I remember Josh (the awesome guy who runs the team responsible for SAB) dropping a sentence that SAB will return “later this year”. But we have no news on exact dates.

When he heard about the Molten Alliance refugees resettling on Southsun Cove, he saw a chance to help other Consortium victims and get even with Noll. […]He obtained the gauntlets from that escapade and wears them now as a symbol of his newly adopted (and so far poorly executed) role as a champion of the weak…right before he set out for Southsun Cove to settle things with Noll.

Canach does want to help the refugees. He’s just not being a smartypants about it =p

What about the audio logs? Will we be able to hand them in? Or should we destroy them? There might be still valuable information on them. After all, why should the Molten Alliance else keep them up to spy on us.

PS: pfft, bug. Matthew is obviously a spy for the MA trying to divert our attention so that they can gather more data on us. =P

Welcome to the game! I hope you have fun. I will not be able to answer all your questions, but I’ll try to give some general tips.

First: GW2 is very unique in concepts and mechanics. Don’t expect everything to work as in GW1, but stay open to the new stuff and explore the novel options. It will be much more fun.

Ele build: builds come only in at lvl 10 and leveling builds are different from endgame builds. PvE in itself is fairly easy and I would reccomend choosing traits for the abilities they give you, not for the stats. Those you gain with gear.

Boss fights fun: Depends on your taste =) I find most of them enganging, but there is a large variation and many are being adjusted. You’ll find something you will like.

Guild creation: yup, go into a city, look on the map for a scroll, go there to pay 1 silver, done. It’s much harder finding people to fill the guild ^_~

Gathering: Buy all three gathering tools (sickle, axe, pick) at once, keep them updated, gather everything. Gives Exp and materials. Start with copper and update according to level (you’ll notice when you need the better ones).

Crafting: For Ele tailoring would be nice. As second maybe artificer or jewelcrafting. Cooking is rather expensive, might want to leave that for later. You can also change your profession for a small fee without loosing progress. So you can’t really make a mistake in choice.

Tips on levelling: explore. Discovering stuff gives exp, gathering gives Exp, Heart quests give Exp, catch all the events you come across, they give good rewards, crafting gives Exp. Almost everything you do gives Exp, making lvl a fairly smooth experience. If you do run out of stuff to do in your area still, go back to your main city, find the gate to Lions Arch (it’s marked on the map), which is the main hub here. In LA you will pop out surrounded by gates that lead to the other main cities and their starting zones. So you have huge amount of content available right from the start.

As in every MMO: have fun. Find some friends, test out what suits you best and roll with it =) Also don’t hesitate to ask ingame. People are usually very friendly here. There is the occasional troll, but you will find help almost always.

PS: PvP is separated from PvE. Go to the heart of the mists, and you instantly have maximum lvl, gear and all skills and traits available to customize your character. You can use it to test out builds and routines. If you love PvP, you might later also want to check out WvW.

Good luck and happy playing

Canach and the Pale Tree.

in Lore

Posted by: Meluna.1764

Meluna.1764

Why should Canach be separated? I guess there are two misconceptions at work here.

First: Canach is not a villain. I’m pretty sure he considers himself a hero (although he’s more of an anti-hero). He did bad stuff while under orders and saw the error of his ways, but refused to be punished because he doesn’t respect the jurisdiction of the LA council. He is rogue from the Consortium. Atm he’s trying to help the settlers (so much that players wish to side with him) and he helped raiding the Molten Alliance (he has the gloves). As he’s being chased by assassins, he can’t be picky about his methods and many Sylvari fight, so it’s nothing against the Sylvari ways.

Second: The Sylvari are not a hivemind. The dream is more a subconcious connection that they have no control over. They are not in constant contact. Also the Pale Tree has thousands of children now, she can not converse with all of them the whole time. It has been stated that atm she mostly speaks only to the firstborn and they kind of govern the Sylvari. The player characters constantly bothering her might also add to distraction. =P Plus: imagine how distracting it must be to hear Trahearne whine 24/7 XD

Go look at Mr. Foreman, his team is in charged of SAB and that’s not a part of Living Story at all.

