The difficult with water combat is the additional dimension for movement. We lack the controls for it, and therefore feel clumsy and awkward, instead of free. My recommendation would be to add movement/attack skills that directly propel the player vertically.

Nope, no naming conventions other than a good book. GW1 was very much the same among many players there, especially in pvp. I wouldn’t say it’s not RP, I’ve been involved in strict RP groups over the years, but nicknames are understandable not only IRL but for games. So, his real name is unknown to most, but goes by what people have come to call him After all, a lot of people IRL don’t know my given birth name either, only my nickname. But for Red Storm Rising, if you knew the book you would think it fits perfectly for a fire ele and even if Asura.

My Asura Nec has a different name, much like the same. Out of eight characters, only one has a conventional name, …until they look it up and find it’s the scientific name for a vegetable hehe (oh what race you think heh)

I confess I know neither the book nor the author, so I’m unable to rate it off that. Regardless, based off the general idea/sound/epithet: 6/10.

My new engineer: Rékki.
edit: I suppose I should add some reasoning behind the name.
-“Rékki” sounds like wreck-y; as in an engineer who wrecks
-Forum name is Requiem

Oh cool, I got lowest score on the page. Oh wait no I don’t, you do 5/10

I don’t know about you guys, but my Asura speaks English. When I played EQ1 for years, we had to learn other languages to speak in those languages (e.g. Dragon), otherwise it would look like jibberish. Typically names are based on the language you speak, and the names resemble that language even some with common words in the name. Asura speak English.

Why so offended? I evaluated it off my own interpretation of its merits, which is what you were asking for. If you ask a stranger to judge a name, don’t be angry when he does so.

OrdinaryOwl

My Asura is named Rexxa. I was trying to imitate Zojja’s name and kept mixing things to come up with it. Everyone calls me Rex in dungeons.

I rather like it. It’s very fitting lore-wise, and has a great personality.

I think it would be so slow as to actually induce drag on their already lackluster sloth.

Nonsense! There is no problem that cannot be solved by throwing an even BIGGER Golem at it. One day I’ll get funding for my VOLT-R0N project to unite all golems across Tyria into one super-golem. It’ll be unstoppable! Unstoppable, I tell you!

Mesmer Help vs Thief

Requiem.8769

Well, I couldn’t find any Mesmer v. Thief footage that I really liked, so I uploaded some of mine. It was hastily (poorly) done, so I apologize for the bad editing, but hopefully it’s of some use.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaeovbBeoEk

Tactical Notes:
Thieves are masters of burst and stealth. The first stage of a fight, then, is countering this burst. Evading, blocking, blinking, or stealthing cripples their attack. As such, these utilities are extremely useful against thieves:
-Decoy
-Blink
-Veil
The second aspect of a thief fight is the stealth. During this time the thief is
a) running away. Not much you can do about this.
b) Recovering health; removing conditions
c) preparing for the next attack.
For (b), AoEs (depends on your build; e.g. Chaos Storm; Blurred Frenzy) still hurt the thief. If you know/guess where he is, attack around that area. Channeled skills also continue to channel into stealth. If the thief has finished his burst (usually takes ~10s), he will soon re-enter stealth. Use your channel attacks at this time (E.g. Confusing Images; iDuelist).
For ©, bring your health up. Use your healing skill. Pop buffs. After ~4s, his stealth will end soon. Channel a block skill (Scepter #2).
Again, hope this helps some. Let me know if you have any questions about anything.

Build in this video is 20/20/30.

What do you think is the best build for roaming and duels?, condition cat or heavy 3.0 (shatter one)?. I find your condition cat build very strong for duels , however how do u deal with the lack of swiftness when roaming? Are all the stealths enough to scape in critical situations?, when using sword/pistol ( instead of staff) wouldn´t be better to use sigil of earth (along with sigil of battle) to produce more bleeds with BF?
I have been using a shatter build quite similar to yours, and I wanted to try a condition build.
I am looking forward to your tips.

When should I start crafting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Requiem.8769

Crafting is expensive, and difficult to effectively do in the beginning. However, once you do manage to get some money (usually by level forty or so) you can craft levels. I recommend starting with cooking. It takes ~2g to max it out, and will give you 10 levels. After that, all the other crafts are 5g+ to max.
http://gw2crafts.net/
This is an excellent guide to crafting. It calculates multiple possible paths to maxing a crafting discipline, and finds the cheapest one based on current prices. It also lists every necessary step, and will tell you how much gold you need to do each step.
To be honest, crafting is much better for leveling up your second, third, fourth, etc. character, rather than your first. But it still can help.

