Unfortunately Obtena, because Anet has decided to push harder forward in its PvP mode, it has to think about the competitive meta. Otherwise the competitive scene will grow stale and people will leave. Metas change when devs give players the tools to change it. Sitting on your hands and not addressing key issues with classes across the board in a competitive game will not help anything.

I don’t see that … or to be more clear, I don’t think Classes being pushed to a meta status relates to ensuring that the competitive scene doesn’t grow stale. In otherwords … Anet can achieve ‘fresh’ scene and still have one or more crappy PVP classes.

I never said Anet doesn’t make changes to the game that affect meta … obviously they do. What I’m talking about here is that I do not think Anet purposefully make game changes to impact the meta state in some direction, so using meta to appeal to Anet’s focus to fix Eng is way out of line. Basically, I don’t think Anet makes balance changes around what is and is not meta. The reason being because it’s folly to chase it.

Hey let’s be clear here. I don’t disagree that Eng isn’t in the best place but the argument that it needs love because ‘not popular’ and ‘not meta’ is just silly. It also doesn’t address any real deficiency with the class, since those things aren’t really issues.

Anyways, you’re a good example of what I’ve already stated … you need to find a class that works for you … there are 8 others you can choose from.

You don’t understand how a profession not being desirable in any aspect of the game demands attention by ArenaNet?

I do, but being undesirable and being not-meta aren’t the same thing now are they. As far as I’m concerned, you have no reason to continue to respond to my posts if you want to ignore that being desireable as a class is more than just some meta rank. As long as Eng continues to offer a gameplay style that people like, it will get played.

Actually, I’m more than satisfied. Besides, for a company that has taken a hands off approach to the TP, it’s pretty funny they would give anyone the impression they will do something about this considering they already make MC’s available to every player for nothing by doing nothing. I can’t wait to see their solution actually, just to see if it makes MC’s cost even more than they do now. That would be hilarious. I can see it now “we are increasing the number of MC you get from your login reward by X” … how people would still QQ.

You still don’t get it … Classes exist to give you choice, not to challenge Anet to make them equally popular through equivalent game performance. It’s just logic that not every class is equally popular, but it is folly to very simply attribute that to waning performance . So continually presenting popularity data as the reason that Engi is not a good class and needs attention is not compelling and not even really relevant.

This isn’t about marketing. If you were to ask me how the ‘marketing’ works to promote game balance, it’s the fact there are 9 classes that players can choose from to find the one they like to play the most. Even the fact there are so many classes available is enough to tell you that chasing meta isn’t their strategy for game balance. It’s too many.

Second of all, I never even said engi was bad. I said it’s not a part of the meta-game.

I don’t get why not being part of the meta game demands the attention the class needs from Anet. Anet doesn’t target ‘meta’ when they address class balance because it’s folly to do so … so the idea that ‘meta’ is compelling to them is nonsense. We know it’s not how they operate because we rarely see the kinds of changes that are needed to significantly move a class up that meta ranking ladder.

You’re proposition is simply an opinion. Certainly, some people will feel that way though, but that’s neither here nor there. You’re claims are unsubstantiated and can even be viewed as sensational. You have no idea how popular the class is or not. It’s quite irrelevant anyways. If you think Anet tries to target some popularity level with each class, then it is you that has this wrong. Anet makes various classes available to provide different styles of play, not to make it harder for them to make them all popular with players. I don’t suspect for a second Anet cares about the popularity of any class, as long as players who play it do so for the right reasons. Clearly, if you’re miserable playing it, you haven’t chosen the class for the right reasons.

yes I have been involved with a development team … and to be clear, your analogy is nonsense because in this game, you do have choice … the choice of class. It’s not black and white like play or don’t play. Ignore it if you will, but the reason there are classes with various kinds of gameplay options is exactly to avoid situations where players are locking into playing a class they don’t like, for whatever the reason.

Will Engi survive 2017 if it’s not meta .. it sure will, because people choose to play it for reasons that aren’t related to meta. Perhaps the question is if meta players will recognize that it’s more reasonable for them to chase the meta with good class choice instead of Anet failing to chase meta into their game state and class development.

TLDR: If a class offers a playstyle that is primarily unique in the game, people will play it regardless of it’s meta status.

Sorry, but no. This isn’t Pillars of Eternity or Dragon Age. This isn’t some single-player game where you can RP/theorycraft to your heart’s content and think you’ll be successful just because a build is “unique.”

