^— sheesh!

I wouldn’t go that far at all. I agree with the chatting thing, there should be more of. But I think there will be in time. The slow-levelers(aka the ones that stay with the game) are either not quite to Zhaitan yet, or working on alts, or PvPing. Why not give it some time before giving up on the community?

And btw, I’m not a zerger, but I’m not a title-hunter either. I do vastly enjoy this game and still will take time out to chat, give advice, go out of my way to revive, help friends in lower zones, and joke around in LA. I think you’re being premature.

I actually like the discreetness. Having titles emblazoned under names just adds clutter to an already busy screen. It would be chaotic in WvW battles.

It’s nice having titles, I see no need to advertise them though. But that’s just me.

If they did allow instance switching, it would be a nice way to look for non-bugged skill challenges and events as well.

But you know how that goes, as soon as they implemented it, people would start switching instances and farming the same crafting nodes and mobs in one area over and over.

What if they implement it for the cities only ?

Lion’s Arch has a few crafting nodes.

Cities-only district choices is a wonderful idea.

And the few nodes in LA are not simple to get to…they are at the end of a jumping puzzle, and there are like 5 nodes total. If someone is farming those they really have issues. =)

And what’s up with the pirate-themed stuff all over the place? I suppose medium armor goes with “rogue” type classes, and pirates are pretty rogue-ish.

I actually met a bot spammer/gold seller 2 weeks ago. I met him through a friend of a friend of a friend at a bar-b-que. He was this twenty-something dumpy, lazy dude who used bots to make a crapload of money on another game before being banned.

He could care less about it being wrong or even illegal. He laughed about it while stuffing his face with chicken and drinkin’ Natty Lite. I was very amused at how he fit the nerdy, white-boy, gamehacker stereotype to a T.

I wanted to backhand him. ;]

Real-life parallels indeed…

The world is bursting with similar situations: Taiwan, Istanbul, Kaliningrad, kittenstan, Basque…pretty much all of the Western Hemisphere…

England’s land-grabs read like a grocery list: India, Gibraltar, Falklands, Hong Kong, Suez, Iraq, Scotland, Northern Ireland…(tear). Some they still have.

And the granddaddy of them all: Israel. These poor peeps were denied their ancestral homeland for 2 millennia. Now that they have it back they consider it justice done. Ask a Palestinian how he/she feels about that.

The question isn’t whether or not it is practical or even fair to leave your home. The question is whether or not it is the right thing to do.

Joko(switching back to fantasy here) is a special case for one important reason: he’s undead and inherently evil. It would be different if he had died and was long gone, but his continued existence is just plain wrong…he needs to die. Really die not just undie or whatever lol. If those living under his unjust, albeit safe, rule don’t see that then they are not only fooling themselves, but are indirect collaborators of his evil reign.

Ambiguity…

Yes, it is lacking. The thing that strikes me about GW2 storyline is its overwhelming emphasis on unity and cooperation, almost to the point of zealotry. I’m not sure if this was simply gameplay spice or done intentionally as a some wierd message to the masses. It’s almost like I could lip-sync the story cinematics halfway through the personal story:

“…etc…etc…we need to unite!”
“…etc…etc…we can’t do this alone!”
“…etc…etc…we can only win if we work together!”

That may be too harsh a criticism, but there really is very little ambiguity in that. GW1 did have that for sure. I mean, I still refuse to roll a Charr because of all that time I spent in pre getting the LDoA title. It’s silly I know, but really can’t see them as anything but brutish animals. :/

As for your examples Verteiron I tend to disagree on both points. The Mursaat may have been holding back the Titans using human souls…but they still demanded from the humans what amounted to enslavement. They demanded absolute loyalty and obediance from humanity, as Saul found out way too late. The Charr may have overrun Kryta without them, but at least they would have died with honor. I would choose death over slavery any day.

As for Joko, I was not as wrapped up in the NF storyline as I was in Proph. Although living in a peace that is provided for by a decidedly evil thing doesn’t make it alright. The Elonians and Kournans who may live under his protection now are only fooling themselves. Security for security’s sake is not enough, and kidding yourself by saying that it’s better than suffering is simply another way of saying “my soul has a price, and Joko has bought it.”

