Mastery System

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I agree the mastery panel wasn’t very intuitive, at least not to me. I confess it took me a while to see you could scroll down and find Gliding and that Mushroom thingy. I had gained a lot of exp on a empty track by then (giving just basic mastery Points?).

Anyway, I had 3 mastery Points, (2 from story and 1 from tendril adventure) that I put into gliding. I liked the gliding a lot even though there wasn’t much I could explore in this small demo.

Then I decided to try the mushrooms. I got some exp and then managed to fly to a mastery Point. That mastery Point I wasn’t able to add anywhere. I thought it would be possible to add it but I couldn’t use the + signs as I had earlier on the glider. I am not sure if it was intentional or maybe because I had started to earn experience in both the glider and mushroom tracks? I found no other open track to try on so I can’t tell.

Anyway, Masteries could probably be better explained or get a clearer interface.

Otherwise I had a lot of fun. I didn’t find any problems that I would expect during a stress test.

I look forward to explore HoT!

In the news about this upcomming closed beta test it was stated you needed to be active, loyal, and sign up for the newsletter.

My guess is that Anet kept it very simple and just had a random draw among those that fit there.

“Active and loyal” could mean something as simple as having an account with at least 100 hours of game play and having logged in at least 5 times last month… (Why they need to make it harder?)

I also believe that at least 70 % of those complaining about not being chosen didn’t sign up for the newsletter in the first place…

AFKers The Plague

Nick.7259

As I see it the problem isn’t really people being AFK, although a map getting full but with low activity can be annoying.

The real problem is that Anet is so forgiving when counting towards those that go AFK. Being AFK should significally reduce the reward you get/can get from an event.

There are so many events in the game where you can be very lazy and still get the full reward, like the Vinewrath, Shadow Behe and other World bosses etc.

Always amaze me how accurate people can be with this kind of stuff – “I wasted 7800 g in mf trying to get a precursor” etc.

I for one like statistics and do record some of my actions, although not Teq and/or Wurm kills…

I recognize human errors but I have put 4 rares into the forge 1346 times and have gotten 2 pre-cursors from it (and 262 other exotics). I have not translated that into gold but I would probably have been able to sell the rares and buy the precursor I wanted instead if it comes to gold – I do like a lottery even when it’s more fun if I am on the winning side.

Sure, you can’t map WvW as easily as the other PvE maps but it’s not like it’s impossible, even when you are on a “bad” server.

However, you have to realise that it’s going to take time and that you might have to try more than once to grab a skill point.

I used to be on a lower tier server when I did most of my mapping. I just made sure to check the WvW maps often and on the rare occasions that we actually controlled Stonemist Castle I dropped what I was doing and ran there with the character I wanted to map.

Also, I only mapped the areas easily accessible by my color so I waited until we had the right color Before doing any fancy mapping.

Even so, it’s a war… even now when I am on a top tier server we do get invaded by those pesky enemies every now and then. We do lose Garrison in home border and we do lose “our” keep in EB.

WvW isn’t “free map” like the rest of the game – but it’s hardly impossible to map…

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nick.7259

Nick.7259

I still think Anet made a misstake and underestimated what would happen to the demand for silk. When Ascended armor came they saw that there were an enormous supply of silk and my guess is that they wanted silk to be something valued higher than the 13 coppers they used to cost.

So Anet changed the Bolt Recipe to take 3 scraps instead of 2, and instead of going with 50 refined items as in the other recipes they decided to go for 100.

Now, I Believe they are kinda stuck in this. There is no easy way to change it without shocking the market even more. I have no numbers on how much cloth was added with the Wintersday events but the effect wasn’t lasting much, guess we players made too many extra armor sets :-)

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nick.7259

Nick.7259

I read John Smith write in another thread that he liked to compare outcome with predictions – and I can’t help but wonder if silk behaved the way predicted (when ascended armor came out).

I was shocked myself when I did the math and realized the, at least to me, enormous amount of silk scrap needed to make ascended armor sets.

Not only did than change the recipe for silk bolts from 2 scraps to 3 scraps, they also made Bolt of Damask break pattern and use 100 silk bolts. And then the Bolts of Damask are used heavily for every armor type. After all, even leather and heavy armor takes more Bolts of Damask than the metal or leather corresponding parts…

I guess that the prices we players are willing to pay on the trade post isn’t really a target for Anet but to me it seems that those Changes in recipes put a little too much preassure on silk scraps. That sudden supply-shock introduced by Anet during Wintersday does indicate, at least to me, some do agree we need a higher supply in-game.

