Here is how vertical grind of Ascended gear, combined with horizontal progression don’t fit well together:
- With horizontal progression in the form of new skills: New builds will arise and some old builds will become unviable/non-optimal. If that means grinding for a new set of Ascended gear, people are not going to be happy.
- With horizontal progression in the form of skins: With exotic gear, if you want an alternate look, you (easily) get another set of gear and put your new skins on that new set. With Ascended, are you really going to grind out an alternet set of Ascended gear? Thus:
Every player who gets Ascended gear represents money lost for Anet because they are less apt to buy skins. Think about that, Anet.
Why do I need a second set of Ascended gear to skin it?
If you want to have two sets available to you (to fit your mood, for example).
Of course, you can always keep old, unused skins using transmutation crystals to move them to white gear as storage, but that is a HUGE pain, not to mention costly. I’d guess there are many people who simply won’t bother to put skins on their Ascended gear because of these issues:
Before Ascended gear came along, I personally had two stat-wise identical exotic daggers with different (expensive!) skins. Now that I have an Ascended dagger, I haven’t bothered with skinning it at all because I know it’ll be a hassle should I decide to reskin (without destroying the incumbent skin).
Yup the whole instance owner thing is a problem even if it is not abused.
Someone should start a “The only thing I want for 2014 is the instance owner fixed” thread like a petition and just have the thread grow into something that cannot be ignored.
I mean we all know that Anet is aware of the issue, but I’m curious as to what it would take to bump it up on their prioirty list.
Considering there’s always at least 2 threads on the front page about this issue, I’d say Anet doesn’t care.
I foresee a future course in game design focussed entirely on Anet’s mistakes. Botched community relations has got to be worth at least 3-4 lectures.

You guys are rude, it’s just a game you know, people play how they want, you can’t force them to play like how YOU want, i play what i want to play for fun, but you guys seems to be upset and elitists here so i’m not going to argue any longer with you because you’re stupid. It’s like those people wanting 5k AP Warriors when i saw 12k AP Warriors in my group yesterday that couldn’t run in arah p1 and ragequitted in the end because they were too bad skipping Drakes and Oozes, yet we failed because a mesmer aggro all of the champions instead of one small group.
They’re saying that you get hit so hard in higher levels that no amount of toughness or vitality will save you. Therefore, toughness and vitality stats are wasted and you may as well put your stats into zerkers.
To zerker experts — if you were a dev, how would you modify encounters so that zerker is not necessarily king?
Given what GW2 is, non-max damage builds are only useful against constant dps. Conditions are more useful against high defence/permanent protection monsters, but then you are building for max dps again, with more emphasis on hybrid/condition damage.
Basically, if you want to force players to use survivability gear, you need to make boss attacks unavoidable – non-projectile ranged attacks or constant melee attacks with boss shadowsteping/being too fast to kite ranging. Which is quite the definition of anti-fun if you ask me.
Zerker gear is (generally) not optimal in WvW so it’s certainly possible to have fun/interesting encounters where zerker is not favored. Unfortunately if Anet moves away from zerker = king, then we’ll have to grind for more types of gear — a terrible thought.

since mods and devs never come into this forum…. do you all mind if we make WvW matchup threads here?
You can’t get rewards from content that’s been removed from the game. So the short answer is: No.
Back in spring Anet introduced a very randomized matchmaking system, the number of different opponentswas very high. This system was introduced for a very good reason. The problem now is that the t1 servers are locked exactly like they were pre random matchmaking. So we are back to square one here in t1.
No we are not back to the original system. The original system locked the tiers, even for imbalanced matches due to a mathematical flaw in the design. This flaw is resolved.
But we are back to ANet original intention with match-making:
First priority is to generate balanced matches. And I think it does so very well at moment. And EU-T1 is not locked, the random system can always roll the servers out. And if a T1 server looses power or a T2 server gains power match-making will react fast to it. The spring situation where Deso and SFr lost their power and were still locked in T1 will not happen again.
The imbalanced in NA are even strong (more concentration on fewer servers, as there are no national-servers that counter the WTJ-movement.). Therefore NA-T1 is temporarily locked. And league matches proved that this is in fact adequate.
If you want more variance you need to fight for a match-score system that allows more servers to compete against each other, i.e. reduce the dominance of coverage-wars on match outcome. (cf. offtime-capping, e.g. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Night-protection-1/3281118 which has more variance built-in every server always play 3 different matches at any day)
This. T1 having their matches locked in the new system is the result of people stacking into T1. They deserve it.
The best way, honestly, would be to have two subforums – one modded, and one unmodded. Let each poster pick their flavor. (This has the bonus of providing a haven for all random threads, giving the mods less to deal with.) Voting on posts just devolves everything into a juvenile popularity contest.
But the suspicion is that Anet’s going to downsize the mod team and your solution doesn’t allow for that.
I hope they add even more dailies.
Seems to me that we clear them way fast than ANet expects because they are just bad players and use crappy builds in their own game that they supposedly know. Seriously who uses P/P and PVT gear? Who uses S/T on Mesmer in PVT gear? and why on earth would you when you can just burn through the mobs and survive by pure skill.
