I have 2 Thieves, my main is level 80 (human male) and my 2nd is level 71 (human female). But…

Did I roll another Thief because I enjoyed the profession? No!
Did I roll another Thief because the profession is fun? No!

None of those are the reason other than a simple fact that I’m male who appreciate the exquisite design of female characters. In other words, aesthetic is the reason.

Aesthetics are why I rerolled from sylvari to asura.

I will murder your shins.

Or bite my ankles. lol

Asura is a fun race regardless of the profession. Warrior Asura (which I have) when performing the 100-blades reminds me of Yoda fighting Dooku.

I fought an Elemental Weapon Elementalist once and I have to admit, it was a tough fight but I won that fight. I so hate the Lightning Hammer (stun) and the Earth Shield (pulled while in stealth – no running away from me). It’s like fighting Thor and Capt. America at the same time. Between the Attunements and the E.Weapons, that elementalist has an endless kitten nal to deliver a lot of hurt — but he screwed up and I won — barely.

its so sad there is a nerf wish list 4 the thief . u need a wish list telling u how to use your build against a thief lol thief’s r easy to kill if u do it right . the only class u should have trouble killing a thief with is like an element unless they r running a d/d regen element than the thief will have some trouble

You do realize this is just a joke thread, riiight?

(And please, use proper grammar and punctuation…I had to read your post 3-4 times to understand the gist of it.)

Not a joke, this is serious business. We can’t let a single game update without a Thief nerf…that would be an abomination!

There’s nothing you could do until you admit that your current setup is not working that you need to make a lot of changes.

Until then, you’re in a stasis.

EDIT: By the way, if you’re interested, I made some tweaks with your build that my mesmer is currently using. Other than the Ascended Items (since only my Thief has some), this is the build I’m currently running.

How else can you word this? Let’s see. How about…

Refill endurance for each ally and remove a condition from them.

I think that’s more clearer.

Let's yell at scripted agony

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

PvP should be about skill checks for progression.
PvE should be about stat checks for progression.

Fractals are PvE progression, thus the presence of a stat check mechanism.

Why can’t Fractals be skill based? Every agony attack except the agony on the three bosses can be avoided, why shouldn’t you be able to progress if you’re good enough? Agony is just a really lazy time/gold sink, and it really is making fractals a lot less enjoyable.

I used to wind up with low AR people in my groups a lot, but it didn’t matter because I knew they were good and could avoid the agony attacks. Now I can’t do that because if we get Mai Trin or Molten our group is toast.

or they can do it skill based like GW1, where any single regular mob (Mursats) will cast agony on you. Infused or endure.

Actually it’s more like the Environmental Effect in GW1.

First of all, test servers are often wiped after they release the patch, then recreated to match the current live server — so the achievement gained was understandable.

The build, skill, and weapon choices are probably to show that even a crappy build with crappy agony resistance can do the fractal.

What: Initiatives — too much
Why: Initiatives allows a Thief to spam skills while other professions has to wait for cool downs. Initiatives should be a maximum of 8 initiatives and 9 max when traited. Whenever the Thief use an initiative skill, they get stun for 2s which will effectively stop the spamming and help them to conserve initiatives for other skills. We just care so much for the profession that we don’t want them to be a bad boy that needs spanking.

I totally understand, and upon rereading my response to you, I can see a lot of resistance to change. I am ok with that for now, since this is my first real attempt on figuring out the D/D problem. Honestly, me and Panda were discussing that this build is just particularly weak to D/D’s (and I think most shatter builds in general). I posted this to see if it is even remotely possible with this build to survive an encounter. It might be the case that this build will ultimately fail, but I first want to develop the skill set I need as a player before I start scrapping builds.

Well then, just a couple (or more) of pointers then.

  1. Save your F4 unless it’s the only one left — Blink more if you must
  2. Blurred on HS — feed your sword to their daggers
  3. Block after taking a Backstab
  4. Don’t attempt to predict what the Thief will do because chances are, more likely than not, they are studying your reactions while they stay in stealth.
  5. Stay open to other possibilities — if something is not working, you’ll have to let it go (imagine how many things we Thieves have to let go in order to adapt)

Good luck to you.

Can Steal be revamped?

in Thief

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

Stealing REVAMPED

F1, F2, F3, F4: Steal. When successful, Steal is replaced with a stolen item. The rest of the steal slots are put on a short cooldown (5s) to prevent spamming. When a stolen item is used, the slot reverts to Steal and then placed on a longer cooldown (35s). Every other slot is placed on a short cooldown (5s). Maximum items stolen: 4.

