If they don’t allow swamp over and over again, then put on your business suits because there’s going to be a good market for selling fractals (or is there one already, I can’t remember the conclusion of the selling-fractals-thread).

Anet has a habit of making a change, then realizing they dont like it and spending 1-2 years and changing it for a new design which they also dont like and the cycle continues.

This is the reason they have problems making new content. They spend most their dev time re designing the systems for basic content.

Very much this.

A recent example is the currency window: from original (was it a list, I can’t remember) to the awful tiles to the current list.

Or….

banish the thought, but maybe they have no real plans for adding more islands!

I weep for all those fractal rings I sold.

Anyone with expertise in statistics can tell us whether — under the assumption all rings have equal drop rate — the variability of rings in this screenshot is within tolerance? (Not counting the zerker rings.)

If you’re on a server with a really big guild group (or blob that listens), you can maybe do some tests:

  • Minions: everyone brings their necros. Make sure map cap has not been reached. Then everyone pop out all their minions: see if you get capped.

.

Oddly we have done that on Piken. We had a necro minion-only blob run .. it was glorious. And we got a full map blob in.

Were you uncapped before popping the minions and immediately capped after?

  • Minis: same idea. (I don’t think minis count, but it’s not that crazy an idea: Remember when minis counted towards the ranger rune bonus? They might take up more server computational power than we think, forcing Anet to count them as a fraction of a player for the cap.)

Neither test would be totally conclusive, but they would give us information for further tests.

And if siege is part of the cap, siege trolls will run wild (not that they don’t already).

Well exactly. Which makes any claim that siege takes up player spots silly.

Not really…

A siege might take up the equivalent of 1/10 of a player, in which case 100 troll siege would reduce your player population: not visibly on a quick inspection perhaps, but it would affect your server. For example if the cap were 80 players (or the equivalent, including siege), you’d lose 12% of your population.

Might I refer you to this thread:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Really-interesting-reply-to-map-cap-question/first#post5335659

TLDR: Dev gave a politician-like answer, indicating that pop cap is not simply “every server gets X number of players.”

My guess: it’s “every server gets X amount of server time.” AI costs server time, and so if you have minions out, it costs you some percentage of a full player. Anet can’t afford to admit this because GTFO-toxicity will go through the roof. And if siege is part of the cap, siege trolls will run wild (not that they don’t already).

And this is the reason why anet never posts in the wvw section.. Bunch of people who just won’t let go of this game constantly hang around the forums and nitpick at everything they ever say.

LOL. Nitpicking just got us a lot closer to learning about something people have wanted to know for years. I’d say it’s a lot more productive than incessantly complaining about forum posts.

So they avoided the question yet you are so much closer to getting the answer you are looking for?

Wow. Someone please explain it to this guy.

You explain it.. You said he avoided the question but then said you are also closer to getting your answer. So which is it really? Did he avoid the question and leave you still wondering or did he answer it?

I quoted you for a reason because I want you to reply.

I’ll help you out since you seem to be stumped.. The answer was phrased the way it was because it was asked about “players” not mini’s, not siege, and not minions

Oh wow. I thought you were being snarky, but it turns out you really don’t understand it.

You don’t give a roundabout answer of “every server follows the same rules” to a simple question: “are the map caps equal,” if the answer were simply “yes.”

So the answer is not “yes” because there are other factors that affect the cap. One possibility is that minions count towards the cap: maybe not as a full player but perhaps a percentage of a player. Maybe siege counts towards the cap. Maybe minis count toward the cap. I’ve seen all three speculated in these forums several times.

It’s not even farfetched, particularly the minions theory:

Minions have AI, they interact with players. They hit and get hit. So they cost server time… which there’s a finite amount of. Combine this with the aforementioned “rule,” which is very possibly: “each server gets the same amount of server time,” and you’ve got a setup where two servers are both capped but one server has more players.

