[Survey] Thoughts on farming in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrWubzy.3587

MrWubzy.3587

Lots of good thoughts on the subject, thank you guys for sharing! I’ll try to reply as best I can.

@pdavis: I agree that farmers are underrated in not just GW2 but any online game with an active economy. The RNG is a pain to deal with (especially when DR kicks in) and it discourages active farming for long periods of time, which draw people to the TP (which is what ArenaNet wants, I think). They’re a critical component to driving the markets of any item along with TP flippers and general customers, and should be given the correct tools and nudges to do so.

@suffish: I agree that it does not hurt the game in any way when people farm. I also agree that non-exploitative farms should be left alone.

@Vayne: The bad rap is becoming increasingly apparent with the rise of the Maize Balm threads cropping up, and it’s easy to see why when you hear of the hate spewed in both directions. I can attest to what you said about most farmers (in fact this pertains to most players I’ve met) about how they’re usually nice and cooperative, too, which makes those threads a bit hard to believe without proper evidence.

Also on your point enjoying farming, I’m the same way. There are times when I farm if I’m in the mood, and I usually just accrue items and gold as I play and spend it on whatever looks nice.

@CoRtex: I never got into farming in GW1 when I was playing (I only own Factions) so I can’t really relate, but I have a general idea from both your and Sinbold’s posts.

Suggestion: Guild Bank Password

Maybe it could work similarly to the way the bank pin works in Runescape? A four digit code you only have to enter once per login to access your banks? I can totally see it working. You also have to click the numbers as they appear in a random order, so keyloggers can’t catch it.

I know this is just me being overly nit picky but I’m not a huge fan of the whole necromancer/harvesting the dead/soul theme if that makes any sense. I might take another look at Mesmer like you mentioned. I didn’t really understand what they were when I read the description. I’ll give it an attempt.

Mesmers are pretty tricky to understand, but that’s their gimmick – their tricks. They excel at deception using mirror images of themselves to either distract enemies or attack them directly. They can also make their mirror images explode for massive damage, and can also use portals to help fellow players get to where they need to go. They’re also pretty darn good at reflecting projectiles and boon stripping (getting rid of buffs on enemies).

Honestly Dagger/Dagger necromancer seems more up your alley for that, BBQ. They still have bit of a base in ranged combat but they’re mostly in-your-face with their debuffs and attacks, with lots of evading and positioning. I would also suggest trying Sword/Pistol Mesmer for that type of play, too.

EDIT: Also a Venom Share Thief may work well for you, but you’d have to level a thief up a bit to be able to use the build. http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Thief_-_VenomShare

I had such an issue earlier today, but after a while it calmed down. In fact, the entirety of my internet shut off for a good four hours.

My guess is that many of you must have had ISPs based in the central US area or around that, as storms rolled through that area that knocked out a lot of power and gave interference to a bunch of internet providers.

I suppose reverse was a poor choice of word. I meant purchasing or crafting like you mentioned although I do remember never touching the professions at all when I used to play. Looking at my actual bank it has a ton of these transmutation stones/crystals, experience and skill point scrolls, crystal/onyx/destroyer/ fragments, a bunch of sigils and marks that I don’t understand, mystic coins, gold doubloon, a couple blueprints and my character inventory looks the same. The boxes are these black lion chests.

I’m scared to equip any of these sigils because I don’t really know what looks good. I am unsure of what my character is supposed to do. I originally though I was going to do the whole tanking thing but thats not the case as I found out.

Guahhh this whole process has got me flustered

Transmutation Stones have been since changed into Transmutation Charges, and they are used to apply skins to equipped armor and weapons. You can safely consume these without any repercussion, as they are stored in an account-wide bank.

The Experience and Skill Point scrolls are entirely up to you, though if you plan to main a single character, use them on your main.

The fragments you mentioned can now be stored in the Crafting Vault, so take those out into your bags and Deposit Material on those to save space. The same goes for Mystic Coins.

Gold Doubloons, I would say to sell on the Trading Post, but that’s really up to you if you wish to use them for crafting. Here’s a quick list of what Gold Doubloons are required to craft: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gold_Doubloon

Blueprints are used exclusively in World vs World to create siege weapons to fight against the enemy. If you never or rarely play World vs. World you can sell/discard these, but if you DO play WvW it’s recommended to save these for use.

As for the Black Lion Chests, save these or sell them. They can be opened by a Black Lion Key which can either be bought with Gems, or gotten from a reward chest from various activities: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Black_Lion_Chest_Key

On the whole I suggest starting a new character while keeping your old one(s). This will give you a fresh take on all of the changes and, when you get used to them, you can go back to your old ones and continue as you did before.

