Only Asura will do front flips when they smash something with a hammer. Quite awesome, IMO.
I just took 3 hours in character creation, even though the face is not 100% the same I would say about 90% is, the eye’s can be created on certain faces the same as Rox.
Yeah I’ve seen a few posts in the Charr forums with pics of characters made to look ‘young’ or with soft features and Rox reminds me of those…they were equally creepy too.
Until they start sprouting boobs, I don’t think there’s grounds to complain. They aren’t changing any of the NPCs or your PC, they are just adding more looks and options and, again, until those options start to develop into Charr boobs or what have you, why make a huge fuss about it?
Very well put KorKor.
Not really.
I’m going to take a guess and throw a stone out there and say you are still a fan of modern anime. Aren’t you?
What’s your definition of ‘modern anime’? I’ll admit, I still keep up with the same series I have since I was in high school. Dunno how that makes a difference. You’re obviously some outraged internet annon who’s put more effort into your rage than need be.
I mean, you’ve got no context besides a paragraph and a picture. No scale, no background information but you’re full on ready to light flames for your ignorance.
My opinion is, I generally don’t care for Rox’s design (specifically the horns + face combo) but then I also don’t like the cub design either since they really have no design behind them, they are simply shrunken Charr models…but you’ve puffed up your chest to defend that, masking your intent with praise of ‘good design’.
But to each their own. Not everyone has a decent sense of design as it varies with taste.
In fact, If the warrior had some idiotic name like “Xx Pwnzor xX” or some crap like that, I would pick the ranger.
But what if the Ranger’s name was “Cat Humper”? Then you’re back at square one.
Regardless of dungeon and you don’t know either of them, both of them asked at the exact same time.
The bigger question is, how is it even possible for two people to ask at the same time? Obviously whoever’s name is on top in chat is the person that asked first. There is no hypothetical here, it literally would be whoever asked first.
That’s why it’s called hypothetical. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/hypothetical
Maybe you joined your server’s TS and they both ask on TS at the exact same time. There ya go…. quit ignoring the true point of the question.
If they’re in teamspeak then they are probably people I can stand to listen to, i.e. friends. Whoever wants to run it more would be the person who likely would go. If we’re all guildies, why would playing profession favorites even be an issue here?
That basically destroys whatever hypothetical you’d bring up because it’d still would have nothing to do with what profession they decided to bring. Hell, it’d probably be settled by a coin toss or some BS chance of luck in that case.
Why are you even trying? Seriously…

Anime Rox or is that Chibi? I forget how to spell the name for the huge eye’d small faced characters in Anime.
Chibi is big head with a small body (Asura closer resemble that) while general anime accentuate the eyes (some artists far more than others).
Her face is completely disproportionate not only with her eyes but to the rest of her body wow.
Some cats are like that though…but I have to admit, when I happen to cross a cat with large eyes on my way somewhere, it does tend to creep me out.
It’s perfectly normal to want best efficiency when doing anything in my opinion.
Wanting it, sure, but expecting it and demanding it to the exclusion of all else? Not so much.
Um, this is the internet. It seethes entitlement.
As I run threw dangerous areas, I use decoy to distract and get through them. But recently, I either don’t go invisible and possibly die, or go invisible and they still hit me, and possibly die lol. Really annoying to be honest.
OMG I think I got this too!
One of my ‘skipping’ set ups is blink, decoy, veil and off-hand torch but I noticed that for the stealths, the only one that seems to ‘work’ (and by work, I mean stop the NPCs from attacking me) is veil. The prestige doesn’t seem to stop them from chasing me and hitting me while I’m invisible nor does decoy.
The only way I can make those stealth skills work is to use them before getting aggroed (and therefore they won’t aggro >_>) but yeah, that’s not quite deal when the stealths are so short. You either have to chain them, them not working or they drop when you’re right in the middle of them.
Or maybe it’s just me…I’m not expecting them to leave me alone, but I sort of expect them to chase after the decoy instead of an invisible me
When people talk about Rangers being useless because they gear up in MF gear or are plinking away at max range…
…surely that isn’t the extent of this profession, is it?
Then wouldn’t that make it a very good joke since it got you riled up?
