Gorseval DPS "checks"...

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

No it’s not a boring mechanic. It’s actually quite exciting.

But I do agree that we need some way to measure performance. I was working on Gore last night and we had a couple of times early on where we didn’t hit the first damage check. It was a bit frustrating because there’s no way of knowing why. Sure people getting hit by slam is one thing but it’s not the whole picture.

People don’t know what they don’t know. If they are executing a sub optimal rotation they probably don’t know it and they will say that they are doing great. It’s not their fault they can’t accurately get feedback as to how well they are doing in the game. We NEED some way of judging performance. Just looking through combat log doesn’t do the trick.

We can do just about anything except be a dedicated healer although Blood Magic traits are still pretty great to have.

Damage is good with Valk gear, Condi is pretty comparable to Engineer and we can tank very well with a few pieces of toughness gear.

I know that buyers are dumb as hell but they would never spend 1000g especially since the rewards are once again terrible 100g at most and I imagine unless its a repeated farm for the sellers it would be really inefficient waiting it out, splitting with 9 people sounds really fun. 1000g is definitely not happening, people that can throw away money like that would have looked at the rewards beforehand and determined it was a bad investment.

1000g for a very small percentage progression towards legendary armour no thanks

I’m sure there are some out there that are willing.

There were people in other MMO’s that are willing to pay ridiculous prices to get carried through content there will be some here as well. I’ve no idea exactly how much groups are advertising this for but I’m sure it’s well over 100g. It’s not so much about gold/rewards but rather is it worth it for 9 people to carry one person for 1-2 hours of content. Considering you can make roughly 10g/hour in SW 9 individuals would actually lose money if they charged 100g for a raid carry.

It’s probably not worth it though. Unlike dungeons were. To carry someone and make the raid harder I’d want to ask at least 5 gold per player there. But thats prolly me being not greedy enough so expect 10 gold or about 90-100 gold for a spot.

Pretty unlikely it’s going for that cheap. Considering there’s very very few groups that have cleared the raid right now I think it’d be close to 1000g for a full raid carry. 90-100g MIGHT get you a Vale Guardian kill.

Right now it’s all hearsay and wildly inaccurate or based on speadsheet math which fails to simulate real raid conditions.

Raid Difficulty Causing Cookie Cutter Specs

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Pandabro.8743

Pandabro.8743

Raid difficulty doesn’t cause cookie cutter specs. In fact it does the opposite. It encourages people to try new things to overcome obstacles.

What encourages cookie cutter specs is the stupidly high price on ascended gear. People don’t want to invest in a potentially bad spec so it’s safer to just do what they’ve known to be good.

Raid Modes Suggestion

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Pandabro.8743

Pandabro.8743

Well here we go…

The whole splitting raid difficulties debate and if it’s good or not.

IMO it damages the experience of raids. WoW has four different difficulties of raids and finally killing a difficult boss in Mythic feels much less exciting because you’ve already done it three other times by that point. It’s also exhausting. Often times you feel forced to clear multiple raids on multiple characters to maximize your rewards.

I get that people want to see content but raids should have one difficulty and possibly make hard modes through Achievements. Maybe they can make story instances in the future of raids that people can buy with gems that allow you to go through a solo tuned version of the raids to experience the story. I dread the day that raids have four difficulties though.

The near future of raids

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Pandabro.8743

Pandabro.8743

Two reasons why really challenging elite content works:

- Twitch and streaming viewable content
- Giving players something to aspire to

Before raids this game had zero PVE content that was worth watching simply because there’s nothing people can’t log in and just do themselves. Now you see hundreds of people watching PVE streams, because there’s things they want to see that they can’t actually do themselves yet.

A large majority of players have a psychological need to aspire to something in games. Even in physical sports, amateur players usually have some sort of hero that they aspire to be who plays in the big leagues. They continue to play despite knowing deep down that they probably will never be at that level (Or maybe one day they will). This is what raids should be for GW2 players. The dream to aspire to and hopefully one day achieve.

For those reasons it’s well worth developing content for the top 5-10% (It might be 1% content now but it’ll certainly open up as tactics and builds develop and the player base learns).

Fake Difficulty?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Pandabro.8743

The jungle has very little of this artificial difficulty you’re speaking of. It’s mostly just difficult. Mobs do hit hard but usually have strong tells to warn you. Snipers put targets over your heads, Arrowheads make obvious attack patterns, Smokescales say exactly what they do in the description. Pretty much everything will kill you once or twice and after that it’s shame on you for dying to them.

I have rarely felt that my death was out of my control since roaming around the jungle. Running through mobs I have to think about what kind of mob they are and if they will actually kill me. It forces me to sometimes clear mobs instead of just auto walking from one waypoint to another.

Raids and kicking to make room for a guildie.

