[Spoilers] ArenaNet "confirms" the fan theories about Elder Dragons?

tjafaas, you need to update your gw lore, the seed is confirmed to show up everytime the dragons rise

Please, do tell me your source.

Anyway, I totally agree with Gwaiyn. Putting the Sylvari as “minions”, either good or bad, is quite outlandish imo.

heres a video about it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWtFf7UbtAQ&feature=relmfu

Did you miss the part where Wooden Potatoes said it was speculation. Also Im yet to see confirmation in any format from Arenanet that states that the Pale Tree appears every time the dragons rise. Thats as far as I know just a theory.

Logan and his infamous decision

He pretty much made humanity step back 10 feet.

Even tough we all know he loves the Queen and vice-versa, they were about to destroy an Elder Dragon!

The proof that humanity (including all races) needed to finally come together and end the Dragon threat forever.

He failed his team objective and worst, many lost their lifes for nothing (Glint, Snaff).

The Queen saved herself and never needed him at all.

Id argue this point. If Jennah would have been able to save herself without him then why did she take so long to do it? Its more likely the spell that she cast took time to do or that she was stunned from touching Kralkatorik’s mind. Either way, Logan bought her the time she needed to recover and cast that spell that saved them.

The question of weither Jennah was worth it or not is a different question. To Logan it appears she was.

Also Im not convinced that Destiny’s Edge killing Kralkatorik would have had much positive effect politically. The charr and humans would still have been at war and probably the treaty would have been less likely if Jennah was dead. Furthermore it could have even lead the races to underestimate the challange the Elder Dragons posed. Kralkatorik’s death would have been far from anyone notable seeing it.

Looking for "Ghosts of Ascalon" characters.

Dougal is in LA at where the armour vendors for the dungeons are. Ember is at the Treaty summit in the Fields of Ruin. Killeen’s grave is there as well (its a skill point location).

Didnt know it was Gullik who visited the grave. Waited for ages but no one turned up. Doesnt suprise me though.

The mursaat could have given up on humans. Seriously, I don’t imagine them being inactive for 250 years, and humans aren’t the center of the world. They could have enslaved any other unknown race.

Considering there probably arent many of them left it could be that the last ones are after revenge against the humans. And do remember that the humans were the center of the world for a long time and still have major territorial holdings outside of Tyria.

I dont think the mursaat have the resources or numbers at this point to really start from scratch particularly with the EDs on the move.

How the Humans became Gods

in Lore

Lutinz.6915

If humanity was brought over by the six gods from another world via the Mists, then the hints we were given in GW1 were false – that humanity originated in the lands beyond the continent of Cantha (which at that time, is a continent divided into three – the Dragon Empire, the Kurzicks, and the Luxons).

That there were lands east of the Luxons; south of the Kurzicks; and south-east of the continent. With the overlay maps based on the data file that was found and posted, it shows us that what we know as the continent of Cantha is but a part of a bigger island. Which perfectly fits what was given to us in-game back in GW1.

Not neccesarily. It just means that the place that humans first entered Tyria was south of Cantha. Do remember we have quite a few quite varied cultures appear from the same location only a thousand or so years apart.

We know that the Pale Tree isnt unique cause we have at least one case of a Sylvari not born of the Pale Tree but from another somewhere. We also know the Sylvari definately come from the Pale Tree cause we see the pods they are born from.

Short answer is that the Pale Tree isnt a dragon. It may be linked to a dragon but its not one itself. Perhaps the most telling fact is unlike every other ED we know there is nothing dragonlike about its shape, from or nature. When all is said and done all the other EDs are superpowered giant lizards, literally.

At most the Pale Tree may have been intended as a Dragon Champion.

Note that the Inquest could be looking into the power behind the EDs rather than the EDs themselves. This may or may not mean there is a sixth elder Dragon but at this stage I dont think we have any solid evidence.

Am I the only one who has found dungeons exciting and fun? True I havent done the explorable modes but they are supposed to be the break neck hard modes of the game. They are for well co ordinated and focused groups looking for a serious challange. Storymode though Ive found mostly fine. Sure we have had wipes but its hardly been zerging or chain running from the last waypoint.

