I never said that. Some people think running around with the Endless Cat Tonic is fun. Some people think getting 15 legendaries is fun. But it’s not going to help you win! GvG only wins in an egotistic-vanity sense. WvW is where the true players support their server. These are facts of life, I didn’t come up with the facts.
Thats the point. For those 1-2 hours the guilds doing GvG just dont care about winning or losing the matchup. They want to improve their skills.

Assuming those numbers were true (they are from the first 4 months of the game), those are simply sold copies you are mentioning. Sold copies != active WvW accounts. Get this fact into your head now. Please. You were ignoring it the past few days in every single thread and arument.

Now that we have this sorted you can rethink about your example.
Yes GvG population is less than 1% of the games copies.
But if you think about it, players got less, not more. If the playerbase would have been constant or would have gotten more, your server wouldnt have to play the politics game and recruit even EU guilds.
So we end up with this simple fact: there ARENT 2.5 mil active accounts left.
Hell I would even say there is barely 1 mil active accounts left. Active means for me more than doing a daily once a week. Now, considering how few people play WvW regulary compared to PvE.
WvW does certainly not have a 6 digit player base. Unless there are 5h queues on T1/T2 servers 24/7.
From my perspective the active WvW population of this game is somewhere at the lower end of 5 digit numbers. But again, thats only my speculation. With this more realistic approach:

BUT: GvG players still do WvW most of the time and bring you your precious points.
So why are you hating on the people who do zerg busting for you and capture objectives all week long? Is it because you fear for your ppt game? When was the last time you had actually fun in WvW by killing somebody? I feel like this is arguing with someone who only knows one side of the fence. Only looks to the other side to see that they also can have fun. And as soon as the other side asks Anet not to flood their playground(by adding +stats with some kind of orb mechanic), he starts to spit on the other side.
I can tell you that almost nobody below T1 does give a fork about GvGs happening on some BL. Because either they grew up and realised that there are different ways to have fun or are part of a guild that GvGs from time to time.
You are saying you run with 20-30 man group*s* in WvW all the time? I dont believe that for a second. Your server wouldnt be up there if you had multiple groups splitting from the blob.
Personally, I think A-Net is finally applying their ranking system correctly by juggling the matchups around a bit. It keeps it from being stale, even if there are frustrating matchups at times.

Not even. He is including the sold copies and trying to subtract the active accounts.
Given the fact that at least 90% of those “active” accounts just do a daily or monthly and nothing else (*) you end up with much, much less than the millions of WvW players he is using as reference to show how small the GvG-supporting community is.

And even this data is from a website that is trying to promote the game. God knows how they count those 2.5 million “active” accounts. And those numbers are pretty old by now.
12minutes playtime per day doesnt sound like a usual WvW player to me. Those have a lot more.
Even if we win every match “GvG” is still a problem because it kills competition or at least they try to. Even in this thread you have these "GvG"ers talking down to people actually playing the game when they are 0.333333333% of the games population less than 1%.

There was some blog or something with active players and average playtime per day was something like 30 minutes. Saw it on reddit or so a few weeks ago. I would look it up for you if you would stop bringing this 1% “argument” after see the player statistics, but I guess it wont happen.

I remember it was working for me and my guildies a few weeks back. Now its broken again.
Maybe it was only working for a signle evening. I dont know because people got used to “leave party before you go offline” by now and I wasnt playing much since then.
EU vs America would be interesting if every server had steady coverage all day long. For example you could match the Vizunah and some T1 or T2 US servers.
BUT everybody else doesnt have that. EU servers dont have 24/7 coverage. They have peaks in the evenings and next to nobody a few hours later. Matchung EU vs US would mean that for EU primetime the maps will be painted with EU, at US primetime they will be painted US-colours. And you would end up plaing vs gates and guards instead of players.
The loyalty that can be built up by community managers and developers in a game is a hugely powerful tool and has kept people playing games for a very long time indeed. If Anet or more specifically Devon was able to understand this and garner the support required then when the next fluffy game comes out that supports (I use this word lightly, it simply means “includes”) world PvP like GW2 then you can bet that a lot of people would put this kind of invaluable developmental support at the forefront of their minds and possibly play something else for a little while but always return to GW2, currently this kind of loyalty isnt a prolific feeling amongst many of the WvW community and as such the only thing to keep people coming back is the fact the game is B2P – not because of loyalty to the company, the people or the game.
I totally agree on that. Binding people to your game was surely easier a few years ago because the F2P model wasnt a big thing. But its still possible.
However ArenaNET realised this in their PvE department and reacted to feedback slowly, but accordingly and look at the progress they made there. The Living Story content is well made, regular and free. Interesting story behind every event keeps people interested in what happens next. The fact they distribute weapon skins on RNG is bad, but I’ll give them that because they need money.
Now compare it to the PvP/WvW progress and you’ll realise that to build a trustful relationship to this community is plainly impossible within the time left until the next big MMO. At least at the rate of progress we had in the past.
They would need to put 5 times the manpower into WvW and they would need to do it right now. Otherwise Wildstar (or whatever game is next) will come out before the developers learn the ropes of this gamemode(s).
Lets be real here, one year of getting declined…people want a whole lot to happen by now. Not only something random like colour changes, siege weapon masterys or traps. ANet needs to catch up on the needs from the past year and put a cherry on top now. Otherwise I dont see a bright future for WvW.
And its not really Devons fault. Ofc he could give a lot more insight in the stuff they are doing/thinking. But 1st he probably isn’t allowed to and 2nd it would reveal how much(or little) power they have within the company. His latest respones about WvW being only one small piece of the game, made clear that he is fed up with the situation he is in. He cant promise anything big because his team cant realise it.
I can imagine that the WvW team is thinking of amazing things and has good ideas how to fix stuff and make the game better as a whole. Sadly they dont have the manpower to realise any of this. And probalby dont get the manpower scheduled by managers because Living Story weapon skins are the $$$ these days.