So why won’t Anet come out and just say this? It’s because if they did, WvW would instantly become toxic when one server feels it is capped but has fewer players than an opponent. Minion master necros, spirit weapon guards… whoever has minions will be told to GTFO to make room in the queue.

Imagine if siege influenced the cap, you’d have siege trolls going even more crazy than they do now.

This was the question:

Many of us have been wondering for a very long time, are the map caps for each server actually equal for each map, dont have to give the actual number, but are they actually equal because sometimes….

This was the relevant part of the reply by dev Stephen ClarkeWillson (the rest of the reply is about transfers):

The number of players allowed in per team all follow the same rules on all instances of each WvW map.

Here’s the interesting thing:

Notice that he avoids saying that the number of players alloted to each side are the same. So some other factors affect the player cap. Players have suspected this from the beginning. Now the question is what are these other factors?

  • minions?
  • siege?
  • minis?

I can imagine the toxicity in mapchat if any of these three are revealed to affect the map cap (which is probably why the answer was phrased as it was).

In other words, you’ve quit PvP?

Oh. Kind of like how dungeons rewards all differ based on their difficulty level?

I’m glad Anet worked so hard tweaking the dungeon rewards, giving them valuable experience when it comes to deciding on rewards for fractals.

I was always going to hold off on the expansion, but I don’t like to burn bridges.

Could be a while, could be never, it’s up to them.

This has me curious. Didn’t you, as forum specialist, get selected based on favoritism towards the game and it’s developers? The obvious answer based on this is, no. I see that as a sign of honesty on ArenaNets side, but they really should just listen to the wishes of their customers more, that way people are happy with the game and buy expansions because they want to.

That’s just it. The wishes of the customer counter one another. In very many aspects, for every thread demanding one thing, there is a thread demanding the opposite. Then you have posters “claiming” they do not listen to the wishes of the customer, simply because they don’t following through on thay specific customers demands.

This is our biggest problem. We, like any large group of people, have widely disparate views of what would be best for the gamemode. For everyone that says we need to merge the low pop servers, we have one saying that ANet must forcibly destack the high pop servers. For every person screaming about PPK being the metric, we have one staunchly defending PPT.

ANet cannot, and should not, try to win with everyone. They cannot win with everyone, and if they did I would shudder to see the game that was created.

The fact that golem rush week exploit had no patch and not even an acknowledgement from the devs tells us it’s not players disparate preferences that’s the problem.

Unless you’re saying some people enjoyed the exploit so Anet shouldn’t have done anything. Are you?

You act like everyone was exploiting. I played everyday during event and ran into zero people exploiting.. Also event is over and yet you keep bringing it up in several threads..

Move on already.

I bring it up because of its relevance.

The event might be over, but the fact that Anet did not even acknowledge the problems (much less fix them) shows us they have zero regard for the WvW game mode.

And when it comes to whether to buy the expansion or not, given we’re in the WvW forum, I find this fact very relevant.

The problem isn’t solved?

Can you provide proof that the golem buff exploit still exist please?

Wow. That’s your response?

World Population Changes Are Coming

With the changes completely locking down T1 this will be a slow death sentence for OCX WvW and to a lesser extent SEA.

I currently belong to a smaller (10-15 people per night) oceanic guild in T1 we have been recruiting for months and the growth is extremely slow although steady, the catch is the majority of our recruits are either new players or returning players coming from lower tier servers because their exists little to no oceanic population T1.
The reason that most (90%) of oceanic guilds gather on T1 is that there simply isn’t enough of a oceanic population left in WvW to be spread out among many servers while also providing an engaging WvW experience.

Without new people coming in or moving up retention will slowly kill off our guild and I have no doubt the same effect is happening to other OCX guilds too as they too have been shrinking over the past few months as the only way to recruit now is hope that older players on your own server return.

As of this new system I could not recommend to any of my friends who stopped playing to come back as I couldn’t even WvW against them let alone along side them, the same situation exists within SEA but the player base in a decent portion larger so the retention will be slower.

