Why does it feel like we’ve had this conversation before?
Is there any topic on the Ranger that hasn’t been done to death already?

Allie has pretty much stopped moderating it, big surprise there, and I think we’ve pretty much covered everything. Isn’t it about time we put this CDI to rest?

The CDI has turned into the Ranger subforum, just a pointless echo chamber where we all repeat the same ideas 100×.

Unless we get a dev reply before Tuesday, there’s no point to even keeping the thread open anymore.

OK, test it thoroughly. Very, very thoroughly.
Just… you know, it’s 15th March 2014 — more than 3 months passed…

It better be pristine, with 0 bugs demonstrating the rigorous amount of testing performed by their QA team.

Or it will be a worm infested apple of an update that was slapped together a week before it finally gets here because they simply forgot all about it and it’s at the bottom of the team’s To Do pile.

Not entirely sure which is more likely…

They can test till the cows come home, but it’ll still be buggy.

Only Anet could take 4 months to do something they have already done (not fundamentally different than Karma/Wallet consolidation) and still mess it up.

Profane Armor Set

I love the profane armor, but it doesn’t take dyes very well, which is why I eventually changed my outfit. Dye’s do not apply to this armor set like they do to cloth.
VERY frustrating.

It’s supposed to be leather I think. It’s based off of the GW1 armor that looked like tight leather and metal more than anything.

Do you miss this?

Substance E.4852

Do I miss dedicated trinity? Not necessarily. I enjoy it, but the GW2 soft trinity is fun too. Or it would be, if you actually needed it.
What I do miss is party coordination.
Mobs are either too easy they die if you just look at them, or so strong you sit there for minutes on end spamming attacks. They have a very weak AI so there’s not much thinking needed. Anet takes a lot of lazy shortcuts in enemy design, like making them dps sponges, defiant, OHKO attacks (or lately, making them immune to damage without any way to counter it). I think if Anet improved enemy AI, the soft trinity would come into play.

About the “waiting hours for a monk” comment (I assume in GW1), you didn’t have to wait hours for a monk or warrior. Instead of monk you could have invited a elementalist, ritualist, and necromancer healer/protector. Instead of warrior you could have used MM, spirit spammer, assassin, dervish, ele tank, and so on. That’s solely the players’ fault for being close minded.

~ Quoting Funset: “ARENANET ADVERTISEMENT HIS GAME FOR YEARS SAYING GW2 WOULD NOT HAVE A TRINITY?”
That’s not true. They said it wouldn’t have a dedicated trinity. They did say there would be a soft trinity. But they have deleted their blog to hide their lies… so you’ll have to take my word for it

What is this “soft trinity” you speak of?

Probably the CC/Support/DPS nonsense they threw at us during pre-launch hype.

CC is useless because anet has a Defiant addiction. Support as a role is a joke because even Guardians and boon spam Ele’s do insane damage for the support they bring, ousting many other classes that can’t support or dps as well. Which just leaves our old standby, stack n’ zerk DPS.

Are the dev's really all warriors?

in Profession Balance

Substance E.4852

The answer is, we don’t. My first 80 was an Elementalist. After that, I started a Thief which I got up to 74, a Necro which I got up to 22, and now I have a Warrior that is 80. Also have alts of every class.

Also, when I was in the Alpha before I started here, I mostly played Guardian and Ranger to lvl80. This was before they had implemented events in any of the lvl50+ maps. I had a friend that helped me grind up, and we would run around showing off that we hit 80 by grinding mobs.

I dunno why I shared that whole thing, but the point is that we definitely all play a variety of classes, just like you!

Does any dev main ranger?:) Because I doubt any does..:)

One of the guys (THE guy?) on the dungeon team was a ranger main but he left (ousted?) a while ago. He mostly thought we were just fine in pve and wvw so not much would have come of it if he stuck around anyway.

So a football jock should run slower than a book nerd?

Is the jock in heavy steel plate armor? Because, if he is, he isn’t going to be sprinting anywhere, not with the restricted range of movement and weight.

Pet Cooldown Penalty

in Ranger

Posted by: Substance E.4852

Substance E.4852

They removed the ability to res pet back in beta because apparently people complained that it blocked the players from ressing downed players when the downed pet moves close.