Or a twin axe warriors really OP?

What in particular are people finding hard and what is it that is killing people so much? That seems to be the issue. Is it an error in how we have been learning the game or is there a particular issue that makes the instance unbalanced.

You guys should really give some detailed feed back such as which mobs and which mechanics those mobs have which are making it too difficult.

Im not a big fan of a cross the board nerf since I dont really like the idea of dungeons in GW2 turning into the same mindless rushes we see in other MMOs.

Healing Signet active not worth using

in Warrior

Posted by: Lutinz.6915

Lutinz.6915

Ive used it if Im desperate. Its very much an emergancy button. You get a surge of healing but then lose the passive for a long time. Ive used it mainly in situations when Ive been trying to get out of melee and Im close to death or if Im in a spot were it will be unlikely that I can be rezed. I also used it once to buy me time to throw down a battle standard to rez 3 of my allies.

It has uses I think but its not something you use casually. The passive heals are just too good otherwise.

Warriors using daggers

Why would daggers break the mold? Warriors already have quite a large selection of weapons.

Is it actually possible to melee in dungeons?

in Warrior

Posted by: Lutinz.6915

Lutinz.6915

I use twin axes and a longbow and although Ive only done story modes Ive found that melee is very doable though it requires alot of movement and good timing. You also have to be prepared to back out if things get bad and switch to range for a bit.

Things Ive found really helpful are the skills: shake it off, and the Healing Signet. Healing Signet is incredable. It regenerates my health very quickly. I even went AFK once in the open world and came back to find a minotaur beating on my character. The Healing Signet was healing me faster than the minotaur did damage.

Prayer of Dwayna though is pretty patheticly weak compared to a skill like Healing Seed. I mean its a single heal on a 30 second CD that is weaker than most of the other heals including the 1 point heals. Why make it a 3 point heal if its going to be so weak.

There is the distinct possibility that there are very few if any Mursaat left. Furthermore It seems likely that they would most likely work through proxies if they can and the White Mantle are a pre setup proxy.

As for the Dragons, I imagine that if they can they will do what they did the last time the dragons awoke (the answer to that is in an Explorable mode of Arah.)

White Mantle appear within one of the human storylines

I think everyone can agree White Mantle are still around, but what I was stating and this thread is the Mursaat…..it’s a race. They are different things.

Well the White Mantle are pretty closely tied to the Mursaat since the White Mantle worshipped them. I would expect that if any are still around there is a good chance they are pulling the White Mantle’s strings. They could easily be hiding. They werent know as the Unseen for no reason.

If the Mursaat wanted Queen Jannah down they would have done it in their own way already. but it wouldn’t be lore related

I wouldnt leap to that conclusion. If there are any Mursaat left they likely would want power taken subtly rather than risk another revolt. Furthermore, the queen is protected by the Shining Blade who have a long history fighting both the Mursaat and White Mantle.

Mhenlo and Cynn apparently married by Winds of Change in GW1 and last we saw of them they were in Cantha or atleast Mhenlo was. I havent finished Winds of Change so I cant be sure. All 5 of them have books about them on the book stands in Divinity’s Reach. Mhenlo actually has two.

As for their final fates I still havent seen anything. I think we actually know a bit more about the fates and decendents of the other henchmen and hero’s than those 5.

Logan and his infamous decision

Lutinz.6915

I think it basically boils down to what a totally stupid move Jennah made in the first place. Rather than retreating to the Asura gates, she goes to the keep. WHY? Why not put yourself hundreds of miles away instead of behind a few stones? If she’d just left, Logan could have stayed, and we’d be sans one Elder Dragon.

Thanks a lot, your Royal Butterfingers.

Thats a good point….. Though to Jennah’s credit she does say in her written dialog in the personal story that she was foolish and selfish putting so many burden’s on Logan’s shoulders so there was no way for him to be able to manage them all. Of course he did accept all those burdens too. Thats why Jennah keeps trying to push Logan off into the world. To quote her, she needs him to be her partner, not her servant.