With all your experience in T1, you surely know how to lock in a tier so that no one moves in or out of it.

So organize a mass OCX move out of T1 into one of the non-full tiers and lock it in.

T8 is probably best since servers can only leave T8 in one way: up to T7, making your job easier. In any case, OCX accounts for a lot of PPT so keeping T8 the “OCX tier” won’t be as hard as when people tried to make T8 the “small man tier.”

Despite the lack of transparency and the one recently failed event, I don’t think Anet has just given up on WvW. They simply can’t. While its apparent that WvW numbers are low, they are still numbers that I’m sure Anet is looking into. With HoT on the horizon, nothing else is getting attention at this point really and its been that way for about a year now. That doesn’t mean they don’t care though.

One failed event? Seriously? You don’t remember the commander tag color debacle? What about “ruining my game mode?” Or the fail of borderlands ruins that led directly to the EotM fail, that leads to the (almost certainly fail) HoT BL? And we’ve always had the total lack regard for WvW when it comes to balance. Don’t forget the inaction when it comes to hackers/exploiters/trolls — most spectacularly seen during golem week. What about the population/coverage problem that has never been addressed? Remember the permanent no-white swords announcement? Here’s a small one, but one that points to the amount of effort Anet puts into WvW: the failed QL bridge fix.

Oh yeah, remember “no one plays only WvW?”

But of course, you’re “sure Anet’s looking into it” right?

The commander tag wasn’t an event and was literally corrected in 2 days. EoTM was meant to do well but you can’t always predict the exact outcome of something so large. When it comes to balance in WvW I think its mostly because Anet doesn’t have the numbers or skillful players (no offense Anet, but compared to the WvW guilds, we know they are more skillful because they have more time than you to play) to test out multiple 20v20/30v30/etc fights the way it happens on live servers. The little changes like PPK scoring and white sword changes are testing the waters. They aren’t intended to be the greatest thing to come to WvW. Its their way of seeing what works and what doesn’t. What people like and what they don’t. As far as the population issue, I would like for you to look at the front page of this forum and read that a change is coming tomorrow for that.

I know you’re upset. I am too. I want WvW to grow and be much better than it is now or has been in the past.

  • Commander tag was only changed after MASSIVE outrage in the forums, both WvW and PvE.
  • They have explicitly stated that “WvW is supposed to be unbalanced.”
  • White swords were originally announced to be a permanent change. It was only changed to a “test” after MASSIVE outrage in the forums.

WvW doesn’t generate revenue for anet – thus it is shafted, a la sPvP.

Actually it should generate quite nice revenue. Since you don’t make nearly as much money in WvW as in PvE many gemshop transactions will have to be done with real money instead of gold. Not to mention the server transfers.

Not only this, but sPvP is hardly shafted by Anet. They LOVE sPvP and spend an inordinate amount of dev resources on it considering how much of a failure it has been.

I highly doubt anet gets a high volume of server transfers…It doesn’t make a blip on their revenue radar compared to how many PvE casuals get in line to buy the latest skins, hair dyes, styles, kits, etc to continue playing barbie doll wars 2.

if they LOVED sPvP there would be :

1.WAY more game modes. 3 years of NOTHING new except some junk map (skyhammer) and finally ONE.. ONE!!! DM map lol. That doesn’t scream LOVE to me.

2. Balance patches. They come out every 6-8 months lol. the meta moves terribly slow. Some classes remain OP for so long and some classes remain useless for so long.

Now I do agree sPvP gets more attention than WvW, no doubt about that. but what they truly love is PvE. everything else is secondary. The reason pvp gets more attention from devs than wvw is simple – they believe gw2 spvp has a chance at being e-sports (we all know thats not happening). They will keep trying thou!

Transfer costs might not make a ton of cash for Anet, but from what I’ve seen, WvW players love their skins, hair styles, dyes, etc. just as much as PvE players — and WvW players have less gold.

