The longer one plays wvw I imagine the more likely they are to stay and so ifbthe rewards are slowly gained this increases those who are seeking rewards but are primed to atleast see where a longhaul mighht take them and therefore are morelikey to stay. Ifbthe rewards were shortened I think it would all be exactly like tournaments and theyd just put the head down and suffer through it and be thankful whennit was over.
Overall I think its a great thing for the gvame mode as far as anet strategy they can keep the rewards people are complaining about rank gated and make the core happy or they can cave and let the candy seekers rush back to wherever they came from. Since the candy seekers were gonna leave anyway I think the only wrong move would be to yet again slap the wvw core in the face by showing them all that time sustainingbtheir game mode was not appreciated. I think what a wvw player is is a giant spectrum and its a slow or fast transition from candy seeking pve land to a different type of motivation thats more about team amd less about I. Soo I disagree that rewards will drastically increase core wvw players but certainly equalising a candy seekers candy seeking effort in wvw to that of a gift essentially for game mode loyalty I think is the primary arguement in those thteads. At this point, I’m getting the impression that the ones acting so high and mighty, and being willfully ignorant don’t actually care about the state of “their game mode”. They are simply filled with unnecessary grudge (this is actually worse than sPvP). This has also been becoming far more evident from map/team/squad chats in WvW since the patch.

Every single logical argument is presented with the same 2 counter points (which are filled with errors and grudge), with literally no consideration of what is actually brought up: I played for so and so years before the patch, therefore I deserve rewards and you don’t unless you play so and so years…or…people don’t need an incentive to play and start liking a game mode.

Well, you can continue on being willfully ignorant, but you’ll only be killing “your game mode”. I must thank ANet for the great job they did by stirring up a kitten storm with their effort to improve “your game mode”, that you don’t actually seem to care for – people like you, being willfully ignorant seems to only care about themselves. Well, I’m sure you’ll enjoy your dead game mode soon enough.

If they dont cave most of the pve’ers will get frustrated and leave due to the “play =shinies” memtality and those that learn to enjoy wvw might learn why wvw’ers have continued to play for 5 yrs on the same maps. Maybe they learn how zergs actually function…maybe one day they will realize why their “mindless” zerg was so effective when they discover what the acronym TS stands for…

1 day is hyperbole. It will take years to hit that and I don’t think its healthy game design to add ANY rewards that require years to accomplish. None of us know what stage in our life we will be in within the next year or two. Many players who are currently hardcore may have jobs, kids, and life activities that cause them to quit the game. Goals that take years to accomplish are a big deal. People will put more effort into this armor than many people put into getting their bachelors degree…. How is that good for a game? Make the rewards take 4-6 months for average players to attain and maybe 3-5 weeks for hardcore players. That’s a great balance that would award the hardcore players while still giving a reasonable goal to the average player who is excited about the game mode due to new cool rewards.

In some parts of the world players die at their computers while competing for rewards. In GW2 you get a free virtual butt plug for showing up in virtually every game mode. No skill is required. At least a long time gate ensures a low level of dedication is at least needed. It’s one small step above paying users to claim free rewards.

Is 5 months not enough time to dedicate towards a game mode? I think if you play for 5 months working towards something special you have earned it. That is a huge ask of new players (which is ok). If someone sees someone in Lions Arch using that armor they might say, “woa… cool armor, how do I get it?!”. They will then learn they need to dedicate 4-6 months of their game time working on it. They then go into the game mode as its a long term reward, but reasonable to assume they can attain it. Maybe that person sticks around in the game mode. As it stands now, players who were hardcore from day 1 can have it but it will most likely make new people straight up quit. People have been admitting that there are no cool unique rewards for WvW until now. However, with the requirements as are, there are still no cool unique rewards for people that have not been playing WvW since 2012. That is other than the back piece. I think thats fairly attainable within a 6-month time frame which feels good. I am looking forward to making it myself.

I think people would prefer the response “This armor cant be achieved by a pve’er. Even if you try to grind for this armor the grind would kill you. The only way to get this armor is to eat,sleep,and breath wvw, make hundreds of thousands of your opponents die for their server to satisfy your drive to crush any who would stand in your way of total dominion over the mists. The only way to get this armor is to realize there is only wvw.”

Maybe you werent meant to get it…maybe its not for you to have. I feel like the wvwers are mostly happy for the first time in 5yrs and then all these pve’ers are trying to rain on the parade for fashion wars. I still havent even logged in because I know its going to be a kittenshow until the pveers get discouraged. The ppl that enjoybthe game mode will stay..net positive for wvw. Ifbthey make it attainable for casual pve,ers these god aweful ques and crapmanders will never go away.

Even the useless zergling is “participating” even if he is just a supply bag and a aoe damage reducer. I would agree about eotm. I’m of the same mind as alot of wvw’ers that eotm isnt wvw and shouldnt have the same rewards.

