I saw the traits in the wiki just now.

And so died the hope that shapeshifting might be one of the unrevealed ones.

That’s two for two in disappointing elite specs for ranger.

Considering how many different pets we already have and will get in the future, shapeshifting would have been too huge an undertaking to achieve visually. And why are some people so hung up on the whole shapeshifting thing anyway? I’m honestly curious here.

They want the game to sacrifice it’s identity so that they can play a ripoff WoW shrugs

Let’s not seriously pretend that our Druid wasn’t heavily inspired by WoW’s druid with it’s focus on healing and zapping moonbeams and lunar energy all over the place.

We even turn into a spirit wisp with our staff.

Are you sure it wasn’t DnD? Or literally any other Role-playing game even before the era of digital gaming that had Druids?

I’ve played DnD before, zapping moonbeams around wasn’t really what they did. Frankly, they didn’t do much of anything useful for a longtime compared to other casters.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spellLists/druidSpells.htm

Druids in reality have a huge focus on lunar cycles and astral bodies, so I assumed that’s where they kinda got the moon laser things from.

And as someone who plays DnD Druids quite excessively I can safely say they focus way more on transforming into things, summoning stuff, and then spells to utilize plants or the elements.

Kinda upset our Druid doesn’t do any of the non astral stuff with staff/human form glyphs.

I mean it’s definitely possible but WoW is the 30 million active player elephant in the room and lunar themes play heavily into their druid via the connection to Night Elf lore the class has.

It’s likely not the only influence but it’s hard to say that there was no influence either. I’d even go so far as to say the WoW Death knight probably helped shape what Reaper became (at least while wielding a GS).

Oh I’m positive there was at least a little influence for both of those from wow, however, WoW Druid uses moon stuff significantly less than our Druid, they’ve got like, 4-5 spells tops that deal with the moon and sun and all of them are offensive.

All their heals are more plant based/growth based.

It’s funny that the two are inverted from what they should be.

Moonskin druids should be the ones healing with Sailormoon powers and GW2 druids should be the one’s healing with green plant energy.

I doubt we can swap pets in beast mode.

There’s no visual indicator to let an opponent know what’s on deck and the 10s cooldown wouldn’t be needed as much if we didn’t have to drop out to swap pets.

PvE power builds for Ranger probably won’t ever be a thing, but a Griever build might surface in PvE with Marksmanship-Skirmishing-Soulbeast.

The changes Tuesday make it much better though probably still not as good as condi.

I guess my point was that the current form of SB is really not even worth slotting on a power build. The traits don’t look like they would offset the damage boost from any of the three power lines and beastmode doesn’t offer enough dps over just leaving a cat out the whole fight.

I don’t even really get what they thought they were doing. This was their chance to make both types fairly even and all they did was give a massive boost to the spec that was already better.

100% hope I’m wrong, but I really don’t see this being good at anything in wvw. Not enough condi clear to make it roaming and not enough group support with traited stances to take a spot from a guard in groups.

Looks fun to play though…

A: Did you miss the balance pass on Tuesday? The one that lets a traited troll’s remove 4 conditions every cast?

B: I’ve almost never seen a squad that had “enough guards”. It just doesn’t happen. If I can still manage a pity place as a Druid, being able to bring team stab and resistance, even at a small duration, is going to make us much better. To say nothing of the pet no longer dying on “Inc!”.

I’m already seeing commanders in teamspeak say Soulbeast looks promising and these are the same people who explicitly request ranger players bring a different class if able.

As for roaming I really don’t know how you can look at the tank bears bring or the movement Swoop gives us and say this won’t be good for roaming.

The only place Soulbeast falls flat is PvE power builds. It’s very solid for every other game mode and will likely have more flexibility than Druid.

Soulbeast Dagger vs Sword Damage?

in Ranger

Substance E.4852

It’s reasonable to assume the one video shows her using the dagger on either a zerk amulet or some other power build based on the damage of worldly impact.

If that is the case, then I doubt the dagger will outpace sword in a power build even with near perma quickness from the trait and dagger 3.

I guess we’ll find out in a week here though.

It’s adorable that people think the WvW server hamsters could handle 3 zergs of mounted players on a map.

The game can’t even handle mini pets past a certain player population. It even used to be a tactic to have them out to trigger culling and make your zerg invisible to the enemy back when that was a thing.

Okay, ya, some of these aren’t making to release.

