I totally forgot, but this thread reminded me – There actually is a series of scenes depicting a fahrar being given lessons about some basics of charr history and culture. I believe it starts outside the Command Core, meanders over to the Stormcaller monument, and then goes up through the three levels to Smodur’s office. It’s been a while since I worked on it, but that was definitely also designed to capture the “tour the city” feel.

As long as there’s something obvious about “This is a series of events that is going to show you lore of this location!”, you sold me on the idea that different races would do things differently. I imagine some old Norn sitting around a camp fire telling stories about Hoelbrak that might be just a little larger than life. Maybe an area called the storytellers circle.

I imagine Asura would have some sort of national archives database, or maybe a school class going on with a teacher lecturing on the history of Rata Sum.

My guess is its something about the nature of the nightmare. The Mystery of Countess Anise

Evans:

That… actually kinda demonstrates my point. Liars often do come up with little details like that to put people in exactly the same sort of thought-spinning that you’re doing now. “That doesn’t make sense… it’s too weird for someone to make up, so it must be true!”

Mind you, it’s possible that Anise was doing something shady at the time – that’s her job, after all. But, to be honest, the vibe I had to Estelle suddenly adding Anise to the story was an on-the-spot addition, and she didn’t have time to consider whether ‘red’ was a realistic colour for the situation. If we’d then come to her with testimony from Logan that Jennah and Logan were discussing Seraph business at the time, I expect it would have suddenly been Jennah in a black cloak, Anise in a red cloak, AND Logan in a purple cloak.

(The kicker, incidentally, is that we’ve seen what Anise and Jennah can do with illusions. If Anise and/or Jennah were really up to something shady, they wouldn’t be caught out by someone recognising them in a back-alley meeting.)

The problem of course here is with this many powerful mages and mesmers around, anybody could just make an illusion of anybody else doing bad things. Civilization would break down in mistrust and factions.

Here’s a crazy idea though – what if it is the city of the gods, where they lead humans from in to Tyria that exists beyond the mists, beyond dreams.

Maybe when Rytlock got sucked in to the mists by Sohothin, the sword which was owned by the royalty of humans and existed from a time when the gods were with the humans, went back to the human homelands, and if we go to the city, Rytlock will be bashing dragon heads there. : P

Rukh.9287

I think his main problem was he’s supposed to be the leader of the Pact, but doesn’t really act like it. He comes along as a peon on each mission, and a weak one at that. You get this disconnect between his position and his capabilities.

It would have been much better if he had stayed back at base (except on the two cleansing missions of course, kind of needed to be there) and the story propped up his image through simple dialogue of the successful missions he’s planned and turned the tide of the war.

To some extent the player suffers under this too. We’re commander of the Pact forces and yet we’re off on all sorts of missions that would really be more suited for people in less of a leadership role. Its sort of the Kirk Effect. Captain, yet goes along on every single dangerous away mission.

Fiction often has this difficulty because you want main characters to be important with prestigious ranks, yet you can’t just have them always out of the spotlight and away from the action. It doesn’t have to be that way for Treehearne though, he can stay back at base where a scholar belongs.

Maybe they should have made Rytlock the leader of the Pact, it would be plausible he goes off to punch things on every misison. : P

This sounds like a horrible terrible very bad no good idea. Also I don’t like it much. The benefit of instances is you can control the content that people get hit with, you can make a scripted path with interesting events and interactions. Making it open-world makes it so you have no idea who is there or how many. Suddenly these assets have to be always loaded in case people show up, whether one person stumbles by, or 100 people decide to go smash the place. No bad.

They should make more instanced events, just they don’t all need to be in caves. Implement “dungeons” out in the middle of towns. You can make a “dungeon” which is an instanced defense of Ebonhawke against insurgents for instance.

All of these of course searchable in the dungeon finder. Mini instances. Difficult but rewarding instances. Moar instances!

I think that sounds like a fine idea to gather feedback about what is important to players. Imput is nice. The fact is discussing with players is nice, but you know that you’re going to have contradicting needs. Pale Tree Vision *Spoilers*

in Lore

Posted by: Rukh.9287

Rukh.9287

Here is my wild, wild theory.

It is based on two quotes, one from GW2 and one from GW1.

