Deception: This downed-state skill no longer requires a target in order to cast.
Dev note: This will allow for mesmers to better use their survival skill when facing an opponent using stealth.
While we’re at it, can we make it ground-targeted instead of random? I’m so tired of porting into an even worse AoE because of RNG gods. And dieing because I used a “survival” skill.
Did you pray to Lyssa before you press 2? I suggest you to do that first.
I’m not really sure these changes will change nothing, We can see now how a double bunker + 3 zerker comps (like TCG, 2 cele + 3 zeker) can do really well against a 4 cele/5 cele or soldier/1 zerk.
Hambow warrior was nerfed too with these changes (+ ele celestial/engi) so i think we’ll see a meta more shifted to zerker setup instead of a pure tank/bunker comps. Mesmer torch was buffed + TW.
Is it a buff for TCG comp? Maybe, i think it will be really interesting to watch next tournaments. I think TCG and 55hp with Strong mesmer meta will do the difference.
My two cents.
Apparently ROM, Tage and Denshee have left TCG to form a team with Cheese Mode. Only Helseth, Sizer and Texbi are left. What team comp are you talking about?
Where dem mesmer hands at! \o/
People use staff?
There’s people who don’t use Staff? :O

Thank you! I really appreciate this, trying to learn spvp and take the step out from the training arena.
Edit:
I see you’re really fluent with the forward phase shift, how do you do it? reverse key/PR/reverse? or do you use the mouse? Any tips, I often miss the last reverse for some kitten reason so I run back.. lolIt is exactly as you said, just make sure you do it without a target. Over time it becomes easier to pull off and if you have decent internet it will be flawless.
Thanks both of you! I guess I gotta keep practicing it, lots of practice opportunities in WvW
Internet is very good so I can’t blame that..Is the goal to press them in order as fast as possible or will I PR in the wrong direction if I press to soon after? What’s the correct rytm?:
A) R-PR-R
B) R—PR—R
C) R—PR-R?
D) “Dude what are you talking about, just practice it.”
I’m sure it’s not A, B or C
try aboutFace-PR———aboutFace2
if aboutface2 is pressed too early, you don’t turn back to the front
Mirror Images needs a target to be activated
In the thief video, it says “If there’s incoming, don’t engage the fight unless it’s a thief or a mesmer.” so they know we got hard countered by them?
If you’re going power shatter mesmer, it might be better given how you strip a boon per illusion. This means no boons on your opponent to keep them strong or safe.
It is not 1 boon strip per illusion, it’s 1 boon strip per shatter if I remember correctly.
It is 1 boon strip per illusion.
but I think the mesmer itself can strip a boon too. So 1 mind wrack can has 4 boons striped
Anyone thinks that anet changed it because of the ranger buff? So we can’t reflect rapid fire.
one more day to wait~
In Battle of Kyhlo, there is a spot to phase retreat to the roof(the pole) from inside the clocktower. Helseth has done it accidently in his stream
The current meta is double ranged because the sword main-hand before September patch was too buggy(#3). In addition, staff is easier and better for kiting.
sw/t is slightly better than staff when against thieves – Helseth
The choice between Halting Strike and Mental Tourment traits is explained in Supcutie’s guide:
- 2.5 interrupts per 11 seconds for Halting Strike to break even with Mental Torment.
- Mental Torment is more consistent damage and has more downed body cleave.
- Halting Strike however means you are not “putting all your eggs in one basket”*
Illusionary Invigoration is harder to maximize to its efficiency in my opinion.
about the condition shatter not good in team fight, does it mean that the clones will whether get cleansed before pressing shatter key or will be cleansed while the clones running to the opponent?
(edited by Shintei.9061)
I have been playing mesmer since the game launches. It is sad to repeatedly hear those top tier competitive players saying that mesmer is not viable in high end matches. With the reason similar to Supcutie, Zoose, 2014 NA all-stars who plays elementalist, have said “Who the hell still playing that class (mesmer)” as a reference that mesmer is not viable in high tier games. In the 2014 international all-stars tournament, I was so depressed that Supcutie chose to play thief (and ranger?) instead of mesmer. I have given myself a reason that maybe mesmer does not fit into the team composition. Furthemore, even with the difference between peasants and kings, Helseth had not overcome the mesmer’s disadvantages and recently learning necromancer with the excuse that, “[he] is so good as a mesmer, and mesmer doesn’t make [him] grow as a player anymore, so [he] pick another class.” The nightmare of my mesmer spirit has not end here, yet, my depression to mesmer is growing as it comes to the match-ups against thieves.
Thieves are known as the hardest counter to us in our mesmer community. I often found it difficult to play against thieves in 1v1 situation or in the teamfight when the thief is targeting me. A video published by Vashury has given some great tips against thieves, but that does not seem to work in high competitive games due to thieves’ high mobility. I have won fights against one or even two thieves in my experience, however, this does not build up my confidence on mesmer. As I watch the gameplays of some top tier thieves, e.g. Magic Toker, Sizer and Vanish, I know that the thieves I have beaten are just terrible (like really terrible). Additionally, the guessing game against thieves that Supcutie mentioned is “you guessed wrong, you die. If you guess it right, you have a slightly chance to win”. Helseth has also given some tips against thieves with different builds but is followed by “then you die, because he is still a thief”. From the mouth of the top tier mesmer players, I feel hopeless against thieves.
