. If you have a hard time on your sword, you switch to your bow for a while.

Sometimes you might want to switch to D/P for more DPS if you’re fighting a big boss, but it’s way safer on the sword. With the blood sigils, your HP will always be up and the evades will save you from one shots.

Good luck!

What is ONE change you'd make to your class?

Elementalist – weapon swapping. No other class has to pick between melee range and long range before even going into combat. Once we’re in combat, we’re stuck with what we have. If by some chance we have D/D equipped, we have no range options except conjures, which are limited. Changing to long range requires opening up the inventory and finding the other weapons to equip (having to run until out of combat before doing so).

apart from guardian…no you are right, no ranged option, so no choice I guess.

Unless I’m wrong, dagger on elementalist is 300 range. Scepter on guardian is 900. So a guardian can have both a short range and long range weapon equipped and switch between them in combat. If an elementalist goes into a battle with dagger equipped, we’re stuck at 300 range in combat.

well, yes a scepter is 900, but you wont hit anything that is moving, that walks away, or which is not totally stationary. So it may aswell be a melee weapon.
Its possibly the most useless weapon in the game for ranged combat. Its got some use, and its ok for solo pve, but for anything else its just plain pants.

Sounds like scepter could use some improvements then. Or maybe increase the range on staff? I’ve only played a guardian to mid 20’s, so I’m not as familiar with the class.

To get things straight once and for all: scepter is a 1200 range weapon on Guardians: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Orb_of_Wrath
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Smite
It is kinda slow moving though, so if you think that should be fixed then good idea, but the range is already 1200.
If traited properly though, scepter on guard can be their highest DPS, so you want to be careful here.

Hello,

Here are my ideas to make all classes more enjoyable and interresting. I have all level 80 classes and play them regularly so I am not too biaised, but my main is a thief.
I hope they look at this thread, because I see a lot of very good ideas. These ideas might be OP or might not be, but there are always ways to adjust things to be fair.
I love all classes and I am just trying to make things better and give Arenanet ideas.

Thief

  • Give them a weapon that has 1200 range on auto-attack like everyone else. So many times you needs to have 1200 range (WvW, Fractals, pulling in general). Even guardians have the 1200 scepter.
  • Need more underwater stealth skills.
  • Higher base HP pool.
  • Give them more than just F1 skill. Add F2, F3, F4. I think all classes should have F1 to F4 skills.
    People suggested venoms, but instead you could have variants of stealing with different effect or specific things you steal.
    F1: steal a common object (same as current F1)
    F2: steal a weapon that grants you an attack buff (Might, Fury or Retaliation)
    F3: steal an item that protects you (Aegis, Protection or Regeneration)
    F4: steal an item that gives you mobility (Stability, Vigor or Swiftness + Stealth)
    Balance as necessary.

Mesmer

  • Need a permanent running 25% faster signet, skill or trait.
  • Need decent high heel boots similar to Blood Prince town outfit… :P

Engineer

  • Need a permanent running 25% faster signet, skill or trait.
  • Make Bomb kit #1 auto-attack like in underwater. You’re giving your engineers RSI (for real).
  • Add 1 more melee weapon (other than kits).
  • Give them weapon swap while out of combat.

Guardian

  • Need a permanent running 25% faster signet, skill or trait.

Necromancer

  • Make the minions more controlable and give possibility to sacrifice them. See suggestion below.
  • Give them more than just F1 skill. Add F2, F3, F4. I think all classes should have F1 to F4 skills.
    F1: Dead Shroud. (Same old)
    F2: Verata’s Sacrifice. Self inflict a stack a bleeding for each minion under your control and grant them regneration.
    F3: Taste of Death. Destroy your minions and heal allies in the areas for each minion destroyed.
    F4: Death Nova. Destroy your minions which cause damage to the targets in the area and add confusion, torment, bleeding, blind and weakness for each minion destroyed.
    Balance as necessary.

Elementalist

  • Buff their resilience a little.
  • Give them weapon swap while out of combat.

Ranger

  • Change the pet mechanic into an utility.
    When it’s on your bar, your F1-F4 skills are changed to pet control skills similar to what we have now.
    Improve the pet to be much stronger and resilient and make it more obedient.
    To do so, your pet should mimic you.
    When you dodge, it dodges. When your invisible, the pet becomes invisible and when you stow your pet, it stays stowed until you say so.
    No coming out when you go in the water or attack or anything.