As far as eotm theree was a time when plat and mith ranks were only obtainable in eotm so kinda tagged them as fake wvwers but most excellent cimmanders gotnover 2k the wvw way.

As a commander I understand how important roamers are or can be but there are different types and honestly I don’t know how a system would distinguish between wvw useful roamers and less useful ones. If you are a roamer taking and defending camps your going to get a decent amount of wxp. If yer just stealthed waiting to pick off a lone zergling with a cheese ghost tief build in a dark alley or a dueler I would expect your wvw participation would be less. Anet built the game mode for larger scale fights so that’s what they geared it for. I could see rewarding exp based on percentage of damage but then zerglings would complain. So no way to make everyone happy in every game mode. If you wanna roam and earn rewards join a squad and let the tag know you are roaming so they can give you that special participation status so you get a percentage of what the zerg is getting? Or play spvp/PvP for your 1 on 1 kicks. I get the whole "I wanna play the way I wanna play " but we can’t expect accommodation down to all specs. People with high wvw ranks have been begging have some meaning beyond kitten for their wvw efforts and 2k is fine for a wvw’er and i think it should be something pve’ers are likely never to obtain. Those lone roamers doing thoer own thing in a game mode that is designed to award team work and objective based participation prolly unlikely to get it also I think fits with the game mode.

Dont Link top 3 servers. Gold
Servers 4 – 15 are paired highest with lowest. Silver
Servers 16 – 24 are paired highest with lowest. Bronze

Continue to assign glicko to all servers in the matchup equally. This allows servers to fight their way up to name recognition I guess.

Reeval every month.

So I think this will keep small servers feeling relevant and also creates a tiers of different play dynamics. Also lets the top servers fight on even terms.

Let me clarify another point. In 3 months there will be another linking. If we don’t voice our concerns now during the first 3 months, then Anet is going to feel that everybody is happy with the change and it could turn out worse for us.

We don’t want to just wait for the polls to roll around for our opinions. We need to let them know from beginning to end. Many views may change in time. Opinions may differ from start to finish. I may even grow to like the “Blob” mentality (doubtful but I never thought I’d like Sushi either) It’ll be a good way for them to gauge the response over time as well.
So it’s not so much that we are coming to the forums and voicing in anger, we are just making sure that we are heard and not drowned out or forgotten that we are in disagreement.

Betas need feedback. We will oblige :-)

Thank you Daemonne; took the words out of my mouth. Our server has been discussing these issues non-stop since Friday, and we intend to bring thoughtful feedback to the forums throughout the beta.

It’s been said elsewhere, but again – I think linking between the lower tiers could be a solution and bring a nice spread of playstyles (plus, I’m growing very fond of some of our long-time rival servers and guilds via these discussions!)

Fire to Air keep now takes less than 2 min. I used to just say kitten it..let it burn i have a better way to spend the next 15 min of my wvw time than maneuvering through bs just to watch a group capping it.

Ty for removing alot of the mazes and zig zag bs. Still more to do but its a great start.

Ty for removing barricades. Those were just annoying.

Towers are still meaningless beyond ppt. They hold,no strategic value. They dont threaten nearby objectives.

Even 5 dudes dueling osnt upsetting q. As a commander if they are in my way they just end up dead. There is no sacred dueling space and if ppl try to make one it doesnt affect whether I roll through that area or not. shrug

HoD and Eb didnt have any problems I know of. Eb commanders were leading HoDdies just like Ebs. They made us an icon in their ts and permissions for wvw channels and the same was done on HoD ts for Ebays.

However…It would be nice to know your linking partner before reset if its going to change because atleast you could do alot of the coordination beforehand rather than on reset.

Also so me good points as far as small scale…maybe just let AR, ET, and DR hang in their own tier 5. So t1 has no linkings, and t5 have no linkings. Everyone in the t2-t4 gets paired. This will make t1 a more constant struggle I think and keep glicko more volitile at the top and allow servers that pop up to kitten face off on even single server terms. Also if ppl want to have small scale wvw in t5 they can do that.

So they said it was easy lunk and unlink worlds so this might be a good solution…simply dont link top 3 and bottom 3, let them have their own tiers.

People have been complaining about server population for litterally years and now something is done and ppl are complaining about how they liked their small communities. We cant have it both ways. You cant enjoy small communities and wish wvw wasnt dead.

Basically extinction of small server communities was inevitable. The writing has been on the wall for years. Why keep servers going if their communities dont care enough to populate wvw?