Do we really need to live under the fear of the shadows? Can the innocent purple butterflies escape from the shadows and create a butterfly effect on the battlefield that is not a team building around it?
continue with trolls
With the underperformance of mesmer in top tier games (maybe with some other classes like necro and ranger), we can see how anet did a great job to balance the game. On the other hand, we already having a hard time to level our class compare to others (don’t tell me about eotm or zergs, these are for losers…or for another character). In dungeons, there are always better choices (except the portal in cof! Is it p1 or p2?). Or are we just the veil bot(What is it btw, putting veil for team?)?
OR can we get a staff phantasm that is holding a staff and make a mist version of that staff so I can have an excuse to not get the bifrost?
OR just let me see some butterflies when I dodge, just like the thieves have a special effect on their dodge?
trolls ended
Okay, now I can back to practice my mesmer.
please allow me to troll more
last one I promise
*How can the thieves steal something that is not even exists?? consume plasma!!?? gain all boons!!?? we can’t even do that as a mesmer itself (except with pre-nurf lyssa runes). where did the thieves steal that from?

yoloq => mass invis
with team => mass invis or moa
so ive been doing pvp for while now and the only class i constantly have a problem with is mesmers. can’t fuigure out how to beat them. i look for buffs but half the time the clones have the buff to. i’ve try playing mesmer to get a feel for how to beat them but can’t seam to figure out how these mesmers do it cause i get wrecked all the time on mine. anyone have any advise?
So just to clarify, I understand that you’re having general difficulties with mesmers, but are you also having difficulties picking the real mesmer out of the clones?
yeah more with picking out the real one more so than actually fighting them but advise on both is appreciated
So there’s a whole bunch of different characteristics that you’ll learn to just automatically see when fighting mesmers. I’ll try and list as many as I can here.
Movement
Clones move as if they can only use the forward key. They never strafe, never move backwards, never dodge roll. Any of those movements instantly will identify the real mesmer.Skills
Clones only spam the autoattack of a given weapon over and over. The one using any skills whatsoever is always the mesmer.Boons
Clones have a quite limited selection of boons. They’ll rarely get vigor, rarely get might, rarely get swiftness, rarely get protection. The mesmer will often get multiple boons, regardless of build.Persistent Bar Effects
Mantras, signets, food buffs, wvw orb buff, anything like that will show up on the mesmer, but not the clones (be wary of signet of illusions, as it does show up on illusions, unlike all the others). Seeing those persistent bar effects all identify the real mesmer.Stealth
Mesmer only has one source of aoe stealth that actually ends up applying to clones: mass invisibility. The clones will generally get revealed rapidly due to their autoattacks, while the mesmer will remain in stealth longer. All other sources of stealth for the mesmer are self only (I’m ignoring veil for the moment, as clones tend not to walk through veil). This means that if you see one stealth and then unstealth, that’s the mesmer. That’s pretty much it. If you learn all of those little characteristics of the mesmer, you’ll be able to instantly identify the mesmer every time.
Edit: I like OMFG as much as the next guy, but fo real -_-
You forgot to list out that you will not see off-hand weapon on clones.
If you’re going power shatter mesmer, it might be better given how you strip a boon per illusion. This means no boons on your opponent to keep them strong or safe.
It is not 1 boon strip per illusion, it’s 1 boon strip per shatter if I remember correctly.
Decoy, mass invisibility then blink, perhaps with distortion? Nice, now you have no cooldown
Well I said that it wont transport me.
You actually didn’t say this at all; you just said that ‘it fails’. Saying it won’t transport you is far more useful for me.
The other guy expands on that saying what he first thought and then that you need to have enemy visible.
He did say this, it’s 100% inaccurate though. iLeap has no LoS or in-vision check. As a matter of fact, no skill in the game has an in-vision check, though many require you to be facing the target.
Now you claim to have more information on how to do an ileap correctly. Can you do that, with a high degree of precision
Absolutely.
So here’s the deal. You say it won’t transport you. There’s a couple things that could cause that.
Option 1: The clone doesn’t get summoned. This can happen for 2 main reasons. The most obvious is that you’re out of range. The skill will go on cooldown, but it’ll do nothing. This is pretty obvious though, so I’ll assume you’re using it at the proper range.
There is actually a bug associated with this. It happens very rarely though, so it isn’t your problem, but it’s worth mentioning. Sometimes if you’re close to maximum range but still in range the skill will act as though you’re out of range and just fail. This is a bug that still happens unfortunately.
Option 2: The clone dies. This is my guess as to the root of your issues. I haven’t seen you on these forums before, and looking at your forum posting history I see that you’ve been gone for about a year. What this tells me is that you may be unaware of a massive nerf that Anet smacked this skill with a month or so ago.
It used to be the case that you could swap to the clone’s last location even if it died. Anet, in their infinite wisdom, deemed this to be a bug after 2 years of the game and ‘fixed’ it. Now the swap only works if the clone is alive. Unfortunately, they didn’t feel the need to do the change properly. If the clone dies, the ‘swap’ skill still shows on your bar. You can use the swap…and simply nothing wil happen. This sounds like what you’re experiencing.
Due to this change, basically the only way left to use iSwap is to mash 3 as fast as possible to swap instantly, because the clone will die and make the skill fizzle if you do anything else.
This is what it looks like
overwriting clones?