Honestly I prefer they keep the way it is now and do something about the cooldown penalty.

It was weeks after launch. And all I remember was that we were focusing on rezing our pet too much (gee, I wonder why anet) and that had to stop for reasons. They could have easily just prioritized player rezing over pet rezing when pressing F like they did with loot collection before interaction.

I’d settle for just being able to res my pet again. Their logic for removing it was ridiculous and the 60s felt like a penalty for swapping a dead pet rather than rezing it. Now it’s just a penalty for your pet falling victim to all the game mechanics that they can’t avoid.

It is painfully obvious no dev, period, mains a Ranger… That’s why we will remained handicapped with the band-aided pet.

They also dont play necro and i am not sure if they play ele (i feel they dont).

You can say the same for thief. The Dec. 10th update discussion for thieves is evidence of that.

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/arenanet-tracker/topic/278436-dec-10th-thief-changes/

They really believed that thieves were going heavy on the initiative gain and regen traits “because initiative regeneration was too slow and was causing players to either take traits to supplement it, or have their effectivness suffer”.

Now, that is partly true. The real reason why thieves never take anything else is because around 80% of thief traits are either situational or plain crappy. And I listed them, giving each of those traits a reason why they sucked. I even gave my general consensus about the thief traitlines and their problems. That comment even got some support. But nobody listened….

I could’ve also listed why certain weapon sets were prefered over others, but I had to confront the troll who wasted an entire page of comments saying the same thing he was saying for the few months prior. If you read through a few pages on that topic you’ll know who I am talking about.

The whole discussion was shot.

Good god, if the dev’s seriously think initiative regen is too slow then we are in even bigger trouble than I thought.

Concerns about WvW future

in WvW

Substance E.4852

Why i not play wvw in gw2 anymore.

The Balancing is only towards tPvP.
GW2 has skill lag even in a 50vs50vs50 fight
the AOE culture in the WvW rewards only blobbing
Roaming is no fun, in ESO i can roam a large map without meet the Zerg but many 1vs1 and 1vs2 or 2vs2.
No Downstate.
The promises they break about there will be no new gear, i only waited for a game i can switch to after i was so disappointed how they implemented the new gear. I never want to craft something!

Maybe i come back maybe not, GW2 is still a good game, but not for me at the moment.

This.
About the lag, I remember EVE. People were screaming about lag when 300 people were in a system. CCP gave us better servers. People were complaining about lag when 1000 people were in a system. And so on. Biggest battle i participated were about 1800 people in a system. Guess what people said
Maybe its us the players who have to change.

Greezzz

That wasn’t lag, that was the fabric of space-time telling you guys to go easy on the Avatar blobs because it’s starting to pull something holding all that.

Substance E.4852

I’m sick of people complaining about their pet.

If you don’t want a pet-class, you don’t want Ranger. It’s as simple as that.

No, it’s not as simple as that.

When people rolled a Ranger they realized it came with a pet. It wasn’t a surprise. What they discovered was pets don’t work correctly…and Anet has said they are not sure if they can fix it.

If the pets worked as intended, you would get very few, if any, complaints about them.

I want to play an archer like I do in every game. There is no other class that can wield both bows. The pet is just a horrible nuisance I have had to deal with. How pets got tied to “rangers” I have no idea -must be one of those copying WoW things.

Drizzt Do’urden from The dark elf trilogy is a Ranger that has a pet Jaguar as a companion. The are many iconic Rangers who develop relationships with animals.

Even the Ranger in after earth develop a brief but close boon with a gian bird of prey. So close that the animal gave its life to save the ranger.

Rangers and pet have a long history some closer than other but there has always been a connetion.

Drizzit had a pet because DnD rangers have animal companions.
Until Pathfinder’s writers overhauled the Ranger’s access to magic, the Ranger in the d20 system was just about as “meh” as we are here.

At this point I am thinking that it is past time for the CDI to at least move to a different phase as now vocal members of other profession communities are starting to plot generic *Well ranger needs help, but so does X". I just got caught up and saw a couple of those and it is a sign of more to come, might need to have people start flagging them simple as they do not add anything constructive.

