Why not a WvW Tournament?

II find this slightly ironic given that in Warhammer people were discontent with uneven sides and pointed to a third realm as the solution. Clearly, GW2 is evidence that this isn’t the case. There are still nightcap and blobbing issues.

That’s because ranking should not be based on PPT. That encourages servers to get as much PPT for themselves as possible, resulting in server #2 stealing points from server #3 (and vice versa) instead of fighting server #1.

You need an incentive for each server to hit the strongest server. A scoring system where the winner server gets 10 points, #2 gets 5, and #3 gets 4, or something like that, encourages servers to double team whoever’s leading. (Or even winner takes all: winner gets 1 points, losers get 0).

If Anet were really interested in addressing WvW’s problems, this might be something that can be trialed for a few months. But they’re not.

Pretty much happened to ET. Several of their main WvW guilds all landed in NSP within a month. I don’t think it made too much of a difference to the NSP population, but taking the majority of the WvW Guilds from a T8 server made ET a wasteland.

You’d be surprised. NSP population is not large.

Really? How many servers did China start with and how many are there now?

Is hoping for a dungeon recipe

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lord Kuru.3685

If the recipes were common, then the items produced by them would also be common. The only reason those have value is that they are rare (especially since most have stats that can be replicated elsewhere).

I am completely aware of that. I was just wondering how rare exactly the recipes are.

btw I tried killing the troop commander and the elite that spawns after, then killed Tazza. No special chest except the champ’s loot chest. I guess the champ has nothing to do with it because the wiki says Tazza drops it.

Any boss on the path can drop the recipe. That’s how all recipes work. It’s a myth that you have to kill the champ with Tazza. The fact that they removed Tazza’s loot drop makes it more unlikely you get the recipe as that’s one fewer boss on that path that has a probability of dropping it.

I’ve done SEp1 hundreds of times (looking at how many tokens I have from that dungeon) and have never gotten the recipe drop. In fact I’ve never gotten any recipe drop from any dungeon over 1000+ runs?

Now that I think about it, if you still want to farm the recipe knowing the bad RNG, try this: do all the bosses up to Tazza, then restart the dungeon, Tazza isn’t going to give you your drop anyway.

Following Anet’s lead:

  • Arrow cart week: Players can’t use any skills: only siege. Arrow carts cost 0 supply.
  • Skyhammer week: All land between towers is replaced by a chasm and towers are connected by thin boards. If you fall off you die.
  • Zerg week: The server with the most players on a map receive triple PPT boost. The server with the least players receives PPT at half the usual rate.
  • Transfer week: if you transfer during this week, you get a +5000 boost to your power permanently.
  • Night cap week: PPT is tripled between 1am and 10am pacific time for both NA and Euro servers (sorry, Anet doesn’t have enough WvW dev resources to determine the appropriate Euro time periods for this event).
  • sPvP week: If you try to enter WvW, you enter the PvP lobby instead.

Here’s one that’s actually good:

Quaggan lake week: the bloodlust area is removed and Quaggan lake is restored.

Another example is AI that reacts to the player. What this means is when the player performs an action, the AI reacts with an appropriate counter. This is also frustrating design because all it really does is remove options from the player. Certain actions will simply be countered. Again, it’s not engaging because the pattern is still predictable.

This is a good point. If you give mobs interrupts, they have lightning fast “reflexes” so your big skills will get interrupted. You won’t find this fun, especially since you know the AI is “cheating”. Also, looking at Anet’s love of AI spamming pushbacks, knockdowns, they’d probably give mobs no-recharge interrupts and you’d just be standing there with all your skills interrupted.

Careful what you wish for.

Soloing Tazza? (SE path 1)

Lord Kuru.3685

I haven’t fought her solo but wouldn’t it be easier to agro her to one side of the room instead out of it without agroing the other champ and fight her in that room?

You mean the corner opposite the stairs? That used to be a good spot, but can it still be done with the modified aggro of the champ?

