I have a lot of experience with Wine and Crossover and other wrappers for running Windows apps, and I think GW2’s Cider wrapper is of remarkable quality. I’m thankful they have an officially-supported option for us Mac users so we don’t have to reboot every time we want to play, and we as a community don’t have to deal with configuration headaches and figuring it out on our own.
I agree. I don’t mind sacrificing some system resources to avoid having to boot in to Boot Camp every time I want to play.
Im hoping for non-gem town clothes to be earnable in some way (well, apart from event town clothes like the free witch hat etc).
These would need to be very rare drops. The game does require a constant revenue to continue running. If everything is easily available in game, nobody would spend RL money on gems and that would stifle the only constant source of revenue. (The initial $60 is a finite cash burst and can not be counted as dependable source of revenue)

Yes. OS X is not distributable. It is $19.99 per machine it is installed on. Just go in to the Mac App Store and ML is listed under “Apple Apps” on the right side menu.
I’m still getting 35-42 fps in high stress areas (PvP, busy city areas, WvW) on my 13" mbp which is adequate for my play style.

How come you didn’t just purchase it from the Mac App Store and install it from there as intended?
Sounds like you’ve downloaded a torrent version of ML which there is no support for as you’ve obtained an illegal copy of the OS. I apologize if I’m wrong. But, I’m not aware of another legal way of obtaining ML outside of purchasing it from the App Store which is why Snow Leopard is required to upgrade.
I have been playing for several hours today and logged off and back on many times between sessions but have not run in to the problem you both are experiencing. Perhaps list your system specs as it seems to be something specifically related to your system builds.

Agree with FlamingFoxx. Many (not all) the crashing errors do seem to be account or machine specific because many of us, myself included, are not experiencing them as frequently or at all.
I’ve got the same mbp (Unless you got the Retina model) and I am not experiencing the same things you are.
Haven’t run in to this error at all.. yet.
The beta runs pretty smooth on my Mac. So, for me, the beta is really about finding bugs that affect game play such as stuttering, object selection, etc.
As BombaAriba stated.. simply removing the “beta” label will not eliminate the poor performance you are experiencing. Post your system’s specs and perhaps there is something that can be figured out to help you get the same performance many of us are already getting.
I just don't bother using the trading post anymore..

While I’ll get the spinning circle of futility from time to time, it doesn’t happen to me very often. And, I notice that logging off/on, restarting, etc. doesn’t help which leads me to believe that the problem is probably on the BLTC end on not on my machine or game client.
I assume this because when I login with my PC I experience the same issue. If I try again at a later time it works fine, consistently.
While I’ll experience this problem once in a great while. Say, every 5 to 10 hours of game play.. it is not nearly as frequent as it was a couple of weeks ago when it happened to me every 5-10 minutes.
Yesterday, I didn’t experience a single disconnect at all during approximately 6 hours of game play.
Definitely reset the SMC as Wrath already suggested.
As for the tweaks, Anet already turned on the MTD3D= setting which was affecting many people with a recent patch. And, the other tweaks in the above mentioned thread are subjective depending on each person’s build. I personally haven’t seen a difference in performance after changing any of the values in the Config file besides the MTD3D=. On the other hand, I was getting pretty decent fps (25-30) on my 13" MBP before the patch as well.
Regardless, OP, if you plan to try some of the tweaks, don’t forget to make a back up of your Config file before you start playing with it.
I agree with HellsMachine. Past MMO’s rewarded people who raced to End Game. It has been imprinted in to the DNA of today’s MMO gamer.
There is no cure for this. You can’t teach somebody to have fun by trying new things. They have to stumble across the fun factor all on their own.
I hate to be “that guy” who tries to bring things constantly back in to perspective. But, is this really a priority fix that needs to be addressed?
Agreed it needs to be put on a “to do list” but I personally hope it is at the bottom.
Aren’t there 6 character slots? How is choosing a profession/race even an issue when you can play all of them and just play the combo you like best more often or exclusively?
It is these “free” games that end up costing more to play for some than they realize, most of the time too late for the parents CC. Sorry to unglamourize the world.
Well said.
I would rather spend $100 each month on a game that I enjoy than pay a subscription for a game that has a screwed up in game economy because it also has a F2P option (See: EQ2, SWtOR, etc.).
I entered GW2 knowing how that I would be spending money on the game regardless that it was subscription free. In fact, that was a primary draw to the game for me beyond all the great in game features.
Anybody who feels they have to spend RLM in order to enjoy a F2P game should probably consider a subscription based model instead. Especially if the economy bothers them.
It makes sense for it to be on a free market. Just beware when no one is buying with real money.
This. ^^
I buy gems with real money and convert them to gold. So, the market in its current state is to my advantage. However, in a Free Market, should people like me decide to stop purchasing gems with real money it could have quite a negative impact on the economy.
I craft for and equip all of my own characters. I keep all their equipment updated with the exception of drops which may be better than my crafted version.
To be fair though, I have dropped a healthy amount of RLM (via the Game, not 3rd party) on Gems, converting them to gold and buying mats off the trading post. So, those who aren’t spending any RLM, my situation may be different.
Can’t hurt to install the client and find out. Based on the specs, I can’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be able to unless you haven’t updated your OS X since 2009.
Question: Will there ever be a native OS X version?

