Lettuce/Easy-mode

Well put good sir. But I would say they aren’t mutually inclusive either. Some actions are obvious in nature, while others require a bit of thought and reflection. It’s those grey areas that are hard to decide on. And I don’t exactly think that whatever the devs choose to ignore or take action on is the be-all and end-all of what is considered fair-play. Some are just blatent.

For instance, managing to pull a lord completely out of a tower(like at the Woodhaven tower on blue map) from outside of it should be obviously wrong to everyone, regardless of whether or not the devs have addressed it. You shouldn’t need someone else to tell you that. Other things, like a thief’s stealth-spike, are not so cut and dry and require debate and discussion.

Using your brain to win is supposed to be what you do, but intelligence without wisdom is folly.

I don’t know if anyone here ever played Shaiya, but both factions had a running agreement in one of their PvP maps to not use any consumables from the auction house whenever they were in the zone. The reason was because those consumables could only be bought with cash online, so basically it was a pay-to-win scenario. For well over 2 years we managed to keep those pots(potions) banned from the zone, and anyone that used them would be shunned. Why? Because it made PvP into what it was supposed to be: a game of skill, and not of some artificial advantage.

What was hilarious about it was the game company actually tried to get us to stop doing this because they were losing a bit of money over it. Eventually they found other ways to overcome this with gear bonuses purchased online that you couldn’t see in-game. But it was great while it lasted.

Lulz, what was up with that article?? It pretty much condones winning at all costs, even by cheating. By that logic we should get rid of all referee’s in all sports and just have it be a free-for-all. :/ If you were being sarcastic then I’ll ‘lol,’ but I couldn’t tell :P

You missed an important detail. The article says that you should use any tournament-legal move to win. Cheating in the form of hacks or kicking other players in the shins is obviously not legal in tournaments, nor is ignoring the referees/rules and having a free for all.

That’s one of the most important articles (if not the most important article) ever written about competing in games, please don’t dismiss it so lightly.

^

This. Most players that have been gaming a while would recognize the article in a heartbeat.

The bottom line is that you use what tools are available — if you are playing to win. If you’re not, don’t cry about losing.

Abusing culling is cheap? Use it.
Hiding Mesmers in a keep? Use it.
Turtle/stacking/zergballing? Use it.
Placing Trebs in unassailable positions? Use it.
Catapult AOE’ing through gates? Player AOE through walls? Use it.
Food buffs? Consumables? Use them.
Ninja golems? Of course.
Porting golems between zones (is this still possible)? Sounds like a plan*.

ANet will change whatever ANet feels like changing. If they “fix” or otherwise change those strategies … well, there will be new ones.

The article also mentions “real” cheating — breaking the game and community agreed-upon rules. In the context of GW2 and MMORPGs in general, this basically centers on hacking, jumping up walls, through geometry, spam bombing voice comms on other servers, etc. Those are ‘cheating’.

*Critically vulnerable to the kittenING QUEUE MONSTER, however.

Maybe I’m just old-fashioned, but I don’t only go by what ANet sets as rules for fairplay, or any other game-producer for that matter. There is such a thing as unspoken rules of conduct and sportsmanship that are above any written letter. This idea that you should do whatever they let you get away with is juvenile and corrupting.

As for your above examples, almost all of them seem ok because they either have counters, or are designed that way. I’m not saying I’m not guilty of abusing design flaws either, I’ve done my share. But I do feel guilty for doing it. Trying to use sound judgement and having a sliver of a sense of fairplay should never be considered weak or stupid. Heck, I’ll even start by stopping to use that ridiculous underwater pet-glitch that lets it rez you even if it’s supposed to be dead. I think we can all agree it’s not supposed to work that way.

Any takers?

My sole complaints—- culling AOE is being used by all 3 servers. I don’t know that Id call it a clever use of mechanics since we all know culling is busted, but I struggle calling it an exploit either since its being used so much by everyone these days. In any chase, it does feel a little cheap.

http://www.sirlin.net/articles/playing-to-win-part-1.html

Shrug.

Edit:

Insert random sidenote: “zergballing” is generally countered by uncapped AOE effects, whether the classic arrow cart spam (which doesn’t work in the open field), or via specialized WvW builds like Glamour Mesmers or other uncapped AOE effects.

