Celestial & Ferocity = nerf?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I’m inclined to say that a person in full Celestial will probably see no change or a slight loss in their overall damage, and a person mixing Zerks with Celestial will see a solid nerf. Because of the first point, I’m somewhat inclined to say that 6% may be too small of a boost, but it does include a (very) modest survivability boost.

I can’t remember; is there anything in the blog post that says whether or not the trait-based crit damage will be changed to ferocity or whether it’ll stay?

New traits from 30-80? Why not 10-60?

I only see one downside to this change. Some professions, such as mesmers, rely heavily on traits just to, “not suck”. Moving them 20 levels up will make the already painful task of leveling a mesmer nearly unbearable.

On the other hand, I do agree with consolidating the trait points from 70 to 14. That just makes a lot more sense.

Maybe Mesmers will get something nice to help shift their dependency away from traits and put that power into their levelling. Not getting my hopes up, though.

There really should be a few more personality categories but I completely agree these should affect our dialogue options in conversations and should affect our emotes and idle animation as well. I dont feel that being sympathetic to Scarlet would be covered in any of the current personalities and really the joking seems out of place for all the current personalities too.

The personality should be decided upon character creation, I mean we currently have a choice that gives a small boost to one of the three but our character should be whatever personality we want from the start.

It’s really really easy to move your character from one personality to another; talk to the speed buff NPCs in DR and you can pick a direction to push in.

IMO, sympathetic would probably be Diplomatic or Noble, and joking would probably be Scoundrel or Unpredictable.

Edge cases would be weird too, what would happen in a LS dungeon? Take the aggregate of everyone’s relationship rating? Just be neutral even though everyone might have a 0% or 100% rating? Call out individual players? (Imagine that: “Hey! It’s my favorite person! I’m so glad to… whoa, you’re hanging out with that guy? Really? I hope he dies. I thought you had better standards.” )

At the moment all instances are, I think, derived out of the instance owner as the “main character” and every other party member is more or less just sticking around. Going for multiplayer stuff would be pretty complicated and maybe a bit too ambitious, yeah, so stick with singleplayer stuff and just have instances run off the main party member.

How many people actually go into these living story dungeons as a group? At the moment, personal story completely disregards any players you might have in your party when it comes to dialogue; LS may as well be the same.

Maybe NPCs could have “personality triangle” stats for expected player personality so they notice when you’re acting out of character or have had a major personality shift between chapters? How much dialog should be written for that? (Imagine: Anakin Skywalker shows up for the Marionette battle, and a month later, Darth Vader arrives to stomp Scarlet with force choke or whatever. Would the NPCs notice? Would anyone ask “Wow, what happened to you? That Miasma sure is some bad stuff.” “I talked to a speed boost NPC … a few times. darth vader breathing sound )

Doesn’t really need that much. When an option is available, have a slight deviation for friends, if the dialogue wouldn’t otherwise make sense.

I’m personally not really expecting an utterly titanic web of interweaving conversation and relationship levels, but a few options. A conversation will probably never cover the entire web of options, but instead have 3-4 options out of the web.

Having a lot of extra dialog would also need more voice acting. I know they don’t really need it, but it always strikes me as odd when NPCs give you a few “silent” paragraphs of text (during which you, and all related NPCs usually stand around motionless, while other players, if present, jump around like baboons yelling “y u stnding arnd??? lts gooooo!!! kick pls!”), then the NPCs suddenly spring to life to deliver some opening line and get on with the show. Needless to say, recording audio for everything would be quite a task, especially considering it would all need to be localized, and can’t forget it also needs to be downloaded and put in the .dat file forever.

I really, really hate voice acting because of how much more expensive it’s become to make dialogue. That said, cutting down on voice acting isn’t too rough; it can be used to cover several dialogue options at once. With Marjory’s question in the current release, for example, she says the same thing no matter which option you pick.

If you ask me, we’re pretty lucky we get what we get, at the cadence we’re seeing updates.

Luck implies that it’s out of our hands and out of ANet’s hands, which is very much not the case. If we want more stuff and better stuff it’s our responsibility to let them know what we want and why we want it.

You already had a good reason to go 30 Death as MM; 20/0/30/20/0 was already more popular than 20/0/20/30/0.

On topic, I have two big thoughts;

1. I hope that we get healing affecting our healthpool while in Death Shroud instead of doing nothing.
2. If the Death Line revamp looks nice post-patch, it might be interesting to take something like a 20/0/30/0/20 spread for strong LF generation, blast boosters and Vital Persistence.

I do hope that there will be something about this said in the “facilitating friendly play” option. Some things like taking down the High Wizard isn’t something you can do whenever you feel like it, and some kind of option to slam together a group, instantly guest to a server and start the Gates of Arah train would be super duper cool.