I like it — but NO! Stealing every 5s for each slot will trigger Init-gain, Mug, Thrill, Sleight, etc

B-R-O-K-E-N!!!

I won’t even bother commenting on the stolen items…it’s just wrong.

1st: I wouldn’t consider my first F4 to be a waste. He used basilisk venom and then would have insta downed me with the subsequent HS and/or auto attacks.

It’s a waste because you didn’t have to do that if you had a stun breaker (see Mirror Images)

2nd: My blurred frenzy was an attempt to prevent a back stab, although probably a sword block would have been better (I was running off hand pistol when I was thinking this scenario through). Not sure what the alternative would be. I can’t just do nothing otherwise I’m getting hit with another 10k. Suggestions?

Two things: light a Torch when the Thief stealth — or — use the Staff’s Chaos Armor.

Off-hand sword is a sign that your you’re holding for everyone to see, “I’m an easy to down Mesmer — pick me!”

3rd: No blindness -> not in my build, and as I stated, I’m not looking to change it.
4th: blink, see previous.
5th: off-hand sword, see previous.

Well, you have to live with the consequences of that choice.

If you want to roam, you need to adapt and make changes. If you insist, then I hope I see you in WvW.

I am actually kind of surprised that you hate on the off hand sword. I get a block (and clone) or a daze (on a relatively short CD) and our hardest hitting single target phantasm in the game.

It’s not that I “hate” it, it’s not effective enough. You see if I’m the Thief I know you have a block and I know how to waste it — after that, you’re a sitting duck.

And blink?? Are you trolling me with this one…?

No troll here. Blink has a long cooldown that will leave you vulnerable after use. If you have not yet noticed, the Thief will simply shadowstep to where ever you blinked at. If not shadowstep, steal, or simply heartseeker. You are better off with Mirror Images as your stun breaker.

1st: I use it purely for burst. GS gets them to 50%, and bam to the face…

GS is fine, but Sw/Sw is not. With GS and Staff, you can have an endless wave of clones.

2nd: Good point, and I think that is probably the best option. I have to comment, you have great disdain for the sword, when it is our seemingly single best weapon in the game…

I have to disagree. Staff and GS are your best weapons. Torch is good at 1v1 (aka Roaming) and Focus is good in zergs. Sword main-hand, yes, but not the off-hand — there are better alternatives.

4th: no. Although MM i nice, I am not exactly in need of more damage, I am looking to stay alive. I’ve toyed with switching out my condi removal for MM. If only I had some sort of passive condi removal

MM is your key in staying alive, but I would replace blink instead.

5th: I am not picking up torch. Torch is next to useless in a power build. Staff is the epitome of defensive play…I don’t like how passive it is and it doesn’t suit my playstyle

Well, you don’t really have many option left if you eliminate those.

If you really want help to counter a Thief, then you need to explore all options, otherwise you’re stuck at your current state.

These are all fine suggestions for an overall look at my build, however none of these are helpful for specifically taking down (or even just surviving) a D/D thief (except the torch and blind, but that phantasm is too kittenty for me to even consider).

That’s all you have as a Mesmer. You resisted on two weapons that can help you on your quest to dominate a Thief. What else do you want?

Regardless, my build works as intended against every class except the D/D glass thief. I am not looking for build changes, only on execution/L2P.

Part of L2P is making adjustments, changes, and adapting to the situation. If you fail at taking out the Thief and still insist on your current gear that brought you that failure — then you haven’t learn anything after all.

It’s actually tweaked from one of the kings of shatter builds, Osicat. His was for solo roaming, and thus had a lot more survival than mine. All credit goes to that mastermind. Check it out!

I think I’ve seen that build, but I sure will check it out.

Thanks for your input.

Anytime.

-edit- It seems Arikyali.5804 has recommended removing blink as well and putting MM in its place. Granted, it will increase my dps, but I’m not sure if sacrificing my survivability is worth it. I should also mention I am in T1, so the chances of encountering an enemy zerg are high, and blink is the only thing keeping me alive.

All you can do is try it out and see how it works for you. If it’s not the right fit, you can always go back to Blink — but at least give MM some mileage and really try to use its full potential.

Thieves hit like wet noodles until you’re level 80. You’ll stay squishy, but it’s offset by the ability to burst stuff and evade their attacks.

I disagree. I’m currently leveling a 2nd Thief (out of boredom) and it’s not as you say. You just need to keep your gear up to date and gather every node you find for funding. Low level materials are selling high and should give you enough money to gear up. If gold is low, use your karma.