Josh and his team have been integrated into the Living Story team because of their success. I still hope that means LS will eventually get a SAB substoryline when it reemerges =3 (once he emerges grom the pile of fangirls he is currently burried under)
Apart from this you are absolutely right. Arenanet has different teams working on different parts of the game. Dungeons are on a different team than WvW, etc. When watching the dev vids, they state which team they are part of. And it seems they are quite a crowd. So: looking good ^^

about lvling

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Meluna.1764

Meluna.1764

That happens. Usually, if you have the map at 100%, you should exceed the 15 lvls. Almost everything you do here gives you exp, which makes levelling very easy. A good tip is: buy the copper gathering tools (sickle/axe/pick) as soon as possible and gather everything. Gives exp and stuff to use. Crafting is a very easy way to level up. But since you enjoy questing (which I completely understand, so much fun), I would give you the advice of visiting other start areas.
Here is how: in the north of Queensdale (your starting area), you go to Divinitys Reach (human main city). In the upper parts there is a pretty garden (exploring will give you exp also) with a large purple gate (it’s on the map). When you step through the gate, you will reach LionsArch, the main Hub of the game. Around you in a circle are gates to all other main cities (of the other races). All cities lead to the starting area of the respective race. Just choose and have fun I found all starting areas to be exceptionally well made, probably to lure new players in. Find your favourite =)

My wife is experiencing the same issues. As she can’t log on, I am asking in her name. She is only sporadically online and had issues logging on before. After a password reset (she said it asks the serial code off her? you are supposed to keep that?) she could log on again but now receives notice again that the information is wrong.
Originally her account was a trial account during the Lost Shores trial. When we upgraded, her account number (the number behind the forum name) incremented and she appeared double in the game. This issue has been resolved but I highly suspect it has something to do with that? Would that be a possibility?

You know what would be even more awesome? After we got the achievement (and only then), make the items available for Karma. The 63k of the Cultural Weapons seems appropriate. Several reasons:
1. SAB gave me the chance to buy several weapons for many chars.
2. Karma dump, people have been complaining there are too few things to buy with Karma.
3. Altoholics will be very happy.
4. You need one transmutation crystal per backpiece to transmute it to baby-alts, so money to Arenanet and the dev who designed these beauties.
So that would be a Win-Win situation, yay?

Yeh, best way to do it is run to the bit on top beside the camp, there are 3 there, then drop off the side there and do a loop of the base, you should find at least 4 more down there, then run back up via the pirate ship crashed into the base, by which time you should only have a very short wait until they respawn, I did it pretty much alone yesterday fairly quickly.

Thank you so much. That was very helpful =)

I agree with you absolutely that achievements no longer available should be marked as such. To new players, this will be very confusing. This is a must-have if you deal with non-permanent content. Probably an oversight, but will hopefully corrected. I also thinkt the living world achievements should be collapsed into one tab with sub-tabs, as atm it is not recognisable as an ongoing event.

The Living Story rewards are thankfully not that much. For F&F it was one pair of exotic gauntlets, for the current it’s two backpieces mostly interesting for skins. So basically what you get is a unique design. I like that a lot, because people that participated get something special, while those that missed out do not loose essential things. The bonfire with the giant buff was even accessable to those that didn’t complete the event, which is perfect for the celebration it was supposed to represent. However, May I ask what you mean with ‘marking components as removed’. I agree on the achievements, which other components are you speaking of. Just to make sure I understand.

Meluna.1764

You mention that you don’t have to compete with other players on GW2 like you would on WoW but at least the competition, in it’s own strange way, encouraged you to talk and form parties with others and make friends.

Actually it encouraged me to leave the area if someone else arrived, because it almost always ended in only one getting what they wanted. If you talked to others because of that, conversation consisted solely of ‘could you leave so i can finish my quest?’ and variations thereof. The only social aspect were some community services such as unexpectedly opening trade windows asking mages for food and water.
Here I often talk to people, events get called and organised, people ask for help and answer questions. They are more generous and open towards new players.
I agree with Vayne that moving and typing at the same time makes it difficult, but I always find time to at least type a short hello. Maybe you were just unlucky, I found this community much more engaging than others. When are you online? Maybe try after working hours?

in game information about ‘important’ events with a time limit to complete would be useful and should be implemented.

