Zerker rifle engineer can keep almost a constant 17-25 stacks of might on himself and hit very hard with rifle, surprise shot, static discharge, very often.

[Guide] Overpowered PvP Phantasm Build

Shinoobi.1259

I’ve played this build for a while, and a good tanky/ condition engineer who is smart enough to kill the phantasms with bombs then stack conditions on me is the hardest thing I’ve fought. I won 3-0, but it was always down to the last few thousand HP.

Things that were a complete stomp were d/p thieves who perma blind me and put up too much pressure for me to properly get out phantasms before it’s too late. Blind = ruined.

Any plans for account wide WXP?

Your WXP shows your expertise with that particular class. You’re a very good ranger in WvW. You know how to position, what spec works best for you, and what you can contribute to your map.

Why should you get those things on your thief? Why should you appear to be more experienced than a player who only plays that profession?

Nah, I’m cool with the current system, even though I have a lot of characters.

I’d watch a GW2 TDM PvP stream. Watching how pro players deal with certain classes and builds as a group would be very interesting to me. Who they chose to target first, who they chose to ignore, what skills they bring, if they utilize combo fields and such would be very appealing.

I’ve played so many hundreds of conquest games that I really don’t feel like watching players better than me do it. I barely want to play it myself. There’s a reason duel servers usually have more players than normal conquest matches.

Confusion Mesmer?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Shinoobi.1259

Shinoobi.1259

You can hit Tazza (Sorrow’s Embrace P1 final boss) with some significant confusion damage on one of the attacks. I can’t recall if it’s the laser or the AoE mind stab. Also has anyone tried confusion on Ginva the Butcher’s whirling attack (HoTW P1 final boss)?

There are certainly splashes here and there for some nice confusion spikes but on the whole whatever we can come up with probably doesn’t even equal 10% of the PvE opponents one would face.

From my experience farming up mobs in WvW for corruption stacks, your confusion only procs once at the beginning of an enemy channel. So if this whirlwind move is one move on a long channel, then it’ll only proc once.

I gender swapped my elementalist from norn female to norn male, because I couldn’t stand that almost all of the armor options were really kitteny. Light armor doesn’t mean almost no armor or dresses that show a little muff with sleeveless and stomachless shirts. I thought the armors themselves weren’t “ugly” or “unfashionable”, but I would like the choice not to dress like that if I can, but the overwhelming majority of light armors at level 80 are very, very revealing.

I guess people are drawn to naked females with giant dragon wings and glowing swords. My opinion on this whole subject may be different if I got to see some male characters in the same array of clothing.

So now six of my seven character slots are male with the exception being an Asuran female who looks pretty dashing in her medium armor(which actually looks like armor).

Mesmer or Elementalist?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shinoobi.1259

Shinoobi.1259

If you “have” to play as a Norn Male, then I’d go with elementalist. I’ve thousand of hours on my elementalist, and I’ve had great success in all forms of PvP with it. I personally enjoyed playing full healing power in WvW. With around 1900 healing power, and specced for condition clearing, you can be a huge impact in ZvZ, even if it’s just laying down your CC and switching to water to spam auto attacks on your melee train(aoe healing is very strong every 3/4ths second) and your frostbow auto attacks heal for soooo much. It’s very strong for healing ram users under heavy AC fire. I made a D/D build to run in the melee train with to provide auras, boons, heals, and condition removal. I ran sigil of restoration with sigil of renewal with omnomberry compote food. You run a mix of VTC gear with THPC. With sigil of life stacks, you should have around 1000 condition damage, 1100 healing, and that will give you around 1900 hp everytime you tag and enemy and it dies, and around 500 hp everytime you swap attunments(9sec icd) and 3000 hp when you swap to water(stacks with cleansive wave). It was a lot of fun, and it’s a build I do not think would transfer well to the mesmer class. I’m not sure if there is a viable mesmer build that is capable of running with melee train in t1 blob fights(maybe some weird perma dodge clone shatter build).

I recently (passed month) started playing mesmer heavily, and I fell in love with it. As an asuran mesmer, I have very little problems tagging or with AoE in WvW. With new Torment Sigil on Staff, rabid gear, radiation field(asura racial), and chaos storm, I find that I can reliably run viel + blink with radiation field and get dozens of tags in zerg vs zerg. I run sceptor(sigil of doom)/ torch(sigil of earth) as a secondary weapon set, and it’s great for cleaning up small skirmishes/ left overs. I probably wouldn’t like mesmer as much without the asuran racials(technobobble is OP for roaming/ perplexity, pain inverter is very nice with boon duration, radiation field lasts 15 seconds… very strong).