My only advice to small population servers is learn to command large groups, go stake your claim in a bl, carve out your corner of the world and call for help if needed. There are small scale fights, tasks, and wven roaming will re emerge. I would just ask we give this sometime to get better but as far as small server identities we just have to accept their demise…or I mean down sizing…

Lol guys you just are getting bored of the vanilla. Yall need to join a guild that uses ts and you need to run a profession that has a critical skill like water or mightvfor starters. If your a commander learn to use ts to your advantage. Commanders are leaders, goir job is to motivate, rally, and succeed. People are naturally lazy, mon commital, easily demoralizes, and happy to sit in the background. If you want to motivate people you have to bebthe opposite. Your job as a tag is to make the game fun and people will follow. Treating wvw like a job is the opposite of fun so you arent going to motivate anyone by appealing to their sense of reaponsibility.

I pugmanded for years…Lead a wvw guild…lead a gvg guild. I say that I love pugs and I hate pugs. Commanding I will thank scouts, and despite having large groups in TS I’ll throw a few words in say chat if I see the future. It does go both ways. I wont ever apologize for not typemanding to the pugs though. The game has changed. Once upon a time pugmanding was typemanding and that was pretty common. Then guilds and groups started using comms all the time. Then guilds became the hard centers of pug zergs and the age of the typemander has mostly come to an end. As a commander from day one we simply had to keep pace, stay sharp and relevant lest we lose the ability to be effective at what makes a lot of fun. So…its really been an evolution and in most cases that is being in TS and being a well-oiled machine. Most good commanders will modify their style based on what the situation calls for. If I have 20 ppl in TS and there is another tag on map who is pugmanding he’s going to be minding the map and Ill primarily be fighting. The reverse also happens. Commanders should be able to switch as needed. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer willing to typemand or pugmand these days. The benefit of having a trained guild is obvious but you can’t run them 24/7. Pugmanding you can do 24/7 and as a result I would say its the pug tags and the loveable pugs that follow them that make up the real back-bone of a server. A guild’s contribution only lasts as long as the raid but pugs contribute 24/7.

So why is the non-guilded pugmander dieing out on a lot of servers? Mostly I have found that pugs would rather follow organized guild groups than a pugmander. So you can imagine how a pugmander might feel betrayed.

So who’s to blame for the state of pugs? Their image as unloyal, untrustworthy, and unskilled? That’s all rather complicated I think and as ArchonWing pointed out there are plenty of ways to look at it.

Guild commanders will always sacrifice pugs for their guildies. Pugs will sacrifice the zerg for bags and Pugmanders will sacrifice whats needed to succeed.

First off. New maps are great, beautiful, and alot of fun. But there are some problems with sze and balance. Ive spoken with alot of wvw commanders and guild leaders.

Looking for relatively simple ways to fix wvw.

Current problems as I see them.

They are all inter-related and mainly they have to do with motivation. Some assumptions:

1. WvW’ers want kills, wins, bags, and loot. Non-wvwers just want the loot.

2. You made changes to wvw to give us something fun and new and you tried to address balance issues with autoupgrades and scaling lords. Excellent work.

Problems as I see:

1. People are nolonger needed to upgrade things. Great we save money…really bad….good morning every single objective is owned by the enemy server and is t3. People pop in…attempt a few fortified gates with 10 ppl..20 min later on the lord and are destroyed by dominating enemy zerg which could have RP walked from anywhere to defend.

2. Big zergs got bigger. Because the upgrading tgat used to keep ppl busy nolonger important its unnecessary.

3. Towers hold no strategic advantage. They cant be used to assault another structure..

I humbly urge you to please consider the following:

People need to invest something to upgrade structures…should be labor if not money…but something should have to be required AND it needs to be scaled to make the momentarily less populated server able to do it with less time/resources. If noone is paying attention to the objective autoupgrades should practically stop.

The rewards need to scale with the difficulty. You did great work with the lords but enemy players need to bevthe real concern. Defended objectives, defended maps need to be worth more. You already monitor the population on maps, pls use it to scale the rewards. This is a truly natural way to instill value beyond the arbitrary point system.

Towers should have a strategic advantage pls add some kind of a weapon that can be built in towers that can hit enemy keeps. Give us a reason to care that the enemy took it.

You cant shrink the map…increase player speed out of combat pls. Add free to anyone teleporters at equidistant locations.

And I havent heard anyone say they like the giant lazer…remove maybe add interesting battlefield element to the center.

I really do love the maps…they just need some tweeks.

Anyone else have SIMPLE ways to do it.?

I x-ferred one year ago from mag. I cant imagine going anywhere else. HoD has a solid foundation, a core group that comes out to fight no-matter the odds. Despite the conditions we wont roll over, its just how the server is and its inspiring. If yer a bandwagon guild…you know who you are…HoD’s not for you.

HoD also cures incontinence, impotence, and Cancer:)

Just hide the score/hide the tick.

This will not help with the big coverage/night capping issues, but it will help immensely with the #1 and #3 servers focusing the #2 sever issue.

It will also be better for morale.