Live Fast giving 3s of quickness with every beast skill when some have less than 10s cooldown? Swoop is a 1200 leap on a 10s cooldown. Nevermind the quickness on dagger 3.

Unstoppable union breaking stun and giving 4s of unblockable attacks every 10 seconds?

Getting “no cooldown ancient seeds” flashbacks here.

These sound way too good to last long at all in pvp.

Have you seen what other specs are getting?

I’ve long stopped expecting parity from the Anet balance team. They’ve repeatedly hit the class with massive nerfs any time we even approached a functional state in pvp.

The only reason Druid lasted as long as it has is because it’s core healing mechanic was integral to the success of Raids and they only just recently finally went whole hog with game mode splits.

Why have the price at all? I’m not opposed to removing it, but if Anet does want to keep the cash price as a part of it, this would at least give them an opportunity to balance it better. Part of the reason it costs so much now, under this principle, is that Anet is setting the price knowing it can drop anything from blue to orange

I agree no one will ID green ones, but that’s half the point: it cuts down on Inventory Wars 2. And I think it would be completely reasonable for rare/exo unids to not give ectos (so you ID it if you want the good salvage stuff).

I have a feeling it costs what it does because the items have a potentially high rate of rare/exo items. You have someone here saying they ID’d 33 items and got 4 rares and 2 exos.

At ~1.5s per that’s 49.5s which is more than covered by what was identified.

Maybe this is an outlier. Maybe not.

Like I said earlier, either the drop rate is so high that you have to ID them all to avoid missing out on rares such that you will almost always recoup the cost with profit.

Or, the rate is too low to justify the cost and you should just salvage them into mats which all have a nice value to them (not you silk) or sell them to some TP baron who can afford to open enough of them en mass to make a profit like with loot bags.

If there’s one thing i can trust their economy team to do right, it’s to calculate the average market value of the items and charge an appropriate amount per ID. It’s something anyone with access to the loot table and a basic understanding of middle school algebra can figure out.

A lot of MMO’s have a good distribution of waypoints and people still enjoy riding mounts in them.

The thing about most MMO’s is that teleporting is usually a costly process that makes you pay (often steeply) for the convenience.

It’s often a mechanism that is also limited to porting to central town hubs, not to locations all over a map. You port to a town and then ride out to where you need to get to for an event/quest/ect.

Porting in Gw2 is trivial in cost unless you do it dozens of times in an hour and waypoints are so abundant that walking anywhere in vanilla Gw2 usually isn’t something you do for more than a few minutes at a time unless you’re doing a node circuit.

People will still use mounts just because it is a speed boost but they are likely still going to port everywhere and only mount up for the parts they absolutely have to go on foot.

The second problem could be fixed with three tiers of unids: Masterwork (gives blues ‘n’ greens), Rare (gives rares) and Exotic (gives exos). With that you can make a more dynamic ID price and solve the first issue.

Then why even have it at all?

If you know what the box contains, any cost is just a flat tax to access the item and defeats the whole purpose of ID’ing it.

No one is ever going to ID salvage fodder and you will only ID rares/exos if you need the skins, otherwise they too will just get salvaged.

Oh I didn’t mean it as a bad thing. This is literally the first time I have ever heard WvW guilds talk about the Ranger being useful. Soulbeast is going to be a huge buff for us in WvW.

We won’t be nearly as good as a guard or revenant, but you can NEVER have too much party stab and resistance.

The best part is we’ll still hit pretty hard in beastmode even with soldiers gear so it’s not like we have to give up damage to be useful like we do with druid.

Going ham with greatsword while having solid sustain and support and having the zerg actually happy you brought a ranger is going to feel good.

I don’t think there has EVER been an option to choose your lineage as a human. I wish there was but there isn’t. Unless I missed an in game option.

No matter what you choose though, the story just assumes you are a citizen of DR which has krytans, ascalonians, elonians, and canthans in it. No matter your ethnicity, the narrative assumes you have a singular culture you were raised in based on your affluence choice.

A poor krytan/ascalonian lived the same life as a poor canthan/elonian.

Oh axe might be good if the BM swoop skill from birds is an actual movement skill that either moves us like greatsword swoop or blinks us.

If we don’t get that then probably not. The channel on the skill is just too long for the damage if the person can see you coming.

People will also quickly learn to expect this and it will stop being effective against good players the same way using judges and trap bombing people did.

While it probably will not see sPvP use, it’s perfectly viable and works well in WvW and in PvE it will be great with SoulB.

I can only assume you mean roaming wvw because using whirling in a zerg fight is suicide.