I think you underestimate how quickly a people and their culture can change when exposed to different societies and their values. One good example from real life was the Meiji Restoration in Japan after the US broke their self-imposed isolation. Within a century, the social and political structure of Japanese society changed almost beyond recognition. Even slow diffusion of culture through trade or media can have profound impacts on a society. Movies, TV and the Internet have such far-reaching influence throughout the world that nearly all young people within the 15 – 25 age demographic are likely to have similar tastes in music, fashion and hobbies.

The transformation of the Charr from what they were in GW1 to what they are now maybe be somewhat exaggerated, but it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.

It’s not that really, I just never saw the Charr as an intellegent species. Some of that is personal bias I’m sure, but some is also situational to in-game missions. A lot have used analogies like the Native Americans, Africans, or Japan like you mentioned, before they were exposed to more modern “westerners,” or more aptly “western ideas.” In all those cases, however, we are taking about the same species. I don’t akin the Charr to human beings like I would the dwarves or tengu, for example, in GW1. They were always just another world mob to kill. Granted they almost overran the known world but I attributed this to 1) Titan(Abaddon’s) influence and 2) the numbers to do it. Abaddon could have just have easily chosen another random group like grawl or ogres to screw with humanity.

To me, it’s dubious to compare Charr to “unenlightened” real-world humans. It would be more apt to compare them to neanderthals or gorillas.

Ripping off reality in no way makes a game compelling. As far as I’m concerned, humans should never have been a part of Guild Wars or indeed any work of fiction set in another universe.

You have no idea what you are talking about, by the way. Guild Wars 1 was pretty much all about humans, there were almost no other civilized races to speak of(dwarves and tengu come to mind) until the GW2 prequel came out…er…I mean Eye of the North. By your definition, every single work of art(game) in existence that references humanity is crap. Narrow-minded much?

It is making the game unplayable for some people.

I quit playing on Saturday. Mostly due to the “new and improved” rendering system, though whatever was going on with queues doesn’t help.

It was fun to be in TS and here someone say their queue popped after 5 minutes when I was in queue for 30+ minutes already.

I keep checking the forum though in hopes ANet will say something about these issues in hopes I can come back and play. Since TV is terrible I’ve had to resort to —gulp-- reading more.

Please don’t label all [TV] as bad. Not everything on [TV] is trash and just there to troll your sanity. Some programs are very well-done(Breaking Bad and the Stewart/Colbert combo come to mind). These good programs resent you grouping them into some crappy generalization. If you’re going to just flame all [TV], please take it off the forums and into pm’s.

I see this a lot on these forums, “modern Charr.” I don’t get this. There is almost nothing in pre-EotN GW1 that lends itself to the Charr being anything other than just another threat to Tyria that needs put down, just like the Mursaat, Margonites, and even Titans. The only difference being they are way more savage and numerous. Having them riding around in tanks and helicopters today, while the humans, who engineered a wall that would rival China’s Wall mind you, actually managed to devolve somehow. It’s just plain ridiculous.

It’s not just the Charr either, there are tons of things that don’t make sense to the GW1 world: giant asuran lasers, 4-story motorcyles, absent gods…absent and powerless apparently, the orders, rifles and pistols, no healers, a giant floating steel super-carrier…wth, having everyone but humans as experts on Orr, golems…all golems really. dot dot dot

But more importantly, it is so glaringly obvious to me that the creators of this modern lore don’t feel the need to make any kind of reasonable connection to the past. They wanted a new, fresh game with new races(or species as I like to call them, when I think of “races” in this game I usually think: Canthan, Elonian, Krytan, etc) to play. They wanted to be bigger than GW1, a lot bigger. And the only way to do that is by appealing to as many different demographic groups as you can. That’s why we have these 5 races to choose from, not because of some long-buried narrative that is only now unfolding. The lore doesn’t fit together simply because it wasn’t in ANet’s and NCsoft’s best interest.

It’s disheartening to me, and a little amusing I have to admit, the lengths to which people will go to try and meld current and past lore into a cogent whole. It’s hardly a veiled attempt at mass appeal, I’m not sure why that’s not obvious here. The only problem ANet has with this is a small minority of GW1 players that feel disillusioned with the new content. Small price to pay for GotY and the bank they make with such a marketable MMO. I mean, the original high-end GW2 edition came with a cute little Charr Rytlock plushie…wth is that all about?