That’s my brief and not very in depth opinions on mesmer in WvW at least. sPvP, they have several viable builds while Eles really only have one decent one(fresh air is pretty dookie in comparison to what other classes can accomplish going glass, like the mesmer).

Both the mesmer and the elementalist are kind of masters are utility, but excel at no one thing in particular. However, if you’re concerned more with sPvP and small group roaming in WvW, I’d go with mesmer. If you’re concerned more with big group WvW dynamics, then having one more staff ele is more useful than having one more mesmer, sadly.

I can’t comment on PvE. I avoid living stories, fractals, world events, champ farming, and dungeons like the plague.

Sometimes the best thing you can do to support your teammates in tPvP is to offer more damage, more pressure, and more interrupts, saves. A mesmer can do all of these things. You don’t need to try and accomplish all these objectives to be effective(that’s why you have 4 other team mates).

I’ve had success recently building tanky/ condition. Staff + Sceptor/ Torch. I use phantasmal disenchanter, illusion of life, and dazing mantra, but usually blink(or whatever defensive cooldown I think is best) and go mid point. My job is to interrupt heals while putting out decent AoE pressure in the form of confusion/ weakness/ poison, but mainly my job is to assist the real damage dealers by interrupting the heals of our focus target. Illusion of life is pretty amazing for mid point fights. 15 seconds is a really long time.

Shinoobi.1259

I’m on Blackgate, and I tried running a phantasmal build for a few weeks there. I even went as far as to use the +50% hp signet and the +20% hp trait just so my iBerzerker could get one attack off on the back line before I shattered it. More often than not, I’d say 80% of the time, with the fights there, it would still die before attacking.

I wouldn’t be opposed to 1.5 seconds of damage immunity. It wouldn’t make them any stronger than they are in spvp, pve, 1v1, but it would help with the massive amount of AoE in WvW. In these other formats(not so much pve), you have to dodge the first attack from iBerzerker and then kill it. That’s how you beat a phantasmal mesmer. So the 1.5 seconds of damage immunity to ensure it gets off at least one attack would be a quality of life change and nothing more in my opinion. Their cooldowns are pretty unforgiving, and given how you need to spec and gear to make phantasms truly optimal, that 16 seconds the first time it dies, blowing your defensive cooldowns, and then the next 16 second cooldown where it dies before attacking once again, is pretty unforgiving.

Do people not run glamour sceptor/ torch or focus + staff anymore? You can either trait for focus to reflect, or you can trait for sceptor to give you 200 extra condition damage. With full stacks, guard leech, and good gear, you can drop your glamour fields with up to 2400 condition damage, then switch to staff and kite/ chaos storm and such. The confusion ticks are still very high despite the confusion changes.

I’m currently running a stereotypical valk/zerker phantasm build for roaming, and it works nicely with WvW gear scaling. I’ll occasionally follow around our commander with it, too. The impact you can have with it isn’t very appealing, but other classes have it worse.

Are Rangers viable for WvW/PvP?

in Ranger

Shinoobi.1259

My topic was WvW. I am a very experienced tPvPer and sPvPer, and I know all the “tools” a ranger is capable of executing. They offer a lot for small groups, because unfortunately, much of their “tools” are tagged with an HP bar. What I said is my opinion on how to be useful in zerg fights(I’m talking t1 skill lag zerg balls). If you’re on a smaller server, you’ll likely have more success with the common tanky/condi/ trap build.

In sPvP or tPvP, I’ll again say that you should bring what your party needs. If that is far point, point defense, or wrestling around in middle, you’ll need to readjust your build for each thing. There are much better resources for sPvP and tPvP building than… this place.

“A lot of time to master target attack with pet and retreat,” I’m pretty sure that is one click and two keybinds.

Again, your grammar skills are inadequate, please learn that it’s ’you’re’ and not ‘your.’ Also, you don’t know anything about me; so you have a weak emphasis on your argument about you having played “At a more competitive level” than me. And common ranger?! I never said you were a common ranger! I don’t even know anything about you other than that you have poor grammar skills! And I am right, YOU are a follower, and you BAD MOUTH rangers. Also, as far as I can tell, you’re probably just another warrior or guardian that goes into youtube and server forums loking for a viable build to sustain your satisfaction. Please, shoot me. :/

Please stop derailing the thread with grammar accusations when your display of grammar in the quoted post is peppered with mistakes(run-on sentences, double punctuation, random capital letters, misspelling words…).

