The ‘data’ isn’t really what I am worried the most about. That is backed up to another machine and to the cloud, it’s the time and frustration of getting it all setup again. Norton supposedly is backing up my install image to another drive, but I don’t really trust that either.

I have been using computers for decades and other than one of my first ones where I literally shook the case WHILE it was running, I have never had a hard drive fail (knock, knock, knock). My drives spin 24/7 for years on end.

The OS is constantly writing information to the drive and moving it around so I only trust an SSD for things like games which is mostly static data.

I am running my work VM (Virtual machine) on an SSD, but that is only 100G that I back up a few times a year. If that fails, I get paid to repair/rebuild it, but probably a few month old backup wouldn’t be to big a hassle to update as all of our code is in a library I can download from.

Use raid then if you are worrying about this and that =,=

If communities are as united and organised as they claim to be, there will be little to no chaos. The only chaos comes from the casuals that think that they are part of the communities but never try to be connected with the communities.

He did not saying they are making OS a multi instance map. He said this problem can occur in more instances, as in occur more times in NON OS maps.

You are right, he said there maybe one more bug instance occurring on non-OS map. This somehow imply that OS is being tested for multi instance capability. This was actually highlighted by other players ingame, not me. In a way, it does make sense, why OS is not affected when it too is a single instance.

Unfortunately, a lot of games are still using outdated technology (programming) that heavily dependent on single core performance. BF1 is one of the newer titles that attempt to take advantage of multicores as much as possible (optimized programming) but if you compare it to titles that doesn’t do that (threw all kind of junks into the cpu), amd has a huge disadvantage there. Gamer wise, you will always want a system that can play all kind of games.

Anet obviously does not care about population balance. I will continue to recommend pvp focus mmo players not to play gw2.

I disagree. Anet cares. Its just that they don’t do much about it. They leave it up to the players to balance themselves out and we’ve shown that we are awful at doing that.

So, we’re left with players that won’t do anything and a company that isn’t putting in effort beyond some band-aids. This population disparity will be the death of the game mode (even more than the massive skill imbalances).

You are wrong. Developers have the responsibility to create a system that direct the balancing and in this case, anet fails to create such a system. Players follow the flow of the systems and the systems have shown to fail to do any forms of balancing. Gw2 generally still a PvE game as far as anet’s effort has shown.

Someone else suffers from dropping FPS on WvW?, I have an I7 4790, GTX 1070, 8GB, when I’m playing Pve and PvP I have no problem, I can put all the graphics in Maximo that is above 60 FPS without problems, but when I enter WvW the difference is gigantic, especially when it is close to the fights, when there are fights, you can give as dead, I need to put everything in the minimum to have an acceptable FPS rate of FPS above 30FPS, without speaking on the internet, The ping is very high.

Gw2 is cpu intensive and also it doesn’t use all available cores, a lot of data are pretty much queued at the cpu side.
If you are running 1440p and lower, your gpu is just fine, it can easily run max graphics at all properly optimized games.

You might want to upgrade to a better CPU but you already have the one of top single core performance CPUs so…..your next option will be to overclock it.

There isn’t really much other than that since you already tried reducing the graphics which is a correct decision.

Gw2 is generally poorly optimized, the performance issue is clearly obvious for large scale activities.

Edit: While I did say you don’t have to upgrade your cpu, you can still upgrade your cpu for a 30% performance increase (10-15% per generation, you are 3 gen behind). You will get about 10 fps increase.

If you’re gunning for a battlegroup or alliance system, just say so. Then I know better than to try and get details out of you. There’s a reason Anet decided against doing those—they work out great for the big guilds, but are much worse for pugs and most small guilds. Since most of their WvW players fall into the latter group, it makes no sense to switch.

As for mitigation, Skirmishes are an example of an update that aimed to reduce the effects of population imbalance. They didn’t solve the whole thing, but they did make a tangible difference.

No, I am not talking about battlegroup but regardless, those are one of the suggestions.

So that’s what you mean by mitigation but I see that as score balancing and score balancing doesn’t improve gameplay, gameplay is what keeps players playing.

Devs too had thought of blowing it all up initially but fear of backlash stops them from doing it, adapting a different approach but those approaches have proven to be ineffective.

I posted a lot of suggestions but all suggestions require one thing, a complete reset of WvW because it is simply impossible to work with what we have now.

I will repost the same suggestions I have made in the past, other than battlegroup, devs can set up new automate rules to govern WvW which devs already thought of having but didn’t go into details of it since they didn’t chose the blow up approach.

First, cutting down the number of servers by half. Logic behind it is simple, we don’t have population to fill that many servers.