You aren’t really paying attention then because you can do lots of things in some of the most unoptimized ways and be extremely successful in this game. You can even suck bad at PVP and get skins, etc… Again, you’re only seeing this game through your definition of what’s important … and Anet doesn’t necessarily share your vision about that. Remember, meta is not Anet’s creation; it’s something players concocted. It’s really unreasonable that you kitten Anet’s development against this narrow definition of ‘success’, then expect them to adopt it and agree with the idea that Eng is bad because ‘not-meta’. There is nothing compelling about that proposal.

You still didn’t address the fact that chasing meta is fundamentally a stupid thing for a game dev to do in the first place, even if they do measure class success as meta or not.

Tomes of knowledge shouldn’t drop from chests.

Why not?

Chests are intended to drop junk as filler; Tomes of Knowledge deliver.

None of the persons who spend gems (aka real money) wants to see a junk item in their chests.

Unidentified Dye is also a bit out of its place here because in most cases it either gives a “commum” or “uncommun” dye that costs 1g at best while the equivalant of one black lion key is about 35g.

Those aren’t junk items … many players like getting free levels. The idea they shouldn’t be there because you don’t want them is ridiculous to say the least. Anet can’t customize BL chests to individual player wants. If you don’t like what you get from BL chests, then you can ignore them completely.

You’re post confirms what I suspect … people that make the game about meta only care about meta. Engi is both functional, by itself and in groups. It’s only when you introduce meta into that equation that you lessen the value of the class. Again, if you only see a class for it’s meta-value, then of course your only going to kitten a class and it’s performance against how it stacks up in the meta. Unfortunately, the game is so much more than that. So Ok, for some people this is everything, so I won’t debate that but that leads to my next point.

There is nothing conditional about the folly of chasing meta as a game developer. YOu might think I’m being glib by saying there are other classes you can play if Eng falls out of favour, but that is the answer, especially for the people that only care about meta status. There is no reasonable approach for Anet to ensure that every class that ’isn’t meta’ is made meta every time the game changes, just so people can play the class they want and get the highest levels of performance. Ideally sure, we would have that but over 4 years later, we don’t. That’s not just GW2 either. It’s prevalent in lots of MMOs with a diverse range of classes. I will leave it to you to think about why that is.

Meta is related more to optimization than it is popularity. If there was no reason to optimize in this game, there would be no meta but people will always end up playing the class that they like playing. This should be obvious at this point because meta changes all the time; it’s a response by players to the state of the game.

The idea that Eng isn’t popular because it doesn’t have meta-value is held only by people who care only about how the Eng stands in the meta. The only part of the playerbase that majorly ignores classes that don’t have meta-value is the SUBSET of the whole playerbase that cares about it. Maybe this will surprise you … people don’t always choose a class because of where it stands in the meta. Meta-value is not the only way to kitten class health. I don’t even think it’s the primary one.

Frankly, i think ‘not being meta’ is a kitten poor reason to do anything to a class. I don’t get the point of trying to chase the meta for the subset of players that put such an emphasis on it, especially when it changes with other game changes and when players can play whatever class they want. It’s a fools errand to do such a thing.

I’m sure ‘being part of meta’ is not Anet’s way of measuring whether a class is ‘fine’ or not … so when you look at it that way, you are looking at it with the wrong perspective.

Being a part of the meta is a measurement of a profession’s general health.

What makes you think that has anything to with Anet’s idea of a profession’s general health? Not being obtuse here but I don’t think meta is a significant factor in a profession’s general health because the concept that meta and healthy profession don’t necessarily have to coincide.

now obviously Anet probably would like people to play Eng as they probably think it has something interesting to offer in terms of gameplay (that’s the whole point of having many classes) but I don’t see how not being meta prevents people from choosing the class to play it because it’s playstyle appeals to them. That’s completely meta-independent, yet it’s a very important consideration when assessing profession health.

I would start to worry about Engi profession health if some other profession started encroaching on the things that make them unique as a class.

TLDR: If a class offers a playstyle that is primarily unique in the game, people will play it regardless of it’s meta status. People playing a class they like because of playstyle indicates a healthy class. Chasing meta is a waste of Anet’s investment.

What fraction of players do you think use any mystic coins? Compare that to the fraction that logon daily.

Most people that are active enough to login daily (with the possible exception of alt accounts) will most likely consume at least part of their coins. Many people that aren’t invested in game enough to ever need MCs won’t be active enough to login daily, and also won’t care enough to sell their coins on tp (so reserves generated by them can safely be ignored).