Rangers suffer in larger scale fights. This problem can be remedied by not joining the zerg in the first place. There is a lot of use in small roaming parties capping camps before the timer expires. Small skirmishes are where rangers shine. Use this to your advantage. If that playstyle is not for you, then I would suggest always keeping your pet on passive and use either support utility pets such as the fern or DPS pets such as the drake. Using your pet’s F2 ability will cause them to enter combat, but if you keybind the “go back” command, you’ll be in a good spot just dragging the pet back to you after the pet tries to run into sixty AoE circles. I personally enjoy enjoy using Barrage and Lightning Breath for nice AoE damage if I am to run with a zerg. Otherwise, use what your small skirmishing party needs, and do not try to make your square build peg fit into a circular party hole.

As far as group utility is concerned, your utility is your damage. The best you’ll offer, truly, is muddy terrain.

My thoughts on ranger after many others MMOs

in Ranger

Posted by: Shinoobi.1259

Shinoobi.1259

I enjoy the ranger playstyle here, but in attempt to make them unique from other MMOs, I feel they are missing a couple vital things which can improved their gameplay heavily.

First off, my problem with pets is not the AI, but it’s the inability to use second major ability(usually the one with CC) on demand. If my pet has a CC ability, I want to be able to use it at my bidding, and not have the AI just sling it out when it is off cooldown. I do not think adding one more button to the pet’s action bar will be overwhelming for many players. This is my biggest complaint with how the ranger class is worked. I want to use the spider’s web when I need it most instead of having no idea when it’ll be off cooldown besides having a rough estimate in my head.

My second problem with pets is they are a far higher percent of our total damage than I am comfortable with(these are my opinions), and I would like an option to completely disregard the pet for a bonus to my character(20% to power maybe?((I also understand a ranger is a companion based class))). It could work as you cannot stow a pet away for a bonus if it entered combat.

I don’t understand why the trap traits are in the precision and critical damage line. They should be in the toughness and condition damage line.

My last complaint is simply I do not see why Rangers do not have rifles.

Tried to keep this brief.

Choosing a profession for sPvP

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Shinoobi.1259

Shinoobi.1259

I current have three level 80s, and I have been playing since launch. They are Necro, Ele, and Engineer.

I enjoyed playing elementalist the most, because I liked the high mobility. Also getting around 2k healing power and using a staff in WvW is very fun. With Earth 2 and Arcane Wave you can always garuntee your water fields will recieve the blast finisher it needs to heal people. However, staff is no longer viable in sPvP at all. The cast times are way too high, even on the auto attacks. Elementalist just bring so much to the table in my opinion. Elementalists was the most fun to me in every venue of the game.

Necromancer was probably the most fun in WvW, but the least fun of the three in tPvP, sPvP for me. I enjoyed hitting epidemic on a group of people attacking a tower and watch my screen fill up with numbers(even go as far as using BiP → Corrupt Boon → Epidemic when seiging).

Engineers, especially with grenades, are very powerful in WvW and in sPvP. In tPvP, they are pretty niche, so that’s probably why many teams don’t run them anymore. S/D rogues spamming lac made a lot of professions and builds not viable in high level play.

I would make all three and just go straight into HotM and play around with builds on each profession. Delete one, try another, play a few games, and see which one fits your playstyle better. I don’t know you or what you enjoy doing, so I can’t personally recommend one for you.

Choosing a profession for sPvP

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Shinoobi.1259

Shinoobi.1259

Ele- It depends on what -you- want to accomplish in solo, hotjoin, and what your -team- needs for their composition regarding which type of elementalist you should bring. Some people run a burst elementalist and use things like arcane blast/ wave into a phoenix/ firegrab combo during CC(you can do the whole rotation in like 1.7-2 seconds with practice) while others prefer bringing a condition removing elementalist if they feel their composition is weak to the condition spamming teams like grenade engineers and corrupt/epidemic necromancers.

I personally enjoy playing support more, as I feel other classes fill the elementalists dps/ burst role better than they do. But for hotjoins or soloqueue, you can completely wreck the other team with a dps elementalist if you practice and pay attention to their dodge rolls(since their big abilities are very telegraphic, they are easy to dodge.)

Engineer- There are several different kinds of specs that utilize grenades. You’ll probably always run toolkit and the invuln elixer or an elixer that removes conditions, so that can leave one spot open for grenades, or you can always just toggle your skills(like you should on any profession) and switch to grenades when you think you can utilize them the best. Obviously grenades benefit from condition damage and engineers can put out a ton of constant conditions which make it hard for the enemy to keep up with cleanses or waste big CDs on conditions you can instantly reapply. So if you want to run grenades as a main source of damage but also be tanky, you could run pistol/shield with toolkit, condition removal elixer, and grenades.

