Got a new one:
Opening the door to Caudecus’s mansion and getting swarmed by 20 White Mantles?
/helmeton
Finally kicked Caudecus’s butt after dying a hundred times during that ridiculous fight that everybody wants to forget?
/helmeton … wait, where’s my helmet? And chestplate? And boots? And…
Overall, I really loved Episode 4! It was in fact so amazing that I got around 5 Million XP on that map alone (yep, maxed my gliding there). I loved everything. The White Mantle really made you pick your battles as they were not OP, but certainly more demanding than other trashmobs, especially in groups. Really hated those clerics and mesmers.
But, no light without shadow. What were you thinking when designing the last mission?!? Despite doing quite well in all of HoT, I died on nearly every occasion or at least got downed. See that dude with the huge dog? Him, the dog and the archer guy can eat seemingly insane amounts of damage each while wrecking you with every normal AA attack. Open the door to the manor? Get rushed by 10 WM, all puking their AoEs on you with no other way than retreat. From challenging to frustrating in mere seconds.
For the final fight, I am at a loss of words. As much as I liked the whole chapter, I hated every second of that fight. Died 2 times, but all was good, killed the bad guy. But then, phase 2 happened… “What do you mean, that wasn’kitten WTH, you want me to fight THAT???” It suffices to say that I left his mansion naked save for my helmet.
TL;DR: I loved the whole chapter, except for the boss fight which I will never. Do. Again. Not for the love of all six!
To Starprowler, may his memory live forever!
Although it is his death we mourn, in truth we mourn for ourselves as we have lost a fellow GW2 player, a guild mate, a friend.
May his life remind us of all that is good in this world, just as his death reminds us that all has to end.
Requiescat in pace.
(Also, a wonderful tribute. Great work!)
Yeah, it’s a shame that there is nothing to be experienced apart from “I did all my traitlines, now I’m ready to become berserker/dragonhunter/scrapper”. One has to imagine or play it like their toon stumbles out of a burning wreckage and is so confused/desperate/whatever that they use weapons that they didn’t use before. So much wasted potential. But then again, that would have meant to put countless hours into the development of those “tutorials”.
@Xenon: I think, berserker has its explanation in itself as well. A warrior that has forsaken all tactic and dips into his primal, savage instincts to survive the jungle (okay, somehow I now got the picture of almost-naked Lord Faren jumping from branch to branch… that’s weird!)? I still wonder how Tempests and Chronos fit into this, but then again, I haven’t played those classes (yet).
All that time spent arguing on the forums, that could’ve been spent improving instead…
Queue: EYE OF THE TIGER.
Word.
Maybe I just missed it, but are we talking about NA or EU?
I say, do both!
I started other chars and here and there did some HoT to further increase my Masteries there, mainly for gliding (iluvit). Imho, Warrior and Guardian are both excellent picks if it comes to survivability and still dishing out some nice DPS. If you want to stay cloth-y, you can also go for Necro. While it was sometimes a pain to level it, Reaper Spec was so awesome I sometimes like it even better than my Warrior. GS may be very slow, but for necro standards also pretty hard hitting and Reapers Shroud saved my butt a hundred times while also being a nice damage dealer.
After all, I’d say play’em all
Done. Now where are my cookies? They talked about cookies, didn’t they?
Keep going!
Welcome to the game!
Although it might me some time before you hit 80, one warning for you: If you bought HoT as well, don’t run into that right after you finished the main quest. Just. Don’t! Once you do reach lvl 80, either go ahead and do another class (which I greatly recommend, they are all very different and most are super interesting) or do Fractals of the Mists (unlock at 80 I think), map completion, Living World Season 2 (although it will cost gems, but it is definitely worth it, for the lore and the stepwise increase in difficulty). When you feel that you are successful with all those things, you can go on to HoT. Because otherwise, you will be pretty overwhelmed with HoT.
If you don’t own HoT, just ignore my post altogether and just have fun with this awesome game! As already stated, but can’t be stated enough, never be afraid to ask questions or for help. You are always likely to get an answer/support sooner or later.
Have fun!
This discussion is getting sooo old. More than 1k replies, sheesh.
To sum it all up:
There are people that like HoT.
There are people that don’t like HoT.
Both sides are mutually exclusive, so the intersection equals zero.
No compromise.
So what is the very point of this discussion?
Somehow reminds me of all the wars that have allegedly been fought over religion.
If the haters would not hate so much and play HoT instead, maybe they would be having fun with it by now…? If the likers would play instead of trying to convince the haters, they would be having fun nonetheless. So basically, this whole discussion is a lose-lose-situation.
New Player, Sad Player. Expansion ruined it.