I found the Risen were respawning so quickly it was hard to get clear before I was caught up in melee again. It was worse when my companions went down because I had no way to get in there and get them back up without getting swamped. A short break betweenthe spawning of waves of Risen would have helped immensely.

It was kind of frustrating getting bogged down so much and running away usually ended with both of my allies getting beaten down or running back into combat the moment I stopped to look around.

There are transmutation stones that allow you to apply the appearance of one item to the stats of another. Im not sure how to get end game ones yet though I have heard you can make them in the mystic forge somehow.

However I dont think there will be any way to change orders since it plays a pretty major role in the personal story.

The dialogue... oh lord, the dialogue...

in Personal Story

Posted by: Lutinz.6915

Lutinz.6915

I liked a lot of the voice acting though some came of kind of wooden (Ill try to come up with examples in the future).

One thing I would say though is that I feel that sometimes the game is too subtle with information of NPCs.

For example Lord Faren:

When I first played him he struck me as just some flop if perhaps a brave one. I kind of fit since he was a noble and a playboy. There was writen dialog you can get if you talk to Countess Anise at the party chapter that suggests he was in the ministry at some point and was kicked out though she wont tell you why.

This changed my opinion of Faren. It made me feel he might have a history. His flopishness started to feel more like a front he hides behind, that he actually is a very closed man. I might have been completely wrong of course but it did both humanise him and more importantly give him depth.

Something as small as that made him suddenly a much more interesting character but you could easily miss a detail like that. A small event that showed a crack in his fasade even if it wasnt expanded on immediately would have added an extra layer to that character and given a hook to allow him to play a role in content later on.

Similarly there is some dialog with Riot Alice which explains her political view and shows a smart young woman struggling to except the reasoning for the death of her father (particularly since she could be right) rather than just some crazy anarchist.

Quinn could also have used this. A little story dialog between Logan and the PC with Logan asking the PC why he values Quinn so much could have allowed for a short but detailed hook into how Quinn was so close.

A story that showed Quinn’s good qualities.

For the first two those details about their lives were too hidden and should have been easier to find out. As for Quinn, who you need to make a major choice over, he really desperately needed that fleshing out earlier.

Compared to them many of the characters that come later like Forgal were much better though you spend alot more time with some of these.

The personal story step ‘Light in the Darkness’ was brilliant and I loved the VO of the visions of Destiny’s Edge. It gave us a great chance to see what was going on inside each of the members of Destiny’s Edge. I had to go off and do TA story directly afterwards cause I just could leave poor Caithe alone!

I also would have really liked to see some of these earlier characters turn up again later on at some point if only in a small passing role.

Humans: A dying race?

Humans are a race that is currently pretty heavily on the ropes. Also Orr lore is pretty heavily human focused so perhaps it helps balance out the lore to have the other races play major roles in the Zhaitan story.

Technically the humanity also still has Cantha and Elona as major population areas.

The Dragonbrand helped as well. Having Kralkatorik wake up and leave a distructive scare right through your nation and destroying or corrupting everything in his path kind of worked as a very convincing wake up call.

If you talk to some of the NPCs at the Summit on the plains of Ruin the common theme was that after seeing the Brand and the distruction the Elder Dragons caused, the war between the Humans and Ebonhawke seemed trivial.

Thats not to say there still arent groups that want the war to keep going and cant give up old hatreds. But as these groups get more desperate and use more extreme methods they are ironicly helping the Ebon Vangaurd and the Charr come together if just to fight insurgants.

Awesome! But still, ruining the food supply for one of the major cities does seem (to me) like a pretty achieving task even for a dragon. Thank you for the lovely responses:)

My guess is that we really arnt that important to them. I dont think they have seriously considered any of the races really major threats till recently. Their champions usually take the role of expansion and removal of threats. We are like weeds in the back of the yard that they will get one of their kids to burn out at some point once they have finished with their other chores. I dont think any of the Elder Dragons seriously expected us to kill one of them.