Necro- S/D + Staff playstyle, for me, involves me focusing classes that rely on stacking boons(guardians, some bunker eles, engineers, anyone you notice running runes of lyssa which are mostly warriors and thieves) and hit them with corrupt boon. You keep pressuring them with scepter auto attacks(for the constant poison application) and feast while interrupting their heals with fear and apply chill so it takes 33% longer for them to channel heal. Save your dagger 4 skill to remove conditions from yourself for some counter play, and use your blinds and fears to peel and prevent stomps on teammates. It’s a pretty straight forward, easy to learn build that is very rewarding once you gain team fighting awareness and how to play against certain professions/ small skirmishes. This build is more or less built to go to the middle point and serve as dps/ support. You can burst one target with corrupt boon, or you can put out massive aoe with a good corrupt into epidemic. Both corrupt boon and epidemic have pretty short cooldowns, so it’s easy to keep the pressure up.

You’ll likely have the hardest time learning to kite and survive as a necromancer. It doesn’t have a steep learning curve, but it does have a frustrating learning curve. But I, personally, enjoy playing with a handicap, so I didn’t mind it much. Necromancers are stronger than ever right now, however.

Shinoobi.1259

All three of those classes have extremely fun and somewhat currently viable bunker builds. And luckily for you, all three of those classes have high skill caps at top tier of play.

Bunker Elementalist is all about saving your dodges and counting enemy dodges so you can help your DPS take down a focused target. Also you’ll be saving your cooldowns unselfishly to help remove conditions and heal your teammates more than just kiting for yourself(you should be trying to do this even in hotjoin). Use your mobility to go in and out of fights with D/D or S/D(I personally love magnetic aura and aura sharing a lot, so I run D/D). I run clerics, even if Knights is sometimes better for -me-, clerics is better for -everyone else-. The only con is do not expect to be getting too many kills. If you want kills while playing bunker build, you may enjoy ranger more. If you play as a support and focus on trying to prevent stomps, ressing, and assiting your team, you’ll have more fun.

Bunker Engineer(I used the healing bomb/ toolkit/ pistol+shield spec) is a lot of fun. It’s a very dynamic profression with you always pushing buttons. You survive and assist your team with disruption and healing in small chunks while applying conditions and interrupting enemies at the right time. It likely requires the most practice and fine tuning for your playstyle, but it feels really rewarding when you get use to it. A con for me is the condition removal for bunker engineer is a lot lower than elixer dps build.

Bunker Necromancer, I have no experience with. I’ve always ran S/D + Staff condition build. I haven’t tried anything else. I absolutely hate minions in PvP, and Lichform is really janky in PvP. So I can’t recommend any bunker necromancer play, because you’re -expected- to bring things like corrupt boon and you need things like spectral walk and spirit armor for your own survivability. You can peel and prevent stomps really well, but being bunker spec won’t help you do that over DPS.

All my opinions. I know some of these things have been effected by recent patches.

Warrior: Offhand Sword vs Offhand Shield

in Warrior

Posted by: Shinoobi.1259

Shinoobi.1259

I use to love running Sword(or mace. I loved having two parries while out of endurance)/ Sword + Longbow. The amount of bleeding and burning damage you could put out with sword 4 and longbow 5 into F1 combo was a lot of fun. I think switching it to torment was a big damage nerf. Also, needing to go into tactics for the increased longbow range(pretty necessary for WvW. You could probably get away with skipping it in sPvP) just makes any possible build combination lacking in some form or another. If they moved longbow traits to the power/ condition duration line, then it would have good build opportunity, but for now it just doesn’t do enough damage compared to other condition professions to warrent not going tanky/ CC bot with condition removal.

You’re better off going berserker and axe/shied + rifle or something. Condition warriors (with longbow) are kinda messy right now.

I know a lot of people use the longbow to great effect in WvW/ sPvP, but my bottom line is the trait build for sword/sword + longbow is really clunky, so you either just bring longbow for the utility/ pressure and use a hammer with it and forget condition damage all together or just use sword/shield and set up other people for kills. My opinions.

I would prefer if there was a medium of players in every map except their own BL. This would encourage more defensive play by bunkering up their border land while allowing larger enemy guilds to invade an enemy’s BL with equal numbers. Right now, it seems there is only a MAX amount of players that can enter a BL instead of a minimum base. When you are in the minimum base at the moment, you receive an outmanned buff(visible by other players which queues them to be offense, which seems to be more harming than helpful).