Change your whole build?
On my warrior, I change 1 utility, my elite and take hammer/mace-shield instead of GS.
Takes only 5 seconds and can hardly be considered changing my whole build. Sure, every crapmob having a breakbar is a PITA, but what gives? One can either learn to handle that problem or leave it be.
Seems to me the real problem is getting used to steamrolling everything with even the crapiest setup/build and then realizing that there is actually more than “Press 1 to win”. And then finally, failing to adapt. But that’s just my humble opinion, because I was totally in the same boat, but at some point, I left it.
i try hard to understand if its troll post
It’s not a troll, it’s a parody.
It is ?
O.o
Ho, Yeah. It is !
You sure got me fooled
One might add weapons of mass destruction for engie and the ability to dual-wield GS on warrior, but well. One has to stay realistic.
Any update on this? I’m having the same problem right now, been there all night, Noran’s was under Seraph control and still no Ghost Bandit.
I don’t want to disappoint you, but I am pretty sure everybody playing a Charr and being annoyed by the running animation will already have had that notion. This alternative ultimately failing the expectations could be the reason this thread exists.
That being said, having to press buttons to not being annoyed at all time because of something as basic as the running animation hardly seems to be a real solution. It’s more like having to pull on a piece of rope which opens your roof on a rainy day to flush the toilet. It works somehow, but you are still not satisfied.
ANet, gimme bipedal running and take my money!!!
…is it french for… well kittening?
Totally agreed. It would save my dormant charr character from being deleted because the quadrupedal running has bothered me ever since. Please ANet, give the player the option to enable permanent bipedal movement.
Totally forgot about final thrust, good point.
Alright, so for today’s agenda: Craft flashy sword and git gud with it
10 Veteran and Elite Svanir coming at you during “Frozen out”?

Can’t stop doing stupid helmeton-memes and fearing the forum’s wrath?

Stick sword into scabbard – 0.5 seconds if you are standing. Try that while running/dodging.
Detach the shield from your forearm and put the shield over your head so it is on your back – 2-3 seconds, IF you wear no helmet, pauldrons etc. I neglect the fact that the leather strap to fasten the shield on your back is normally detached during combat.
Get the bow off your back (where the shield is at right now) – around 0.5 sec, again if wearing nothing where the bowstring can get caught up in.So, summarizing, if we leave all of reality aside, it would be possible to switch weapons in 3 or 4 seconds. In reality, a soldier clad in heavy plate would not even be able to reach to his back to fetch anything. Also, switching from bow to sword/whatever (and ditching the bow in that process) goes fast. Drop bow, pull sword. But the other way around takes pretty long in comparison. Bernhard Cornwell’s “The Archer’s Tale” gives some interesting insights into swordplay and archery and how things went back then.
condi warr be like
“ok i drop my longbow to swap to my sword and torch” some time latter
“oh kitten its dps time let me get my bow”
a few moments later
“WHERE THE kitten DID I DROP MY BOW”
So it goes
On another note though, any throw weapon attack is BS, too. Sure, if you’d wield dual axes, throwing one and keeping on fighting with the one left over would be beneficial, but the GS toss is reaaaaaally weird. Even weirder, the GS does a u-turn and comes back to you… while you are moving… and in the meantime you can still do 100B with the backup GS you had on your back? Yeah right… so, to be quite honest, realitiy should not be topic in any fantasy game.
thanks Plautze, i would love to see a cooldown time of 4 seconds, sounds reasonable.
oh yes, a real medieval soldier would not even change weapons, otherwise he would drop it and never get back to it.
Then Warrior is your class, if you are willing to take 5 instead of 4 seconds cooldown
Going to buy something on black friday?