That name can’t have been available when they made this NPC…Is her name Rox [Warband name]? I’m pretty sure a lot of characters, Asura or not, would have wanted Rox or Roxx as a name.
Why do people seem more angry about class discrimination rather than the profession-balance issue that causes it.
My take? Because it doesn’t matter if you’re a full warrior/mesmer/guardian group, if you don’t understand the content and can play around it, you’ll still get stomped. The people insisting you be one of those classes and implying you’d be better and more efficient as one instead of some other chosen profession has no ground since it doesn’t matter. You picked necromancer (or whatever) so how much more effective you’d be as w/m/g doesn’t matter.
Also, the developers are working on improving the professions’ various build options so it’s not like people aren’t concerned with balance as much as discrimination. It’s just that part falls on the community’s hands to change, not particularly the developers.
Blurred Frenzy is 2 seconds and hits for around the same, has shorter range, and doesn’t even heal allies.
It’s that simple, the DPS of cone of cold is that much better than Rapid Fire, while being aoe and having a healing component.
No, blurred frenzy does quite a bit more damage. I don’t even know why you’re mentioning mesmer skills in comparison to Cone of Cold. They aren’t the same thing.
But then I guess if you’re going with the sheep approach of listening and blindly following what a mass says, why not just ask them? As them which is better, Cone of Cold or Rapid Fire. AFAICS, you’re just blinded by bias and that whatever aspect of Ranger you hand pick, it has to be worse than something else (and completely dismiss the fact you’re hand picking what you’re comparing to from a profession that has the best of a particular type of skill).
There’s a reason I don’t listen to stuff like that. It has little to no context, sidesteps a football field’s worth of circumstances and justifies its stance with “because everyone agrees” without pointing to how they came to that conclusion.
Keep calling your opinions facts however much you want, but when the consensus runs against you, all this bs you’re spewing will not appeal to people. Because warriors didn’t just become popular due to some post on a forum.
Um, you’re the one calling your opinions facts (as well as a few other trolls here). While Warriors may have become popular due to trials and testing, that doesn’t mean Rangers became unpopular for the same reason. I know it must be hard to wrap your head around such a complex concept but give it a shot. The likelihood Ranger stigma will change is very little, and the only thing I could see changing it is improvements to the profession, not because it currently can’t perform at all but so that players will push aside their previous misconceptions and give the profession another try.
But feel free to answer the question as to ranger utility being comparable, and do show the math about condition damage specs outperforming knight and berserker stat combos. So far you just make a statement and expect people to take you on your word just because you contradicted the majority of posters.
I’ll make a list of some of the things you side-stepped here:
-You’ve jumped around to so many professions to badmouth Ranger utility. From guardians to elementalist, warrior to mesmer and so forth.
-I’m not expecting anyone to take my word for anything, I’d rather you question your own concepts about the game as a whole.
-You must think a condition spec cannot do 2-3k auto attacks with 130+ bleed per stack and 1k+ burn every second.
Example: Kalla Mindbreaker, of the Mind warband.
Wouldn’t it be better if the warband’s name was ‘Break’? So guardian in that warband would be something like SoulBreaker or a warrior SpineBreaker? Not many professions deal with the mind unless the whole warband were mesmers.
How about some simple bacon. Lots of pigs running around.
There was a thread about this.
Bacon would probably be the most overpowered food. It should have divinity stats (+50 to all stats) but maybe -25% swiftness duration
Would you ever do a dungeon with four “5-Sig-Wars” with Soldiers Equipment? I hope not.
Why not?
I guess if the run isn’t as smooth as silk, it’ll give me cooties…or even that it can’t be smooth because it’s a ‘noob’ build and must make everything 10-fold harder. The only place I could see that set-up likely failing is high-level fractals.
PS: Yeah I’d take an all 5-sig warrior group, so long as they work as a team. What I can’t stand is players not taking the effort to rez downed people. When I have to put my neck on the line more often because no one else is doing it, I’m usually the one paying the price. I’d rather struggle as a group than succeed as an island. Downright kitten es me off…

But if you ask an NPC where French Toast originates, what answer would they give?