So if we are on a character that has completed all their personal story the trait associated with that guide has to be bought?

Completely wild presumption; NPCs associated with that story mission will go “oh hey commander how are you” and then you’ll go “hey man can I please have that trait book? i don’t have it” and they’ll go “this won’t end well.”

Alternatively, characters which already exist will have all of the traits they have access to unlocked. Except for the new ones of course but it’s doubtful that they’ll require you to do personal story missions just for the sake of avoiding this problem.

I don’t see a big impact with this change. Every WvW player already has applied fortitude and guard leech applied strength on all their characters, thanks to account bound WXP.

[Suggestion] Dialogue Options/Personality

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Sarrs.4831

Other characters’ personalities
At the moment, we’re kinda sorta forced into being the Biconics’ friends. I don’t like that because I am a mean person by nature. I want to have the option to make them not like me. This is an RPG, and an RPG isn’t complete unless you’re able to act like a big jerk- But how do I make them not like me?

I have a few rough thoughts on this, but my main one so far is that key NPCs have two things:
1. A simple relationship bar with the player character; a scale from 0 to 100. If your relationship with a character is 0, they really, really dislike you; they might fear you, they might hate you, etc etc. If your relationship with a character is 100, you two are best bros and they will totally buy you drinks when you go to the pub.
2. Characters have action classes which they like and dislike. A character likes and dislikes certain actions, and linked actions, and performing actions which a character approves or disapproves on moves that relationship bar up or down. Let’s say that any direct action they like or dislike moves the relationship by 4, and any action linked to a like or dislike moves the relationship by 2.

With that in mind, let’s look at a character like Kasmeer. Kasmeer likes Charming, Diplomatic and Noble actions, and dislikes Barbaric, Brute and Militant actions. This makes Diplomatic actions her absolute favorite, and if you do one of those, you’ll get +4 from the direct action and another +4 from the two actions linked to it which she likes; so if you’re a diplomatic character who uses diplomatic options a lot, you two will get along like a house on fire. If you do a Barbaric option, on the other hand, she won’t be very fond of you at all; your relationship will go down by 8.

With that in mind, what should actually change as a result of being friends or not-so-friends with someone? This depends on the character in question, but as a character likes or dislikes you more, they might be more or less reluctant to talk to you, they might be more antagonistic or affectionate towards you, or certain actions might be more or less likely to gain positive results.

If, for example, Evon Gnashblade has a 60 or less score to to you, he’ll be more or less how he is right now; not very appreciative of you knocking off Scarlet. If he has a 20 or less score, he might refuse to talk to you altogether, saying something like “buy something or go away”. If, on the other hand, he’s really keen on you (say, 75+), you get additional dialogue options- You might be able to ask him whether he plans on moving back into Lion’s Arch and setting up the BLTC there again, or whether he plans on moving elsewhere. If you’re good friends with Ellen Kiel, you might be able to go talk to her and try to convince her to discharge Evon from the Lionguard. We had the voting system back in the day, and people were really keen on those choices; maybe this’d be a good opportunity to slide in little choices here and there.

I wrote up a huge spiel and I don’t know how to stop, send help
That’s more or less everything I had in mind and I think that these are really big problem areas in the Living Story. Being able to have your character actually express themselves would make your character feel a lot more of a part of the story, and immersion can make or break an RPG.

So yeah. In short, personality unlocks more conversation options, and unlocked options affect NPCs’ opinions of you and open up more dialogue options. Thoughts?

[Suggestion] Dialogue Options/Personality

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I’ve been fishing through the forums and I think I’ve found a sentiment that a lot of people are feeling; that the Living Story, at the moment, doesn’t really offer the player very much room to roleplay, to flesh out their own character’s personality or to have much influence on their relationship with the other characters in the story, like the biconics. Personally, I find that these are really big problems when my character can’t quite act how I think they’d act- or they can’t act at all. I don’t know how good I’ll be at making an actual suggestion, but I think I might be able to proffer a few ideas which will maybe help with the lack of dialogue options.

The player character’s personality
So we already have a system for this in-game, which is the Charisma/Dignity/Ferocity triangle which you can see on your character chart. At the moment, it doesn’t really do a hell of a lot; there’s the occasional Personal Story element that can be expedited by using an appropriate personality conversation option, and there are a few dynamic events that interact with it, but these are really very few and far between, and the system at the moment is really not very relevant to the game as a whole. It’s, for better or worse, a tiny bit of fluff which doesn’t actually do much, and it has absolutely no bearing on the Living Story at the moment.

During the current Living Story release, we have a dialogue option which has come under quite a bit of flak recently; the discussion with Marjory about your character’s thoughts on landing the final blow on Scarlet. There aren’t enough options for what every character might want to say or do. There’s no option to show remorse for having to kill someone who wasn’t acting under their own power, and there’s no option to chastise your ‘friends’ for showing such a sentiment. But, there’s only so much space for dialogue.

