Yeah i’m not having high expectation that Reaper will be thing that finally makes us desireble in dungeons.
I mean, #1 it’s slow as hell #2 it has a frickin chill on it’s auto attack, perma chillling + massive damage isn’t exactly balanced unless i’m missing something #3 I don’t know what gear they were using in the PoI showcase but the damage seemed rather low
It’s such a shame they have PvE on such a low priority. Necros and Rangers have been treated like lepers for dungeon running since day 1 and the holy trinity of Guardian, Warrior and Ele just keep getting stronger.
And it’s been like this for 3 years! Seriously Anet, what the kitten…
The design is quite nice but there’s just no way in hell i want that thing on my character. I think i’m among the minority who can’t stand all the silly legendaries like twilight and back pieces with wings and what not.
I’d like more stylish stuff that isn’t so kitten over the top and gaudy. Like what about a cape?
What the hell is wrong with you? I’d kill her just because of her obnoxious personality alone!
This has been a problem for 3 years, it used to be even worse iirc. Just be glad you aren’t a Necro, half the time their minions will just stand there and do nothing
Yes! This!
I saw the mecha devourer in SW and was like “I need this!”
Bolbo’s theory works, but they killed Snaff, so why wouldn’t they Kill Eir? It’s either Eir or Trahearne, who would you rather?
Uhh.. is that a joke? Trahearne.. duh
Well you wrote “won’t survive Arah or high lvl fractals” which is what i reacted to, and it is perfectly viable to clear them without much trouble.
But no you won’t do better than the standard meta team. Guardians, Warriors and Eles are just too frickin strong beacuse Anet somehow think it’s balanced to give the some of the highest damage dealers the best support because reasons.
In short, “no”, because Ice Bow 4*4 with Might and Fury stacking more than outdamages both Well of Suffering and Well of Corruption combined.
Plus, the Necros can’t just skip mobs.
I forgot about Ice Bow oops. That thing is OP, can’t believe they’re not nerfing it.
But what’s this about not being able to skip mobs? I always just run past them without any problems.
Cause you had friends with stab/protection/swiftness/vigor shared
No usually I just run through without boons. I join pugs regardless of the party comp so we don’t always have guardians or thieves to make running easier. I just dodge stuff.
I mean I even solo the scepter piece gathering on Hodgins’ path in AC without bothering to bring any stability or stun breaks on my necro.
If you think boons are required for running past mobs you have a lot to learn.
AC? man that instance can be done by 5 lvl 60 rangers quickly.Im talking about ARah and high level fractals,w/o stability, swiftness and protection or reflect, you wont survive a bit.
Please, you can do it just fine. It won’t go as fast and it won’t be as faceroll as an optimized group but you won’t have any serious problems.
People of all classes managed to solo Lupi back when i played before, you don’t need to one shot him with a reflect or skip 80% of the content with a thief to be able to beat the dungeon.
You know what i’d like? Zombies.
There are loads of risen models of various races, why can’t “Rise!” give you a risen version of whatever mob/player was killed? In the event that there is no risen model there can be a generic construct or maybe a shadowfiend.
I’m sick of the constructs, give us something new!
Speaking of GW1, this was QZ in GW1 http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Quickening_Zephyr
Why can’t the GW2 version give party quickness? It irritates me that the class is in desperate need of some group utility and they give Guardians a group quickness on a 30(!!!!)second cooldown, beacuse they were obviously lacking in groupsupport…
Seriously, Rangers and Necros were at the kitten end of the stick when i stopped playing alittle more than a year ago and it’s just sad that hasn’t improved much.
Yeah, improvements have been made but same goes for the classes that have been the golden boys for almost 3years now getting us nowhere.
As far as PvE is concerned anyway.
Bad in this game( and mmo’s in general i supouse) means “not the best” most of the time. All the classes do OK in PvE dungeons, it’s just that Warriors, Thieves, Guarians and Eles are just much better when it comes to dungeons. Their damage is higher and they all have way better utility.
