Until recently I didn’t see this as a problem with party formation requests. However, on GW2LFG.com now I’m seeing for (at least) Citadel of Flame speed runs that some groups only want Warriors and Guardians due to their heavy armor/increased survivability
You’re basing your opinion on the silly requirements of some silly kids on the internet? Seriously? The only reason these people want a Guardian or Warrior is because they themselves are squishy glass cannons. The naturally higher Armour of the aforementioned will make them more likely targets by the mob, while the glass cannons sit back and pew pew.
Somebody mentioned COF P2 door event. My full Berserker Engineer can kite for the first 35-40%, while at the same time I’ve seen Warriors and Guardians drop by 20%.
Here’s my latest "DPS/Support build":http://goo.gl/3sN0j.
Dressed in Knight’s armour, Knight’s trinkets with Beryl jewels and Valkyrie weapons, you’ll approach 55+% of Crit Chance with 1-H Sword.
The build is designed around stacking Might on allies. Hence, I picked up +60% Might duration, another +20% from Virtues and topping off with Chocolate Omnomberry Cream (+20% Boon duration, +40% Magic Find while under effect of a Boon). That means Empower generates 3x Might for 16s per pulse, Virtue of Justice activation gives another 3x Might for 10s, Empowering Might gives 1 for 10s, and last but not least, another 10s 3x Might with Shield of Wrath + Purging Flames combo.
This means you’ll be switching weapons often enough to warrant an on-swap Sigil. I went with Superior Sigil of Battle for the extra 3x Might because... Might. Dayum.
Something has been nagging at me recently and I finally pinned it down.
On the November 15 2012 patch, Empower’s duration was increased from 8s to 10s. However, at that time, the boon duration did not increase.
Then the December 14, 2012 patch states
Empower: Skill fact has been updated to display the proper amount and duration of might.
Currently in-game, the tooltip and Boon duration is still 8s.
Was the Nov 15 change reverted? Or am I missing something?
I still don’t like how little you have Chaos Armour running. Unless you’re hiding with clones, I reckon it shouldn’t ever be off cooldown. Especially since it’s an instant cast.
Have a safe and fun trip!
I rarely ever get to cast Ether Clone with the sceptre, be it PVE or WvW, unless I’m feeling particularly lazy. For me the Mesmer sceptre shines with Illusionary Counter/Counterspell and Confusing Images. By the time I’m done casting both (and Phantasmal Duelist), I’d have swapped to my second weapon set, Shatter and sit on 12 stacks of Might.
Even with Debilitating Dissipation, the rate of Clone generation with the Sceptre Chain is way too slow. Even if you sit and spam #1, it takes 2 seconds to generate a Clone. Upon Clone death, you’re not even guaranteed to get the 3x Bleed stack. Confusing Combatants? That single Confusion stack lasts for 3 seconds. That’s, on average, 1 PVE mob attack or approximately 700 damage on a player from 2 skills.
You say you aren’t thrown into overflow, but which? Chances are you will be in Lion’s Arch overflow because that’s where most people are while they LFG for Fractals groups. In case you’re wondering, Fractals the ANet’s version of an endless grind dungeon that PVE players have been salivating for.

It’s well known that the tooltips of skills and traits of GW2 are lacking in some areas. This thread will be a compilation of suggested tooltip fixes for each class, as well as racial Utility skills. If you have a tooltip you would like changed, feel free to post here, preferably following the format detailed below.
Format
Profession
Weapon – Skill Name (e.g. Sword – Mind Slash)
Utility – Utility Name (e.g. Utility – Judge’s Intervention)
Trait – Trait Line – Trait Name (e.g. Trait – Soul Reaping – Gluttony)
Example I
The Mesmer’s Sceptre Ether Clone skill incorrectly states that it causes Confusion. Proposed change would be to remove reference to the Condition. Strikeout function is called via [ s ] [ /s ] tags.
Sceptre – Ether Clone
Clone. Shoot out a third bolt of energy that confuses your target. Summon a clone that casts Ether Bolt.
