Ranger tPvP Viability after Patch?

my question is why you want a hybrid/condi build to do all the things that GS/LB do much more efficiently, cause roaming/contesting/skirmishing is definitely something those builds can do and if that’s what you mean by ‘team play’ then that’s your best choice.

I’d love to help, but I feel as though I’m confused on exactly what you want OP. =)

However a hp buff would always help, I’m just saying that it ain’t as dismal as you make is sound.

As a S/D thief main for just shy of a year, I couldn’t be more disappointed. The nerf to Feline Grace and the nerf to Vigor boon combined killed S/D power buids. 2sec of vigor from a successful evade with 1sec internal cooldown is absolutely unnoticeable. Feline Grace is in dire need of a buff. If you want to be viable as S/D currently, your forced to run shadow arts so u can sit in stealth and wait for endurance to regen naturally.

As an S/D thief for well over a year and a half, why do you need dodges when you have 5k autos? you just can’t spam the evade button anymore, the change makes you have to be a lot more intelligent about how you engage and were from.

also been running; Deadly arts, Trickery, and Acro just fine. just be careful of condis

“Seriously”, What am I supposed to do with the dog doo they gave me as traits when they spent my points on my lev 60 ranger? It’s unplayable now and it cannot be reset.

leveling w/o traits wasn’t hard before when they had stats on them, it should be even easier now. Also as a ranger you should have an even easier time since your pets can keep aggro and revive you. I’ll admit that would annoy me too but it’s not by any means unplayable.

Nothing in the last year of development makes me believe that even 40$ would be a fair price for an expansion to this game. Ever since the megaserver I’ve been logging on to do my dailies and that’s it, hoping for some kind of change. And here it is, for a price greater than the original game itself. Wow.

Originally the base game cost $60 on release, and it’s $50 making it cheaper than the base game at release.

Also as someone who doesn’t have much of an income, I don’t see how the expac isn’t worth it, as my usual policy with games is to get about an hour of playtime per dollar. And so far i have over 2,000 hours on the base game and the expac is gonna add plenty more, well over 50 hours which IMO makes it pretty worth it.

I agree its no skill pretty much. Probably disagree how unbalanced it is but I feel like its a type of build that is rewarded too much low skill low risk build should be the weakest type of build.

The following builds take no skill/little skill and I will rank in order of how little skill they take:
1, Staff ele – There is a reason all the newbs play this
2, Shoutbow
3, Power necro – 1 spam and passives
4, D/P thief – 2 buttons = kill anything
5, Hammer dps guardian – like a 3 button combo that my granny could do
6, S/D thief – spam, no cd management
7, d/d ele – takes more skill than those above
8, Celestial engi – pretty much just spam
9, Bunker guardian – the original brainless spec
10, longbow ranger – spamming from 1500 range takes no skill

So that means this whole meta takes no skill. And mesmer is fairly brainless. Porting around like a clown abusing bugs and having perma invulnerability = no skill. Although it does take a little skill I give mesmers that. The bad ones suck alot. But its still too storng vs everything in the game except thief.

Okay. First off if every class has op/no skill kitten then why do we need to nerf war/thief

how bout two more:
-delete all NPC’s sept for the ones in lord chamber and make the current door breaker spawn points instead spawn a bomb/bomb kit that the player has to carry to the door.
-make the supply center a capture point that you mus hold to get pick up supply from (you can still get it from dead players though).

Both make the game mode less pve’ish and encourage more actual PvP as well, as streamlining a few of the confusing mechanics for newbs.

Giving the players bombs will just result in something like a full bunker warrior or guardian using the bomb kit and laughing as they destroy your walls with absolutely no counter-play. Just get your whole team and rush the Lord. The enemy team won’t be able to kill a bunker supported by four players before all the walls are taken down and the enemy team is in the lord room.

except two things;
-One, when you pick up kits or other objectives in the game they at minimum prevent you from using only weapon skills and at worst prevent you from using any other skill that you would otherwise be able to use. Now most bunker builds are tanky but also rely on CC, regen, and invulnerability/block skills to be unavailable which they would not have assuming bombs were made to work like other in game objectives and kit
items.
-Second bunkers like all builds have plenty of counter play; boon strip, poison, counter CC and though the counter play is less then reliable it still can work given proper skill and coordination.