It’s a children’s game now peeps, get em while they are young and impressionable and they will stay with you through dozens of expansions.

For myself, I’ve switched to playing GW2 content like it’s an entirely new game with no precedents. You’d be surprised with the results, the PvE world is actually rather enjoyable now.

Meh…

I still think all this mess is because of innocent stereotyping. The GW2 ranger is a departure from a class that has a long history in mmo’s. Whereas the prototypical ranger is almost without fail “all about a bow,” GW2’s ranger is not. It is a beastmaster that is decent with a bow.

ANet could have saved tons of grief over this had they simply explained this out thoroughly before the game launched. They aren’t like GW1 ranger, which a lot assumed it would be regardless of what they actually are. And they aren’t masters with a bow, despite them sold as such.

No where did it say before launch that a ranger’s damage would be nerfed to make up for their pet’s damage. Nor did it say that pets were a permanent fixture. These were things we learned in-game.

Besides Guardians and Engi’s(since they are new they really have no precedent), every other class behaves the way anyone would expect them to in an mmo. Wars clobber, Ele’s storm, and thieves burst, etc. It is not unreasonable for peeps to expect a class called “ranger” to be a bow/archer class…it’s one of the oldest mmo professions in the genre.

I would bet anyone that if they had called this class “Beastmaster” instead of ranger, there would be almost zero “dps” complaints about them in the ranger forums. Err..beastmaster forums.

A bow firing flying rainbow unicorns

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Obsidian.1328

Obsidian.1328

Hmm. I’m guessing the forums have run out of complaints if we have resorted to complaining about a rare bow that only 2 classes can use that fires magical unicorns.

It is a shame indeed that ANET is not allowed to have one silly, fun item in its grand arsenal. They should probably change it so that each time you fire it, a disembodied head fires out with a trail of blood while a woman screams.

Why not a rainbow arrow? It’d be perfectly OK. I could even like it in its own way. The problem is not in the rainbow itself (even though I don’t think they fit the theme, some people like them) but the fact the bow is firing a kittening unicorn! Besides that, the size of the unicorn… it’s too big.

I love it BECAUSE it’s too big and shoots unicorns! It draws attention to itself, it makes others groan and it has got to be the most humiliating thing to get killed by! What’s not to like?

Answer: That it seems to be every spotlight junkie’s wet dream. I don’t know anything else that screams louder, “Look at me every1, OMG LOOK AT ME!!”

I typically have been finding myself using TU, I really like it, but the conditions just seem to get to me. It’s a pain going against a necro sometimes. I may try the purity sigil on my SB, since that will help me cure condis fast.

And I thought my hp was ok, not great, but I use food buffs to get it to 17k.

Overall my goal has been good damage with a little bit of survivability. My guy can take a Thief BS hit and still have a chunk of health left over.

There’s also a better sigil that has a chance to transfer your conditions to an enemy. I think it’s called Sigil of Generosity or something similarly sarcastic.

I’m really not sure why people are upset. GW2 is a western developers(under an Asian companies umbrella) take on an Asian “grinder” MMO, of course it’s going to have crazy things like rainbow bows and unicorns. You grind for 100’s of hours and BAM, a bow that shoots unicorns – seems fitting to me. I’d love to see one in person for the laughs, bu I have yet to see one in game on my new server, but there were many Dreamer’s on my old server, CD, go figure…

^ I don’t know about this. I was excited about GW2 specifically because it was a western-based company and didn’t have all the silly nonsensical color explosions that so many “asian” mmo’s have. GW1 was pretty tame comparatively.

1) npc’s upgrade to 83, and the camp super, lord, and lord’s room guards all upgrade as well.

2) supply camps have 2 additional upgrades: 1 stationary cannon post, and a third yak escort that gives periodic speed buffs.

3) towers and keeps have 2 additional upgrades: telescope(really narrow but long magnification), guild guards(a few elite guards that have to be bought by the guild owning it).

4) find a way to encourage more open field battles. Maybe have a few set battle sites that give really good rewards to the victor like karma, silver, rares, rare mats, sup siege blueprints etc. This one is hard to figure out.