Example II
The Mesmer’s Staff Winds of Chaos skill does not state the number of bounces, as seen in other bounce skills such as Mirror Blade. An extra ‘icon reference’ is suggested to be added
Staff – Winds of Chaos
((Number of Bounces: 1))
Doing a once-over,
250 Heavy Moldy Bags at
1s 73c each costs (as of posting)
4g 32s 50c
From the contents of the above, selling on TP at prices as of posting, it would total to
3g 38s 58c
after tax
That means in order to make a 10% profit, the bags would have to be bought at 1s 23c.
Do these new exotic recipes have any cool effects or are they just new combo’s of stats?
No new effects. Some are new and much sought after by some builds, including the Colossus Fang (Amulet), Tortured Root (Accessory) and Plague (Ring) which give Cond/Prec/Tough (aka Rabid). This stat combination otherwise does not have Exotic equivalents for Trinkets.
Now…finding a scepter skin that looks good for guards…that’s a diff story
Princess Wand.
Works whether you’re a petite Human Female cosplaying Sailor Moon, or a massive bald ebony Norn Male cosplaying Sailor Moon. It. Just. Works.
Are the dungeon recipes Soulbound/Account Bound? Did you character have Jewelcrafting?
Guardian Staff > Twilight Arbor
1. All attacks can be avoided by Dodging or skills that provide Evasion or Distortion. As a Mesmer, Distortion is obtained through Shattering Clones and/or Phantasms with F4, Main Hand Sword’s Blurred Frenzy (skill #2) and the Blurred Inscriptions Major Trait (Dueling, Tier 2)
2. Yes, how suitable a weapon is for a given situation is dependant on the profession using it, as each Profession, even if using the same weapon, have completely different skills.
3. My Mesmer happens to lean towards the Support role, using Glamours (Null Field, Feedback, Veil and Portal Entre/Exeunt) and Focus for all sorts of fun utility. This form of Support provides up to three large Ethereal Fields to apply Chaos Armour to allies, and Confusion on enemies. The Focus, when traited with Warden’s Feedback, gives you TWO more skills that reflect enemy projectiles back to the attacker, not only mitigating a large chunk of damage, but also providing plentiful DPS at the enemies’ own expense.
Second, you cannot dodge through movement-blocking barriers, such as a Guardian’s Line of Warding.
Actually, you can, for whatever silly reasons.
Either the weapon in those hands are broken, can’t be used so you lost the skills; you unequipped your offhand weapon, or swapped it with another weapon.
Weapons don’t break….
To better explain the situation than our friend LittlePanther, Dungeons, especially Explorable mode dungeons, are farmed by level 80 characters for tokens and coin. When grinding such content, people very much prefer the dungeon run to go as smoothly and quickly as possible. Even when scaled down, level 80 characters are usually in better gear (i.e. better stat distribution) and have access to better Utilities and Major Traits, allowing them to maximise damage and/or survivability. Hence, most level 80s don’t accept lower-level characters because they’re just too lazy and/or don’t feel like giving you a free ride through the dungeon.
Is it worth doing dungeons at lower levels? It depends. For example, a “typical” Ascalonian Catacombs Explorable Mode run takes about 20-40 minutes and gets you ~70% EXP for a particular level, as well as lots of pretty good loot. However, in bad groups, even with level 80s, the run can take up to an hour and/or not even succeed in the first place.
Whatever the hell you guys are doing with the culling system, it’s not working.
Each time an enemy comes into view, I’m immediately hit with massive lag with skills firing off 3-10 seconds later, that’s assuming I don’t disconnect.
Worst of all, this only happens in WvW. Where I spend the majority of my time.
PLEASE fix this.
Just had too much fun defending against the Breakout event at West Tower of BP Borderlands last night (morning EST). You guys just had so much siege and Siegerazer was one mad kitty.
And to think we made an excursion into BP BL to ninja camps and maybe a tower, only to end the night with an epic holdout.