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Pandabro.8743

The first time you kill each raid boss in a week, you’ll receive access to the boss chest, which contains the boss’s loot. This chest can only be earned the first time you kill the boss each week and will award experience, gold, rare and exotic items, and a chance at ascended gear and unique boss rewards.

I don’t think there’s a final zone completion reward so I don’t seeing this being an issue. If they kick you out to bring in a guild member that’s their prerogative. They will still have to kill bosses with that player for that player to get rewards. Anything you kill with that group you’d get rewards for too.

Pandabro.8743

I always see tons of people in the new zones. You just have to use LFG and use a taxi.

This. There are lots of people in HoT. The problem is Anet has, for whatever reason, been unable to tweak their megaserver algorithm to get those people into the same map instances together. The new maps, on the whole are hopping, but each individual map instance is dead.

This… I know they said they knew there was an issue with the megaservers but it seems like it’s still not really fixed yet. I know there are tons of people there because I look at guild rosters and I see 1/2 to 3/4 of the people in HoT maps. That means there are people there just spread across too many maps.

It’s pretty easy to get your entire elite spec mostly solo from just the first two maps. If I find a hard one I usually just map chat or wait a minute or two for someone to else to show up. It doesn’t take too long.

The real issue is it’s a bit of a struggle to find maps doing the meta events.

To summarize he basically says that he’s been playing for long hours for four days and he still has a whole list of things that he hasn’t done that he still wants to do. These are not small things either like minor achievements or collections, these are big features that were added.

IMO I don’t believe there is an MMO out there that has as much relevant content as HoT does. As a semi-casual player (who works full time) I cannot foresee myself running out of stuff to do for over a year and that’s not including the fact that raids will be coming soon and I will want to run those.

Are the Meta events too hard?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Pandabro.8743

Pandabro.8743

Meta events should have a wide range of difficulty. Some should be easy and always doable (Like SW) and some should be very challenging (Like Triple Trouble).

To be fair, 2-3 people cannot screw up any of these events. The damage thresholds are too large for people just randomly doing damage to screw it up that much. Now if a dozen or more people are doing their own thing there’s a chance you could fail, which is probably how it should be.

We are also not even a week into the expansion. I have a feeling in a month you’ll see random maps farming most of these meta events (hopefully one or two of them won’t be easily doable by completely random maps).

While I’ve no solid proof I think we’ll see a report somewhere after the end of the year saying that the combination of F2P and HoT release has been a resounding success.

If you think there was no spike in players on launch day you are a fool. Even if the players decided they didn’t like it and never touched it again there was still a huge spike in on their servers and they handled it exceptionally well. They’ve spoken about some issues with the megaservers not allow enough people into maps.

Say I only have 20 minutes to log on one day and I want to do all the adventures that I have done gold for. If half or more of those adventures are locked my entire plan is out the window as I just straight up don’t have time to sit around waiting for event after event.

Then you should realize that MMO is not the kind of game for you at that moment. Each time of game have different length of play period and 20min isn’t for MMO.

Sometimes I play for 4-5 hours at a time, but some days I just don’t have the same amount of time and I’d like to be able to get something done. Adventures fit into this perfectly but they are constantly gated which feels terrible during those times when I do only have a few minutes to log in.

Committing anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour of time to try to unlock an activity that takes a couple minutes is straight up stupid. I’m not entirely against the adventures needed to occasionally be liberated through an event but having an entire chain is ridiculous.

A chain of events locking Adventures is a really bad idea. It means that it could be 30+ minutes before you even unlock the thing you logged on to do. If it was a singular event locking the adventure that was really obvious that’d be completely fine but I should have to spend a ton of time unlocking the Adventure when what I wanted to do was that one thing.

Say I only have 20 minutes to log on one day and I want to do all the adventures that I have done gold for. If half or more of those adventures are locked my entire plan is out the window as I just straight up don’t have time to sit around waiting for event after event.

If you have the expectation that you will be able to access everything right away you’ll be disappointed.

If you enjoyed dungeons in GW2 you’ll probably be disappointed.

So I really like adventures they are nice quick challenges that give a small reward every day. When I don’t have my friends on I love to do adventures but I’m running into a problem where they seem to be locked almost 80% of the time and it’s not clear at what point you unlock them.

Yesterday I wanted to do the flame thrower adventure and I noticed it was locked, so I ran over to the nearest event, which was to drive the Mordrem from the beginning area. Assisted with that, the pact troops moved out and secured the area but the Adventure remained locked with no way of knowing when it’d become unlocked or what events needed to be done to unlock it.

It’s rather frustrating to log in for an hour and plan on doing 3-4 adventures across maps and have them ALL be locked.

I’m foregoing shouts for Blood is Power. With Staff or Dagger 4 you can transfer conditions off of yourself immediately after you cast Blood is Power resulting in about 10k more damage on your target. Sigil could be a flexible spot, could be switch out for Epidemic if there is more than one target.