As for PvP:

They stayed with only one game mode because they have a vision for their game and absolutely refuse to change that vision. “You’re going to play conquest and you’re going to like it,” is their attitude. They do this for other parts of the game as well.

For example, their attitude on WvW is basically: “WvW is for casual PvP, it’s supposed to be unbalanced, and it’s merely a launching point for players to move from PvE to PvP.” Never mind the fact that WvW is much preferred by the playerbase over PvP (and fits the theme of a “casual” MMO much better).

PvP is in the terrible shape it is not because Anet doesn’t love it, but rather because they insist on the awful conquest gamemode and because they simply have an awful balance team. Basically, they love it, but their incompetence makes it look unloved.

[QUESTION] Do I need HoTs

Personally I wouldn’t give a company that clearly doesn’t care about ALL it’s players any more money. Which is pretty much my plan.

This. Considering the amount of support and communication (both zero) Anet has provided during this exploit week, I wouldn’t give them my money.

Will wvw recover after the clown week?

Dailies exist to reinforce the habit of logging into the game every day, so players don’t drift away from the game.

On the other hand, when Anet gives incentives to not log in (Golem/exploit week), it pushes players to break their gameplay habit. That’s how you lose players.

And that’s not even considering the phenomenally poor support (as in none) that WvW has received during this week.

Where's the 22. july patch?

“I understand that this would be helpful but in the absence of a test server, which is our current situation, we will do as much as we can as fast as we can. We made some changes today and more will be coming as the week goes on. After that our intention is to make balance and bug fix changes to this stuff every couple of weeks leading up to the release of HoT.”

The key word people are missing is “intention” 1.a thing intended; an aim or plan:
It’s not a guarantee of releasing patches every two weeks

The key words are “every couple of weeks” — in colloquial English, this doesn’t mean “every two weeks” — regardless of whether they intend to stick to it or not, they never promised an update every Tuesday.

edit: grammar fix

LOL. A “couple” means 2.

So what did you do during golem week???

but at the same time, I would rather fall rear-first into a factory of thumbtacks than grind silverwastes for full sinister. :S

I did it (exotic armor, ascended everything else). It was not fun. And yeah.. they’re going to nerf burning for sure.. who knows when that’s going to happen though.

I see Josh at the end discuss how he basically implemented this whole event on his own time as part of the marketing team just to try and add something new into WvW, and this is the reaction he gets.

I’m just really disappointed in the playerbase.

If these are the kind of ideas he has, it’s better if he does nothing.

The entire WvW community told him well beforehand that this event would not be fun. And guess what, after the first hour of the event — well before the golem hack became widespread — the forum got a flood of people asking for the event to end immediately.

Not only that.. remember the botched implementation where this event polluted the previous matchup by starting before reset?

Josh should probably have spent his time doing some event for PvP instead (golem week PvP, maybe.. lol) because it’s clear he is not tuned to the same wavelength as the WvW community.

Just let WvW die it’s inevitable slow death.

They simply refuse to acknowledge that their PvP has totally failed and that WvW is their customers’ preferred player vs player mode.

WvW supports a multitude of playstyles, giving almost every type of player what they want out of player vs player. It’s perfect for the kind of PvE that GW2 has.

What a waste.

The state of WvW (as I see it)

I kinda feel like WvWvW players at this point are like a married man’s mistress who still believes he’ll leave his wife even though they just bought a new house. Make some other arrangements folks. :P

That burned a bit but was probably the most spot-on.

And people, go look who is the major share holder of the company. Its not the same rodeo that it once was.

Anet did make a great game, but not much you can do when a company like Nexon muscles their way in.

People always like to make excuses for Anet. “It’s owned by NCSoft.” Or, “Nexon made them do it.”

Fact of the matter is, it’s the Anet devs that are the problem. We know this from their own words and statements on WvW. Just look at the most recent one about no one being WvW-only players.