Yep, works fine as a meme.
I finally got my Inventor’s Sunglasses. Thanks ANet!!!
Now my Charr Engie is king of swag!
Chess is already in game, you just need a guild vault.
Made my day

Whenever I use rifle and then compare it to the longbow, it seems rather weak (I run power) measured on the hits it takes me to down something in PvE. Maybe it’s just me. Then again, running around firing a rifle in that five shot mode is so awesome
when gw2 first launched axe was pretty crazy.
nowadays I would run gs, sword/axe.
Would you also run sword on a power warrior? To my understanding it is a condi weapon…? Perhaps I should give it another twirl.
I always relied on my trusty GS and never looked back. From time to time I use the longbow for its F1 when there are lots of mobs (and #3 to stack some might in that fire field), even without having 1 point in condi damage, it cranks out decent numbers. Otherwise I swap to Axe mainhand as it has a pretty hard hitting auto attack and of course eviscerate. The offhand is up to the player and the situation. If you want defense and like to bash your enemies with your offhand, use shield. If you want to do the raging berserker style, go twin axe, but some consider that to be sub-par.
Generally, you can level every class on every weapon they can wield, with mixed success. Going perfect DPS is another thing, of course.

As the sigils have internal cooldown, that can’t be the reason. As a warrior player running with fast hands (5s weapon swap) while using sigils that have 9s internal cooldown, I would not say that sigils were the reason for making it such a long wait.
But the art in this game is to bridge the time between weapon swaps (mostly without using AA all the time) using utility or passive abilities from traits. Also what zealex said.
Lots of good solutions here, I really don’t care what they do, as long as they do something
after 2 hours of eventing I always dread the 10 minutes I spend opening all those boxes, press “Salvage all” on my Copper-fed and have 40 minor runes and sigils clogging up my inventory -.-
Act with wisdom, but act!
Edit: Making superior baseline would not work, as non-60s would be barred from using sigils and runes completely.

I didn’t believe in Stun Breaks either, but just adding one to your skillbar and this particular skill being the only one that is doable while being stunned (at least in my current setup) works wonders since I use it quite frequently now.
Also, as Crinn said, dodge, block, stability.
Let’s start a petition to bring sunglasses back to the game! I’m pretty sure it is not just me wanting them back.
This until I lay down my guy I’ve been wanting the inventors forever now I’m about to die if I dont see them soon
Your life is saved! According to today’s listings, inventor’s sunglasses are now in the store for 150 gems.
kitten right! And I even get the medium Aetherblade
happy days indeed!
Quaggan combat tonic just for the laughs.
Proof of Heroics. You get them at each WvW level up.
^If it’s an optional $5/month subscription that only nets one $5 worth of Gems, what’s stopping players from just buying $5 of Gems each month?
I’m afraid I don’t see the incentive, or how it’s any different that what there is already in place.
So it’s no disadvantage for the player, but at the same time a gain in income stability for ANet. Win-Win. Or do you buy gems worth 5$ on a regular basis?
Edit: Apart from saving a game that has spent thousands of hours of fun, what more incentive do you need?
(edited by Plautze.6290)
Medium Aetherblade, here I come!
Edit: Even better, the inventor’s sunglasses are back online
happy happy joy joy.

Is there any comprehensive information about ANet’s financial situation other than that quarterly report? I did read it, but was none the wiser after doing so.
@Topic: As long as the optional subscription stays optional and brings no benefit over non-premium users apart from having flashier moves, emotes whatever cosmetic, it would be okay for me.
After all, sure it’s nice to have no monthly subscription but what if ANet demanded a minuscule monthly subscription fee (say, 5 €/$ per month) and gave a monthly 5 €/$‘s worth of gems to the user? In the long run, nobody would have to buy gems anymore… or so it would seem.. But knowing human’s nature, they would not be willing to wait 16 months to buy this or that, instead they would buy more gems to purchase their desired items at once.
ANet would have income stability, the players would not be milked too much at a time and this “€/$ to gems” subscription could be optional as well. Like an optional gems subscription. 5 bucks is no sum that ruins me, so I would be more than willing to pay that for this marvelous game.
I think about it that way: I can buy a game for 60 bucks, play it for 20 hours (and that is considered long) and then toss it into the corner (average modern day game) or I can invest the same 60 bucks as annual investment into a game that has gifted many of you with thousands of hours of joy and fun.
Edit: As an afterthought, this would surely ruin gold economy if gems stay exchangeable. Maybe they should change that.