Also equip the Assassin’s Signet because this signet’s passive is great at low level.

Mesmer build for Roaming, Plz Critique!

From a Roaming Thief perspective, you’re an easy kill. You can stay in group with this build judging from your utility skills (feedback and mass invis), but unfortunately, you’ll have a hard time roaming with this compare to Thieves’ and Warrior’s roaming builds.

In my experience as a Thief, I respect the Staff/GS Phantom Shatter build. Other Mesmer builds are child’s play. You can’t crit what you can’t see, you can’t interrupt what you can’t see, and you can’t reflect a backstab.

But I’m open-minded on builds, you might just pull it off — who knows?

Well 7 more days and Stealth orientated thiefs, won’t be such an issue. (No offense)

Anyways I am running the black water build, but, I want to change over to a power build but not be so glassy, any thoughts?

None taken because a lot of Thieves agree, including me, that perma-stealth is a lame way to play Thieves. However, even after Dec10, your build will still have a hard time roaming. If you don’t face a Thief, what about Warriors?

- – thief is rather easy as other classes
ranger is just a no brain pve open world leveler.

All professions are easy because that’s how Anet made them to be, but you also have to consider that other players will have a hard time with certain professions, including players playing Warriors. Ranger, in fact, is not an easy profession for a lot of people who don’t know how to control their pets thus they generate a lot of hate in dungeons — so it’s not a “no brain” type of profession.

There are major L2P issues here.

1st wasting your F4
2nd wasting your Blurred Frenzy
3rd no blindness
4th Blink —really?
5th off-hand sword —really?

L2P advice:
1st only use F1 – low CD and stacks confusion – use often
2nd Blurred Frenzy only a Heartseeker – if you insist on using a sword main-hand, but use a torch off-hand
3rd you need blindness – obvious reasons
4th remove Blink and pick up Mirror Images – your build requires more clones and MM is a stun breaker
5th dump the off-hand sword, get a torch for blindness or just pick up a staff if you really want to be highly offensive plus you get Chaos Armor for regen and blindness.

Other preference:
I’d use Null Field over Arcane Thievery. Arcane Thievery is only good in PvE against bosses who stacks boon. In WvW, you’re better off with Null Field.

I like your build — I think I’ll use it for my Mesmer with some tweaking — you just need to pickup the right skills and not waste them. Your build is actually the kind I hate the most as a Thief, so please use it correctly.

It has a pretty long internal cooldown, or it sometimes gives vigor and fury rather then feathers. I actually do not mind if they made it do that all the time. Though I’d prefer might over fury.

Edit: Throw Feathers has a 60 second cooldown and when it is on cooldown, triggering Instinctual Response gives 10 seconds of fury and vigor in it’s place.

I never pick this trait since I rather take Thrill of the Crime, but if this is true, that would be awesome.

P/P single target damage?

in Thief

Sir Vincent III.1286

If you have full ’zerker, definitely, IMO, you need to go P/P for single target and use a sigil that triggers on crit hits (i.e. Sigil of Air – my recommendation). Then for AoE damage, definitely Shortbow — so bring both.

For structures (i.e. Catapults), when you can never score a crit hit, you should always have a Sword in your back pack and use Pistol Whip for a quick dispatch.

Sir Vincent III.1286

I’m currently a level 27 thief, and as I consulted the forums for advice, I’m finding that what looks great on paper does not equate so well to actual gameplay. For example, I’ve read posts that swear by both D/D and S/P. The problems I am having are that while D/D is great dps, it burns through initiative so quickly that I end up running around hopelessly trying to find the back of the monster that I usually take way too much damage… and don’t even get me started if there are two enemies, and i’ll be kittened if one is ranged. So, I read that D/D is good for single target DPS and I figured that was my problem in the open world where it’s not uncommon to aggro two or three enemies at once. So, I shelved the D/D until I come across a vet, and pull out my D/D + cloak + backstab + cloak and find that the veteran is only at 60% health and then I’m out of initiative and, alas, I get killed trying to dodge until my initiative regenerates.

The problem is, you need to have at least one ranged weapon set to give yourself a breather — which you definitely need at low level. The best one for leveling is either P/D or P/P. Having both weapon sets as melee will only get your killed…evidently.

Healing

in Thief

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

The problem I see in your build is the lack of Weakness, Poison, and Vulnerability applications. For your build, Weakness, Poison, and Vulnerability are your friends.