Yeah, I have Windows 7 on bootcamp but the thing is who wants to buy a Mac to use Windows on it? My entire digital life is done within the Apple ecosystem. It’s a big pain in the kitten to use Windows for anything not to mention unpleasant.
I agree. However, GW2 is not unique to this situation. There are hundreds of games out there that do not have an OS X port or native client and require Windows to play.
Would it be convenient to have a native client? Sure. And who knows? Perhaps that will happen in the future. But, for now it is more convenient for me to use Cider wrapper than it is to boot in and out of a bootcamp partition.
In fact, until the Mac Beta client was introduced, GW2 was the only reason I still maintained a Windows 7 partition on my Mac. I quit SWtOR because they announced on the record that there would never be any sort of Mac support for their client. Ever. Not even a wrapper client such as we have here.
My point, which I believe was made earlier by somebody else is: How would you benefit from knowing ArenaNet’s plans for a native Mac client?
Would you quit immediately and not waste any further time with the game as I did with SWtOR. Or would you continue using the wrapper client or booting in to Windows? At least you have options right now. Where as other games do not offer an option to Mac owners.

WvW is virtually unplayable in this lame Cider client even on a super high powered Mac. It’s just really unacceptable.
I disagree.
While I too would love to see an OS X native client; I am not experiencing any problems during WvW or PvP on a base model 2012 MBP. The performance is the same as it was when I was using the PC client on a Windows 7 bootcamp partition.
Why I can't recommend GW2 to my Mac friends.

Yah. I have to ask the same question as Stonehead. Which Mac are you having issues with?
I’m on a 2012 13" MBP that doesn’t even have a dedicated video card and I am able to enjoy PvP and WvWW play just fine. So, perhaps its the age of your Mac, the OS X version, or something else that is causing your system to perform poorly.
Update: Over the past two days I’ve had uninterrupted play sessions. Nothing changed on my end. And, I don’t recall if I patched the latest update before or after the network disconnects stopped.
None the less. I’m not having any disconnect issues anymore fingers crossed

Yah. The issue is server side. Some people suspected their antivirus programs were to blame, but I have the same problem on a MacBook Pro with no AV. Didn’t start happening to me until I transferred my characters to a different server. But, I don’t think that has anything to do with it.
This happens to me frequently. I get an error eventually that the client has lost connection with the server. I doubt this is related to the Beta Mac Client. But, it has become more frequent since I started using it. I suspect a coincidence but its possible that the wrapper for the wifi drivers might have an issue.
I haven’t taken my mbp upstairs to try a wired connection to test the theory though.
It costs almost $60 to go to the movies (with company of course) when you include snacks and soda. That’s only 1.5 hours of entertainment.
I think $60, and no monthly subscription, has more than paid for itself.
Now, the additional $120 I’ve dumped in to the BLTP? That’s a different story.