I think the real key for the build is getting down a Poison Field and Shroud 4 to get enormous stack of Poison.

I don’t really think might stacking is our strong suite, we shouldn’t be investing heavily into it. We can’t spread it to anyone else so it’s best to have other classes cover that area and have us try to maximize our damage.

I feel like I had the opposite experience. Dungeons in this game are just weird… The first dungeon I ran was AC story mode at level 30 and it was a complete disaster. We’d no idea what was happening everything had way too much HP and hit ridiculously hard for a starting dungeon.

Didn’t touch dungeons again till I was 80. At that point they were still a very odd experience. Skipping these mobs and those mobs. Stacking in corners and just spam AOEing things down. Never felt right.

To this day dungeons in this game seem to be a complete failure in my eyes. I do fractals every once in a while but dungeons are just not something that is fun and farming dungeons is even less fun. I had high hopes when I started playing the game, the combat system seemed to lend itself to some great dungeons but it just didn’t pan out at all.

Raids are for HC-Players | need DPSTool

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Pandabro.8743

At the end of the raid, the leader looks at the logs (with all of the info you’ve provided). They see that:

a. I did considerably more damage
b. You let might stacks drop off (even though you had no choice)
c. Your fury uptime was around 70 percent while mine was 100.
d. You took more damage/less healing because you were away from the protective boons of the party.

In this example, you were much more valuable to the raid group than I was, but the numbers show the exact opposite. You are removed from the raid while I (the person that ignored all mechanics and just focused on getting high numbers on the meter) get to stay – meaning the group is going to continue wiping.

The point is there are too many factors that make the raw data basically unusable – if not downright deceiving.

Add to this the general toxicity that we historically see with these tools (and it is really bad, trust me), and adding meters to the game is just a horrible idea.

I don’t know what damage meters in other games you’ve been using but generally it’s very easy to see if people are training the wrong mobs. Usually you can check, with in game damage meters, who did how much damage to what mobs. Additionally it’s pretty easy to see in game when people switch to another mob.

The gist of your argument seems to be that:

Bad raid leaders will make poor decisions by not understanding how fights work and use damage meters to justify kicking players from their raids.

Yes that will happen, but it’ll happen regardless of damage meters. If the group hits that point where they are executing mechanics but the boss isn’t dying then something needs to change and raid leaders will start looking to figure out what it is.

The difference is without the tools they need even good raid leaders can make poor decisions because they have nothing but speculation to base their decisions off of.

Raids are for HC-Players | need DPSTool

Pandabro.8743

I started high end progression level raiding in 2006 – and leading those 10 and 25 man raids around 2008. In most cases, when I was raiding as a DPS, I topped the dps charts or came very close (but never linked those charts in chat).

I can say with 100% confidence that, in that time, almost nothing – not even shared loot tables – provided the level of drama and hate in a group as dps meters. Even when groups downed bosses easily, someone always felt the need to call out the lower numbers in the group. It is just the nature of many MMO players to hunt down and belittle those they feel aren’t pulling their weight (even when they are).

Would DPS meters be useful? Sure. Are they worth the drama and hate? Definitely not.

So how do you see it going when a guild cannot get a boss down because of an enrage?

In my opinion the drama and hate will be no less, it’ll just be less informed. Wiping is frustrating enough as it is and blame will come down on someone, it way less likely that the person(s) causing the wipes will get blamed if we don’t have tools too gauge performance. It’ll come down on those who play a “sub optimal” build or those playing “inferior” classes, even though we’ll have no idea if those people are actually doing their job or not. It’ll be entirely speculation.

The lack of damage meters won’t cure toxicity in a highly competitive environment where you have multiple people working towards a goal. It WILL let good raid leaders make informed decisions about how to address issues though.

OMG i can’t support this enough.
The UI needs not only DPS/Healing/Buff monitoring tools but also things like MUCH better player and enemy health monitoring, a more robust target frame in general and (I know i’ll take a raft of abuse for this) CAST BARS!
I mean lets be honest, how often can you actually see an enemies “tell” animations through the constant cloud of particle effects?
IMHO These are ESSENTIAL tools for high level content designed around team dynamics.
At this point, if we are finally getting raids, i don’t even consider these tools as option as optional, but essential.

Cast bars kind of go against the very core principle of the combat system. A better solution is to reduce the particle effects so that we can actually see boss tells. Overall it’ll be a better experience that cast bars as it’ll force people to actually look at the boss often.

Damage meters are another story and I’m in full support of them as I see them being 100% necessary for raiding. Will there be discrimination/toxicity based on them? Absolutely but any high competition game modes has toxicity because of it’s sheer nature. The same toxic scenarios happen without damage meters just in a lot less informed ways.