So, where I’m going with this; we have a system that’s not really doing anything and we have a problem in the Living Story. Why not stick the two together; allow a lot more dialogue options, but with some order or slight modification behind them which depends on the character’s personality?

Onto actual implementation; I drew up this quick triangle of personalities in GW2 and a set of lines to join them up; nevermind the jagged edges, I did this in MSpaint. My very rough idea for this would be to allow a player to pick an option from their own personality, and any personalities which are connected with a line. For example, a Charming character would be able to pick any Charming, Captivating, Scoundrel, Unpredictable and Diplomatic options which appear, and by picking an option, they’ll move along the line towards that personality; that Charming character will get Ferocity points from picking Scoundrel options, or they’ll lose Charisma by picking Unpredictable options, or they’ll gain more Charisma by picking Captivating options. This opens up a potentially huge number of dialogue options which could possibly all be covered by text, which is fairly cheap to do.

This isn’t really very useful on its own, we need actual relationships with the other characters, so continuing in next post

Depends on which army. Generally speaking, none of them are sympathetic; we’ve got 2 factions of religious zealots, communist zealots, robots, psychopathic and probably dragon-addled rebels, and pirates. Those guys all made their own bed. If they showed any sign of repentance or any indication that they were acting outside of their own control, I’d be more sympathetic.

I typically let posts like these slide, but in this case I need to write something.

I’m sure that when RL tyrants, mass murders, violent anarchists, and vicious sadists are finally given their ‘just reward’, many of the victims of these individuals celebrate the tormentors demise in ways that are far less sedate than a (very) few jokes told in a bar.
don’t believe me? Do a quick history search.

In fact, it would have been out of place if the ‘scooby squad’ didn’t blow off some steam with a few comments concerning Scarlet’s demise.

I for one do not pity the character of Scarlet. She knew that her plans would involve the deaths of many, many Tyrians. It does not matter that she may have been driven to it. In the end she sought out death, and that is what she got.
See you in Torment, Scarlet.

Definitely there’s a real life precedent to this. The most recent and relevant example which I can think of was the raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound and American celebrations about that, so it definitely makes sense for characters in-game to be celebrating her death. It would still be nice to be able to express disapproval of this in-game, and I think that’s one of the flaws of the Living Story that your character doesn’t really have any expressive quality about them in it. Hopefully we’ll see it in the next LS, but probably not.

We’ve reached the end. Judgement can now be passed.

LS writing was horrific. The only thing found in abundance was not wonder and excitement, it was the rotten characters and second grade dialog.

Stop the living story experiment and build an expansion with permanent content.

I agree with your summation of the living story but I don’t agree with your plan going forward.

Living Story can work. We’ve seen it work in some places, most notably Bazaar of the Four Winds.

Even if they did dump the LS and make an expansion, it would still be plagued with the same problems that the Living Story has. Their inability to write is not magically solved by changing their pipeline; it might have an effect, but it won’t be that big.

It might sound boring because it’s not really that big of a change, but the best solution is to Stop Being Bad. The problems with the story are not inherent to the format but just the fault of bad writing.

So how do we all rate the end of LS season 1

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

My overall thoughts on BfLA;

meh/10.
The story of BfLA was good, but only if you ignore the underlying structural problems which built up to this climax, like ‘how did Scarlet build a UFO without anyone noticing?’. It’s more or less a foolproof ending in that it finishes up LS1’s story arc and sets the stage for LS2, so in that regard, it did more or less the best that it could have possibly done. There are still a few holes, like how we can breathe without dying horribly in this miasma-soaked ruined city.

The actual content/fights… Hoo boy. I’ll say that generally speaking, the Prime Hologram fight itself was pretty good. It’s fun, has mechanics, and has really cool music. However, the rest of the patch is not quite so good. There’re the bugs, the watchknights being immune to conditions half the time, incomplete design (apparently we were supposed to split up to kill the watchknights), a few more bugs, champions which you don’t really have the time to kill (which also have bugs)…

So yeah. I’ve more or less stopped playing this LS content because, while it’s supposed to be PUG content, the average PUG can’t really get past the watchknights. Why it couldn’t be left as it was, I don’t understand.

I take it you’ve never played a Sylvari, or did you forget about the gay relationship in your Personal Story when you choose the Knight story?

There are gay dudes in the Knight storyline?

There’s a big big difference between content which 1/15th of players see and content which 100% of players see. There’s a big difference between content at the start of the story and content at the climax of the story.

Celestial & Ferocity = nerf?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I don’t see how anyone can object to a one time change in stats, they have done it before.

