This weekend i had horrible experience with FotM lvl 48 daily, one guy advertised for heavy classes only so we end up with 3 guards, 1 warrior (guy who posted on lfg) and his friend elementalist. We did it in about 1h30min without wipe, what a horrible horrible experience. Just imagine what would gear inspection do…….

I am not entirely sure if you are pro or anti-inspect, but based on the sarcasm I am going to assume that you are pro. And if that’s the case (or maybe this is the point you were trying to make), then gear inspection may have not allowed that group to form because you may have passed judgment on this amazing group before giving them the chance to show that you guys worked really well together. But I could misinterpreting the tone of your post. :P

But linking gear and seeing someone’s class are open to abuse, yet there are no “cosmetic-only” restrictions on those tools, so why would you do that for inspect?

There’s no need for any bizarre options on inspect, just like there’s no need for any bizarre options for linking gear or seeing someone’s class.

From the consensus of dissenters:

Because it is their choice to ping said gear, Inspect with no ability to disable takes the choice out of the hands of the inspectee, and isn’t choice better

Actually, people abuse gear linking by “forcing” you to link gear (if you refuse, you get kicked). So the choice is out of the hands of the inspectee, and therefore really isn’t any different from inspect in terms of how easily it is abused.

Personally, I would rather be kicked after finding out that the players want to know my gear before getting kicked by being judged on my gear.

Yes it does apply, as they are both useful tools that can be open to abuse and elitism. Examples of people who abuse being able to see someone’s class: you get people who say “NO RANGERS” for a dungeon, see that you’re a ranger (because they can see your class, without your consent I might add), and kick you. Or you get people that say “ZERK WARRIOR ONLY” for a dungeon, see that you’re not a zerk warrior, and kick you, etc.

I am not sure what tool you are talking about? /inspect is a tool. The little symbol that indicates your class is not a tool – it’s an icon.

-snip-

If you choose to link your gear, whether publicly or in a party, then you are choosing to, and should be aware of the potential for abuse (granted, you may not be, but at least you were allowed to make that choice and not forced because someone can randomly inspect your gear whether you want them to or not). If you say, “Go ahead and inspect me”, then you have control. If you say, “No, sorry, you can’t look at my stats”, then at least you have that choice as well.

As for the class argument, I have no logical response, because it truthfully isn’t a logical argument and does not really apply to the /inspect request.

I would agree with the others in starting on a Guardian – this was my second class after I struggled with a mesmer, and learning the game with a Guardian was much easier.

That said, if you get the basics of the Guardian down, I’d also suggest getting a Ranger. They get a bad reputation in Dungeons and WvW, but they are the easiest class to solo level with.

They could have it so you can swap specs for 5-10 silver if you do it without a trainer. Like maybe 5 in PvE and 10 in WvW. Scaling depending on player level, and maybe decrease the price at the trainer.

Are you suggesting that it should be more expensive to swap traits through the builds? For frugal players, this would make build swapping relatively mute because they would still have to take the time to travel to find a trainer. On the other hand, I think a trainer should cost more money (although the whole money sink is a frustrating one to begin with) because you are basically paying their salaries (if you look at the game economy that way).

No, I’m saying it should cost more to swap on the fly. Like in the middle of dungeons, or running around in the open world.

Right, and I was saying that I don’t agree that it should cost more. :P For players who may be more frugal than others, the increased costs of swapping on the go would be enough to just take the time to travel to a trainer. This would make a major point of allowing us to swap our traits without a trainer mute – players would still be wasting some of their time going to a trainer. I do not necessarily think that the cost of swapping in the open world should be less, but certainly not more.

Good idea. For the portal, the asura may not need time travel because the mist handle all of that. So they may have discovered a temporary opening into the mists that echo that time.

Good point!

Though I had just thought of another question: It would be very interesting, and perhaps very uncomfortable, for Charr to play these events because I could not see any of the humans that would likely assist with the missions being accommodating to Charr players. There could probably be a work around for it. I’m just full of questions, with no coherent answers. :P

Wintersday Mini-Pet Materials

Mimir.4690

Hey guys!