Again, there was an ingame UI message that informed users about remaining time.
The nature of temporary content has been discussed in other threads, the short version is: Users asked for it, got what they asked for and are happy, other users complain because you can’t please everybody.
The living story content is just a small part of the world and more of a temporary amusement. If you don’t complete it, you don’t loose anything.

Correct me if im wrong but it was just a bar, in my mind i want an actual timer . Good example of this was with the final bit of the molten alliance, i thought the dungeon was over the 13th(as in you had the 13th to run it) but it was in fact the 12th. So when it was the 12th at 8pm (reset time) there was no dungeon. Im not sure what i missed out on as supposedly having a little extra cut scene to it but w/e it was i missed due how i interpreted the wording or misread it.

Yes it was a bar. It emptied regularely so when the bar was almost finished, you knew to hurry up. I agree that the design choice maybe wasn’t optimal, but implementing an exact timer is probably impossible, people would then complain that it finished a minute too early/late.
A possibility that might work would be to have a permanent announcement of clear dates about the current event:
A) in the launcher after login (where news are now and noone would read that either).
B) in the character login screen in a box at the side.
I’d prefer either way over unremovably clunky UI overlays any day. What do you think? Would people notice these announcements?

I found my experience to be the exact opposite.
People are very friendly and helpful.
The game design is centered on cooperation. And I do often find that reflected in gameplay. WoW which you mentioned is explicitly made to help you be a jerk towards your peers even when you not intend to. GW2 is the most social MMO I ever encountered.
The community I also found much more enjoyable. Of course you have some trolls in between. But noticably, the player base seems to have a fairly high average age and are thus very mature and considerate. Don’t take some individual trolls for the majority of players and don’t let them ruin the game for you. I agree with the others that you maybe should go to the guild forum and look for a nice, small guild to play with.

Probably using the trait that reduces fall damage.

Nope! If you are at the boat/bridge thing just walk off it to the west. There are a couple of ledges you can hop down onto. Then the final jump is onto the back of the shipwreck. You will only take a tiny bit of fall dmg.

Rhaps is correct. At the northern point of the island, where the sample is, you have some ledges you can land on. In the south of the island, just drop down. You faceplant and loose about half your health, but you’ll live. Happy porting ^_^

The problem with your explanation is that not everyone, including myself, check the web site or the forums. The time should have been shown on the F&F event IN GAME. It should have been made more clear as a lot of players missed out and are very frustrated.

I agree, there should have been an inconveniantly giant, unremovable entry at the right border of the UI that constantly showed remaining time. No wait, we had that but it was so tiny and unobtrusive that noone saw it.
So how about a popup that comes up every time I change map and can’t be closed for 10 sec to ensure I read it every time? Surely, that wouldn’t create any backlash =)

In an MMO, a lot of fun comes from other players. And even little things can make others happy, especially when unexpected. A friendly, polite answer already goeas a long way for many. I also like to do little, unexpected random acts of kindness, because fun. I encounter many that do the same. And I’d like to ask you for inspiration on little things you can do ingame, to make some strangers experience a tiny bit brighter.

- planting box-o-fun at waiting places: Whether it’s LionsArch or Jormag’s Claw spawn point. Planting fun items everyone can use always results in a lot of people running around having fun instead of just standing around bored.

- Mesmer ports: when I’m in a JP with my Mesmer, I call out in map chat if someone wants a port. I don’t take any rewards, the thanks make me happy. Especially in not really known JPs this leads to nice experiences. Have had it often that some people didn’t even know a JP existed there and were really happy when I pointed out the entrance and gave them assistance.

- Newbie donations: people new in the game benefit from things that are entirely useless to others. When I encounter a clear beginner asking confused basic questions, I sometimes send them 8 slot bags that just pile up useless in my bankslot. Costs me nothing and usually gets very enthusiastic responses.