Plus, depending on your profession, if you have any minions, that corner is a bit small when she does her teleport attack as each minion will spawn a red circle.

And in the corner you have to fight the camera as well as Tazza.

Minions ultimately don’t matter because she kills them instantly with one teleport. I tried using minions because I figured having more bodies would prevent her aggro from resetting and it seemed to work until she killed them.

You can give minions aegis right before she teleports. Or, some necro minions have enough health to survive more than one teleports. Or, if you give her weakness, even phantasms can survive a teleport (if the RNG of weakness is with you).

lol actually she 1 shotted my flesh golem because of the overlapped AoEs from my other minions.

I think it was probably due to her losing sight of me like you said in your note on your first post. That’s really annoying with only one player. I probably won’t try soloing her again. The rest of the path was fun but that’s just tedious.

Don’t give up!

Use flesh golem and healing minion and optionally, wurm (if you have an unoccupied utility slot). With these three you can easily manage to keep them away from each other since golem is melee, healing is ranged, and the wurm you can place at range wherever you want (away from the healing minion) — they’ll survive the teleport much better this way.

You choose your gambits and the more gambits the better the reward. Simple as that.

Yet, Anet chose the failed fractal level system where now everyone does the same 5 levels and the others are completely ignored. I’d love to see metrics on how many people do each fractal level. It’s probably pretty embarrassing.

Upscale mobs, not players. 90% of the problem solved instantly as most players are level 80 anyway.

That would not work at all…

Anyway, Anet went too far with the downscaling. Downscaling os good, but full ascended should not be out-done in damage by a new player leveling.

Of course it would work. And the advantage is

  1. Players have tons of stats that need to be accounted for when scaling (the usual toughness, vitality, etc. and stats from skills, traits, food, consumables). And it’s really easy to ruin player builds with scaling (those that need precision, for example). Mobs, on the other hand, have no traits and barely any skills. So it’s easier to balance the scaling of mobs.
  2. Most players are level 80. If mobs are default level 80, then no scaling is used most of the time. So even if your scaling algorithm is not perfect, most players are satisfied. Currently, most players are 80 so they’re downscaled: so if your scaling algorithm is bad, most players are affected negatively.

How does it work?

  • Mobs are default level 80.
  • Each player sees a mob as being the same level as that player. A level 40 will see that mob as level 40, while a level 60 will see that mob as level 60.
  • Damage a player does to a mob is converted to a percentage of that mob’s health. That’s how much health each player sees the mob losing. For example: a level 40 sees a mob as having 1000 health. A level 60 sees that same mob as having 2000 health. The level 40 does 100 damage to the mob. 100 is 10% of 1000. So to every single player, that mob appears to lose 10% of its health. The level 40 sees the mob has 900 health now and the level 60 sees it as having 1800 health.
  • UI health bars show health as percentages anyway, so nothing UI-wise has to be modified.
  • This can be tweaked as desired. For example if Anet doesn’t want a level 2 person in Orr, they can set a limit on downscaling. So mobs in Orr might only be allowed to downscale to at most level 60 and never below, for example.

Too much pessimism. At least wait for HoT challenging content announcing :P

Though i understand why you’re all so pessimistic, i can’t resolve myself to be so.

I’m pretty sure “challenging content” now means the challenge is in organizing large groups of people (think VW or Tequatl) rather than challenging individual player skill.

This is much more casual friendly as they can still autoattack in any gear they wish while still feeling like it was “hard.”

The highest level of individual challenge would involve moving out of orange circles, and in moving into white areas.

TLDR: herding cats is what passes for challenging content in GW2 henceforth.

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Pull her to the edge of the top of the stairs and fight her (and her champ) until she kneels down for her teleport.
  2. Quickly get to the bottom of the stairs before she actually teleports. Move back far enough that her champ deaggros. After she teleports, she will keep aggro on you instead of reseting. At this point, she is at the edge of the top of the stairs.
  3. Stay downstairs until she teleports again, this time she ends up downstairs.
  4. Kill her. Note that once downstairs, never pass through her or move behind her or otherwise leave her field of view as she will instantly reset — unless you have a minion out who is in her field of view… she will aggro on the minion, but if she kills that minion too fast (for example a clone), she will reset.