Sure thing … and that’s where we are now … a market that has stabilized more or less, to a range of prices for a mat. Didn’t Anet say that’s pretty much how they want the economy to work? I think so. See, my problem with this whole discussion is that people don’t realize that individual mat prices are not really Anet’s interest, as long as they achieve certain behaviours. Market stability is one of those. There is really no argument for ‘doing something’ about MC’s when they behave like Anet want’s them too. I have no doubt Anet will do something … and it will still be something that maintains that stability. They don’t set targets for mat prices.

This is very semantic and not very pragmatic but nonetheless is worthwhile. Just look at the balance patch that brought us symbols on sword/scepter. It was an excellent balance-patch and many of the changes there were the verbatim suggestions made here on the forums.

Unfortunately, I don’t think disregard for the pragmatic leads us to much in these discussions. There are lots of things as you pointed out, that are nice to have; more options in all game modes is a nice to have for instance. Personally, I don’t think the question here is if GS should be buffed because it’s behind. I think the pragmatism comes in with asking a different question:

What is lacking (or excessive) in the Guardian and where can that lacking thing get buffed (or where is that excessive thing located so it can be nerfed)? Use another example … people want to nerf hard to dodge SOJ pull … but that skill addresses a critically lacking ability that Guardians have been missing.

Does improving GS really address a lacking or excessive thing in the class? I don’t think so, at least not the suggestions the OP makes. I think this really boils down to what are the changes trying to achieve … a more popular GS usage is just not compelling to me.

To me the obvious argument is that their intended work isn’t to make every weapon equivalent for every or even one game mode. You think all those weapons bring something to PVP and GS doesn’t? I think that’s disingenuous. If all weapons BUT GS bring something to PVP and GS doesn’t, I think it’s coincidental. Anet buffed the weapons recently because they were deficient from day one with obvious Guardian-flavoured effects, namely symbols, not to make them good for PVP. That’s simply an after effect. The motivation for the improvement was based on the class concept, not the performance in PVP.

Personally, i think you exclude GS from your ‘list’ just to create your point. It happened on Guardian? OK … what about the other 8 classes. I can tell you now, if Anet’s goal is to make every weapon a place in PVP for every class, you wouldn’t know it based on how long it’s taking to happen.

The other obvious argument (that you make for me) is that every Guardian weapon, except one, is good in the PVP environment because it serves a purpose. Sounds like a first-world MMO PVP problem to me. If that’s the worst thing happening to this class, I would say we are doing pretty kitten good.

He likes the GS? Fine, he can use it … but don’t complain it’s not as good as other choices when those other choices are also available to him. Anet has made no attempts to provide ‘equal opportunities’ in every game mode for every weapon available. GS used to be good … now it’s something else. GS might be good again in the future. Chasing meta is not a good way for Anet to justify changes to weapons because it’s dynamic. Clearly, they know this. Clearly, not enough players know this.

Frankly, i don’t believe this is derailment. I think it’s healthy to discuss why or why not things get buffs. I certainly don’t believe GS needs anything that the OP mentioned, especially just because he likes the GS. I don’t get what real problems he’s trying to solve with his suggestions. in Guardian

Posted by: Obtena.7952

Nope just punishing. You already had your chance to dodge the tether. Now your options are to break it or stab it which is pretty forgiving. Skills that bind will hit anyways to promote good gameplay. You don’t get 2 chances to dodge the same skill. If you fail you counterplay it or accept it.

Actually to dodge it requires either lucky dodge spam or Jedi senses at a 1/4 second cast time with literally zero tell.

This means if you are semi competent and do not currently have a diagnosed mental handicap you should land 90% of your Spear of Justices on a DH.

That is a problem and needs proper balancing from Anet. Look for DH nerfs on skill floors at the next balance patch with a target on Spear of Justice

Actually, it’s not a problem at all if Anet intended for it to be very hard to dodge in the first place. Don’t pretend you know what Anet intended for how the skill should work.

Devs have also stated that the reward for the low, skill floor of DH is,a problem.

Spear of Justice is one of those skills that exemplifies that problem.

Yup … games got lots of problems. Trick isn’t to identify them, it’s to prioritize them and fix the ones that are the worst ones. Even if SoJ exemplifies that, it’s not the only thing that does and it’s not the worst offending PVP skill right now either because as I said, even if it a low skill floor, it addresses a key problem Guardians have had since day 1 … staying engaged with their targets.

