Was super excited for this balance update. Heard that thief/daredevil was supposed to get a big buff since it got looked over with HoT’s release. Went to PvE… killing things took much longer, even though according to the notes I’m supposed to be doing more damage. Headed over to PvP…that was a joke. Still getting instant melted by engi’s that can pound on ya without losing stealth. It seems the only real improvement was basilisks venom.

Has anyone had any luck changing up their build since this bogus balance update?

Idk if we’re playing the same game. I’m killing everybody except Druids. Staff auto more powerful and Withdraw fixed. Other classes got nerfed which means a buff for us. Idk man, maybe l2p?

Not only Rev’s damage got butchered (aside from not even buffing staff or just anything else in fact) it also got it’s survability neutered lol. Come on, I can get the AA nerf but because we were promised attention on other things. ANETs response seems to be to always to overnerf and overbuff things simultaneously… and each 3 kittening months

The logic is..we feel rev sword auto is too high so we nerf it and buff thief auto to even more ridiculous level bc logic. We want thief to spend init on defense.. like rev doesnt need energy for defense but again logic so its all okay.

Ok I’ve never played Rev but wasn’t this basically what the Rev did? I mean it makes sense for thief to get this buff because no one was picking us for raids. Now you can because we have the highest dps now. It’s now mandatory to bring a thief to Raid because bringing one rev will be enough for its boons. So all in all, nothing to whine about.

Blind on demand
weakening charge+endurance gain
Vault.
Auto does good+applies vulnerability
debil arc has its uses.

Con’s
Consumes loads of energy
Requires daredevil, no choice here.
Bounding is good, but you have to forgo unhindered.

Dagger/pistol (as you see it)
Ok auto attack+poison+endurance gain+double strike
Heart seeker is a leap finisher that gets better vs >50% health targets+low initiative
Shadow shot is a great gap closer.
Head shot is great too+ Works well with pulmonary.
Black powder…blind on demand. makes stomping a lot easier.
You can stealth with these weapons
Backstab only does max damage from behind..behind shots can be had, with weakening charge or vault you have 100% no chance.

Cons.
weak cleave
longer aftercasts-soon to be buffed.
can’t trait for both damage and defense..either 100% of one or nothing.

So according to what you think, you’ve listed more pro’s for D/P than you have for Staff. There is also more variety in traits you may take with D/P. D/P has overall less con’s.

Still confused why people take it?..or can we consider this matter resolved for now?

Yes. When I use D/P I can’t for the life of me land a backstab from behind. Whether its because of them dodging or using their blocks or invulns and not to mention its inferior damage compared to Vault and WC. So you end up losing 9 initiative. With staff, all I do is use dust stike(only 4 initiative) which does ok damage while blinding them. I follow that with autos and keep rotating between dust strike and auto until I see a good chance to pop WC. I also know when to pop Vault when all their dodges are gone. With D/P I’ll try to land the BP>HS>Backstab but again, in high level this is just not going to happen. Especially in 1v1s is where I notice a huge drop off in my ability to 1v1. I know it’s not the thief’s role but sometimes you have to, especially when going againts classes like Rev and Necros. D/P is great for ganking and taking out low hp players but other than that I can’t think of anything that D/P gives me that staff doesn’t already and then some. Sure you get stealth but you are not killing anyone with its damage and that is even if you get the backstab in. And this will just leave you more vulnerable because half your initiative will be gone. Atleast with staff, you gain a lot of endurance for using initiative skills so even if you miss you get something back. The one thing I love about D/P tho is the headshot.

Now that season has ended I thought I’d pose something that has really bugged me: The choice between Staff and D/P. Now I’m not saying I’m one of the better Theives out there but reaching legendary x2 using only thief should stand for something. Anyways, the weapon of my choice was always staff. For me, it was just a nice blend of offense mixed with defense. Your better at team fights while also still being the +1 person on the team. You’re also better at 1v1s with staff. So the thing that bugs me is why are people still using D/P when, imho, staff is clearly the superior weapon. With Staff you literally get blind on demand. You get not one but two heavy hitting attacks in WC and Vault. Auto does good dmg and also applies vuln. Staff 3 even has uses in certain scenarios.

With D/P you get an ok AA dmg. HS is only good when ur opponents is below 50%. Shadow Shot is a great gap closer but Vault is good too. Headshot is great too. BP is ok I guess. Sure with D/P u get stealth on demand but it’s so easily countered in high level play that I don’t even trait any stealth skills at all. Back stab is inferior to both WC and Vault and only does its max dmg from behind.