Even path is a risky option since it can actually cause major harm to your allies if it’s reflected.

It might be better if we can swoop into the back and use it but I’m not gonna try theory crafting when there’s going to be big shakeups coming. Warrior alone is going to reshape a lot of play with it’s massive boon hate.

Right now, swoop to me is a cheap movement skill for re-positioning, not a skill for diving in offensively. Our main role in a zerg will be to tank up and cooldown spam bear stance, dolyak stance, and Spiritual reprieve.

Owl and brown/black bear are going to be standard.

Also, it doesn’t seem as though the tooltips accurately reflect stat investment (could be wrong, I didn’t play the demo characters long enough to notice).

The damage does change in the listed skills if you adjust your gear so it’s safe to say that what we see is what we’ll get.

Pretty much the only hard hitting skill I’ve seen so far is the pig maul. Every other hard hitting pet skill is nerfed to kitten. tail swipe hits for 780 at 2150 power and smoke scale’s assault hits for less than half of the pet version and less than a greatsword maul.

Cats are a dps loss their pet skills hit for so little. The cat maul is a kittening joke.

They are really all over the place with BM pet skills. Some are amazing and other’s are laughably bad.

GS Damage VS Sword

in Ranger

Sword is still better dps. The weapon itself not so much but you still get a ton of damage from axe 4 and 5.

Running zepher’s speed with GS probably helps balance things out a bit but then you’d want to run double cat’s and don’t get to take advantage of perma fury from tiger or the cc from the wyvern.

It’s a solid pvp weapon but still outclassed by sword which will be outclassed by dagger/torch.

WvW Power LB Ranger rune choice for roaming?

in Ranger

Substance E.4852

There’s virtually nothing you can do about the pet when it comes to zerg fights. Unless you hang back at maximum range your pet’s going to get blown up by aoe’s. It’s just an inevitability.

I wouldn’t even recommend hanging back that far anyway as it makes you very obvious thief bait and they will try to gank you if you stray too far from the group. EBG is filled with them.

You’re best bet is to have a dummy pet out normally you don’t mind losing and your proper pet in stow to switch to when needed. Smokescale is usually the optimal choice for this for obvious reasons. Bear is another good choice for quick condition cleanse.

There’s not much else that can be done about it until Soulbeast comes out.

As noted in another thread, raptors strafing would not break realism. Birds can move sideways so why do we conclude that their ancestors could not? I’m for the 180 turnaround working, too.

But if it stays the same, I’ll get used to it I’m sure. Not a huge thing.

A large theropod is not at all the same thing as a bird like a cassowary.

A bear can’t move the same way a dog does just because they both have 4 legs and a common ancestor.

Soul beast merge skills and Effects from test

in Ranger

Substance E.4852

We don’t know how traits and utilities change during Beastmode.
You are not supposed to stay permanent in Beastmode for optimal play. That was wishful thinking from players who want a complete petless ranger.

This is also not at all true for many pets. The wolf is classified as a condi pet for some reason and any BM specced for condition is going to be in BM mode as much as possible to take advantage of the condition boost and Primal Cry.

Same with bristleback, it’s better to camp in BM and only pop out to use spike barrage.

Then there’s the black bear which is MUCH better as a BM pet than a regular one. No reason to ever leave BM when you have 2 immune to damage skills + extra toughness and health if the alternative is a bear. Black bear BM will be the go to for WvW zerging if they fix Leader of the Pack to give full stance duration to allies.

You were never supposed to be “perma beast mode” just for the fact that you can’t pet swap in it, but there’s clearly many instances where spending the majority of time in BM is ideal.

The problem is that the way things are currently set up, playing power builds in pve isn’t one of those times and frankly, it’s not worth it to ever use BM on a zerk build.

contrary to popular belief, merging with your pet isn’t meant to be a flat out upgrade, there’s supposed to be give and take.

What give is there when it’s basically a dps loss on power builds and a direct increase on condi builds?

200 extra power isn’t mindblowing and all the fused forms of pet skills do incredibly low damage. Why would I ever combine with a tiger in pve for example? I would lose damage as well as the fury uptime.

The downside is that you’d have to buy the expansion. Which is stupid.

Anyone who wanted to stay competitive in pvp/wvw would have bought it anyway. What happened with HoT is going to happen again. This balance pass was them setting up the pins.

Hell, SB looks like it’s going to be very solid performance-wise and a lot of fun to play besides that. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t buy the expansion. It’s even 20 bucks less than HoT was and looks like it will have a lot more content.