Waypoints: How do they work in lore?

in Lore

Posted by: Lutinz.6915

Lutinz.6915

They’re problematic for other reasons, as well. The existence of waypoints as “go from anywhere to any waypoint” is a bit rough on a lot of dramatic tension. For instance, I played a story instance that involved a fort being overrun and the defenders having to fall back. Once we were out of danger, we… had to run to our escape method. Nobody just used their waypoints to get away from the enemy, we had to all go by a traditional method of travel. It was rather jarring, if you think waypoints are common in-game. And given that you can use them from your first moments as a character, it seems unlikely that guards and soldiers are barred access to them because they’re not special enough.

Its quite likely that Waypoints lock down from locations as a security measure. After all the Asurian underground empire was overrun because the Destroyers used the Asurian gates to strike into the center of the Asurian cities. Something like a Waypoint system would have strict security as a neccessity.

There may also be power limits to how many people a mobile gate can transport in one go.

Not sure is Logan and Jennah love is real but I probably would have done the same thing.

Also, technically he did make an unbreakable oath to come to Jennah’s aid if she calls unlike Destiny’s Edge where he’s just there for the ride. of dragon slaughtering.

Jennah may have survived Ebonhawke regardless of Logan but I doubt the Charr and Human alliance would happen as Logan were the one who presented the Charr prisoners with Rytlock medallion thing. (vague on this part so correct me if im wrong)

The Logan/Jennah love thing was pretty poorly handled in the book but it was real. That was confirmed by Ree Soesbee.

Cantha: What do you think is happening there?

If the Emperor of Cantha is an enemy have a feeling we may see the major crime gangs, the Ah Fah and the Jade Brotherhood play a role as freedom fighter organisations. That would be an odd turn around from Factions.

I think we would discover a link between the Wardens and the Sylvari.

I wouldnt be suprised to discover the Celestials or the Envoys playing a role in the plot. That could tie into to the strange stuff leaking through from the Underworld in Queensdale.

Lutinz.6915

well yeah, but the Gods brought the Humans to Tyria

that’s old news, we have in game sources that they were not brought to this world by the gods, they originated from south of cantha, and rose to power from being savages.

We have one Jotun who is the last of his kind’s storytellers and who is very likely, like most ingame records, baised vs. multiple direct quotes from the story writers. Id say the humans arent native. Plus there isnt really much land south of Cantha for them to come from. Plus we have a quote from an Ogre, one of the oldest races in Tyria, that refers to times when ‘Magic came into the world’ and ‘Before there were humans’.

How the Humans became Gods

in Lore

We know that the gods are killable and that others can take their place. Only their power seems to be immortal. However I see the Gods kind of like Greek Gods. They are increadibly powerful but still failable. We know that among the current 6, at least 2 are children of other Gods. Balthazar took his godhood from his father by the sound of it, and Grenth took Dhumm’s power. Currently Kormir is the only one of the 6 we know was truely mortal and she was blessed by the other 5 to allow her to ascend.

What Ive read of the Human Gods it sounds like they came to Tyria and brought the Humans here, possibly fleeing their orginal world.

The Dragon Empire and the Elder Dragons

in Lore

Posted by: Lutinz.6915

Lutinz.6915

There is alot of speculation tied to this. Note that in the original Guild Wars it was the home to one of the major dragons in game, Kunavaang (I think I spelt that right). Considering Glint (the major dragon in prophecies) turned out to be a champion of Kralkatorik alot of people expect Kunavaang to hold a similar history.

It can be hard to say though. Kunavaang was a Sea Spray dragon, known for their connection to luck. Also Kunavaang’s powers seem strongly tied to celestial forces rather than water based ones. Celestial stuff was a big thing in Factions. We cant even be sure Kunavaang was a dragon in the same sense as Glint.

Im hoping we do go back to Cantha somewhat soon. It was probably my favorate place in GW1. Its worth noting however that Jeff Grubb said that we wont always be fighting Dragons in content. Powala Joko is likely to play the role of a major enemy at some point. A good part of the Canthan expac to involve combating a tyrant emperor.

