When the sides are fairly even, battles can be a lot of fun. Otherwise it gets boring fast.

I’m living proof that it’s not possible for some people to complete. LOL Sadly I’ve practiced and practiced every day hoping to get faster. I can make it to the presents, but they are all exploding by the time I get there. I don’t know how to go faster and not miss jumps.

Well, I have to update my last post. I finally managed to complete the jump puzzle. I’m a 64 year-old lady (I know .. how many grandmas play mmos); I was bound and determined to keep trying. So I practiced every day for an hour or so. I read tips, watched videos, and asked for help from other players. It all paid off. Truly, if I can do it, then there’s hope for everyone. If you really want to finish it, just keep practicing. Good luck!! =)

I just wanted to add that I did complete this using the keyboard for turns since I wasn’t used to using the mouse yet. Also I want to thank all the people who gave tips and suggestions here on forums because that was a big help. I’ll be working on using the mouse now for the next puzzle.

Question to Guild Wars 1 players

Rosen Myst.7641

I prefer the original Guild Wars; it will always be my favorite game. I liked the henchmen/hereos; being able to farm elite skills from bosses; creating interesting builds from all the many skills, re-doing the missions in hard mode; vanquishing; completing quests (still haven’t finished every quest); traveling by wurm in the desolation; going for legendary titles; interesting hero characters ….

GW2 is more about dungeons and I don’t care for dungeons. I really grew to dislike them after finding out how upset people can get if you make mistakes. So they’re just stressful for me. I’ve never been keen on killing or being killed by other players either. I realize that those are the best parts for many players; so GW2 is definitely the game for them. Lastly jump puzzles are super fun for some people, but not me because I have problems gauging jumps. And I see that GW2 will be using those a lot in their content. Again GW2 is a great game for some people just not for me.

I do think that 50%-75% of people can do the puzzle. A big key is being able to use the mouse for turns plus having good eye-hand coordination. Also having played other games with jumping and moving platforms has to be a big help.

Rosen Myst.7641

I agree Solvar .. that’s my problem too. I have always used the keyboard for turning and my right hand on the the space bar for jumps. So to try to switch to the mouse for turns and my left hand thumb for jumps is very difficult. I haven’t been able to master it enough to use with a timed puzzle. Using the keyboard I can usually make it to the candy mints, but the presents are all exploding by the time I get there. I have practiced every day, sometimes for an hour or more, hoping I’d get faster. Yet I have not been able to complete it. I’m a lot better than I was at first though. =)

Here are a few tips for the OP:

-try to jump from the higher points to lower points on snowflakes
-on the candy canes jutting out from the pillars, jump at a 45degree angle to maximize landing surface
-on the presents … stick towards the left or right sides…. presents tend to explode less in those areas.
-the snowman by the large candy mint platform blows wind about every 5 sec. …. you can pause or dodge this to avoid being blown off.
-use candy mints next to the snowball trail to avoid getting hit
-watch a video to see how others have done it

Good luck and congratz to all who have completed it!!

“The problem with logic-type problems is that they are easy to spoil. It’s hard to reward a player on these type of activities because it’s assumed that most of the playerbase will just look for the answer somewhere on the internet.

Would you be ok if it had no rewards at all?" Konosh

Yeah … just a simple little candy cane would be great. But I believe people already use the internet to find out how to beat certain bosses. Plenty of youtube videos to help people out and yet they get rewards for those. It’s a special holiday event after all .. not like any of the rewards are that amazing. I’m sure there are tips and videos for the jump puzzles too.

I can’t believe there’s no other type of puzzle Anet could create that could be just as challenging.

“So why do you insist on making it so those of us who enjoy a challenge can’t have even one single thing that caters to our wants?” dreztina

I personally don’t mind if there’s a challenging jump puzzle for all the people who like them. But I’d like to see more variety in the types of puzzles being offered with a focus on different skill sets. Right now both the jump puzzle and the bell choir basically require very good dexterity and eye-hand coordination. On the other hand, some of us are very good at logic type problems: deciphering codes, logic problems, number puzzles, cryptic messages, etc. Those are the sort I find fun. I would be quite happy if people who like jump puzzles get their fun, while others can get something different.