The second I saw a necro start to complain like their class needs help I almost caved my skull in from how hard I facepalmed. Maybe they need condition help in pve but that’s hardly unique to them.

http://www.twitch.tv/gw2ascii/c/3575974

Necro “weakness” at work.

By that reasoning Ranger is just fine since they have the Spirit builds in sPvP. Just because you’re playing the dead last class doesn’t mean there isn’t somebody stuck in 7th.

Engineer, Necromancer, and Elementalist all need serious reviews and might actually benefit from theirs since its not a question of the entire class being built on crap AI. heck, even the Thief could use some improved relevance in group play – trading away some of their current strengths for team-wide benefits.

True but if you’re #5-6, you don’t go into #8’s thread to complain about how bad you have it.

@Substance E well you are wrong sir with what is easier
Glory – was in game from start, that means it has been built into core of game
WXP – added after 6 months, so its more like addon that part of core game.

And you mean like Glory for sPvP is more importants that WXP for WvW. So progrress system for one game mod is more important than progress system for second mod? That removing one progress system is easier that adjusting second progress system?

I hope no dev will confirm this, that would make people ragequit

It makes me sad that you missed the obvious sarcasm of my post.

Glory isn’t part of the “core” of the game. It’s just a reward system. No more complicated than WvWxp or karma. The point of the joke is that they don’t care about WvW but will not only focus all balance around spvp, they will apparently take a similar change to reward points and make it a reality in as little time as they can.

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for word of when we can even expect wvwxp consolidation to happen since it’s obviously not gonna be before season 2 unless they want the season to open with a deluge of crippling bugs.

It’s Spvp>PvE>WvW and always will be.

Substance E.4852

Perma stow wouldn’t make pets OP. In rebalancing for permastow, it would make those that still want to play with the pet op. THAT IS, unless we design something that gives the player a boost to balance it out.

The aspects I think were a little different. They talked about having specific bonuses based on the pet that the player was using. That is different from just giving a damage boost, which could end up being difficult to balance.

I think the reverse of this was used as the reasoning behind nerfing pets to begin with, wasn’kitten That is, the ranger and the pet did ‘too much damage’ so the pet was nerfed to compensate.

My fear with permastow is it will break things further in the balancing process. No matter what, playing without a pet would win out. Even if on paper a ranger + pet would theoretically do more damage, the pet AI is so bad at hitting things that it would not matter.

Basically, beastmasters will be seen as a huge liability. Instead of just hating rangers in general, people will start to hate based on what kind of ranger you are, which is IMO worse. Why would anyone want a person with a lackluster AI that cannot stay alive and draws huge amounts of aggro around when they could just ‘upgrade’ to the non-pet option?

Probably the same reason we all already play with “a lackluster AI that cannot stay alive and draws huge amounts of aggro around” instead of just rolling a new class. Using the pet would become like using bearbow in dungeons. It’s your choice to play something that is ineffective in the current situation so don’t complain when people call you out on it.

Perma stow gives us the tools to at least end the general hate on the ranger and let us play a way that is viable in situations where the pet clearly isn’t. (WvW, world bosses ect.)

Thing is, there was this in the past when GW1 had the option of rangers not using pets . . but they still caught flak. Especially if you saw a ranger who hadn’t loaded D-shot.

In any game there’s been a ranger class? They’ve been hated on. In any game there’s been pet classes? They’ve been hated on.

. . . I got used to it a long time ago.

Again though, same issue as we have now. Why would you not slot d-shot? It was borderline OP and almost always hit when used with a recurve bow.

We also had the same problem we have now, people would just sit at max range with their flat bows and spam barrage, doing nothing else. They wouldn’t even slot splinter weapon with it. It wasn’t hard to build for solid damage on a ranger, people just didn’t want to put in the effort of hitting more than one button. We were pretty useless in FoW/DoA groups but we never had the “no rangers allowed” bullkitten that we have here.

I feel ranged/archer classes get flack because they are hard to balance properly from a pvp perspective so they tend to be either too weak or too strong and rarely fall into that happy medium. The other half of it is that they attract the laziest of the lazy, people who want to play mmo’s on cruise control and then complain when others call them out on it.