Yet another Ranger nerf - SOW

in Ranger

LB rangers got a huge buff in the form of 6 sec unblockable.

The 6 sec of unblockable is pretty useless if you get tossed around all the time in WvWvW because you have no stability.
Just wanted to say that I never really used SOW as there are other utility skills that are just better for my weird play style(tanky core ranger which also got even harder nerfed once again).

I play on BG and it’s not that difficult to avoid the pain train if you are using a LB. It’s also not even that big of a deal if you manage to get in a group with a guard.

Getting run over isn’t the problem we have, it’s dealing with 20 guards all using wall of reflection to render our best zerg weapon useless along with too many classes having cheap block channels that allow them to retreat into the zerg when you try to burn them down.

But the SoR argument is like saying it’s inefficient to get paid $100 a month for a year when you could make $200 which is a bigger chunk, but at 2-3 (or more) time slower. In a worst case efficiency, you’re breaking even, and beyond that, the monthly payment is more money. The only argument that can be made for the other options is that people prefer the delivery method.

What it’s really like is it’s the week rent’s due. You owe $600 and can choose between a job that will net you that $600 at the end of the week or take a job that will net you $2000 in two weeks instead.

Option B clearly pays more per time but only option A will actually keep you from getting evicted.

It’s the same here. 6 condi’s a minute sounds good on paper but if I have 3k tics on me, I need a cleanse now, not 10 seconds from now.

Please. The crying is too much.

But currently Soulbeast does not exist. And they really did strip a lot of stab from Rangers in general.

It’s coming in less than 2 months and no one was going to run both dolyaks and SoW. If the soulbeast elite wasn’t so terrible I’d almost say you wouldn’t even need to slot SotP.

in Ranger

The main reason Druid is general not seen as particularly good in zergs is because the ele’s in the group provide most of the healing you could ever need. Even the Guardians can put out some solid AoE healing if they all remember to detonate thier staff orbs right as they cast them.

Druid’s not terrible, but when the zerg’s already got 7 front line ele’s, you’re contribution is that much less and are often better off bringing something else, if if it just means ditching staff for a longbow.

We’re likely to see more impact after PoF comes out with SB and Druid may see more of a desired role if people start rolling Weaver instead of Tempest.

Sb has dolyak stance so I think we’ll be okay. It’s already going to be a better stab skill than Wild sig was.

Yet another Ranger nerf - SOW

SotP wasn’t nerfed by the cooldown so much as the revert back to a single boon application that can just be corrupted.

To be honest, the new wild sig is probably better for wvw. An AoE field is better than entangle’s vines and the extra crit damage will make up for losing steady focus to slot brutish seals.

We can also now purge 4 conditions with trolls using the fall and WK traits. We lost some stab but came out stronger.

Don’t forget that we are also getting Dolyak Stance with soulbeast so it’s not that big of a loss.

Losing those HP ticks for druid generation was probably the worst that came of the change.

what do you think of the balance patch?

If that works for Soften the Fall too… That means i can cleanse 4 Conditions by Pooing my Pants and slow Enemies? \o/ what a time to be alive

Internal cooldown of 20s. You can’t trigger the fall damage one and then use the healing one before the cooldown is up.

Soulbeast GrandMaster trait: Eternal bond

Also, the 90s is from the PvP area, it’s highly possible it has a different CD or Effect or Coefficients in PvE

While possible it’s probably not true since getting back up from being downed in PvE is where the Ranger completely outshines every other class in the game by a mile.

It’s easily the one place we need 0 assistance in.

Wasted opportunity to bring back dervish.

Iirc both dervish and paragon are very human centric classes idk how well would that work with the 5 races of today.

There wasn’t anything human specific about the paragon. It was simply implied to be a Sunspear based class which could easily apply to most of the new expansion specs since Elona has no other sapient humanoids in it. Most of them have flavor text that implies you learn how to be _ only after visiting Elona.

A Charr warrior could onyl ever learn to be a Spellbreaker after talking to Elonian humans for example.

-“The broken weapons of the Sunspears have become daggers in the hands of their descendants, which they use to strike at the very fabric of magic and strip it from their foes. They meditate to see past their enemies’ defenses, and they use their adrenaline to counter attacks.”

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Spellbreaker

Dervish could easily be brought back as some kind of secular enchantment sharing class. It wouldn’t clash with any lore but would sadly be rather redundant with what we have now. Boon sharing isn’t a limited class feature and Tempest was basically what you would expect a dervish to look like in GW2.