    Add Guard mode to the existing modes (So Aggressive, Guard, Passive).
    Aggressive: attack enemies on sight. If the ranger is attacking a specific target, the pet will target that foe. Grant the pet Fury.
    Guard: attack enemies that attacks the master. Grant the pet Protection.
    Passive: do not attack at all, even if the F2 skill is used. Grant Regeneration to the pet.
    Finally, let us choose the special ability for our pet (F2) so we don’t have to be torn between practicality and look. If possible it would be great to be able to choose among all the existing F2 skills, but it might not make sens in some cases.
  • When your pet is not equipped, your F1-F4 skills are changed to preparations. Preparations takes 2 seconds to cast and last x amount of times.
    F1: Read the wind. Arrows move faster and stack vulnerability on target.
    F2: Glass Arrows. Gives you penetrating arrows that bleeds and criple your targets. Deals extra damage to bleeding foes.
    F3: Ignite Arrows. Explode on contact dealing damage to nearby ennemies and set them on fire.
    F4: Chocking Gas. Spread poison and weakness and interrupt nearby foes.
    Balance as necessary.

Warrior

  • Allow warriors to move while using hundred bladed.
  • Give them more than just F1 skill. Add F2, F3, F4. I think all classes should have F1 to F4 skills.
    F1: Same as before.
    F2: Warrior’s Endurance. Regen Endurance until adrenaline is depleated. Gain Vigor at the end.
    F3: Gladiator’s Defense. Grant retaliation until adrenaline is depleated. Gain Regeneration at the end.
    F4: Bonetti’s Defense. Block all attacks and deal damage for each blow blocked until adrenaline is depleated. Gain Fury at the end.
    Balance as necessary.

There might be other things, but I can’t think of anything else right now sorry.

Thanks for reading.

In no particular order:
1. Deyable weapons and back pieces;
2. Account wide dye collection;
3. Skins locker for PvE;
4. Guild halls and housing;
5. Salvage ascended gear into ascended mats or ectos;
6. (greedy I know) 1200 range weapon for thief.

Lady Minuit said use Scepter/Dagger, but that’s a condition set and most players agree that leveling necro with condition is much slower. I personally switched from conditions -> power while leveling cuz I found it too slow and hard to stay alive against multiple foes.

Hello,

I agree that condition damage is difficult to level with, which is why I would never recommend it for that purpose.

Scepter/Dagger do have some conditions which are just an added bonus here, but it also has good AOE base damage (Grasping Dead, Deathly Swarm, Enfeebling Blood) and longer range than axe which is the reason I suggested using it. It is safer and makes it much easier for lower levels. I never recommended him to use condition damage, but to go if possible Power/Crits.

Axe/Focus and Dagger/Warhorn is great for high end builds, but for leveling it can be a little harder in my opinion.

In the end he can always try both and make up is own mind, my comments are only from my own experience.

Hello,

For leveling I recommend running a minion build, which is very useful in keeping the heat of you as you level up.

You can trait in Death Magic (if you think you need more toughness) or go full damage with Spite and Soul Reaping.
Use life stealing food for precision and survivability and oil maintenance for extra crits.

Use Power/Precision gear if you can, which will help you kill faster. If you feel you’re too fragile you can try put some toughness gear on, but in the end the faster you kill the safer you are.

For your utility skills use Bone Minions, Bone Fiend, Shadow Fiend and Flesh Golem.
You can drop Shadow Fiend for Signet of the Locust for extra mobility. It comes in handy when doing exploration.

For your weapons use Staff and Scepter/Dagger for the satefy of the range and the convenience of the AOEs.

Swap between your 2 sets and spam your AOEs. Your minions should be holding all the aggro, which makes it easy to kill large groups all clustered together.

Use Death Shroud when your’re in trouble, otherwise try to keep your minions up at all times.

Once you hit level 80 I recommend watching this video and run the build featured in it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG5fqtiP2x0 .

The guide is very comprehensive and the build will give you maximum DPS.

Good luck and have fun!

List of pros and cons for mesmer and thief in my humble opinion.

Mesmer – Pros:

  • Mesmer is much easier and safer on the lower levels;
  • You can use clones which is very useful in taking the heat for you;
  • You have decent resilience even as a berserker;
  • You have some stealth (although not as good as thief);
  • With greatsword the more distance between you and your enemy the more damage you do, which makes for good survivability;
  • If you want to get up close no problem, use sword/sword or sword/focus;
  • kitten in WvW and PvP;
  • Don’t get nerf too often;
  • Longest range after ranger (seems to go a lil over 1200). Great for pulling or sniping;
  • Usually easy to get in groups for PvE.

Mesmer – Cons:

  • No constant running unless you use traveler runes;
  • Kinda squishy at close range, but not as bad as eles;
  • Tricky to learn. Takes a while before you know all of their secret and even then you might not know all.

Thief – Pros:

  • Highly mobile class;
  • Very evasive;
  • Long lasting stealth;
  • Good DPS;
  • Efficient in close combat;
  • Almighty in WvW and PvP.

Thief – Cons:

  • Lack of clones/minions;
  • Low HP pool and fragile;
  • Bad initiative management in the lower levels;
  • Requires a lot of skills to survive;
  • No 1200 range weapon;
  • Get nerfed regularly;
  • Bad reputation in dungeons and potential difficulty to group for PvE.