Gohlar Presuming someone is a bad player because he/she doesn’t want to conform to a particular build for a dungeon run is just silly. If anything, odds are they are pretty good because they want to challenge themselves with an unknown and untested playstyle. Doing successful dungeon runs in GW1 was largely dependent on your builds. There was some skill involved with timing and positioning, but overall it was a very repetitive thing.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like you want to be rich just for rich’s sake. Personality and political issues aside, that kind of hoarding has been known to upset game economies. Do you really want to do that for vanity reasons? Or if not vanity, for some annoying price-fixing scheme that throws the BLTC out of whack?

finding next zone

Well I don’t know where the Straits are, I’ll assume Orr, but the best way to go would probably be from Hoelbrak. Take Wayfarer Foothills all the way to its NE corner and there’s a portal to Frostgorge there.

For ascending zone-levels, most of them generally converge in the middle and move south. The glaring exception to this is the Charr lands where the eastern zone-levels ascend as you go up and around counter-clockwise and stop at Frostgorge. Not sure why that is. /shrugs

Idea: Make a material sink for 'precursor' lottery.

in Suggestions

Obsidian.1328

why do you feel t6 materials are too cheap? There is no “too cheap”, prices are adjusted by demand and supply. Of cause they do not cost a lot. people stay lvl 80 infinitely and gather high tier materials, people only level for a while and gather lower level materials. And no, they “should” not be as expensive as orichalcum, they should be as expensive as anyone is willing to pay for them.

If someone “poor” wants to make money, he should act smart and farm lower level areas. Problem solved. What happens when higher authorities meddle in markets can be observed in recent years. Also, why should we reward “poor” players, it is not like it needs higher education or special skills to make some money in the game. I got enough socialism in the country I live in, I do not really need it in GW2.

Seth Meyers voice “Really? Really? You just compared a video-games’ virtual economy to real-life socialism? Really?” /facepalm

Not that it matters, but I suppose you think things like implementing tighter margins and the Glass-Steagall Act of ‘33 are socialism incarnate. Trying to be fair doesn’t necessarily equate to economic bondage.

It’s a game. People want to have fun. Don’t take it so personal.

It is to my great chagrin that I state: The World is Static

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Obsidian.1328

Obsidian.1328

“Do you expect the devs to provide entirely new and fresh content on a weekly basis in every zone indefinitely?”

Yes.

“Devs” should be more like a Dungeon/Game Master. They should be “in the game” “controlling” things.

Well that’s just being unrealistic. By providing new content I don’t mean tweaking existing coding, I mean writing entirely new code for unique events…every week. It’s silly to think you deserve that level of development from any game.

A more realistic change would be to make the event cycles take a lot longer to fire, just like Shroom says here:

They don’t need to add new things. It’s just disappointing that the dynamic events aren’t really all that dynamic. They should have made their effects a lot heavier and slower. If the dredge take over an outpost, it should be very difficult to take it back, but, once retaken, should stay taken for a much longer time.

If a zone is abandoned, it would become so overrun that levels 80s would have reason to come in and clear out everything. Think of it like WvE.

Players get to enjoy a longer, more protracted DE, and devs don’t have to have to drink a gallon of coffee everyday.

But the work required to constantly produce different and unique content every week(or even every month) in every zone is astronomical.

I found this really cool looking armor for my ranger the other day from a random mob drop and was wondering if there was anywhere, aside from tryin to get the drop again, to preview non-rare+ armor sets? I tried GW2Wiki and GW2db but both had only the rarer skins on display. Thanks

Btw, it was a medium armor coat with these kind of fang/tooth fasteners running up the front and side. Should’ve kept the skin but figured I would see it again. I’m pretty sure it was in southern Kryta or Shivs where I picked it up, like Bloodtide Coast or Timberline Falls. Thanks again.

Hate to bring it up again but I keep seeing these comments:

“And about the open world PvP part – yes. God yes. My biggest selling point for any game, and my biggest disappointment with this one. I REALLY, REALLY want a true open world PvP. REALLY.” —Raging Bull.5048

ANet said from the beginning it would not be true open world pvp. They’ve always said that. Why do you complain about a function that was specifically left out of the game design?

GW2 isn’t a PvP game with some PvE elements, it’s a PvE game with dual PvP features. At least that’s how it has seemed to pan out thus far.

