That’s exactly the answer I’m not looking for, “Deal with it! *kitten *”. that’s exactly why people stop playing, do you think a player who likes WvW want to see every time he logs in the ‘outnumbered’ buff and at most 10 people playing wvw? even when the server population says “Very high”, players just go to a different game and that’s it. I’m trying to bring out the problem so hopefully Anet will do something if enough people complain

Yes, actually. I usually seek out the BL that gives me that very buff – I have the most fun there.

My own server crashed and burned about this time last year, and within six or seven weeks we found ourselves in T8. Other than a group of <20 WvWers (and not all on at the same time, I might add), we didn’t really have anything going for us.

But we found fights and some fun, despite losing week after week, and then people brought their friends and guildies in once in a while, and we’re back up in silver now feeling our way forward.

You can’t play on SF like you would have remembered it before you left, so find what you enjoy and do that. If you can’t then yeah, transfer, but I wouldn’t start like that. Can you solo camps? Can you wrest anything away from BP or SoR before they respond?

This is how it starts. People will come in because they see what you’ve been doing. It takes a while, but it picks up if you have the patience for it.

The idiotic match ups killed Crystal Desert. We’ve had weeks of getting our kittens handed to us and everyone stopped playing WvW. I don’t even recognize any of the commanders anymore. They all left.

You certainly blobbed all over the place enough last week to make me doubt the “… and everyone stopped playing WvW” part.

Yeah we had a blob occasionally last week but we see outnumbered buff more often than we blob.

I saw the same against you guys, except during NA nighttime of course.

Player-created content doesn’t get special consideration by company whose game they’ve eked out a niche in – world stunned.

Where’s the special content for the culture of jumping puzzle ambushers? What about the harvesting farmers who brave enemy borderlands in search of carrots while under fire?

WHEN WILL THEY BE HEARD?!

Those players make up either a very small portion of the player base & or a very annoying portion.

Larger scale coordinated PvP AKA GvG however has had a ton of people asking for it to become a real thing, not just something player sponsored.

So, the biggest player base in GW2 is PvE, can we agree on that? A statistically tiny slice of the player base is WvW, and a slice is also both.

Of that tiny slice there’s a subset, not even on all servers, who occasionally get together to play PvP with more people than the official PvP maps hold.

Since they’ve managed it for this long, I can’t see how there’d be any real priority to do anything about it, especially as it’s an unsupported game mode and there’s plenty of supported ones that need attention.

Out of all the sieges golems can be crit and conditioned putting them at a much higher disadvantage then other sieges. Its also very hard to remove these conditions on the golem.

Anyways saying you have to suicide and respawn on the other side of the map just to weaken their OP siege should prove that it is OP.

Embellishing a bit, aren’t you? Since this is a post about defending against omega golem rushes, where would you be defending that your spawn is on the other side of the map?

The “suiciding” means that there’s no point in just milling around behind the gate waiting for it to drop – you get out there with whoever isn’t manning siege or protecting siege and you put pressure on the group that can’t proceed until the gate is down. If you die on it, so be it – you respawn and haul tail back and abuse them while they try to break through inner. The major advantage to inner being that you can have whoever is running back set up addition siege along the outer wall to compliment the inner wall siege, and you can bring serious fire to bear on the golems.

I’ve done it, the OP has done it (because I’ve watched him do it), and other posters have done it. What do you want – a ten supply trick that detonates all golems within a 5000 radius?

500 badges is trivial for a non-casual player. For a more casual player, it’ll take a bit longer but it’s not some epic quest.

If it was trivial they wouldn’t cost 2.5 – 3 gold per golem.

Money cost of buying five alpha siege golem blueprints (without badges) plus a markup. Price mystery solved. If you’re really going to argue that 500 badges is a prohibitive number, then I’ve got to think you’re on a slow enough server that omega rushes aren’t the de facto tactic, unless your opponents are heavy farmers and also invest that into WvW. Because otherwise, it’s no big deal.

Mortar placements are easily taken out by ground force AoE.

Which you are supposed to protect with your ACs, before the golems get there. If the golems are within range to hit the ACs, they’re close enough to get hit by the mortars.

Plus instead of doing the “build a treb behind a gate to kill rams” thing, you build it so that you can still do the aoe through the gate, but can also arc over the wall to hit at least some of the area a bit back from the gate.