You don’t reverse anything. If you wish to change your armor’s stats you’ll have to purchase or craft a new set. And by crafting materials filling your bank, I do hope you’re referring to the crafting item bank, and not your actual bank.

It seems you’re a little lost on a goal to play, and that’s fine. And it’s also fine that you’re unsure of what to hold on to and what to get rid of. If any of those runes and sigils look good to you, attach them to a weapon or piece of armor to get their desired effects. Otherwise, sell them on the Trading Post or to a merchant NPC.

Map Fragments can be ignored, but the journey to find the treasure is quite fun and rewarding if you’re big on adventuring.

I’m unsure of what boxes you’re referring to, what are they called, and what rarity are they?

[Survey] Thoughts on farming in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrWubzy.3587

MrWubzy.3587

It’s hard for me to answer the survey, because I don’t farm, but I do farm incidentally. I do most of my farming while doing other stuff that’s more important than the farming, so I’m not sure how to answer the question.

I’m running through a zone and I notice trees which might give me a foxfire cluster. If I’m not too rushed, I chop them down. I’m not out there TO get foxfire clusters, but I wouldn’t turn away from one if it were handed to me.

The only time I’ll farm is if the guild has some event that is like a farm, like a chest run in SW. Not even sure that’s farming, in the traditional sense.

You can consider anything you do repeatedly for desired items farming if you wish. Honestly the term is far too broad and vague and has no concrete definition.

I see you’re pretty much where I am on the farming spectrum, as I do the same things. One of the reasons why I allowed such elaborations in the survey’s text boxes was because of answers that would be given by you and I. It’s not the best way of collecting responses, but it’s certainly working well enough (I hope).

Look at your Personal Story journal.

No, seriously, see what chapter you left off on in your PS or the Living Story. It’s a great place to pick up where you left off. Either that or your “Nearly Completed” achievements section, both will give you a general idea of what you were doing when you quit playing.

As Celtic Lady said, it’s also very important to make yourself a goal when playing. Look up skins, find one you like; maybe you want to explore Fireheart Rise a bit; you want to kill Tequatl for the first time, stuff like that. Make goals, or you’ll find a lack thereof once you’re done with the story.

Do you have solutions for fixing it

OP, you are obviously slanted in your point of view from the start. By even sugesting there needs to be “solutions” and “fixing” you are deeming it broken. So how about this, you play the game as you want and we’ll play the game as we want. That’s what need’s “fixing” around here.

Did you not read the entirety of my post? This is pure discussion and opinion sharing on farming in the game. I only ask the above quote for those who wish to share that part of their thoughts. Please do not attack me as you have, I have in no way deemed it broken.

Thank you for the correction, regardless. I will edit the OP accordingly.

MrWubzy.3587

I’m not saying they won’t become more useful, I’m just saying I cannot foresee any future in which I don’t generate all three of them passively at an incredible rate. Ascended gear seems to be the upper limit on the amount of dusts required – which means ill auto-generate any such sum over 3 days of play.

It’s just an oversight on ArenaNet’s part regarding those specific materials. To me, their thought process was that since the Ascended items took so many of these to craft, that everything a player does should hand them out, thus resulting in Ascended crafting being a bit easier. The way it turned out in the end, though, is situations like the OP has.

If you ask me they should lower the drop rates of those three specific materials a bit so they don’t get in people’s ways.

[Survey] Thoughts on farming in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrWubzy.3587

MrWubzy.3587

GW1 was my first MMO. We could farm for stuff there because we knew who dropped what. Here in GW2, there aren’t specific monsters that drop specific skins, so we really can’t farm for an item. It seems Anet would like everyone to farm for gold and buy what they want from the TP. Part of the problem with that is when we get the gold to buy what we wanted to farm for in the first place, there’s not the level of satisfaction that would have come from getting that item from a kill.

Let me make a comparison- You enter a competition and pay an entry fee. Every other competition you’ve participated in also had an entry fee, and in those competitions the top 3 finishers won gold, silver, and bronze medals. After a long day of hard competition, you come out on top of everyone else and look forward to the competition organizer hanging that gold medal around your neck. However, when the time comes and you’re standing on the podium, the event organizer approaches you and hands you a portion of your entry fee back and smiles big as he says, “Congratulations! Here’s a few bucks to go out and buy yourself something nice to commemorate your victory!” You worked hard to earn a gold medal, as that’s what you expected. Whatever you purchase, it will not have the same impact that the gold medal would have had.

