That’s an inaccurate parallel. Here’s why…

Indeed, I agree. The American revolutionaries weren’t trying to eliminate the British. Prior to the revolution they were in fact British citizens themselves, and they were simply trying to secure political change, not to remove the whole British ethnicity from American shores. The conflict was over ideology, and all a British citizen would have to do to join the other side would be switch political/social beliefs.

The Separatists don’t just object to the politics of the Charr; they object to the Charr having a presence in Ascalon at all. To secure their goals, all the Charr have to be either dead or exiled from what has now been their claimed homeland for hundreds of years, and become refugees. That doesn’t leave any negotiating room, because no matter what an individual Charr believes or does, he or she will always be a Charr.

A revolution and a genocide are not the same thing. One can morph into the other going either direction, but I think it’s dangerous to just flat out equate them.

It’s not that humans don’t have a valid claim on Ascalon, or that anger over what the Charr have done is unjustified. I don’t think very many people who experienced the Searing would claim that the Separatists are just idiots whose grudge is completely unfounded.

What I’m saying is just that indiscriminate violence against the Charr in retaliation is not a morally justified response.

I didn’t mean to say they were exact parallels, it was the spirit of the revolution that I was getting at. That willingness to die for one’s beliefs is what they have in common, not the reasons themselves. And the Charr are the ones who went for genocide, not the other way around. The humans initially wanted to be left alone, albeit on lands the Charr claimed from a millenia ago.

Additionally…

If your land and family were exterminated, and your people on the brink of extinction, and your conquerers suddenly stop and decide they are going to be civilized from now on…would you say “Oh super, sounds good,” or would you actually try and honor your ancestors sacrifices and memory by fighting back?

Peace in and of itself is not always the right thing to do, neither is choosing life over death. Sometimes fighting back is the only way to ensure your own humanity.

Well yeah, their methods are poor I would agree. Attacking civilians is probably not the best way to win them over.

I was arguing more on their motivations, not methods. In my opinion, the Separatists have a good reason to believe the way they do, they are just going about it the wrong way.

I agree their actions are portrayed they way they are because ANet wanted to leave players little room for moral ambiguity. It’s a little insulting, as well as a little bit outside an mmo’s sphere of influence, to try and pull players’ moral compasses a certain way. If they choose to portray Separatists as one-dimensional and unerringly wrong, that’s their right I suppose. But that also means here that they presume a level of moral high-handedness. Because of that, I reserve the right question their methods and voice my opinions. It’s only fair.

There is a major exception to this fun however, and it happened when facing one of the main human enemies, called separatists. The separatists are a rowdy bunch generally opposed to peace and the human monarchy. The separatists constantly hatch plans to foil the human government and subvert the established authority.

I think you’re misunderstanding who the Separatists are – which is an understandable mistake because their name is rather misleading. It’s not simply a difference of political opinion; that would be Separatist sympathizers (whom you merely talk to,) not the Separatists themselves.

The Separatists are essentially a militia who act outside of government authority to commit acts of terrorism, murder, and sabotage in an attempt to prevent the end of a war that has claimed countless lives on both sides for centuries. Being “separate” by their standards means driving all the Charr off the land by the use of violent force.

They’re opposed to the human government only to the extent that Queen Jennah is trying to end the war; as far as I know they have no other major beef with the monarchy aside from not accepting the treaty or land-sharing arrangements.

We aren’t talking about ordinary nonviolent political anarchists here – we’re talking about an armed, aggressive group with a specific goal that would harm both species.

Also, regarding the “dragging them out of their homes” thing – try just knocking on the door and standing there. That’s what I did. They will become hostile and will attack you first.

One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. Issues like this can’t be characterized along absolutist lines.

For instance, what Adelbern did wasn’t monstrous. It was desperate and sad and admirable all at the same time. His people were getting exterminated by an evil they couldn’t stop. I’d imagine the Ascalonians of GW1 would have gladly gone along with it if they thought they had no way out, GW2 in-game npc convo’s notwithstanding.