Anet will never admit it because it’ll cause a ton of outrage.

I read a most amusing extension of this idea the other week, with one player adamantly claiming that siege took up player space. It made me chuckle.

The class pets I recall Devs saying they take marginal space. The minis? Not so sure, they do help with lag tho if dismissed.

I remember a while back a golem party with 50 golems and not enough people to man them because they got capped. People suspected golems contributed in some way to the cap.

This was in a lower tier server, in an enemy BL so it was unlikely there were tons of people running around contributing to the map cap.

It’s not so outrageous to believe that siege contribute to the cap as they do take up server resources. Who knows though. Well, Anet of course, but they don’t communicate.

Race change on gem store/black lion chest?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lord Kuru.3685

Race change could be done and there have been a million suggestions on how it could be implemented.

I don’t remember even one suggestion that offered a sensible mechanical solution. In fact, most “solutions” concentrated only on how it were to look from the player side.

This.

No player could have offered a mechanical/programming solution because no player knows the inner working of the programming.

Let’s elaborate a bit on that by looking at what is probably the most common player solution, ie. reset personal story on race change. Firstly, this kind of solution faces the same problems as allowing players to replay personal story (because that is what this solution entails) and secondly, there are bunch of minor things the choices in personal story affects, including the state of your home instance (yes that thing you only visit to mine some daily nodes, if even that) as well as numerous open world interactions related to the choice of order to join in particular.

These things seems so minor that they are easy to gloss over from players point of view because they are barely seen by most players. The problem with all of this boils down to the fact that they would have to reset your character state, but also hold partial records of every one of the previous states to an extent (ie. avoid re-earning rewards for example).

One thing to consider, when the story journal was introduced, they wouldn’t or couldn’t (because of it being either technically impossible, or cost prohibitive) allow parts of personal story to be replayed, if they couldn’t do it for the story journal all the same reasons would apply to race change.

Profession changes on the other hand, while probably easier would have a set of their own problems (namely to do with gear, and that one ultimately insignificant choice in character creation).

This doesn’t even touch on any potential design reasons against them, see Jon Peters post about why Hero Points can not be reset on demmand… of the top of my head I can’t come up with parallel for race change but that is because I too do not know how the inner systems interact with each other or have enough information on the desing behind personal story now and at launch as well as how the system accommodates for that design.

Reset personal story to zero when race is changed.

So just making a new toon then.

Not even close. All those crafting recipes that possibly can’t even be gotten anymore, you get to keep.

Anet’s level of bugginess is extraordinary. This is exacerbated by:

  1. Not even being close to ready (testingwise) despite the slogan “when it’s ready.”
  2. Severe lack of communication. Is it a bug: who knows? When will it be fixed: who knows? Will it be fixed: who knows? e.g. Lupi autoattack issue: three months and no acknowledgement it’s even a bug yet, despite several promises of “checking into it, will get back to you.”
  3. So many serious bugs that are never fixed, exacerbated by #2.
  4. Extremely slow bug fixing, exacerbated by #2.
  5. So many obvious bugs, exacerbated by #2.

An public/semi-public beta test server would theoretically help a lot, but it seems they don’t even have time to test at all and it needs to be released right now.

They still need to know how many people they can stuff into the map so that the amount of lag stays within acceptable bounds.

It’s just that their idea of “within acceptable bounds” is extremely broad (to put it lightly).

Well, you’re crying because someone criticized Anet. So you fire up a post without even reading the OP.

As for the OP, Anet won’t allow using lower tier traits because that would allow more build options. As we’ve seen, they are extremely poor at balancing, so in their view, the fewer build options the easier to balance.