So I was cleaning through my bank today when I saw that I still had materials from Wintersday to create the mini-pets (of course, I didn’t know that’s how you made them). I did some research, and found I could make 4 of the 5 toy mini-pets. I, however, have one left over. Of course, I went into the TP and noticed that the two materials that are offered on the TP I didn’t need (I still had 250 left). The 3rd material (the cogs), unfortunately, is not offered on the TP because it is account bound (that’s just silly!) so I’m left with 250, 250, and 100 stacks of materials and one more toy frame.

TL;DR Basically, is there a chance that I could get the last materials I need for my last mini in the next Wintersday event? I know that holiday events are likely to repeat, or be similar in nature, but I wasn’t sure if they would distribute the same loot (you guys may not know either). Thank you!

PS: Do you think it’s worth keeping them?

With that said, Halloween will happen every year, and just like in Guild Wars 1, the Mad King is the mascot. There is a chance that the costume may vary slightly each year (which I would actually prefer!), but a costume will very likely be offered every year.

How do you consider /inspect intrusive? Every game i’ve played that had /inspect, i honestly couldn’t tell you how many times i’ve been inspected. It could’ve been zero times or it could’ve a thousand times. I will never know because it has never intruded on my personal being.

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it does it make a sound?

Yes – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound

The tree falling causes the oscillation of pressure through the air, just because no one is there doesn’t mean this didn’t happen.

So how is it intrusive, that person still looked at your character without your permission. Just because you don’t know it happened doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. What your arguing is whether or not someone was inconvenienced by it, which they may or may not end up being.

Seems much less inconvenient then being asked to ping your gear. What bothers you about people seeing your gear? If someone looks at your gear, without you knowing, and doesn’t do anything as a result, what’s the issue? I wont accept oscillating air pressure as an answer, unfortunately.

I mean, they can already get an idea of what you’re wearing just by looking at you. Maybe you should suggest an image blur so people can’t see what your character looks like, since you’ll just look like low-rez pixels.

Hmm… bet’cha can’t, thanks to the liberal use of T-stones.

An /inspect would be a bad addition to GW2. If you give someone a tool to make an idiot of themselves with, rest assured, they will.

The usefulness of the tool has nothing to do with how dedicated people are to making an idiot of themselves using it.

If someone is an idiot, rest assured they will make an idiot of themselves no matter what tool they use.

Dismissing an extremely useful tool just because idiots will try and abuse it is very bad design. There’s tons of useful things in the game currently that could potentially be abused by a big enough idiot. That doesn’t make those things any less useful.

Also: the game itself can’t enforce discriminatory actions. For example, some groups already discriminate by requiring you to link your gear. Does that mean we should not have the ability to link items? Of course not. As another example, some groups discriminate by requiring you to be a certain class. Does that mean we should not have the ability for you to see what class someone is? Of course not. Likewise, some people may discriminate by inspecting your gear and kicking you if your gear is insufficient. Does that mean we should not have the ability for you to inspect? Of course not.

Rather, yes of course we shouldn’t. Because it empowers those who would misuse the tool. Don’t give a monkey a handgun, I’d say-it “won’t end well”, as our Sylvari friend would say.

Feel free to disagree; I don’t see how individuals at the opposite end of this argument will ever change their opinion, and to each their own. This kind of threads are rather useless when it comes down to prove “who’s right”. It’s a game, let’s just be OK with the idea that people are allowed to dissent.

Following your metaphor: So guns shouldn’t exist because if you give them to monkeys they will misuse them? tsk tsk, horrible logic.

But horrible logic aside, being able to link gear and see the class of other people aren’t “handguns”, they’re more like hammers and screwdrivers i.e. useful tools.

And those hammers and screwdrivers are safer, albeit still open to abuse, than a handgun. Rather than implementing an inspect (assuming it does not have the ability to allow people to disable it), ANet could simply implement a cosmetic-only inspect and a better way to ping builds and gear for those who choose to. The easiest solution, of course, would be to just implement /inspect and allow players to choose one of three options: “Inspect Enabled”, “Inspect Cosmetic Enabled Only”, “Inspect Disabled” or something similar.

I do miss Guild Wars 1, and as much as I would love the chance to spend a month reliving the lore of that game, I am trying to figure out how it would fit into the lore of this game. Living Story, Southsun, the Dragon Festival, etc. all have a purpose in the game’s lore. What would be the purpose of sending players (other than for that nostalgia) back to Guild Wars 1? Or, rather, what would be the purpose of sending characters back to Guild Wars 1? So this would need to somehow fit into GW2 lore.