Or take the American Revolution. A minority of British transplants taking up arms against their own king and country over mostly economic issues(money) and some enlightenment ideals sprinkled in. It took a heck of a lot of convincing to get the majority of colonists onboard, and I’m sure they were viewed as “traitors” or “separatists” by the crown.

Is there anyone in the U.S. today who thinks the revolution was a bad idea? Or that it unfairly brutally victimized peaceful civilians in the conflict? Heck no, we earned our sovereignty and we’d do it a hundred times over again given the opportunity, despite the loss of life and peace.

At least that’s what I would do.

In regards to the OP, probably any class is viable if you are a skilled key-binder. I think rangers, and their pets, require a greater degree of micro-managing than other classes which leads to a greater distinction between the quick and the not-so-quick. If your reaction time is slow, or you can’t handle multiples of key-binds, don’t expect to be very good. Like me. :P

Human Gods...

Obsidian.1328

Eternal Alchemy and the Dream of Dreams are not entities…

The Six Gods are only on par to Spirits of the Wild, Melaggan (who may be Melandru), and Koda. And they’re put more or less above or equal to the Spirits of the Wild.

Entities is probably a poor choice of words. Religious constructs maybe? My point was that every race not only has their own belief system, but their own divine presence as well(aside from the Charr). The gods of GW1 were largely seen as the gods of the world, of Tyria. Now they are seen as merely the gods of the humans. It’s a subtle, but fundamental shift in the narrative that allows for the detailed expression of the other races’ cultures. But I still don’t think “the gods” are really the same as they were in the first game. They are poor reflections of what they used to be, and insignificant.

Erm…I think you took my post the wrong way. I didn’t say I like Rangers not having guns, I just think ANet won’t change it. If it were up to me, the ranged options should reflect the setting. And even though the GW2 setting is all over the place in terms of tech advancement, rangers should probably be allowed to use rifles like others can.

I’m not sure why you mentioned the Asura gates, I never hinted at them being class-links instead of race-links. I merely said they each tend to reflect time-periods that are incongruent with one another, and not slightly but heavily. The different settings gives ANet a lot of breathing room when it comes to profession design and mechanics. I mean, if the races can be all over the map in terms of advancement, why can’t the professions too?

Syx

If anything, the modern ranger is probably the closest thing we got to a good representation of midieval archetypes. The webster definition describes forest rangers. The thing is, not every class does that. Modern warriors and thieves use guns almost exclusively. Engineers use computers and tools…so this one is halfway there. Guardians, Necro’s, and Ele’s don’t exist. Mezmers…Megan Fox clones? Making the link to modern counterparts doesn’t make sense in a game that is not, well, modern…or real for that matter.

Anyway, my whole point is since the game doesn’t ascribe to any one particular fantasy context, but rather to many, ANet has all sorts of leeway with sticking certain professions into certain stereotypes. Even if it doesn’t really make all that much sense.

Since I live under a bridge, I would say that the GW1 gods were unquestioningly without equal. The GW2 gods are just one of many various spiritual entities in Tyria(Spirits of the Wild, Eternal Alchemy, Pale Tree Dream, etc.), and relatively poor ones at that. Historically speaking, they aren’t really the same gods.

The problem is the introduction of guns(and all of those tanks, robots, etc. you mentioned) into the game in the first place. There was no need for it, and it creates an odd oxymoronic situation with different technologies/crafts/philosophies all existing in the same time period.

It’s like ANet wanted to appeal to the steampunk and techno-magic crowd, while still somehow having the simple “D&D” setting remain relevant. Traveling to each of the capitals you feel like you are using Asuran “time” gates, every city is in a different time period. :/

GW2’s Ranger class is the result of ANet’s desire to keep some of those “classical D&D style elements” in the game. I doubt they will let them have rifles.