The problem with healing skills is that it puts you into defensive mode and that’s the window your opponent is waiting for to counter-attack. But if you stay in the offense, you will force them into defensive mode — meaning, they will be doing less damage to you because they are too busy healing themselves or getting rid of the condition.

I can give nearly permanent weakness through the sword auto attack, if I use it for the full attack chain. Poison won’t help me much by putting pressure on them, as I have no condition damage and poison is already weak condition damage. I don’t think condition pressure is going to stop people from trying to attack me once they realize I cannot heal at all. My only damage mitigation is evasion, which works well, but once my health pool gets low it tends to stay there for the remainder of the fight.

You’re forgetting that Poison also reduce their healing efficiency.

I have nothing else to tell you. If you choose to play defensive, then might as well grab a Cleric or a Magi set to boost your healing then go 30pts into Shadow Arts and 30pts into Crit Strike (Hidden Killer) and play hit-and-run (stealth + backstab).

Other than that, you really need to use your skills effectively — for example — traiting Mug (DA 10) will make you poison + damage + heal on steal; and when used on players trying to heal, you effectively cut their healing by 33% even though Poison did no condition damage.

Part of playing the Thief profession is knowing how to budget Initiatives. If you prefer a cooldown mechanic and you enjoy playing that kind of profession, feel free to roll a Warrior (or an Elementalist) and leave the Thief as is.

Note: Outside of auto-attack, Elementalist gets 4 skills per swap for each element for a total of 16 skills plus utilities. Engineer gets 4 skills per kit for each heal and utility slot for a total of 16 skills. You might like these professions instead.

I don’t know what the theorycrafting’s exact number is but 30% always worked out well for me. Anything greater than 30% will cost me either Crit Damage, Power, or Vitality — or all three.

Someone else can post the numbers but in my experience, 30% is the right amount.

Q: Does a year of LS fulfill an expansion?

in Living World

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

(TL/DR)
1. After playing through a year’s worth of LS updates, do you still feel like you want an expansion?

The common misconception about an expansion is that liken to a mythical creature. It’s always far better than LS.

The fact is, expansion isn’t that great. I’ve played other MMOs and paid the expansion ranging from $30-$40 (retail) and what do I get? Places and quests to get to the next max level, then nothing — because 50% of the content is locked into a Raid Dungeon — which I have no time nor patience to do.

So to answer the question, no, they both have the same amount of content for me but the expac costs me money while LS doesn’t.

2. Does the sum of last year’s worth of LS updates feel like the equivalent of an expansion?

Not really. LS is nothing but a X.1, X.2, etc kind of update. When I purchase Mist of Pandaria, for example, the Siege of Orgrimmar did not exists until Patch 5.4 — that’s like 4-LSs.

So if we are to sum the LS for the last year, that’ll be equivalent to 5.19 — that’s right, that’s 19 updates for the course of a year — MoP is still at 5.4 while 7million players are paying them $15/month. Doesn’t makes sense huh?

3. If no. 2 is yes: What features are missing from the LS updates that would make it feel more like a proper expansion?

Nothing, because Anet calls the Living Story a Downloadable Content (DLC) — so it’s never going to be like an expansion. But even then, the GW2 client have expanded to add more features that are often overlooked.

IMO, I don’t care much about LS, but I appreciate other things like the WXP, the wallet, account bound items, etc.

Potent Poison (Trait)

Read it again, the world “reflect” clearly indicates that it’s a tooltip update. Anet aren’t always consistent with their patch notes, they have updated tooltips without specifically saying the word tooltip a dozen times before.

That doesn’t make any sense. It states;

“Updated the thief skills that caused poison to reflect the extended duration…”

Compare to;

“Cluster Bomb: The bleeding skill fact now displays…”
“Fire Cluster Bomb: Added skill facts to describe…”

And this is not about the Potent Poison alone — now I wonder what other skills and traits that doesn’t work properly.

o man, then the Mesmer will be in here whining “not fair”

If you change your weapons to Sword/Pistol, you can immobilize your target with Skill #2 so that when your Rock Dog attacks, it will hurt. Also with S/P, you can use the mini-hundred blades (skill #3).

This way, you are participating in the fight by serving them in a silver platter for your pets.

EDIT: On additional note, if you are going to change to S/P, I’d suggest that you also change Shadow Step with Scorpion Wire. The more you can control the movement of your opponent, the more damage they will receive from your pets.

Whether they buff or nerf P/P I will still use it because there’s no other ranged weapon alternative.