The Asurans would probably be the only ones who could handle the portals. I’m not sure if time travel has ever been experimented on successfully in the Guild Wars Universe, but we then would need to find a reason why the Asurans would be experimenting on time travel, why they would allow other players to go through these portals… Or is it an experiment gone awry? Then, of course, we would need some kind of combination plot inside of the old Guild Wars. I would love love love to see this if it could be implemented properly.

It would be difficult, without any specific numbers of actual population, to tell you what’s the most active server. With that in mind, however, one possible indication is the WvW Leaderboards. I can say from first-hand experience that Tarnished Coast, ranked #4 on the boards, is a very active server. However, WvW does not dictate it entirely so proceed with caution.

If you are looking for a more active PvP server, you may also consider Anvil Rock (a large portion of the top PvP players on the leaderboards are from AR).

(PS: A lot of players have also been trying to get into Blackgate, so I would rank that as very active as well.)

This is pretty much my premise. Now, if there were rewards that went along with being the top on leaderboards (like higher RNG, or something crazy) then I could understand why people who be pretty upset about this. Otherwise, it isn’t worth it. Everyone knows that the people at the top have likely exploited the achievement points early on in the game. I only look at WvW.

First, I’d suggest changing the title because it doesn’t really tell you what you are suggesting.

Second, I completely agree, and this has been brought up several times in these forums. I have also willingly said that I don’t mind the costs of changing my traits. However, being able to save my builds, and especially my traits, would be so helpful. They had it in GW1, and why they don’t have it in this game is a mystery.

On the other hand, the issue may be because it costs money to change traits – if a player accidentally changes their build, and are charged for those changes, that would likely cause an outburst (so there would have to be a verification button of some sort). But really, it needs to be added. I also don’t necessarily think this feature should cost money – buying three slots, for each character, can be a pretty hefty purchase for something the game should really already have. Maybe they give you a couple free ones per character, and then you can buy extras if you’d like.

Otherwise, I don’t see your “everyone is level 80” as a good argument, because then everyone will just be level, for example, 100. It really doesn’t matter what level the cap is at (unless it’s unlimited), you are always going to see a lot of players at that top level because people like to breeze through to the highest level.

Either way, I really hope that level caps do increase with expansion packs. It will definitely help those players who are at 80 and want something else to do.

I disagree with this. As others have stated, the problem with the leaderboards isn’t the daily/monthly achievements but rather the points that were exploited prior.

Awarding points for dailies and monthlies allows more casual players, such as myself, a chance to get achievement points even if I miss the big events. You can get a ton of achievement points from doing the Secrets of Southsun event, and comparable to the dailies/monthlies, it is much larger. For people who cannot make these events, or finish the events, the dailies and monthlies are another way to continue to get achieve points when all the others are eventually filled up.

ANet is actually, believe it or not, pretty lenient when it comes to in-game swearing in the map chat (they do not follow whispers, parties, guilds, etc. unless you are reported). You can, with some sense of responsibility and control, get away with swearing in the map chat if those swear words are not directed at someone else. If you say F You! then you are verbally attacking someone. If you are surprised and are suddenly killed by some players in WvW and say, “Oh snap!” then they likely will not suspend you for it.

That is actually not true. It does not matter if you direct it at another player or not.
All that matters is if another player reports you for it. If you type it in to map chat and someone else can read it, you can be reported. If your reported, there is a good chance you will be suspended, depending on what was said.

There are conflicting responses to this, then. Perhaps this should be made more clear, because some players here saying that you can get away with a word or two as long as it is not directed, while others are saying that one curse word can give you the 3 day warning.

If you can get suspended for saying a curse word that is not directed at anyone, and implies no racism or discrimination, then regardless of what the ToS says, that seems absolutely extreme. I myself don’t cuss in game, but I don’t care if anyone else says “Oh kitten!” because they fell off of a cliff and died, or was dominated by a zerg, etc. That’s such a silly thing to be suspended over.

Realizing You Love the Necromancer?

Hello fellow Necros.

You are probably (or hopefully) in this forum because you are either interested in the class, or because you already love it. We are a passionate group of individuals!