Actually, Lemongrass counters conditions extremely well, even against Pizza buffs. Conditions are calculated for all additional duration, then diminished condition duration. Hence:
100% + pizza (40%) = 140% duration
140% + lemongrass (-40%) = .6 × 140% = 84% duration.

Wrong, there was another threat, where some1 made experiments on those condition duration thingies and showed that inna video. And it turned out that it’s simply: 100%+40%-40%=100%

This isn’t a matter of “l2p” (the classic sign of someone defending something that’s broken and they play it) because there’s nothing that counters this at all. Lemongrass? Expensive and countered by Pizza. Lyssa/Melandru Runes? Pigeonhole you into being too specifically anti-condition while not being powerful enough to be worth it. Cleansing? Hardly anything can cleanse as fast as the conditions are re-inflicted.

I tried the Blackwater build I was told about. Things are NOT going well at all. Perhaps it is operator error but I am not getting crap for damage… and can survive a good amount but I mean… REALLY!? I couldn’t hurt a fly. I was thinking about 1v2-4. I mean, I can hardly handle 1v1 if they use any conditions at all. I had to adapt it for more condi removal but it just, it just doesn’t get it done. All warriors kill me with their stupid condi builds, thieves either kill me with condis or are about to lose and run, necros, you might as well just start running because it isn’t going to end well.

Try the Osicat 4.0 condi build, with perplexity runes. Has strong pressure, with a huge amount of survivability and stealth. If you’re going up against a condi, consider switching out veil for mantra of resolve (4 condi cleanse every 20 seconds).
There’s actually been a lot of angst over these runes, as people believe them to be overpowered. They are (mostly), and I recommend enjoying them while they last.

Gotta be truly bad to complain about the most OP class in the game and the most essential one in organized zerging.

Try playing a warrior. Maye then you’ll see how hard not to rely on a handicap: 8 second teleports/stealth/access to immunity to anything at any time/ clones attacking while you are running or dodging/ 10 sec invulnerability for 2secs on a weapon skill.

Yep..mesmers are truly in bad shape.

Also… 8s teleports? Unlimited immunity? 10 sec invulnerability for 2secs?
You really need to start playing a mesmer, mate.

Requiem.8769

The only actual complaint I saw in here was “slow”.
I too agree Mesmers are pretttttty slow. I think the real problem is that the other classes are too fast…But anyways…

The fact is every other profession does get a way (trait, utility, weapon, etc) to run faster than normal or leap consistently. Mesmers get Swiftness on a single off-hand weapon. They have no Utility skill that lets them run faster. They have no trait that lets them run faster out of combat nor any leaps. Nothing. I do agree with you Mesmers are annoyingly slow but they’re far from a burden in WvW and I manage to farm PvE perfectly fine with mine so I don’t know where that complaint came from.

Necros are slow.

Warriors are slow in the current meta build -mace/shield +LB- or S/S +LB.

Non BM rangers can’t get away as easily.

Guardians are slow.

Mesmers have access to portals, blink, staff teleports -just link blink and staff teleports- swiftness wall/wall pull and have traits that give them increased speed for every illusion:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Compounding_Celerity

Every class has to sacrifice some utility or damage skills in order to get access to mobility -with exception to the broken thief class, of course-.

I don’t see why mesmers should be treated in any way special, do you? Learn to adapt and compromise like the rest of the gw2 community.

Necros have a 25% run signet
Warriors have several leaps and a trait that lets them run 25% faster with a melee weapon
Rangers have a few leaps and a 25% run speed signet
Guardians have leaps and can easily maintain perm swiftness.

You completely and utterly missed the point to literally everything I was saying and I kindly ask you to try reading next time.

You can have 30% speed and more using http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Compounding_Celerity

If you don’t use it..not our problem..it’s like a necro saying I don’t use the signet and I want to run faster. Or a warrior saying I don’t use a sword/GS and I want to move faster.
Again..not every ranger equips weapons for leaps and signets for movement speed.

We can’t have everything in this game or in RL and so can’t you. Just the way things work.

Anet provided you with Staff teleports, blinks, portals, stealth and Compounding celerity to move around . Think of using them.

I would be happy as a warrior to have access to 8 secoond cool down teleports, portals, Instant teleport blinks that breaks stun and stealth and I don’t want leaps on my weapon skills. Once the other classes get these skills then I will wholeheartedly support more snickers more mobility to mesmers.