5) get that darn JP outta the map.

Greatsword is a great defensive weapon. Swoop is amazing and when combined with SoH the mobility is the best that ranger has to offer. Just not a fan of its offensive abilities. People talk about spiking with it but I find the slow attacks to not yield enough juice. I prefer the 1 hand sword since the offensive damage is great and it has excellent avoidance. I really like items/weapons/skills that bring good amounts of both to the table. I do not feel greatsword does that. It still lacks in the damage end.

Spot on, Guff. I chose mobility(GS) over damage, since I value that more. Even when I try QZ with GS it still seems slow and clunky. I can’t bring myself to pass on both the block and Swoop for getting me out of situations. I just wish the damage was better like you said. :/

Nothing is more rewarding than two thieves taking every supply camp from SoR Borderlands while they scratch their heads wondering wtf is going on.

-_-

We’re not wondering what is going on lol. You guys are pretty reliable at flipping camps, we just get bored with guarding them 24/7. So we’ve kinda settled into our own flip routine…sometimes I wait around, checking my watch and tapping my foot, for ya’ll to show up and flip. :P

I would like to point out that they endured 7 weeks of 2nd place finishes and 2 weeks of 3rd, as the glorious Isle of Janthir reigned supreme and unchallenged for second place twice in the Long Battle.

Lol, I stand corrected. Its too bad IoJ and TC never got to battle. At one time we we’re probably pretty comparable on wvw population.

Agreed, I would like to see that fight.

Blrrgh: awesome name! It somehow reminds me Chet in the movie Weird Science when he gets turned into that ugly Hylek-lookin thing.

Auburn Skies: stellar name. If you are a female I would be so down for some RP’n in-game…I mean our names speak for themselves.

Well yes, if Tolkien had written that it would be applicable. I’m talking about a different writer using Tolkien’s world as a backstory for his/her own world. Which is the case here.

The first two expansions were beautiful additions to Prophesies, I find no fault with them, in fact I think they added to its richness tremendously. Why? Because they both added wonderful new content while staying true to the existing social/cultural structures that existed in the game. In other words, they made sense. Playing the EotN storyline is like playing in a different world using the same game mechanics.

It’s true that viewpoint matters in history, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying the other viewpoints you’re talking about either didn’t exist or didn’t matter to the GW1 universe. Asurans didn’t exist, Norn didn’t exist, Sylvari didn’t exist, nor Kodan, Quaggan, Hylek, etc… The Charr did…but if you have read any of my posts on them, you’d know I consider them a species akin to Grawl, and not a race.

They didn’t exist because the game was a human-centric game in a human-dominated world. That’s how the writers wrote it, it wasn’t my doing. And furthermore, they meant it to stay a human-centric game otherwise we would have seen more races in the first two expansions. The new writers involved in EotN, and this game, are the ones that created…well…something out of nothing.

Has it already been forgotten that the 3rd expansion was supposed to be another human-based campaign using a meso-american style? They trashed that lore when they decided to make a new game instead, and used that style(Aztec-ish pyramids) as the style the Asurans use.

It wasn’t one little piece of history, it was the history. What’s wrong with having a new game with new mechanics pay homage to its predecessor? And how does expanding on that equate to nothing new? Almost every game sequel out there follows the story-arc of its originator. Why? Because if it was successful enough to warrant a sequel it means it was good and people bought into the content. What we have now makes little sense to anyone steeped in GW1 lore.

By your logic, someone could come out with some LotR sequel that has goblins, orcs, trolls, etc. all part of some post Ringwar world that live side by side with humans and hobbits in equal footing. And just claim, “well this didn’t exist in the previous books, but it’s always been there now because I wrote them into existence and they have to have come from somewhere.” Would that make sense to anyone?? No, because it flies in the face of the social dynamics Tolkien created in middle-earth.

As I stated in a previous post, writing is an artform. Adding/editing/deleting/etc massive content to a previously self-contained story is changing the essence of the artform itself. In this way, the world of GW1 has ceased to exist in its previous state. It is now just an historical footnote of one race’s view of the world, whereas before it was the world.