I’m not funding a company which does not have my best interests in mind.
… so you are funding no companies at all?
Them trying to profit and them having my best interests in mind do not need to be mutually exclusive. Many people willingly pay for things they like, despite being able to access so much of it for free or much less pretty readily (movies, music/concerts, printed art, etc.).
Successful companies often have their clients’ best interests in mind; Google defines a substantial portion of Internet traffic. Amazon offers cheap goods and greatly discounted fast shipping at their own expense, responsive customer service and quick refunds on goods at no cost, often rarely asking for returns. League of Legends has objectively zero means of P2W and has put in a ton of effort to cultivate their community and crank out quality gameplay over the years. Walmart offers convenience and guaranteed low prices.
Of the lot, Google is the only really sketchy deal, but even then the information they sell is generally pretty non-invasive, and it probably just has to do more with people not even knowing they sell it or simply not caring if they do know.
A lot of these companies could afford to mark up their services, but they don’t, because client approval matters more to them and their revenue long-term.
You have a point there, good one!
If you plan on getting your specialization weapon unlocked (Dark Harvest, Wild Abandon etc) you also need exalted gathering (last one in Exalted Lore, what a waste to put it at the end imho) as well as the aforementioned Nuhoch Stealth Detection, Itzel Language and Stealth Gliding (which lies on the way to get max gliding, so it’s okay).
Weren’t they all beaten to death repeatedly in those pointless mount threads?
‘Tis all that needs sayin’.
I’m not funding a company which does not have my best interests in mind.