So, in regards to GvG and openfield, I don’t see a lot of “rampant speculation” going on. If nothing else, you chose your words poorly. The complaints about this new system potentially killing the GvG scene is entirely grounded.
This forum and this topic in particular are about WvW. WvW is about sieging and controlling objectives and about open field combat. All our changes are with that totality in mind and will continue to be.
I am exceptionally disappointed to see how narrow-minded and ignorant a developer can become. Rather than supporting an emergent game-play style you respond to this topic with what must be one of the worst possible responses I have seen from you yet.
Let me correct you on your glaringly obvious mistake and possibly educate you in the way you require. World vs World is what the players want it to be, not what it may have been designed for, not what you believe it to be, not what you scream from the top of your lungs what you wish it to be… it is what PLAYERS want it to be. If players didn’t want there to be GvG then guess what? There wouldn’t be GvG but there is a large scene for it now and to what must be your utter disbelief – huge swathes of servers actually have pride in the guilds that represent them in both WvW and GvG.
If you understood the above and actually realised that we, the players who focus on World vs World and want to actually fight other players (not bunker inside keeps), are not happy at all with the way we have been dealt with for quite some time then you may actually begin to build bridges, however with the above statement it is quite obvious that you are oblivious to much of what is occurring in the world of World vs World at the moment (Oh I’m sure you can read your metrics, well done).
You may also wish to understand that with the lack of any direct competition with other games at the moment GW2 does hold dominance in this area but that is not through great support for the WvW community, it is because as I said, there is a dire lack of competition and I can assure you that once said competition comes out you may wish to hold onto your seat because I can assure you that your community will shrink and quite drastically.
I have kept off the forum for quite some time, ever since your complete disaster of implementing Arrowcart changes and so on but I simply couldn’t help myself in responding to this reply. Hopefully you will see the light – I wont hold my breath however.

TBH I think even if we would get the changes we ask for, a lot of people would leave as soon as competition is out. Just because their friends who arent interested in WvW are moving, they want a different kind of lore/new world to explore or just always play the newest game.

Compared to a few months ago they definitely have increased rewards for WvW players, but it does indeed still pale to PvE content.
Because its basicly a sea of white, blue and green stuff. Just like most of the PvE zones. Except PvE has Orr (filled with strong mobs and events) and the world events with at least a rare per day.
I like the ammount of money I get. Its okay if you arent building towards a legendary or somthing. Otherwise you have to play the trading post in addition to WvW.

Something this game truly needs since 1 year after release you still cant tell how much damage your skills will do.
That would make a lot of sense if other classes couldn’t do the same amount of damage or more, WITH ONE ABILITY.
Tell me a single other profession that can do over 9k damage at nearly instant speed. Your opponents can’t even react to that burst, and elementalists still have updraft, still have the entire fire traitline, can still heal and remove conditions on themselves and allies on water, and still switch back to earth for aoe protection.
Elementalists are generally really strong in pvp. The only exception is in the current meta, because most ele’s party support and self defense abilities do not work versus conditions, and because their bunker anti-condition setups are countered by s/d thieves. Once the condition meta is nerfed, eles will get back to play.
How about a Thief backstabbing from stealth, 9k ezpz. Rifle Warriors. Melee rangers. Some pervert shatter Mesmers using Mind Wrack and Cry of Frustration at the same time.
See, Eles have to do so much smashing buttons for a good combo while Thiefs, Warriors and Rangers only have to press 1 skill. And I think every class should have to do some work to make a fluent, working combo deal good damage.
I dont know what kinds of players you face but even in WvW, where the vast majority of players is considered as “scrubs” by sPvPers, when I LF+Stun them, they use a stunbreaker and dodge to gain some distance. Maybe pop their invunability (if they have some) and heal up before reengaging or running away.
Can you do 20v20 in sPvP? No? Enough said.

I’d personally say: smaller groups -> worse balance.
Seriously, the class balance in this game from a competetive view is really, really bad (condition dmg for example lol). So people found out that using the direct combat system and the already in-game COMBO system is a lot of fun AND evens out the playing field on the balance front for a bit. The thing is, you need more people for that.
8v8 is the weirdest number you could ask for(except if you really want highlander mode). Not even the combo system could get used to its full potential.
So why not use the things that make the game fun?