Well SoR was 2nd before this week in T2 and was for a LONG time. Not sure why you are complaining.

I guess because the scores easily reflect that SoR is currently already the strongest in the tier before they made the switch.

We’re used to this though, bandwagoners hop here and there, servers rise and fall.

We’ve been looking for more Oceanics for, like, ever. And the few that have recently transferred seem to be more about quality than quantity, we’re not talkin large numbers here.

Also, bandwagoners? SoR has yet to be rank 1 in this tier, and we’ve only been the predictive rank 1 in this tier for a few days now. It’s a long road still.

I can confirm the “max of 5 pieces of siege per 1000 unit radius” just from experimenting during long hours of the night.

Your numbers for finished siege despawn are off though. I’ve seen siege last hours and hours with no one touching them. Unfinished siege does seem to pop after 10 minutes though.

I understand the reasons for limits on siege numbers/placement/despawn time/etc, however, I think almost all players would agree 10/30 mins for unfinished/finished siege is way too short. Sometimes simply running to the camp to grab supply for it takes longer because of all of the random attacks on the camps/dolyaks/towers all over the map you are called to to defend.

With the limits to # of players/map/server, it’s impossible to man every defensive structure and still field a good size force to assault other camps/towers/keeps. We rely immensely on the various pieces of siege still being there when we have to run back into a tower under attack. With the current power of golems and superior rams, there simply isn’t time to build one before the doors are down.

As it stands now, the fact that a lot of siege actually remains in place long after someone touches them(except for trebs, they always pop) is probably the only reason W3 hasn’t succumbed entirely to a giant zerg-fest. Zerging requires almost no strategy. Defense, counter-attacks and supply management are the things which require a good amount of tactics and training. It would be sad to see them go.

Hehe. Sorry Obsidian, but it is a bit funny. Whenever I see accusations of intentional and collaborated 2v1s, it always gives me a clue how much experience the accuser has in WvW. Not more than a month ago, you thought there were map completion points in the jumping puzzles. So … I’m pretty sure you just haven’t participated in WvW enough to understand the difference between how things can appear, based on observed actions of your opponents, and what’s really going on.

Odd post. First of all, it’s not something that happened all the time, or by every guild obviously. But it happened enough this week. And I wouldn’t have said anything about it if it was based merely on observation.

2ndly, what did my mistake with the jp thing have to do with this? At the time I had just begun W3 after taking my time with map completion. Since then I’ve only left the Borderlands at all for 2 AC runs and 1 Fractal. I average probably 7 hours/day in there, I think I know how it works.

Personally, I don’t give a hoot for points in W3, all I care about is keeping the map painted blue, keeping enemies in the dirt, and having good fights along the way. Obsidian.1328

Oh I haven’t trolled here in awhile. ^^

I’m with you on this Gurt, I’ve tried several times to reiterate your/our point but the inertia that is GW2 is too great. It’s probably moot now anyway, seeing as ANet writer’s have been working on this since EotN. I’ve just given up trying to like GW2 story, mostly because of everything you’ve stated…and then some. GW2 Tyria just isn’t the same world as the original. And I don’t mean it just has a bunch of new races and places…the heart and soul of it is no where near the same as it was.

I said it once and I’ll say it again:

The modern lore writers, dating back to EotN, have purposefully chosen this new narrative for gameplay purposes. It’s a common MMO theme, everyone likes different races to role-play right? It’s actually kind of amazing Guild Wars was so popular with only humans as a playable race if you think about it. For the modern authors, GW1 was a perfect backstory with which to weave a new, elaborate storyline that can “reinvent” Tyria so to speak. It makes perfect sense from a mass-appeal standpoint…as well as from a creativity standpoint(lore issues aside, I actually think the Citadel, the Grove, Rata, etc, are wondrous places). It’s just unfortunate(but necessary given the current Tyrian political landscape if you think about it) that humans have had to take a nose dive off the proverbial pedestal to make this happen.