Here I think this might help a bit:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/List_of_mesmer_skills

Oh dear. Perhaps you might like to play a mesmer before you embarrass yourself further. The topic was out of combat mobility.
1) Compounding Celerity: can only be used in combat, as we can only summon illusions in combat.
2) Portal: used for back-tracking. Does nothing for getting myself from point A to B
3) Blink: an extra 900 every 30 seconds. Oh, goody.
4) Staff teleports (Phase Retreat): Moves you backwards; i.e., you retreat.
5) Stealth: We don’t move faster in stealth. At all.

We mesmers are quite remarkable in many ways, yet out of combat mobility isn’t one of them.
But I feel this is rather silly point to argue about, anyway. Mesmers are in a nice place, and I love playing mine.

Requiem.8769

Theres a topic in the engi forum of a guy abusing a new rune to stack alot of confusion on players with great results.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/Rune-of-perplexity-Here-is-my-experience/first#post2696052

I know that the key to this success its the rapid stacking of alot of confusion. My mesmer has almost been more of the “Cant touch this” kind of set up rather than “Stop hitting yourself” kind.
Obviously this rune will be fixed before long, but I was wondering can mesmer who dont use this rune but still focus on applying confusion be just as effective?
And if not, why not?

To answer your question, no, I don’t think they can. The rune in question is called Rune of Perplexity, I believe, and its entire focus is on confusion, with confusion duration (possibly bugged), confusion stacking, and confusion damage (condition damage). There is no other rune I know of that is so confusion based. My question to you would be: if you want to focus on confusion damage, why wouldn’t you take them? Frankly, without these runes, confusion isn’t a viable center for a build.
The key to this rune is the confusion on interrupt. 5 stacks for 10s is absolutely incredible. This allows any class with interrupts to have instant access to a huge amount of confusion. Mesmers have interrupts, so we benefit, and so too do other classes – e.g., engies, such as Koroshi.
I run these runes on a condi/interrupt build that I’ve tailored to fit them. And it’s insane. I can spike up to 15 confusion fairly easily. What makes these runes so unstoppable is the confusion on interrupt, without limits. In the name of balance, I would add an internal cooldown of at least 10 seconds. But it’s going to be fun while it lasts.

stealth is by far the most oped skill in all of GW2.

Oh? How so?
One cannot attack when in stealth, and cannot be attacked -except when one is hit by AoE or inductions. It merely serves as a pause for the fight – a pause that is imperfect, too. Its sole advantage lies in reaction times. You attack, and the enemy must react. Against very new players this is a large advantage – against experienced ones, hardly a factor. Especially when the stealth class must give up a great deal of survivability in order to stealth.

This is the last I’ll say on the cloak, as it’s good to talk about the other options, too, and I don’t want to take away from that. Anyway, here are the reasons I love the concept of a cloak OH:

Its uses:
1) blind
2) confusion
3) skillful block

Its ambience:
Gentlemen duelists, of precision, skill, and deception.

Its novelty:
The fact that it’s never been done in any game before is something I find as a positive. It is new, it is fresh, it is interesting. The sheer originality would endear me to it – and yet it is also historically realistic.

Its potential mechanics:
As an off-hand, it could be a skill that requires, well, extreme skill .
E.g. a 3 chain skill, where pressing the skill again moves onto the next chain phase (i,ii,iii)-
i) flick: whip the cloak at your opponents face (1s induction; 600m) —> applies blind if concluded
-->ii) snap!: applies 3 stacks of confusion if completed (1s induction; 400m)
—->iii) parry: blocks an attack (.5s induction)
—-> if successful block, grants stealth (1s) and applies 5 stacks of confusion; cooldown is halved
—--> if no block, grants stealth (1s)
As such, with this weapon you have the choice of either
i) blinding
ii) applying confusion
or
iii) blocking + stealthing
where each option becomes progressively more difficult to pull off, yet more rewarding. Personally, I would love to see something like this in the game.

I think its time we expanded on the cloak. During the Beta Weekend events the back slot was actually labeled “cloak” In other words, cloaks are already a piece of ARMOR. You cannot rename a piece of armor as a weapon. There are no gauntlets that double as weapon slots. There are no back slots that double as weapon slots either. Please review the talk, topic, and other forum posts in regards to cloaks, they are/will be back slot items so there is NO point assuming it will be included as a weapon when it is so clearly not intended to be, nor will it be. And Requiem, for the record, we also have mantles already thank you very much, they fit in our shoulder slots.