That’s what “farming” in GW2 is to me.

I apologize if this isn’t what you were saying, but what I took away from that is farming in Guild Wars 2 is equatable to getting back half of what you put into the farm. Is this right?

Banhammer Time: Macro Thieves and Eles

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrWubzy.3587

MrWubzy.3587

So ANET not only allows, but apparently endorses macros to some extent.

The wiki is written by the players. The page only showed that ArenaNet supports the LCD. The rest is describing what the device is.

Simple macros are allowed, complex macros are not. The general rule is 1 action per key press. There used to be a topic about it, but it was deleted during the restructure.

If it’s obvious macroing then it’d be easily detected and dealt with by a GM on-hand without a report, too.

Obvious macroing is easily detectable. Simply using a macro however cannot be detected. Through analysis, they can make assumptions, but they can’t prove it without a doubt as long as what you’re doing is humanly possible.

That’s true, though I do wish there was a way to tell using GM/dev tools to make their jobs easier. Wishing for the stars, one would say.

I’m proud of my guardian, Biyx. I’ve been roleplaying with her for almost a year now (since I made her, pretty much!) and she’s grown as a character so much that it’s almost like she’s alive. It’s something I’ve never been able to do with any character I’ve made, and I always get a big smile when I log in as her.

In terms of items or meta achievements, I was pretty proud of getting Been there. Done that. a while ago. Took me quite some time getting it (before the removal of WvW from map completion). As for items, my Book of Secrets is my proudest one thus far. My first ascended item I’ve ever made!

GW2 leveling is way too fast.

MrWubzy.3587

I think the leveling is just right in GW2. It’s not too slow, not too fast, and there’s always stuff to do at each level to keep you entertained. If you ask me I think you’ve gotten your money’s worth already OP, putting in around 60-80 hours to level 60 is pretty kitten good value for your dollar. That’s not even counting the various other activities you can try, like PvP, WvW, mini-games, Silverwastes, Fractals, Dungeons, etc.

Surely you jest Cyninja? 2minutes to hit max level oO?

That’s a very, very exaggerated time frame if you’re just starting out, don’t worry. Cyninja is most likely referring to Tomes of Knowledge (items won in PvP or gotten from rewards that level a character up by one level) or crafting (which requires a lot of gold to do). It should take, on average, around 40-50 hours of gameplay to reach max level if you start out exploring the world and doing your Personal Story. And that’s all depending on how hardcore you are about your leveling process.

Trick or Treat Trolling

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrWubzy.3587

MrWubzy.3587

Killing the ambients around Maize Balm farmers isn’t always deliberate trolling. Sometimes they’re required for a nearby heart or event, and sometimes people are going for the Ambient Slayer achievement as they explore, and may not even realize Maize Balm farming is a thing. Ask before you rage, it’ll save you a lot of time, energy and, most of all, a report.

I’m not saying that trolling is a good thing; it should be ignored/stamped out as quickly and as quietly as possible. Also, if you are the ones Maize Balm farming, keep your emotions in check as you do so. If a griefer arrives to mess up the farm, quietly report them and block them, and ask them politely to leave.

Idea: free trial(Time limit)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrWubzy.3587

MrWubzy.3587

Ordinarily, yes I would say that MMORPGs most definitely should offer some kind of free trial or demo. Especially games where you still have to pay full price at retail, plus monthly subscriptions thereafter. I’m not usually willing to risk that amount of money on a game I may not really enjoy in the long term, especially since if I don’t stay subbed I basically don’t have a game anymore.

But in GW2’s case, there is no sub fee, and on several occasions the price has gone down as low as $10. And once you have it, you have it forever, to play on your own time and your own pace. I don’t really consider that any real risk, and even if you don’t stick with it for a long time it has got to be worth at least ten bucks.

That’s a good point, but customers still deserve to try before they buy. It’s one of the many reasons why Let’s Plays exist, so people can check the game out before they buy it to see if it’s worth their time and money. On that note, always look up gameplay videos of games without demos before you buy (reviews from trusted sources, too).

I wouldn’t be opposed to a timed trial sort of thing as long as it takes place on a specific server separate from the megaserver and paid servers. Many things would have to happen to make it viable, such as turning off mail privileges, turning off chat entirely, and restricting access to only a few levels/maps so that gold sellers wouldn’t get a chance to scam any people trying the game.