I just wish they named the game something different.

Edit: I use the word “just” waaaay to much :P

Your only assume he isn’t originally from your server, let me remind you it is his golem blue print he is entitled to do with it what he chooses if he wants to use some Supply to build it and try out a golem only to ditch it outside realising 1 it aint fast and second it’s no good without a door to pound on then that’s his loss not yours.

It would be a whole different matter if he was building multiple golem with the keeps supply and ditching them then he really would be suspicious or worse still stealing your golems to ditch outside. My conclusion is an isolated incident here where some dude wanted to probably try out a golem for the first time don’t jump too quick to conclusions.

I don’t think the OP cared about the golem blueprint, it’s the supply that bugged him. It would bug me too. Tower/Keep supply is communal, and is generally only spent on agreed upon things or left to trusting hands. There are a lot of times supply can mean the difference between victory and defeat. So it is kind of everyone’s loss.

As for whether or not he is guilty of anything, who knows. It’s too small an incident to warrant any inquiry really. I would simply keep an eye out for that to happen again from the same player.

I got upset the other day because this guy kept taking tower supply, during an upgrade, to build a couple ballista’s in obviously bad spots. Found out later it was a mother’s 6-yo she let play a bit while she was busy with something. She said he thought he was helping. Needless to say I felt like a grade-A kitten.

Here is an official statement from ANet on the matter from their reddit AMA awhile back. I was looking for the post they made on the official forum stating they were not considering putting names in WvW but I couldn’t find it, so here you go:

“There’s been a lot of discussion about seeing enemy names in WvW. While I certainly understand the reasoning behind the request to see enemy names, we are fairly firm about not showing names of the opposing teams. I think of it this way, in a war people dont introduce themselves before trying to kill each other. When you are fighting in the mists for your world, you are in the middle of a giant war against two opposing forces who want nothing more than to take everything you own and kill you as many times as they possibly can. That guy who just shot you is not Bob the Engineer, he’s the enemy.
Not showing enemy names in WvW also helps players that are less pvp-oriented feel less threatened about venturing into the battle because seeing enemies as anonymous ‘invaders’ creates a sense that opponents won’t be able to recognize them and pick on them because of their lack of skill in a fight, so they in turn feel more embolded to go out and fight in the first place. Not showing names also makes it so people can feel as if they can ‘hide’ in a fight if need be, but still be around to help out. That’s a pretty critical part of making WvW feel more inviting for people that would normally never think about playing PvP in any other game.
We’ve heard “I usually dont PvP, but I love WvW” again and again from people in our beta, so even though showing names might make for a more competitive pvp environment, we’d much rather create a game that is more welcoming for people that don’t normally play the more hardcore PvP games. If you want to see enemy names and get to know the community of people you are fighting against, competitive PvP is the place to get that sort of thing in Guild Wars 2. WvW is the place where you fight with your friends and show your might against a faceless never-ending horde of enemies. It’s not about taking names, it’s about taking back that tower and claiming it for your guild so it can wave your flag right in the enemies face!"

This made me “lolz.” I think ANet’s intentions ran counter to how the game played out(echo). W3 may have been created as a casual-pvp map for casual enjoyment…but that’s not how it plays out now. It’s actually way more popular than sPvP, the reasons aren’t that important for this thread. What is important is keeping players coming back to the game. And W3 is a large part of that.

Judging from the quote above, I daresay that person doesn’t play in W3 much. Yeah you don’t “introduce” yourself before battle in real life, but if you both live through a few engagements you know who it is you are fighting…just attach your own name to him/her. Same with W3, we just forget how they look a week later. But more importantly, it impersonalizes everything. I feel less inclination to fight nameless mobs than I do a tried and true enemy. Yeah, sPvP is supposed to be where you go for that, but why should good competition be relegated to small-group small-map arenas?