Because you still have a piece with the same spread of stats, just a reduction in one of them; identical to Berserker’s, Assassin’s and Valkyrie’s in this respect, but none of them are getting a respread.

Bad in math? If celestials gets the same ferocity as zerkers or sin armor pieces (as it is currently) I would totally be fine with it not needing a reset. Anyone can see that bring it down to the same numerical value as other stats on celestial set is a huge and unnecessary nerf.

Except that Celestial doesn’t get the same critical strike damage as Zerker or Assassin armor pieces. It varies between getting less, getting the same amount, and getting more. I’m wondering whether you can see the problem or not with Celestial getting more than the premiere crit damage stat spreads.

Yeah, it is a nerf; however, receiving a nerf does not necessitate receiving a stat spread change. Remember, the only reason that they gave you a stat spread change with Magic Find is because Magic Find no longer exists as a stat on gear.

Ever thought of maybe someone use it for a profession that’s not an elementalist? Someone perhaps choose celestials because the high crit dam, and uses it to mix with other set to maximize the stats? Changing the crit dam changes the usefulness of the gear. One again, we are not asking for celetrials to be un-nerfed. Just want to be able to reselect the stats so that our hard work is not wasted due to no fault of our own.

Thank goodness, easy questions. Yes, I have thought of uses outside of elementalists. And yes, someone probably chose celestial because it has high crit damage. And yes, changing the crit damage changes how good the gear is.

You kinda sorta do ask for Celestial to be un-nerfed in your first response, when you say

If celestials gets the same ferocity as zerkers or sin armor pieces (as it is currently) I would totally be fine with it not needing a reset.

However…
These arguments apply equally to the other crit damage spreads.
Classes other than Elementalist can use Berserker’s, Assassin’s and Valkyrie’s. You can mix Berserker’s, Assassin’s and (particularly) Valkyrie’s with other stat spreads for the high crit damage. Changing crit damage changes the value of Berserker’s, Assassin’s and Valkyrie’s.

Well let’s get what we know we have out of the way.

Balance changes
Sigil/Rune revamp
PvP reward restructuring (RIP Glory)

What I’d like to see;

New class:weapon combinations
Some more trait fiddling, possibly new traits
Build templates

However, high hopes, low expectations.

I don’t see how anyone can object to a one time change in stats, they have done it before.

Because you still have a piece with the same spread of stats, just a reduction in one of them; identical to Berserker’s, Assassin’s and Valkyrie’s in this respect, but none of them are getting a respread.

Obviously the latter is a much more organized and convenient strategy for expressing ideas.

Except you lump it with things like shaving 8 damage off infiltrator’s strike.

So it seems to me that Taimi is more or less a pointless character, or at least, an unusable main character, just because they’re not allowed to put her in the line of fire.

I mean, come on. It’s a game in which the primary mechanic is punching dudes in the face, and there’s a character who’s not allowed to be around if there’s a risk of her getting punched in the face. This is… Let’s put it gently and say “not a very good idea”. Why is Taimi here? Put her somewhere in the background until she grows up and put a new Asura on the team.

Such a cliche storyline. Its as if anet just took the speculation and say “hey, why not?”
Was really hoping for something surprising.

I think that was kind of the point. If they tried to do a plot twist, that would only leave a lot more questions. The ending was low-risk and idiot-proof, which is a decision I agree with- We’ve been strung out on kitten -pulls for a while now, and having a conclusive end to Scarlet’s arc was the right decision.

-

My general thoughts on the patch- It’s the best that they possibly could have done (minus the Knights screwing over conditions). It doesn’t solve the ridiculous problems already in the plot (like how Scarlet managed to build a UFO without anybody noticing), but it does a good job of both wrapping up Scarlet’s arc and furthering the overall plot.

An encounter that makes players think about their approach is in no way a bad thing and very much a welcome addition to the game. We dont want to end up with a reskinned Shatterer fight every two weeks.

This is less an encounter that makes me rethink my approach and more an encounter that makes me go do something else. I have better things to do than pick babies up off the floor while I wait 3-4 minutes for my turn to do anything at all to the boss.

Quite a nice idea, but it would require a lot of memory to save all that information :P And it would be rather unfair towards supports, since they don’t really kill as much

Not really; just make it a hidden achievement. The game tracks how many times you’ve done Agent of Entropy; just do that.

It’s late here so I don’t really feel like doing the numbers, but I wonder how much damage would be regained by changing the 5/8 ratio to 6/8. It’s been said in the thread that the lack of Power on Celestial gear is a big component of its low damage, so the boosts to Power, Precision and Condi Damage could make up for the loss.

If they are account bound then I don’t think they can go on the trading post, but a super rare RNG item from a limited time event that only forms part of a set you may not even be able to use being account bound? That wouldn’t make sense.

They’re fairly easy to get with guild commendations.
