Green Arrow would approve disapprove!
Also your strawman about chat, I have a fix for that. Create a Party/Guild only chat box and bang, no more insipid and inane chatter.
it goes both ways. Only group/play with guildies, friends, peers…avoid speed runs, try not to hang out with jerks. /inspect becomes a non-issue,
Beyond that— IF someone has the audacity to criticize you gearing then—1) Take their advice!!! Maybe you don’t know everything and your experience in-game will improve with an optimal gear set. 2) Have the gorram self-confidence to stand up to them and defend your gearing decisions!! It’s your character and (hopefully) you built it that way for a reason.
Well then I will leave the argument at this:
You want this really badly because you don’t like being ignored when you whisper someone. Well grow a gorram pair of underpants shinnies and except that people will be rude and ignore you
You can’t tell me to grow underpants (which i can’t imagine is possible) and try to leave the argument at that.
The reasons for wanting /inspect go beyond having my msg requests ignored, and the reasons for not wanting /inspect are baseless and perpetuated by fear of the boogie man of MMOs…the dreaded….Elitists….
I’m not afraid of Elitists. I honestly couldn’t care less about them, nor have I even ever had bad experiences with them (was that a complete sentence?)… Rather, for me, it all comes down to the simple: I want to play my game the I way I want to play, which means people can mind their own business, trust that I can play my class, or just ask me if they are curious about my gear. :P
Welcome to Guild Wars 2!
Professions are, surprisingly, pretty evenly divided, however there are probably more Guardians and Warriors and less Engineers and Necromancers than other professions. Warriors and Guardians are relatively easy to play (especially Guardians), while Engineers and Necromancers have their share of balance issues and are slightly more difficult to play.
I found Ranger and Guardian to be the easiest professions to solo-level in PvE, if that’s what you’re looking for for a first-time player.
Also your strawman about chat, I have a fix for that. Create a Party/Guild only chat box and bang, no more insipid and inane chatter.

Firefly!
There is no reason that anybody should have to defend their gear. Other people should just accept it and either allow them in their group, or move on. Unfortunately, this is an ideal MMO world and just won’t happen. But /inspect will make this worse, and does not encourage players to be more accepting of other gear/play styles.
I don’t see any problem with allowing a disable option for /inspect.
Congratulations on getting your precursor!
On the other hand, is there a way to “test” a person’s RNG? curious
I’m on TC, and I have heard from a few people there that Anvil Rock has become more popular for roleplaying (but don’t take my word on it, perhaps someone from AR could provide insight?).
I like the idea of being able to disable it and certainly see no problems with it.
An auto inspect feature is only for being able to critique someone else’s build, which is rude and presumptuous, unless invited by the person being critiqued upon themselves.
This is a ridiculous claim. God forbid, i don’t have every piece of armor/weapon in the game memorized and i get curious as to what that shiny thing that person has equipped might be.
Or maybe i see an Ele that looks like they have a similar set-up as me and i want to see what kind of sockets they have.
I mean, who does that? Just goes around, inspecting people’s gear, for the sole purpose of making you feel bad. If someone exhibits that kind of behavior, it’s not because of /inspect, it’s probably because they are a bad person.
Whisper that player and ask? I’ve done this before, and players have been more than helpful.
I’ve done this before and not gotten a response :/ It would be much easier for everyone to not have to bother them at all.
To quote Wesley as the Dread Pirate Roberts – “Get used to disappointmet”
They don’t want to share, then you leave it at that and walk away, it won’t kill you.
And to answer who does that, see WoW.
If we’re gunna base our tools on the “worst of the worst players” then let’s get rid of the chat window while we’re at it. That way no one’s feelings get hurt. If you really wanna chat that bad, just open up mumble or TS.
And if you so concerned about criticism then play a single player game. It’s an MMO, so dealing with other humans is kind of its niche.
Regardless, no matter how mean this mythical “elitist” can be, they cannot force you to play a certain way. Only you can decide that. Don’t cave in to bullies. This is why we can’t have nice things, because the bullies have won already. Any addition is held under the scrutiny of "Oh! but how will the “elitists” use this against me!"
If you would like to use the chat as an example… Then if /inspect was added to the game, I would like the option to disable it for my account. People are abusive in chat, and I can block them. I cannot block people from inspecting my character (unless they added a disable option, which I would see no problem with). And it’s very possible that it’s the other way around (abusive players are louder)! However, people have already shared experiences of being rejected based on their pinged gear without an inspect feature. Adding it would make it easier for players to kick others out for this very reason.