Necro’s have some neat tricks but nothing that compares, but that doesen’t mean they can’t do well in dungeons. I recently had a smooth run of Fractal 47(Well until it bugged out) with 2 necros, a ranger an engi and a warrior.
The player> the class, every time.
Jumping around attunements is a big part why Eles are so fun for me,so locking yourself out one for 20s dosen’t seem all that great to me.
Will have to see it in action but not super impressed.
Dunno if they’ll be unique to Druids but it’s likely they’ll add new ones, i heard rumors of raptors and rockdogs but who knows.
I also have a feeling Druids will get a spell to “posses” their pet, because you know, druids.
Or something simillar, would be cool atleast.
Also the gameplay dosen’t really synch up with he story. What i mean is gameplay wise he’s utterly useless and lies dead on the ground 90% of the time while you do all the work, but storywise everyone thinks he’s amazing because reasons.
Hating Trahearne for this is stupid.
Even Destiny’s Edge, the most epic heroes of GW2’s time, lie dead in the dirt 90% of the time.
EVERY SINGLE ALLIED NPC IN THE GAME EVERYWHERE is made so abysmally weak, just to make our PC feel all the more epic. Trahearne has no uniqueness to this.
This changed slightly with story relevant NPCs in Season 2, but only in that they’re all now immortal (this includes Trahearne!), but the damage they do is so little damage that you can pull a simple ambient rabbit to them and afk for ten hours for the rabbit to still be above half health when you get back – and the NPCs at 1% health for eternity.
What you quoted was me explaining what makes him even WORSE than what i wrote in my first sentence, and a general problem when characters we’re supousedto like are nothing but dead weights at best, annoyance that breaks the quest/dungeon at worst.
Not ever did i write that this is something unique to Traherne ever.
And yes DE are worthless, and i think that is absolutely kittened aswell i also think that it damages the perception of the members of Destinies Edge even more beyond the cringe worthy juvenile BS we have to sit through during story dungeons.
If you can’t tell, i’m not really a fan of the DE characters either.
Hell it damages the new characters as well and most of the time having them along is nothing but a chore. Hell they’re annoying even if they are immortal, i just did the part in Glints Cave and Majory or whatever her name is was at best useless and kittened and at worst made it harder for me when she decided it was time to hit the vortex crystal for no kittening reason.
I think players perception of these characters would warm up alot if they actually helped players and were useful in one way or another.
Just look at Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite, you can’t help but get attatched to that character simply because she is so helpful.
I think Anet need to come up with a way how the characters could help the player, say with buffs or if they actually did damage and they could bump up the difficulty or HP to compensate. Maybe they could save the player from death once their HP reached a certain ammount once every X seconds/minutes. Hell anything else than the mobile doorstops they are now.
As someone who only likes Dagger MH on the Ele. I am dissapoint….
The Horn and new utilities might turn out great but i was really looking forward to another melee weapon on the Ele.
He’s dull as dirt, his dialogue stinks and his VO is even worse.
Also the gameplay dosen’t really synch up with he story. What i mean is gameplay wise he’s utterly useless and lies dead on the ground 90% of the time while you do all the work, but storywise everyone thinks he’s amazing because reasons.
He’s just forced down your throat at the end of the first half of the story and I just feel he hasn’t earned any of the status he’s supousedto have, which makes me hate him even more.
Do they? I’m super happy with my ranger, they haven’t been this good since beta and back then they were OP as kitten.
Constantly evading GS crits for 4k with 100% QZ and stability ftw.
My pets have been dying left and right in pvp lately but i’m not to broken up about it tbh.
We’re just not as reliant on them anymore thank god, so i think it’s fine.
Like the others said, Asura. But that will only be useful in one game mode.
But Charr have Battle Roar which is pretty much “For Great Justice” lite. Which is nice.
And Norn racial elites have some decent utility like stealth unless they nerfed them.
Honestly besides Asura in WwW you’ll probably prefer your class skills and elites. Better to roll a race you just like looking at. And that should be Charr.
