Legendary Nothing

Recalibar.6482

Hi,

I have been playing the game since the beginning. I am the proud owner of a legendary weapon. It took me many months to craft it, visiting all maps, participating into WvW campaigns, making disheartening requests to Zommoros, farming rare items and events.

To me, legendary meant the ultimate achievement, one that one could aim at after clearing all content of the game, one that could prove one had become a knowledgeable player of GW2. Legendary was “effort” and “pain”, and it was outlined as such by ArenaNet.

It has now become a meaningless quest: you have twisted the economical rules so that people get more gold, you have given immediate access to precursor and legendary weapons through the Black Lion Trade House, and now: you offer them as a reward for a few tournaments.

Repeatedly changing the rules for the most important quest of the game has emptied it from its substance, and is a mark of contempt to all those who played by the initial rules. You’ve wasted my feelings as a player, and shattered my trust.

Regards.

I don’t think one legendary is going to tip the balance of the number of people that should have such prestige. To me, Pvp championships are a pretty good way to introduce them to the economy (In fact, I’d argue that so many people have legendary weapons these days that getting a free one from a championship position is kind of lame.)

I would argue, however, three points:
1) Legendaries should be account bound upon creation.
2) When precursor crafting becomes available, it should require 1000+ hours investment from the people looking to create them. Considering that I’ve played for 4000 hours and only made two legendaries, it’s a pretty reasonable expectation.
3) Crafted precursors should be account bound.

I think limiting legendaries is a good thing, the fact that people running level 50 fractals decked with them almost undermines their value. I know, it’s endgame content, but the problem is that when everyone has one, they no longer have any value as a symbol of prestige.

I recently joined a group yesterday that was looking for experienced heavies after not reading their post. I was greeted with this dialogue.

“Hey, heavies only”
Oh, sorry, do my twin incinerators change your mind? link
“I’m not impressed with your credit card.”
I have over 4000 hours logged into this character alone and almost 10k AP.
“Oh, sorry, your *parent’s credit card.”

I mean, I was mad, but I totally understood where they were coming from. Owning legendaries just isn’t that impressive anymore.

Nerf on crit. damage

The DPS meta will remain, all this will accomplish is annoying people for no good reason.

Consider a powerful potion. +10% outgoing damage, -10% incoming damage. What advantage does that give you?

A total of a 20% advantage. -10% damage is -10% advantage.

Zerkers will hopefully no longer be meta, but only time will tell. I welcome some godkitten diversity.

ANet's silence is why so many people leave.

The team that decided to “nerf” crit damage must have forgot to send that memo to the teams that made the zerker DPS test Knight events and this new trait update.

The see the words saying “fix the current zerker/heavy meta”, but I’m not seeing the actions that will actually do that. I see one token nerf that effects zerker and non-zerker alike, and content that reinforces the need for zerker along with a new trait that ensures warriors won’t actually lose DPS.

2. Less people able to make a legendary = less sellers = price rise.

This logic offends me as an economist.

Reduced demand for precursors will cause precursor prices to fall.

The last thing that people need is grinding guild influence just to remain a member of that guild. I got tired of that kitten in GW1.

Depends on which army. Generally speaking, none of them are sympathetic; we’ve got 2 factions of religious zealots, communist zealots, robots, psychopathic and probably dragon-addled rebels, and pirates. Those guys all made their own bed. If they showed any sign of repentance or any indication that they were acting outside of their own control, I’d be more sympathetic.

My question is; is Scarlet really any better?

“The biggest of those must be the change to the dye system. In the NA/EU launch version dyes were character unlocks, whereas in the China version they’re account unlocks. With this new system you only need to collect a dye once and you can use it on any character. This is more convenient, but it means demand for dye will go down, so we’re also reducing supply. Dye unlocks now come only from crafting and from the gem store.”

Couldn’t have they have just, I don’t know, reduced dye drop rate?

Condition damage needs fixing, but if you mean “group support” as in you have one player sitting back as a buffbot, no that does not need fixing in any way. Every class excluding necro brings support in a dungeon regardless of their gear or build.

I think there’s a pretty wide gap in what some people would call support. As you said, necros don’t bring support. I would also argue that engineers and rangers lack in anything but unilateral support and nobody likes that kitten because you aren’t “contributing to the team.” 3/8 professions though is pretty bad. Warriors also lack much support aside from banners, although they bring DPS to the table – but that again circles back to how there seems to be a majority of players who prefer to bring some defensive support with them, considering that an easy fifth of the playerbase prefers Guardian.