At the moment, on CD, within an hour of reset, we lost most of our BL to TC because of sheer numbers. It had nothing to do with tactics or being out played—it was a game of numbers. They had such a sizable force on EB, their BL, SoS BL, and our BL that we just could not compete. I understand that players should be able to play WvW when they want, but balancing the number game by adding a queue when numbers are uneven wouldn’t be a terrible thing- who knows, it may even promote more sPvP(which is currently desolate).

This game wants to be centered around a strong PvP base, but this is a simple quality of life change that can improve player experience easily.

Gearing D/D Elementalist

I’ve been playing with a different set up recently. I would not advise this in sPvP where you definately need some precision gear/ sigil of energy/ maybe Arcane Blast to keep vigor up, but I’ve geared completely for Power → Condition Damage → Vitality. A lot of D/D elementalist seem to rely on their Fire Grab burst combo, but it is really unreliable in WvW with it’s short range and insanely high cooldown. The amount of condition damage you can pump out with Dragon’s breath and the typical churning earth/ teleport trick is pretty high. I use sigil of battle for might stacking and a +%5 damage. With the might stacking, your conditions slowly get more and more powerful the longer the fight goes on, so I just geared for “I know these skills are going to hit, so why not make them do the most damage I can?” It’s working nicely so far, but you’ll not see any amazing Fire Grab burst unless you use arcane power for some kind of instant gib(but if you did that, you’d be better off wearing beserker gear).

Longbow Warrior Suggestion

While I have had some success with the Longbow in PvE, sPvP(top ranking, zero deaths multiple times), and WvW, there is something that continues to confuse me. I will explain my logic and the build I am using before I go into my suggestions(suggestion is at bottom/build here).http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#mMRVmm0M0MwnGmMwnGmGp0afVRcRmo

I am currently running Mace/ Sword -> Longbow. I am specced for condition damage, and it typically goes something like this-> Pin Down 12k bleed( the lack of cast time and quick animation usually makes it difficult to dodge unless you’re at max range)-> Combustive Shot-> Switch Weapons, Impale(8.5-9k bleed)-> Bull’s Charge-> Healing Surge-> Mace Stun-> Pull sword out. If they aren’t dead by then, you have two riposites that will hit for a lot of damage, and one of them applies another 9k bleed if you’re specced for condition damage. If you manage to keep them in combustion field for the entirety, it does around 30k damage. Stability craps all over longbow, everytime, no matter if you outplay. The only mandatory utility is bull’s charge. Use whatever else you’re comfortable with. I use condition removal and either throw bolas or endure pain.

Now, that’s usually how I handle 1v1 situations with longbow. WvW in zergs my role is to call targets and immbolize stragglers, use pin down/ throw sword on WvW offense, combustive shot/ arcing blow on WvW defense. The greatsword is fine for mobility, but when you’re travelling with a zerg, you getting to point A-B-A -alone- does not contribute as much to warrant having a useless melee weapon for a condition build when mace/sword gives you more defense/utility in melee range.

My suggestion has to do with the longbow being in the tactical tree. I have no clue why it is there. The longbow does not benefit from vitality and boon duration doesn’t benefit any single weapon choice. The weapon doesn’t scale from health, and it doesn’t grant any boons. The only thing I can think of is that it’s the only warrior weapon that can offer and make use of a combo field(so it’s… tactical?). But isn’t that a little strange? Why not place it in Arms where it can make use of precision and condition damage, since that is what you’ll be speccing for when you equip a longbow anyway. The Rifle applies ZERO conditions but it is in Arms(I know (5) in Arms applies bleeds on critical hits, but that logical is backwards when comparing it to a longbow).

My suggestion is to place the longbow traits in the Arms tree instead of Tactics, because the weapon does not benefit from vitality and and doesn’t offer any boons, and the builds that take advantage of longbow as a primary weapon do not prioritize vitality or any shouts or signets(so boon duration is meh) besides Signet of Rage(because what else are you gonna use). And I don’t understand some ranged weapons having 900 range and having to spend 10 points and a trait to increase it to 1200. It’s -so- necessary to have 1200 range on a ranged weapon that it shouldn’t be an option to take it or not. It should just be mandatory on ranged weapons.

Monthly did not reset

in Players Helping Players

Shinoobi.1259

Greetings. I recently started playing again last month, but I did not finish my monthly for Feburary. It did not reset in March, and I was able to complete it in March. I’m curious as to whether or not monthly progress carry over from month to month or if they reset at the beginning of the month. My guild tells me that they do reset at the beginning of each month, but this was surely not the case for myself. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, did it reset for you the next month?