Second, dynamic cap instead of fixed cap. This will inherently solve any population imbalance between servers and easily adapt to explosive population due to events or when game shrinks. The dynamic cap simply take reference from servers and make sure each servers gap in population is not too wide, if it is too wide, you close off the top populated server until that gap is lessen.

Third, servers no longer mandatory, the word itself is misleading due to the existence of megaserver. Choosing server at start too is meaningless due to megaserver. World should rename to a term that people can relate to like fraction or legion. The benefit of not making servers mandatory is to gain better idea of the wvw pop because there are a lot of people that never ever step into wvw. Even if there are people that use wvw for banks or merchant, we can still use it to determine potential pop and use that as a reference to determine server pop. Another benefit to this is guilds get to recruit easily and new players get to join any guilds (they enjoyed) of any fraction before stepping into it.

Fourth, purge inactive accounts. Players do go inactive so we do need to purge those accounts every so often, removing them from the fractions. A month will be too fast, half a year would be too long, 3 months sounds alright. The main idea is to prevent potential populations to explode due to returning players. Also, usually we don’t calculate inactive accounts into wvw pop, then why keep inactive accounts in the server then? Some people may argue it hurts anet wallet but honestly speaking, business talks about retaining customers as well. Players that returns to game will found out that they have to pay gems to switch server to join their new friends, they will be disappointed. But if players found out that they can choose new server as long it isn’t full after returning to the game, I am sure they will be happy and if they play long enough, they may buy and spend gems for other things. Also, I never understand why people like to talk like they work for anet, anet earns or not is not our concern, our concern is to make sure the game is fun.

Fifth. This suggestion actually is costly for game dev to adapt but is still suggestion. We can log player’s play time and therefore their time slice. We can then adapt time slice into transfer system such that if that server require people for a specific time slice, the players that tagged with that time slice will be allow to transfer there, even for free. But, if the time slice is packed then players tagged for that will be prohibited from joining. Initially, everyone will not have time slice thus the normal pop cap will kicks in. This time slice is suppose to be built over a period time, to restrict players transfer, preventing players to overstack a server. Likewise, will need a separate datalog for time slice pop.

Ok, that’s a real problem, now let’s see you try and fix it.

Blowing everything up isn’t going to solve anything. Even if you make the servers even now, that potential population will still be lurking. Even if you force people who return in the future to disperse evenly, people playing now will quit/return and the cycle will begin anew.

It’s not a solvable problem. The only hope is to mitigate it.

When we blow something up, of course we not gonna remake the same system again, that’s a stupid thing to do.

Blowing up and devise a system of rules to handle the issues you know will happen is much easier than trying to solve issues that already happened.

Also, since you are talking about mitigating it, can you share with us how are you gonna mitigate it with the current systems?

The WvW populations did increase with the new reward system but the fundamental population issue still doesn’t change. The WvW populations is still unbalance.

We now have numerous servers full but how many of those full servers are truly equal to each other? Many are not.

For those who are new to WvW or the game itself, server status is calculated purely for WvW and not server as a whole. That is to say as long the algorithm determine that the wvw population for that server reach a certain threshold, it will make it full. This threshold is a fixed value, exceeding it a bit or exceeding it by large makes no different for the system.

One major flaw in this whole design is that it exclude potential population. This potential population is base on how big the server actually is as everyone has to choose a server right at the start. This also include accounts that went inactive and then return to the game.

Many servers went full after patch, reaching that threshold but it doesn’t necessary means that every server has the same base population because the algorithm doesn’t determine that. We currently facing the issue that some full servers are noticeably bigger than other full servers. Not only that, servers with high base population can continue to thrive with their untapped populations while servers with low base population will have their life slowly drained away, those who remembered the old DH and DB full status issue, those are fine examples.

WvW devs cannot keep ignoring the fundamental population problem. WvW devs should just blow everything up if unable to find any solution for it.

HOD is full, sadly.

  • We don’t get more than 1 map queues everyday during EST prime like many other full servers.
  • We are outman during PST prime.
  • We are completely outman during OCX against SOS.
  • We are sometimes outman during SEA.
  • We do well in early EU.
  • We are sometimes outman during EU prime.

All in all, guilds looking for fights, HOD is the best place to be at. You don’t get fights by stacking. Join us in HOD when it opens!

Will ArenNet Ever Optimize This Game?

MMORPGs are generally programmed to run with at most 2 cores, simply because it is base on old technology and there have been little reasons to go beyond that since CPU maker has been making new processors that has better single core performance, in other words, it was expected that players themselves periodically upgrade their cpu with the best single core performance.