Ranger spotter and frost spirit is absolutely nothing to dismiss. And engineers can might stack and give vulnerability. So…. Uh. Yeah. It’s still 1/8 professions.

After playing guild wars 2 since release, I can safely say that I don’t think I’ve ever seen “LFG [engineer/ranger/necromancer].” There are times where I see requests for Thieves and Elementalists for specific dungeons like CM and AC, and Mesmers, Warriors, and Guards are unanimously requested for dungeon runs.

That’s class imbalance if you ask me.

LOL

People thinking Mesmers, guardians, and warriors are the only classes in the Meta.

Please, please please please please go read up on the current meta!

Reasons you don’t see people asking for this class or that class: good groups don’t pug. Speedrunners who “speedrun” in pugs are usually not even playing the meta.

By the way, 3 warriors 1 guard 1 mesmer is so last year.

You sure?

I don’t see number two working. The skill level of players is all over the place although the bell curve leans more to the lower. If you make content that’s “challenging” but with a higher success rate (conflicting ideas imo) then you risk having the same content being a faceroll for everyone else. I don’t believe there’s a good middle ground for this.

If everyone just ran full zerker gear, defeating the watchknights in even under 6 minutes would have been an easy task, even at their former health.

But no, people refuse to run the best gear, then complain when Arenanet punishes them (and, by extension, everyone else when they fail the event) for using less than best-in-slot.

Also I doubt any of the Charr would simply let a insane plant waltz right into their city with her armies. Also they do have quite a few tanks parked inside waiting to be unleashed on anyone stupid enough to strike.

You’d be surprised. In a Personal story mission, a level 10 searing effigy walks right though the front door, right past all of their defenses, and if you don’t stop it, kills everyone in the black Citadel. I was not impressed.

Nice spin.

Except my point is the material market should not depend on champ trains.

With the addition of Magic Find being account wide, perhaps that might be a possibility when more people constantly run 200-300% and loot fat stacks of T6 from dungeon/fractal runs. Higher level fractals would also be nice too, and as would higher magic find loot chances from trash mobs dependent on reward level.

But as of right now, nerfing champ trains alone would hurt everyone.

The champ train creates supply, which you demand. If the champ train didn’t run, the price of EVERYTHING would skyrocket. They work tirelessly to keep prices low.

Living story?

Again with this Mary Sue term, it’s becoming more and more apparent that people obviously don’t understand what it means. Scarlet is NOT a Mary Sue by any means of the word. Look it up, it doesn’t mean what you think it means. A Mary Sue is a character which is infallible and a ‘do-gooder’ NOT a psychologically cracked, partial homicidal maniac.

I use Mary Sue & villain Sue together because the variation in the 2 is meaningless with regard to the failings of that character type. I don’t care that a Mary is a do-gooder & a villain is a do-badder. That’s not what makes up the horribly broken nature of the Sue. You can harp on semantics all you want, but when people are talking about Sues, it’s not because they are trying to pick nits on how they can attack someone’s labeling, it’s because they are trying to explain the spirit of such a broken character. As one of the definitions points out:
“Since there’s no consensus on a precise definition, the best way to describe the phenomenon is by example of the kind of character pretty much everyone could agree to be a Mary Sue.”

Yes, Scarlet “excells” in many fields but she had to LEARN them as expressed many times throughout the living story, a Mary Sue is naturally gifted with talents well beyond what her age would allow, and without any formal training. Also a Mary Sue is a character that is associated with horrifically written romantic undertones to normally a character well beyond her age.

So where is it said that these skills can’t be learned? never seen that. The point is that she’s over powered as wish fulfillment, not that was a particular method of gaining those skills. Saying “they can’t be learned” makes almost no character ever created a sue. I bet the Star Trek character the term is named after learned their skills. Albeit stupidly fast.
"She’s exceptionally talented in an implausibly wide variety of areas, and may possess skills that are rare or nonexistent in the canon setting. She also lacks any realistic, or at least story-relevant, character flaws — either that or her “flaws” are obviously meant to be endearing. "

And It’s so blatantly obvious that Scarlet’s “madness” is meant to be quirky, fun & sassy. Its probably her most ridiculous character feature.

And as for the lore being retconned or dismissed, I don’t really see anything that exemplifies that except for maybe the Krait. And even there it’s mentioned that she held something over them or tricked them to get them to agree to an alliance to begin with.