I found a way that works well for me:

  • Gather all orichalcum and ancient wood nodes on all your characters (go to gw2nodes.com to help you);
  • Do your daily exploration dungeons paths (AC p1, p2; TA F, U; CoF p1; HoTW p1 are the easiest in my opinion) and exchange tokens for rares (lvl 68+) or exotics which you can salvage into ectos;
  • Watch gw2states.com or gw2stuff.com for world bosses to get daily chest rewards;
  • Do guild missions whenever you can for free rares;
  • Do champs trains in Queensdale (lower levels) or Frostgorge Sound (lvl. 80) when you’re done with everything else.

Repeat this every time you can and you will make money.

If possible get yourself a static group to help you with dungeons because it’s much easier with people that knows you.

Good luck!

Cross-character dye collection

in Suggestions

Lady Minuit.3186

Originally it was supposed to be account wide as stated in one of the early blog post, but they changed their idea sometimes before launch. I suspect it’s because dyes were easy enough to get with their new system.

In the early design dyes would be grown from plants in your home instance and it would take like a day to grow unless you used some item from the gem shop. With this system it would have been harder to acquire dyes I suppose which explain why it would have made sense to make them account wide, but with the new system maybe not.

To be honest I wish they were account wide too with some of them being worth 50g it would be awesome.

To be honest I find it sad that thief is the only class with no possibility for 1200 range. We use to have cluster bomb but apparently that was a bug… At least should make it that if you trait in it it has longer range (either short bow or pistol).
Well I guess this is the stealth curse.

Elementalist and non weapon swapping

in Suggestions

Posted by: Lady Minuit.3186

Lady Minuit.3186

I can understand why ele doesn’t have weapon swap but never understood why engi does. I guess it’s because of their kits?

Yes, kits give you the ability of instantly (and almost no CD) swap your full weaponset. You can “gear” up for melee range or long range with your kits. Other classes need to do this with the two weapon sets.

Either way the suggestion for off combat weapon swap is a good idea imho. It saves you from having to go top your inventory all the time and give you the same extra space as everybody else.

Well, “give more space” is a bag argument in online games. You’ll be told to manage it better or buy more.
The two reasons are “convenience”. It’s just a pain to keep your item window open and manually swap the weapons.
And “different amount of weapons”. Both classes tend to swap the weapons between a dual hand and two single handed weapons. While switching a dual hand weap with two single hand gives not problems, the reverse does. When I have two pistols and swap to a rifle, one of the exotic pistols will be treated as “just looted”, not to into the invisible bag.

Sorry I really didn’t want to get involved that much in this thread, but this was just my humble opinion and I see you disagree which is fine, but I really don’t see the problem with giving them weapon swap while out of combat. Now maybe it’s not possible for technical reasons I can’t tell. But for sure this would really be no different than going to your inventory and swapping weapon this way. It would be just as you said more convenient. Convenient good in my opinion.

Lady Minuit.3186

First, I’d love to have stylish lose long hair options with flowing movement and some flower accessories or even some pony tail, buns or more intricate arrangements. The current styles almost always use the same materials and are very static. Maybe add some movement to it and some new materials to revamp them? There are already some very good ideas in this thread but would be nice to see vines, grass, different shapes of leaves, weeping willow and some flowers, fruits or nuts accessories maybe.

For the faces I think we have enough in between faces so people that wants that kind of faces are happy, but for those who wants beautiful or ugly they can never have it, but have to compromise one way or another. So I think more extremes would be wise to add to the game. I would personality love a very beautiful one to go with my long hair and flower accessories…

Here are some tweaks that I’d like to see as well.
If you don’t plan in making more Sylvari specific armor please at least fix the stretching issue with armors other than cultural. The legs in particular always look really huge even on the smaller body type which isn’t really my favorite anyway. Even the Twilight Arbor armor doesn’t stretch properly. Which leaves most Sylvari to choose between 3 sets (9 if you count all the different types), and so we all look the same.

Next, Sylvari big eyes. Ok I get that they are child like because they are only been in Tyria for 25 years at most, but on some faces when they go idle, their eyes get so big it’s silly. I had to make one of my Sylvari’s eyes the smallest possible because I just couldn’t bare it anymore. So please just make the big eye animation smaller would be great.

Thanks!

For storyline there is no problem. Just reset it and make people redo it. This way it also allows you to change order.
For being illogical there is no problem, we already have dragons and sex change? (can’t change into dragons though )
For cultural gear it becomes unusable but it could be transmutated.
As for Anet stating they won’t do it well, the things they said they will do and didn’t do or said they won’t do and did probably can’t fit their headquarters. And as they say, only crazy people never change their mind.

+1 order change through quest.