The LFG tag is map-specific. It’s designed for fellow explorers of Tyria to easily hook up if they are on the same map. Putting up the LFG icon does two things, 1) puts a bright blue icon left of your character’s name, and 2) lists your character’s name in the LFG window. This is (was meant to be) helpful for big Dynamic Events, like the Karka invasion in Lion’s Arch recently.
The biggest misunderstanding of this tool is that people expect/want it to be a Dungeon Group Finder, similar to what World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs have introduced in the recent years.
Morgan’s Spiral, yes. It’s a jumping puzzle. There are plenty about Tyria and is/was always my greatest joy when I found one and (eventually) completed them. If you truly want to enjoy jumping puzzles, don’t rely on online guides.
Gunning for this new rune for my Cleric’s armor set to synergise with Healing Breeze.
I use 0/30/30/5/5 with the new Blind Exposure.
Flashing Blade + Virtue of Justice Activate + Ray of Judgement = 3 stacks of Might + 9 stacks of Vulnerability
If your run Purging Flames you can get another 3 stacks of Might using the Shield of Wrath’s Blast Finisher, plus 3 more through Might of the Protector.
With Focused Mind you can also teleport to retreating foes mid-channel of Zealot’s Defense or Whirling Wrath using Judge’s Intervention.
Similar to the Necromancer’s Deathly Swarm (offhand Dagger) skill, the Condition is removed from you and applied to the enemy. This transfer takes into account the number of stacks and duration of the Condition on you, so the proc will transfer all 5 stacks of Bleed at whatever remaining duration to the enemy.
2) Is leveling through WvW faster or slower than exploration and doing the storyline?
This depends on whether your server and/or guild is completing lots of objectives, i.e. taking over supply camps, towers, keeps, etc, killing enemy supply Dolyaks, claiming Sentry Points (flags), so on and so forth.
Another easy way to gain exp is by run to and from Supply Camps, grabbing Supply and building Siege Weapons (that others place) or repairing Walls and Gates.
It greatly depends on which server you are playing in, at what time, in which Borderland, against which other servers, at which tower, etc etc etc.
You could have been playing at 2000 EST in your home Borderlands, what’s already fully dominated by your server, against another server that has a “primetime” of 0800 EST.
Or, you could have been in an enemy Borderland defending some tower against a small group of defenders, while in actuality the majority of the all three forces were in the Eternal Battlegrounds duking it out in a three-way, no-holds barred, cage match of epic proportions, fit with hotdog merchants and scantily-clad quaggan ring-side ladies.
I’ve used this build (Pure of Voice and Soldier’s Rune) for two months or so.
Pure of Voice will trigger first, assuming it doesn’t bug out. As to which Conditions it will affect is still a mystery. Looks like First-in-first-out, but it was always hard to be sure because I had Signet of Resolve running (and sometimes even Purity).
I use a similar build with Right-hand Strength in WvW. I’m geared with Knights armour and trinkets, with Valkyrie (Beryl) Jewels and weapons (classic Sword+Focus/Sceptre+Shield). For Runes, I’m running full Melandru’s (Toughness, -25% Condition Duration, -25% Stun Duration).
I’m fairly tanky and my main “goal” is to target a squishy at the back of the pact, Judge’s Intervention in and lay waste. When they run, as they always do, Flashing Blade serves as a gap closer. The weakness with RHS builds is the lack of AoE, meaning Shatter Mesmers are a real challenge to pin down.
Also, since somebody brought it up, the Meditation Utility Skills aren’t for direct damage. Yes, JI does nice AOE direct damage and Burn, but more importantly it’s both a Stun Breaker and gap closer and should be used as such. Similarly, Smite Conditions does about 1.5k Crit with my build, but spamming it is not ideal; instead save it for removing heavy stacks of Bleed or Confusion, Fear (with Focused Mind) or crutch Immobilise.
Finally, the teleports with Flashing Blade (900 range) and Judge’s Intervention (1200 range) are just a blast for juking enemies.