At what point, or when, did you realize that you loved the Necromancer?

I ask, because I had recently had an experience with my level 64 Necromancer in a story mission with some krait. I was struggling against mobs of them towards the end of the mission, when finally I realized that I had a second weapon set (my first being D/W, my second being staff, my utilities being wells) that I should be using as AoE damage. And it worked beautifully! I had previously just thought the Necromancer (though my highest level profession) was just a pretty nifty class, and I liked using the dagger… It wasn’t until I really started looking at the potential of marks, AoE damage vs. 1v1 melee that I saw how great this class can be, and is. And I know this is fairly minor to what the class can do, but I am excited to really get deep in my traits, etc.

How about you guys? What/when made you realize you love the Necromancer? We know it has its problems, but like I said earlier… If you’re here, you must be sticking around for something.

Hello, and welcome to Guild Wars 2!

This game is classified as an MMO – a Massive Multiplayer Online game. Therefore, you will be playing online at all times (in order to play the game you will always need an internet connection).

There are “heart events” which are your basic quests to help you level in PvE and get World Completion. You will also have your story missions to help you “beat” the story part of the game. With that said, the story missions are all instanced, which means you play by yourself if you choose to (you can also choose to bring a party with you, but it’s optional).

Other aspects of the game are done with other players around. If you are doing a heart event, there is a good chance someone is doing it as well. However, only you can get credit for what you do (others don’t get credit for what you do). Everyone also gets the same loot/experience if you kill an enemy together. There are a lot of things to do in the game – such as crafting, dungeons, PvP, and WvW (World vs. World vs. World), and some of these will require playing with other players. This is an MMO, though, and it’s a part of its genre. You will never be forced to party up with players, however you will probably find that it’s fun to do sometimes.

Good luck!

Why no /inspect ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mimir.4690

The reason there is no /inspect feature in pve is because it is co-operative.

Players are encouraged to work together to achieve a common goal, not exclude one another based on perceived bad gear or skill choices. How hard is it to suggest the use of certain skills/utilities, or that a player might feel they get more out of their profession if they used some XYZ-stat gear?

God forbid that we actually have to communicate with someone instead of /inspect and denying them content just because of our own preconceptions.

/inspect has no place in pve when it is so easy to ping gear and type traits anyway; the choice lies with the player being asked- long may it remain so.

You would be 100% right if /inspect was designed for the sole means of excluding one another based on perceived bad gear or skill choices.

There are more, positive functions /inspect can bring. If you only focus on one, negative function a tool could bring, your severely discrediting its potential.

You can use the chat box to deny people from groups or make fun of people. But we wont advocate getting rid of the chat box because it also brings positive aspects to the game.

And i guess it’s a good thing that, in the current state of the game, no one ever gets denied from groups based on gear/builds. Everyone holds hands and sings along and no one’s mean to eachother, thanks to the lack of an inspect feature.

And as a cooperative game, an /inspect tool allows for even less communication. Rather than actually asking someone about their gear, instead you just peek for yourself.

I still don’t understand why anybody would want an /inspect when there are so many other ways to get the information you need, in a convenient way, without all of the cons of an /inspect tied to it. Cosmetic only inspect, better ways to ping builds/gear, the option to disable inspect if you choose too. I feel like pro-inspect people are not willing to make any negotiations.

What’s convenient about alt+tabbing to scour through skins on Dulfy to try to identify a piece of gear, when i could just /inspect?

you may say, “well, just ask them!” In a perfect world, this would be great. But people don’t always respond and it would be much easier to not even have to inquire if i could just /inspect.

I agree we should encourage more communication, but frankly the game-play is so fast paced i’m hard pressed find an opportunity to ask the Ele in my group how i can compliment his build. Would be much easier just to /inspect and go from there.

I feel like pro-inspect people are not willing to make any negotiations.

I don’t know if you’ve read any of this thread, but it is 14 pages of negotiations (maybe 12 of debate and 2 of name calling). If the word you looking for is “concessions,” then, yes, those have been made, too.

I could look through, but I won’t for I really just don’t have the time. With that said, I have not seen (though I very well may have missed it) any pro-inspect player saying that they are alright with an inspect feature that has the option to disable, nor have I seen many pro-inspect players saying that they would also be alright with an easier way to ping gear and builds. If I have missed that, then I apologize. Where do you stand on those types of negotiations?