And claiming towers for your guild as an incentive?? Towers, and usually keeps, flip so fast it’s pointless to get attached to them. The guild buffs are nice, but hardly a key element. The majority of players in W3 are of a competitive nature. ANet can say they want it to be a casual affair all they want, but the fact is that is where the good competition migrates to. Probably because of the flexibility of it. You can have large zerg clashes as well as small-group or even 1v1 fights on the same map. New players, no matter what game they play, are going to have growing pains. Yeah, they may get yelled at for taking supply out of a keep to build a ballista facing the inside wall(example), but they learn fast. I’m not sure what game the above person is playing, but W3 is not a casual PvP zone. Whether or not that is what they intended is irrelevant at this point, successful games listen to their player base…or go the way of the dodo.

A very simple solution is here: let the player have the option to toggle on/off their name. Personally, I don’t mind getting griefed or singled-out by other players because I’m an easy target(ranger + slow fingers lol), it’s my own fault for being so easy. I just don’t get why “pvp” and “casual” should go in the same sentence. One is competition based, the other is entertainment based. And let’s be honest, W3 is pvp, whether or not you choose to believe it, or even if that wasn’t its original intention.

Let us see who we are fighting, or in my case, who is killing me. =D

I really don’t understand so many of you saying this or that is broke. I’m still having fun playing my ranger. To me one of the best characters i’ve ever made in a mmo. All lvl 80 exotic gear and weapons and feeling pretty good. Love my ranger. Dropping mobs like crazy in Orr and my eagle pet holds agrro like crazy. I just don’t get all the negative post here. Make me kind of glad that i only come to the boards once in awhile.

Try PvP/WvW out.

Rangers in GW1

Ranger in GW1 was great at interrupt others, in GW2 Anet should give us more stun, knockdown and knockback options.
Celestina is right, rangers in GW1 was better at PvP, but really hard to master it, rupt 1/4 sec cast skills requires A LOT of player skill.

lol you can’t rupt a 1/4 skill… only time your rupts on a stupid person who spams his skill(s) on recharge.

You could by predicting when the enemy was going to use a skill (Combos, getting up after KD, 0.5 seconds after finished casting).

That’s what i said… which requires zero skill.

Keen observation is just as much a skill as quick skill usage. It’s a lot harder on 1/4 sec skills, but still doable for sure. Especially when you know you are facing the same opponent and get a feel for how they play.

’Rupting monk skills(1/2 sec) was much more common though, a good ranger could almost shut down a healer if quick enough.

Humans.

I agree it is an interesting and unique concept the way they portray humans in a typically “elvish decline” role. I’m just wondering why they introduced new playable races in the first place? I mean it worked pretty darn well in GW1, and, let’s face it, being able to play only humans is a unique concept in its own right compared to dozens of other MMO’s. It just feels like they tried to go so mainstream with it.

Kinda bummed they moved this page from the W3(WvWvW) section. It’s not guilds we are advertising for, it’s for our Sanctum of Rall server…specifically for W3. Since there is no “server recruitment section” I figured the W3 page was the best spot for it. Especially since this is all for W3.

EBG is just terrible. The whole place has no point. It needs to be about 4 times bigger than it is right now. As it is now all you do is capture tower – build treb – treb stonemist – faceroll stonemist – die.

The place is so poorly laid out and designed as it is right now. There is little strategy involved in the whole place.

I couldn’t agree more. I stopped going there almost entirely after I realized it was really only zerg-friendly, and defense was a laughable concept. Everything is so scrunched together you can throw a rock and hit everyone around you. There’s not much space for open field battles like there is in the BL “starter” maps. This may be why it’s losing popularity. That and Garrison fights can be so fun due to all of the crazy angles, platforms, and crannies all over the place; 3rd floor fights are hilarious.

And playing as the blue corner…sigh. Both of our outer towers (Durios, QL) are easily trebbed from Garrison. Not sure if this is true for the other two corners. Red corner I know only 1 tower is reachable, Green I thought just 1 but could be 2 /shrug.