If it isn’t Charr, well, you’re wrong.
The worst thing is, as a new pvp’er, is that they are just plain confusing. I had trouble with glasscannon thieves in the beginning too but it’s so much easier to come up with something to deal with them.
Mesmers? I have no kittening idea because i have no idea what’s going on thanks to the very nature of the class. This is how the average fight with a mesmer goes for me:
A wild mesmer appears. “Stuff” happens. I’m dead in 2 seconds. And it’s not just one build that messes me up, the confusion spamming ones just destroy me aswell and i have even less of an idea what the hell it’s going on.
It makes losing to them all the more frustrating because i have no idea what to do.Rampage and Lichform kicks my butt aswell but atleast those are elites and i know where it’s coming from!
Why are you here wasting time QQing instead of making a mesmer to learn the class and ultimately learn how to counter it?
lmao, “wasting time”. People like you just make me laugh. Spending what little free time i have playing a class i have no interest in playing only so i can “git gud” at a kittening video game, now THAT would be a colossal waste of time.
Besides, all the other classes don’t require you to roll them only to figure them out.
I also have no interest in joining the fotm Mesmer zerg that is the hotjoin atm which speaks volumes of the state of the class atm.
No, i’m giving some feedback from a newbie perspective while checking my e-mail, that’s it.
Why are you wasting time getting salty at random strangers, whining about whining over a class that’s obviously over-tuned atm?
The worst thing is, as a new pvp’er, is that they are just plain confusing. I had trouble with glasscannon thieves in the beginning too but it’s so much easier to come up with something to deal with them.

Nope, honestly i’ve never ever used it, ever, so didn’t really bother me.
What does annoy me tho is how all the “bats” in the game are some wierd flying lizard monster. What’s the deal with that?
Basically what Fluffball said, also don’t really see the point of the axe/axe, if you want AoE GS is better and if you really need a ranged option Longbow is a better choice.
It will let you drop aggro with huters shot, add som vuln for the group and droping a barrage on a large pack then switching back to the GS + drake F1 will do sick AoE damage.
Besides the trait 1 and 5 in skirmishing meshes well with 2hand training, you’ll crit alot and share your fury with the pet.
Using simple tactic i can deal with Rapid Fire just last arrow, (+with crit) up to 16k dmg to the end boss.
How much hp do you think mobs have?
You aren’t dealing 16k damage witht he last arrow, you are dealing 16k damage over 5 seconds(which is really fricken rare that it acually goest that high it’s not like the rest of us haven’t tried or are playing min/maxed zerker rangers) which by itself isn’t anything special to begin with.
The Longbow deals less damage than our melee weapons, period, it’s just a fact and there’s really no point in arguing about it.
If your prime concern is to deal damage, you’re better of switching to the sword if you can stay alive.
Not only is it’s base damage higher the third strike stacks might on our pet(up to 3 i think it was? If not higher) which boosts it even more so there’s really no contest.
That’s acually one of the things i enjoy about the class, and tbh i don’t even think about it anymore, it’s like driving a stick shift.
I think zephyr’s speed is pretty sweet considering it’s a 5 point trait, especially if you’re melee/BM you can give your pet 6 stacks of might during those 2 seconds with your sword, also it’s very handy for ressing people.
But Evasive Purity on the other hand.. yeah still bitter about that one.
Can’t belive they thought nerfing a skill that usedto clear a condition from yourself and any nearby allies on a dodge to this… thing we have now was reasonable.
I mean removes blind? Really? Do you know what else removes blind?
Auto attacking … and it dosen’t even require you to invest 30 points into a trait line.
Maby they don’t really know what they want the ranger to be, or they’re just having trouble sorting out the pet scripting/ai/whatever.
Judging from the revamp that happend between Beta Weekend 2 and 3, maby they decided that all rangers should be very pet heavy, and thought it was better to make the change before the game went live rather than later, regardless the state of the pet ai and just fix that later.
Or both, that’s the only reason i can come up with why absolutely abyssmal traits like Evasive Purity and other problems are still there even after 6 months.