Works on omega drivers who are trying to stay spread out from each other but still within range of the gate. Their range is already known, and dropping large aoe blasts will hit something. Their ground crew if not the golems themselves.

Ideally you use the ranged siege while your people are attacking/suiciding on the golems/zerg. I’ve suicided omega rushes down many times. And if it doesn’t succeed on that particular objective, then they have a bunch of damaged golems when they get to the next one.

With mastery golems can stand in siege fire long enough to wipe all siege and still have plenty of health.

And to people calling them pay to win – all it takes it 500 badges of honor and a few skill points to make one. If you don’t have ten people on your server who can afford that then you’re at a more serious disadvantage than a few golems.

500 badges + 10 Mithril Ore + 10 Elder wood logs+ 3 skill points for a single golem.. why do think they are almost 3 gold each on the black lion trading company.. they are very expensive.. pay to win expensive.

Mithril ore and elder wood logs are among the most common crafting materials in the game – salvage almost anything you get and you’ll get these.

Three skill points. Even with loads of ascended recipes, two legendaries, and stacks of superior siege the skill points come in faster than I can spend them. I’m sure most people who are level 80 would be able to manage three.

So, you can’t find ten people on your server who each have these things to make a single omega? There’s your “pay to win” overwhelming force. Not so expensive though, is it?

Only really useful sieges to kill an entire zerg in front of your door/wall are arrow carts that can be destroyed by omegas in a few seconds.

There is no counter to a Zerg + Omega Combo, unless you also have a zerg of nearly the same size that can simply wipe every enemies.

Well, I did say “normal” and not “balanced”. And the OP was talking about a week in which the rank 4 server was against the rank 9 and 10 servers. So by comparison, 4 5 and 6 for tier two and 7 8 and 9 for tier three is about as normal as it gets.

There isnt any significant difference between rank 4, 5, 6 or 7 to either of the other two servers in T3.

You see that in last week’s matchup there was a T4 in that mix? It’s significantly different to T4 to have a T2 server against it.

And I don’t mean like the current 80 man limit (that might as well be a 500 man limit for most servers, since we rarely cap it out anyways). Perhaps lock off a map so that no server can have more than 10 players more than any other server. Maybe that way people will start to leave servers that are outrageously outnumbering other servers. Otherwise, why would they ever leave if they always win?

My favourite game mode has been ruined due to population imbalance for the last 2 months, and it’s going to end up making me quit the game. Fix your kitten, Anet! Stop neglecting WvW. kitten , siegerazer’s rams can’t even use their #2 skill. Zero attention is being paid to WvW. ZERO!

Highlighted for hilarity – the last TWO months?! Change that to years and you’d be a bit closer. And while population is important, myself and one teammate just held a camp for an hour against ten people, and then the nearby paper tower for 45 min against the same bunch.

You’ll have to learn to deal, like everybody else does.

If bag space is getting tight and, assuming you don’t want to splash out ten gold for a twenty slot bag, consider running some fractals. You can buy the twenty slot fractal bags fairly quickly using the fractal relics (dungeon tokens) you get.

First post doesn’t make me a troll buddy it just means I after many years of gaming have learned to avoid forums for the most part. However, I needed to vent after this last weeks match up with my server facing Fort Aspen and being completely out done by nothing more then numbers. 20 Alpha Golems in a single zerg seriously???

I am glad to see my post generated some positive discussion though.

You got that matchup because SoS has a high enough rating that it will sometimes get a T2 fight, which means that a T2 server will be displaced. You just had the lucky to get FA is all – it has to go somewhere.

I’m working on karma gear and saving my crafting mats for when I get good runes, like scholar or travelers.

Remember that you won’t be able to salvage your runes later if you put them on karma gear. Have you looked at the named armor sets with the stats you want on the trading post?

I don’t think I was clear, I’m saving my mats to make exotics to put scholars runes or travelers runes, and thus I can salvage them. The karma gear are place holders until I can farm enough mats. I only have about 6 blood so far. I haven’t decided which. I got one travelers from an exotic piece already, so maybe I’ll go that route. No more locus sigil for me.

Yeah, I saw “mats” and “scholar’s runes” and figured you were just waiting on the lodestones to make the runes.