Two things:

  1. I checked the check boxes and typed in the typing boxes. When I finished I clicked the Next button at the bottom. I got the same 7 questions, with * by them. What I would have expected from seeing “Next” was a second page. For a 1 page survey, I’d expect a “Submit” button. Also, I am unsure whether I did something wrong, and if so, what — or whether my responses saved.
  2. In question 7, you’re asking for what amounts to an analytical position on farming (is it good or bad for the economy). Indifferent as the neutral choice is inappropriate, as it is used to denote how one feels. A better choice might have been, "It affects the economy both positively and negatively.

Noted, I’ll see what I can do to fix the issue and change the answers. Thanks!

EDIT: The first thing you mentioned was most likely a bug on your part. I went through and checked, there’s only two pages on the survey: the initial questions and end page with the image.

Farming in the same way grinding is a very vague and subjective term. For better results a clearer example of farming would be best.

That’s the thing, though. The two terms (at least when defined by most websites) are very closely related, so it’s difficult. I’ll do my best to simplify it in the OP.

Just to be clear: This survey is about farming for ITEMS, CURRENCY, SKINS, etc. Things that are either optional or semi-optional, that aren’t required to progress in the game’s story/levels/ranks.

Here’s the survey!

Survey will stop collecting answers on May 31st, 2015 @ 12:00 PM (Time Zone: GMT-0500 (Central Standard Time)).

What are your thoughts on farming for those who don’t want to take the survey? Does it affect the game/economy/playerbase in a good or bad way? Do you think ArenaNet should take action against farming or let it be? Discuss!

Thanks to BrooksP for the suggestion on clarifying what the survey is about!
Thanks to IndigoSundown for the correction on question 7!
Thanks to DeWolfe for the correction on the thread’s direction!

Just a heads up – the heart you’re mentioning has crows, not ravens. And the crows give little progress to the heart’s completion. The rats, which have green names and are thus not affected by the Maize Balm, are required as well. Heck, the rats can’t even be killed by weapons, you have to press F to ‘Exterminate’ them. Maize Balm doesn’t affect green named friendlies (source: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Throw_Maize_Balm), so it’s in your best interest to avoid the crows and go after the rats instead to avoid knocking heads.

OT: It’s wrong in any part of the game to whisper things like the OP mentioned to anybody for any reason. Screenshot the offense, block the person/people and report them accordingly. Be aware, though, that falsely reporting people or misusing the report function will cause your account to be actioned instead.

Yeah, I know it’s pretty darn old. It’s all we have at this point, and saving for a new PC is going slow due to billing and all. I’m not familiar with overclocking (my CCC comes with Overdrive) and I’m afraid I might mess something up if I tried. Are there any repercussions?

No, what they decided is that they have a series of things they want to get taken care of before SAB. Previous to initiating the expansion they could have put the SAB team on SAB. Instead they probably have the SAB team start the work on the expansion. As the living world teams completed their work on their specific updates they each got transitioned to the expansion work. The only team left is the one that is working on re-rearranging the personal story and redesigning the trait system. Once that feature patch is completed it’s unclear what those guys will be set to do, but I guarantee it’s not going to be SAB.

It isn’t a matter of saying, ok, we’re not doing SAB anymore. They’ve prioritized the expansion above everything else and are using all of their assets on that goal. Once it’s ready they can reorganize their people into a position that would allow for SAB, it just hasn’t happened yet, and won’t happen for a while.

aint no probably about it. josh foreman was the lead designer of sab, and theres a team behind/around him of course, but idk who they are. they were wrangling with the game’s physics engine to make things work in sab, and out of that initial work came zephyr sanctum and later dry top. then he/they got busy with silverwastes and its jump puzzle(s) (i think, but by that time hed been long since shut off from us). the expansion’s maps are gonna have tons and tons of the same verticality elements of dt/sw/zephyr sanctum, so it seems clear, at least to me, whos working on that… and unfortunately they arent working on sab.

This just makes HoT sound even better, knowing that the guy who designed the SW JP is working on the new maps, too. Maybe SAB will relaunch when HoT drops? I certainly hope so.

Tl;dr at bottom, sorry!

Hi there. I’ve been playing GW2 for almost a year now (my guardian’s first birthday is only a couple months away!) and initially the performance was OK. I could play with relatively medium settings in the open world/dungeons with ease (around 30 FPS) and I got almost 60 FPS with the lowest settings. However, after the NPE I began to get lower FPS gradually over time, up until now, where it’s at its worst.

It’s also strange, too, that, at certain times (regardless of the map) I can get around the same FPS using all medium settings (minus FXAA, shadows on Low) as I would with everything on super low. It boggles my mind, and I’ve been searching for clues and fixes to these very problems since September. I’m breaking down and posting it here, in hopes of an experienced computer tech or a dev to respond with some insight.