Are you kidding? Every alliance was built on the idea that she convinced them to join her & yet she has never once been shown to be even remotely well spoken, convincing or even realistic. There is so much lore bending to fit her she’s like a block hole. they could have explained everything she’s done as a manipulation of other groups skill & it would have been way more believable, but nope, it had to be her being awesome.

Also you’re making some rather large assumptions about Scarlet’s madness by comparing her to every other character that is manipulated in some way by a GOD from the realms of torment, considering you have no idea if that’s the case with her or not.

Ummm.. That’s the whole point. Unless they are going to retcon the gods even more & say they are nothing more than wizards (the only comparison they made with the gods & dragons was in the movement of the world & said that their power may rival that of the gods. which is kittened anyways) , then there’s pretty much no satisfying way to explain her acting so dumb. Insane & cartoon, sassy, wacky, sodomizer are not the same. & even if they come up with a mathematical 1+1=2 reason, she still stands out at wacky, dumb & totally unidentifiable as a person who is actually insane. Even worse, if they make it so that she did really see the eternal alchemy, ho man.. that would be the most epic Sue ever. Holy RP fanficness..
That’s why people are not looking forward to the end. Because the end will only explain WHY she is out-of-place, goofy & lore bending. After that happens, she will still be out-of-place, goofy & lore bending.

I wouldn’t call Scarlet a Mary sue, it’s just the sheer amount of Arc Welding required to establish the character as a legitimate threat, and the story feels like it retcons itself just to fit the character. Not to say that it has created some bad retcons, it’s just the idea that everything thus far had to be tied to Scarlet.

More about that here for anyone actually interested:

State of the game right now: The faster something dies, the less damage you take, the more tanky you are. In the words of the guild wars 2 community:

“Everyone should run full zerkers. Zerker gear is objectively better. The reason reason people don’t run zerkers is because they still need to learn when to dodge or haven’t mastered the dodge mechanics (Aka, Only noobs and bad players). Every point spent in any other category besides Power/Precision/Crit damage is a point wasted. The only reason reason to run anything else is because you’re running a Condition damage build.”

After nerf, hopefully, the drop in damage is going to going to discourage players from running full zerker builds. 10% less damage means the enemies are alive 10% longer, and are able to deal 10% more damage, and such elitism will be discouraged.

An Actual Problem with GW2

Recalibar.6482

I think they’re simply overdoing it with their recent announcement of tangible achievement point overhauls, as some of you complain about it. I tend to agree, but I don’t think of it as quite so black and white as to take one side or the other. There are clearly some broken mechanisms being added, and there are also some things that I thought should have already been in the game to begin with. Since we have a list now, I’d like to examine them individually:

Exclusive armor and weapon skin unlocks – I’ve mixed feelings about this one. Are you unlocking them or trading achievement points as some form of currency? I’d agree to a small occasional unlocking system perhaps, but I don’t much care for the idea personally. Think of new players vs. experienced players. That sort of thing.

Permanent account bonuses—This had better be kitten expensive. Say, 1000 per 1% increase in magic find?

Currencies – No, no, no, all of my no. This should never be a thing. Ever. No. Just no. Did I say no enough? Not only is it broken, but it’s a system that can’t be fixed no matter what the exchange rates are. These are clearly tangible benefits which in my opinion shouldn’t be in game. I feel the same way about the gem store, specifically everything worth gold can be bought with real money. I’m not a fan of that either. Gold, karma, laurals, should all be earned though their respective methods. This puts experienced players at a distinct advantage- especially laurals. If I can get better gear simply by being around longer- I don’t think that’s acceptable.

PvP Rewards— Skins and glory boosters. Skins really don’t matter in the context of arena fighting style, in my opinion. And for the most part, they don’t really matter. Considering glory boosters are easy to get, I don’t see a problem with those either.

WvW Rewards— No. See currencies.

Utility Items— These had better be kitten expensive. And in my opinion, not actually a thing. But since these are the items you’re encouraged to buy with real life currency; this is probably a better system.

Unique Titles— Why wasn’t this in the game before? I honestly think that this should have been added to start with. It’s intangible, but still shows off the player’s progression throughout the game. This is the best thing I could hope for in regards to achievement points, and was actually a bit disappointed by there not being an aggregate title for points earned.

See what I’m getting at though? Achievement points are for kitten, not “I wreck you because I’ve played longer.”

But then again, I’m a fan of games like Dayz, where people can hold you up or kill you “not because they’re ten levels higher than you are, but simply because they found a gun and you didn’t.” So, my opinion may not extend to any MMORPG model when all I play are typically MMOFPS/FPS.