Maby they just want to keep the class functional( and it is) untill they can make some substatial changes they’re happy with, I really doubt they have “forgotten” about the ranger but who can say when that happens?
Next patch? Next year?
Also i don’t see why a ranger shouldn’t be able to solo Lupi, that fight is all about evading it’s attacks and rangers have evades and vigor comming out of the yin yang, the pet will how ever be dead most of the fight and it will take a really long time.
Soloing Lupi isn’t so much about the class as it is about the player.
I felt like a god leveling as a D/D ele, what armor are you using?
I only used defensive gear at lower levels and rarely met anything i couldn’t kill.
Another nice combo that i used was S/D+Lightening Hammer, that hammer hits like a truck at lower levels and what i’d do was burst/load up on might with the scepter and then switch to the hammer if anything was left standing.
The blind at the end of it’s attack chain can really get you out of a pinch, some mobs swing so slow that you can keep eveb a group of them blinded aslong as the hammer lasts.
Beacuse they’re cool.
Next question!
The tavern in the crafting area, Black Citadel
-“Stay away from me, i’m not interested”
-“Well,well…. Kitten’s got claws..”
-“Kitten’s got a sword too! So back off!”
Well, personally i’ve always prefered melee rangers.
When i think ranger i think Aragon, Minsc or just generally some wilderness survival thief/warrior hybrid but i’m still not happy, and it’s the same reason those that prefer archery aren’t happy with it.
The pet is kitten and beeing dependant on them isn’t even optional.
You either need them, or you really need them.
The ranger is more dependat on it’s class mechanic than most(if not all) other professions, and it’s the most unreliable and wonky one there is.
I need to switch attunements on my elementalist for it to function properly, the diffirance is i have complete control over that, i do not have complete control over the pet. Hell it can’t even hit moving targets properly.
I just wish it could play more like it did in the two first betaweekeds where the pet was still crap and the main source of ranger complaints, but atleast it wasn’t a burden.
The class wen’t from the most op in the game to the worst during the last BWE, while it’s alot better now than the trainwreck the BWE3 ranger was it’s still one of the weaker classes all beacuse of the kitten poor desicion that the pet should do substantial potion of the rangers damage no matter how you spec.
Axe offhand seems to be rangers biggest DPS bursts
10k damage after a 5 second channel is a pretty far cry from beeing bursty, specially since we can’t even move with it.
Whenever you channel an ability like axe 5, 100blades, whatever, the final number is the total damage the ability did while channeling.
Something i do to mitigate the problem is to “aim” where they’re going rather where they are.
If you’re an FPS gamer you probably know what i mean, but incase you’re not try have the center of the scree, or your characters head slightly ahead of the mob/player while you’re moving about.
This ussually fixes it for me.
quote=1479787;CalvinHobbes.3541:]
Wait a minute. The writing team wasn’t in charge of the story during development? That could actually explain quite a bit. Is this a new concept to have people other than the writing team develop the story? Or is this the norm within the gaming world? It just seems bizarre to me to have someone other than the writing team developing the story. Sort of like having the janitor doing the coding.[/quote]
This is just speculation ofcourse, but they may have added the personal story to compete with Stars Wars the Old Republic.
It just seems so mashed in there in the last second while the writing team had their hands full with other projects.
From a Charr perspective i found the start quite enjoyable( couldn’t stand the human start, way too campy for me), the Vigil questline isn’t too bad either but it goes really downhill when it becomes the Traherne show.
See, i don’t have a problem taking a backseat to a strong protagonist, the problem is Traherne isn’t it.
He didn’t earn kitten, he just gets dropped in our laps and the game goes “this is now the main character” while he succeeds at everything.
He’s not even useful from a game play perspective, he’s just another useless peon with glitchy ai that you hardly notice is there in the first place, if he was more usefull i think people would soften up to him abit, Dinky for example is quite usefull with his buffs besides his quirky personality, and i liked having him around more beacuse i thought he was helpfull rather than amusing.