Hats off to the lone YB treb in Stonemist pounding on Ogrewatch last night (Oceanic time). Even after two resets from the wall and door upgrades, you just kept knocking.
Also, Mag’s tenacity during Oceanic time is amazing. Outmanned and able to cap Veloka, Ogrewatch and Pangloss within six minutes. Bravo.
Finally, to the bald Norn Mesmer (Sword+Pistol/Staff) from Mag, you are good. Going to have to find a solution to you.
Old culling means its back to being unplayable in large fights, especially when in the new breakout events.
I hope this all will be an old Halloween horror story we share with the young’uns after the Feb patch…
Anybody know if the Holiday PvP events will ever make it into an optional minigame, like Keg Brawl?
Also, has there been word if PvP minigames will ever allow organised play?
For the majority of my Guardian’s play time I’ve used a Shout build. It looks geared for parties and dungeons, but it works great solo too. This build allows me to venture into Orr without fear thanks to the multitude of Condition Removals (2 each shout, 3 with Virtue of Resolve) and defensive Boons (easy access to Protection, Regeneration and Vigor).
I’ve now switched to a more selfish build for WvW roaming.
Fixed bad links.

I think I’ll primarily try to farm exotics and try out dungeons. But I’ll do daily quests on my alt from now on so it gets a fair amount of level.
As for WvW, I’ve been with a guild in Yak’s Bend for about 2weeks now but I’ve transfered to Isle of Janthir recently to get a “feel” of the WvW there. I’m playing on oceanic timezone (GMT+8) and Yak’s Bend population during that time is just lonely. But the competition when there’s a lot of guild/people online is fun.
Yup, our (Isle of Janthir) Oceanic presence in WvW is pretty solid, so you won’t be disappointed.
I’m sorry that you don’t enjoy playing as a Guardian in WvW. We have a number of viable builds for various roles, but I fully understand the allure of face roll professions. But regardless, when you hit 80, whether with the Guardian or an alt, you’ll probably want to pick a build and find the perfect set of Exotic armour for him/her. This usually involves running Explorable Mode dungeons for the dungeon tokens and/or gold.
i think i’ve never noticed mine saying “hold the line”! have never wondered if others hear the same thing i do. although, i occasionally hear other characters say stuff. or i might just be hearing things :/// a lot of “faster than a centaur”, “i’m 6 feet tall”, etc etc.. aren’t those from boons from other classes as well?
at the same time, if in a party, i’ve trained to watch the boons and conditions on my allies. as well as myself. for some people, they may not be an expert at all classes or have taken the time to study other classes skills, so even if they do hear the shouts, they might not even know what they mean. whereas noticing the boons paint a picture that is just that – either you have boons, conditions or nothing.
“Hold the Line” is/was bugged and wouldn’t play its associated audio clip. Since the Lost Shores patch, my male Sylvari Guardian occasionally shouts “They shall not pass!” and “Defend this keep!” when I use the shout.
FYI,
“I can outrun a centaur!” is an (in)famous phrase used by humans when they gain Swiftness. It’s GW2’s meme if there was one.
“I fell six-feet tall!” is shouted by Asuras gaining the Might boon.
Yes, Retaliation works against AoE damage. So if an AoE hits all 5 targets with Retaliation, the attacker will receive five Retaliation “ticks”.
What are you guys think about sword like a guardian weapon? I don`t see sword like DD weapon because damage from is too low and it have only 1 skill with 15 sec CD. Also this weapon don`t have support skills. So how useful the sword for guardian and whether it is useful?
No idea what you’re talking about. Sword #1 out-damages even the Hammer and Greatsword. Doesn’t have support skills? That’s what the off-hand is for!
First of all, Power is not Might. Semantics.
Secondly, you’re arguing about a 5-point investment versus a 10-point investment. Minor.
Third and most importantly, you’re totally ignoring the Regeneration and Protection boons you receive from using Virtue of Resolve and Courage.
No. Such effects only work on Boons, i.e. Might, Swiftness, Fury, Retaliation, Regeneration, Vigor, Protection, Aegis, Stability