Any thought or opinions? I’d really like to hear from the thieves who stand by D/P and why u prefer it over staff.

It could be a lot worse trust me. And you know what, since ur qq, how about whine about Rev clearly OP “Stab on dodge” or “Taunt just for being next to you.” Seriously, all the classes you could whine about and you whine about Thief? Sorry, but I’m with Rayden, if you feel at a disadvantage, change profession. I did really well this season on my warrior. Sure it wasn’t easy to come up with a good build that could counter a lot of what is popular, but its doable. I only made it to diamond playing soloq, but I didn’t play much as I can’t play gw2 more than a few hours a day. There are warriors and thieves that made it to legend. I think for thieves, the trick this season was either being an amazing thief, or playing some venomshare build. For warrior, we had gunflame and some strong sustain control builds. (Which is most of what I played)

The next season will start and we will get to see how things work out. No need to extend the season.

Agreed. I made it to Legendary x2 only rolling thief. Solo Q to Ruby, then duo/trio Q to Diamond, then duo Q halfway to legendary then Solo Q all the way to Legendary Prestige. I played a Staff build that I came up with. The more I played with my build the better I got and the more wins I got.

Make "Chill to the bone" blind immune!

I think having 90 sec elite that can be canceled easly by the easy applying blind ruins the whole point of it. At least give us the stab upon finishing the animation.There is no logic that an attack that is not require aiming and the point of that attack is to strike any of the sorroundings enemies regardless where they at would be avoided by simply apply blind.

I know that if you gonna make that skill blind immune there are similar skills that should have blinb immune, like warrior gs burst skill but it is not an elite with 90s cd. I thnik you should make an exception for elites since the long cd they have.

Stop complaing. You know how hard it is to land Impact Stike of my Thief because of all the stab being thrown around? If you want your skill to be immune to blind then have Anet make Impact Strike a guaranteed daze.

From my understanding, the only achievements that reset are the Leauge achievements. That ones that say “cross 4 divisions in a singe season” or something like that. So if you only crossed 3 divisions and the season ends, the achievement will reset.

As for when next season begins, my guess would be March 1st

It’s the first one on every “Year of the Ascension Part #” For example, in Year of the Ascension Part 3, there is an Achievemnt called “League Champion” which requires the player to cross 3 divisions in a SINGLE season. So in this case, if the player wanted to get this Achievemnt in season 1, they would have to cross Ruby, Diamond and Prestige Legendary once. So by the end of the season, if the player only crossed Ruby and Diamond but did not Prstige Legendary, that means they have only completed 2/3 of the achievement. Since the Achievemnt says you must cross 3 divisions in a SINGLE season, yes you have to cross THREE divisions in ONE season, and the player didn’t cross 3 divisions in a SINGLE season, the Achievemnt will reset.

Reread the achievement it does not say cross league divisions in a SINGLE season it says "cross “x” league division thresholds during a PVP season"

Hmm could have sworn it said a single season. Haven’t looked at the achievements since hitting Legendary 2 weeks ago.

Blinding powder should be a base skill for thief. Having at least 1 skill that puts us in stealth makes sense considering we are masters of stealth. I just feel having blinding powder as one of ur utility skills is such a waste because of its god awful CD and it’s only a 3s stealth. Anet, please make Blinding Powder a base skill, f3 skill, for thief.

1 DH floats home/mid to prevent thief decap, other 3 and the necro sit mid. Tell me, exactly how is the op’s team supposed to win with their comp?

LOL DH are super squishy when u get past their boons. Not only that ur had 2 Druids and a Mesmer. On top of that you were playing Engi which has one of the best team fight mechanics. And to add to that, the thief soft counters the necro. No way one should lose to 4 DHs with that comp.

I doubt it. It’s just like when mesmer mantras were broken: bad mesmers would just get rekt by good mesmers.

The only thing I fear is Acro being viable and every bad thief playing the passive invuln. I don’t know who at Anet thinks that passive invuln are fun, but this has to stop.

Well the fact almost every class has some form of access to invuln, it’s only fair that Anet gives it to Thief too.

Yeah that’s the short term answer but looking at how passives have messed this game up, I would rather all classes lose most of their passives. The ideal situation would be that when a character makes too many mistakes they have to pay for them. Less “get out of jail for free” mechanics equals more skilled play.

This was the obviously easier solution for Anet to implement, and I am happy that we at least got that, but its also a dream of mine to rid the game of most passives and have game play revolve more around skilled combat.