In guild wars 1, there is a chain from Eye of the North. Remember that Eye of the North was the last expansion for GW1. If any lore in GW2 is based in GW1 it is likely from Eye of the North.

There is a very peculiar and important Asura studying the Eternal Alchemy. He has you go collect 6 cyphers from 6 facets. One facet for each human god.(Sound familiar? Eternal Alchemy from Omadd’s machine’s vision?)

Once you do, you get a cypher that leads you to a location where you fight the facets as dragons and once you defeat them, you get a mysterious ghostly figure who tells you:

“An offering to those who seek”
“Beyond the mists beyond the dreams”
“On distant shores of a land unwaking”
“Answers there lie in waiting”

Now on to GW2. In GW2, there’s a weird out of place dude named Malyck. We gather he has no recollection of The Dream and is not spawned from the Pale Tree. During one quest, we talk to a seer who is more in touch with the dream than any other living being save perhaps the pale tree and maybe the firstborn.

“A distant shore—and darkness. A root, a cave…you. You are the seed. What Ronan knew and never told still lingers in the Dream.”

Ok, what do we see from both of these? Distant shores. But what distant shores? The GW1 quote says distant shores of a land unwaking. Perhaps from the sylvari’s dream?

We know that The Dream came before the Sylvari. From the GW2 quote, describing a distant shore, a cave, and a seed, mention of Ronan, it sounds like the dream remembers from before the Pale Tree was planted too.

Based on the GW1 quote, here’s my interpretation of the Pale Tree’s vision. We’re actually seeing inside the dream. We see the forest with the sylvan face, perhaps this forest is a gateway, the gateway to a far-off land, “beyond the dreams”.

Mordremoth wants to get to this place. Its sure to be full of magic.

But what is the place?

I really don’t have anything to go on. A wild hunch, it could be where the Mursaat were able to escape to. Maybe they are still alive there. Maybe this land is the source of Tyrian magic, and the first eternal alchemy vision we had really was of Mordremoth reaching the core of the eternal alchemy and not of Zhaitan’s magic returning to Tyria. Maybe the reason in the Sylvari intro, Mordremoth has projected his minion into the dream, and perhaps the source of the corruption is that Mordremoth is trying to breach the dream to get to this place.

One other wild speculation with very little evidence. The Pale Tree was most likely taken by Ronan from a place in the physical world of Tyria. If Ronan was there, and it was a place The Dream remembered, the reference to the far shore and the cave in the GW2 was likely where Ronan found the Pale Tree.

We know that the Mursaat city that Saul D’alesso found was on The Isle of Janthir, it would certainly count as a distant shore. If Ronan was battling the White Mantle, perhaps he visited that shore. Perhaps he took a Mursaat creation, a guardian of their world, the Pale Tree, when he was there.

Neither quote actually links to the Mursaat though, its just we know they were skilled at escaping the world in to their own place, we know that they were behind the White Mantle that Ronan was fighting. And we know that they had a city across Janthir Bay, but nothing has actually given evidence of their involvement at all.

You know, in GW1, when we get the quote, we’ve just collected cyphers from the different aspects of the gods, maybe the city beyond dreams is the hiding place of the gods? Or maybe their original homeland, or the homeland of the humans.

And who is the mysterious phantom? Maybe the avatar of another guardian of the dream?

You know, I totally agree that it looks bad when a company says they’re going to do a thing, and then don’t do it.

You know how you prevent that? You do what you say you’re going to do.

Now I know what you’re thinking “But what if we change our mind??” That’s what planning is for. You need to be spending a lot of time planning so you can have a definitive roadmap. Then you can give a high-level plan, and actually follow through on it.

If you’re constantly changing what you’re doing, you’re expending a ton of effort on half-finished plans then changing course. That’s bad. As the saying goes, a stitch in time saves nine.

It’s not an argument, it’s an advice. If those guys don’t like how gw2 combat system is done, they’re not tied to this game. It’s not like the game has much to offer for pve players besides that fast paced combat style where my guardian supports everyone in full berserker. Complaining about the absence of trinity in a non-trinity game is kind of stupid.

Trinity or non trinity is a single aspect. Has it possibly crossed your mind that there are a whole lot of other aspects that people might like but would rather this one thing be different even though they like all the other things in this game over other games? Or am I utterly wasting my time here.