On the other hand, would you support a cosmetic inspect, or are you more interested in the stats?
Privacy: The state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people…
…I cannot, however, justify inspect otherwise when you could simply ask or require players to ping their gear (but at least then the player has a choice of whether or not, therefore playing the game they want to).
In order to respect people’s right to not be disturbed, you suggest as an alternative that I ask the person about their gear instead. Isn’t that more disruptive than simply clicking /inspect on them and being on my way, with that person remaining unaware that anything even just happened?
I suppose that also depends on your definition of disturbed! I certainly wouldn’t mind (or be disturbed) if someone asked me about my gear. That said, I do think ANet should make pinging gear easier. Then I could just ping it in my response, or if I’m not interested in sharing, then I won’t do it at all (though I don’t see that happening).
However, /inspect can disrupt a player’s way of playing a game when someone doesn’t agree with their gear/build in a particular instance. I think you are probably the vocal majority (such as seen in the forums), but overall minority in that you would not abuse this. You would inspect because you were curious about someone’s gear, not because you were going to judge their play style.
Several people have commented also about supporting a cosmetic inspect. And I’m sorry you never heard a response. =/ Mine have all been positive, which can certainly make either one of us biased!

Privacy: The state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people
The word privacy probably varies in definition based on your own personal opinion.
Privacy in an MMO to me (being completely aware that it is a game not real life) means that I can play the game how I want without being scrutinized, judged, watched by other players for x, y, z reasons. How I choose to play Guild Wars 2 is my business (/inspect would allow you to see the general type of build I am going for, the amount of time I may have spent in getting my exotic gear or a legendary, etc.).
I can, in a way, understand inspect in the form of group play. I cannot, however, justify inspect otherwise when you could simply ask or require players to ping their gear (but at least then the player has a choice of whether or not, therefore playing the game they want to).
Hey guys!
This may not be the place to ask, but I’ll go ahead any way.
A lot has changed on my account since the Halloween and Wintersday holiday events, including characters that I still (or rather, don’t) play. As a reminder, the Halloween event awarded players with a Trick-or-Treat bag and the Wintersday event awarded players with a Toymaker’s bag. Both of these are soulbound (and don’t worry, I was aware when deleting the character that had received these two items that they were soulbound).
They are sitting in my bank at the moment, and I am wondering if there’s any chance of these items becoming account bound? Is it something that should perhaps be suggested?
Thanks!
The biggest problem, as has been mentioned a few times in this long thread, with an /inspect feature is the lack of privacy and user control.
A better solution, for both sides of the argument, would probably just be an easier way to ping your gear and skill build (like in GW1). If a group requires you do it, you may either comply or don’t. If you aren’t interested in sharing your build, then find another group. But at least this way, players have a choice of whether or not to share that information rather than having no control. If you are worried about a person’s gear based on efficiency or MF, then have them ping their gear and skills. If they don’t comply, then kick them from the group. It’s really not a big deal. Let people play the way they want to play. This thread proves that there are people out there who aren’t so picky about gear/playstyles (as long as they work) so you’re sure to find someone that will work for you.
I’ve died due to glitchy Jumping Puzzles before, and I would be pretty angry if it was permanent.
Thanks for the fast reply mercury!
I think I’d prefer to stay on ANet’s good side, and probably just keep an eye on it through my account and let her know asap when a spot has opened up. Worse case scenario, you’re right – guesting isn’t a bad idea. I doubt she’d be interested in WvW anyway.
Thief. Can’t bring myself to level one up, but I imagine it would be fun to be nearly unkillable and can just run away from everything instead of fighting.
Agreed. I gave up leveling my thief, but I imagine that a level 80 one is a lot of fun to play.
Hey guys!
She hasn’t purchased the game yet, but I’ll ask before just in case.
She will want to be on my server, and unfortunately my server is also a very busy/full one. She doesn’t have the time to watch the server list (all the time) to see when it becomes available. During those times, I’m willing to help out just so she can get into the same server I’m on. (I’m not asking about methods of server transfer.)
So, if we authenticate my IP address, would it be okay for me to access her account just so we can cover more time to maybe snag that spot in the server? We live in different locations (other side of the country), so our IP addresses would indeed be very different.
Thank you for any insight!
Some are. Like now there is a Miniature Reef Rider available as random loot in Southsun Cove. It’s time limited tho, to keep it “special” or somewhat exclusive. Earlier (as I believe they are removed now) you could get a mini Karka, Karka Hatchling and Reef Drake.