If anything. warriors were much more hated than we were. It was a special thing to get one or two who didn’t think they were invincible and aggroed every kitten thing in sight, overwhelming the monks and then kittening in party chat about how they needed a rez.

And if... GW2 didn't had leveling?

Substance E.4852

I’ve never understood the need or desire to have levels, but apparently I’m one of the few that doesn’t get a chubby seeing the number next to my character’s name go up by one.

Levels are great for restricting players and make having alts a chore.

Shouldn’t player progression (experience gained from playing) be more important?

True, but if the game has a story, there has to be a way of restricting where you can go and when. It makes no sense to encounter Pact forces before you help forge the pact.

The other big problem is a greenhorn fresh out of boot camp wouldn’t logically be able to go toe to toe with Zaihtan’s elite troops. That can be emulated by making later foes stronger or smarter so you have to play more tactically with skills you acquire naturally through gameplay but most companies just go the “just put in arbitrary level restrictions” route and have areas with deer that are stronger than hardened bandits.

It doubly sad to see Anet not only do this after they worked around it in Factions and Nightfall, but to then say ta’ Hell with levels meaning anything and just up leveling everyone for these LS chapters.

Do they want character level to mean something or not? I can’t even tell anymore…

Simple human psychology. People feel that zones in which they are level 80 are endgame zones.
If you are downscaled you feel weaker. It might not be true or even the opposite, but that’s just how the brain works.

They’re endgame zones because that was where the endgame loot was. You couldn’t make Exo gear with lvl30 zone mats and until Ascended came out we had little use for low level mats besides craft leveling. Why farm a place that gives t1 dust and fragments when it’s T6 dust and lodestones you need?

I’m also pretty sure no one ever feels weaker in a downscaled zone regardless of what the number in the lower left hand corner reads. Just like most of us wouldn’t feel any stronger even if the lvl counter just kept increasing every time we “lvl’d up” if we never got statistically stronger. It’d be as meaningless as a “kill counter” or the /age command.

I don’t waste a slot for bloodlust or precision buff. Take 1 minute and you can get a full stack with 2 spare weapons.

Aren’t they changing it so you’ll lose the stacks if you switch to a weapon without the sigil?

25 bloodlust stacks is 250 power. Which for most builds will be about +10% damage. Even when buffed with food and 25 might stacks, it’ll be about +7% damage. So superior to sigil of force (5% damage).

There was a rumor floating around but I can’t really see them doing it.

I’ll probably just mush in another accuracy sigil or a sigil of force. It’s not worth trying to get a full stack of buttlust in WvW on a ranger with a longbow anyway.

You don’t use LB to get stacks. You equip whatever 2 alternate weapons to compliment your build. Power build I use Sword/Axe, trait entangle and 12 kills later I have 24 stacks. Condi build A/T + traps + entangle and your 12 kills comes even faster.

I can actually get halfway to full or more from just a single barrage if a fight goes well and I don’t die from Retaliate overload. I mostly meant as in you don’t have the survivability with LB that you get on other weapons to stay alive constantly in big fights. Force sigils may be a smaller boost but it’s always there and doesn’t require me to keep refilling it ever time I get downed.

The LB makes a good sniper weapon but I tend to use it with piercing arrows to pressure people trying to retreat to the safety of the back of their zerg so i get caught in the hammer train quite often. It’s high risk but can pay off pretty well. Especially when you get lucky with Tab and find an enemy commander.

And I highly doubt that Anet would give all the love to non pet rangers when so many of our traits affect the pet and they still adamantly believe we are “the pet class”. Worst case scenario, we’d see the same lack of support we have been getting for the last 1.5 years anyway. We can’t get much more ignored.

I think what he meant was that if you gave the ranger an appropriate stat boost only while the pet was stowed, then there would be no need to rebalance in the first place.

No, I think she got it. What she was saying was a straight stat boost would be hard to balance between pet vs non-pet vs other classes. On the other hand unique effects for stowing the pets (ie aspects) is more lateral power and thus easier to make competitive, each having its own niche.