Not saying you can’t have stuff in the game with real world references, but how immersion breaking is it to have an NPC in Tyria talking about a country that doesn’t exist in their world? It’d be like if they started talking about Asia or the Netherlands or some such.
Because Anet thinks fish are friends and not food?
Can Rangers use Crabs as pets?
- Not following the advice of more experienced players.
I’ve lately had a 5 Signet Warrior who refused to change his Utility Skills. In the party have also been a P/V/T Guardian without Wall of Reflection, Stand your Ground or Retreat. And a Mesmer using 3 Signets and Hounds of Balthasar. They all didn’t listen, died at fighting, died at running, died at.. everything. And didn’t even do damage.
This is a pet peeve of mine and I’d add it to a list of Dungeon Etiquette for others to follow:
Don’t go demanding others to change their set-ups, be it armor, utilities, traits, etc. It’s very kitteny to go around bossing people like that and it isn’t a necessity for an encounter to have a specific skill or set-up to win. If a warrior wants to run 5 signets, let them run 5 signets. You’re not going to die without FGJ or SiO. If they end up dying even with help, let that be a learning point for them.
I’d say it sort of balances out.
Asura Hundred Blades animation is plain awesome while Charr Hundred Blades looks like they aren’t even paying attention to where they swing, they just flop it around hoping to catch something in their swinging arc.
What I don’t get is why people consider kodan an option. They have nearly 0 customization to them. That makes them pretty bad for playable.
My guess is, the Kodan and Tengu you see in the game right now are placeholders. If/when more playable races are introduced, I’d expect all those placeholders would have changes made to them using the new options.
Although…can the Kodan be something other than a polar bear? Or is that just their thing?
I dunno, I think my asura’s eyes are pretty bright. The eyecolor is from the makeover kit.
Yeah those are pretty bright eyes, I agree. Wish we had more colors though. I may have to save up for a makeover kit.
how come everyone are into tengu? what is so special about ’em?
I think they’d be quite open for customization. For Asuras, it’s the ears and eyes, for Charr the horns and fur patterns, the Sylvari are very colorful and I think the Tengu could have colorful plumage too.
Also, never got much chance to play avian characters in the past. Cat/dog people? Little aliens? Even planty people, I’ve gotten a chance to mess with. The big gorilla MMO already has bears though so perhaps we should steer toward something a bit rarer?
Well what about bows? It’s not quite traditional for sorcerers to use bows but it’s not unheard of (unlike daggers). Also, bow isn’t a dueling weapon which is the concept of Mesmer so no bow for them.
Honestly, something that looked like bare hands casting, like gauntlets, would fit much better than a greatsword.
That, or 1H sword, that would also fit nicely. Or longbows. We could use a long range single target DPS weapon.
I did have a write-up on my idea for Elementalist Longbow. I think it could be a fun little weapon
OP didn’t say anything about changing stuff, just more options.
I think my Charr looks pretty handsome despite all the sharp teeth. I think it’s in the facial expression, although some faces are pretty ugly…but that goes for all the races.
But then you might as well say every profession should be changed for each class.
Engineers
Sylvari would get seed/plant turrets.
Humans would get a less steampunk feel.
Norn would get a more naturey feel without being actual plants. (Possible wurms, as well.)
I would go the opposite direction. Engineers of all races are particularly crafty individuals. They should simply have more kits that touch on all races’ technology. Have some energy turrets like the NPC Asura engineers have, some planty brambles that immobilize foes that get near it, some short duration siege weapon one can take hop on and use…not sure what Norn do, the only thing I could think of is Flintstone-esque tech ‘powered’ by woodland creatures >_<
But yeah, there should just be a wide variety of kits (perhaps replacing a lot of the ones available) with a theme that encompasses the technology of all of Tyria.
I’d say I’m on a different scale as an MMO player as I don’t consider myself good at them but I do consider myself decent at games in general.
In MMOs that I’ve played, I only ever reached max levels in about 2 of them and only got around to doing the ‘end game’ stuff in 1 of those (not including GW2). I do love me some retro-games or your typical twitch based beat-em-up like Devil May Cry series (Oh! Or Castlevania…love that series). But I consider myself horrible at MMOs because I don’t care much for the stat-grind. Even in this game, I tend to get my exotics and am happy with that (although my Elementalist has ascended).