I don’t really have any strong opinions on if they should drop or not in a more normal setting. In original GW as far as I remember you could only get them in your birthday gift, getting special codes from magazine or events, collectors editions and or possibly for completing special events related to in-game holidays.
I sort of like them being special. Even tho I rarely find myself using one. Maybe if I had a new box in my Hero menu, or a own bag for minies I would think more of them. All to often I forget them in some other bag then my Safe bag, and poof its gone when i “Deposit all collectibles”.
I perhaps have misinterpreted the OP’s post, but I think s/he means that mini pets should be able to pick up loot for you (instead of pressing the F button).
Updated! Guardian now has the highest population, as well as the lowest population percentage of players under level 80 with that particular profession. Meanwhile, Warrior is the second highest population, but also the highest population percentage of players under level 80.
why not use surveymonkey or something like that?
Personally, I’ve never used Survey Monkey… But this seemed easier, either way, and it gives players a chance, if they so wish, to explain (as some have said they get tired of x profession, etc.).
Thank you again for all those who have contributed, and I look forward to future contributions! Perhaps with enough data, we may see some significance (why does Guardian, for example, have the most players and the most players at level 80?).
(edited by Mimir.4690)
Quick update.
We had a fix that appeared to solve the issue in this build but it may only be solving it for new characters. A more comprehensive fix is being worked out on our internal servers and we are working towards getting this live asap.
Thank you Jon, this is really great to hear!
The original post has been updated with all current results, including total for each profession.
The interesting part, however, may be the relationship between levels 40-79 with 80 of each profession, hence the percentages. For example, Warrior is currently the most popular listed profession so far in this poll… But also has the highest percentage of players under level 80.
There is no point to this poll, except perhaps to see the relationship between a level 40 and a level 80 player via their chosen profession. This was actually inspired by a thread in one of the Profession forums, where the players were talking about the rarity of a specific class at the higher level (assuming that at character creation, as most polls present, that the classes are pretty evenly divided).
Thanks for all of you who have replied, and thanks to anybody else who may wish to contribute! The more numbers, the better.
Regardless of whether that census is out dated or not, I do think it is probably safe to assume that those players had all intended to make a Necromancer, and the other selected professions.
With that said… It isn’t about the specific popularity of a profession. There could be a 2% difference between a Necromancer and the most popular. However, upon personal observation, Necromancers typically do not last past the first 30 or so levels and at higher-level zones they become more rare. We therefore need to consider, instead, the levels people have reached when playing certain Professions.
For fun, which will probably not receive many results, I created a poll based on professions and their levels (over 40). That may give us some kind of insight into how higher levels relate to professions.
I’ll start…
- Necromancer, 61-70
There are a number of great surveys out there, whether from pre-release or current, that relate to the profession, race, and gender demographics of the game. Most of these polls focus on the character creation aspect, rather than the leveling process.
At level 40, you are half way (level wise) to the level cap of 80. You have likely had experience with playing with profession builds, and some time to experiment with elite skills. This poll will focus, instead of creation, on how far you have gotten with various professions starting at level 40.
To participate in the poll, simply state all (if you choose) professions that are over level 40. You may specify the exact level, or use any of the following ranges (ie. 40-50, 51-60, etc.). Note: This does not take into account any potential future leveling development, and instead will focus on the levels at the time of this poll.

And yet players were able to reproduce it over a month ago?
Players play the game substantially more than the developers do, but there’s really no way that couldn’t be the case. Anet has around 300 employees, so let’s assume that all they do all day is playtest, splitting their time equally between the professions. That would be roughly 1,500 hours per week spent looking for bugs.
But according to Wikipedia, GW2 has sold three million copies as of January. Let’s cut that in half, to take into account the people who bought it but don’t really play much at all. Now let’s say Necromancers have one tenth the number of players as they would if each profession were equally represented, so that’s 1/80th of the total, or 18,250 total players. Now let’s assume they play an average of one hour a day on their Necros (some play much more, some play less).
That’s 91,250 hours spent per week playing the Necro, more than 60 times the number I gave Anet, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say my numbers were exaggerating in favor of your point.
And that’s what the players do – we find the bugs, and then we report them. The rest is up to ANet to respond and produce the results. About a month ago, a Dev had responded to the issue saying that he had not experienced any issues. He did test it, and he tested it incorrectly or he blatantly lied.
Nonetheless, about the demographics, this may be interesting to some of you…
http://gw2census.com/charts.php?pie=total÷=charprofessionc
There have been occasional surveys done and stuff posted on reddit.
Besides that, just make a mental count of how many times you see them in PvP and PvE (hint: not much).