Ranger SB Nerf: Not 40 milliseconds

in Ranger

Posted by: Obsidian.1328

Obsidian.1328

I didn’t play Ranger all that much (got mine to 45), but I never noticed an animation bug with Shortbow. And 40ms must be between 4-8% DPS decrease — .04s longer per shot, and that weapon fired at least 1/s, and likely much faster (2/s?).

The wiki has it down as 0.5sec / shot (I don’t think it’s been updated for this change), which would be 2 shots / sec.

Am I the only one who’s never used the shortbow??

Haven’t gotten into PvP yet, but I find using LB Rapid Fire with the Piercing Arrows trait works pretty well if my pet is tanking some. And with cond fields in between the conditions can stack up fast.

For melee, sword and horn using traits that synergize with evasion, and with sword you can almost perma-cripple…just gotta save your dodge/skill2/skill3 for big incoming attacks.

But…LB dmg is a bit low I have to admit. My pet bird does more dmg than I do on a dps basis (for single target) using just the 1 skill. :/

Long bow barely does more damage per hit than short bow at close range. And does so at, according to the wiki, 1.25secs per shot compared to the shortbow’s (pre-patch) 0.5secs per shot.

It does better damage (per hit, I’m not going into dps) at long range.

Well yeah, at mid-range short bow is king. I guess my playstyle tends toward keeping mobs at max range. I rarely get hit by melee attacks from normal gameplay becuase I cripple them (barrage and throw spike trap), push them back, or roll back to keep my distance up. If they persist I simply switch to sword and finish them off. Perhaps I just don’t mind kills taking a bit longer…I just enjoy the game that much for now. :P

Also, using Troll Unguent with Nature’s Bounty (+33% regen time), my pet and I are constantly being regen’d for 50% of all combat time…makes yer pet an excellent tank no matter which species you’re using. Healing Spring is great for groups, but I really dislike the lack of mobility it confers.

The Grove, Rata Sum and Divinity's Reach useless

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Obsidian.1328

Obsidian.1328

I have an idea for the cities…

Waypoint costs were designed as a gold sink and as an anti-farming measure. As far as I know there isn’t much reason to charge for inter-city travel when it comes to farming. Make the Mists portal in LA free from anywhere, not just the Mists. Additionally, make intra-city waypoint travel(going from spot to spot within the same city) half the normal cost…enough to keep some running but also encourage some with larger pockets to fast travel. This way, the amazing landscape should still be seen by many, without forcing it.

Idea #2: Holidays. Have each major city represent one major holiday celebration based on how each city is portrayed:

Black Citadel Halloween — ghosts and bleak landscapes abound here
Hoelbrak Wintersday — no brainer – snow everywhere
Divinity’s Reach Wintersday in July or St. Pats? — they got confetti everywhere :P
The Grove Easter — the whole place is eternally in Spring
Rata Sum not sure on this one…Thanksgiving doesn’t fit all that well :/
Lion’s Arch GW2 Anniversary Day — kinda has to be here I would think

Anybody else miss "punishing" games?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Obsidian.1328

Obsidian.1328

Death penalties + open world PvP is pretty challenging, and it does force you to learn your class’s skills to survive…but it does have its drawbacks. Especially with lopsided faction populations. I know of one game in particular (F2P) in which our side was roughly 30% fewer in total # of players. Add open-world PvP(where the only place you can level is a PvP zone) and a 5% xp penalty on every death, and you got a giant stalemate.

One side camping the outpost 24/7 spawnkilling, and the other side crammed in the one safe spot doing nothing. I once spent a week never leaving town because I was 99% certain to lose 5% xp in one minute that it would normally take me 4 hours to grind out. That’s not challenging that’s mind-numbingly idiotic.

Now that’s an extreme case, but open-world leveling/pvp should be treated with a lot of caution. Otherwise all you end up with is a tiny elite at the top with no one to kill anymore because they killed everyone else off. Think of it like species extinction vs wildlife management: you want things to kill?…make sure you keep up a healthy population of them then.

@Moonpuncher: “Farming/grinding is in MMO players’ blood.”

I get that a lot of people find that satisfying, but I certainly don’t think everyone thinks that way. It’s a personal preference really, and there are probably more than you would guess who don’t adhere to that quote.

That being said, I don’t know if ANet’s singling out of farmers is a bad call or not. Personally, I have no idea why players feel the need to amass wealth/gear/etc. But I suppose if a large enough portion of the player base wants it, it may change. ANet has typically been pretty responsive to player needs.