When it comes to actual control, I was tainted by my first MMO FFXI and its unadjustable controls. I ended up migrating that same control scheme to every MMO I’ve played when possible but it really isn’t viable here as you NEED to be constantly readjusting the camera and aiming area skills with the mouse. So I learned the wasd movement scheme from scratch and bought a gaming mouse/keyboard (was a deal! came free with my new 2nd monitor…there were speakers too but they weren’t very good).
What I like about this game is it’s like a console game…but it’s an MMO. I’ve technically reached ‘end game’ for PvE stuff but it doesn’t require you to have maxed gear (tried 30+ fractals…it’s cool but also very limiting).
One must admit some of the medium armor choices are just adorable on Asura. I’m still swooning over that mini-cowboy Asura pic in the cutest thread…
One of these days, I need to try running a dungeon with MF gear…I’ve honestly never tried >_>
I don’t even use MF food…
So…when can we expect Anet to add a new race? Anyone have an inkling of a clue when that expansion will rear its head?
I’m sort of wanting to play a Ranger but I already have a Charr, two Asuras and a Sylvari and find Human and Norn not my taste…A Tengu ranger is my ideal choice
Cone of Cold is bad damage, like 5k conal aoe damage plus the healing (around 1.2k, on a low cd) is bad! What a sad troll.
Ice Spike is not instant because it crits for 5k and applies 5 vulnerability, that’s why.
You’re exaggerating your numbers. In and of itself, there’s nothing wrong with stretching numbers because of differing builds and boons, but statements made without context like this can be viewed as lies. So stop lying.
I generally have a more offensive focused build on my elementalist with 95% crit damage and I’m likely hitting for upwards of 4k when everything crits and no might stacks/vulnerability…but I’m not specc’ed to heal. It will not heal for 1.2k as its base heal is only 740. Mines heals for 850. Also, it has a cast time of nearly 3 seconds. Even 7k damage on that cast isn’t huge.
And while Ice Spike can crit for quite high in a large AoE…it has a long delay (longer than 3 seconds).
But I’m the one who doesn’t understand how mesmers work, when my main is one, and I certainly don’t get asked to groups for restorative mantras. I get asked to groups for the 6-7k damage berserkers, 10k shatters, feedback, null field, and time warp. Occasionally the stealth utilities.
So keep talking, but until you show us a video of yourself doing 48+ as a ranger useful to your group in a way other classes are not you can shut up. Because so far I’ve yet to hear your PvE qualifications such as fractal level playing experience instead of you dodging the issue of Ranger utility. And communities rarely discriminate without reason despite what white knights like you would say.
I guess ‘saying’ you do stuff is considered qualifications? Saying what you main while spewing nonsense about other professions is the point of contention here, sir. And there is a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong (loooOOOOOOooOOonnng) history of communities discriminating for no reason or for little reason to justify their behavior. Label me with whatever TVtropes title you want, doesn’t change these facts.
While I enjoy my Ranger and do Dungeons with it, I have no doubt I’m having to work harder and be far more cunning to contribute as much with my Ranger as I do with my Warrior or Guardian. There is nothing relaxed about optimal Ranger play – if you aren’t lining up 2-3 targets for piercing shots every second there is more than 1 enemy on the field, you aren’t doing close to enough damage. Shortbow 1 is tracer fire – it lets you know you are lined up so you can put the 2, 4, and 5 down range when they will hit several targets.
This, I can see. The same rings true for Elementalist or Mesmer although those professions work different niches from the other professions discussed (especially the Warrior/Guardian). Although it’s likely that one can even work harder and still get less performance from Ranger comparatively, I still think much of what has been said about the profession is overstated, just like players will overstate their personal performance on other professions.
This player are good, all another – are bad.
Do you know why ppl demanding 80 Exo from runners? To make it FAST and guarantee!
6 minutes to the spider queen – it’s too long ><
And? If you cloned 5 of the OP to tackle that boss, it’d last 1 minute. If that isn’t worthwhile for a speedrun, then I think people are just too picky.