And as for your first comment about searching through Dulfy, you may have missed a point that I (and many many others) have made: A cosmetic-only inspect. I don’t think many, if any, people have a problem with this. It’s the pro-inspect players who want to inspect stats that the problem starts to come in hand.

Flesh Golem

Mimir.4690

Keeping him alive in PvE when its only you and him is hard, because he’ll probably take all the aggro. If you don’t want to run more minions, then just realize he’s going to die a lot (the other elites are pretty meh in levelling anyway).

I keep him alive (realize this is PvP) with Well of Blood and Mark of Evasion, with high healing power (heals him for 5.6k and 1.4-1.6k). If you are running staff, permanent regen is pretty easy and nice.

This is very true. I had selected the Flesh Golem early on in my leveling in PvE because I had hoped he could help carry me through. Well, that’s not true, because he does aggro everything and generally dies pretty quickly (even in the mid-lower level zones).

That said, Lich form works really well at high-level PvE zones for me. Flesh Golem serves a purpose. If you are going to go for a minion build, then the Flesh Golem can really win out when you trait for minions. However, if you are using him as your only minion, I’d suggest getting a different elite.

Poll: Profession Over Level 40 Demographics

Mimir.4690

The original post has been updated!

All professions, except for Mesmer and Warrior, increased in percentages. Mesmer and Warrior, however, decreased. Guardian still has the highest population number and lowest percentage. Warrior, still in second place in terms of population number, is no longer the highest percentage. In fact, the smallest population (Engineer) is now the second highest in percentage. Necromancer now has the highest percentage.

Thank you for all of those who have contributed, and thank you to any who wish to continue to contribute! This is producing interesting results.

A question about racist comments

While I can see what the OP is saying, I’m not sure it’s something to really be concerned about. It’s when those words turn into actions against players, however, that I have a problem. For example, there was definite “racism”, or discrimination, against Norns and Charrs during the Mad King Tower Jumping Puzzle… But that was the fault of players, not ANet.

Why no /inspect ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mimir.4690

Ha, this is not discussion, this is just a polite argument. Seriously. 8-9 months without the need for Inspect, why ask for it now? Why not 8-9 months ago? Or in beta? Obviously no one minded, why is this even an issue. As long as people are divided, this idea is going no where. In my opinion, however the cons of this feature far outweigh any “Pros” for it to be of any use to the game.

PROS:
1 Can be selective in grouping for those who wish to be selective
2 Assist with helping guildmates and friends who are new to 80
3 Determine what certain weapon or armoor skins are that you see people sporting
4 Explore different builds on other players for ideas on your own character

A simpler solution, I think to the overall /inspect argument, would be to either have /inspect added with the additional option to disable it (as I would), have /inspect only for cosmetic purposes, or implement an easier way to ping all gear into the chat. With that said…

1. Players who choose to be selective could simply ask all members to ping their gear or else be kicked.

2. Ask the newbie to ping their gear.

3. Use the cosmetic-only /inspect.

4. Google search the dozens of different builds (including gear) that are available online or whisper the player to ping their gear in response. If they don’t respond, move on and use the internet (there’s a good chance it’ll be on there).

Also, just because there are 4 pros and only 3 cons, in your opinion, does not mean that the pros outweigh the cons. The first “pro” you listed is not exclusively a pro in favor of your argument, but could just as easily be added to the pro of the other side: “Players who do not want inspect can play without inspect if they choose to.” Otherwise, there is no reason to have inspect when all of your Pros (except arguably the fourth one) can be compensated through other features that won’t produce as many cons.

Thanks alot for your response, maybe those first posts were removed by mistake as you stated, I’ll try posting a bit here in players helping players and see how it goes. I got off on the wrong foot with this forum though, that’s for sure.

Keep at it!

There are a lot of very friendly people, and it’s certainly worth a second shot.

Hey guys!

So I was just thinking about my minis, and then I started thinking about ones I would really like to have.

For one, I would love a mini dolyak.

What minis would you like to see/have?

The most tasteless mission events.

The quest that makes me feel the worst is capturing the cute baby dolyaks and killing their mothers. I hate doing that one, mostly because I want a dolyak.