Actually, I see them all the time. About one-eight of the time in PvE and WvW, actually. The other day I was in an Arah pick-up group with 3 Necros (I was one of them). It ended up being kinda a mistake just because one of the bosses had a massive condition reduction effect and low-cooldown massive AoE damage that was overwhelming our Deathshrouds, but everything else was easy. I have to say, popping Epidemic on a mob that has three Necros wailing on it is absolutely hilarious.
That said, anecdotal evidence is notoriously inaccurate and vulnerable to observer bias. I would be really interested to see some user data from Anet, irrespective of this thread.
@Blaine Tog
So in your mind, Anet have been doing all they could for this bug?
I am generally dissatisfied that Anet doesn’t devote more resources to bug fixes and balance. For this specific bug, though, they were only able to reproduce it 15 days ago. In game development time, that’s basically nothing.
And yet players were able to reproduce it over a month ago?
@Lookitsandrea
Yet they did answer that for the necro minions too, like 1 month after release.
Don’t get your hope too high.
How disappointing, though not surprising.
1. Reduced cool downs for some skills (30 seconds for warhorn? I don’t remember it being that high).
2. Fix the downed HP bug.
3. New avatar for Lich Form.
1. She is my favorite character, appearance wise. She really looks like a Necromancer!
2. I love RP, and again she is my favorite character in personality, history, and story.
3. The Necromancer is actually a lot of fun to play compared to other classes. I’d rank Guardian second in terms of just fun, for me.
4. I love the rarity of the class… In upper level zones, there’s a good chance I’m one of the only Necromancers roaming around. Makes me feel pretty unique!
5. And of course, DS while jumping off of cliffs to avoid enemies.
This is a bug that discourages group play… Who wants to take a character that when downed, is pretty much automatically and determinedly dead?
Either way, I sent feedback into the ANet Support. They responded that "The Development Team is aware of this issue at this time and they are currently working on addressing it. " That may be a standard response, but I’ll try to take some comfort from it and hope that it is true.
I am not sure what region locking is. If you are having trouble accessing your account, you can contact Customer Support, and they will assist you.
Good luck. =)
I could (and probably am) be wrong, but I was under the impression that region locking happens at registration… If you purchase a serial code from NA, then that serial code (or game account) cannot be accessed anywhere outside of NA.
In situations like these, it would be helpful to have a “sent” folder with the 10 most recent sent mail that can’t be deleted and is just automatically updated. Though that probably won’t happen. :P
I hope you get all of your mats back. If your account was compromised, then perhaps you can get your account roll-backed to when you have most, if not all, of those items.
Out of curiosity… Would there be a notification of some sort to let you know that an additional reward would be available and that you must speak to so and so to receive it?
Well you know you get the medal with the karma, silver and exp.
You get that and also the reward from the villager. You would have to walk to the villager yourself and collect it.
Why?:
This adds more of a do to the game, its more rewarding and feels more rewarding.
It would make people do more events and be more active (preety much for no reason)
From an RP perspective, I would really love this. Plus, more rewards is always a good thing as a player.
As long as I didn’t have to guess who provided an additional reward and who doesn’t.
There have been many suggestions for this, and I continue support it. I don’t keep my minis around anymore because they’ve just become a nuisance (having to reequip them every time I rezone and deposit collectibles, which is pretty often).
I would prefer a mission, scavenger type hunt… That could really test your skills as a player if ANet implemented it correctly.
Out of curiosity… Would there be a notification of some sort to let you know that an additional reward would be available and that you must speak to so and so to receive it?
We found out about this bug over a month ago, and spent quite a bit of time trying to get a response/recognition from a Dev.
Right. So from what I know about the game development pipeline, that means there probably wasn’t enough time to a) nail down exactly what was causing the bug, b) exactly what was needed to fix it, c) text the fix, d) test the fix in a live environment, and e) get the fix ready for the next code push.
That lack of response for this particular issue reveals an underlying problem that some people are addressing here: that Necromancers are, in general, just completely ignored.
It’s like this with every profession and every bug. From the perspective of a Necro main, it may look like you’re being ignored, but from the developer’s perspective, they have hundreds of issues they need to resolve at any one time across a variety of game modes.
For an example of what I mean, the Engineer trait Deployable Turrets straight-up didn’t work until a patch or two ago, and it looks like the fix they implemented caused it to break in other ways. This is a big game with a lot of bugs and glitches, and while ANet’s feet should absolutely be held to the fire to fix them, it’s myopic to think there’s some kind of conspiracy to ignore one profession or another. Even Mesmers are finding new bugs and glitches with nearly every patch.