It wouldn’t make any sense. The Elementalist is the magician class, with staves, scepters, daggers, foci and wizardly things.
The “battle mage” class is the Mesmer.
Well what about bows? It’s not quite traditional for sorcerers to use bows but it’s not unheard of (unlike daggers). Also, bow isn’t a dueling weapon which is the concept of Mesmer so no bow for them.
Ideally, I feel every type of profession should use every type of weapon just like you have a soldier class using scepters and staff, and a scholar using pistols and greatswords.
Sigh.
Ele’s already have a bunch of weapons. Why not just fix the ones we have?
Staff: 1 in all 4 attunements seem to be there to just fill a slot.
Water: 2 is completely stupid. Yes vulnerability is nice but a heal would be better. At least make it a blast finisher?
Air: only air 3,4, and 5 are useful, and the cd is too long. Gust is poo because and half the time it doesn’t work right.
Focus: take the one useful, air 4 off this and put in on the useless staff air 2 where it belongs. Then scrap the rest of the skills and start over. Focus is awful.
Scepter all and all, I’d like to see the condition damaged buffed. Make fire 1 more useful but buffing it.
That is all I can think of right now.
How is Staff Air #2 useless? It’s a decently hard hitting AoE blind. Put it in your #2 attunement rotations and it works wonders but faster than the other attunement #2s.
New weapons for my ele could be cool – we certainly could use more build diversity.
Personally I dream of a shortbow ele.
No no no no
Why not? Although I’d aim for Longbow to aim for the concept of longer range.
…and my mind is in the gutter.
Not really detective work, I just happened to be involved in a discussion about Rangers in Dungeons and someone linked to a video of a Ranger’s pet Drake tanking champions and stuff. He mentioned Drakes could tank better if their heal skill worked on them instead of the enemy.
The same thread got me curious about Mesmer support and stumbled on this thread. I never played Ranger myself, only knew the bug through 2nd hand knowledge
Warrior already has widest selection of movement skills. I wouldn’t mind longer range on them though, but maybe requiring a trait for it…
You, my friend, have disproved all the naysayers that demand lvl 80 exotic runs are the most efficient.
Thank you a million times! I’ve gotta watch that again to get my own strats down.
-ahem-
Was just researching some Mesmer support builds and came across this.
I believe what you’re seeing is that Ranger’s pet is a Drake that has a glitched attack called Chomp. It’s been known to heal the target of the attack rather than the drake itself.
But hey, popping 3 shouts for 4k health when someone needs it immediately, because they are instant, and on top provide other benefits is “overestimating” value.
Yeah, it is overestimating. I’m glad you finally understand. Using shouts for heals diminishes their other uses, like being a stun breaker or to keep perma fury going. At the same time you understate build options you obviously know nothing about. You don’t know how Restorative Mantras work, what makes any of us think you’re competent with Ranger?
By all means, feel free to offer that demand for “heal” mesmers. Saying that an elementalist can’t do damage while healing is the stupidest thing I have heard so far, considering their group heals come from traits that switch into water attunement, that their heal abilities such as Cone of Cold and Ice Spike do substantial damage, and that all of these are instant and so is switching back to a damaging attunement.
Cone of Cold doesn’t do substantial damage although it does decent damage but it also doesn’t heal for much either. Neither that nor Ice Spike are instant either. Swapping attunements isn’t “doing damage while healing” since the act of swapping is instant. It’s the same as pressing a heal button.
But now I think I’ve talked you into a corner. Now you’re just trash talking. It’s all beside the point though, I’m confident Rangers will be improved over time. What they may lack in optimization now will be compensated for as changes roll out. Specifically aiming trash talk at the specific supportive skills of Ranger while pointing at 3 different professions rather underminds the argument as no profession is really going to be outperforming or even evenly performing 3 professions all the time.
(edited by Leo G.4501)
this is about you overestimating healing shout warriors and their 1.2k heal that somehow heals for 4k reliably and not 2/3 being on 60 second cooldowns.
Fwiw, my warrior has 15 points in Defense, gaining +150 Healing Power. Shouts, when I use them, heal for ~1300. Given that kind of scaling, it is unreasonable to assume that even a full investment in HP would get a shout much above 2k, if they even get there at all. Perhaps he meant 4k from using 3 shouts @ ~1333 each?