Why not Steam?

Probably not worth the extra work to have to deal with the Steam platform or Anet just doesn’t have the manpower necessary.

I doubt they don’t need the extra exposure or access to their game as they aren’t a behemoth like blizzard nor is it likely that the deduction for Steam’s services is a major problem. Even Square sells FF14 through Steam and every game that sells physical copies sells them to the outlet at a fraction of what you actually pay for it.

If Anet sold disk copies through amazon for example, Anet would probably see 20 out of the $30 you spent at most.

New pets?

I mean it sounds easy to just shrink down an npc and give it to us but you have to then ignore how many nerfs both saurians received after HoT came out. They both also completely overshadowed our other pets for a long time.

They are also likley adding cat’s because that’s the best pet family for pve. Some are better than others but for just running around in the overworld, a snow leopard is more or less just as good as a lynx.

Adding a new spider or some hound that can’t beat out wolf/drakehound just means no one would use it.

Who uses the cave spider or white wolf? Not many unless they are Rp’ing. Same goes for the frost drake. I rarely even see people using the reefdrake anymore and people loved that thing despite it’s terrible F2.

New pets?

I guess? I mean, we’re lucky we are even getting anything new.

Don’t forget that this is extra coding they do just for us. We still get the same amount of new skills and traits that other classes get, plus new pets to play with. The HoT pets, with the exception of the tiger, were unique pet types they had to conceive and balance.

I mean, I get where you are coming from and it would be great to have the ludicrous amount of variety you can have as a WoW Hunter http://www.wow-petopia.com/ but the more family types they add, the more they have to balance.

WoW can get away with it because all pets work the same and can be specced to tank, dps, or pvp control. That’s it. A dps wolf functions exactly the same as a dps devilsaur (t-rex).

As much as I’d love one of those hydras like I had in WoW, the iboga’s enough for me and that thing next to the lion might even be some kind of gryphon. It’s impossible to say, only that it’s classified as a “cat” and will have those base abilities.

We’re did this information come from. As far as I’m aware, only the pull and the ground stomp skills were shown to us?

Was there some additional release of info?

So we get stupid ass pets again, two plants and a rock deer.

They feel like they should of been in HoT’s with the other disappointing additions to our bestiaries. Christ and here I Was hoping for some beastly monsters to tame

The Iboga is a plant snake with a blender for a face and you clearly missed the lion creature as well as the other cat we’ll be getting.

I’d say we’re pretty set on beastly creatures.

Things I'd rather have than mounts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Substance E.4852

Things I’d rather have than Mounts:

1. Charr Cars or one of those big lion faced tanks from the character prologue cutscene. It has to be as big though. This is an important detail.

2. Mounts with armor so I can ride a swirling ball of auras.

3. 10 mounts, 4 isn’t enough.

4. Mounts that can glide. Specifically the glider must deploy from my back while the mount continues it’s run sequence. Again, this is an important detail.

5. A mount for my mount. Only another animal of equal or larger size, not one of the tanks or a charr car. That would be weird.

New Ranger Specialization: Soulbeast.

in Ranger

Substance E.4852

Even with Soulbeast looking like it’ll require constant dancing between the pet and no pet to be optimal, I think a lot of people who liked the Lone Ranger thematic GW1 allowed will really like Soulbeast since you can probably spend a majority of your time without your pet, and just use the mindset of the pet is a tool you’re utilizing every now and then.

Constantly vibrating between modes will probably depend heavily on whether pets have their own cooldown for their skills and our BM skills.

Can we fuse with a hound, use both leaps, pop out of BM and have the hound use it’s leaps?

If not, we’ll probably be in BM more often than not just because of how much more practical the pet skills will be (wing buffet in the teaser video or the brutal charge in the stream for example).

It probably also depends on how many “trigger when entering/leaving BM” traits we get. No resource and infinite BM duration makes me think we won’t be getting anything nearly as powerful as we got with the Druid.

Boring dagger

in Ranger

Substance E.4852

I like having leaps, although if I wanted to add a Dagger skill that was slightly different, what about a "rope dagger? Have you throw the dagger with a “beam” coming off it, and if it hits an enemy then it yanks them back into melee range.

While this would be cool and unique mechanically, a leap would work 100% of the time while a pull wouldn’t work against anyone with stability up or against any of those mobs with the unbreakable break bar defiant mechanic like worms etc.