I’m so glad that this discussion is finally taking place, however I am a little concerned about the idea of splitting the day into chunks with a server being able to “win” a chunk of the day. You can never really predict when certain servers will be active and it just seems like there could be plenty of problems with such a system.

I’m wondering what the result would be if we simply went with this:

1. You get points for taking an objective (more points if it’s upgraded)
2. You get points for defending an objective (less points if it’s upgraded)
3. You DO NOT get points for holding an objective
4. You get points for upgrading an objective

This would result in a servers points only going up when they have people playing and nobody can earn a massive amount of points for passively owning something.

This system would only require a rebalance of the point system. I’m sure Anet could monitor a few server matchups and come up with something.

As a general comment….Ancient warfare generally did involve blobs, granted many were more organized than that but, blobs none the less. That seems to be the genreal era, maybe renessaincish (also blob-like armies).

Geurilla warfare really only became a serious tactic with the invention of guns (which are far more deadly in realife than in Gw2, where my rifle bullets are made out of rubber apparently) and high explosives. If we had weapons like that, one shot = kills entire zerg, yer kitten right there’d be little sneaky groups and alot less zergs.

BUT, thats not the case.

if you remove PPT entirely, there is no winners, and no losers. Your server gets rewards based on total points earned. make the points simple like this example:
1 point: Camp or tower taken, bloodlust capped or stopped
2 points: Tower defended, keep Waypointed
3 points: Keep or SMC taken
4 points: Keep defended
5 points: SMC defended
At the end of the match, you can receive tokens based on your overall score for your server, which you can spend on rewards (ascended rings, infusions, weapons etc.) make the weapons at the citadel reliant on these tokens AND Badges of honor (not gold)
The amount of tokens could also be adjusted based on time played in WvW, say 1 hour equals 5% received, 20 hours 100%.

I agree with alot of it..except for those that say everything is fine.

Scaling PPT Based on Challenge…Awesome.
So…modifying PPT total added to score based on the ratio of each server wvw population. The more you outnumber the enemy servers the less PPT you make. makes sense even in reality. Getting a PPT Capture bonus for taking upgraded structures..good idea…its a one-time thing, incentivices challenge and decreases karma train tendancy. PPT for kills, outnumbered kills, PPT only for outnumbered servers…ect all incentivises warfare and continuing to push even when the chips are down. I love it. Some EOTM elements added, that give outnumbered serves an easier time taking back stuff such as super powerful NPCs or home keep buffs are great ideas. Anything that can incentivise demoralized/outnumbered players and bring em back to the fight is awesome…Why can players get Rewards based on their score contributions, scaled by match difficulty (pop ratios) and placing? Removing the downed state I think is unneccessary (but I generally play an Elementalist) but Im biased. Lotta ele haters out there. Alt-F4ing as a form of scoring by denying enemy points should simply be turned around as someone mentioned (Alt-f4 in downed state = points for opposing servers)If there is rallying issue, I would just remove the rallying, doesnt make sense anyway. Alot of SIMPLE SOLUTIONS which is awesome. Simple mathematical solutions like score scaling is REALLY easy to do. I might be excited to play WvW again if alot of these things take effect. Gotta play to the appeal of the losing servers if you wanna keep WvW alive.

Solution to fix the population imbalance

To be viable, any population-based handicapping:

  1. Must react quickly to upward population shifts but slowly to downward population shifts to reduce the benefit of quickly abandoning a map or WvW or rapidly surging into a map on WvW. In the past, I’ve recommended calculating a server’s WvW strength as a 1 hour rolling average (average population for the last hour) or current population, whichever is greater across all of WvW.

Yep, using Moving Average…I suggested that it be taken at a random time-point between ticks.

  1. Must never make it more beneficial to for players to leave WvW and let opponents rampage less impeded instead of staying in WvW and fighting to slow them down. This likely means a handicap that provides a partial benefit to the weaker opponent but does not entirely erase the disadvantage. This likely also means retaining some benefit to PvDoor so that an abandoned map remains beneficial to control.

Agreed, Scaling rewards and PPT does this. If plpa re ona lower population sever they will always get a MF, Drop rate, and WxP bonus in WVW. IN a matchup if they are seriously outnumbered the PPT increase for heir capture points would scale possible to +20%, and the opposing server at -20%. Also these could be easily adjusted post implementation. This also mean more ppl in lower tier servers will come out to play WvW:)

  1. Must be gradual rather than having sharp tipping points, so that the presence or absence of one player never makes a huge difference and changes the game significantly.

Moving Average

  1. Will likely need to include incentives to make the players on the underdog server(s) show up and play even when they are outnumbered and have trouble winning.

It’s possible that part of the answer to getting the population to spread out and to get people into WvW on low population servers is it base the in game rewards, the loot and chances for ascended gear and precursors, on effort such that one gets noticeably better drops for a desperate fight against a more numerous opponent than one gets being on a more populated server getting an easy win.