Shouldnt be setting up fights…should just be having these fights in open field.
Groups/guilds are far more likely to run away in an instantaneous open field fight so they can get the upper-hand… which completely negates any level playing field which a structured GvG standard tries to implement.

They didt a server tour where they visited (almost?) every server for an evening. On AG they didnt really cooperate, came the last evening before reset on EB while we had a boring matchup = no PUG commander on the map, no guild raids. Basicly they threw some siege around and people who were curious were following them for a few hours. Was an unfortunate timing for that, but I doubt there was more cooperation on other servers tbh.

There, two months of “work”. 3/4 of the content was adding stuff via a fresh, newly created framework (=people know how it works, no need to spend time to figure the framework out). Since devs almost never admit failure on their part people expect a lot more than this.
I’d argue that the game polishing stuff (wallet, AoE loot etc.) made WvW players more happy than this.

I would really like to have a more peaceful atmosphere.
But with nothing WvW related happening at all for the first 5 months after the release (except removing orbs), and this really unpolished stuff in the game people dont really want Supply-Mastery or another +stat buff.
People want what they have asked for for 10 months now:
- better commander system (or guild commanders)
- fix to the party system
- deminishing returns for giant zergs
Maybe finally fixing all the weapon tooltips in the game. Because they are wrong, are missing details and show some weird dmg number that doesnt indicate anything at all.
But Anets WvW team has to play the catchup game. Bringing out content for PvE every 2 weeks while progressing so slowly in WvW doesnt help either for the atmosphere.
It simply feels like nobody did comment anything of the code while writing it pre-release and now different people have to service it.
Why do you always think dates are the most important thing? Details would be nice. At least some.
Knowing if you put something new there or just make it a simple flat surface? Stuff like that could be interesting. Not the release dates.
And, while it isn’t an entirely new map, you can look forward to some changes to the borderlands soon. Let’s just say you should get your krait killing in now.

Me as a WvW player (and i suppose that most of the WvW would support me) I’m fed up.
Everytime we have a patch we already know that the WvW content will be…almost inexistent.
In addittion every patch we know also that the following days you will down WvW so you can fix your mistakes on the previous patch.
We know that we’re just getting ignored about some basic features like account Wxp ranks, group buff priorities, GvG system, etc…The funny thing is that we can all live with theese things until you screw us in a way that makes WvW unplayable for organiced groups.
Next time if something goes wrong (like it happened with this new effect feature that nobody cared about btw) just roll back to the previous version inmediately or test it harder before it goes live.

oh now u guys talk like that , now that u all can stack it huh? thats what we told u guys to begin with. dont spam buttons, but u kept crying and now that u have it too next to hundreds of skills we dont have u tell us the same thing! of course u dont kitten spam! we got nerfed soo kitten hard in terms of confusion that stacking was made neary impossible and now 1 kitten rune manges what we were never able to do, while we though gave EVERYTHING else up for viable stacks like that.!

As a Mesmer myself I can say that the confusion nerf was needed. The galmour builds are still strong in certain moments. But they are (and always were) boring to me.

Had quite fun today. Hopped from ele to the mighty [TUP] mesmer blob (a guildie had the same idea so we were even 3 mesmers tonight O.O). Had some ok action here and ther. Would have been better if we could use any skills but ok.

I admit we had 2 or 3 HoB guys on our voicecom. But we ran seperatly for ages. Ofc people always ball up if they want to take a keep against 3-5 ACs at every gate.
We wiped many times too, but unlike you we dont leave a BL when we lose a Keep.
Have to say, UW we are impressed. This never ending fights, this fighting spirit, its great. I hope you can keep it up all week with this constant action. Much love. <3

Well, you are definetly thinking of a different Anet than I do. Because I can say almost certainly that Anets developers dont even have GvG on the horizon of their schedule. Maybe there are some concepts of a few content designers who were really motivated and did some extra hours, but thats it.
Cant sell weapon skins trough the gem store off that.
You also have this awesome greatsword you can drop from the sky and use to spin/dash away with. I noticed you forgot to mention that.
If you’re just turning tail and running you’re doing it wrong. Eles also have multiple ways to CC people trying to chase/hurt them. Use them.

Yes, I am kitten at running away. Most of the time I stay and kill stuff or accept my own death. But my point still stands, other classes have more mobility, but nobody talks about it. Its always Eles or Thiefs.
Never a Necro with perma Conditions and dealing 2k of dmg per tick or the fact that Guards are the backbone of every group play and wihout its not possible to get anywhere.

Sorry what? I cant remember the last time I could get away from someone as ele. Lighting Flash and RTL might be nice and stuff. But any thief just catches up 3 seconds later. And sadly 90% of roaming WvW population are thiefs. I always ask myself if I missed some skills besides RTL, Lighting Flash and mabye Fire 3 to make some distance. Because I dont see a Thief, melee Ranger or a Sword/Horn Warrior lose to Ele any day. And nobody is talking about mobility of those classes.
Running away from stuff like Necros and Guardians doesnt count.
But if you combine something like a Ranger (or really a “Closer”, melee version) with the Norn skills it gets quite funny.