And yeah, this ^

So I started thinking, why not keep everything the same with pets, except improve the AI of course(which is on the list anyways), keep attack mode, but change passive mode to guard mode. Add a few more skills to pets, skills for attack mode and skills for guard mode, when the pet is in guard mode it stays by your side, the F2 ability changes to a guard mode type utility, AND the pet absorbs 30% of the damage you take. that seems fair since it is 30% of your damage.

Because they made it abundantly clear that pet AI is the same algorithms as the hostile mob AI. Improvements means recoding the entire game to be smarter or writing an an entire new AI code just for pets. Not only is this infeasible, a smarter pet isn’t going to magically make us better and would only intensify the AI petting-zoo hate in the game already.

Also, I don’t want this thread to be entirely about pets. We’ve seen a ton of great feedback about them, and I would like to hear more about utilities that need help (and aren’t viable unless spec’d into) as I haven’t seen as much on that front!

Thanks all

Signet of the Hunt: This is a terrible signet without the trait. Even with the trait, given this class’s lack of skills to really benefit from the added damage on, it’s almost never activated. In fact, I’d wager most people activate it when they spawn because it puts the buff on you for a very long period of time, and then never use it again unless they’re lining up a maul. So not only does this signet need a trait before it’s useful… it also needs a specific weapon. Thus why I suggested changing signet of the hunt HERE.

While SotH is weaker than any of the 25% faster-run-speed-on-passive signets on other classes, compounded by the mandatory GM trait, I wouldn’t say the active is never used. The passive only gives faster run, so I (I have SotH, SoS and SotW as my default utilities along with the RaO elite) find I use it for any fight with an Elite or up as soon as it comes off cool down. You may argue that this behaviour is because rangers are so poor in burst or power, but I use it exactly for that reason. Every little bit of extra damage I can squeeze out helps. If the trait were to become standard ranger signet behaviour I would possibly look to Signet of the Locust behaviour for how to balance it—give a one-shot damage boost to the ranger, its pet and 5 nearby allies (perhaps at +25% damage for allies).

But we aren’t a burst class. We need a more sustained damage boost. More like the thieves Assassin’s Signet that is already a bigger damage boost than our own given that we deal damage over several attacks, not just one big one.

Any weapon besides the GS will receive a bigger boost from 5 bonuses of 15 than one boost of 50 and would work better with trying to burst targets down with the 1h sword and QZ.

f.ex watchknight works too, or charr toy soldiers etc. however they stop each emote after a few sec :o

Toy Soldier does emotes just the same as any Charr. I’ve never seen it end on it’s own.

Ok the class mechanic of a class is not just whats on the f4 buttons, its the things/mechanics the class has that others dont.

theif = steal/iniative/stealth skills
these things are considered in every facet of theif. you cannot play a thief at all without considering iniative, and no other class has iniative.

If Stealth is part of the the thief class mechanic, how come three other classes have access to it? It’s as much the class mechanic as traps are the rangers.

Stealth doesnt have a counter -> Thieves can spam stealth -> profit.

Stealth is countered by AoE, engineers can utilise stealth. Engineers can also spam ‘block’ does that make block their class mechanic? Guardians have numerous sources of Swift, is Swift their class mechanic? Rangers can spam evades, are evades the ranger class mechanic?

Stealth is part of the Thief class mechanic because they have unique skills that deal powerful effects when used in stealth. Mesmers, Engis, and Rangers can use stealth but none of us get a special burst skill when we attack from it.

They are also the only class with light health and med armor with virtually no stability.
A thief that doesn’t spam stealth is either a very good S/P thief or a dead every other build thief.

We already have serpent’s strike and stalkers strike that both function better as dodges. We need a gap closer on the sword.

The best option would be to reverse the order and then remove the time limit on the second skill. You can close the gap at the start and hit some nice damage and then you have a retreat skill in reserve if you need it since we don’t need to spam gap closers with the cripple on the auto.

It gives us the best of both without any sacrifice.

Well, you need some kind of limit on the second skill, otherwise you’d have to use it before being able to leap again. But I’d agree that increasing the timeout to 5-7 sec would work.

I was thinking along the lines of 20-30 seconds. Long enough to be there for a fight if and when you need it. Maybe a system that reverts it back if you leave combat so you don’t have to keep flipping around when you use it on pve overworld mobs?