Those two points aside I agree with the above part of your post, that my changes would mean the rise of bunker builds as bomb carriers which if you ask me is good and with those will arise counter builds/work arounds that will eventually make a meta around the new game mode. It’s good to have a sort of ‘template’ or ‘meta’ for roles in game-modes like this, as they make them easier to understand to both viewers and players as well as giving a good base for teams of PuG’s to go off of for basic tactics.

-make the supply center a capture point that you mus hold to get pick up supply from (you can still get it from dead players though).

some suggestions:
-delete archers until walls are down, they’re pretty useless until all the walls are down anyway
-remove the timer and score system
-better yet remove npc’s make it like wvw where we have to build mobile siege or some kitten and have one player pilot it while defending him and our base.
-delete trebs/make them into automated turrets. honestly after 6 matches i didn’t even notice them and with only 5 there isn’t much of a reason to use them.

Posted by: Runewolf.8456

Runewolf.8456

I find consistent confusion/poison works wonders, My two mains are Thief and Mesmer and each classes is good at spamming at least one of those condi’s pretty much all the time. Since in Spvp at least lots of D/D ele’s rely off of sustain and regen taking that away (or boon stripping/stealing their might stacks) will cripple on pretty fast.

Why do people NOT run meta?

in PvP

Posted by: Runewolf.8456

Runewolf.8456

For me it’s playstyle, I prefer high damage and mobility/sustain and sometimes meta builds can’t give me that (plus some times playing meta just feels to easy)

Also meta builds are the most optimal builds for the class’s optimal role however that doesn’t necessarily mean your gimping your team by playing something different, granted some classes can possibly do the non-meta role better then you but each class has unique features that it can bring to a fight. GW2’s system is probably one of the most ‘play your way’ systems out there, so why not take advantage of it?

So, no support for SB in trait revamp?

in Thief

Posted by: Runewolf.8456

Runewolf.8456

Just like how some weapons are good for control, physical damage, and condition damage, there are, and should be, weapons made solely for utility. I think the SB is perfect as a utility weapon/tool and purposefully designed that way. Not all weapons are designed for damage and I like that.

what kind of buff/support do you want added to the SB? reduced initiative used for SB skills? increased dmg to SB skills? grants additional effects to specific skills? aren’t all the SB skills already OP in a utility point of view?

What do you want? completely rework all the SB skills for more offensive approach, why don’t you just ask for a more offensive range option? oh wait, we’re getting that already, the rifle.

Longer range, would be hella nice, or maybe if you want full support for it have a set of traits that change around the poison to a water field and make trick shot buff alies? idk some kitten like that, just to open up some options (i love my shortbow as it is regardless though.)

Sleight of Hand Baseline

in Thief

Posted by: Runewolf.8456

Runewolf.8456

I would agree that something akin to the treatment mesmers are getting should be tossed our way, sleight of hand though IMO should not be base line. However something like hidden killer (100% crit chance while stealthed) would be snazy since pretty much every power build for thieves needs it, this would leave some options open. where as SoH i feel would no open up new builds but just make current ones more powerful versus how is is as a GM trait which is a “sacrificial” decision through loosing some raw offensive power you get some CC to balance it out.

Perma-Stealth is Legalized Griefing

in Thief

Posted by: Runewolf.8456

Runewolf.8456

My unbiased opinion:

I main a guard, and stealth always irritated me. Whenever a thief would stealth and run, I’d call cheese. How irritating, right?

Two days ago I made a thief, and I’ve already realized how essential stealth is. Thieves are trading a lot to have the ability to stealth: they are a melee class with low health, low armor, and abysmal condi clear. Whereas rangers and guardians can go invincible for a few seconds to take the pressure off, thieves have stealth (but can die quite easily in stealth). Most of their weapon sets are useless in the current meta, so evades cant make up for it (I’m looking at sw/d).

If they are running from you and are about to die, either: (1) you outnumber them, in which case, who wouldn’t run?; and (2) they can’t kill you in a 1v1, but then why should you be able to kill a thief 100%? Shouldn’t it be 50% in a balanced game? They are a zerker class, after all. Running=draw=balanced.