Adding link: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cloak

Did you even click on the link by Elwood?
Here are a few quotes:

“The next most commonly available weapon a gentleman will have at hand, after the dagger, is the cloak. "
“Three wards apply with the cloak as well. The first is the high ward, and particularly deserves its name here, since the cloak is also almost at chin level. "
“Parrying with the cloak while hitting, without a void, has little certainty and great peril in it, and yet if well done is excellent. Great acuity and deep judgement is needed, for as the enemy’s point approaches, you must wait until it is just within the hand’s reach, and then beat it down with the cloak while delivering a blow yourself. "
“The cloak may also be used offensively. Holding the cloak by the collar or hem it may be used to entangle a blade or beat it to the side giving you the time to offend your opponent. It may also be thrown over your opponent’s head thus blinding them temporarily. Throwing the cloak is dangerous in that you may lose it and not accomplish your aims. It may also be twirled or flicked at your opponent to confuse them. They will not know if you are trying to blind them with a throw or are maneuvering to entangle their blade.”

Cloak, in this case, does not refer to a piece of armor. It refers to a cloth carried in the hand, used to catch the opponent’s weapon, as well as blind and distract the opponent. Your sole objection, then, stems from terminology, and it’s feeble objection at that, as there currently are no cloaks. Yet let’s say this is a reasonable objection – fine. Rename it. E.g. Cape? Amictus? Batman’s Handkerchief? The options are limitless.

Shatter vs Phantasm vs Conditions (in WvW)

Requiem.8769

I am a relatively new mesmer, and the condition build is the only one I have used. As such, I cannot speak to how it compares to other builds – but I can describe my experience with the condition build. It is, in a word, incredible. There really isn’t a single class that I’m afraid of. The survivability is excellent, with a great deal of passive effects, as well as the a large amount of stealth. This stealth also allows you to troll/flee from zergs (as your preference lies), snagging the occasional kill while they dance in frustration, or to actively engage groups of 3 fairly easily. The damage -well, to quote the Osicat, “it melts faces.” The only main problem is a joyfully frequent one, and that is when your enemies flee before you. Your only chase abilities are 1(blink) + 2(phase retreat [staff]) or 2(ileap [sw/pistol]).
So, in conclusion, I would recommend trying it out. You could either test it in PvP (in which case, you substitute S. Runes of the Undead for the S. Runes of Perplexity), or could buy a cheap version with masterworks.
Happy hunting.

Requiem, cloaks are going to be/are cosmetic items and not weapons nor will they ever be for that reason so you need to wipe that off your list. Even if that were not the case a cloak is not a weapon and thus has no skills associated with its use, you wear it not fight with it. Or can you imagine the baseball cap of terror? Or how about the fuzzy Asuran bunny slippers of face eating? Seriously, some things are too obviously not compatible.

Whips are not pre-existing weapons so I find them severely unlikely, but the weapon would certainly be welcomed by me if it was so no problems there. The cane I am not sure where you are going, is that a scepter or a new weapon type? Either way I think a cane would be fashionable for a mesmer, although I don’t see it being implemented unless its a fancy scepter. The rest I have no problem with, would like to see all of those I haven’t mentioned on a mesmer.

The mesmer is a class of deception and drama. We are magicians – and have you ever seen a magician perform? Think of the torch OH “weapon”. It is of the same ilk as a cloak would be.
So, how would a cloak work? I suppose the word “cape” or “mantle” might suit you better. A cloth held in hand, to be swirled and flourished. Picture a bullfighter; it is similar to that.

The cane is merely an extension of this flair and drama, and would work in ways appropriate to this. E.g., the (4) skill could be a dance which blurs the mesmer, stacking confusion in a 5m range.

Hmm. Some options I’d be interested in:
Whip (MH)
Dagger (MH, OH)
Pistol (MH)
Cloak (OH)

Some possible applications of such weapons:

MH:
whip: (1,2,3)single-target. (1). Burst/Bleed, (2)CC (3) Confusion. ~ranged/melee
dagger: (1,2,3)single-target burst+bleed/confusion. ~melee
pistol: single-target burst. ~ranged

OH:
cane: (4) AoE confusion. (5) Phantasm randomly immobilizes/stuns/blinds
cloak: (4) stealth, blind. (5) Phantasm grants stealth.
dagger: (4) burst. (5) Phantasm attacks, then stealths itself.

You did have a few nice ideas in there, but a lot of your ideas are just plain stupid or don’t fix the problems you have. Like the one that targets zerging and the one that targets camp flippers, just NO. Those two ideas are HORRIBLE, people should not be punished for having a preferred playstyle because you don’t like it. People should be encourage to do every sort of playstyle that they want, not discouraged to do them all.

Oh. In that case, my preferred playstyle involves a magical flying unicorn that carries me into any tower or keep, at which point the enemies immediately defect to my side and build a shrine in my honor. Additionally, my steed can poo on demand, and rain death from above whilst I stay out of range.
It’s my preferred playstyle. Don’t discourage it.
Make it happen Anet.