I saw that you had posted a thread about constructive criticism in one of the forums, and I had read the beginning before I was distracted and left my computer… From what I read, it sounded like you were claiming to quit the game. For starters, that is actually against the forum rules (you can’t post rage/quit threads).

With that said, I have no idea if your post was constructive. Regardless, I have personally never experienced any issues with the moderators deleting my posts. The forums do, normally, take criticism well if it is constructive. So perhaps your manner of speaking is what was wrong? Without having seen the post, however, I really have no idea and I hope you have a more positive experience in the future.

WTF does RNG mean.. See it popup everywhere

RNG means “Random Number Generator”. In other words, as far as I know, each player has an RNG when it comes to drop rate (but don’t quote me on this).

Also your strawman about chat, I have a fix for that. Create a Party/Guild only chat box and bang, no more insipid and inane chatter.

it goes both ways. Only group/play with guildies, friends, peers…avoid speed runs, try not to hang out with jerks. /inspect becomes a non-issue,

Beyond that— IF someone has the audacity to criticize you gearing then—1) Take their advice!!! Maybe you don’t know everything and your experience in-game will improve with an optimal gear set. 2) Have the gorram self-confidence to stand up to them and defend your gearing decisions!! It’s your character and (hopefully) you built it that way for a reason.

Well then I will leave the argument at this:

You want this really badly because you don’t like being ignored when you whisper someone. Well grow a gorram pair of underpants shinnies and except that people will be rude and ignore you

You can’t tell me to grow underpants (which i can’t imagine is possible) and try to leave the argument at that.

The reasons for wanting /inspect go beyond having my msg requests ignored, and the reasons for not wanting /inspect are baseless and perpetuated by fear of the boogie man of MMOs…the dreaded….Elitists….

I’m not afraid of Elitists. I honestly couldn’t care less about them, nor have I even ever had bad experiences with them (was that a complete sentence?)… Rather, for me, it all comes down to the simple: I want to play my game the I way I want to play, which means people can mind their own business, trust that I can play my class, or just ask me if they are curious about my gear. :P

If you really feel that way, then i don’t understand why you would advocate against an /inspect feature. Despite the rhetoric on the forums, my experiences in at least 4 other games with /inspect features have never yielded any negative consequences as a result of the /inspect feature.

/inspect feature won’t force you to change anything about how you play the game. In fact, it might even end up improving your experience.

It may negatively impact my gaming experience if I struggle to find a group to play with because they don’t find my gear or play style up to their standards. And it doesn’t matter whether their opinion matters to you or not – if I can’t find a group (I am not committing to a Guild at the moment) to do a dungeon with, then that aspect of the game, something I want to play, is not currently available or becomes more difficult to achieve. For new players, this could absolutely ruin their gaming experience if they are unlucky enough to only run into these kinds of players.

Others should be able to play how they want. If they want an inspect, then I say have it. But let me disable it. Circles, circles. :P

So you want to play whatever way you want. But other people can’t play whatever way they want which is not to play with people with subpar gear. I get it.

I’m not sure where in my post I said anything about players having to play with others who have what you consider to be sub-par gear? I said if they want an inspect feature, I certainly will not say no to it… Rather that I want an option to disable it for me, and others, who don’t want it while those who do can keep it. If someone won’t tell you what they’re gear is, what’s stopping you from just not playing with them? You have the choice to kick someone out of their party just like I have the choice to not share my gear details with you.

I didn’t read everyone of your post. So basically you want gear inspect but make it an optional feature so it can be enable/disable. I just jump in on the discussion without reading through all those pages. Sorry.

That’s alright, I didn’t read through all of the pages either. It’s too much!

Dungeons dont require tactics

I, like you, hate the Holy Trinity… However, I find that the problem isn’t really that these roles haven’t been defined but a lack of class balance so that each class can, effectively, take on any of these roles so that they can, if necessary, be coordinated when forming a group for a dungeon. It may have been ANet’s intention, but I thought they were hoping to step away from tank, DPS, and healing classes (however, some are better than others, at this time, for each).

The few times I have done dungeons, however, we have actually been pretty coordinated and tactical. I took my Guardian and I was chosen, in the CM dungeon, to be the “tank” who protects what’s-his-face as the enemies mob in to attack.

Smarter enemies would be great!