Those are two very different sets of runes though – I’m not sure I’d use traveler’s on a necro since there are much better choices that will give a huge increase to your damage or survivability. Can I guess that if you’re thinking scholar’s runes you’re intending to stay as a power necro?

I don’t know much about WvW history, new and all. But I do know that some of my server-mates were talking about one of our better commanders and his guild leaving to join your server.

Oh? Which one is yours?

People were pretty upset about it in ts. People get attracted to servers that do well, thus I imagine you also had an influx of new players to go with the bootstraps.

We really didn’t. It’s only since we’ve risen to silver (within the past month) that we’ve seen it happening. We’d get the odd transfer of a player or three before that, but not groups. It happened internally – the core of <20 people that were left in WvW when we hit the bottom kept playing (usually losing, if you look at our matchup history) but then a few more would come in, then a few more. Guildies of people who played WvW would come in for a bit. Once in a while there’d be an event, and people would come in. Casuals became more common, and there comes a point where they’re solid enough that they’re not really casual anymore, even if they don’t play often.

Lots of little things like that. Plus, and it can’t be denied, other servers going through their own crashes.

When you have low numbers (or are alone) you have to do what you can to enjoy yourself in WvW, even if it’s just flipping the camps (more fun on the BLs than in EBG) or taking the odd tower. With more people joining you, you can do things in parallel (gets the camps done in half the time, and can run supplies to the tower ram twice as fast).

In fact, if you are so outnumbered that you can’t take a tower, and don’t have enough people to pop Siegerazer, then flip an enemy camp and siege it up. You’ll get some fights and, while they may overrun you eventually, you’ll have some fun. More people will come in time.

I was looking at all the guilds and it was rare to see more than a few people from the same guild. Seems like my server suffers from a lack of unity.

No, we’re like this too. If you go to the matchup threads you’ll see servers that post youtube videos of current matchups – our groups tend to be hodgepodges as well. In addition, a fair number of WvWers on our server belong to multiple WvW guilds. CoT and EBAY and oG and Woe all have the same people as a fairly sizable chunk of their members. And we have smaller guilds galore as well.

But people work together and respond to each other, so it works out well enough.

Also I died trying to take a camp, I tried. I didn’t make it. But I don’t have any rankings(I got to Solider today), or good gear, or much of anything. I did okay. I killed two of the guards and everything else was at 30 or 40%. I actually almost rallied focusing one, so close! So I think now with my slightly better gear, more experience, and sporting exotic sigils (huge different between rare and exotic sigils), I may succeed. /fingers crossed

Get their attention then go around a corner or behind something. That will bunch them all up together, so you can drop more damage on them. If you’re picking targets, take out the scouts first as they’ll blind you, making the whole thing take longer.

Don’t be shy about dodging out of the mess, running behind something else (so they have to stop hitting you and chase you) and popping your heal. You’ll get it, and you’ll feel good about doing it.

Dropped down to dead last less than a year ago, currently at rank 14. Don’t depend on someone to tag up for your WvW experience.

I had no idea it took only a few people in rams to make a server go up 8 or so ranks! Wow! I’ll buy a ram and get right on that. :P

Dang lazy WvWers, they just need to learn to pull up their bootstraps like you did!

People getting things done attracts other people who want to do things in WvW. And if it turns out that you play at an unsociable hour, there’s lots you can do by yourself too.

But yeah, we pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps. You’d be hard pressed to find much in the way of recruitment by us – it all just became critical mass over time. It’s less fun when it’s just you trying to do everything yourself, but when you recognize the realities of the situation and do what you can, it starts the trend. shrugs

So my server is ranked 2nd to last in WvW, it’s weeks between when I pop in there and actually see a commander so that’s out. This leaves EOTM as my only WvW like experience to actually do something and have fun.

I don’t remember the last time I wasn’t outnumbered. It’s pathetic. Attached a screen shot of tonight. Totally dominated by other two sides, literally getting camped as far back as they could get us. This game is a joke of balance.

I won’t be buying any gems and especially not an expansion if this isn’t fixed. This isn’t a unique situation we are camped at spawn, regularly. The outnumbered buff isn’t enough, the zergs on my team are so small a single arrow cart is enough to hold us off until they can come farm their bags. It’s a horrible experience and i’m sick of it.