I tested on a hackintosh using a GTX 570 as well as a 2012 iMac with Bootcamp. A 40% performance hit isn’t “small” or “slightly diminished”. That’s absolutely absurd.
There is no such thing as a 2012 iMac.. 2011 was the last refresh.
Nitpicking, I know. But, the 2011 iMacs were using hardware from 2009 and 2010.
Glad you figured it out. I was all set to post that I hadn’t noticed a change. And, further, the OS X patch addressed nothing that would affect GW2 performance.
Yup. That was my hope for the Naga as well, Ceribis. I am very uncoordinated, so using the keyboard to move is enough multitasking with one hand as it is.
I’ve been using the Magic Mouse, but I have a Razer Naga en route now. I use a the Razer Nostromo when I play clamshelled to my monitor at my desk as well. No room for it on the coffee room table in my living room though.
Great job.. Gems are once again available for purchase via the Mac Client.
Glad the team is working hard to bang out these fixes for the Mac client. Kudos!
I didn’t have any issues with Lion, but ML did add a bunch of features that I wanted like better iOS integration. But, I’m using the latest model MBP so it probably isn’t applicable here.
On my mid-2012 MBA running OS X 10.8.2 I’ve never had any audio issues. Sure, this statement will not help you solving your issues, but it may help to limit those to certain models or OS X versions.
Ditto here on a 2012 MBP running OS X 10.8.2. No audio issues.
You don’t mention what type of Mac you are trying to play on. MBP, iMac, Mac Mini.. Year, Screen Size, etc. These details can help us offer some suggestions.

The 15" will play GW2 just fine. I play on a 2012 13" MBP with no sacrifice to performance if I adjust some of the video settings a bit. So, your experience with a dedicated video card should be much better. Enjoy!
(Ditto the reply above. My experience in the native Mac client is no different, perhaps even better than Windows 7 via Bootcamp)
Call it dragging. That makes a lot more sense.
We called it Luring back in my day. Now I feel old.
In past games it was a reportable offense on certain servers. I never agreed with that rule. As it is a very strategic tactic in PvP. However, in PvE, non-contested areas, yah.. pretty inconsiderate.
Actually, I don’t think any of his issues line up with the known mac beta client issues. It sounds more like you got unlucky and were trying to use the TP when it was down/unresponsive.
I suspect the same. I’ve had a few instances where the trading page would not render and only the “loading ring” was present. Logging out/Logging in would usually correct it. And, if it didn’t, then as noted above, it would eventually work at a later time which I would assume is because the TP was down.
I just purchased my Mid-2012 13". Can anybody tell me what to expect while I have the client downloading?
I’m running the same model but I added 16gb RAM post purchase. I doubt that makes much of a difference in a gpu intensive game, but stating it anyways in case you do have a different experience than me.
My client runs very similar to my Windows 7 experience via Bootcamp in OS X 10.8.2. You will be running in very low video settings because there is no dedicated gpu in the 13" mbp as opposed to the nVidia in the 15" & 15" rMBP models.
So, if you are coming from a PC environment (native Windows on a PC machine) then you can expect a diminutive experience in comparison as most settings are knocked down to the minimum. You are welcome to bump them up at the expense of performance but expect those fans to start roaring like jet engines pretty fast and your frame rate do drop significantly.

I didn’t notice a difference. In fact, I was perplexed when I read your post so I just logged in to my PC to compare to my MBP and with the video options matched there was no noticeable difference to me.
Maybe you need to adjust your video options to match those you were using on your PC (Bootcamp)? If not, could it just be a difference in the video drivers. Not sure, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue in the client itself if it isn’t consistent on everybody’s setup.
This seems like a request to the developers.. this is the Players Helping Players forum. Perhaps you want to hit the feedback link for this input?
Nope. I’ve had to do this many times and it works for me. Submit a ticket with your system specs though to the devs.
Not I. Probably want to submit a ticket with your system specs so the devs can determine if its a problem related to your GPU or something.
I am running 10.8.2 and cannot reproduce any of the problems that you describe.
Same here. I too am running 10.8.2 and haven’t had as much as a hiccup in GW2. /shrugs
I’m sure you already have.. but just in case, don’t forget to submit your specs with a ticket at: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/Submitting-a-Support-Ticket-for-the-Mac-Beta-Client
With the exception of some weird things like glowing outlines around other players and the stuttering sound. My performance is equal or better than it was in bootcamped Win 7 Premium.
Mid 2012 13" MBP

16GB DDR3 RAM 1600Mhz

I’m getting flawless sound using Harman Kardon BT wireless headphones. However, the sound does stutter from my native MBP speakers. Mid 2012 13" MBP running 10.8.1.
Thank you, the client runs smoother than on bootcamp

Agreed! Much better performance in the Mac native client. Now, make zoom work with a Magic Mouse.
Uncheck Mac Beta: use scrolling gestures to change direction
Or do what I do and give up on the magic mouse for gaming
Not aware of the Uncheck Mac Beta option.. no reason not to use the magic mouse.