True. This is Chris Whiteside (head of production team):
“I play a PVT AOE Heal shout War. I have played this role fora long period of time and have never played a DPS War. On top of this I am also easily able to hold agro and support my group. My DPS is terrible but I keep my team alive while they run around destroying everything”
The dungeon forum right here. Mods, devs never enter.
It is true that you’ve “beat” these warriors when they run, but is it fun to win like this?
That’s how faceroll the PvE is in this game.
When Anet gave tons of badges away in the achievement chests, it basically removed the viability of badges as a currency forever. We’ll almost certainly never be able to salvage or forge WvW gear.
Rank servers as with the Leagues, except winner takes all. That strongly encourages double team of the strongest server.
They haven’t even fixed the font issue (small fonts) that makes the listings front page unreadable — there’s seriously no hope of any more complex changes.
The funny thing is that this forum is frequently more hostile than the WvW matchups forum (RIP).
I do not consider that was a ‘lucky’ drop …
A lucky drop would be something useful, this wasn’t one of those …A free piece of something that normal costs about 60 gold to craft? Even if you don’t want it, it’s still lucky.
Would you consider yourself lucky if today you got winning lottery numbers … for last week’s drawing?
IMO, matchup forum hasn’t really gotten any worse since it was created. And in comparison to other internet forums, it’s REALLY tame.
The only logical explanation for this is that they’re planning on reducing mod staff/hours in the new future.
So let me get this straight, NCsoft is like a film producer and Anet is like the director (as Carbine). Carbine is funded by NCsoft with money earned thanks to Anet, but Anet has nothing to do with this new game wildstar. Is that correct?
if it is, is comforting i was scared that after all the effort that i put in this game they just abandon the game.
You should still be scared. NCsoft can, at their whim, decide to stop funding GW2 and focus on whatever else they wish.
Though keep in mind you will want to discard any soul bound items before deleting the character as other characters can’t pull them out of the bank and you will not be able to delete them (the Items).
That’s hilarious!
I thought you could only order a max of 1 stack of something at a time? 100,000 chests means 400 orders. That’s a lot of clicking!
Creating a new character = money sink.
And we know Anet loves money sinks. Also, it’s probably more complicated than we think.
Let’s say you remove all the EXP from the personal story. Let’s say it brings you back to lvl 60 (not gonna do the math). What about the EXP you gained by doing dynamic events above lvl 60? What about the EXP you gained by killing mobs above lvl 60? What about the EXP you gained by doing achievements that can only be done by lvl 80’s? Exploration in lvl 60+ maps? Etc…
Why so complicated? Just leave the toon at level 80 and wipe the story to 0.
If Anet thinks XP/karma/skill pts can be gained unfairly in this way, then something like this:
race change costs:
- 4000 gems
- 1000000 XP
- 1000000 karma
- 200 Skill Points
(made up numbers, of course)
- If the “marriage” in wwww season 2 period is between one “strong” web server and one “weak” www server i think nobody will sufferring from big queues in primetime , because the strong server population will fill the empty and weak servers.maybe someone says : "why i should go to play to other server " , the answer is : because in wwww season 2 the result will calculated from both servers
Pairing of big and small servers is an interesting idea.. however, imagine the rage when the big server starts ordering the small server around:
- “Don’t queue into our matchup, stay in your own. We will come save you when we deem it necessary.”
- “Tag down your commanders when our commanders tag up.”
- etc.
The only time I ever spent in the ruins was when I was getting the achieves during season 1. I don’t intend to ever capture another ruin ever. Some people like them, my thoughts are if I want a pvp map I will go to pvp cause that’s basically what they are. A pvp map in the middle of the borderland.
This also bothers me a lot. The ruins feel like an attempt to push Anet’s failed sPvP onto WvW players. But in the end, the terrain and features are just too busy. I would actually have preferred if they simply drained the water from the quaggan lake.
Two things:
1. Remember the “you have been warned” mod post? This feels the same. Anet generally has a pretty bad attitude towards its customers.
2. Deletion of the forum fits with Anets MO. Remember how they fixed the Twilight Arbor F/U path?
So it’s been a while since the ruins has been introduced. What do you all think about it now?
Personally, I avoid it completely (as a roamer/in a small group) — way too many nooks and crannies for people to escape when they’re losing.
Furthermore, I rarely see small-man videos taking place in the ruins — if it was a place that was supposed to encourage small-man fights, it seems to have failed.
(I’m in T5, by the way)
There was probably some complaints to corporate and this was the solution.
I find this EXTREMELY unlikely. The forums are way over-moderated and are actually really tame by internet standards.
I feel sorry for those Anet mods that get fired right after Christmas.
That is the worse gift they will get in their life.
This is unfortunately the likely explanation.
Here’s my take on how vertical progression (Ascended gear) and horizontal progression (skins) conflict in the current environment, likely hurting Anet’s bottom line:
People are simply not going to grind a second piece of Ascended gear just to get have an alternate look — which means they’re often not going to buy a second skin. So every player who grinds out a piece of Ascended gear is potentially money lost for Anet.