Will Bolts of Damask ever drop in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Nick.7259

Personally I never understood why Anet made Damask take 300 silk scraps from the start when the other corresponding materials where at 100 mithril ore, 150 elder logs or 150 thick leather sections.
…..

My guess is that Silk was WAY WAY WAY undervalued and over supplied when Ascended Armor was designed (less so when it actually released and players had been hoarding and buying it up for weeks). The prices shot up and have been relatively stable (with small spikes and rebounds when items requiring Demask were released). I guess that is where they want the prices (despite the “fairness” of requiring many times more raw materials than the other 2 armor sets).

True, there were over 2 million silk scraps available on the market and the TP price where around 12-13 copper when ascended armor was released. I myself I had bought enough silk to make the armor I planned to and luckily enuogh had converted them to bolts because of the space they took in storage. Hoever I calculated 50 silk bolts as the other recipes.

Not only did Anet change the recipe to 100 silk bolt, they also changed the silk bolt it self requiring 3 scraps instead of earlier 2 scraps. Since even the leather/metal armor requires 25 damask it stood clear than 2 million scraps in the market would not be enough for the comming demand. An armor set requiring at least 7 500 scraps. 2 million scraps would just be like 250 sets of ascended armor.

When I did this math I used all my money to buy as much silk as I could. Price raised from those 12-13 copper a piece to over a silver in a week and has just been climbing after that. The only dip we had was when Anet raised the supply during Wintersday but now silk is climbing again…

Personally I never understood why Anet made Damask take 300 silk scraps from the start when the other corresponding materials where at 100 mithril ore, 150 elder logs or 150 thick leather sections. Then consider how much Damask is actually needed for an armor set (thanks to the insignias) it was painfully clear that what at release of ascended armor looked like a flooded silk market, would go totally ballistic.

We did have a shock to the supply of cloth during this Wintersday but it was just a temporary thing. So prices will most likely rise again, unless there is a more permanent change in supply of cloth, or the recipes changed.

I don’t really understand why Anet “balanced” it this way to start with, or why they decided to throw in a shock after 1 year of existance. Who knows what they will bring tomorrow. Maybe we will see an overhaul at a future feature pack or when the expansion comes, maybe not.

My guess is that the cloth scraps will continue to rise in price for a while now pushing the price of damask up.

/Age and precursor drop

Relevance between /age and precursors gotten?

I have 4467 hours and 0 precursors from normal gameplay. To me that’s the only relevant comparison with /age.

Then I have 1 precursor from the final reward chest when Southsun Cove was introduced in the game. That was a one time special event that had an extremely high chance for precursors (compared to any other way of getting one). I don’t ount that as a drop from gameplay.

Then I have 4 precursors from the Forge (putting the drops of rares/exotics I get into the Forge – never buying anything to put there). The number of precursor you get from the Forge is not relevant to /age – it’s more relevant to how many times you try the Forge… For me it has been 1,0 % precursors from Exotic attempts and 0,16 % precursors from Rare attempts.

Lucky Envelopes + MF: All or only "account"?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Nick.7259

Before Silverwastes MF was pretty much one thing even though it had a lot of different sources.

Then with Silverwastes we got new Magic find mechanics with the Perserverance building up when doing events and giving “Bonus magic find” when opening lost bandit chests. Now we get this talk about “account magic find”. The new food is giving Magic find buffs during the Lunar event.

I don’t really like the way this is going. To me it’s not really clear how all these mechanics work and there has been a lot of different theories going about in my guild. I do hope it won’t get more messy than it already is.

I guess the MF affecting the letters is the account based MF. That means the MF we get from Luck and from Achievements.

If it would be the character based luck then we should max perserverance, kill vinewrath, grab MF banner and Guild buff, take MF booster, laurel MF booster and celebration boster, add utility infusion and food/utility buffs before opening letters? Sure, it could be that way, but I doubt it…

“The rewards in these envelopes are affected by account magic find.”
- Are they not affected by other sources of magic find like boosters, and infusions?

Boosters add to your accound magic find. They are not seperate.

Actually only magic find from Luck and Achievement rewards are account bonuses.

The rest of the magic find comes from personal sources, zone-specific or time-specific sources.

Now, I haven’t seen any official definition of what Anet means when they write “account magic find”.

My guess would be that it only is the luck and acheivement magic find they mean.

Carapace Coat Box: Feedback & Suggestions [merged]

11 kills and no coat box so far (apart from the achievement one of course). It feels like I have been given a No_Luck flag by Anet. (Even though I know people have done far more than 11 kills without any boxes – hope I will get two in the next two rounds.)