Bubbles is keeping its head low for now. Apart from a few hints the races of Tyria currently dont even know there is a deep sea dragon.

Waypoints: How do they work in lore?

Why do Sylvari need underwater breathing apparatus?

in Lore

Posted by: Lutinz.6915

Lutinz.6915

Sylvari mimic the functionality of other humanoids. Although their organs dont work exactly the same, they need to eat as other humaniods do, sleep like other humaniods do and do the other business other humaniods do <.<

Sylvari are like an attempt to replicate a human with plant parts. Its likely their ‘skin’ works much like ours does too and as such protects them from things such as salt water.

My guess is that even though they dont breath oxygen they still need to breath Carbon diaoxide which would still require some kind of resperator. Hell for all we know maybe they do need to absorb oxygen. After all they only get a small part of their energy through photosynthasis.

Logan and his infamous decision

in Lore

Posted by: Lutinz.6915

Lutinz.6915

Has nobody here heard the mesmer mind control theory? :O There is one! It goes: Logan didn’t care much about royalty et cetera until he met Queen Jennah face to face. His own brother asks if she mesmer-whammies him and she says no, but she did. So Logan’s choice wasn’t so much a choice as it was, well, a result of being mind-whammied.

Ree Soesbee pretty much shot this down in an interview. She said that Logan and Jennah’s love was real and their was no mind control involved. The spell she did cast on Logan that bonded him to her Logan accepted willingly and it allowed her to call out to Logan when she was in danger.

Also if you look at her in game she spends alot of her dialog trying to convince Logan to go out and protect the world instead of just her.

Logan’s choice was basicly what it was on the surface, a choice between letting the woman he loved die or letting a freind die. The guilt of that is one of the big pieces of Logan’s story in GW2.

Logan and his infamous decision

in Lore

Posted by: Lutinz.6915

Lutinz.6915

I don’t see why Jennah is so integral. Kryta’s government could continue fine with the Legate Minister as the head of government in the event of the monarch’s death, so there’s really no reason to prioritize Jennah’s life over the life of literally everyone else in Tyria.

Except he (very probably) hates charr, which would make the truce impossible.

Play the Caudecus’s Manor dungeon, it’s pretty obvious who’s behind all of it.

Seriously, Caudecus in charge would be pretty awful for some things. We must consider the White Mantle is around, too, and which are the real goals of the mursaat.

A) Do we necessarily know if Caudecus was Legate Minister at the time?
B) Doesn’t the Ministry assist Jennah in public policy? By that point in the story you’d think the treaty would have been run through and ratified by the Ministry

Im not aware how long Caudecus has been Legate Minister but I get the impression he isnt new to the job.

As for the treaty, it was Jennah that caused it to happen AFTER the events at Ebonhawke that caused the breakup of Destiny’s Edge. She was one of the key individuals pushing for it, at least probably in part cause she got a glimpse of what the elder dragons were really like.

Note that before this no one was talking about a treaty. It took a hell of alot of work, a rather risky artifact recovery (Ghosts of Ascalon) and the right people in charge of both nations for the treaty even to see the light of day. On top of that, technically its only a treaty with the Iron Legion though the other two legions have to adhere to it while in Iron Legion territory or while representing the Iron Legion.

Its worth pointing out that there much of the plot to the first 20 levels of the human story is unresolved and points strongly towards a major consperacy with Caudecus at the top.

We know that the bandits are actively commiting acts to undermine Jennah’s popularity. We also know that they are heavily supported in the ministry. In the Missing Sister story a bandit goes so far as to name Caudecus as their benifactor.

These same bandits are supplying and assisting in training the Centaur forces attacking Kryta.

Most interesting is that there are strong hints to suggest that the bandits are infact a front for the White Mantle. This is reinforced by the fact that in many bandit lairs, bases and hideouts you can see this white symbol painted near the entrances that looks alot like the old White Mantle symbol.

Caudecus could very well be the leader of the White Mantle.

The impact of Jennah’s death would have probably been pretty severe to Kryta. It also would have likely meant the Charr and the Humans would still be at war.