The best part: this can be verified (or disproven) by (carefully) looking at your metrics.
(I, for example will probably never put a skin on my Ascended dagger while I have two exotic daggers with identical stats rotting in my inventory: one with a destroyer skin, the other with a sclerite skin.)
Also out of curiosity what makes you think they’ll even pay attention to someone desteoying an item in game? There’s no protest value to any protest if no one sees it and I’m sure they don’t have some fat pimpled up nerd sitting staring at a screen 24 /7 waiting to see if some one throws a fit like a petulant child at christmas who didn’t get the proper colored iphone 5c and destroys it. They don’t care that much haha
There is NO WAY they’re not keeping stats like this because it tells them A LOT about how players play their game, about what items players value and what items they don’t.
In the end, stats like this tell them how to keep players in the game and how to make money in the gemstore. They would be complete fools to not keep this data and review it on a regular basis. Moreover, Anet absolutely loves metrics (whether they interpret them correctly is another question).
And no one is acting like a petulant child here. I’m calmly saying that I don’t value this particular drop and am destroying it so that it shows up in the stats. I do the same for Black Lion Chests and Aetherized key pieces.
Anet almost has to make some change because people are simply not going to grind a second piece of Ascended gear just to get have an alternate look — which means they’re often not going to buy a second skin. So every player who grinds out a piece of Ascended gear is potentially money lost for Anet.
(I, for example will probably never put a skin on my Ascended dagger while I have two exotic daggers with identical stats rotting in my inventory: one with a destroyer skin, the other with a sclerite skin.)
Fire-and-forget conditions is a possible solution: make condition duration and damage-per-tick be determined at the instant of application. That way you save TONS of data transfers and computations by not having to compute new durations and damage-per-ticks every single second.
It would not require a complete overhaul of the way conditions work… and I think could possibly remove the 25 stack limit (to be replaced perhaps by a limit of how many new conditions can be applied per second)
I’m sure at some point you’ll be able to make more use for it than some of the other junk that clogs everyone’s inventories
They have done nothing to make undesired Ascended rings desirable for over a year. What makes you think they’ll change their minds now?
IMO the protest value of destroying the gear is worth more than some future possibility that it may be of some value.
Disclaimer: I destroyed thousands of Bloodstone dust before they nerfed its droprate. So destroy at your own risk (Then again, perhaps my destroying the dust helped push Anet towards action on the dust issue.)
You also know that ArenaNet are responsible for what is written on these forums, and need to make sure that stuff that could be breaking actual laws are removed, right?
You’re hilarious. That’s not even close to being the reason Anet is shutting down the forum.
Lets revive Guildwars2guru!!!!!
The people at GW2guru would be fools to not immediately create a matchups subforum of their own.
delete it and make it a youtube video
That’s even better!
For those who say to save it.. you’re playing into Anet’s hands — they’d just love it if you need more bank space (consider ascended fractal rings).
On a serious note: I personally think ANet will focus on WvW more next year, I think this year was Pve year, next one will be WvW one
Boy are you going to be disappointed.
Instant new game mode: Red Resign
The wiki makes it sound like Anet got rid of hero battles in order to stop red resigning.. is that so? (if yes: that’s hilarious and sad at the same time!)
Those who stacked into T1 deserve to be matched up with each other for the rest of eternity (this applies to NA.. not sure whether stacking is as bad in EU).
[EVIL] Because Good Is Dumb. (spaceballs reference)
Have you seen their asuran engie.. he looks just like Dark Helmet with his SE helm — LOL
You should at least be able to salvage for T7 mats.
But as it is, just destroy it. Give Anet a message that this drop is so worthless and makes you so angry that you prefer to destroy it. (Anet seems only to listen to their metrics.)
… great job! Nice and simple, no clutter, easy to read and easy on the eyes. IMO the best looking forum I’ve used on the web.
I absolutely love the Search box. Working since day one and expect it to work many more years ahead…
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . /sarcasm
Yeah… search is just awful … I swear that it’s actually gotten worse over time to the point where it’s now completely unusable.
But I’m referring only to the look and feel of the forum — not functionally like search or (over) moderation.
Has there ever been any indication from the devs as to how much time they thought dungeon runs ought to take?
Has there ever been a stream or video showing devs playing a whole dungeon from start to finish?
1. Stats tied to gear, stats tied to trait lines.
2. Ascended gear
3. Condition system that forces 25 stack limits
4. The ability to rez fully dead players in WvW greatly handicapping smaller forces.
5. Ranking system of WvW that discourages the two weaker servers from double teaming the strongest one.
Adding more and more skills will inevitably lead to balance disaster — unless all old skills are obsoleted by power creep. But no one wants power creep.
So copy Magic: the Gathering’s Type II/Standard play: have a regular schedule where old skills expire and new skills are introduced to replace them. The number of skills available to each player is always constant, and thus easier to balance.
So where do we post videos once the matchup forum is cancelled? Or are we not supposed to do that anymore?