Oh yeah I agree. I would love to see passives eradicated but that’s not going to happen anytime soon. If you can’t beat them, join them.

I’m sorry, I don’t want to sound harsh, but you must have met very bad DHs, Scrappers and Eles.

When I’m playing especially on scrapper, I just melt down ANY thief, the class can’t really face it.

What are your thoughts of Thief in 1v1s?

For me, I never had a problem beating other Thieves, Warriors, Necros and Revs. The classes that gave me trouble but were manageable were DH, Eles and Scrapper. Classes I could only beat if I was on my A game were Druids and Mesmers.

Heavy because the were going for the Profession Achievemnt. From my knowledge, it is said going after this specific Achievemnt causes the player to gain lots of weight this becoming extremely heavy.

Solo Q is not bad, when the players do their job right. The problem and the ONLY problem with soloQ is you run the risk of having someone going for the profession achievement thus forcing them to use a class they don’t main. This usually results with them, the player going for the profession achievement, being a heavy burden to the team and the team has to carry this profession achievement hunting player. The people who say premades are a problem need a reality check. Most of these premades are literally 5 random players in a party, it’s no different then soloQing and getting 4 random teammates. A good thing to do, and I ALWAYS do this, is to kindly ask anyone who is going for the profession achievement to switch back to their main. This has helped a lot and believe or not, it works. They will actually switch back to their main and we end up winning a game we probably wouldn’t have had the players not switch back to their mains.

The Next Necro Meta

In the current meta thief is only strong vs necro / warrior / other thieves. Even then, some thief builds really struggle vs necros due to a lack of condi removal – not all of them have easy chill / poison removal.

Thief can rarely wins vs reveneant, druid or chronomancer. You will never win vs a scrapper, bunker ele or non braindead dragonhunter.

I still think this is a great change, people might think twice about spamming boons. Necros are gonna get double focused now, and they are already susceptible to this. Consequently a necro heavy comps will not work that well, things will have to be mixed up.

Ehhh I’ll list the classes that, for me, are the hardest to kill to easiest startung with tier 1 being the hardest

Tier 1: Mes, Ele
Tier 2: DH, Ranger, Scrapper,
Tier 3: Necros, Warr, Rev, Other Theives

Lol thieves hard counter Necros. Only class I never have a problem fighting. Our evades cure the chill u guys spit out. We can easily kite Necros too when they are in shroud form. And as soon as that shroud goes away, boom burst. Dont get me wrong, Necro is strong and will be in the next meta but It’s really a fight of fastest profession vs slowest profession.

Thieves don’t hard counter anyone right now. If you are losing to a thief, it is just how you play against them. On a positive note, necros will be even stronger after the next patch so you;ll have an even better chance

True. In the past, before this bullcrap meta, Thief has always countered Necro and with the patch coming, I don’t see that changing.

Impact Strike: Good or not?

Hmm with BV getting buffed it gives us Thieves more options in terms of build variety. Which is something we lacked. Impact strike has won me many games because it can bypass down state helping me instantly res my team by stomping. But it’s really inconsistent even with my power build because the last hit can crit so i never know if it’ll be an instant stomp or not. But imo it’ll be a toss up between Impact and BV when it gets buffed because both have their advantages.

I see BV useful againts classes like Mes and scrapperand ok for the others but Impact is great againts all classes. BV only has 2 hits anyway so that is something to consider.

Assassin is junk. I’ve played with both Maruder and Berserker. I’ve had a lot of success with Berserkers just because it offers the most damage. Zerker with staff is amazingly powerful, Vault can crit up to 9k and Weaking charge is even more powerful. The only downside to Zerker is you’ll be extremely squishy. But imo the 500 extra hp you’d get is totally not worth the power of zerker. And since DD has so many dodges anyway it’ll be hard for ppl hit you and when your dodges run out it doesn’t matter because they would already be dead. The only trouble I’ve had is with condi heavy classes but again, not really a problem if u kill them first.

@OP: Translation: If chronomancer is nerfed, we need another broken spec to replace it. After all, there are a lot of legendaries who got there based on the broken bunker spec. What will they do in season 2?

I think it would be really cool if Daredevil dodges were stun breaks. It would totally fit the character as thieves are slippery kittens. Anet I hope you take a look into this. And what are your guys’ thoughts? Should daredevils have stun breaks in their dodges?

You provide some good info although I disagree on some.