I really don’t like these “hit-or-miss” things (similar to the pre-cursor drop rates… 4 297 game hours and still not a single pre-cursor as drop, just from Forge, and even so almost a year ago since last and putting every rare/exotic weapon I get into the forge).

IF there is a goal from Anets side like “we want an average of 2k game hours for a precursor or average 20 vine-kills for a coat box” it would be much more appealing, imho, to have tokens or small parts that we collect for it instead of these big either hit or miss.

I have friends who got their three coats in just a few kills – so if I take a 100 kills to get mine the average is at goal – so Everything is fine? I have friends putting 4 rare swords into the forge getting the pre-cursor at second try while other put several thousands in without getting nothing, but the average is good so Everything is fine?

Sure, that’s how random work but to me, that is not fun, nor good design (well, the lucky people have fun at least….)

Silverwastes and Magic Find - rules changed?

in Living World

Posted by: Nick.7259

Nick.7259

Hi!

Early in the GW2 history devs stated Magic Find only worked when mobs dropped loot. Bonus chests, World chests, loot bags (except the WvW loot bags dropped on ground for us) and champion boxes weren’t affected.

But has that change?

The reason I ask is Preserverance and discussions in my Guild where the Guild leader tells everyone to save all bags and boxes from Fractals etc, then go to Silverwastes and get 5 in Preserverance, use Magic find boosters and all and then open the bags.

I tried to argue against it giving the sources found on the wiki but was basically called an idiot.

Now Anet does change things as time goes by so I might have missed an update or missunderstood something but this feels wrong. Would be a really curious design if it was intended that way. Then again, the Preserverance working on Lost Bandit Chests already is a new and curious design?

And it feels strange that almost no monster drop loot but instead Bags of Gear. Following what was said in early GW2 days Magic Find probably isn’t affecting Bags of Gear – but that also feels a Little strange since that’s the main way we get loot from monsters?

So in all – I feel confused. Can anyone set me straight? (And I would love a source for it too if possible.)

Issue with zerg shoveling

in Living World

Posted by: Nick.7259

Nick.7259

The Big Dig is way too good a farm now. It’s easy to get over 100 champion bags / hour, way higher if it’s a really organized farm.

What surprised me from the start in Silverwastes was that you get almost as many crests back as the key cost in the first place. Now with the large digging-zerg we get an almost endless loop. I think it’s good that you can have a shovelling zerg like this – just that the loot we get is way too good.

In my opinion reducing the droprates from the chest would be best “fix”. Maybe lower to something like 10-20 % chance to get that champion bag, as well as less ascended materials.

When Dry Top came the merchants there and the chests got new items with each Living story chapter. I would assume we will get new stuff to buy for our crests in the future updates?

Now lastly I put 4 lvl 80 exotic rifles in the Forge and got a lvl 75 exotic rifle back?

The only explanation I myself can come up with is that I have been using dungeon tokens and gotten some dungeon exotics that I have put into the forge. Perhaps the forge doesn’t recognize those as level 80 even though they are?

Solution to fix the population imbalance

in WvW

Posted by: Nick.7259

Nick.7259

I don’t really have a population or scoring solution but I want to point out that many of the mechanics in WvW and GW2 are working towards clustering of player on one “winning” server.

EotM lessened the strongest reason to join a lesser populated server.

(Then that EotM are more rewarding that normal WvW is a bad joke.)

Leagues and seasons in WvW is fun but suddenly the winning server got better personal loot for their members (just not show off items) and thus raising the temptation to switch server.

Now we have Megaservers so serverloyalty doesn’t exist anywhere else than in WvW.

I used to be on a mid populated server and see myself as a casual WvWer. I always thought it was a target rich environment and had fun even if the were having the lowest score. But with all these changes I too have moved to a WvW-winning server to get a share of the richer rewards.

About scoring and rewards I do feel there should be more rewarding for those building, sieging, repairing, defending and scouting as well as those guarding dolyaks to towers and keeps.

Sadly the biggest personal rewards is gotten from karma trains where you just hit the doors of the next Tower/keep and never defend anything hoping the other teams caps at the same pace you do. Or join those similar trains in EotM. It really shouldn’t be that way.

I am for loyalty bonuses. I am for handicap systems. Heck – if color is given out depending on the rank of the server – why not give the lower ranked server a better starting position? Make the outmanned buff really mean something? Maybe have an outscoring buff? And make the rewards in a tournament more about my personal contribution to my server instead of me belonging to the “right” server (is enough if gold/silver/bronze difference is about bragging rights like finishers or something).