So question is … do we nerf an easy to access skill that allows Guardians to engage their targets? I don’t think we should. I mean, are you telling me that opponents of the Guardian are so bad that they need to completely avoid Guardians to win PVP? Sounds like a L2P issue, not a low skill floor issue.

That’s not a statistical measure and the range that any loot value you get from chests varies over a few orders of magnitude, so that gold value you ‘put’ to them is quite worthless, misleading even; one could say there is a chance they get 25 percursor skins worth1000’s of G … that doesn’t mean much. Here’s my 25 key haul. I’m pretty happy with it.

To each their own, but I don’t think I’d pay 335g for the glider, 3 wardrobe unlocks, 25 personal presents, and a few odds and ends.

Depends what wardrobe unlocks you got wouldn’kitten That’s part of the gamble that we all understand when we buy keys.

Or just dodge it, block it, reflect it, destroy it, apply Stability, use an Invuln. And so on there’s counter play to it just saying.

Let the salt flow!!!

That is my point. You should be able to dodge it. Hence why a 0.75s cast time is fair to all concerned.

You can dodge it. That is my point… the projectile still has travel time and does have a precast ans animation to tip you off.

The precast animation is identical to pistol#5’s animation. The projectile travel is only relevant if it’s used from maximum range otherwise it’s beyond what you can realistically expect a human to be able to react to.

Also latency. Some of us live in states that don’t have fiber infrastructure.

Hold on … latency is never a reason for a game dev to increase skill cast times. Carry on.

This is stupid. Why would you ban/temp ban people for doing that? They legitimately use the game mechanics.

What is legitimate about having a clicker 3rd party program heal you periodically? IIRC, that’s what they are doing here.

I would believe that even if they use the game mechanics legitimately, they are using them in an unintended fashion.

It’s ridiculous how one is being tricked these days. By adding the “seasonal gift” to each BLC, they significantly reduced the number of valuable drops per chest (skins and skin unlocks, and the like). Adding the chance of a fourth slot drop doesn’t make up for that fact.

The only funny part is that players think they are being tricked when Anet full out tells you what you can get in the BLC every season. Maybe ‘being tricked’ is code here for players not paying attention

I don’t see a problem with this. Ranger GS skills are not related to other profession GS skills, so the comparison isn’t valid.

Well, I don’t see the appeal of fashion wars. Couldn’t care less what my character wears. But I’d dive into decorating my home instance in a flash :P

Then why do you play GW2? Collecting skins is what the end game of this game is. If you don’t care about it, I don’t understand what you are really doing in this game. At it’s core, GW2 is about playing dress up.

I mean, there are reasonable requests for changes and improvements … and then there are requests that try to make the game something it isn’t. I’m not saying that houses and fishing won’t happen, but recognizing a game for what it is will go a long way to ensure you choose games you want to play wisely.

That was my point, I don’t care about dress up, yet still GW2 is almost exclusively what I play.

I don’t think you understood me … You can’t play GW2 and not care about dress up, because that’s the primary reward of the game. I mean, you can, but you won’t be satisfied with it. Anyways, I think housing is out of the question but I don’t see why they couldn’t implement fishing … or bird hunting

Yes, you speak for all the players. I forgot. How silly of me. Everyone who runs dungeons biggest concern is the annoyance of trash mobs they don’t have to fight. You win.

I don’t speak for them, the dungeons’ status told us how do they think.

Anyone here think the dungeons are popular now?

And you associate how unpopular dungeons are with a minor inconvenience … like I said, if that’s the worst problem dungeons have, then it’s clear the need to fix it isn’t too urgent. Looks like Anet agrees too.

OK let’s have a logical approach here. Anet set a certain reward for certain content. What you or I think is appropriate is irrelevant, or any other player. So logically, it follows that if Anet makes rewards easier to get in dungeons, they are going to also reconsider looking at what rewards you get. The reward doesn’t match the length and difficulty? Do we play the same game here? Either I’m really awesome at dungeons or you aren’t … dungeons are easy and they are short. I mean, if there isn’t a demonstration of honesty here, there isn’t much to discuss. There are open world events harder than some dungeon runs.

I don’t need to argue with you further. If the most pressing issue for Anet to improve dungeons is to simply eliminate what amounts to a minor annoyance, then it would seem to me that dungeons are in a pretty awesome place right now. I know you don’t feel that way and many others don’t either, so logically, I don’t think you can continue to point to trash mob removal as THE main fix to making the best improvement to dungeons.

OK, I’m done now. You can take your trash mob drum and go beat on it in the corner.