PS … I’m really poor at jump puzzles when they’re timed no matter how “easy” people say they are…. so I still can’t do Winter Wonderland. Bell choir is hard for me too.

I just hope it’s not like the mad king’s clock tower which was basically a speed puzzle. It was fun trying but I was never able to complete it. I have problems judging distances and timing the jumps which slows me down.

I don’t understand why people could object to there being a normal/hard mode as long as you have a title and recognition for completing the highest level of difficulty. That would still set you apart from everyone else. People who are really good at jp can still have their challenge and distinction. People who aren’t as good can still at least experience the puzzle.

Anyone above who only wants a hard mode is basically saying too bad for you if you can’t do it… l2p or jump (in this case.) Great holiday attitude.

Enter Tixx’s airship toy workshop, an instanced map designed for groups of 5 players.

As I was reading the info about Wintersday, I noticed that the workshop is a group event. It made me wonder if it’s going to be like a dungeon of sorts. Just curious about that aspect. I know the devs won’t want to give anything away. I will be interested to see how it all plays out.

I’d like to see a solo player version of the dungeons and here’s why. I’m an older player, my reaction times aren’t as good anymore, I also get nervous when I get to the boss. If I’m in a group I’m forced to move along at a faster pace than I feel comfortable with. In addition, I don’t want others to feel frustrated or see me as a liability on the team. If I could work through a dungeon solo, get confident with the content, then I’d feel better about joining a team.

In Runescape they have a skill called dungeoneering which you can do solo or on a team. With a team you obviously get much better xp and rewards. But that’s fine with me because it still allows me to play the dungeons the way I like best.

If it can’t be done in GW2, it’s okay. I enjoy the rest of the content.

I think you use those as currency on the island or for items to use there. Not sure.

So I would definitely like to see a variety of puzzle activities added to the game along with the jumping puzzles. I’m just not that good on jump puzzles, but I love any type of puzzle that doesn’t require speed and quick reactions.

"Missions" or other linear pve progress

in Suggestions

Posted by: Rosen Myst.7641

Rosen Myst.7641

I think it would be great to take advantage of all the beautiful areas of Tyria by having short side missions/quest chains in different areas that also develop lore or side stories. I remember in GW doing a number of quest chains such as the one for centaurs in Nightfall that I found really interesting. These could be totally optional (in addition to hearts) for those who don’t like “quests.”

Here are some additional points I hope ANET takes into consideration. What motivated me to keep playing in GW? Could any of that be implemented in some form for GW2?

I was thinking about this question the other day. What kept me playing besides pvp or dungeons? I realized that there were so many things that couldn’t be achieved or acquired until later in the game:

  • skills – there were certain skills that were really great to have but couldn’t be purchased until you reached certain areas of the game. In GW2 you get everything right from the start.
  • 2nd Prof – again you couldn’t access a second profession until you reached the crystal desert (for Prophecies) and completed a number of quests in different areas. So another reason to travel to those areas aside from the mission storyline.
  • Elite skills – some of these were just amazing skills but you couldn’t get them unless you could travel to the area the boss was located in and defeat him. Another goal to work towards.
  • Heroes – Heroes came out with the Nightfall expansion and everyone wanted heroes. In order to get them if you were on a different campaign was to complete quests that would open up travel to Elona. Then you had more questing to do to acquire all the available heroes. One of them, Razah, was not available until you completed Nightfall.

*Achievements – I know there are achievements in GW2. Two that I really enjoyed were Guardian and Vanquisher. So basically going back and working in hard mode. I would love to see a hard mode for the personal story or some type of vanquisher title. That would get people playing in empty areas again.