As a history major in college(which obviously contributes to my angst here), I am very attuned to the folly of modern writers when they try to portray the past in a light that doesn’t try to get as close to the truth as possible. Had this game simply been named something different and not tried to assume the GW1 lore mantle, I would have zero problems with it. But they went out of their way to say they were staying faithful to that history. I just don’t see that they’ve done that in any honorable way.

Was doing the EB JP the other day, and let a bunch of SoR go past me (they waved, I waved, OK we’re having fun jumping). When I got to the top, they waved at me again and sat, and I waved back, fine, hostilities postponed. Then, after I’d turned around to jump they ambushed me. It was kind of funny – were they so scared they had to ambush me from behind 5 vs 1? – but also super cheap and annoying.

If you guys are going to camp the JP and ambush people, fine. If you just want to do the JP, fine. But don’t be cheap cheesers and ambush people after waving at them and sitting OK?

I agree, that’s reeeeeally cheap. But it’s not just us. I read it in area chat the other day with the same exact scenario only the roles were reversed. What bothered me was one of our guys responded with: “haha hilarious…I need to try out too.”

/facepalm

I disagree with the notion that it was because of our “human perspective.” It was simply the writers perspective…and therefore the perspective of the lore of the whole game. Fan assumptions simply followed suit. Not only were the new races not a part of the original history, they weren’t a part of it’s future until GW2 started to formulate. They wanted to add new races and thought, “how can we incorporate them into this history?” It’s retroactive editing at best, and identity theft at it’s worst.

As for your last point, I would say, yeah, they aren’t just human gods, but rather all of Tyria. At least that’s how they were portrayed back then. I don’t think only humans should have gods, I just think that the other creatures of the world had different names for them. Even the Charr used to have some fondness for Melandru, though they probably called her something else.

“and calling her Kormir is a quaint human thing.”

Lolz, I love how Jeff is so condescending to humans, especially when he didn’t even write the original lore. Kormir is/was a human and is a god at the same time. Calling her thus isn’t quaint, it’s logical. Introducing a bunch of new gods/spirits/powers/whatever to an established history shouldn’t change said history.

Like I said earlier, there’s nothing in the original game that even hints at the gods being 1) not the gods of all of Tyria(the world), 2) only an aspect of some greater power yet undefined, or 3) one of some motley pantheon of powers shared by all sorts of critters in Tyria.

I really wish GW2 writer’s would have just divorced themselves from GW1 lore altogether, instead of making up all of this stuff post-Nightfall and claiming, “…oh it was always there, ya’ll just didn’t know about it yet.” Please.

You don’t need points in BM. You can do just fine without them there. Though as a question, how well does your build do. I’d personally take the 10 points from Nature Magic and put them in Wilderness Survival for Bark Skin, but that’s me.

Well I use Melandru’s runes(and the karma armor that it came with) for better toughness. So having that 5 seconds of protection during a burst is really handy. And I use purity sigils for my weapons because I hate Healing Spring in W3.

As far as how well I do…I’d say it’s mostly because of my slow fingers. I’m like 3/1000 vs thieves, 10/100 vs ele’s, and I usually lose to other rangers if they run shortbow/sword. GS damage is low and slow, but I simply can’t pass up on its mobility. At least I can get away now if I have to. :/

Honestly, for me it was realizing I couldn’t play a Ranger the way I wanted to play them. I wanted to be an unsurpassed bowman with a decent sword backup while my pet(if I wanted to use him at all) performed harassment duties. Unfortunately, the game forces you to build around your pet, instead of the other way around.

I run a 20/20/20/10/0 build in W3, and I can’t for the life of me figure out where I’m going to take the points from to put into BM. I need both LB and GS cooldown reduction traits. I alternate between the “pierce targets” and “LB dmg/range” traits depending on the situation. And without “Nature’s Protection” I would die a lot more than I already do to backstabs. Any suggestions?

I’m just a roving bandit mostly, but I think TC’s pvp quality speaks for itself. I mean, you guys held off like 2 dozen Garrison assaults over the weekend from every one of our top guilds. That should speak for itself.

We might have the upper hand in the offensive and field tactics, but you guys take the cake on defense and organization. The speed, skill, and coordination you guys show when pursuing an objective is remarkable. And I’m in no way patronizing.

My hats off to ya’ll.