Tanking is kind of silly. Maybe make dumber mobs stick with bashing the things close to them so people can armor up and protect the others, but mobs shouldn’t be stuck like glue to one guy, it hurts immersion.

Healers make sense though. Specialization is a real thing, and if you had someone specialize in healing magic so others could focus on being good at combat, it would be a real tactic. Like medics in the real world so every soldier doesn’t have to carry around a whole hospital and try to bandage themselves up when they get wounded.

As for what the tree says, She says "You have fought an Elder Dragon face to face. We know for certain what we fought is not an elder dragon. She never states its a minion of Zhaitan. She states she “believes” you are destined to fight Zhaitan based on you having fought an elder dragon in the dream. Again, not a minion of Zhaitan, an elder dragon. What the Pale Tree “lying” as Konig states? I don’t think she was lying. If it is canon, she’s simply wrong. As she says, she doens’t control The Dream, she’s just its caretaker.

What I think is more likely is that they’ve retconned it in to the control of Mordremoth.

Rukh.9287

Yeah, I have to admit, I can’t comprehend the “No it’s not in the game because its not in the game” argument. It seems so obviously flawed. I guess some people are just too basic to waste time with.

The strongest arguments against Mounts are:

  • Outside of the Wurms in Nightfall, there is no history of mounts in the Guild Wars universe.
  • With the current waypoint system and relatively small size of maps, there is no present need for mounts.
  • Mounts w/buffs will likely create even further balance issues.
  • Mounts w/o buffs, meaning cosmetic only, may create lag issues and flood player’s vision with even more than we already have to deal with.

These are all valid reasons against Mounts. Does that mean they will never be implemented? No. However those that want mounts MUST justify them against these reasons. If you can not – then you likely have little hope of getting ArenaNet to add them. I could very well be wrong in that because ArenaNet could just see it as another way to make money. * shrugs *

But if you only wish to downsize or insult the Anti-mount people’s reasoning, I’m afraid you’re not doing yourselves or your side of the debate any good.

You can do better.

You seem to have completely missed my point. Utterly. I didn’t say "All people who don’t want mounts are so and so. I said THIS SPECIFIC ARGUMENT is lame.

There’s plenty of valid arguments. I don’t care too much either way myself, but anybody who says the reason a thing shouldn’t be in the game is because its not in the game just is too simple a toad to cook.

France actually owned the Byzantine crown for a while until it was pretty obvious nobody was getting it back.

Question about Risen after Zhaitan's death

in Lore

Posted by: Rukh.9287

Rukh.9287

I believe game devs confirmed Zhaitan bit the dust.

I see it like this. The magic still exists. Zhaitan was a concentration of the magic and actively guided it, using it to corrupt things, but him being gone doesn’t make the magic gone, in fact it would be dispersed back in to the environment, making other concentrations of it, i.e. Teakettle and other undead stronger. It does however mean there isn’t this powerful force going around actively corrupting things and trying to destroy civilization. So that’s a good thing at least.

It turned living into undead, but we can see they do bad things mostly because Zhaitan want them to do it. Now Zhaitan is gone, shouldn’t they lose their goal?

What I meant is that while Zhaitan gave focus to this energy of undeath, I think the energy of undeath and the desire to corrupt and rot exists without zhaitan. It just doesn’t have the singular strategic purpose anymore. It seems more like the dragons form naturally as a font of the energy, they don’t make the energy themselves.

Question regarding Shadow of the Dragon

in Lore

Posted by: Rukh.9287

Rukh.9287

So you think a dragon that was hiding in the ground as a plant and rose from it, as none of zhaitan’s minions do, who is covered in plants even though the other things in the dream like the Asura you see are not made of plants is actually a Zhaitan minion? Even though it uses plant attacks unlike any of zhaitan’s minion’s attacks, summons plant creatures that are not undead creatures, is a zhaitan minion?

LOOL I wonder how much its going to take for you to admit you were wrong about the shadow of the dragon. Look, you don’t have to be so stubborn. We didn’t have a lot of information at the time. Just say you guessed wrong based on the sparse information.

It’s going to be a lot more work doing mental gymnastics to distort facts to support you than just admitting you came to the wrong conclusion.