I was unable to complete the puzzle. But I still had fun trying, so I’m not complaining. I could never get past the section right after the disk comes into view. I tried watching videos, changing camera angles, watching others but I just couldn’t get the timing right to make it before the slime got me. I’ve never been very good at things that require quick timing; so I didn’t expect to finish it. I think it’s a good challenge though for all the people that love this kind of puzzle. I also never expect to do all the holiday events. Some I like .. some I don’t. That’s why ANET has to provide a wide variety of holiday content; so everyone can find something they really like doing.

Those of you who have finished the puzzle need to remember that you have great jumping skills and others don’t. (Gratz to Jihoko who can even do it with his inventory showing.) I agree that ANET should mark the clock tower as a challenge puzzle.

Lets talk about that GW2 Article on Gamespy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rosen Myst.7641

Rosen Myst.7641

The person writing this article must never have played Runescape. The botting problems in that game make GW2’s look like nothing. It was the same story there except worse…streams of bots running around in groups farming materials, etc. People were reporting them and the problems kept getting worse. Frustration was at peak levels with posts all over the forums. To their credit Jagex finally got the bot situation under control in Runescape and are continuing to stay on top of it. Botting is big business … companies exist to create, market and update their bot programs. Botting programs are used by many people. As soon as a gaming company puts an anti-bot program into the game, the bot programmers are hard at work on updates to circumvent the games anti-bot program. The worst part is that it’s often difficult to bring any legal action against the bot programming companies. So what is a gaming company to do? The solution is not a simple one. Banning botters only gets rid of them temporarily. They always come back. So there’s no permanent solution.

I agree that ANET needs to stay on top of this issue or it will get much worse. I’m sure they must be working on an anti-bot program. But from what I saw with Runescape, it will take a while to develop an effective program that’s not easy to circumvent. In the meantime ignore the bots and enjoy the game because it could be worse.

Take a look at ranger sub forums and you’ll see the note from Jon Peters about our status.

None of the medium dungeon armors look that cool too me; so I have no motivation to farm dungeons. Similary the legendary skins for bows are less than epic; so no reason to go for that either. WvW is fun as long as you have a good battle going. But I play on the Crystal Desert server; the last few weeks battles have been more one-sided. Finally, I find it somewhat distasteful that ANET seems to be doing everything they can to create money sinks and to push gems even in the holiday events. I realize they are a business trying to make some money, but the way it has been implemented in GW2 makes me less interested in playing.

Rosen Myst.7641

I loved the gw1 mesmer … master of interrupts, enchantment removal, degen, and using the foe’s skills against themselves. It was my favorite class after ranger. The gw2 mesmer is a different breed with its illusions and clones. Even though its very competitive in pvp I don’t care for the class mechanics.

I also loved using heroes because to use them effectively you basically had to master the skills and builds for every class. So that was fun. It was like a puzzle trying to figure out just the right builds for each hero to complete a mission or vanquish an area. For me it involved a lot more thinking about skill interactions than in GW2 where weapon skills are pre-set .. so no real thinking to do there other than which weapons to go with. Many of the utility skills aren’t very useful (at least for rangers); so basically you have only a small number that are worthwhile equipping. I feel very limited in GW2 but maybe that’s because of the class I chose to play.

I couldn’t believe that there was no mention of ranger in the update notes. Every other class received fixes to bugs or other changes. Yet nowhere was ranger mentioned. I was sure I had somehow skipped that part of the notes, but after double-checking I couldn’t believe it…..nothing for rangers. I was at least hoping for a fix to the pets F2 activation delay.

But by far the most concerning issue is the lack of communication from ANET. It gives players the impression that no one is listening, no one understands our concerns, no one cares about the issues. I’m not saying this is true… I’m saying that’s the impression the community is getting.

We just want to hear something, anything… even if it’s just “We’re aware of the issues and are working on some fixes.” “At this time we feel the ranger class has no problems and is competitive with any other class.” “We don’t plan on fixing rangers anytime soon.” Good, bad, otherwise … we just want to get some word from the devs about plans for the ranger.