Fix your game.

The problem is, you’re treating WvW like a PvE event if you pop in to look for commander tags and then go to EotM when you don’t. It doesn’t work like that where you are – start by learning how to flip camps solo, and before the white swords come up.

Once you’ve mastered that, get yourself some rams/catapults and announce in map chat that you’re going after x tower and go do it. If there are people on, they’ll join you. Then you have more bodies to work with.

Please tell me what is the point of matching a server against another server that outnumbers them by a dozen to one? Just to see one side totally run up the score? Oh I know it’s so that any new players who enter WvW are just cannon fodder for whatever server is on top.

Because the difference in ranks from first to 24th or 27 isn’t a smooth line, but a series of steps – some of them quite steep. Sorry, but it’s just like that. Couple that with the slight randomizer in the matchup algorithm and sometimes you get terribly unbalanced matchups.

Who would you rather be matched up against that you think would be fairer?

Hello

I’m looking for a new server and guild to join.
Looking for a friendly social atmosphere but one that takes a more serious approach to WvWvW.

I main a mesmer but have 80’s of all professions and all geared in exotics or above. I am willing to learn new tactics and open to new build ideas especially with my melee classes. My mesmer, necro and ranger are my strongest professions. Warrior and thief are my weakest. I am constantly looking to improve.

I have been a player since the very beginning of GW2. I’m open to pve, pvp and other activities but would like to focus on wvwvw. I commanded for the first year of gw2 on Darkhaven. I later left and went to Gate of Madness, learning their tactics and builds and improving my own play and commanding styles. I then returned to Darkhaven to find it worse then when I left it and am seeking to find a less chaotic server.

Isn’t there a penalty/reward? After all, people do play for points. You expressed your concern about getting your points contribution reduced, if you didn’t care about losing/winning, then why should you be worried?

If this game were more balanced (I’m not proposing mechanisms, the game would also be more balanced if every server simply had more balanced populations at all hours as well), then there could be even more of an incentive to play for points. There could even be more rewards tied to it. I’m not saying that people should be rewarded for winning matches in WvW as it is, but I’m sure plenty would love a game that had more emphasis on strategy.

An inherent “penalty”, not an imposed one.

Making someone’s own contributions worth less than someone else doing the same contribution but during an arbitrary slice of the day is imposed. There has to be pretty compelling (for all concerned) reasons to impose anything on people, and that criteria hasn’t been met. Worse – the thinking behind it is parochial and also (likely, based on the OP’s hourly server performance) fairly biased.

When my own server fell through the ranks to 24th place we had huge dead zones as well, and of course it’s frustrating to sign in and be ticking at zero. But unless the OP also won’t take an objective unless there are defenders, the idea that a server’s assets being taken should be mitigated based on the time of day makes zero sense.

It’s also one of those things which, in overcoming it, becomes a sign that your server might be ready to move up in the rankings… as the servers above you tend to have more diversity in their population activity.

It’s not a server recruitment problem. Recruiting players to fill that time slot for your server is the bandage that fails to address the underlying causes.

No recruitment of night crew will solve the issue, because all that does is shift the burden from one server to another. The population playing during certain time slots is simply much, much smaller, this has to be taken into consideration in the design of the game.

I gave it a second thought and came to the conclusion that I’m okay with “neutral” players who can enter all towers and keeps, BUT,

“neutral” players should still be killable. I can kill neutral mobs, so I should also be able to kill “neutral” players.

Under the condition that I can kill them, I’m fine with “neutral” players who can enter all towers and keeps.

Also “neutral” players should not be able to attack lords of course and they can’t cap anything.

As long as the same applies to PvE – you can enter “neutral” mode and ghost through the maps collecting all of the POIs, vistas and waypoints… and heart completion just by talking to them.

And if that sounds ridiculous, you’ll know why it sounds so ridiculous to give people a pass out of building a little siege and getting the WvW points they need.

You know what this really comes down to? PvErs do the PvE stuff first, and it’s easy. You can solo all of PvE’s map completion (I have multiple completions, so yes I know), and they leave WvW until last. But the WvW maps can’t just be done whenever you feel like it, so it seems like this huge obstacle to them. If they really want completion, they should be there on Friday night reset (when the maps are the most fluid) or else find their server’s strongest WvW times (or the opponent’s weakest times) and join in. Not only will they get what they need, they’ll actually help out their server by doing so.