Add to that: no thieves use speed/traveler runes, which means if they want to keep up their famous mobility in or out of stealth, they need to be spending initiative, dodges, or utility cooldowns. Those all need to be balanced to maintain mobility but also be ready for a fight.

So coming from an entirely different class and just playing thief for 2 days, I have to say: stop complaining about stealth. It’s not cheese.

No sarcasm, or witty remarks, from me.

Finally someone who actually took the time to play the class they think is op/cheese/super annoying and see if it really is that easy/op. you sir get an internet cookie.

if you want a solid evade build though it won’t be with P/P so if you want my advice, make your pick, keep pistol as you main kit an have fun with 0 mobility. or use it as a secondary kit with S/D or something and at least be able to be somewhat mobile.

Can I wear Ranger armor on my thief? Can I wear thief armor on my ranger?

If the answer is no. Then I say NO to your suggestion.

Whyever not? We have race-specific armor, and I think that’s wonderful. I wish we had more of it. Class-specific armor would just be another way to make sure your character doesn’t look like every other character out there, especially now that the wardrobe lets classes use each others’ starter gear. (Granted, the wraith mask looks AWESOME on my Mesmer….)

At some point, a little class/race exclusivity adds flavor and makes things unique.

I hate how cultural armor is race exclusive personally, takes away so many options that look really cool especially for medium armors we need more choices, not less. I remember it in WoW too and I also hated it there, I love my pally to death but really like warrior armor yet i really hated warrior’s skill set. It might not be enough to make people quit but it’s enough to get people frustrated.

However sine where one the WoW topic they had racial mounts, if you wanted a races mount you had to rep grind for that race would be really swagger if they did that for cultural armor…

Especially considering that we only have one (possible) lone example of a Sylvari that was born free of outside influences (the Dream/Nightmare) in the form of Malyck, and he seems to be about an average guy.

Bred in the sense of how they are raised, dreamers are raised to be goodie-two-shoes who are all for justice and goodness whereas those of nightmare are corrupted and essentially re-educated into being a super “evil” and jerky you know kill everything(painfully), eating babies, the whole nine yards

However like I said that is only a generalization there will be cases like malyck, the play characters, or like the one nightmare coutier from the white stag storyline who break from that generalization

With elementalist, at least how I imagine them and partially how they’re portrayed with the conjures, I see them being able to use any weapon and apply magic to it. Of course, if they had a weapon range like say, warrior, that’d be kinda ridiculous with the twenty skills they already have.

Regardless, I still think at least eles should get sword and a damage bump on dagger. I mean, dagger is a melee weapon after all. Shouldn’t it not do as much damage, if not less so than ranged damage in the game? Give ele some kitten good melee weapons and I’d be a pig in kitten.

Dagger needs some mobility/internal survivability, damage is fine tbh. on the PvE end I find I’m often dying cause I have no way outside of evades to mitigate damage, unlike other damage dealers like thief, necro, or mesmer(ignoring utility skills) and in PvP/wvw you can’t disengage like every other damage class without blowing major cd’s and on top of that you have to waste all your potential damage traits on survivability ones cause your internal survivability is trash( a combination of lack of skills and high cd’s)

"They're with the dragon now." So what?

in Lore

Posted by: Runewolf.8456

Runewolf.8456

It’s obvious (since players can still be sylvari) that only the weak willed/insert other thing here, will turn to the dragon’s corruption. Also the Mordrem attacked the grove, pretty viciously yet the nightmare court was left alone this implicates that the pale tree to some extent knew that it was spawning the minions of a dragon and tried to raise it’s offspring in such a way that they wouldn’t fall to the dragon when the call came.

Long story short, dreamers are bred to resist the dragon’s corruption hence the very “for justice, goodness, and peace!” attitude a lot of them tend to have in some extent or another. Where as the nightmare courtiers are pretty much bred to be dragon’s minions hence the extremely violent and sadistic tendencies along with the slight obsession with pain, corruption, suffering, ect.

Of course there will be exceptions for either side but in terms of who to burn at the stake/preform acts of mass genocide on, the nightmare court is a pretty kitten good place to start. And when you don’t know who to trust, a dreamer is (probably an adventurer, hero, or soldier) probably your safest bet.

Or you know we could all just ignore this and break out into a civil war while being devoured/corrupted by a giant tentacle-plant-dragon-thing.