As far as shouts go, only Fear Me has a long CD (80), with On My Mark at 30, FGJ and Shake It Off at 25; trait reduction can take that to 64, 24, 20 and 20. There was a time when shouts were considered good, but isn’t the meta thinking on warrior support leaning more toward Banners than shouts?
In PvE? Maybe a mix of both maybe?
But the build described, requiring 30 in Tactics and 15 in Defense, how much raw damage can one accomplish with it? Not saying such a build wouldn’t do good damage, but it’s far and away from the ‘huge DPS’ one comes to think of when it comes to Warriors, not to mention it locks you out of 3 utilities for it. Basically, its support versatility is limited. I think the point really being brought up was someone saying Warriors can do better damage and better support at the same time, which is what I was bringing into question.
The thing is, even with their completely different body structure, all they do is stretch the armor which is why it looks so horrible. They have to customize the armor to the body of the Charr… a lot.
This is the definition of stretched…
A. You’re looking at the most unflattering angle of that armor as there isn’t really anything in the front that needs accommodating for on a Charr.
B. You picked the most ugliest and unflattering armor for a Charr and it looks equally ugly on a human, so that distorts the point you’re making.
Looking at the same armor from the other angles, you’d be hard pressed to say the armor is stretched in the general meaning of the term. If you’re talking about sharing the same texture skins, maybe you’re right. But one simply does not stretch that skin over the Charr model without modding it to fit properly. But some armor even has features specifically unique to Charr which is a huge deal compared to other races.
A 2 sec recharge that heals for 2k, not 3k.
I can’t say I speak from large experience as a Mantra using Mesmer, but checking the wiki and a quick swap of traits just to see for myself, Restorative Mantras heals for 2600ish HP at base. Restorative Mantras is also a Master trait in a trait line that grants healing power, unlike the healing shouts trait. My mesmer, with no healing power gear and 20 points in Inspiration heals for around 2800 HP which is a lot closer to 3k than your supposed healing shouts warrior with no healing gear healing for 2k when the base heal is only 1.2k.
Whatever means you’re using to buff that up to 2k so that you can get your 4k healing reliably, you can do to mesmer and get more healing over time.
2 secs of doing nothing but casting the ability, because there’s this thing called opportunity cost. And that’s coming at the cost of an ethereal field/group condi/boon removal, Decoy (stunbreaker/safe rez), or the critical utility of reflection (and confusion for projectiles).
Again, only need 1 mantra for a mantra healing build. Can’t say from experience though but I have read guides that express this. That means you have 2 slots for your utility which can leave room for your reflect/cleaning field and a stun breaker.
There is nothing valuable in a healing mesmer. An elementalist can do the job better while not gutting his damage in the process.
Mesmers are different. Unlike Elementalist or Warrior, a Mesmer can indeed do damage while doing other things like rezzing or casting mantras. They have these things called illusions and those illusions will attack a foe the mesmer targets when summon. I hope that’s lesson enough for you today.
Next, I’m guessing you’re going to harp on phantasm builds and how you’re weak and/or a noob for not going full shatter. I’ll arrest that case by saying you’re veering off the subject as this was not about DPS mesmer and going for optimal damage, this is about you overestimating healing shout warriors and their 1.2k heal that somehow heals for 4k reliably and not 2/3 being on 60 second cooldowns.
Quite frankly your responses strike me as ignorant and iconic of people who don’t give a kitten about efficiency. A warrior doesn’t need to build for healing power to heal substantially — you’re lying. Healing power scales horribly as a stat to begin with.
No, you’re lying if you’re trying to spout that a Warrior can do substantial healing and support with healing shouts. Face it. The support is weak and you’d probably do more/better getting might duration up or stacking fury than dipping into healing shouts with nothing to make those shouts worthwhile for healing. If you’re going to attribute an aspect of play that a Warrior can outdo a Ranger at, don’t lie and try and cover the fact a warrior would sacrifice a lot of their offensive edge for it.
Is anyone going to comment where these rumors originated?