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nick.7259

Nick.7259

My biggest issue with the RNG of GW2 is that it’s almost win the jackpot or nothing (just to illustrate).

To me it’s a much better concept to have those Black lion ticket scraps so you work together a full ticket and feel the progress instead of having an ultrarare full ticket.

In the way the PvP-reward tracks work great. You actually work towards that dungeon armor chest instead of just having a very slim chance for it to drop. (Maybe compare to a ascended chest in Fractals – I Think the PvP version is better.)

To me it gets very boring with all the ascended rings I get from Fractals that I have no use for since i have done Fractals so much. I can’t do anything useful with them – not even salvage for a slim chance of ascended mats – and the money I get from selling them to vendor is close to a joke. It would actually be better to get a rare item instead. On the other hand the Fractal relics are great (even if they too overflood after a while).

Precursors are like the tip of the iceberg but illustrates the RNG problem very well. I have 3 750 hours of gameplay now and not gotten any precursor as a drop (but well from the Forge and the infamous early Karkaevent where it felt you rewarded all that didn’t get dc with a precursor). Sure, maybe I shouldn’t have gotten a precursor as drop in 3 750 hours anyway but it would have felt nice to work towards it instead of just having a 1 or 0, success or failure.

Luckystreaks as some have talked about can be a nice way I guess. But what is really a success from the Forge or from a Champion bag? After all, there are more interesting drops in this game than just precursors, at least to me, so who decides what Counts as a success and as a failure? Sure, you could have something like no-rare gives a temp bonus to MF – but then we will see people starting to playing that system too and I don’t think that would be good either. (Edit, yes, I know MF doesn’t affect champions chest or the Forge in the current system – just to illustrate…)

Anyway, i would love seeing solutions like better chance for a Sam / Foulbear kill without one, or maybe as a reward after killing 10k ogres. Or that Pendant of arah buyable for 5 k Arah token. Super-rare jackpots doesn’t trigger me as much as something I work towards where I feel a sence of progression.

Sorry for the long post.

Does anyone use magic find amulet infusion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nick.7259

Nick.7259

It’s very true there is no way for us to be sure how/if MF works. But it’s safe to say that rhe higher your MF is the less benefit you will get from additional +20 % MF. Also, remember MF doesn’t affect what comes out of champion chests, bonus chest or World boss chests either.

Then again, I believe it’s true you get enough karma as it is just playing the game. It sure is for me at least. Actualy it has been true for gold too. Then again I don’t enjoy farming. If you dedicate yourself to certain farms I am sure there are different optimal builds/buffs. Anyway, I have had enough karma for 4 legendaries and karma-eq when I still used exotics so karma has never been a problem for me.

When it comes to gold/exp infusion they only affect the gold/exp from kills. When I compare exp/gold I get from kills with the exp/gold I get as rewards for events and finishing dungeons the exp/gold from kills is close to nothing.

So basically, I would say the MF infusion is most useful to a new player but unless you are drowning in Laurels I am sure there many more efficient ways to use your Laurels…

That said, I myself have MF on most of my toons, Karma on one WvW toon and a WvW-infusion on the second WvW-toon.

AFKers waiting for the final shot

Just as I don’t think afk’ers should get “full” reward I actually don’t think the person arriving late to a World boss either should get “full” reward. Imho it’s a Little too easy to tag the bosses and get end-loot.

Then gain, some of the events promote afk-ing or concentrating on different objectives. After all – how many of us think that running kegs for 7 minutes at Taidha is fun? Or pew-pewing at Jormags wall getting feared/pushed all the time? Or running around killing all 13 portals at the Behe?

I like the construct at Teq where you get bonus chests for participating in the defences. Maybe there should be a bonus chest for actually killing off portals at Behe? I agree the champions at Jormags shouldn’t drop loot. Why do we need to drop so many kegs at Taidha? (Make more pirates or waves at Taidha if you (Anet) wants it to take a long time to complete instead of forcing us to run kegs for so many minutes.)

Also, maybe there needs to be more ways to measure activity in an event than just damage? People reviving, giving stability to allies or giving swiftness to the Escort we are protecting also contribute even if they don’t do much damage?

There are many aspects with Megaservers that are great but they work against the feeling of belonging to a special server and that community. Since the support for Guilds and servert and other communitybuilding events are rather weak the feeling of belonging to a server really only gets important in wvw.

Then add how the rewards for the www-series are given out. It’s a matter of belonging to the right server. And it’s a matter of that server performance, a lot more than personal performance. Basically Anet has created a system where individual players get better rewards if they heap up on a few servers.