However, recent years, cpu maker like intel that makes the best single core performance cpu, made it public to game studios that single core performance improvement will be limited and devs should make plans for future games to truly support multicores. Some games recently, even MMOs, did optimize their engine to support multicores.

If anet intent to support gw2 for years to come, they should think about making it support multicores as gw2 is noticeably using more resources with some new contents.

Also, if they want to go multicore supports, they likely need to implement dx12 as the main thread that is so ever busy is the renderer thread and so happen that a lot of things in mmo (network data) need to synchronize with the rendering process.

It’s not loyality, it’s commitment, and yes it’s only 1 extra, but it’s 1 extra every 5 mins.

Loyality to ones server will not last. The stated reason for the change was so people who went on vacation weren’t punished as bad and that the wording / intent of the bonus was confusing….

We asked to be rewarded for loyalty to our servers and instead ended up with a bonus for continuing to play every week, that’s as good as it’s gonna get with this pip.

The problem is loyalty using the concept of the time you stayed in a server as a unit of measure is bad because there are people who have been in the server for a long time but it doesn’t mean they are doing wvw for that time. Thus, anet decided to use participation as unit of measure.

However, how impactful is this unit of measure when one week is all you need to gain that one pip? It is pretty meaningless and pointless. However, if you can accumulate additional pips over weeks, it become really impactful. Of course, to account for the lesser time required due to additional pips, one can increase the requirements for additional pips by higher tier chest.

well, i have near to 30k ap (i stopped doing much ap for a long long time already)
i ahve many ascended

still, despite how end game i am at, i am aware that there are people that plays for reward and the fact that wvw population is still low in some servers.

thus, we need to work on what we have and maintain what we have and gained

Can we accumulate this to a certain max value that anet deem fit?

Basically, for every concurrent week you play, reaching a specific chest (though I think the current wooden chest is kinda low), you will gain additional loyalty pip (maybe can have a separate additional pip requirement, differ from the requirement to maintain the current pip). Then, for every week you didn’t reach the requirements, the loyalty pip will decrement by one.

As for why, this has better long term benefit and befitting of the word “loyalty”
players will be made aware that they will lose the loyalty they gained after many weeks of work they put it, then maybe leading to mentality of wanting to keep those pip thus putting in minimum hours into wvw.

Hi there,

I am/was a very dedicated player to this game previously, however i realized i really wanted/needed to get my partner into this game if i was to keep playing. However it did not manage to hold her interest, and while this is her personal experience, i think it does represent a group of casual/casual gamers that might have similar experiences that result in them falling short of getting into this game.

Pro’s

She liked the character customization.
She liked the various activities revolving around the ‘hearts’/events on the map.
She thought the monster/map variation was great.

— longer analysis: It’s hard to explain what makes a great storyline for the game, and i don’t doubt there are moments in gw2 where the story does become very interesting, but at the start it does seem a bit bland. Especially, say it’s over 3-4 days of lvling to reach the next story chapter because she has been busy with rl, she has suddenly forgotten all about the story.

Having said that, she did reach lvl 40, but by then i think the enjoyment she was getting out of doing the ‘heart’ events to lvl up was diminishing fast and becoming a bit tedious.

I know it’s hard for more dedicated players to imagine her position from a ‘blank state,’ but it does seem gw2 revolves around end-game content, and when we make alts we know in the long term the fun activities we will be using them for, but for new players like my gf she obviously cant get excited to grind through the bland beginning for end game content she has no experience of and therefore no excitement for.

Tl:DR – I guess the major issue is: what’s different from lvl 1-39 that grows the new player’s attachment from the game from lvl 40-79?

If this question had a great answer i think more players could be drawn to this game.

I never consider story as a very important part of the game, it is afterall a mmorpg. If people want story rich game, single player rpg is the best place to get those. You should explain to her that this is mmo and mmo is about the people you playing with, not about the story.

Also, comparing to all the mmos I have played, gw2 is casual. One can reach 80 easily within a week or two while hardcore players will reach it within a few days. One can get full ascended gears within two or three months while hardcore players will get it within a month. Exotic can be gotten easily within a week or two while hardcores will take a few days. If your gf can’t handle the leveling rate, I guess your gf is not suitable for a casual mmorpg. I guess she’s the FPS type of player that want to jump into actions immediately.

It was hard until people got used to the patterns aka mechanism which is still patterns anyway. The only time when people consider it as hard was during the initial phase where people have to use pen and papers to write down the patterns while figuring out the best strategy to go about it (which is actually just dps strategy like all pve contents). Once all of that is done, it is just optimizing the strategy and we have today so-called easy raid. However, if people do not share all those strategies, I wonder how many would consider it easy.