Have been saying things along this line since the new player experience was put into the game and literally made the core game a joke.
It was already a joke. The core game was blanket nerfed in the original beta, basically halving everything. Enemy damage was originally a lot like HoT, even a little higher in some cases with dodge or die special attacks.
Most players simply do not want a challenge and attempting to force change will only come at a great loss, as they’ll simply go somewhere else. Look at any other MMO and solo content is usually a joke. ArenaNet has always been for the gamers however, rather than the majority. If they have no plans to continue supporting that audience, they really should revert the core game, simply to not mislead people early on.
Oh, i know that the game was nerfed during the beta because People were screaming about the oh so high difficulty.
But the new player experience turned the game into an even greater joke for me.HoT is what Lvl 80 content should be..
And i’m not saying the entire Level curve should be like that but let’s be honest, when you Level your character, gain your first Utility Slot and gain a skill that you will most likely ignore because it’s a condi counter and most low level mobs had their conditions removed… yeah..Events should scale better, Veterans should have better builds than normal enemies, Elites should have better builds than Veterans (not just more HP) and, let’s say for example, every 10 or so Levels the Areas should add something for you to learn, CC, Conditions, Breakbars and so forth.
If you had all that during leveling not only would you feel more accomplished in the higher areas, given a decent rework, it would also make lvl 80 characters scaled down less of a powerhouse in the lower areas because they had to look out too.
Challenge can be done gradually so that it doesn’t feel too hard but just that amount that would make you learn something.
Know enough people who quit the game because the easy mode that is core tyria is too boring for them.
While I do agree to what you’re saying wholeheartedly, I don’t see this happen ever. It would be win or lose for ANet. Increase the difficulty gradually, depending on level/zone and most people will start crying that it’s too hard. Make dodge-or-die attacks (although I’m in for this as it makes the game more dynamic and finally gives some important use to dodges apart from negating damage and looking kitten) and they will cry because of that. Take a look at Dark Souls: Everbody is crying because it is so hard, yet it has a die-hard (heh) fan community. Granted, those are mostly crazed masochists, but at least they stick to their game. Because it used to be like that from the start. In the case of GW2, only die-hard fans who get fun out of HoT would stick to the game while most new gamers would perhaps drop it rather quickly.
Again, I do agree on your opinion, but I don’t see it happen. When I started this game, I couldn’t get enough of leveling. Right now, I’m bored of core Tyria (if it wasn’t for its beauty and places and dialogues and lore, I’d likely avoid it completely for some time) and can’t get enough of Tangled Depths (which I did truly despise on my first try). Irony.
Making HoT F2P is the best way to flood this forum with people qq-ing about how hard HoT is :P we have seen that like every day in the last few months.
Some of the event chains could do with a little tune-down, tho. It’s highly irritating to start the Ogre event chain in TD and fail it multiple times despite calling out for help because literally no one is showing up. And when there are 3 persons showing up, they get downed 4 times in 2 minutes and ragequit to do some blob-content.
Metas I reckon to be fine. Last time I checked, there were 4 full DS instances for example. One has to be flexible, I guess. When there is nobody doing a specific meta, they should do another one. Also, some guilds/communities offer max tier meta runs multiple times a day. And please, don’t give me the “I want to play what I want when I want” argument. Being all self-centered is what makes people ignore downed players or players in need of help. And don’t give me the “I only have limited time per day” argument either. I too have maybe 1h per day, yet the other day, I did not progress in TD map completion, as I had intended, but helped other players do all the HPs (in my case, again). It was very enjoyable and certainly better than just doing map completion. It did not feel like a loss.
As an average player, I do agree that some maps seem dead, but then I DO use LFG and sometimes are lucky enough to do what I actually wanted. If I don’t, I just do something else in this joy-packed wonderland we call HoT
The wiki tells about some of the names stemming from gaellic/celtic culture. I personally sometimes use a gaellic translator or google translate with the welsh setup. For example, “death” means “marwolaeth” in welsh (just a quick search, seems to rather befit a male char).
For example, I once planned a Sylvari female thief named “Arlliwia Whisperleaf” (the first being welsh for “shade”). However, I settled for the celtic-ish name Gwaellion and made a male
Sylvari don’t need surnames.
For me, reaper GS is working fine too. Once you get used to it taking 2 seconds to be swung and then hitting the enemy, you should do just fine. When I switch back to Dagger/Axe/Whatever, I feel somewhat less powerful. At least that’s my experience.
my vote goes to Vamp Signet on necro,
a passive heal smaller than warriors healing signet (which ticks every second)
but vamp sig only ticks when you are getting hit (and has a 1 second internal cooldown),
when activated it gives you 6 seconds to get a maximum of 5 heals of around 500 each (2500 health total…)
terrible terrible signet.for the passive i’d remove the ICD and also make it buff all life steals on you by a percentage (30%?)
for the active rather than targeting an enemy it should be a buff on you which works as it currently does (but with no ICD).
So much this! Vamp Signet is so much bugging itself that it makes Necro even more a class for masochists than it is already.
I really don’t think it will be the mace (as much as I’d like to see it happen) as we already have the tool kit. Maybe if they changed the gear shield to be in the engie’s hand at all time, that would be nice.
Perhaps a focus (or dagger or any other thing small) as MH weapon with the skin of some power gauntlet would be nice. Then we could go in throwing our shield and bashing baddies with our mechanized fist of doom!!! Of course that power gauntlet would have “Rocket Fist” on #3, which would be ranged knock-down
or “Spring Fist” which would be a fist on a spring that gave us the ability to not only knock back an opponent but by double-#3-ing also pulling them to us like Grasping Darkness.
And here I am, dreaming again.
—This Is Not A Desire Post—
(just a note for those browsing for unfulfilled desires)
Hello again!
I have just returned to the forums after 7 months away and I am absolutely floored to see that the thread is still here and how much it has grown and been used in that time!
It truly was a wonderful and touching thing to read each post of the 5 1/2 pages of expressed and fulfilled desires added since I was last here. It was also very nice to see so many familiar names still active on the forums and in this thread.
I want to express my appreciation to each and every one of you for your kindness and assistance to others both inside and outside of this thread – your efforts to keep the thread respectable (and open) clearly shows it has had a real impact as the thread is still going and is used by many.
I also want to express my appreciation to Gaile and all of the forum moderators who have spent time and effort in relation to this thread. Despite the myriad issues and concerns that have come up relating to it, I thank you all for permitting it to continue for a long as it has. I also think I kind of need to apologize to you all for any trouble it has caused. If I do, then I most definitely do.
As for me, I’ve managed to again get some in-game time due to most family health concerns having passed for now. Once I clean up the huge mess I left my TP orders in, as well as take inventory (bad memory is bad), I will go back through these new pages and help with desires where I am able before going back to older ones. (As I am still without HoT, I regret that I cannot help with the many desires related to it. My apologies on that.) One thing I am happy to help with any time I am on is that I have also returned to helping provide ports in the Southsun JP and for anything needed within the Not So Secret Aetherblade JP. If anyone is need of assistance with those, just message me in-game.
Happy and safe adventuring, both in-game and out, to you all!
:)
Wipes single tear away from his beard-stubbled face
You Sir, are a saint. Welcome back to the forums and the game!
Edit: Not a desire post either.
After suffering under the initial shock of hitting HoT after not learning the basics in a much too easy core game (but later learning them by adapting and finally overcoming the problems), I can’t wait to hit it with another character and see if it goes better this time.
The LS content I’ve played this far had me amazed and I hope that the game will proceed in that direction. Sure, having one currency for each map really is bad idea when inventory space seems scarce, but in the long run, this won’t stop me from saying I like where the game is going in general.
Keep on going, ANet!
DreamyAbaddon should become a Honorary ANet Member for this
all this dedication… is it actually sticky’d yet?