Ranger feeling

Yeah, a modern “sniper” is usually someone with a rifle, but in game-speak it also means anyone who can deal good single-target dps at range. You can snipe with bows in games just fine.

But to answer your question Morty, no, the GW2 Ranger is not a sniping class.

Agree.

You felt like a true ranger in GW1.

Here’s the real kicker though…ready for it?…

Ranger’s were arguably the best anti-assassin class in Guild Wars 1

No joke.

Speaking of keeps, is the Garrison inner back door still immune to upgrades?

And if so, when will that be fixed…or why not?

I assumed Anet designed it that way because watergate is so defensible.

I see, I guess I’m just tired of playing the PvGolem game with keeps and towers lol. It’s almost to the point of this:

“Golems! Watergate!!”

“How many?”

“6…maybe 7”

“kk…everyone to Dawn’s/Cragtop/Cliffside! Start building the counter-treb!”

haha

Dear BG NA morning zerglings,

Could you please schedule your activities for a few hours earlier? I’m really anal about siege placement, and it’s frustrating I never get to see the results. Seems you guys always start pouring into SoR BL right when I have to go to work. I have a few sneaky ballista’s I wish to skewer your golem column like Buffy at a vampire bar-b-que. I mean it’s really quite rude not to think of us and our feelings.

Also, what Golden said above^

Longbow Ideas, share them with me.

in Ranger

Posted by: Obsidian.1328

Obsidian.1328

Problem with the current ranged values of LRS is that when melee gets on you, it becomes soo weak its not funny, and its attack speed is so slow, making it near useless when close range. Making its damage consistent across all ranges and only gaining crit chance the further you are would make it worth using at max range but not an absolute need. Also this was really the only skill Id like to have 1800 range when traited. Our longbow already goes too 1800 range because the arc in arrows, the way to fix this without making our range go to 2100 would be make longbows range untraited 1500, 1800 when traited, and increase projectile speed to that of bullets. I swear my rifle warrior feels like he only has 1200 range because the bullets travel so fast and straight.

As mentioned for rapid fire, Id be happy with it completely if it was like volley, 5 hits in 2.5 secs same damage. I wouldnt mind a bleed if it lasted like 20 secs and hunters short applied 5-10 stacks of bleeds, but I dont see the logic in that really, since hunters shot implies a precision strike that is meant to kill or maim so you can get the kill, so adding a cripple too it, or making its cd 5 secs would be the best logical change imo. Is my idea for barrage fine, or the current form of barrage fine? I personally am fine with its damage but not its cd. It needs a shorter cd since thats one of the few reasons longbow is good atm.

Well ya I agree with your ranged ideas. I just don’t think Longbow should be a viable close-range weapon. I mean, the knockback skill kind of hints at that…keep the dude away from you. If you must fight close-up, switch to either a melee weapon or the shortbow/axes.

Hunter’s Shot…I suppose I was expecting something similar to the GW1 skill. It was basically a slightly faster shot that applied a long bleed. Most other skills closely mimic their GW1 predecessor. At any rate, I still think there should be at least one skill that applies a damage condition. Even the Greatsword, which is an almost purely defensive/CC melee weapon(the Longbow being its offensive/CC ranged counterpart), has a nice bleed attack.

On a related note, it’s rather depressing Warriors get both peircing projectiles and better range in one trait. We have to go 2nd tier in 2 different traitlines to get that.

Score Update @ 10:20 am Eastern time

Quick! Start the camp upgrades before they get here!!

When I left for work an hour and a half ago, we still had Bay, Hills, Woods, Dawns, and Garrison…all upgraded and sieged. I grow weary of the nightly BG roflstomp of our skeleton crew.

How ’bout we pick a time, say 6am west coast NA, and we play “pretend PvDoor” for a couple of hours. Zippy will even donate a golem to the cause.