You are right that I am biased because I main a Necromancer (although I’m a very casual player – I haven’t even reached my first level 80 yet in 9 months of playing), and I certainly don’t have any serious knowledge of all the bugs other classes have… However, one thing that really strikes me about this issue, as opposed to specific traits… is that 1/3 Downed HP affects the entire class, no matter your play style (unless you only PvP), no matter your build, etc. The more important fact, however, is that they failed to even respond to the issue after weeks of posting in the forums. I understand that they are busy, however when this is a bug that is affecting every single PvE and WvW Necromancer (again, regardless of what traits, builds, etc. they use) then that’s a problem. I would expect, and hope, that they would extend that courtesy to other classes as well and if there was an issue like this with a Warrior, or a Mesmer, and I played those classes… Then I would certainly be posting about it.
That is an issue more to do with dead zones than dead servers. Even on a “Very High” population server some zones are still dead.
I wouldn’t mind seeing some kind of underpopulation “overflow”. I don’t know the numbers, but if active server 1 has 100 people in a zone regularly, while inactive server 2 and 3 only have about 20 per zone… then perhaps those inactive servers can overflow until they cap at 100? (numbers are randomly chosen) Of course, I’m not sure how that would help those people who do not get into the overflow, but perhaps the general idea expanded could work.
There is a bit of a problem with that, you lose all WvW buffs when in overflow.
I don’t play WvW – are those buffs only for playing WvW? If so, then I don’t see a problem with this for PvE only. I wouldn’t expect any kind of underpopulation overflow server for WvW.
They apply everywhere in PvE and WvW. There is only one server which doesn’t really benefit from the buffs, Vabbi in the EU.

Thanks for the clarification/information! I can certainly see where that would be problematic then.
I know a few people who would buy the game if it was available on PS. And as much as I would love to play those individuals by having them also be able to connect with PC players, I am not sure I would want the console community to play along…
As for the controls, I think they would be fine. DC Universe has a lot of information/controls, combos, attacks, etc. and it does pretty good once you get the hang of it. However, doesn’t the PS Network tend to stay exclusive?

Didn’t they just find out about this bug like two weeks ago? It probably takes them at least that long just to get fixes put into testing.

That lack of response for this particular issue reveals an underlying problem that some people are addressing here: that Necromancers are, in general, just completely ignored. This is still a bug, so I’m going to bump this.

Sigh, how disappointing… I was hoping that my short break would mean it would be fixed by the time I get back.
Alright. I’m not too familiar with WvW so I’ll trust your guys’ judgment on that! It would just be nice if there was an easier way to get people you refer to the server you’re on without wasting x weeks of progress. Oh well.
It may just be me, but I don’t really see the “delete all characters for a free transfer” as a fair argument. That new player should be allowed to play with friends without a penalty – this would allow that (and I know, guesting would as well). As for the WvW… I don’t see this messing that up. It was problematic before because people were transferring, for free, every week. This is just one free transfer most likely for new players who may not have even tried WvW yet. Anyway, just a suggestion!
EDIT: Yes, I’m aware new players can pick a server. However, in order to play, they must pick a server that isn’t full. I’m on Tarnished Coast, and my sister would like to join me there… However, TC is almost always full (It took me quite a while to find an open spot before snagging it). If she wants to play the game, she’ll have to settle with a server she doesn’t want and then rely on guesting. The free transfer could be for players like that – that one time chance to change their server.
(edited by Mimir.4690)
Hello!
So I am recruiting a family member into buying the game soon. Naturally, she will want to be on the server I play on. Guesting aside, it is a different experience when you are actually a member of that server. However, she has only 2 options: 1) she can wait until my very busy server has an open spot or, 2) she can start playing right away but then have to pay a $20 fee to transfer.
Perhaps instead, ANet could offer all new accounts a one-time free world transfer that lasts 1 month. This will give new players time to acclimate to the game and a chance to play while waiting to get to the server they want. Obviously, it should only be used once (after which they must pay) and only valid for one month.
Opinions?
No to guild taxes…
For the OP, this reminds me of Pokemon. It was nice knowing that I had more money in the bank at home, but money wasn’t as important to me in Pokemon as it is in GW2. I could see how this might be useful to some players, but I’d probably still just keep to my current method of depositing every level.
I completely agree with removing legendaries from the TP, but then again I also think they should revamp the entire premise behind attaining a legendary (I’d prefer a challenging story-mission chain instead).