The comparison on rev is so so in general, we all know that rev is such a broken class, heavy armor, high boon uptime, high damage, decent sustain, no counterplay heal, and so on.

You can compare any damage class to revenant and that class would fail in comparison.

I do agree that thief needs higher hp since it relies on stealth on active defenses. 15 Initiative is too much, why? you wanna see evade spamming thieves even more?

About balancing for pros, everyone starts as a noob, even the pros started as noobs, I do not see why new players can’t practice to be better and we should just make everything easier in a sense.

So you guys are saying we should balance around casuals then?

Are you seriously complaing about Thief evades? Can we first put light on the fact Druids have like a 7s Invulnerability? Or the fact that every class has some form of access to protection and invulnerability? Or how every class has some form of regeneration?

If you actually read the post made after this one, I said I am actually fine by it, the one thing I am concerned about is people will complain about it here again on the forums like how everybody complains all the time then thief will get nerfed again even more on all the wrong places.

Please tell me I’m not the only one feeling iffy about what Anet described regarding the Thief. Basically, they want to increase our auto dmg and rework the Acrobatics line. Two things came to mind.
1.) I’ve NEVER had a problem with Thief auto.
2.) I’ve NEVER used the Acrobatics line anyway.

The damage increase is fine I guess but even if they do rework Acro, I believe it still won’t be used because Trickery and DA would just be more superior to it.

What I would have liked is:
1.) 15k Hp base
2.) 15 initiative base
3.) Significant CD on many of the Thief skills. (Black Podwer, 40s CD for a 3s stealth? Seriously?)
4.) Some form of access to protection and invulnerability
5.) Rework of skills’ initiative cost. (Pistol 5 and dagger 5 is 6 initiative. They’re need to be decreased to 5 imitative for pistol 5 and 4 for dagger 5.)

You provide some good info although I disagree on some.

The comparison on rev is so so in general, we all know that rev is such a broken class, heavy armor, high boon uptime, high damage, decent sustain, no counterplay heal, and so on.

You can compare any damage class to revenant and that class would fail in comparison.

I do agree that thief needs higher hp since it relies on stealth on active defenses. 15 Initiative is too much, why? you wanna see evade spamming thieves even more?

About balancing for pros, everyone starts as a noob, even the pros started as noobs, I do not see why new players can’t practice to be better and we should just make everything easier in a sense.

So you guys are saying we should balance around casuals then?

Are you seriously complaing about Thief evades? Can we first put light on the fact Druids have like a 7s Invulnerability? Or the fact that every class has some form of access to protection and invulnerability? Or how every class has some form of regeneration?

What should i do?

What isn’t dumb about PvP atm? I seriously cannot think of one thing that isn’t dumb. The fact this game is now completely about CC and whichever team packs the most will usually win. The fact some classes are clearly superior to others. The fact at times you will be paired with a Diamond player that plays like an amber. All these and everything else are the dumb things in PvP.

well i’d like to see Scrappers absurd hammer damage coeffecients gone for good too.

Scrapper has MULTIPLE attacks on hammer that either have higher coefficients/damage than backstab or just around the same as backstab, and they all do something defensively as well. here’s a comaparison:

Backstab (something you have to enter stealth to access, then carefully position yourself to land for full damage, and only does damage; nothing else):
Front damage: 403 (1.2)?
Back damage: 806 (2.4)

I totally agree with this. Seems like diamond is full of awful players, and the ones on my team are the worst of them all… I just lost 6 pips straight, taking me from tier 3 to tier 1. I have been doing my best to carry the teams I’m on, but there is only so much one person can do. Skill-wise, my teammates seem to kind of know what they’re doing. As far as map awareness and rotation goes, however, I seem to wind up with people who are constantly fighting off point and making terrible decisions. Condi classes trying to fight DS eles 1v1 on a point the ele controls, dragonhunters chasing mesmers off point, thieves bunkering points, reapers and scrappers going for beast, that sort of thing.

Good to know its not just me. The lack of map awareness from my teammates at diamond level is just pathetic. Probably the dumbest most idiotic thing I’ve seen playing this game was when me and 2 others were fighting a rev and DH at mid, our cap. I down the DH and the Rev is at 20%, and for some reason that I have yet to figure out, my two teammates, at full health, leave me with the down DH and rev while I was at 50% health. The Rev knocks me back and rez the DH and now it’s 2v1. This is what cost us the game as they were able to take mid. I still have no idea where those 2 players went when they left me to a 2v1.