I honestly find the characters in the world/cities/events with just a few snippets of dialouge alot more colourful and interesting than him. ( Those two Leathal Weapon-esque Charr in the Iron Marches comes to mind)
Another thing that bugs me is how rarely past events/acomplishments/race/rank get acknwoleged by NPC’s, i supouse it’s beacuse of time constraints and lack of rescorses same reason every bit of PC dialogue is the same regardless of race/gender past the first 20-30 levels.
But it’s one of those little things that gives a sense of purpouse, acomplishment and progression and i really hope future stories will pay abit more attention to this.
Also, the whole heroic sacriffice thing get’s really old, especially when it has zero effect if we don’t care for the character in the first place.
I think this happend about 4-5 times in my first characters story and that’s a wee bit too much if you ask me.
I do feel bad for the people who had to come up with a bunch of stories for a pretty long game when they aren’t even writers, but i’m sorry it shows.
Using rampager gear, some traps, abusing Zephyr’s Speed and most importantly high dps pets like the jaguar you can do some very respectable damage, if your pet is alive.
And most of the time that’s a pretty big if.
Besides the pet beeing inresponsive and not rushing to you straight away when you call it back sometimes, it’s like some encounters were specifically made to kitten of rangers.
Like Kholer, if you miss your petswap right as the pet gets pulled, there, bam, gone.
Your dps is crap for the rest of the fight.
Wouldn’t sting so much if signet of stone didn’t have a wooping 2min cd…
That said, i ussually do enjoy my ranger in dungeons.
While leveling, beeing concious is entierly optional when playing a ranger but in dungeons it can be quite challinging if you wanto make the most of the class.
Sure you can go longbow/axe+whatever and some bear or red moa pet, hang back and still somewhat contribute to the group(specially if your group needs control, we so many snares and roots it’s insane), but i need to make way more of an effort than on my warrior or ele to get simillar results.
Something that could be neat was if we could have a trait that made them more like engineering kits.
They wouldn’t drop a second coppy on the ground anymore, but we could swap them in and out as we please. This wouldn’t apply to the greatsword ofc.
Someone, somewhere might even slot the shield
Condition specs have been some of our strongest specs forever, simply beacuse they are the least pet reliant(also we usedto be able to burst bleeds like a boss, 20 or so stacks in a matter of seconds).
Our conditions do the same damage as everyone with the same gear setup while our direct damage attacks do not, with our pet ontop of that our damage can be quite sick in optimal circumstances.
Most people who complain/ed about our damage just didn’t take pets into account and ran around in berserker powerbuilds with a bear and a longbow.
From my prespective it,s go condition damage if you feel you just never have enough control over your pet, or roll with the punches and go beast mastery or gtfo.
Lack of build diversety is a problem ALOT of classes have, but it does bug me that we can’t choose how reliant we wanto be on our pet especially when it’s so frickin wonky.
If we could have the pet/ranger damage ratio we had in the early beta weekends but had a trait in BM that reduced our damage but increased the pets, with an added bonus perhaps, (regen maby? Just tuck it in there with Natural Healing ? I dunno)
i would litteraly kitten concentrated happyness.
I’ve always liked pet classes but always hated beeing overly dependant on something that will always be flawed, tamable pets that are usefull as utilties and contributes a portion of the damage?
Sign me up!
Pets that make up a huge portion of my damage and end up beeing a burden more than an asset?
Boooo!
I read these and couldn’t help but laugh.
The worst part i wasn’t even surprised
Atleast some GS buffs, that’s nice.
@Nldixon
The second half is the kick/knockback, what it’s saying is that you will just block normaly and keep moving instead of stopping and kicking the air when you block a ranged attack
Ranger damage was nerfed beacuse they buffed our pets.
I’m guessing they thought they could fix the pet issues and it would work out, too bad it didn’t and we’re stuck with 40%or so of our damage not beeing able to hit a moving target and dying to aoe after 2 seconds.
Man i miss the BWE2 Ranger…
“According to the profession description we are “unparalleled archers.”