I know the game is constantly updating, and that updates sometimes come with graphical overhauls, performance fixes, etc., but…I don’t know. It bothers me that I can still run WoW on almost max after all of its upgrades, but this game still tanks at times. I’m no graphics hog, believe me, it’s the FPS I’m concerned with.

Specs:
Processor: AMD A6-3400M APU w/ Radeon HD Graphics (4 CPUs), ~1.4GHz
Memory: 6144 MB RAM
DirectX 11

AMD Radeon HD 6520G (3046 MB total memory)
32 bit, 60Hz monitor
Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC (I know, sorry, I’m saving up for a new PC)

Tl;dr FPS drops after each new patch, wondering what the heck is going on. Hoping for dev post, or an experienced computer tech/builder/seasoned PC user.

QUICK EDIT: I perform virus and malware scans using Malwarebytes and AVG every two weeks, and perform a defrag on my machine at least every four-six months. The fan did crap a while back, but it’s since been fixed. No overheating while playing any game, and it’s always plugged in when I game (unplugged when writing or casual browsing). Battery is fine, but is going slowly (looking to replace at the end of summer).

Guardian IMO

MrWubzy.3587

I agree with Thaddeus. My guardian’s strength is active defense (blinds, Aegis, Protection, Reflects, etc.). While my DPS is slightly lower than other classes, I can still dish out just as much as I can take. I think you may just be looking at the class wrong, and a re-thinking of its mechanics would be in order.

Semantics: Change Retreat! to Charge!

in Guardian

Posted by: MrWubzy.3587

MrWubzy.3587

Or “Take Cover!” , “I’ll Cover You!” … along those lines.

But a cowardly “Retreat”…? That’s the last thing I would imagine a courageous, honorable knight of faith and virtues in brilliant heavy armor would ever utter in battle, or anywhere else.

My guardian will NEVER retreat! >:E

I’d rather live to fight another day while protecting my teammates rather than stand and fight, only to die soon after (this is assuming the situation means certain/high probability of death). After all, I am “Guarding” them.

OP: I could see a name change being effective. Something like Virtue’s Rush, “Fly!” (easy mode reference for Anet to make regarding LotR), or something similar. Though I do use the shout for its intended purpose most times, I’m more often using it to just run around the map or to get to battles faster.

DH trait line - lacking support for melee

in Guardian

-snipped for length-

I totally agree. I’ve been forming rotations in my head just based on what was shown to me, and I’m already coming up with some pretty kick kitten combos. I’m expecting my melee DPS/Support to drop a bit (because Longbow, traps), and I’m more than compensating for that with a couple of builds I have in mind.

Dragonhunter really is a great Guardian alternative for those who found the original class a bit lackluster. It’s a lot more reactive and requires a bit more planning (at least when considering my play style).

why everyone getting 25% speed...

in Guardian

Posted by: MrWubzy.3587

MrWubzy.3587

I’m personally fine with my options in terms of movement speed. I mostly play PvE so it’s a non-issue for me, but when I do step into WvWvW on the occasion that arises, it never really occurred to me that I was any slower than my teammates. In fact I was often towards the middle of the pack once we reached objectives.

That aside, yes, it would be nice to have a flat 25% boost in some form. But I honestly never really notice it, and I side-main a Thief with the signet constantly on. In fact, I’m slightly faster than my Thief in certain situations (rugged terrain, vertical obstacles).

Also, can’t wait for Dragon Hunter. I’m immediately speccing for it once I get the chance to. A useful ranged weapon? Hell yeah!

As flesh wound said, check every setting you have. If you’re running using a USB keyboard check to see if anything is bugging out or assigned to different functions. I’ve found that, sometimes, I’ll assign a key on my keyboard for a certain task when I work, and I forget at times that it’s still assigned to that when I log in.

I just logged in on my asura guardian and received two daily Login Reward chests at the same exact time. I was able to open both and get the rewards from both, and I was informed by a guild mate that reset happened an hour before I decided to log in. Is this a bug or what?

If you won a million dollars

I’d get the best possible gaming laptop for my wife, and then the best possible gaming PC for me. Then I’d get our truck’s insurance set up for at least five years, pay our rent five years in advance, fix the stupid truck bed, and finally invest in a couple of things using around 200,000. I’d give around 100,000 to my mom and dad to help them with house repairs, and 50,000 to my grandmother to help with her medical expenses.

The rest goes to charity.