On topic, op is saying there are quite a few mag players that somehow manage to exploit some forms of glitch that cause players to be stuck in some spot.

I don’t know if is intentional or unintentional but pulls do have some side effects like making the person fly up in the air and drop down, it is weird.

Because anet has no idea what to do to really make wvw relevant.

World buffs were there as a “reason” for people to play for their server even though it is a pretty insignificant “reason” to begin with. Pretty sure they took the idea from some pvp mmorpgs but left out the significant parts of it.

I gurantee you that had June 6th rolled around, and the rank requirement been originally set at 1k or 1.5k, the few of you praising the 2k rank requirement wouldn’t have lifted a single finger to argue that it should be higher.

How sure are you that people won’t argue for 500 rank then?

Oh one can never be sure but I think a rank req of at least 1000 is a better requirement because:

  • It’s a rank milestone, you unlock every possible wvw rank “mastery” at rank 1000.
  • It is not a simple task; someone can not come in and grind for a month or two and hit rank 1000.
  • It would be more inclusive of the core of majority of players that regularly play wvwand have kept the game mode alive since so many of them are close to or above rank 1000.

So essentially rank 1000 req does everything the rank 2000 req does. It prevents new or casual players from receiving handouts while also expanding the amount of people to include more players who deserve the reward. Unfortunately roamers/havoc still get stiffed but there really isn’t much that can be done at that point since lowering the req to 500 may be too low.

If you can’t be sure then why make that comment?

because rank 1k is reasonable. while rank 2k is really unreasonable for many reasons listed above.

That is not answering the question. That statement is made on the presumption that people have prior knowledge that it was 2k and thus using 2k as reference to demand it to lower to 1k. Then, using alternative timeline to argue that if it is 1k, people will not complain. Anyway, using alternative timeline for argument is silly in the first place. To use alternative timeline to argue things is also good to say that one already run out of sensible arguments.

Why Dire (And TB) is Not the issue.

Dire isn’t strong, tb is.

My condi necro in all exotic dire gear begs to differ. I literally smash buttons on cooldown and win fights that I clearly should not be winning.

That has nothing to do with dire. Dire exist since 4 years ago, it is the boost to conditions through the balance that makes you win easily, absolutely nothing to do with dire. Then again, even before hot, a necro could melt people easily with condition on roaming but it was nerfed after that.

It has everything to do with Dire/TB. In WvW condi builds are the tankiest offensive builds available. In sPvP condi builds are squishier than their power counter parts for every class except Mesmer. Why is there such a difference between the modes? Hint: gear stats.

As pointed out your post a contradiction. Dire armor does little to create a tanky build against another condition build. The more condition builds there are the less tanky the build becomes in relative terms.

What COUNTERS condition builds is not toughness or adding toughness. If you want to counter a condition build you trait cleanse , vitality and healing from a defensive perspective, or try and pump out more damage over a shorter period of time.

That said If a person does sacrifice toughness so as to battle a DIRE user with those other stats , then he in turn becomes more vulnerable to power builds.

A necro condition build in carrion facing a Necro condition build in Dire is just as tanky given the added toughness the Necro in dire has does little to protect against condition damage. There certainly less raw damage taken due to that dire but that more then made up for by the added power of the necro in Carrion. There no practical reason in such a fight that Necro in Dire should outlast the one in carrion.

You do know that Dire has secondary stat vitality and that the only harder counter to such a build would be a nomad’s full-tank, right?

You do also know that vitality counters power damage efficacy, right?

You do realize your entire argument here is based on condi vs condi, while Dire is the hardest-countering set to power builds out there due to its damage:EHP ratio, right?

The argument for comparison would be more consistent for Carrion vs Valkyrie, not Dire.

And there is very good reason to suspect that Dire would outlast carrion in a fight; Dire ticks for more damage from utility consumables which scale both toughness and vitality into condition damage, and the power component of carrion would be substantially negated into rough equality hit-for-hit due to carrion’s lack of toughness not inhibiting the damage of no-power dire.

Which of course, depending on the profession, gets even more favorable for dire the more might which is stacked, given how %-wise, the efficiency favors higher toughness to higher base power.

Mathematically, Dire is and has been a problematic stat distribution since its inception. The only thing holding it back was the lower damage/burst throughput of condition builds early on. Even still, stat-for-stat, it’s always had the best efficiency in every way compared to other options, TB aside (although even some will argue Dire is still better than TB due to its higher tick damage and base HP).

But gears were initially balance in that manner, having comparable total stats points then further balancing it via skills / traits balancing. Yet, hot bought in a lot of new variables and this literally bring balancing to a whole new level of difficulties. Basically, anet dug their own grave.