They’ve benefited from those bonuses that WvW has generated for PvE for all of this time, so it’s high time they rolled up their sleeves and gave something back.

Suggestions to scale points by timezone has been brought up many times before and it doesnt work. If scaling where to happen, it need to be based on actual players on the map.

Then we also have the people whose prime-time fits neither NA nor EU prime-time.

Not to mention people that work other than typical 9-5 jobs, which might only be able to play during the day or during late night/early morning.

A player is actually more valuable to his server during off hours, takes less people to do the job of many during prime. If enemy servers don’t have those 5 nighcappers that can counter our group of five, then our five players can be responsible for 600+ tick.

Why should nighcappers’ time be more valuable than time of players during prime hours?

And why should they be less valuable? Not to mention your example seems extremely exaggerated.

My party flipping a tower and your party flipping a tower, regardless of whether it’s an empty tower or a defended tower, still ends up with my efforts earning only half for my server what your efforts do.

Let’s imagine that this difference in point allocation were proposed outside of the divisive context of time zone favouritism. Would you still say that this kind of penalty is unfair? I think there’s a valid argument to be made that PvP should play a bigger role in server score than PvD, and that taking a defended tower should be more rewarding for a server than taking an undefended one.

I don’t believe that a crude fix like the OP proposed is fair or appropriate, but there are alternatives to the existing PPT system.

Like I said, he could encounter an empty OR a defended tower, the same as I could, but he thinks his server should benefit more from his time than other times.

If PvP is to play a bigger role, then it comes down to increasing either the ppk or the points per stomp – not in in penalizing timezones based on an “everybody works nine to five where I live” sort of attitude.

How exactly would it be that you are being penalized? Given equality during prime time you would still have the advantage. I said in original post same rewards just less points. How do those points hurt you personally in regards to rewards? The poster who said night crews are more valuable is totally correct. It makes YOU-the night person-more valuable so I think the pots calling the kettle black. Your night capping everything with little to no resistance makes MY efforts mean less, I’m just looking to make matches better. I have to actually fight other people to get my server points.

And see, it’s that assumption at the end that makes this fail – given three servers with roughly equal night shifts, you’d still make the efforts of all of them worth half of what tend to be the blobbier hours of play. Why?

And I didn’t mention personal rewards even once – I said I was being penalized for the times that I may choose to play in a 24 hours persistent game mode. That’s your own server’s problem to sort out, it’s not something that everybody else needs to be punished for.

Pretty snotty attitude, implying that non-prime time hours are all PvDoor, but it shows the real problem here. Instead of lobbying to try to get people penalized, you should be lobbying for ppk to be a permanent addition to WvW.

Or making sure you cap the ruins on all three BLs the first thing you do when you get into WvW – then your fights will earn you the points you want so much.

I imagine for the scorched earth, and Never surrender they would need preset conditions and cooldowns, for example scorched earth can only be used when outer gate or walls are at 60% or lower with a 10 min cooldown. Never Surrender can only be used when Inner gate/walls are below 10%?

Hmm I thought for this one it would be good as with the golem at half speed moving so incredibly slow that most objective using this tactic would actually slow down the normal objective capturing speed, and with the golem being unable to traverse the Sharpened Stakes there is no way a siege tower could.

I like your idea with changing the disease to be a traited ballista thing though because right now they just feel so useless in most situations.

Well, it’s easier to pick holes in something than create, so I like the way you were thinking.

Since siege towers would let you just bypass even T3 walls, it has to be a no. Even mesmers dropping portals for people have to (if they’re playing legitimately) have breached the gates/walls at some point, or have camped inside undetected when it last flipped.

And I love me some ballista! Amazingly useful and seriously under utilized in game!

If there are more people on at a given time, then their individual efforts matter less.

That said, this is a global game AND not everybody works or goes to school on a nine to five schedule. When I feel like playing in the morning (west coast NA, PST time zone) why should I be penalized for it? Same for people who work afternoons and get home at midnight and feel like playing for a couple of hours before sleeping.

Or stay at home parents who get in some game time while the kids have a nap or are at school.

Or when I move overseas, want to keep playing my game, but my daylight hours are different to NA?