In other words, the profession description is pretty useless for translating to in-game capabilities :9."
It usedto say something like jack of all trades, master of them all, deadly at any range and merly profficient with a bow.
Hell knows why they changed it, but this was during the weekend beta events before the pet change when rangers were awsome and abit op.
We also have more aoe snares than anyone, very nice to have if you have alot of ranged members in your group or you don’t have much control.
Ensare is great for that, if you have a large pull comming in rooting them all together so everyone can aoe them can be very effective.
I think the notion that we must be better than every other class at range just beacuse we’re rangers is frickin dumb, making our swords usless, and don’t say defensive weapons, you know what’s safer and more defensive than beeing in melee?
Not beeing in melee.
Shoud we have a good ranged builds that let you go nuts with your longbow?
Hell yes and they need some tweaks, but don’t leave the melee ranger in the dust, rangers should be about pets ,their evasive jack-of-all trades playstyle and nature theme if you ask me, rather than the same kittenized ranger that they stick in every other MMO (what’s up with that anyway?).
Got a really nice one from the personal story that was like a giant morningstar, more of those would be nice, never been a fan of the sledgehammer type warhammers.
I love my Charr, really do, all 5 of them.
But i don’t see why you’d wanto delete your current one, i think you’d just regret it when you do, burn out and stop playing the game.
Have you already maxed out yourslots? You get 3 more for 800 gems iirc, or 1200 tops so it’s not gonna cost you much, would be worth it for me to satisfy my curiosity without burning any bridges anyway.
“The damage of ranger? Sustained? What are you talking about? Enough to calm yourself. Ranger is pathetic, weak, lopsided, unbalanced sh…t, with one single advantage – pet tanking. Ooo eah!”
If you can’t do damage as a ranger, you can’t play a ranger, we do loads of damage it just comes from several sources just like a mesmer, traps, pet and your weaponsets
.
Seriously, drop the longbow for a shortbow, get rid of the bear, grab a flame trap and vipersnest/spiketrap, get some rampager gear and learn to utilize your pets and you’ll be killing fast.
My warrior puts out more AoE damage consistently with a greatsword but my ranger can aoe burst like no other with a river drake.
People think the longbow does great damage beacuse of the big number after a long cast but it really isn’t that great, it’s the most damage we can put out from a single skill sure, but it’s over what? 5 seconds? It’s great in wvwvw but that’s about it, you’ll do more damage with a shortbow or a sword/warhorn or tortch.
If you wanto keep using the longbow for general PvE/sPvP beacuse it’s fun, knock yourself out it certanly works, it’s just that other weapons do better.
Also another tip is, don’t mash F2, it will interupt it, just press it once and eventually the pet will do the skill, it’s slow and unresponsive as hell but atleast it does it… eventually.

like that, not to mention you polar bear and alpine wolf that has an aoe chill
Pets, a thousand times pets.
I’ve leveld a warrior and a ranger side by side at an even pace(they’re both 80 now) and they down a mob at roughly the same speed, as Yasha pointed out you need to coordinate with your pets to get burst out, but when you do it can be sick.
Drake f2’s do a ton of damage, birds also hit very hard and have a very short cooldown on theirs making them my dps pet of choice.
Some of the missions can be fun but the writing is terrible for the most part, most of the characters are annoying and some lines are just flat out laughably bad.
I think there was a line in the Order of Whispers quest line that went something like “well if we keep fighting, then i guess we’re not dead”, read with complete sincerity.
If that was the point of the joke, then fair enough beacuse it made me laugh, but i got the impression my character was beeing serious.
The only parts i acually enjoyed were the charr, asura and some of the vigil storylines.
Favorite playable: Charr- the more i play them the more i love them, also their npc’s always make me smile, especially the cubs. They’re so sweet they give you diabetes.
Least favoirte: Humans, they’re just so incredibly generic, much thanks to their voice acting.
Favorite non playble: Skritt i think
Least favorite: Quagan, they just kitten me off