The only real problem with huge crowds on certain servers where the queues – and to get rid of them we got EotM, so that even more people could clump up together.

From a Money Point that might be a good system for Anet. But server hopping and heaping together in large servers actually works against Community and the feeling of belonging somwhere.

I think it would be a lot better if we could have a structure that promote players to spread out evenly over the servers insted of clumping up (even though that would mean less gems spent on server-changes).

I would love more rewards based on how individual players perform in www instead of rewards being a large matter which server you belong to. We all know many players have changed to a winning server just to get better rewards at end of season 2.

Sure, gems for Anet – but is that really player migration that is benefitial to the game longterm?

At the very minimum Anet shuold have programmed some kind of indication, like a scale or something, so you could see how you progressed towards the new server. Right now there is just a yes/no answer so noone feels any progress at all.

I have more than one friend who are very frustrated now because of not getting their affiliation changed despite being on the new server for a long time and I sympathise with them.

Personally I have stuck with the same old server as always so I am just happy :-)

I miss the Festivals in GW1

Hi!

I just want to say that I miss the festivals in GW1. They were something I was looking forward to. Mostly because they had lots of drops that I found useful in the game. I was chasing cupcakes, corn, eggs etc.

Unfortuneatly I must say that the festivals in GW2 haven’t been close. I’ll give you that I often find them better as event but I really miss the actual impact the festivals in GW1 had.

I would suggest tilting the rewards a little from the mini/skins department and to give us something that most of us would see as useful and wanted for PvE. Those consumeables that used to drop were really nice. I would Think it totally OK if I couldn’t use them in PvP and/or WvW. But even consumeables giving like +35 % MF, or +10 % movement or +20 % exp – better than today – would be something to strive for and look forward to when they come back as events. Well, I don’t really know. I just remember that the festivals in GW1 actually gave me something I wanted to have for the rest of my gaming year instead of the items now that most of the time just fill up my storage, or just get deleted.

As it is now the thing that make me want to do Boss Blitz is the achievement points and nothing else. At the moment I haven’t event managed to make myself do all 10 Boss Blitz to complete that achievement but I’ll probably force myself to do 2 more.

I am happy some enjoy the festival but I bet I am not the only one feeling there isn’t that much fun and party to this festival…

GW2 Devs Have In-game Powers?

A dev kicking afk people in LA is clearly abusing his/her powers since it gives that server/overflow an unfair advantage compared to other servers/overflows.

I think the problem is that you can AFK for too long in PvE before getting kicked out. That’s more a bad design from Anet than anything else.

There are some places, like in the Sprint activity where you are kicked too quickly – stupid that you must keep moving around after having won a race just because you want daily achievement and thus must wait for slower players.)

I also think that chatting, cafting and using the trade post should count as being active, at the very minimum when you hang out in a city.

And finally, even though I frown upon afk’ers I just want to point out that a ban is far too harsh punishment for being afk. I am a single parent to two wonderful daughters aged 3 and 5. I often try to grab a couple of hours of gameplay when they have fallen asleep. They sometimes wake crying and shouting my name. I do not take the time to get out of a dungeon or log off the game – nor do I believe I will have to be afk for a long time – but if it shows that my 3 years old is sick and has vomit in the bed (yes, it has happened) I WILL spend my time with her leaving my toon afk for a long time.

There is no way you can know why someone is afk. Cutting link is fine but banning is just plain stupid.

And I repeat again. Any dev kicking an AFKer in an is abusing his/her powers – unless it’s beig done in all servers/overflows.

If the winning server gets better rewards than other servers won’t we risk massmigration towards servers that are in a winning position?

I would prefer better rewards for players who engage themselves heavily in a WWW-season, but more based on personal achievement than in the actual results of the server.

Now, bragging right thingys to the Winners are ofcourse all right.

Why must I move after finishing Sprint?

Why did you make it so I have to keep moving after finishing Southsun sprint?

Fin, I get all other achievements connected to the Sprint directly but you choosed to code it so I only get credit for the Daily activity if I stay at the Sprint waiting for all other runners to finish.

So in order to keep my from dying of distress during the 3-4 minutes you force me to wait until I get credit I talk in Guild chat or check the TP. None of those things Counts as me being Active though. So I must remember to move now and then as well when I wait just to not get kicked?

So why did you choose to code it in this unfriendly way?

In what way do you Believe the 3-4 minutes waiting is fun? (You Always claim you code this game to be fun so I assume you Think it’s fun, especiallt since you haven’t fixed this).

And why is it so darn important that I keep moving every minute while waiting?