This, as always, is a dumb idea. If you have dead times on your server, it’s ridiculous to penalize OTHER people for it.

Here’s some ideas I had feel free to share your own.
1) Sharpened Stakes – Form a defensive line beyond the outer wall of your keep mounding up soil and hammering sharpened stakes creating a two fold obstacle. This forces the enemy sieging your keep to clump together more once they get over the barrier, while at the same time making it near impossible terrain for golems to cross. (ex. the ones used around the fort here

Maybe. Additional upgrades are a fine idea, but they should be greyed out for the server in first place, and they should be (temporarily) rendered useless if said server moves into first. No point in letting a server in a runaway first get ever further away.

2) Scorched Earth – Set the area between the outer wall and the Sharpened Stake wall on fire, using a percentage of current supply but burning all targets in the area for 2 seconds for every one second they stay in that area. The fire lasts 60 seconds doing 7% damage (of total health) to any siege located within its area of effect every two seconds.

3) Never Surrender – Burn all remaining supply in the keep, but this comes with some consequences? (all gates are opened?)

Can you imagine what the trolls that burn your supplies making rams in the courtyard would do with this?

1) Siege Tower – Must be pushed by a golem to move, while golem is pushing the siege tower it moves at 50% speed. This siege structure cannot move up stairs or through broken down gates. If moved next to a wall or close enough, allows players to climb onto the enemy’s walls (or if close enough make a jump for it)

I’ve always wondered this as well. Especially as I main a Mesmer with Rodgort at times and then as you suggested; incinerator with thief. I can test this out when I get home much later tonight and post results.

What Anet can do is simply guarantee map colors rotate every week and that no server has the same color in 3 straight matchups. The problem with this is what happens if there is a new server in the matchup and 2 servers involved in the matchup are both supposed to be a specific color. But anyways quit complaining about it, get a group together, find a group w/e its not hard to map it can be done solo, with a small group, etc. Ive done all 4 maps on 10 toons in t1, silver/bronze tiers its not that bad.

If more PvE-centric people joined the people in WvW so as to get their POIs, they might find that they help influence their server changing colour in subsequent weeks.

Also PvErs, here’s a tip: when your side owns a fair chunk of a map in WvW, get the POIs you can, then do it for all of your alts – even the non-80 ones. You’ll appreciate this in the future, and we’ll appreciate that you’re not back here complaining about our competitive game mode and how it should be made “easier” for people who don’t intend to stick around anyway.

An excellent idea!

Hopefully the week before the announcement that there will be a tournament, transfers up get locked. That way, instead of a short (tournament length) time of excitement and subsequent months of despair and turmoil, it’ll be the other way around – the effects on servers in the wake of the tournaments have been horrible to go through, although the variety in matchups during have been interesting at least.

And they should stay locked. If you want to go up, earn it by playing and not by paying.

I really feel bad for the players who joined servers like Devona’s Rest/Anvil Rock/ET or any of the lower servers because when they enter WvW they’ll never get to experience the true glory of the game mode. Just a baron wasteland.

I don’t know who this Baron Wasteland is, but you know that ET shot up the ranks from dead last, and even though it has peaked and dropped somewhat, it’s still in the top tier of bronze, right? Still lots of fights at that level.

There’s some exceptions (KN…) but that’s how T8 tends to be, when Americans are sleeping. T8 isn’t dead for NA prime, but it certainly is at all other times of the day

I’ll drop the alt into T1 for a couple of weeks and then be the authority of what it’s like, regardless of what long-term denizens of it say. Makes as much sense.

Server population has almost no correlation with WvW.

And gaining a bunch of new players won’t help lower tier servers. They’ll just go up the rankings until they get stomped by the highest tier servers.

Only if a server is ranked dead last week after week should they get any players funnelled to them. And then it would only be a temporary solution, because another server would probably take their place.

Such a solution would actually be quite good, and the temporary nature of it also works.

If you made whatever was the lowest ranked (24th in NA) the default starting world for new accounts, that’s as good a way as any to potentially add people to a WvW scene that needs them.

Sure, lots/most of the new players won’t go into WvW anytime soon (or ever), but they might. And a single person in WvW at the bottom can make a difference. People making extra accounts or wanting to join their friends can pay for the move (or their friends can).