No! Shortbow sucks IMO. I hate that weapon with a passion.

Difference is SB is a utility weapon and P/P is (supposed to be) a damage weapon.

Meh, SB could have been a damage weapon if not for the horrible attack speed of skill #1. Also the fact that they’ve remove the homing ability of skill #1 just killed this weapon for me. Now your target will simply strafe back and forth and you’ll never gonna hit them because your attack speed is slow and your arrow’s flight speed is also slow. Everything else is dodgeable.

They need to buff the arrow flight speed by 30% on oll the SB skills like they did to ranger and warrior bows

I just remembered, they nerfed the range of all the SB skills too. >.<’ This weapon received so much hate and we’re still waiting to get compensated.

In GW1, the E/A Burst build is viable only in one PvP format, that is Fort Aspenwood on Luxon side. I used to take out the 3 Kurzicks Guards in one swoop.

In GW2, I am yet to see an Elementalist take out a “heavy” as fast as a Thief.

It’s D/D ele instead of fresh air S/D. Maybe it’s not quite as fast as a thief (in some cases) but it is all AoE burst, so really 2 or 3 grouped targets can be taken down in about the same time frame as a glass thief, plus protection, stuns, knockdowns, blowouts, firefields, burning, bleeding, and immobilizes. Thief may eek out a win in terms of single target, but compare the overall utility of the 2.

If that is the claim then I would not have objected, but the cowpie claim is that Elementalist can burst someone faster than the Thief. Who cares about AoE and utilities, that was not the cowpie claim.

A variety of bursts with pretty big numbers (for sPvP).

Doesn’t prove that it can burst faster than the Thief especially against a medium armor stationary target.

(Suggestion) Headshot on Interrupt

in Thief

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

Let me make it simple: Interrupts comes in different shapes and forms.

And to make my point clear: I’M saying the examples you presented are ether not “interrupts”, or bad/very-circumstantial ones.

I wouldn’t fully or necessarily agree with him, but I wouldn’t be suprised if Jumper classified headshot in the latter category.

Choking Gas (GW1) is not an interrupt? O.o?

Headshot IS a “bad/very-circumstantial” skill. It’s a knock-off of GW1 Choking Gas with ridiculously short duration.

The lingering effect of Choking Gas (GW1) is way better than Daze from Headshot.

And yes I agree that Jumper wants the latter category, but as I have already posted above, Headshot is nothing like Savage Shot. Savage Shot interrupts on hit, while Headshot doesn’t — the Daze condition on Headshot is what interrupt the skills.

(Suggestion) Headshot on Interrupt

in Thief

Posted by: Sir Vincent III.1286

Sir Vincent III.1286

For example, if you ever played Magic: the Gathering, even though I have an instant card that can interrupt a spell, I can take my time to consider all my options which is proof that interrupts doesn’t have to require a quick reflexes.

First, a turn-based card game is a whole different beast than an action rpg. As an aside, it also has great counter-play as well since the person potentially playing a spell card will see the ample amount of reserve mana not being played on your previous turn. This is why instant cards are designed around that turn-based mechanic, not really because they are “interrupts”.

Not even close to what I’m talking about.

In GW1, Choking Gas also serves as an interrupt that doesn’t require quick reflexes or for you to be a better player.

Second, no ranger used this preparation to any serious extent in GW1 because it was too situational. This was considered one of the highlight builds. Instead they relied heavily on Savage Shot and Distracting Shot for their interrupts. These skills were more valuable in a teamfight and required the player to actually use skill in order to time them correctly. Even the condition spread of apply poison required skill, since it required the R/Mo to constantly be switching targets. This activity might draw the attention away from important skills to interrupt, or a bad R/Mo might just sit on one person the entire time not really doing anything else effectively. If they chose to bring Debilitating Shot as an optional skill, it required skill because most casters “hid” their mana bars by sitting in low mana sets. Thus, to get the most effectiveness out of Debilitating shot, a Ranger had to use it when the caster was actually casting something since the caster would be in his casting set exposing his mana pool. Also, on touch skills like mending touch were very shut-down worthy because of the gigantic tell that they offered. This means R/Mo’s, and other classes that had touch skills, had to be careful how they used them. (THAT was good game design, and some of the reasons why I loved the R/Mo so much in that game).

Again, that’s not what I’m talking about.

Let me make it simple: Interrupts comes in different shapes and forms.

While Jumper may like the Savage Shot type of interrupt, there are others who likes the Choking Gas type. Headshot is a little bit of both, which is unfortunate.
